Hold that thought ... Smith source now says QB serious

The Dolphins quarterback situation continues to convulse and now what seemed like a almost-certain move by Alex Smith back to San Francisco is not quite so certain if one believes people close to Smith.

In this yes-no-yes-no-yes-no offseason for Smith, he is telling sources that he would actually strongly consider playing for the Dolphins "under the right circumstances." This after sources close to Smith earlier said the quarterback would be going back to San Francisco if Peyton Manning didn't pick San Francisco.

To make the point that Smith is serious, I'm told agent Tom Condon has been in talks with the Dolphins today.

So where does that leave us?

Honesty here: I have no idea.

I do not know if the Smith source is serious about Smith being serious about Miami. I do not know if the Smith source is using the media, including me, to leverage a better contract for Smith by saying he's serious about the Dolphins and all the time putting pressure on the 49'ers.

The fact is if the Dolphins believe they have a chance at Smith, they may make their offer to Smith one that could push the 49'ers to increase their reported three-year, $24 million contract. That would serve as leverage for Smith. But it is also a fact Smith could be dealing earnestly with Miami because apparently he had a very good visit with Miami on Sunday. And given that, he might just want a better deal from Miami for the purpose of signing that deal.

Only he really knows for sure.

The Dolphins, of course, can bust through this smokescreen if this wish. All they seemingly have to do to see Smith's seriousness is offer him a better deal than the 49'ers offered and tell him the deal will be on the table for a short period of time and see what he says. If he signs, he was serious. If he takes the offer back to Frisco, he's a fraud.

Of course, this is assuming the Dolphins are serious about Smith to the tune of at least $8 million per year. (I would not pay that but I'm not Miami's general manager.)

It's a game folks. It's called chess.

And, by the way, the media is a pawn.

I hate this team so much, I am a life long fan and I feel like I have been abused for the last time. Stephen Ross needs to go back to New York and stay out of football, he is in way over his head, and he might as well take a dump on every piece of dolphins history. On second thought I hope he keeps running the team, because at this rate it will go under and I will finally be relieved that I never have to root for this team ever again.

Kellen Moore is too tiny for the NFL. That is why he has a late round grade. He will end up in an ambulance in the NFL.

Mark I don't know much about him, but I think that being 6'0" is the biggest knock against him. I looked up his stats and you're right they are outstanding and a 73% completion 142-28 td-int career.

I agree with Ryan Clark. Haha Dolphins Suck... And it's Ireland's fault... And don't bring in Tebow

Bell will go to the Pats....

None needed, to answer your other query. Smith would come for two or three reasons. The first being money, an extra million would be good incentive, the second being money as you Floridians pay no state income tax. The last being spite. If he feels disrespected he just might say Foo YU.

"I do not know if the Smith source is serious about Smith being serious about Miami. I do not know if the Smith source is using the media, including me, to leverage a better contract for Smith by saying he's serious about the Dolphins and all the time putting pressure on the 49'ers."

Come on already, of course he's using the Dolphins, doesn't everyone? Who in the hell really believes Smith will choose a team that finished with 6 wins last year, fired their coach, and got rid of their best WR OVER going back to a team that went to the NFC championship? Anyone, hands? Come on,,,,ppfffftttttttt. Please draft Weeden or Tannehill, in that order and get a WR in the 2nd. That is the smartest way to go now.

That's it, we've officially surpassed the Jets fans as the dumbest fans in the NFL. How many times is someone going to write a post chastising coach Philbin for signing and not signing players? HE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SIGNING PLAYERS YOU STUPID IDIOTS! lol

I have a horrible feeling that we will trade Jake Long next. Should I say more like a nightmare. Nothing is surprising now. If they are going to rebuild I think they commit fully to it! Just get rid of the older players for picks and start over. Stop giving us hope of a win now attitude

Ireland is secretly a Jets fan... Saw him riding around in his suv with a GO JETS!!!!! bumper sticker the other day.

ArmandoSalguero Another time Herald asked Ireland re: cutting Bell: "That's the 1 piece that is one of our highest competitors so a piece we're keeping."

How much more are we supposed to take????!!!!

The only way we get a good quarterback is if Ireland gets down on his knee's....kinda like he does Ross.

More changes to come.
Re-structure and possible extension for Long and Bush.
Extension for Wake.
Possible re-structure and maybe extension for Dansby.
Not done yet. Other possible moves coming.
Look for fins, if they do not sign Smith, to trade down in in the 1st and back up into the 1st.
One of the 1st Rd picks will be a QB.

It is just one boneheaded headscratching move after another. Now Yeremiah Bell is gone. Presumably to jack up the offer to Alex Smith in a complete desperation move by the incompetent front office. How much more of this can we take?? Honestly!!!!!

Why cut bell? He will go to pats. This is the beginning of the end. They say the end of the world is coming in 2012...I don,t know about that, but it is looking like the end of the fins.

How about trade up to get Blackmon and Weeden

Phins78, been blowing way too much hot air bud. Frivolous. Take a breath, take a break, and post when you actually have something to say.

the only logical explanation is that Ireland knows he is going to get fired so he has decided to scuttle the ship...

Yerimiah Bell is 34 and has been declining for the past two years. He has never been a play maker in the defensive backfield. He was a great leader and really good at the line of scrimmage. Not worth all of that money when we have 6 or 7 guys on the roster that can compete for the spot.Would love to see Wilson win it. He's a ball hawk and a ferocious hitter who plays with a chip on his shoulder. Love that kid man! Not only that but if Marshall can play FS like they say he can take that spot and Clemons or Jones can battle it out with Wilson. Jones was an excellent SS in college, I believe that is his natural position and Bell has been training all of these kids since they've come into the league. Time for one of them to step up his game, that's what draft picks are supposed to do.

Congratulations! We are all back in the Mushroom Barn.
Don't worry, Ireland will come out shortly and tell us he has signed, "?" and the plan was originally to do that from the beginning.
Then we will understand how only great GM's can work totally in the dark!
Excuse me! I have to put some more manure on my mushrooms.

this team has LOT of needs, but none more so then HOPE itself. right now the team, it's players, and fans are hopeless. RYAN MALLET will bring hope, backed-up by a strong arm and a legitimate belief that he can challange brady, by the shear fact that he is seen as brady's replacement and worthy enough for belicheat to have drafted him, he competes against a bar set so high it seems unfair(to be better then his mentor(brady). he will infuse this team with this hope, it's players will believe in him, and he has something to proove, all he needs is ONE successfull outing against brady to back up this hope with condifence, and the team attitude will change. justify the fans desire to buy tickets, give them hope(THIS years #3 pick + NEXT years #2pick)for RYAN MALLET. turn this club from bottom feeder into one with a legitamete shot. and sign MIKE WALLACE to boot.

That's it, we've officially surpassed the Jets fans as the dumbest fans in the NFL. How many times is someone going to write a post chastising coach Philbin for signing and not signing players? HE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SIGNING PLAYERS YOU STUPID IDIOTS! lol

Wrong man were do you get your info from? if you listened to what coach Phinbin said he said " Jeff Irelands job is to look at players then put his info on my desk , then i will decide if that player fits what im looking for " ... Jeff Ireland is just Philbins tool! Ross has givin' Joe almost complete control ... jeff is just a NFL scout with a Title of "GM"

Crazy, crazy. Thanks fins78, that makes some sense. Did not realize bell was that old.

Hey Garcia or whatever your name was yesterday, (clueless?) I just got in here. Have only posted 4 times today.

And I have nothing to say? What was your post to me about? What a great post that was I'm sure everyone enjoyed reading it. Im in here talking about the team and you're in here talking about another poster. Could you be anymore f***ing retarded? Now go change your name again dummy.

Until otherwise reported, Mallet is not available. There is no indication NE wants to trade him. You can't just make an offer and get someone if the team does not want to trade him. Also, even if they did, not likely they would trade him to an AFC rival if they thought anything of Mallet. If they were to trade him to us, that would be a clear sign they think he sucks. So, forget it either way.

I Think The two headed monster Ross/Ireland are members of the Obama adminstration, thats the only thing that makes sense.

Blackmon and Weeden, Massie and Sanu/Streeter would be a grand slam

smith had one good year out of what 6 or 7 years? id radther have matt moore besides miami doesnt want to pay anyone good money(they too cheap) cus of ireland. better off just drafting a qb cus in no way want smith or tebow if he comes available. i predict miami might win 5 or 6 games and be another year or high hopes turned into disapointment again, every year the same anymore for us. cant win if you cant get good players.

Phins78, I guess you were born in 78? Well whatever. Try to read your posts like a blogger who doesn't know you would read them. You blow too much hot air as though you are in love with your writing. Unfortunately, your writing is not that lovable. Post less, say more. You start blabbing away and it comes out like blab.

this is a rebuilding team.clemons, culver, jones wilson & marshall need to step up and be accounted for.some help with the pass rush in the draft would help the db's as well.thanks for always playing your ass off mr.bell.you always brought your lunch pail & your snot knocker to work!joe philbin is a man with charactor.he wants to build through the draft & make this team his.i trust him & based on his hire and the moves ireland made/didn't make in 2011 & 2012 without the EGO around,i say let them have their 2-3 years.we finally got 2 guys(hc & oc) with 21st century football on their minds and favre & rodgers on their resume.we will beat the snot out of the jeff swisher shams in 2012 too.

Agree Crusher our dbs were terrible last year; what was our pass def. somewhere in the 20's?

Jeff I guess we both have opinions about that. Those things you wrote were not facts. Philbin has told Ireland what type of players he needs for positions in the offense, Jeff is the one who decides which player to sign that fits those skill sets. I'm sorry if our understandings are different from what we both read a month or so ago.

The fact of the matter is I don't believe for one second that Ross kept Ireland through all of this to strip his power of being a GM and give it to a first time head coach who already has enough on his plate. If that were the case he could have fired Ireland and let Joe handle GM duties. There are plenty of scouts employed by the team that could take Jeff's role in a heart beat.

So you believe what you want bud, I really couldn't care less.

Kris, your integrity is gone. You are just another wishy washy poster who flips and flops as it suits you with no integrity to your own posts. Be a man, not a mouse, and own up to what you say, once you've been saying it for some time. Kris, YG DB, Odinhole, all the same club, maybe the same blogger?

Phins78 I think Jeff just misconstrued a report after Philbins hire when a reporter asked him how his relationship with Ireland was going to work and he stated something to the effect that Jeff said. But you are absolutely correct that Ireland has final say so and you would hope he wouldn't get someone who didn't fit the system.

Garcia, I give a f**k? Seriously you're giving me lessons on how to write? That's my style man, you don't like it, don't read my posts. Just scroll down and you will see my name is in blue, then skip it. Pretty f***ing easy.

No, I wasn't born in 78, my cousin died from a long fight with cancer in 78, I was 7 years old and close to him. He was a Dolphins fan and the day he died I took them on as my team. Been a fan since 78. Any other questions "Garcia"?

Like Wilson, tough past sometimes you do what you have to do,
he is a hitter his cap# is $476K.
Bell's cap # was $6.2 M.
You may be surprised.

KY is coming to Tampa on April 6

I have never seen such a disaster like this!!!

So you believe what you want bud, I really couldn't care less.

Typical condescending post by someone who ignorantly believes he is superior to others. Idiots and douche bags often think highly of themselves.

Oscar Can....eh...Flip flop alert....

YES....My intergrity is gone....HEAVEN'S TO BETSY....whatever shall I dol....lol....

You give new meaning to the term...."get a life.....

It seems like everyone in our division has gotten a lot better in free agency this year... Still waiting on our splash...

Posted by: B33RCA53 | March 19, 2012 at 07:37 PM

No splash.....this is classic re-build mode. All the signs are there...Dolphins fans are just in denial.

Where does red head sucker live!
We are coming for you!
Better resign and leave our dolphins or you will be hurt!!!!

Which WR has the best shot at blowing up next year? Marlon Moore, Julius Pruitt, or Roberto Wallace?

There are and will be more cuts. Who`s next?

I liked Bell, but was surprised they'd kept him this long.

Good luck, Y.

Garcia, just scrolled back ,,,and back,,,,and back. You haven't posted in here all day under Garcia. That means you changed your name as soon as I came in and just started attacking me?

What's your usual name and why won't you speak to me under that? What are you afraid of? You're a puss*. Plain and simple. Go run and hide little sally, I'm done with you.

Just heard Garrard is a Dolphin.

We started rebuilding when we hired Coach Joe.

kyphinfan, our new dc turned reggie nelson from a bust to a viable player. i beleive jones at ss and clemons-marshall-culver-wilson at fs plus 3 to 4 of the best available de/olb jason t. types in the draft & the d is stout.use the rd 1 pick to get blackmon or floyd & get whoever among cousins, osweiler,or tannehill is there in rd 2

Phins78, touching story. I am in tears. But, you are a condescending a**hole. I say it, the rest see it. Now go wipe yourself for a change.

Typical condescending post by someone who ignorantly believes he is superior to others. Idiots and douche bags often think highly of themselves.

Except for the fact that his post to me, I mean your post probably under a different name, was condescending to begin with. I respect those who respect me, you disrespect me you get the same in return.

Where did you here that Rick?

Ireland must leave!!!!!!!!
Feet first or feet up.

I agree with you on our D Crusher but I have consistently said on several of the blogs over the past week or 2 that I believe we were targeting Tannehill at #8. Some may think it is too high but I don't get into all that, I just know if they want him they should draft him and not care what number because if they try to get cute he may be gone.

I'm not gonna pretend like i know anything regarding QB's in this years draft class but i wanna know why Kellen Moore hasn't been mentioned alot?

His stats for Boise State are outstanding and just wanna know if anyone can tell me why he only has a 6-7 round draft grade

Posted by: Mark | March 19, 2012 at 07:38 PM

Because he is 5'10"/5'11". He lacks prototypical NFL arm strength and, is lackluster overall as an athlete (i.e. no mobility, slow release, etc). His intangibles are off the charts, but his physical game leaves a lot to be desired.

To boot, he plays in the Mountain West Conference (which is my conference here in NM)....the competition is basically a little above high school level. Actually, there's probably some serious high school football teams in Texas and places like that which could probably give most MWC teams a run for their money.

Trade the NO:1 WR? fine but why not plan for a replacement?

Drop Bell? Fine but why 1 week into free agency when the replacements have been acquired by other teams?

Constantly miss out on QBs? Fine but don't chase a QB who is actually worse than our present starter!

If there is a master plan can't someone from the Dolphins give the herald a call and give them a few clues?!?!?

Are we rebuilding just because we didn't get Manning? Fine but someone should say so...

Sun Sentinal. I will be everywhere soon i'm sure.
