« Dolphins QB search now in spin mode | Main | Overpaying Smith worse than missing on Flynn »

Dolphins fail to land Matt Flynn too (he's on to Seattle)

I am learning to stop underestimating the Dolphins' inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

After not getting a franchise QB last year, and not getting a player even they believed would compete for a starting job (Matt Moore was a surprise to them), and not drafting anyone, and pulling out of the Kyle Orton trade, and not getting Peyton Manning, now Miami is not getting Matt Flynn, either.

Flynn has agreed to a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

The Dolphins?

They're visiting with Alex Smith. They have another visit set up tomorrow with David Garrard.

How do you feel about that one?

I am not a big Flynn proponent. I'm not so sure he's going to be that good. I don't mind him going elsewhere. But the Dolphins do need somebody.

I'm sure the Dolphins will eventually portray this as having a plan (yeah, right) and sticking to that plan of not overspending for any player (including a QB). I'm sure they'll eventually get the message out that Flynn was a nice but not great option.

Sorry, but some facts simply get in the way. For example, someone else apparently believes Flynn is worth a good but not great contract. Seattle is paying approximately $8 million per season -- probably less when the actual numbers come in -- and that's not exactly breaking the bank for a starting QB. Even the $10 million signing bonus is modest for a QB. All indications are the Dolphins thought Flynn to be that potential starter but still couldn't pay him that?

Well then, why did the personnel and offensive staff spend nearly 40 hours of total tape time studying this guy, a figure I was told by a source was conservative? Otherwise, why would coach Joe Philbin be calling him throughout the free agency process to make sure Flynn knew he was a major Miami target? Otherwise why did the Dolphins immediately pivot to Flynn once they knew they'd been eliminated from the Manning derby? Otherwise why did they offer the kid a contract?

Something went wrong here. I was told three days ago Flynn was going to be Miami's guy. I was told it would take a significant screw up to fail to get him in a Dolphins uniform because the club believed he could win the starting job and Flynn liked the idea of playing for Philbin.

So what changed?

Obviously something.

Again, Matt Flynn is just a guy to me. He isn't guaranteed of doing anything great anywhere he goes. But the Dolphins continuing to pass on everybody is starting to raise eyebrows. It makes you wonder what's the problem.

Maybe it's Miami's inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

Amazing stupidity, I am sick to my stomach.

I would LOVE to hear what Ireland has to say. Somebody wake this JERK UP!!!

Nice negative spin, guess no other team has looked at qb's or made "bad moves" AZ, KC, Seattle ect.

And I am sure MANY fans plan to not overspend either by not attending any Dolphin Homegames.

We have to be all in on Tannehill. Have to be. And if so then this all makes since, if not what the heck is going on?

Stop buying season tickets...

His contract was only 3 years/26 million with only 10 guarantted...

Not even close to a Kolb type deal...

Blessing in disguise. I'll take Moore over Flynn. Let them draft a QB this year if they like one enough, if not, make the play next draft. No sense in bringing in Flynn, its obvious no GM sees him as a franchise QB, he generated no interest.

What a joke this has become. Plan my ass...They better sign Smith or be happy with Moore...Please no old re-treads...

We don't have the dough, People! Get that into your skulls.

You are missing the point @Miles, your lack of understanding is amazing actually. his point is that the fins can't connect with a QB to save their life.

The fins were supposed to be the fave AGAIN with Flynn, AND with past history between Philbin, I thought this was a lock...

It is all about the money apparently, and the Fins won't pay for the most important piece of the puzzle. They deserve to wallow in mediocrity until they understand otherwise.

Dolphins will now panic and sign Smith or panic and draft Tannehill at #8. Those are the two moves I expect right now.

Im sure the entire NFL has a tummy ache from laughing at the Dolphins so hard and for so long now. Im sure Parcells is even laughing now! LOL

Face reality fans. Moore will be the Dolphin starter this season and let all of this QB frenzy be a learning lesson in trusting this owner and Ireland.

The lesson being that you have been told by the owner Ross as well as THE SCOUT that the dolphins TOP Priority PRIORITY.. TOP PRIORITY is bringing in a STAR, STAR, and Star for how many seasons and press conferences.

CHECK MATE. Accept that Moore is our future. I will have no choice but to stand behind the QB and new HC and give them both a full season to see what they can accomplish. Moore showed us a glimpse BUT my concern is that we have purged the team of a stud WR. That is not going to help the QB unless we bring in a new Stud, play maker by the name of Justin Blackmon.

Im so over this organization, time to move on. No more money to be spent on the fins. If wasnt against the law I would go the stadium and burn everthing with miami dolphins logo on it! Go Lions!

It has to be $$$, Fins keep trying to get these guys on the cheap. This has never been an issue before until Mr. Ross came to town.

maybe are only option is to bring back beck after the great job he did with the redskins.

Hell, if they sign Alex Smith, how in the hell do they sign thier draft picks? Incredible the incompetency around here! LOL

We lost out on a guy that knows this offense like the back of his hand for that price? Unbelievable. And you wonder why the Dolphins have become the laughing stock of the league. I was one of the season ticket holders that wanted to have some confidence in Ross and Ireland. No more however. My club level seats will not be renewed. Take that you incompetent front office.

Good luck Joe in dealing with these knuckleheads. Hope your fate is better than Cam's was.

Brace yourselves for a REALLY UGLY season. This team is bad, really bad. And getting worse. I see 2-14 coming. No QB and nobody to throw it to. NICE offseason guys.

What happened to this Franchise???

The Dolphins have wasted Free Agency this season. Again.

No QB. No WR (and they traded the best they had). No OL help. No TE help. Maybe help at FS. Keeping thier own NT who is not an every down player in a 4-3. No pass rush help so far.

Plus, they are at the cap. They have -zero- playmakers and are at the cap limit? At the same time they are near the bottom of the league in player salaries actually paid out.

The team has huge needs all over the roster. And all this in year 5 of a rebuilding plan.

Time to trade Moore and Jake Long and whoever else has 'value' and start a real rebuild under a new GM.

I had no problem with missing on Manning. They screwed up with Flynn. If Smith, Garrard or M. Moore is the QB next year, it may be time to jump off this train. Ive been a fan since '72, but enough of this.

This team - this organization - has become a f-ing JOKE.

GARBAGE! NUMBER NEED ONE IS A QB

So the owner KEEPS IRELAND instead of getting Fischer

AND IRELAND Pulls . . .

lets see MATT MOORE ?????

and a REACH draft pick MAYBE yeah 1-15 this year if they get lucky, How could you be a fan of this CRAP?

MATT FLYNN MUST REALLY STINK ...AND HIS GF AND DAD HAD US FOOLED!

We have become tragic. I guess now it won't hurt or surprise when we go 6-10, 5-11 or whatever other insignificant record you want to come up with. Can't wait to watch those glistening orange empty seats on NFL ticket again...thats if Directv chooses to even continue carrying Dolphin games. This is the price that i pay for jumping on the bandwagon back in '84...no hope.

I TOLD YOU GUYS THAT THE "BIG SPLASH" ROSS PROMISED WOULD BE A "COMPLETE DROWNING". HAVE SOME OF YOU GOTTEN BACK FROM OZ YET? jUST FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD BABY! LOL

Ok, so how short is your memory Armando Salguero ? Just 3 blog posts ago you go on about how getting Flynn at the RIGHT PRICE is as important as getting him. Obviously, what went wrong with getting him is they didn't agree on a contract. So, they didn't feel comfortable paying him what he wanted to get paid. Seems pretty damn logical. By your standards of course. Yet you still find a way to spin this into the Dolphins "failing to land their guy." Yeah effing right dude. If Flynn was so good, one of the other dozen teams that need a QB would have looked at him, not just Seattle.

Was it the Dolphns inablitlty to sign Flynn or did they just think he was too hyped?

I hope he becomes an all-pro just to prove the Dolphins stupidity. In 2006 Phins had 60,000 season ticket holders. Today they have 30,000. I hope they are looking at 20,000 in 2 years.

WITH THE TALENT NOW ON OFFENSE I SEE REGGIE BUSH GETTING BEAT UP GOOD THIS YEAR!

What happened to this Franchise???

Posted by: Superzoe56 | March 18, 2012 at 05:36 PM

Simple answer. It has been INFECTED with a trojan horse VIRUS named Bill Parcells. He is the one who hired A SCOUT from Dallis and gave him the title of GM.

The VIRUS aka "THE SCOUT" can only be purged by the ROSS. Until that is done expect more and more erratic behavior from the organization.

Smith will be back in SF. Manning is either Denver or Tn . Den has been in #1 spot all along . The rest is negotiating. Simth vs SF both sides are Hedging.Tannegill will be gone beofre #8 Cleveland has also failed to sign any QB. This has become a bad joke. They will be 6-10 or 8-8 with Moore, who is not that bad. BUT!! Fans expect teams especially one that has one of the most expensive ticket a plan to be a SB contender. This team is at one of the highest cap levels of the entire NFL and has a QB making $2M ( Moor) when The Saints, Giants, NE etc spend $20M annually on QB and feild a consistent winner and get RINGS!!!!! What a F ing joke they have become and I defended the bardn yesterday . I was wrong iyt is not offically very tarnished when we loose a QB to the hawks.

I'm definitely baffeled by this one. I really hope we don't get Jacksonville's throw away. The contract Flynn got was very modest for a projected starting qb. I've been very understanding of the so called plan but I'm starting to lose faith in this so called plan.

MATT FLYNN THE NEXT MATT HASSLEBACK..FORMER EX PACKER AND A GUY WHO WAS GONNA BE THE DOLPHINS QB..DEJAVU!

correction, Dallas

This is the year these JERKS decides to tank FOR THE FIRST OVERALL PICK IN THE DRAFT!!!!!

what went wrong? the dolphins either (a) obviously didn't thing flynn was worth the money or (b) miscalculated by bringing in other players to create artificial competition for the purpose of lowering his demands (this is assuming that they are not legitimately interested in alex smith). more to the point, there is at best circumstantial evidence that flynn is better than matt moore, so it probably won't make a difference in the long run (emphasis on probably).

Wow...amazingly bad. There goes ticket sales and a major sense of pride for this team. Get ready to buy up more tickets, Ross. Your wonder boy Ireland just screwed you and us all. I feel sick.

The Browns are going to land Tannehill. And after one failure after another, I'm not holding my breath for Smith. If it's not Smith, I expect Cousin or Wheedon. It'll be too humiliating with Garrard.

Holy hell!

Bring in Orton.

JUST THINK HOW THE PLAYERS CURRENTLY ON THE TEAM ARE FEELING AFTER WATCHING THIS LEVEL OF INCOMPETENCY THIS OFFSEASON. IM SURE THEY ARE JUST RARING TO COME OUT OF THE STARTING GATES THIS SEASON!

IM SURE THE PLAYERS ELIGIBLE FOR FREE AGENCY NEXT YEAR. HAVE ALREADY INSTRUCTED THIER AGENT TO BEGIN NEGOTIATIONS WITH OTHER TEAM ON THE LOW-LOW FOR NEXT YEAR. IF I WERE CURRENT DOLPHINS PLAYER GOING INTO FA NEXT YEAR. THAT'S WHAT I WOULD DO. LOL

Moore is gonna have 6-7 wins this year and then we won't get a chance at Matt Barkley....

hahahahaha

LOL @ NY "G"

Perfect explanation, I couldn't agree more...

I don't even know how to explain how I feel anymore about this team, I mean, I love them, we all do, which is why we care so much, but damn...come on, you are killing me...

And in the 2013 draft the Miami Dolphins select USC QB Matt Barkley. Sorry, must have been a dream.

If the team fails to sign Smith, then next season is over before it begins. We are the Miami Bengals!

You have to know when to nickle and dime players on a contract. Like when you are trying to sign a back-up nose tackle or even a nickle back. But you don't nickle and dime a guy who might be your starting QB. A starting QB can be worth 6 wins on his own.

Looks like the Fins will be in Rebuilding mode for perpetuity ;)

#firestephenross

Pathetic

test,

We only had 6 wins with Marshall as the #1 wr. Now our #2 wr becomes the #1 and teams crowd the line of scrimmage and Bush is lucky to get 500yds rushing this year. That's if he doesnt get hurt first.

So where in the hell do you see 6-7 wins this season? I see 2 wins this season if we're extremely lucky! LOL

For the cap to be so mismanaged, it has to be intentional to 'hide' the cheapness of the owner/GM or they are very inept at building even an average football team.

Moore was 6-6 with lots of fumbles and interceptions and an easy schedule in the games he started. In any case, the 30th ranked O-Line will block for him and one of the worst WR/TE units in the NFL will attempt to catch passes.

After five years of the Parcells/Ireland rebuild....it looks like the Phins are just starting again.

@Mando

Next time you go to church, pray that Ireland gets hit by a bus.

This man is a cancer on this team. No one wants to work for an organization that uses words like "LOCKDOWN."

Ireland was basically a gym teacher before he was a GM.

DON'T WORRY GUYS THIS IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR JEFF IRELAND ..MAYBE NEXT TIME HE'LL KNOW BETTER!

I finally figured out what Miami's plan is. They are going to run the Wildcat 100% of the time, no need for a QB!!!

Smiths balking at $9 million dollars to sign with the Niners. What the hell are we gonna pay him with, "magic beans"?

No Manning, No Flynn, No Winston, No more Brandon Marshall etc... When does this nightmare called Jeff Ireland end?

Wow and the Miami Dolphins want us to attend the annual draft party!

What for? What is the point of the draft party to watch Jeff Ireland trade down and screw up the draft again like he has done the past 3 years?

Another offensive lineman in 2012? Maybe a defensive end rush specialist?

I have zero intention of attending any games this year at least at home I have the option of clicking to another channel.

Look at the bright side, parking will be easy at the stadium.

Ireland and Ross run this team like its Folsom Prison. I mean really, Lock downs and asking folks are their parents pimps and prostitutes is like being in prison.

JEFF IRELAND IS SO OUT OF TOUCH WITH PRO FOOTBALL ITS SICKENING!

We are definitely the laughing stock of the NFL. I am in N.Fl and I though J-ville Jags were bad...are you kidding me ???? And if they think Garrard is the answer I had 6+ years with him at the helm...he is the most inaccurate passer of all time...We just suck..
Also, we can't afford A.Smith...just brought him in to make Flynn shake is his cleats...,well, he did all right. Although, the Seahawks did really overpay him....

Im happy with this actually. Time to invest in a possible franchise qb from the draft. Glad

Miss me yet?????
