Getting Flynn at right price as important as getting him

The question today is apparently not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Matt Flynn. It seems if the team gets a chance to sign the Green Bay free agent backup quarterback, that is exactly what will happen.

No, the question I believe more important is not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Flynn but how they'll try to sign Flynn. It's a completely different issue and definitely as important an issue.

Flynn, according to a reliable source, will be in town sometime late tonight. He'll be here, assuming he doesn't get blown away by the Seattle Seahawks and simply jumps at the opportunity. But once he arrives, then what?

What to do with Flynn?

Do the Dolphins commit to Flynn as their starter or do they commit to him as, ahem, a quarterback who will come to camp and compete with Matt Moore for the starting job. In other words, do the Dolphins commit starting quarterback money or do they commit the kind of money a player who has a chance to start but isn't certain of that typically gets?

If the Dolphins are committing to Flynn as their starter, they may have to spend between $7-$9 million per season. The deal would probably extend past two years and there would be a chunky bag of guaranteed money included.

The lesser commitment is obviously cheaper -- probably $4-$5 million per year with incentive clauses that would hike the deal's worth if Flynn wins the starting job, thus deserving more money. This kind of deal protects the team if he fails.

Flynn is worth one but definitely not the other. He is a value if signing a deal that protects the team in case he's more A.J. Feeley than Drew Brees. He still gets paid if he becomes a star. But he has to earn his money rather than getting it the minute he walks in the locker room.

Makes sense, right?

The problem is Flynn wants to maximize his earning. He will want the biggest deal he can get, certainly his agent will want that. And because he's got two quarterback-hungry teams talking to him, he might be able to leverage one versus the other to get what he wants.

(Personally, I don't see the Seahawks letting themselves be held up. They paid Travaris Jackson a two-year deal worth $8 million last season. I assume if they offer Flynn, it'll be a similar deal and ask him to fight for the starting job. I say this because you must remember Flynn was not Seattle's top QB choice this offseason. They actually scheduled Chad Henne to come to town before Flynn. Henne never made it because he signed with Jacksonville.)

Well, the Dolphins can similarly make the case that Flynn is not their top choice. At least I hope they make that case. Everyone knows they wanted Peyton Manning. And I assume they aren't going to use the money on Flynn that they would have used on Manning.

At least I hope not because that's just dumb.

I guess what I'm asking is for the Dolphins to hold their desperation in check. Getting Flynn simply isn't like getting Manning. We don't even know if he's any good.

With Flynn it's not just about getting him to come. As a relatively unproven player, he has to come at the right price -- for the team.

For weeks you have been laughing at Flynn saying he is useless garbage. Now you say what?

philbin wasnt the head coach. and ireland has no idea on much of anything other than drafting big slow guys. philbin couldnt even call plays in gb. didnt have say in anything.

dusty, maybe not 1500 yards but you're smart enough to know what I mean...Welker, Branch, how many others were garbage before they hooked up with Brady...

The Dolphins traded Brandon Marshall to Chicago soon after his involvement in a night-club fracas in New York. His new quarterback, Jay Cutler, said, “It’s a shame that his past still haunts him.” Yeah, Jay. How true. What a shame that when you did something almost a week ago, some people act like it was yesterday."Cote

No kidding Philbin wasn't the HC. He's still well respected by players. The rest of your post is just personal opinions and nothing else...

I hate to tell you guys but the dolphins are rebuilding. New offense being installed means you need the right players to fit that scheme. If you're waiting to blame Philbin or anyone else you're a fool. There is no way this team is expecting to make the playoffs after having to fix Parcells/Irelands mistakes with Ireland who helped make those very mistakes. Philbin needs his type of players before the team can grow within the system. The team will ask us to be patient,,,again. Any bandwagon fans, usually the people who whine the loudest, will be gone by years end and then we can rebuild the fan base to.

Clueless Bears has penis breath.

1st of all dude, I've been watching long football long enough to know how it works.

I appreciate your optimism but i'm just beginning to wonder if Ireland is ever gonna get it.

Obviously you would prefer build your nuclues through the draft and fill holes with free agency.

The Patriots that you mentioned have always been very active in free agency and trades. Corey Dillon, Rodney Harrison, and Wes Welker immediatley come to mind.

The Steelers have had their share of free agent successes as well.

The Bucs added Keshon Johnson. Simeon Rice and QB Brad Johnson to make their SB run.

We should have been in the Brandon Lloyd race. Especially after trading Marshall.

How many rookies can you have in your starting line-up and expect to win?

dusty Philbin created the Green Bay offense and helped develop Arron Rodgers and others. McCarthy has said so himself. So you are wrong that Philbin didn't have say in anything. Wrong and dumb to think an offensive coordinator had no say. So dumb. So so so so dumb. He's the one who got the game plan ready every week. The head coach liked calling plays from the field. Philbin sat in booth and the two worked back and forth during the games . Two heads working, just like what's going to happen this year in miami with mike sherman and he. Mike will draw up the game plan and work with the qbs during the week. Joe will most likely call the plays from the sideleine and run the practices during the week. Just like it was done in green bay. sorry youre wrong.

brandon lloyd is not a fast footed guy, not what philbin is looking for in his offense. hes looking quick speedy wideouts who can create yards after catch. lloyd would have eaten up the rest of the cap.

Philbin was at Green Bay, not GM of course, when Flynn was drafted by them. He has worked with him for four years. If Philbin likes him, and he signs here, kinda like drafting your own guy.

The 49ers went 13-3 last year with a 1st year HC.

I don't believe the Dolphins can afford to go back to another 3 or 4 year rebuilding mode.

Dolfan Rick, check out the rosters of those teams you're talking about and you'll see a lot of those guys came from the draft. The Patriots are loaded with them. Yes they did sign a couple of key free agents but the way they draft is what keeps them going. Same with the Baltimore Ravens. Same with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 49ers have drafted very well for a few years now and look where they are. Free agency is a nice alternative to add depth to your team. That's it. If free agency would be the way to do it, Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones would win the SB every year...

Fins will get 2, maybe 3, thru the draft and undrafted FA to go with current WRs.
More concerned with TE on offense and safety on defense.
1st concern has to be QB if nothing else to backup Moore.
We have to wait now for Coach Joe to make the call on Flynn otherwise see Tannehill or Cousins in the draft.

Maybe the Dolphins are NOT so convinced about Flynn...Maybe they're waiting to see where Peyton ends up...If it's Denver, Tebow becomes available...If it's SF, Alex Smith becomes available...And already plays in a west coast offense...Everybody thinks Flynn will be signed by the Dolphins just because of his connection with Philbin...

Tampa, I read somewhere that this Richard Marshall guy is a better safety than he is a corner...free safety that is...

What your missing is that I never said we should build our team through free agency.

We've been adding draft picks for 4 years now. What i'm saying is when you have glowing areas of need and there are players out there, you go get them.

You know like the Pats just did with Brandon Lloyd and the Cowboys did with Brandon Carr etc etc.

Tebow LOL. Worst passer in the NFL is going to run Philbins offense? Not a chance. Tebow will be working at whole foods in two years.

Tebow equals money with seats filled for Mr. Ross. Does not really fit WC offense.
Alex Smith is a former 1 pick that might work with new coaches but will be more expensive than Flynn, but maybe based on the fact he has already proven.
Do not believe SF gets better with Manning over Smith, may be a game being played in SF.

You are right about the back-up for Moore.

I think a lot of folks are missing that. With Henne gone we haven't got squat behind Moore.

You are correct about Marshall but we need a FS and a nickel.
Will Allen is gone and need a safety also.
Would love to see fins settle QB issue and sign Nelson but time is becoming an issue.

Dolfan Rick, you're the one that was biatching about us not doing anything in free agency, TB signed all these guys and all that stuff...So that's how this free agency debate started...

Tampa, apparently Nelson is very close to signing with the Jets...

And the Jets are trying to sign Landry as well...

Tampa, I understand your point about Tebow, but Ross only cares about selling tickets...And besides, they were after Manning and how well does he fit in a west coast offense?

I don't think i whine as much as most. Just getting really tired of our team not being in the playoffs and driving all the way to Miami to watch the arrogant Jets and Pats fans get their way.

I think we are close though. Thats why our slow start in the off season has been a little tough to take.

Hopefully we'll get Flynn signed and kick some butt in the draft.

Agree, I actually like Tim as person and a QB but not so sure Coach Joe wants to create the offense suited for his skill set. Works well in NCAA not sure at NFL speed.
Mr. Ross on the other hand has seat sales and only seat sales in mind.

Dolfan Rick, never thought of you as a whiner. And I feel the same way as you, tired of losing. I want to wait and see what happens. I really think the Dolphins are far from being done. I can see a lot of changes coming up...

We, all real fans, are tired of losing.
Just waiting for REAL changes that may be happening.
Have doubts about Flynn but want to trust new HC and we can sign with starter incentives
and let Moore know if he wins the job, he will be taken care of.
Regardless, fins must draft a QB in Rd 1, 2, or 3 depending on Flynn, Smith or even Haselback. Need 3.

Could the following happen?

Fins sign Flynn to secure him.

Ross signs Tebow (stadium filler) if he becomes available.

Ross trades Moore.

To repeat a statement made earlier, several current players need to have cap numbers fixed to include Long, extension and spread, Dansby, Bell, McDaniels, Fasano extension and spread or release, and maybe Bush extension and spread.
Fins should not be cap strapped. Current stating QB has cap # of $3.775M. Not starter #.
Not sure why they are.

Not even Ireland is dumb enough to bring Teboner here. The guy is useless.

Swam my,
Totally possible.

Not sure what . means?
Mr. Ross put on a tribute to Tebow in Miami and sold out the stadium, unless I am mistaken.
Ireland works for who?

One show big deal. South Florida is for partyers and sinners, they are not going to come to the stadium to watch some bible thumping qb pray on the field. Besides,he can't throw, no way Philbin wants him.

See comment at 9:48, I agree but Mr. Ross owns the team.
Does not fit Couch Joe's WC offense but Peyton did not either.

Comparing Tebow to Peyton? Please. Peyton can handle any offense period.

A healthy Peyton is as skillful as the come, there is no offense he couldn't master.

Flynn signed. Philbin happy.

Tebow signed. Ross happier.

Ideally for Ross, Tebow beats Flynn in a fair competition.

But, will Flynn fill the seats if he beats Tebow?

Tebow won't fill the seats, you are mistaken. S. Florida fans don't want to see no bible thumping QB praying on the field. That was a special event last year that brought down fans from up north, they won't be coming every Sunday. Winning fills up the stands. Tebow won't win games because he has the worst arm in the league.

What is this blog good for?? Huge off season movement right now and we get an update every 2-3 days! Come on man, give us something, do a decent job of covering this team.. Every time i look back at this site there is never an update. Give us something even if its an opinion, or find a different job.

Wow we lost Langford too!

Tebow will fill seats. Ross would love to get him

Irescum isnt smart enough to get Tebow.

The Chiefs' contract with Eric Winston is reportedly a four-year deal worth $22 million.

I'M SO DONE WITH THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont even want Matt Flynn. Play Moore and draft 2 QB's for the rebuild.

AND LANGFORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have no talent and no cap space!! Ireland doesnt know how to manage the cap. BTW, I cant believe we resigned Merling. He stinks.

I agree Dave! Merling is brutal! Done nothing! All you hear is upside!! After 3 years forget it!

Merling excels at beating pregnant women, though.

I know the homers will disagree but its going to take 3 years to fix Ireland's mess.....AFTER HE IS FIRED!

That he does!! I never been so aggravated a Dolphin fan before!! Manning made us look like fools! As expected! They will settle for Matt Flynn, if they can even get him. He is a backup at best!

AND THE DUMB FANS ..........

I've given up as a fan. I wont spend another penny on this garbage, I just laugh at the continuing incompetence so I dont cry.

The worse thing that ever happened was Ross! Parcells was a joke. Hiring that dinosoar Henning!!

If they find that Brandon Marshall didn't do anything but protect his wife, worst decision ever!!

Top 5 received gone!

I'm so tired of watching NE always make the right decisions and Miami FF everything up!

Agreed, this team is so desperate if they ever go 8-8 again they'll throw a parade. LOL

If they pay Matt Flynn a ton of money, there is nothing more to say!!!

Worst NFL franchise!! I never thought I would say it.

I can see it now, and with the 8th pick Miami selects "whoever" right tackle.

Oh wait, they will sign Flynn and take Tannehil at 8!

FFin idiots!
