« Dolphins QB search now in spin mode | Main | Overpaying Smith worse than missing on Flynn »

Dolphins fail to land Matt Flynn too (he's on to Seattle)

I am learning to stop underestimating the Dolphins' inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

After not getting a franchise QB last year, and not getting a player even they believed would compete for a starting job (Matt Moore was a surprise to them), and not drafting anyone, and pulling out of the Kyle Orton trade, and not getting Peyton Manning, now Miami is not getting Matt Flynn, either.

Flynn has agreed to a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

The Dolphins?

They're visiting with Alex Smith. They have another visit set up tomorrow with David Garrard.

How do you feel about that one?

I am not a big Flynn proponent. I'm not so sure he's going to be that good. I don't mind him going elsewhere. But the Dolphins do need somebody.

I'm sure the Dolphins will eventually portray this as having a plan (yeah, right) and sticking to that plan of not overspending for any player (including a QB). I'm sure they'll eventually get the message out that Flynn was a nice but not great option.

Sorry, but some facts simply get in the way. For example, someone else apparently believes Flynn is worth a good but not great contract. Seattle is paying approximately $8 million per season -- probably less when the actual numbers come in -- and that's not exactly breaking the bank for a starting QB. Even the $10 million signing bonus is modest for a QB. All indications are the Dolphins thought Flynn to be that potential starter but still couldn't pay him that?

Well then, why did the personnel and offensive staff spend nearly 40 hours of total tape time studying this guy, a figure I was told by a source was conservative? Otherwise, why would coach Joe Philbin be calling him throughout the free agency process to make sure Flynn knew he was a major Miami target? Otherwise why did the Dolphins immediately pivot to Flynn once they knew they'd been eliminated from the Manning derby? Otherwise why did they offer the kid a contract?

Something went wrong here. I was told three days ago Flynn was going to be Miami's guy. I was told it would take a significant screw up to fail to get him in a Dolphins uniform because the club believed he could win the starting job and Flynn liked the idea of playing for Philbin.

So what changed?

Obviously something.

Again, Matt Flynn is just a guy to me. He isn't guaranteed of doing anything great anywhere he goes. But the Dolphins continuing to pass on everybody is starting to raise eyebrows. It makes you wonder what's the problem.

Maybe it's Miami's inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

I've been thinking a lot about the bottle service at Club Liv...If in fact we can sign up some of these exotic European vodkas, then I think we have a chance to attract some high caliber clients to the establishment, therefore increasing the brand of Club Liv. I think all our years of suffering with having the worst Club Liv in all of the NFL might soon be over, have hope guys!

If they felt that strongly about Flynn he would have been their first choice, big deal they didn't overpay for him move on, give Moore a chance to learn under Philbin, I think the guy did a great job for a new offense and no off season last year........

Or a bag over their head so they wont be seen!!!

Stop the bleeding! Dolphins shutout again, states the NFL network while the crawler informs me Miami is bringing in David Gerrard, wtf? If we can't get our top choices let's just rebuild with Moore, better than all this embarrassment. We keep striking out and trying to justify it after the fact. Get a freaking plan and nail it! Rebuild, fine, I'm just sick of not knowing what I'm rooting for. Peyton and the super bowl, or trading Marshall, stockpiling picks and rebuilding? We don't seem to have a plan or a directionand our 6-10, 7-9 records in the past or in the future prove it. Let's be bad and start fresh, or let's try to dominate now. And oh, ireland has got to go, is there something that's opposite of the Midas touch? Because he has it. The Ireland touch.

Eddie, face it, they suck as a front office. And if you think Moore is the QB of the future then you are sadly misinformed.

Born that are striking out. It's intentional. Ross will not spend. It is now very obvious.

Miss me yet???

Jeff Ireland is what went wrong

Mando wrote: The positive spin: The Dolphins know no one left on the free agency market is a franchise quarterback. They believe Flynn might be a good player and are willing to pay him as such to compete with Matt Moore. But the contract offer they made Flynn's agent safeguards the team against Matt Flynn being a tremendous bust and playing like the seventh-round draft pick he was years ago. This is protecting oneself for the good of the franchise. So the Dolphins, so far unable to get Flynn to buy into the idea of coming to Miami and competing for a starting job, are kicking the tires on practically anyone else on the market. They are doing due diligence. They have a set price they're willing to pay and they're sticking by their convictions. They'll get somebody. But they'll not overpay for anybody.

So what is it man??? Seems like you play both sides of the fence "dont overpay Miami" 1 article later...you screwed this up Miami...lets skin the cat after the draft...

David Garrard will bring us Matt Barkley.

Borninduhe.....yes...the opposite of the Midas touch is calle the bull chip touch....everything they touch turns to bull chip

It’s funny….just a year ago the Phin’s didn’t think they needed a franchise QB and totally passed on a potential (Ryan Mallett). They could have got him for a song and instead let the Patriot’s get his value.

Personally, I watched all of Mallet’s games at Arkansas. I flat out know he is better than any of these scrubs they are bringing in. So what if he has a friggin accent ! The man can zing it on a rope !!!

But this year Ross/Ireland says….OMG….we gotta get a QB !!! Morons. I completely expect the 2 clowns to make another bonehead decision that will set the franchise back another decade.

Just you watch…..its actually becoming comical. the Marino years seem like 50 years ago.

Alex Smith is going to want more $ than Flynn got(perhaps deservingly so). We only have 4 mill/yr to give him. That's it.

So happy right now!

This organization has become a joke, I have been a fan now for almost 30 years and it just makes you sick. Never thought we would have to go threw another 1-15 but 2012 is looking that way. Our Ownership and management have to be the worst in the NFL. How do you make money with no star players or bring people into a stadium when this team will be lucky to win 2 games. The Dolphins defense is going to have a long year ahead of them cause they are going to need to put up zeros on the board for this team to have any chance of winning some games. Good Luck Joe Philbin you seem like a good guy, but you should have stayed in Green Bay at least you had a shot of winning some more Superbowls, cause it ain't happening in Miami. I am an out of town fan but I really hope the fans in Miami boycot home games so maybe are owner can finally realize that you need to spend money to make money.

Anyone still think this team isn't a collossal failure? Or Jeff Ireland is a good GM building a "winner"? The phins might be paying Alex Smith more than they would have payed Matt Flynn. WOW!

So why are the Dolphins having a hard time luring free agents to South Beach? Steelers safety Ryan Clark has a theory.

After Clark congratulated quarterback Matt Flynn on joining the Seahawks via Twitter, one of Clark’s followers writes that “NO ONE wants to go to the Dolphins!” Clark responds by saying, “No one! To believe I almost went there but it was easy decision not to.”

Clark was referring to his decision in 2010 to stay with the Steelers in lieu of joining the Dolphins.

So what’s the issue? Clark later says, “It’s my honest opinion. Not a good guy making decisions.”

Here’s referring, presumably, to G.M. Jeff Ireland.

Clark didn’t specifically say whether other players share his opinion, but it’s implied in the “No one!” tweet.

If it’s true, the Dolphins need to find a way to fix the situation. If it’s not true, the Dolphins need to find a way to reverse a false perception.

I am fukkin stunned. The incompetence of the front office is just beyond belivable. Ireland has got to the worst GM in the NFL. What has Ireland got on Ross that he keeps his job? Now what?

Maybe Flynn didnt want to play without a alpha receiver, oh wait, we had one we traded away for two 3rd round picks!!!

This coming from a guy who was all cuddly with Irelands nuts the last 2 years. Calling other fans down on Ireland babies & fake fans.

What made you wake up? Ireland don't smell too good now does he? The bad news in all this is apparently you finally woke up from your coma & we all have to listen to you babble.

Get a life doucher!

..I'm not prepared to say "This will never happen" But think about for a second..Unless Peyton chooses San Fran. Why in the World would Alex Smith choose to come here? Because his feelings are hurt? Because we may pay him a little bit more..In both cases..RIGHT!!!!

The positives outweigh the negatives in San Fran over Miami in every aspect..Lets review..Skill position players...Check SF
Offensive line...Check SF
Front office..Check SF
Defense...Check SF
Special Teams...Check SF
Chance to win now...Check SF

Why in the world would Smith even entertain coming here? I get it that if Manning enters the picture, that Smith needs a job..But if Manning chooses Tennessee...Forget it

Also I posted this yesterday..Smith is the ultimate system qb. He was hidden in the offense last year. The Niner team was bread to run the ball, kick field goals
Refuse to turn the ball over..Play stout Defense.

I would be shocked if Smith had any success in year 1 of a pass first offense..Seriously. If it comes down to this..Trade out opf the first round. Stay with Matt Moore. take or licks..Be loaded for bear with multiple first rounders next year. The odds of this team being competitive this year look bad right now.

I am liing Ireland now!

I'm still not convinced that is all on Ireland. Ross has meddled in Football matters several times and if he don't want to give Ireland the dough to sign a certain Player, then there's nothing anybody can do about it.

this is the most hiddeously disgusting series of events the dolphins have EVER displayed. this is absolutely horrifying. there are just no words to accurately describe how terrible this front office is. the dolphins are DONE. go phins!

I been a fan over 35 years. No quarterback and no receiver. I am ashamed and embarrased as a dolphin fan. This once proud organization has become a laughing stock. Nobody wants to come here and play for this team. It starts fron the top. I have no faith in the owner and the general manager. Another 2-14 season and alot of empty seats mr ross. Dolphin fan for life

Darryl Dunphy,

Exactly about Smith! He was Chad Henne last year for the Niners without all of the picks. Only 17 td and 3100 yds passing.

Those are Henne like seasonal number except Henne throws 20 picks and Smith only threw 4.

And this surprises some of you?? Not me, because some defended them.."them" being Ross and Ireland... These guys rte jokes! Laughingstock of the nfl... I'm done, I'm so angry right now. Ross and Ireland need to be ousted immediately. Where's all that hope and positives guys...it's gine

Dolphan for life,

I am with ya on the Ryan Mallet bandwagon...I don't think I could have debated/argued any harder with the Pro-Henne supporters on this blog prior to last years draft.

Now Henne is sent packing after 4 chronological years of fruitless labor. Somehow, he still has some Fin fans in his corner...must be related?

I didn't think Manning would end up choosing Miami so that is no surprise. With all the dots seemingly auto connected I thought Flynn would be a shoe in...not the case at all.

Now it's Alex Smith's turn...he will ask for a lot, the Fins will bargain with him so we shall see. I think A. Smith secretly wants Manning to go somewhere besides SF so he can go back saying he was a commodity and almost left. "IF" Manning chooses SF then A. Smith would be very close to being desperate to land a home.

I wouldn't mind Smith and Moore in a camp dogfight...at least Smith is coming off his best season and is still a young 1st overall pick with upside.

Barclay could be a target for down the road. With all this QB movement I would have to think some won't be in any QB derby in next years draft or so we hope.

As we go along here we are taking samples of the posts and analyzing them. The main purpose is to free Internet from scavengers and profiteers.

Dang they did not want Flynn, too much money and moore is better, get over it!!!!

..I can't give Ireland credit for this..Like he is sgenius for passing on Flynn..Passing on Flynn isn't the point. It is the inability to land the desired pieces..They stay away like the Phins have herpes on the lips.. People can tell themselves Flynn wasn't really in the plans because of this or that. I think that is hooey.. something is going on with the orginization that is keeping these players and coaches away...

I will try and remain positive, as hard as it is when you look at the big glazed doughnut the team keeps being fed.

People scoffed at it the last 2 years. But because of 2 incidents, big name coaches & players will not step foot in Miami as long as Ireland/Ross are in control.

When Ross tried to hire Harbaugh before Sporano was fired & the Ireland prostitute incident. Dansby & Marshall were already acquired. Those were the LAST 2 players with major recognition to come here. Bush was traded for because he would not have signed here on his own.

NFL players, coaches, EVERYONE remember. If you need answers as to why no one comes here, start with those 2. Those who deny it are braindead! when you act classless, you get treated like it.

You will be able to get more people into Joe robbie sponsoring a Easter egg hunt than during home games in 2012.

No stigma with us, DD, we just don't have what it take$.

you are the epitome of stupid if you believe that!

Love where we are at

loco u r a stooge and a stupid idiot... spell better loser

Pretty soon, posters will only be allowed one name per URL's(even if they change them, we have the physical addresses). Have to protect the integrity of the Collective.

Actually Ross/Ireland did me a great big favor this offseason. I no longer have to go into a season "hoping" we'll have a good team.

It now already been confirmed the Miami dolphins are terrible from top to bottom.

oscar shut up... This is the way we will win. Flynn was not the answer, moore is beter. I trust philbin. 3 more years.

If the reports are true and we are close to sign FA Alex Smith at the tune of $8 million a year, the Dolphins would have one of the worst cap situations in the entire NFL and still no bonafide stars in their roster other than all of the sudden oft-injured Jake Long who we will not be able to sign next year anyway.

The plan? There was none apparently, this despite being the team at 0-7 along with the Colts with the most time to plan for the offseason. It simple does not add up, where does Smith fit into any kind of plan? I mean I thought we were a rebuilding team by now and have a decent QB in Moore to do the job required to do the bare minimum. Bringing Smith with that contract makes zero sense. Heck nothing these clowns do make sense. Pissed beyond belief, sell the team, we do not want you here.

Gotta wonder why FA's even talk to these jerks.

This franchise lacks any vision, leadership, and the ability to think. Apparently Jeff Oldman is prepping the fins to play the 1968 NFL season, by drafting and signing tackles and 10 running backs. To further exasperate things he is asking for our trust. Let me respond to that by extending politely both my middle fingers. The guy doesn't deserve this job. As for Ross I wish he would move the team out of Florida and rename it, because at this point I would prefer an expansion team over the non sense the so called Miami Dolphins have become. I hope fans do not go to the game and don't renew season tickets, this front office has not earned a dime from dolphin nation.

..YG.. I don't know what people believe we would get should we go with Smith? You get it.. San Francisco ran the ball, Smith threw it to Vernon Davis, they got to the redzone got conservative(to their credit, they could play this style because the defense was so good..We have seen first hand what happens when the unit is middle of the pack)and kicked field goals..

Harbuagh was genius with Smith..He brought him along slowly. Culminating in Smiths Career day V the Saints.. Perhaps if Smith stays in the Harbaugh system he will earn the trust to throw it more..as it goes. They are going to run it(with Smith)

So how exactly does AS fit here?? He doesn't. Like you said he is Chad Freekin Henne..especially when he has to throw it, and the defense knows it. The Niners had the elemant of suprise going for them..I'm not sure if Smith had 400 attempts last year...Now we are going to ask him to throw it 500 plus??????

The Qb merri-go-round is stuck on we have no plan. I guess now. I'm on the Matt Moore pony..I'm also on the trade the first round pick as it is clear as day we are rebuilding...Again

When I see People here calling others stupid, saying shutup! for no good reason, I realize what kind of lowlives are here and if Armando doesn't clean this mess(yes, the same as the Dolphins) he would fall into that category also.

Alex Smith had 17tds and 3100 yds passing. Signing him will seem like resigning Henne to more money.

Yes the same Henne we let walk. Even Henne threw for more yards with just as many tds. Well almost. LOL

sit back and wait people..

More fans will watch a water polo match then watch the Dullfins.

I admit I'm a blind homer.

..Alright fellas...Seriously, or sadly. The offseason may offer them most entertinment value all year..Lets see what tommorow brings..Can't wait

Omg we didn't sign a seventh round pick in flynn who had an all star cast around him for his two NFL starts for an amazing amount of money that he'll never earn. Good! He sucked anyway!

Not to worry.........Jeff & Company plan on using our 1st Round Draft Pick on..................................................

Jacory Harris

Please Ross, Sell the Team & Forget You Ever Bought Them!!!!!

Armando, I thought you had a new program that filtered impersonators out. What's going on?

DD, Im all for trading out of the 1st rd, trading Jake Long, and trade or cut every player on the roster making more than $4 million a year for whatever draft picks we can get.

The present team wasnt built on a firm foundation. It was built right freakin on top of a California mudslide. Only total rebuild can retify this mess.

Anything less is lipstick on a pig!

I wonder if the Dolphins have a sign up in their war room that says...

Are the Dolphins scouting anyone under 320 pounds for their first round pick?

All in for Flynn? and they lost him? WTF?

Apparently, Ireland is seen by players around the NFL as a loser. Explains why we keep failing to get our man:

You have to take control of the Blog, Armando.

ctphins...sit back and wait for what?

Ireland came from an organization (Dallas) that went ten years without drafting an offensive player in the first round. All we draft are offensive linemen and defensive linemen, so many that the first batch are now beginning to leave in free agency and have to be replaced...undoubtetly by another wave of high draft choices. From Wanstedt to Saban to Ireland...I feel we are trying to recreate the Georgia Tech offense!
