Getting Flynn at right price as important as getting him

The question today is apparently not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Matt Flynn. It seems if the team gets a chance to sign the Green Bay free agent backup quarterback, that is exactly what will happen.

No, the question I believe more important is not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Flynn but how they'll try to sign Flynn. It's a completely different issue and definitely as important an issue.

Flynn, according to a reliable source, will be in town sometime late tonight. He'll be here, assuming he doesn't get blown away by the Seattle Seahawks and simply jumps at the opportunity. But once he arrives, then what?

What to do with Flynn?

Do the Dolphins commit to Flynn as their starter or do they commit to him as, ahem, a quarterback who will come to camp and compete with Matt Moore for the starting job. In other words, do the Dolphins commit starting quarterback money or do they commit the kind of money a player who has a chance to start but isn't certain of that typically gets?

If the Dolphins are committing to Flynn as their starter, they may have to spend between $7-$9 million per season. The deal would probably extend past two years and there would be a chunky bag of guaranteed money included.

The lesser commitment is obviously cheaper -- probably $4-$5 million per year with incentive clauses that would hike the deal's worth if Flynn wins the starting job, thus deserving more money. This kind of deal protects the team if he fails.

Me?

Flynn is worth one but definitely not the other. He is a value if signing a deal that protects the team in case he's more A.J. Feeley than Drew Brees. He still gets paid if he becomes a star. But he has to earn his money rather than getting it the minute he walks in the locker room.

Makes sense, right?

The problem is Flynn wants to maximize his earning. He will want the biggest deal he can get, certainly his agent will want that. And because he's got two quarterback-hungry teams talking to him, he might be able to leverage one versus the other to get what he wants.

(Personally, I don't see the Seahawks letting themselves be held up. They paid Travaris Jackson a two-year deal worth $8 million last season. I assume if they offer Flynn, it'll be a similar deal and ask him to fight for the starting job. I say this because you must remember Flynn was not Seattle's top QB choice this offseason. They actually scheduled Chad Henne to come to town before Flynn. Henne never made it because he signed with Jacksonville.)

Well, the Dolphins can similarly make the case that Flynn is not their top choice. At least I hope they make that case. Everyone knows they wanted Peyton Manning. And I assume they aren't going to use the money on Flynn that they would have used on Manning.

At least I hope not because that's just dumb.

I guess what I'm asking is for the Dolphins to hold their desperation in check. Getting Flynn simply isn't like getting Manning. We don't even know if he's any good.

With Flynn it's not just about getting him to come. As a relatively unproven player, he has to come at the right price -- for the team.

Show me WHERE...did we ever offer Peyton a contract?

Until you can show me that...he did NOT turn us down.

I am with John and DC- First and formost a fin fan, I like Moore, but Flynn could be the answer. The D is solid, I think we have a cerebral coach. We will bulk up the line and get one more playmaker. Our offense will work in the WCO style.

Another season of FA and another draft and same ol same ol.

The FA opens up and the Bills go after what they want aggressively and land Super M. The Pats are looking to land another slot WR and the Rex will shock the league as they sit quietly ready to pounce on talent as they always do.

The Dolphins Jeff "THE SCOUT" Ireland gets REALY aggressive by signing a 33yr old offensive reserve lineman Artis Hicks.

Now at this juncture I have said all along that we need to move up and make a move for WR Blackmon. Will that happen? I give that a 10% chance.

Tebow is on Ross mind now as the ONLY star in HIS MIND that will put azzs in seats at sun life.

I wouldn't be totally surprised if THAT is the Fins Big move.

FLYNN or whoever you want as a QB but NO TEBOW please.

I will give the new HC Philbin the opportunity to turn this team around. He deserves that chance. I will just like you evaluate him as he makes his moves and as the season plays out.

In the end, my same ol same ol is that as long as Miami keeps the left over Virus THE SCOUT we are what we are and look for VALUE picks and acorns and let's see how this plays out.

REMEMBER... We have been promised by the owner that he will bring in a STAR QB. Lets HOPE and PRAY that it is NOT Tebow.

Somebody @ 10:15 knows me well...lol...

:-)

That's good impostor....does it make it look like more and more people are saying the same thing when you keep changing your sign in name? Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that.

It's just that everyone say 'such and such a move is a great move' and then 6 weeks into the season everyone is blasting the move and wants the guys out of town. Nust be a whole bunch of 'new' posters. Couldn't be the same guys who said that in the first place.

Manning called the brass and said he was not interested, semantics.

CAPS and all...

The posting under anonymous names several different times is completely pathetic. It's a waste of our blog space, if you're that upset just leave

No Rafael Ortega. Your chump chad!

Toronto,

I know we all want some young RG3 or Barkley or hope somehow Tannehill is Big Ben but realistically Ireland and Philbin are in the NFL for a reason. We all dump on Ireland but IMO it was Parcells holding this team back. Ireland has had 1 complete offseason where Parcells had no ties to Miami and with that he drafted a very good promising Center and traded for Reggie Bush who was a 1000 yard runner. He got production from a 6th round H-Back in Clay and Daniel Thomas when he was 100 percent ran through both Houston and Cleveland and looked like a very good player.

This is coming from me a glass half empty attitude with this team. But step back for a minute from the despicable way he Ireland handled Dez Bryant and his conservative draft approach last year where people wanted Mallet or Dalton and he really hasn't had a legit chance to put his stamp on the team. I approve of the Marshall trade. He was unreliable and unpredicatable as a human being in society and as a football player.

But the approach is we are not going to over spend because over spending is why so many teams fail. The Dolphins are taking a much more patient approach and that is put all our chips in for Peyton and once that failed it's we are not 1 player away so no need to over spend in FA when this team needs to rebuild anyway. They should of continued the rebuilding project after trifecta season 1 but the Wildcat was the worst thing that happened to Miami because Parcells knew he was old and tired and got impatient and went with luxury picks in Pat White and bad signings with injury riddled players like Grove and Smiley and even hoping Pennington could stay healthy. There was no coincidence once all the players got hurt and were done Parcells took off.

Give Philbin's vision (GB's vision) a chance which is being backed by Ireland at this point.

There are many talented WR's in this year's Draft. But talent alone does not make an NFL WR. Who would they be that can have successful NFL careers?

Craig-
I am not an impostor, get over yourself, I will cheer for the dolphins QB and the team. Who I want?? I don't get that choice, we are not denver boobs forcing a team to start a qb. I want 1st place, NO? Then I want a wildcard? No I want a winning record, and a team that busts their ass (like they did when they were 0-7, the one thing Tony did was keep them together)

Kris,

That's the way I see it right now too. Jets and the Dolphins battling it out for the basement. Both anywhere from 6-10 to 8-8. Maybe 6-10 is being optimistic. Bills will be better if Fitz is healthy this year and they add another WR. Pray Floyd doesn't end up with Buffalo. He should be a Dolphin.

Peyton to workout for Denver today.

I sure hope this does not bring Teboble into play here.

Bills will be 4-12 or 5-11. They are horrible. Our QB (whomever it is) is better than that train wreck.

Bug > Miami

Better coaching
Better players
Better fans
Better wings

I would take tebow for a 6th, make him a hybrid and throw him in different spots 10-15 plays per game. The kid cannot throw (though some sort of wild cat option could be fun) but he has strength and speed.

ctphins,

You're missing my point. Play GM. You can have Flynn or one of the kids in the draft. What do you do?

It has NOTHING to do with me. You're missing my point. I have a problem with people who jump on a bandwagon for a guy and then stick a fork in him and want to run him out of town six weeks later. You can't be right and wrong all in the same breath. If Flynn is your guy, you have to give him a 'chance'. I was a Henne guy....I admit. It didn't work out. I was wrong. But whoever the guy is he needs to get a chance. I just find it hard to understand how so many people can be sold on a guy (whoever it is) and then turns on the guy six weeks later. Life isn't like that.

The fact of the matter is when Flynn is signed, he is NOT going to get a warm welcome from the majority of Dolphins fans. Were not getting a big name here, but more an average guy. Being a Dolphins fan in Green Bay, the guy isn't that big and his arm is well, average at best. The Lions secondary is by far one of the worst in the league and if you don't put up 300+ yds, thats where the problem is. Another thing, who is he going to throw to anyway? There are no FA's left and Blackmon will be gone by the 8th pick and Floyd is not a physical type WR that we need w/o Marshall.

Mirriam Websters Urban Dictionary

Flynn: (flin): Acorn, prayer that dropped from a dark cloud, false hope, 7th round pick.

Bug lost to Miami 2x last year, crushed I believe in one game???? Our D is superior, wake with his contract is much better than Mario Haynseworth

IMO I believe the dolphins are targeting Tannehill and all the rest is smokescreen; Flynn possible depending on $. My reasons are

1. We started with 15 mil in cap space, but you need 4 or 5 mill for signing draftees. There was never enough money for Peyton.

2. We resigned Solai which left us with around 9 or 10 mil, still need the money for draftees.

3. We signed hicks and Marshall not sure how much that leaves us but maybe 4 mil to sign Flynn.

All of this leads me to believe we were resined to drafting Tannehill from the beginning, and I don't believe Cleveland will pick him at 4 but rather pick Blackmon or Richardson.

Wake is figured out, one season wonder. Mario is 10 times the player wake is. Nobody would share your opinion. Nobody.

Has anybody seen any comments from Home on the Herald-Coffee with home?

What I don't understand from the Dolphins is if you knew Manning wasn't coming (and don't kid yourself, they've had an inkling for a while now) and you are sold on Flynn, why take the CHANCE that Seattle impresses the Hell out of him and signs him. Why take the chance? Why does it take Flynn going on a plane to Seattle before you decide to offer him a contract? I don't get that style of managing. I'm the first guy on here to stick up for these guys but a move like that baffles me. Makes NO sense.

Craig, what's gotten into you (@ 10:21)? You're starting to sound like me. First bobbyd12, now YOU? This really, REALLY can't be good.

"Dolphins hosting pass rusher Mark Anderson today"

I don't know much about him, any opinions?

Wow! What a huge, huge disappointment this Miami Dolphins organization has become!!! I just can't believe every year, every season, it gets worst and worst. The respect is gone, pity is all that is left. This team menaces no one. Now a head coach with no head coaching experience, once again-no quaterback, no playmakers, a dumb clueless GM, and an owner that just sees this as his investment toy. Just because he's rich, he gets to get away with doing this to this once proud franchise. No one with class, notability, reputation, wants to come and work for this pathetic organization. My fellow fans, get ready for another season of boring, and disappointing let downs on sundays. We cannot continue to let this happen!

Craig-
Understood, I am a Moore guy, who thinks we need to bring in Flynn and draft. Flynn may be the answer. But where we are picking there is no sureQB draft pick, and I think Moore and or Flynn can hold the fort, while we pick other players. One man's opinion. So my vote is for flynn/moore over a drafted QB this year. If tebow or Hassleback comes in, I will root them on also.

Bottom line again is winning, I can change my mind and will as I trust our new coach, and will until/if we turn into a train wreck. Not week 6 of this year, but after a few years.

I think Kris, YG, odin and others are one and the same person. Armando is a different matter.

Craig M @ 1030...

I coudn't agree more....add to that letting Manning get to Denver...before scheduling a sit-down with a guy who is vactioning 30 mins from the stadium....

Baffaling....

First manning is a pu##y! If he was a real competiter why not want to face brady twice a year, second the afc west is a joke. Tenn. Is garbage with or without him. So is arz. so kick rocks manning. As for ross its time to get a clue no one likes you and as long as you own the team you will never lure a big name to miami and for that matter you wont even land a backup in flynn. He is not leaving seattle. Bottom line. Go ahead and draft tannehill, he sucks too. Maybe you can drool all over him.

GB Fin Fan...last time I checked we still have Hartline, Fasano, Bess, Bush, Thomas, Clay Wallace & Moore(WR) on the roster and none of them are injured...so I guess Flynn will try to hit one of them with a pass, correct?

Craig, just what kind of job do you have? Toll booth operator on a closed road? What other job allows you to post non stop all day every day?

ctphins,

What you don't mention in your critique of the Bills is that the QB played the second half of the season with broken ribs and the team itself was decimated with injuries. Seriously, go back and take a look. Key injuries to guys like Fred Jackson, Kyle Williams and others. They're a much better team than you're giving them credit for and that DL will do a lot of damage nect year. Mario Williams is NOTHING like Albert Haynesworth. Younger, harder worker, better attitude. Where are you getting that from? The size of his contract?

See what happens when you show your Trolls kindness....

It makes them come @ you from a WHOLE differnt angle....

Anderson played with Pats I believe, he has some good numbers. Sack guy.

BB- Williams will not be great in Buffao, mark it down. For the 1-2 million a year for wake (at this time) I will take a couple less sacks, we still havea superior D.. Sorry Bug fan.

Manning never wanted to consider the dolphins. The report out today is that it took Marino to call him as a favor. Peyton met with all the owners except for Ross. He did us a courtesy interview at our begging. This FO should never have put themselves in that position. No dignity.

KY, I HOPE we're still in the market to draft a QB. That could be the one saving grace of this Season (that we have a guy developing in the wings to take over once the team has been flipped to Philbin's liking).

I'm not getting that warm and fuzzy feeling though. To me it looks like we're getting a RT in the 1st round. If so, Tannehill will be gone, and the best we can hope for is Weeden. But if Weeden doesn't start by next year, there's no reason to get him (due to age).

ctphins,

Good points in your last post. Then my earlier comments aren't really addressed to you. It's the guys who say 'Flynn is the answer' and then say 'he's crap' by week 6. That's what I have a hard time with. Bandwagon jumping. Everyone can change their mind....but not after 6 weeks.

I'm fine with Moore and Flynn. I just don't see it making us appreciably better.

DC, a bit tired of these guys chasing their tail. You don't want to be around me if they ignore the WR position in the draft and go into the season with Harline and Bess and a couple of third rounder. I won't watch that crap.

Anyone else wonder how Yeremiah Bell continues to be overlooked, when we play NE twice a year, as a suitable option at Safety? Talk about wasted CAP space.

I say free yourself MORE room, dump Bell. Try Jones over there. Believe me, that alone won't make the team any worse than it probably already will be.

Yes craig, fat contract turns players into fat cats. Haynesworth in his prime would eat (literally probably!)Williams up. Wanny may do good things, but I am not worried about Buffalo. I worry about the team I root for and how they are being built. I live in Pats and Giants country (real teams vs Bills)I dont worry about them.

DC....

I think if we have both Flynn and Moore on our roster...we weon't be drafting a QB....

I think we are going down the path of GB and B'more and even the FINS of the past....build a GREAT TEAM...and if a GREAT QB prospects slips to us @ 20 something...snatch him up....

DC,

That's fine but where's the WR? Third round?.....GRRRRR.......

DC I may agree with you on the RT only if we somehow signed Flynn; I believe if we draft Tannehil we will go with Murtha as our RT

Haynesworth is a fat piece of garbage, he was motivated by money, ever since he got his money he went to the crapper.

So Chad henne got less to go to jax than Miami gave Moore last year yet there are some people who think we just jettisoned the next tom Brady.

Craig M,

I'll play GM.

I choose a head coach who has used, and will install the WCO, as our system.

There is a qb available who has already been groomed, in this system, by our coach.

The few times the qb played in real NFL games, he looked like he was a pretty good fit.

I understand looks can prove to be deceiving, but I'm going with my coach's opinion on this one, and signing Flynn.

Go ahead...write down my name.

2006 - Manning wins Superbowl
2007 - Manning loses to Chargers in divisional round
2008 - Manning loses to Chargers again in the DV round
2009 - Manning takes team to SB and loses to Saints
2010 - Manning loses to Jets in wildcard round

Point being...Manning peaked back in 06' and was lucky to make the SB in 09'

His production was slipping and this was with an offense 'built' specifically for him on a team that followed his every move.

I hate to speculate, but if Manning did chose Miami and we missed the playoffs, what would happen then?

Peyton comes with no guarantees just like Flynn and everyone kept viewing the Peyton highlights from his 04' and 06' seasons thinking that was what they were getting. False advertising if you ask me.

Move on folks, the circus has thankfully left town.

I am thinking a lot of smoke screen here. We will not dump money in big FA, Philbin is a builder. Can we re-work bell's contract and trade him for a 3rd or 4th round? There will be a rash of cuts as people get down to 53, thats when you pounce. Pats are great at doing that.

I will wait for the body of work and react to signings, but not react to the non signings.

DC,

I agree with you on Bell. I was waiting for him to be cut. He would save something like 4 M in cap space. That's no chump change. I agree he is a complete liability in coverage. NE picks on him and so did the Jets with Keller when Sanchez was smart enough to throw the ball his direction and not worry about Holmes and Braylon when he was there or Plax.

ctphins,

Sorry, Hayneworth was fat and lazy, with an attitude before he signed that contract with Washington. Williams is not that guy. Not saying it's not a crazy contract but it's not the same situation. Williams is 27 years old and still a productive player.

Here's an idea

Let's talk about Henne until he dies.

Lol Mando, our mgt screwed up free agency this season...Flynn's agent knows how desperate we are...nuff said.

So everything I hear says 'Manning really wasn't that into the Dophins'. How do the Dolphins not know this? How is it they let this stuff drag on to the point that Flynn is in Seattle ready to sign a contract with Seattle? Good luck to them dealing with the fanbase if Flynn signs with Seattle.

DC, I still believe Bell will get chopped. Not sure if they are waiting to see what happens with Flynn first but I don't think they need the capspace....YET. I still think this move is coming.

Ohio, mark Anderson is a decent pass rusher. Would be a good value signing. Had a good year with the pats last year.

I think wake is 80% plus of williams, and williams is not the answer for the bills.

NHFinsFan,
I understand they have those guys on the roster still, but I mean look at the productive of those said people. Not much really and like I said you need to have a guy on your roster that is a physical WR and they don't have one to put on the outside. We have for the most part guys that can catch it out of the backfield and a handful of slot receivers. In a West Coast offense, watching the Packers offense for many years. You need to have an intimidating down the field type of WR aka Jennings. I'm more concerned with their WR's than the QB situation because Flynn is basically all but signed here, as Seattle isn't a true team that he would go with.
