Quickie reaction report from Joe Philbin breakfast

Here's the quickie report from the Joe Philbin breakfast presser at the NFL annual meetings in Palm Beach:

To begin with and perhaps most importantly, Philbin isn't buying into the idea the Dolphins are a rebuilding team. "I think it would be a disservice to the players to say we're in a rebuilding mode."

That is probably true. And a fair point. But sometimes, folks, the truth is the truth. (More on that later today).

I asked Phibin what football reason he could give for the trading of Brandon Marshall. He called Marshall a "very talented player," but mostly he dogdged the question. In other words, he didn't give a reason.

It's been speculatated that the Miami offense doesn't have a No. 1 receiver that must get the ball a majority of the time. That idea has been put forth by folks diminishing the Marshall loss. But the idea the Dolphins don't need or want a No. 1 receiver is only partially true.

"Part of the philosophy of the offense is to have balance," Philbin said. "We want our quarterbacks to typically have what we call progression reads, where they're not necessarily isolated on one specific individual. With that being said, we're going to play to our hot hand and we're certainly going to strive to create mismatches and take advantage of the guys we do have.

"But the offense isn't necessarily built upon, 'Ok, you're the No. 1 guy, you're the No. 2 guy, you're the No. 3 guy.' As we put the plays together for the quarterback in his mind, there's a progression of who's the first receiver, who's the second receiver, who's the third receiver. But it's more multiple. We're looking at a variety of guys to line up in that spot. It's not necessarily that there isn't a one, but it's not that there is one, either. We're going to do whatever we have to do to move the ball effectively."

Confused? Moving on ...

The quarterback spot is always hugely important to the Dolphins primarily because they don't really have a proven one. Philbin said he spoke with Matt Moore and promised that he and David Garrard would be locked in an open competition before the season's start.

Philbin on Matt Moore based on tape study: "I thought he managed the game relatively well. Good arm strength. He has the knack. He moved the team."

Philbin said the biggest part of his visit with Garrard was for the medical staff to make sure he'd made complete recovery from last year's bulging disc that required surgery. Garrard worked out for the team before signing. "He moved well ... He spins the ball well ... I like his personality. He carries himself well."

Philbin had Jermichael Finley in Green Bay. He has Anthony Fasano in Miami. He "played well last year," Philbin said of Fasano. "He caught the ball well."

Philbin is a former offensive line coach. I asked him his thought of the Buffalo Bills signing Mario Williams and Mark Anderson. "Every team has good players. Last time I checked our left tackle is a pretty good player."

(Yeah, but what about the other side?)

Philbin says he's visited with left tackle Jake Long a couple of times. "I think he's ready to take on a more active leadership role in the ballclub."

On the right side, I asked Philbin if John Jerry will play guard or tackle. He said that was a good question and that the truth is, he's not sure yet.

Defensively, Philbin had a couple of interesting things to say.

Philbin says the defense will show the Bear (46) defense, three-man line, four-man line. He said Miami would be "multiple on defense."

Philbin said new signee Richard Marshall will get a chance to win one of the starting cornerback jobs.

Philbin said while not totally interchangeable, strong safety and free safety players could do one or the other. That means Tyrone Culver, Chris Clemons, and Reshad Jones will all be fighting for the strong and free safety spots rather than just the free safety spot all are more familiar with.

Philbin put a figurative target on third-year player Jared Odrick. He mentioned Odrick several times and made it clear he's hoping for bigger things. "In year three you'd like to see a guy really progress." The Dolphins don't have No. 2 pass-rusher Jason Taylor any more. They need Odrick to be a goods pass-rusher.

Overall, Philbin said he expects his team will develop week to week. He believes they will be better at the end of the year than they were early in the year:  "We're going to get better week in and week out, year in and year out."

Philbin promised a "sound football team. High effort. Smart football team. You're going to see a team that's tough physically and mentally.""

It seems as if phins78 has found his way to the ohio blog too. Paragraph after paragraph of bologna.

Is there no viable alternative to not having to see the ramblings of this blabbermouth?

In saying that to Ohio I also would like to point out to Armando the benefits of allowing fan site names (only) to be displayed on the side or just written in a post. Maybe he can bring the idea to management and have them think about it.

Surely they aren't worried about losing blog hits? If they were they wouldn't allow all of the personal attacks and vulgar posts. They're trying to protect the integrity of their blogs but still allow an anything goes approach which is actually chasing intelligent people away,,,,,TO OTHER BLOGS! There is definitely a major flaw in their thinking.

I might have contributed all day since this week is dead at work and I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs. But why expose myself to unwarranted attacks when I can just go somewhere else? See ya, have fun with your resident psychos.

Well that all sounds really good....now can they deliver on that? I still believe there will be a safety adding in the top 73 picks by us (we have 4 of the top 73 picks). Does anyone know why we pick 8th in the first round but not until 10th in the second round? Buffalo picks ahead of us in the second round. I don't get.....help?

Don't worry guy who is afraid to stand up for himself. You just keep changing your name you frightened little boy. I'm leaving just like you wanted, and soon enough others will too. You wouldn't notice but they already have started leaving. Pretty soon you and one other guy will have the blog all to yourselves. Certainly that's the best way for you to promote your pizza party? Good riddance gnat.

Those are good picks, Rafael. IMO, the very talented Claiborne might not reach us(I hope he does) and not sure if Hill is the type of receiver this Coach wants in his offensive scheme. For the rest, great picks.

This post about the media is a very good one. Guys like Spike Lee & Jessie Jackson were actually giving his address out on the air & forcing the guy to go into hiding. What a friggin joke & the media outlets allowed it to happen.

The lame stream media wants to report news that is biased, slanted & inaccurate. Look at your current president. The e-verify system confirmed he used a fraudulent SS# from CT on his taxes & he never resided there. You don't hear about it on tv.

All you get is slanted news & views to support Obama & his dummies into destroying this country. Dumb viewers sadly have bought into it & refuse to accept the fact that he & his plans are all failures.

He's laid the ground work for America's death in his first term. He's dug the hole. His next term will be to fill it. Let's hope people wisen up & quick!

Kinda Don Shula ish, I am impressed with the philosophy and direction of the team.

I hope it see it played out on the field.

I cannot wait until the season starts and we can watch some football on the field. It is very exciting to see what will happen. New coach. Will Matt Moore take it to the next level? Will it be Garrard? Will Bush have an even better year? Will D. Thomas become a stud? Clay?

It's going to be entertaining folks. That's what it's about. Chill out.

Then we get to watch Tebow 20 plays a game in New York.

Shapping up to be a cool year for an NFL fan.

Thanks for the different viewpoint Phins78. I hope your right. I have been a fan of Armando and his blog for a really long time and I don't want that to change.

Also,

I love how the guy that hates me and hates my blog kept commenting about me over and over and over again after I left. Does he realize he is giving me MORE publicity on Armando's blog? lol Negative or not, if he keeps talking about me people keep wondering what my blog is like.

Moron trolls, guess I shouldn't expect any less

Shaping. It is shaping up to be a very entertaining year in NFL football?

How will Manning pan out in Denver? Will Luck and RGIII start and be good right away?

Great NFL year coming soon!!!

Ohio,

If you're still around, let me know the blog domain again. The Herald and nobody else can stop us from going to whatever blog we want. It's a free country.

To the Herald, if you let the trolls run free each and every day, and never police it, this is what will happen. You're blog is only as good as the members who frequent it and when they stop coming and comments because of the trolls then you've got a problem.

No idea if these comments will even be allowed to appear but the facts are the facts.

Brothers, I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some football!!!!

Everyone needs to calm down everytime they get fluff comments from the coaches. Good lord, we're not even starting practices yet. We know nothing, and the fluff we hear doesn't mean doodly.
Philbin is the smartest football guy in the room, and hasn't said anything contrary to what he was hired to do.
At least give him a few games before you start ripping into him. If he loses big-time, then I join you all in exorcising him from the team. But let's actually allow him to lose first. He might actually do well... parish the thought.
The Patriots don't have a star receiver either (Welker is a lunch-pail slot guy, so don't go there).
Sorry, but Phlbin hasn't said one thing that makes me think he doesn't know what he's doing. Quite the contrary.
If he screws up our draft... well, I may be less forgiving.

And btw, you fans of drafting a tight-end early rounds ... rumor has it that the media and coaches actually think Fasano is pretty good. So don't hold your breath.

Ohio,

He's also the guy who is cutting up Phins78 on the other blog. If he doesn't like what he reads why does he go there?

Don't worry guy who is afraid to stand up for himself. You just keep changing your name you frightened little boy. I'm leaving just like you wanted, and soon enough others will too. PS, Don't let the door hit ya on your way out big mouth!

PS, you're as dumb as Home if you think only 1 guy is trolling you & him. How naive!

PPS, there is a reason people troll you, you're an arrogant, repetitive fool. There are more like you. Hopefully you're departure will trigger a slew of departures of your kind. The exodus of intelligence!

Craig,
I would hope to heck we draft a safety somewhere. We certainly need a ball-hawking, guided missile beast to patrol back there. I'm hoping for LSU's Taylor somewhere round 4-ish. Dude played as well as Honey-Badger, but got less cred.
Barron will go in the first round, and I'd love to have him, but alas... unless we trade down for extra picks, it won't happen.

No idea why Buff gets a few slots ahead of us in round two. I suppose they slept with somebody.

Craig M

You can just click my name on here "Ohio Dolphan" under my post and it will take you right there.

The site is DolphinTalk.wordpress.com

Craig M. Ohio's is linked in his name. Just click the link and you'll go to his site. Same with my site. It is linked in my name.

I recently posted a Miami only 7 round mock on my site. So when you get a chance check it out.

JS in LA,

I think they pick before us the rest of the draft too. Makes no sense to me. Are the Dolphins being punished because they won the con toss with Carolina in the first round. Strange on. Why is a team with a better record picking ahead of us after the first.

I saw you had listed Taylor for us. That would be a good move. I'm probably in the minority here but I'm not that excited about Jones, Clemons and Culver competing for starting spots. I agree that Bell is basically done (interesting nobody else has snapped him up yet) but I would think Marshall/or Smith should be in the mix there somewhere too.

Phin78,

Your a douche period.

Ohio and Texas,

Cheers guys....thanks for the info. I'm in. Been busy with work the last few days.

Texas, I'll be sure to check out your mock and share a few comments.

I contacted Armando to see if he'd care if I put a link on my blog for this one to get people back to here faster. No answer yet though....

We have never settled for second best around here, We ALWAYS strive to get the best of the best(Like we are),

Craig and JS,

It is funny that we pick ahead of the Bills in the first. We won that tie breaker. And that Buffalo actually finished last in our division due to a tie breaker.

I don't know why they pick ahead of us in rounds 2 and 3 tho. Got to be some quirky draft order rule.

I'm still an Armando fan. He knows that. We've butted heads a couple of times but I still respect the man. I will still visit here (yeah I know the trolls won't be happy about that) but it's also nice to be able to talk Dolphin football without the constant 'noise'.

LIke WE are.

Same here Craig.....I will stay a regular

I know my troll on here is very happy to here that

The same idiots that liked Cameron ....like Philbin.

Who has contributed less to this blog, oscar or aloco?

armando ur an idiot!

jeff ireland
Steve Ross
Coach Philibin

equal the three stooges

The Dolphins suck I'm ready for some baseball.

Craig M,

Trolls are Trolls. Who cares if their happy???

If it weren't for them another blog wouldn't be necessary.

Ohio,

I've thrown a couple of comments up there on your blog. Nothing terribly exciting, I'm afraid.

Some people like being the fish that hitches on to the shark or the bird that rides on the elephant or the bug that buzzes around the wildabeasts ass

Dolfan Rick,

Good point.

Hey, WTF? I smell an ugly double standard here. That dipshyt, Home Depot, can come ruin this blog and promote WQAM and so & so's pizza with every post, but a fin fan can't mention his blog?

I think Armando needs to personally call each of his bloggers with an explanation....

Well Craig M, there's nothing too terrible exciting going on right now.

The draft needs to get here.

Isn't that the case with all your posts?

Haha that's good stuff Blog Fodder

Phins78 Ohio Craig M

I give Armando a lot of credit for telling it straight and not being a butt kissser to the team...... like Omar on the SS.

There are 2 moves that I, to this day still do not like that were made after Parcells and Co. came into Miami. Getting rid of Ginn and Satele. Should have kept both of those guys.

This is absolutely embarrassing. Why does every fan think that they know how to run a team? For those who want Jeff Ireland fired, have you ever been the General Manager of a professional sports team? Go ahead and change teams that you want to cheer for but don't come running back to the Dolphins when they become one of the elite teams in the AFC and NFL again. If you can't support the Dolphins when they are struggling you then you shouldn't be able to cheer for them when they are winning. There is no room for "fair weather fans" in the National Football League.

With Ohio, Professor Lou and Myself having our own sites we should at least have some sort of draft blog/forum during the draft.

My current moc I have up is Miami only and 7 rounds. I plan on doing different scenarios and should have another up at the end of the weekend.

If you like to check it out, here is the url.
www.nfldraftfan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=16

Wow I just can't wait to read a bloggers mock draft.

Its no fun watching a team losr every year. Be a good consumer and dont support this pathetic on the field product.

"....My position, when I watched the tape, was our offensive line needs to get better if our quarterback position is going to play better. That's going to be a priority.”

### So has Miami found its five starting offensive linemen? “Not at all. Hopefully we can provide a little more competition.” (Jake Long, Mike Pouncey and Richie Incognito are obviously set as starters."

This is from Barry Jackson's excerpts from Philbin. For some reason Mando usually leaves out some good stuff.

If the O-line is a PRIORITY which (Duh???) has to be they why they f#ck did they sign Hicks who is no longer a legitimate starter & is 33 years old. He played in in 9 games last year & started 3 for Cleveland??? This is EXACTLY what drives me nuts about this team. Why waste a cent on another backup T/G when we don't have a starting RG or RT???

We had Eric Winston in for a visit so if this is such a PRIORITY why weren't we willing to spend $6 Million a year to sign one of the best RT's in football who hasn't missed a start in 5 years like KC was??? Murtha is an unknown commodity & Philbin said as much later in his Q&A. I just don't get it.....So we're going to draft a starting RT, a starting RG, a starting OLB, & a starting WR with 8 picks???? Not going to happen in this lifetime.

If we, the fans and commentators (U for xample) would spend more time thinking of different ways that the Fins can improve instead of tearing them down and denigrating those who are try to make the Dolphins a winner, we all would be better off.

Guys we trolls must stand together. We make this blog interesting, if it wasn't for us this blog would be a big fat orgy. I.E.

Craig M, Your so right, Can I hold your jock

Ohio Dolfan: Of course Craig, love ya Bro

Phins78, I like for DC Dolfan to plunge my a**

DC, I would love too Phins78 :)

Walter Football has Cleveland picking Tannehill at #4. Personally I don't buy their desire there since they also have a pick later in the first, but maybe they think we'll grab him at #8 if not. Maybe that IS the point of over-hyping that kid. Would be a coup if so. But I don't think the FO is that smart.

Anyone have inside info on Cleveland's desires on Tanny?
Ohio? Wanna weigh in?

Time to accept the fact that only a quarter of the teams in the league are well-managed. These teams compete every year. The rest of the teams just flounder around and hope to stay healthy enough, long enough, to back into the playoffs.

Right now, today, I believe the fins are trying to become one of those teams in the top 25 percentile.

Fishful thinking? Perhaps...

SERIOUS QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS and I don't pretend to know the answer.

If Parcells bailed on us because he was old/tired ready to hang it up, why is he now going to be the head coach, on the freakin' field, of the Saints, who recently won a super bowl?

What about our organization is so stinky that Parcells bailed after 2 years?

LETS MOCK THIS DRAFT:

Philip Merling

Pat White

Chad RoboHenne

3 picks for D Thomas!

John Jerry

Patrick Turner

Koa Misi

Shawn Murphy

A.J Edds

Brian Hartline

LMAO!

All you Philbin lovers need to read Armando article again and again. You will realize that Joey is in over his head. He dodges questions. Joey has never called a single play in his whole career. Never made a personnel decision. Nothing. His inexperience is dangerous, and the fact that Stevie Ross gave him a job is disgusting. You guys think you're mad about Manning and Flynn?? Just wait until we finish 3-13 and try to remember the Voice of Reason here who saw it coming.

I like Philbin as a head coach and how he handles himself. But the owners talk about transparency, and it seems rightly so that Philbin does not want to be transaparent strategically. Always seems like reverse negatives exist with this team... Hopefully this time it becomes a sure fire positive.

Thanks Home aka Troll. Now, go back & sit under your bridge.

Timmy the Jets fan,

Pacells has bailed on plenty others.

Just ask the Bucs who he "left at the altar" as then owner Hugh Culverhouse put it.

Armando:

Normally I tend to agree with most of your comments but it's clear you're refusing to accept the fact Philbin's WCO derivation needs another style of receiver, different of what Brandon Marshall is.

BM is a beast, a go-to receiver one that can beat any CB with superior physical abilities more than efficient route skills. BM allows a balanced offense to fake a running play and then throw deep into his zone and gain several yards. This offense typically use 5-7 steps to throw the ball.

But BM isn't fitted to use different routes and being able to catch the football anywhere in his route.

WCO is a system with speedy receivers that rarely drop passes, TE capable of blocking and catching, RB with good hands and an OL focused on pass protection.

So Philbin requires different players, not a talented WR who drops easy passes at every game.
