The Dolphins quarterback situation continues to convulse and now what seemed like a almost-certain move by Alex Smith back to San Francisco is not quite so certain if one believes people close to Smith.
In this yes-no-yes-no-yes-no offseason for Smith, he is telling sources that he would actually strongly consider playing for the Dolphins "under the right circumstances." This after sources close to Smith earlier said the quarterback would be going back to San Francisco if Peyton Manning didn't pick San Francisco.
To make the point that Smith is serious, I'm told agent Tom Condon has been in talks with the Dolphins today.
So where does that leave us?
Honesty here: I have no idea.
I do not know if the Smith source is serious about Smith being serious about Miami. I do not know if the Smith source is using the media, including me, to leverage a better contract for Smith by saying he's serious about the Dolphins and all the time putting pressure on the 49'ers.
The fact is if the Dolphins believe they have a chance at Smith, they may make their offer to Smith one that could push the 49'ers to increase their reported three-year, $24 million contract. That would serve as leverage for Smith. But it is also a fact Smith could be dealing earnestly with Miami because apparently he had a very good visit with Miami on Sunday. And given that, he might just want a better deal from Miami for the purpose of signing that deal.
Only he really knows for sure.
The Dolphins, of course, can bust through this smokescreen if this wish. All they seemingly have to do to see Smith's seriousness is offer him a better deal than the 49'ers offered and tell him the deal will be on the table for a short period of time and see what he says. If he signs, he was serious. If he takes the offer back to Frisco, he's a fraud.
Of course, this is assuming the Dolphins are serious about Smith to the tune of at least $8 million per year. (I would not pay that but I'm not Miami's general manager.)
It's a game folks. It's called chess.
And, by the way, the media is a pawn.

I believe most football fans have a personal issue with Tim Tebow.I'm not religious. And would prefer he didn't kneel as to pray.I view is as calling attention to one's self.I do see him sacrificing everything to win.He plays win an intensity that We have lack for YEARS.So,Yes most football fans have some unresolved issues that Tim Tebow provokes.

Cosmodo,
Plus a reach around too!!!
Posted by: JOE PHILBIN CLIPBOARD | March 19, 2012 at 06:42 PM
Now its obvious to me what should be done here, stick with Moore this year Alex Smith had 1 good year and does not warrant the money they are talking about. DO NOT DRAFT A QB WITH #8 PICK wait till next year, we need cap space now for other positions and we are going to be 1 of the 5 worst teams in the league next year, draft a QB next year if you must. Face it folks we are in a REBUILING status now, get both lines shored up and help in the d-backfield. If blackmon drops to 8 take him, otherwise get the best pass rusher on the board.

Wrong.....my issue with Tebow is a 46% completion rating and a 72.9 QB rating. My issue with Tebow is having to sit through Bronco games watching 3 and outs over and over and over and over....until the end of the game when Tebow can put Pratter in position to boot 60 yarders for the win. My issue with Tebow is that he constantly puts his defense in the compromising position of needing to hold opponents to 13 points or less.
Interesting that a few Bronco players are sounding off and very pleased with this turn of events.

Tebow will hold a clipboard the rest of his life. Only the Jags will trade for him. If they do, I feel bad for Henne. To walk into that mess!!

Smith will return to the 49ers, he is not stupid I would think. No one wants to play in Miami for these idiots Ross and Ireland. Seriously, what the fans need to do is boycott this team by not purchasing tickets or anything with a Dolphins logo. Lets make Ross sell this team. He's a cancer to the franchise!

Why stay up and here waiting for the news that the Dolphins may or may not get Smith or taboo or Ronald McDonald, who gives a rats butt anyway.
Tomorrow when I wake up and it will be the same old same old and if we got a QB I will be informed by ERSPN Mike and Mike.

To paraphrase a popular song, "Sometimes we thank God for our unanswered prays".
The day will come when Ireland (and I don't like him either) will have a major part of his credit owed to the FA's he let get away.
Use the QB,s we have now and complete the team in the draft. We shouldn't tank it like the Colts but perhaps we can stockpile next years picks to be within striking distance of one of the top two QB prospects.
Give our new coach some slack and let our competition take out the league's garbage.

Get TEBOW- fill the seats- lose 16 games- and draft a qb- moore will fill in after the first six losses and lose the other 10 and asked to be traded- bring back ted ginn- maybe he can play qb- or maybe marshal would come back and play qb- maybe ireland would like to give it a try- i think that is pretty good thinking at least its better than what the fo is doing! what a FU!!!

Posted by: Dolphin 77 | March 19, 2012 at 07:23 PM
ONE single signing, can validate jeff ireland. one single signing can show the football world that there is cognitivity in miami's front office, one single move can give miami fans the same hope that the payton manning concept brought(beating tom brady and winning the division). one single move can give the dolphins a true gunslinger and justify playoff hopes. one single move can turn this upsidedown offseason into one of excitement and direction. it would behoove miami to spend THIS years #3 pick and NEXT years #2 pick in a trade that would bring someone who bilicheat projects to be good enough to replace TOM BRADY to miami ** RYAN MALLET ** when you conclude that the #3 pick would have been spent on him last year anyway(as per new england) then we are only giving up next years #2. this move is 100% justifyable, who better to challange brady? could even go down in history as one of miami's best moves, the one that turned the tide. really, what are the other options... answer: none that even compare.
would we really prefer to hang on to that pick only to use on another daniel thomas, yatil green, kareem abdul jabar, or that safety we drafted in the first rounbd that we just gave away last year.... COME ON,.. do something intelligent with what little we have to work with.

Clipboard they should have done it 2 weeks ago, you are right. They had to know he was a cap casualty and weren't going to keep him.
Posted by: kyphinfan | March 19, 2012 at 07:30 PM
Cutting Bell means something. I had a guess that the Dolphins if they were to sign Smith they`d be over the rule of 51 players which deals with the cap in the offseason. Cutting Bell saves 4.35 mill against the cap. I`d say a QB deal is in the works.

Actually his release clears $4.3 million in base salary off the books, and only saves $2.8 under the cap. And why would Smith want to come to Miami when he can compete for a SB in SF.

WOULDN'T BE SUPRISE IF DANSBY NEXT!HEY COACH PHILBIN JUST BECAUSE ALEX SMITH LOOKS LIKE AARON RODGERS DOESN'T MEAN HE CAN PLAY LIKE RODGERS!START OVER!

Just my opinion but i'd rather stay with Moore and draft a qb than sign Smith.
Posted by: kyphinfan | March 19, 2012 at 07:36 PM
It seems like everyone in our division has gotten a lot better in free agency this year... Still waiting on our splash...
Posted by: B33RCA53 | March 19, 2012 at 07:37 PM
I don't think so Playmakers. His base salary is 4.35 and his prorated bonuses add 1.85 to total a 6.2 million cap hit. Releasing him should give us 4.35 in relief and add 1.85 to our huge dead money pool.

Guys,
I'm not gonna pretend like i know anything regarding QB's in this years draft class but i wanna know why Kellen Moore hasn't been mentioned alot?
His stats for Boise State are outstanding and just wanna know if anyone can tell me why he only has a 6-7 round draft grade
Posted by: Mark | March 19, 2012 at 07:38 PM
we were never going to sign any big name free agents, not enough money. Build through the draft is the only way to go

I Guess Ross/Ireland are trying to save money, But For what? Anyone see who the Cowboys are being let go is one area to look at.
Posted by: FP4FGs. | March 19, 2012 at 07:42 PM
You draft Blackmon or Floyd and a good Ol person and this team is better than last year.
We only lost Henne and Marshall. I personally think Gerrard might be this years Pennington at least he is a cheaper less risky back up.
I really dont think the sky is falling. The press just needs something to talk about and unfortunately we are the whipping board. Why isn't Tennessee getting the Ireland treatment. They offered Manning a life time deal along with having the State Legislature right a decree. Come on guys Tennessee looks way more desperate than we do. And if Manning goes down Denver is going to be in bad shap also.
And what about poor old San Fran they did not get their guy and probably are going to have to pay the man they dont want more just to buy them time.
Come on guys. I really dont like our front office, but their are a whole bunch of front offices running around doing nothing.
Ireland probably made the D Better. If Sherman can put a good offensive game plan together we have the players.
Now if we dont get a top notch receiver and o-lineman in the draft all bets are off. But really you guys had to figure that this was going to be another 3 year process. Sad, but that is where it stands, but with a little luck and we might get into the wild card chase. We lost like five games by a combined 12 points or something like that. So The sky isn't falling just quite cloudy.
And really if you have been raised on Dolphin Football can you really jump ship. Even if you dont watch you are going to look at the box score. So raise all the crap you want Philbin has to be given a shot.
Go Dolphins!!Standing Tough Since 1971!!
Posted by: shula71 | March 19, 2012 at 07:43 PM
I apologize. The revised report is that cutting Bell will save the Dolphins $4 Million in cap space.
