Quickie reaction report from Joe Philbin breakfast

Here's the quickie report from the Joe Philbin breakfast presser at the NFL annual meetings in Palm Beach:

To begin with and perhaps most importantly, Philbin isn't buying into the idea the Dolphins are a rebuilding team. "I think it would be a disservice to the players to say we're in a rebuilding mode."

That is probably true. And a fair point. But sometimes, folks, the truth is the truth. (More on that later today).

I asked Phibin what football reason he could give for the trading of Brandon Marshall. He called Marshall a "very talented player," but mostly he dogdged the question. In other words, he didn't give a reason.

It's been speculatated that the Miami offense doesn't have a No. 1 receiver that must get the ball a majority of the time. That idea has been put forth by folks diminishing the Marshall loss. But the idea the Dolphins don't need or want a No. 1 receiver is only partially true.

"Part of the philosophy of the offense is to have balance," Philbin said. "We want our quarterbacks to typically have what we call progression reads, where they're not necessarily isolated on one specific individual. With that being said, we're going to play to our hot hand and we're certainly going to strive to create mismatches and take advantage of the guys we do have.

"But the offense isn't necessarily built upon, 'Ok, you're the No. 1 guy, you're the No. 2 guy, you're the No. 3 guy.' As we put the plays together for the quarterback in his mind, there's a progression of who's the first receiver, who's the second receiver, who's the third receiver. But it's more multiple. We're looking at a variety of guys to line up in that spot. It's not necessarily that there isn't a one, but it's not that there is one, either. We're going to do whatever we have to do to move the ball effectively."

Confused? Moving on ...

The quarterback spot is always hugely important to the Dolphins primarily because they don't really have a proven one. Philbin said he spoke with Matt Moore and promised that he and David Garrard would be locked in an open competition before the season's start.

Philbin on Matt Moore based on tape study: "I thought he managed the game relatively well. Good arm strength. He has the knack. He moved the team."

Philbin said the biggest part of his visit with Garrard was for the medical staff to make sure he'd made complete recovery from last year's bulging disc that required surgery. Garrard worked out for the team before signing. "He moved well ... He spins the ball well ... I like his personality. He carries himself well."

Philbin had Jermichael Finley in Green Bay. He has Anthony Fasano in Miami. He "played well last year," Philbin said of Fasano. "He caught the ball well."

Philbin is a former offensive line coach. I asked him his thought of the Buffalo Bills signing Mario Williams and Mark Anderson. "Every team has good players. Last time I checked our left tackle is a pretty good player."

(Yeah, but what about the other side?)

Philbin says he's visited with left tackle Jake Long a couple of times. "I think he's ready to take on a more active leadership role in the ballclub."

On the right side, I asked Philbin if John Jerry will play guard or tackle. He said that was a good question and that the truth is, he's not sure yet.

Defensively, Philbin had a couple of interesting things to say.

Philbin says the defense will show the Bear (46) defense, three-man line, four-man line. He said Miami would be "multiple on defense."

Philbin said new signee Richard Marshall will get a chance to win one of the starting cornerback jobs.

Philbin said while not totally interchangeable, strong safety and free safety players could do one or the other. That means Tyrone Culver, Chris Clemons, and Reshad Jones will all be fighting for the strong and free safety spots rather than just the free safety spot all are more familiar with.

Philbin put a figurative target on third-year player Jared Odrick. He mentioned Odrick several times and made it clear he's hoping for bigger things. "In year three you'd like to see a guy really progress." The Dolphins don't have No. 2 pass-rusher Jason Taylor any more. They need Odrick to be a goods pass-rusher.

Overall, Philbin said he expects his team will develop week to week. He believes they will be better at the end of the year than they were early in the year:  "We're going to get better week in and week out, year in and year out."

Philbin promised a "sound football team. High effort. Smart football team. You're going to see a team that's tough physically and mentally.""

Armando stop the sucking up to Ross 7 the Dolphins

1st u told us the protest was a ridiculous waste of time

Until the Miami Dolphin Protest was featured on NFL Network,ESPN, Fox sports, all local tv stations and many national tv stations, all sports talk radio - locally and nationally, hundreds of NFL websites and the team owner actually set up a 27 minute phone call to hear the voice of one of the protesters

U were dead wrong Armando

The Miami Dolphins Protest across from JEF FIRELAND's was the most effective way to communicate to the inept embarrassing clueless Miami Dolphin owner, management, Dolfans and the entire world

U Armando told us to go to the games and scream from the stands hoping somehow Miami Dolphin's owner Steven Ross would hear and acknowledge us

or quit and never watch an NFL Miami Dolphin game again or buy merchandise

Today U Armando try to silence us!

We will not go away quietly or be silenced

We will fight

Fight for our rights to once again, have a good decent NFL football team in south Florida called the Miami Dolphins

Occupy Davie 3.29.12 Protest March against extremely poor management of the Miami Dolphins

Home 4 Christ's Sake ;)

Productive breakfast... pfft :)

Here you go Armondo. These are your fans now. If this is the kind of fans you want following you ... you have succeeded. But this is a very limited fan base and I believe will get smaller as the season progresses.

What about the two receivers we kept on the roster all of last season? Are they ready to play this season?

Hey Armando, did he say "whose the first receiver' whose the second" etc, or did he say who IS the first receiver, who IS the second, etc? Good thing you don't write for a living.... oh wait... you do!

@Coffee Talk w Home: You are an idiot...PERIOD!

I told you, remodeling, man, remodeling.

Washed up 34 yr old fired QB from a losing JAX franchise that has been elf admittedly "sitting on the couch" for one year following herniated disk spine surgery Garrard completes JEF FIRELAND's search fro the Miami Dolphoons QB

Jeff Ireland is a complete idiot

The team also has no #1 WR because racist GM JEF FIRELAND "cut" Marshall because his wife was a VICTIM of a crime

No other WRs can get open unless the team has a #1 WR demanding double and triple coverage on each and every play

Dolphoons also have no defensive captain or leading tackler of four years because JEF FIRELAND refused to sign Y-Bell

Dolphoons also let veteran CB Will Allen leave ans sign with Super Bowl runner up in our division
Patriots immediately signed CB Will Allen for 1 million dollars

Sherman our new OC was FIRED from Texas A&M for piss poor performance losing 3 double digit leads in the 4th Q and going a dismal embarrassing 6-6 in a weak college division

The Dolphins SUCK

If Philbin thought Marlin Moore or Roberto Wallace could replace BM, I seriously doubt he would say so right now, not before the draft.

Ross if your not gonna sell the team the least you could do is fire Ireland and get a decent GM.

When will the Dolphins return to glory? We need to spend more time bashing the Jets and Patriots and not our own team.

One question Mando. If Dolphins are in a "rebuilding mode", why don´t they trade Dansby and Burnett? Why did they sign Hicks???

Stop Bashing, the team your supposed to be supporting! If thats your character then start reporting for the JETS!!!!!!!!!!! and spare the Dolphins with your crappy articles!

Well at least Philbin sounds confident and I trust the guy to build this team following the Green Bay model. That said, Ireland MUST pull some ambitious move this draft. Offense needs to prevail as skilled positions do take a year or two to develop unlike DE/DT who can make a more immediate impact, and this time next year we should be position to take another player like Coples, who today yes is the most talented at 8th but does not meet our most pressing needs considering we are a year or two from contention (hopefully).

It is absolutely pivotal what we do with the pick at 8th (please I implore the top brass DO NOT reach for Tannehill here, he's good but not 8th pick good, not even close, let another team make that mistake). In a perfect world we trade down but that is a huge IF, since other teams may not be interested. If that is the case we may see Trent Richardson fall to us there. Pick him. Reiff would be another horrendous reach and I guarantee you will see no 30 but 3,000 people outside the building. By having the trio of Bush/Richardson/Thomas you will have a formidable running attack that will take a lot of pressure off the QB and the line. Bush will play his heart out since his contract expires next year and if he does depending on our position in the standings the team can decide to: A. Keep him or B. Trade him before the week 6-8 deadline and get a ransom pick(s) for 2013.

Now if Ireland makes good and we do trade down then we can use the picks to get playmakers on offense to be groomed like WR Stephen Hill from WR-rich school GT, and TE Coby Fleener, the only good TE perhaps in the entire draft and an position that we have neglected badly.
This is my ideal mock then:

-1st Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama; or IF we trade down then Stephen Hill, WR, GT
-Late 1st/early 2nd (trade up) Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford
-3rd Tommy Streeter, WR, The U
-3rd Derek Wolfe, DE/DT, Cincy
-4th Kirk Cousins, QB, MSU
-4th (trade up), T.Y. Hilton, WR, FIU
-5th Jamell Fleming, CB/S, Oklahoma
-5th (trade up) Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin
-6th Cordarro Law, LB, Southern Miss
-Undrafted- Adrien Robinson, TE, Cincy

I like Cousins a lot, he reminds me, as Mando stated, a young Tom Brady. Wilson is as tall as Brees and has a lot of moxie in his game and perhaps the best arm in the draft and he's quite a well rounded athlete. Draft both, excellent value and it is IMPERATIVE to start grooming our future QB today and not wait for another year.

"I think everybody that puts on a uniform other than the Miami Dolphins , you want to go out there and you want to play. That’s why you play the game of football. I’m excited to be a Jet and certainly not a Dolphin When was the last time the Dolphins competed in the AFC championship game > like 20 years ago (lol), to go out there and to help this team any way that I can. Whatever my role is, however I can expand that role, I’m going to try to do that. Last year my first chance i got i've already earned several NFL records. I apologize for destroying the Dolphins at Home. I did not think it would be sooo easy. Every day in practice I’m going to go out there and compete and try to get better as a quarterback, try to figure out any ways possible to help this team any way that I can."

The Wildcat & Spread offense lives with Tony Sparano & I

QB/FB Tim Tebow

and breakfast turns to ? in a couple of hours.

"Ryan referred to Sparano as “one of the most creative guys I’ve been around” and described himself as “excited” — a word Tebow used dozens of times during his introductory press conference on Monday — about how Sparano can utilize Tebow’s skills."

Creative???? LMFAO!!! They're even more screwed up then we are.

Home and Truth...the same guy. And for you to say Ross sits in his 1.1 Billion dollar trash pile is ironic considering your team plays in a stadium built in the state of trash dumps. Your stadiums are built on land cleared from trash dumps. Take your idiotic verbal diarrhea and go suck on fat Rex Ryan's toes and watch the Jets as they yet again implode. They are a big pile of selfish losers that will tey again be a big dissapointment. They have alot of talent but still can't work together well enough to win games. The Phins beat them one of two games every year for god sake.

"Philbin promised a "sound football team. High effort. Smart football team. You're going to see a team that's tough physically and mentally."

I hope he's right but isn't this EXACTLY what Sparano said????

Jets are horrible. Hahaha!!! Such a joke.

Home, you forgot to change you name back to Truth on your 10:35am comment. What a maroooon!

Hey Home, how many times do the Not Yets need to make to to the championship and lose before they realize what a bunch of goober losers they are. What a joke of a team. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Cameron said it too. YAWN.

Ohio's post got whacked for promoting his douche blog on Armando's blog!

Hey Nick, isn't what you just said exactly what "We Have Draft Picks" already said. Get an orignal thought, will you? Bunch of morons on this blog. No wonder other teams fans think we're goobers.

7-9 go hum

Just good enough to not get a great draft pick

Hey CFPHINFAN, those little marks on each end of the paragraph that Nick posted are called quotation marks you big dummy. He was reposting a previous comment and made one of his own along with it. Talk about goober. Go back to sleep.

I predict that unless there is some injury that Smith and Davis will be the starting corners! Marshall is not very good per profootballfocus.com...Also, if we don't trade down, I also predict that we will draft Melvin Ingram as he can play several positions and would be a natural for the 4-6 defense. Good day!

The protestors are still tools. Whether you delete me or not!!

wow just........wow

so I contribute to this blog for a decade...continue to contribute this blog, and just am having a little fun being creative with on of my own, and I get wacked

Meanwhile, some guy who adds nothing and picks fights with everyone gets to stay?

What kind of blog to you want here? Did you even read my e-mail? I wanted to use my blog to continue sending people here. You know, people that can have real conversations. Wanted to just co-exist, you work at the Herald I could never come close to your following, are you that worried that you have delete my post??

Im tired posting about this mediocare Dolphins team.

I love when you Jets fans think Tebow is so great. He is a joke. He's a good humanitarian, nice guy but he CANNOT run an NFL style offense. The Jets are gonna have to change the whole scheme around him because all he can do is run the college play option and wild cat. I am so happy the Jets got him. That means the Phins will be #2 this year behind the Pats. Jets + Obnoxious Fans = LOOOOOOOOSSSEEEEERRRRRRSSSS!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

The bottom line, the Dolphins are a bad to mediocre team and things won't change until they change management.

CFPHINFAN isnt the brightest bulb in the closet.

Wow! I got on to hopefully have an intelligent conversation with REAL Dolphin Fans and this is what I walk into? Some idiot named Home and a few other names that all appear to be him as well. This blog is becoming a joke. Are there any REAL fans in here that have anything positive to say? I would love to hear it.

Armando, please block this guy "Home for Christ's Sake" and his other fake names from this site. He is a cancer on all of us REAL fans and only promotes ignorance on your blog. Is that what you really want?

Great. Joe Philbin sounds exactly like how he looks - a complete and total chucklehead.
Just disband the franchise already.

Please don't disband it. Since it's inception, this blog has not seen Craig M. That's GREAT!

Now, if we could just add Home to the list of former posters here!

Why don't you post with a real name?

Oh he got deleted..........haha

Ohio, if you can't see what is unethical about promoting your blog on Armando's blog, then you are hopeless.

Ohio, dont worry about it your blog rocks dude

Ohio does your drivers license say Ohio Dolfan?

You can't figure out why he dumped BM? The guy dropped more TDs than he caught, then was a superstar when it didn't count in the Pro Bowl. And with his chance to represent the team after the PB what did the guy do? He slammed the QB who got him there. Not a team-first player, not worth the $$$, and never worth any picks. Hated the trade for BM when they did it, and glad to see him go.

Hey All

Don't come here. Check our my blog on www.si.com

Ban home. If not, you & your blog are more of a joke than the team you "blog" about.

I am a Miami-Dade County resident. I think the management of the Miami Dolphins organization has had a problem with Miami ever since Wayne Huizenga owned the club. Wayne took a lot from Miami-Dade county, but gave back very little to that 'Third World Country'. He took the Dolphins training camp from St. Thomas University to NSU in Broward; he has never, that I know of, made any contributions to any non-profit organization in Miami-Dade; the team seems to have wasted many opportunities to draft good players from U of M, etc. Many players, including Marino, and coach Don Shula lived in Miami Lakes. They all moved out of the county. However, I would say Wayne never had a problem TAKING money from Miami-Dade. Now, it seems all press conferences are being in made in West Palm Beach. Again, no business for Miami-Dade. Compare that to the Miami Marlins. Maybe baseball is the sport for The Third-World County. And, actually, I probably enjoy the games of the University of Miami more that I enjoy the games of the 'West Palm Beach and Broward Dolphins'. Who do you think will get my money?

Time to go to Ohio.

Garrard is the back-up. I'd rather not read about him on this blog unless absolutely necessary. Its depressing.

Regarding the 'progression' BS, that was exactly the difference between henne and moore. Henne kept choose not to throw to Marshall and look where that got him.

Time to go to Ohio.

Feel free to join him!

Translation::: More of the same old same old. Welcome Yawwwwwn

I'm not saying Philbin is gonna be a bad coach. I like him. I liked Sparano. But doesn't this all just stink of the same garbage they've been feeding us over and over again? New coach, new system, gonna be tough and disciplined...blah, blah, blah. But all the while ignoring the fact that we have NO TALENT! Thats kinda a big issue. I thought Brian Hartline was a joke as a #2 WR last year and now he's our top guy? Spin it all you want with "there is no #1 or #2", fact of the matter is we have a SERIOUS lack of talent at WR.

So the way I see it, this all just stinks of standard Dolphins football garbage. Solid defense. No offense. New coach. New system. Propoganda by management to try and make us excited. Then disappointment and heart ache when the losing season commences. Then it all starts over again.

Im 100% in Philbin, Moore was a very good QB at the end of the season, and Use Marshall on occasional bombs or endzone, which Marshall disapointed 50% of the time, Moore spread the ball around to Fasano, Bush, Clay, Hartline and Bess, remember that last jet game where Moore used Bess in the slot like never before? Roberto Wallace was Moore toy too but suffered a season ending injury early in the year.

When are you addressing SS & OT in your draft? And why draft RB so high?

Keeping in mind deep draft in WR (thank god), OL, and inside linebacker, this would be the "Realistic" preferred draft:

1st Round: CB - Claiborne
2nd: WR - Stephen Hill (think a young Megatron).
2nd: SS - Mark Barron (Trade 2 3rd round pics to move up to 2nd rd).
4th: QB - Kirk Cousins
4th: WR - T.Y. Hilton (I'm a FIU grad. Trade 4 & 5rd pics to move up).
6th: OT
Undrafted: ILB

Ohio, I follow another blog for a hockey team. The writer has a side box with web site names from other blogs so fans have a variety of places to check out team news. He sometimes promotes the other blogs and allows those writers to be guest writers in his blog. The writer worked for the team for over 20 years as their media and fan representative so he knows his stuff.

The side box actually helps his blog because his blog is the FIRST everyone stops at before moving on. You read his and then you just click on another to see what other sites are saying. It has made him the father (of sorts) of that teams blogs. Everyone goes to him first.

I believe in Armando's case, if you would allow me to play devils advocate for a moment, it's different because he does not own the blog title or domain like the hockey guy. It is owned by the paper and they want to squeeze every penny they can, rightfully so, out of their consumers. I'm sure Armando has nothing against you and has probably visited your blog a couple of times himself just to see what's going on. But I don't believe it's him personally that objects to your blog being promoted, more likely it's the people who own the paper. Of course I could be wrong :)

Oh, I just saw a show on TV called "The Price Is Right" and a woman spun this big wheel and it landed on '$1.00' and she won a THOUSAND DOLLARS!! Oh, it is all just so grand and exciting!!

One positive so far....at least my brain doesn't feel so scrambled after reading Philbin's quotes from his pressers here.

Thank you for the kind and thoughtful and caring message. You are a very sweet man.

I like how Philbin carries himself. Seems allot smarter than most of our previous coaches since Shula. There is hope...

On a side note since there is no football news I would like to thank the Miami Heat for making complete fools of themselves with the whole "hoody for Travon" protest. Maybe people should wait to hear the ACTUAL FACTS of stories before jumping to conclusions.

First it was the Duke Lacrosse players and now this poor Zimmerman (who half of the country still believe is a white male and have no clue he is Hispanic) guy who is being called a racist and receiving death threats because the media painted this unfortunate incident in such a way that it has incited the country into a frenzy. Making this kid out to be an innocent little boy walking home with Skittles in his pocket.

Now we find out that he actually started the violence, punching the man in the face, knocking him to the ground, grabbing him by the hair, and repeatedly smashing his head into the ground. An eyewitness who happens to be a young African American boy gave the same account to the police that Zimmerman did.

When will the media be held accountable for their mistakes. They're hurting peoples lives trying to chase the story that isn't there. They spin the news to sell their product and innocent people suffer. Then they come back the next day, no apology, and act like nothing happened. IT'S SICKENING!!! When will our society start holding these media members accountable for their actions, when will we demand higher standards from our reporters?
