« Dolphins QB search now in spin mode | Main | Overpaying Smith worse than missing on Flynn »

Dolphins fail to land Matt Flynn too (he's on to Seattle)

I am learning to stop underestimating the Dolphins' inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

After not getting a franchise QB last year, and not getting a player even they believed would compete for a starting job (Matt Moore was a surprise to them), and not drafting anyone, and pulling out of the Kyle Orton trade, and not getting Peyton Manning, now Miami is not getting Matt Flynn, either.

Flynn has agreed to a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

The Dolphins?

They're visiting with Alex Smith. They have another visit set up tomorrow with David Garrard.

How do you feel about that one?

I am not a big Flynn proponent. I'm not so sure he's going to be that good. I don't mind him going elsewhere. But the Dolphins do need somebody.

I'm sure the Dolphins will eventually portray this as having a plan (yeah, right) and sticking to that plan of not overspending for any player (including a QB). I'm sure they'll eventually get the message out that Flynn was a nice but not great option.

Sorry, but some facts simply get in the way. For example, someone else apparently believes Flynn is worth a good but not great contract. Seattle is paying approximately $8 million per season -- probably less when the actual numbers come in -- and that's not exactly breaking the bank for a starting QB. Even the $10 million signing bonus is modest for a QB. All indications are the Dolphins thought Flynn to be that potential starter but still couldn't pay him that?

Well then, why did the personnel and offensive staff spend nearly 40 hours of total tape time studying this guy, a figure I was told by a source was conservative? Otherwise, why would coach Joe Philbin be calling him throughout the free agency process to make sure Flynn knew he was a major Miami target? Otherwise why did the Dolphins immediately pivot to Flynn once they knew they'd been eliminated from the Manning derby? Otherwise why did they offer the kid a contract?

Something went wrong here. I was told three days ago Flynn was going to be Miami's guy. I was told it would take a significant screw up to fail to get him in a Dolphins uniform because the club believed he could win the starting job and Flynn liked the idea of playing for Philbin.

So what changed?

Obviously something.

Again, Matt Flynn is just a guy to me. He isn't guaranteed of doing anything great anywhere he goes. But the Dolphins continuing to pass on everybody is starting to raise eyebrows. It makes you wonder what's the problem.

Maybe it's Miami's inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

You got to be kidding me. Could you imagine what the stadium will look like this yr. I think as True dolphin fans we should Boycott the team. No tv or games stop buying all this over priced nfl gear thats worth nothing in two yrs because we have traded the player anyway.I have been a fan since day one. And for the last 15 yrs it really does get worse every yr, Just once in my life before i die of high blood pressure could they do something right. Just the money that Mr Ross will loose in tv revenune and ticket sales would have paid for a couple good players and keep us happy for a yr or two. This freaken idiot we call our general manager has made me flip my freaking lid for the last time. I have tickets on the 35 yard line 4th row for sale .. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP...PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE THEM..

Good evening fellow Dolphin fans,

I have never posted on this blog until now. I read Armando Salguero's blog daily. I am 50 years old and have been a season ticket holder since 1984, that's right 1984. I have seen some down times as of late but nothing like the incompetance of Jeff Ireland and Stephen Ross.

Gentlemen, this what you get when you conduct youselves with so little class over and over. Jeff Ireland doesn't have what other General Manager's have. You can be stern, you can be direct and be no non-sense as well but you still have to treat people with respect. He has no social skills. Stephen Ross you honestly deserve this. You are the worst owner in the NFL. You have made the Miami Dolphins a punch line. Miami was a football town and now it's a nothing town.

I will not renew my season tickets this year. I have no idea how I will spend my Sunday's come this September. I will not spend them watching this team because locally Miami will be blacked out.

The official count of season tickets not renewed for the Miami Dolphins just this month alone is 537 for those counting.

Miami Dolphins are a basement caliber NFL organization because they have a bad combination of having a bad owner and a General Manager who is what he is and that is a college scout.

Better keep Matt Moore in a plastic bubble until Sept.

Draft a WR in first rund, trade up and get Tannehill in 2nd. We will be fine.

LOL Chad.... UMMMM NO I don't miss you. We still have Devlin. :)

The level of incompetence that exists at the top levels of this franchise is mind boggling!!! Ross and Ireland couldn't close the deal with a two dollar hooker let alone any top player or coach. This franchise is done until we get new ownership. The problem is Ross is not going to sell the team so we have to wait till he croaks to at least have a chance to be relevant again. I am done with this franchise!!!

The Manning idea screwed up everything. Not only did Manning screw the Dolphins but multiple teams in the NFL are being held hostage and getting screwed hoping to be his bride. The Dolphins? They are treading water now... Flynn was the only guy who knew how to play Philbins offense; everyone else will be learning a new system. The guys available in FA are all journeymen now, the guy on the Dolphins roster sucks, and there is little hope we select a franchise QB in the draft. No need to watch the Dolphins this next year. Not much reason to watch the draft other than to watch Ireland inflict major emotional distress on Dolphins everywhere.

Dolfans thing Alex Smith was borught here to force Flynn's hand. Smith only came here to try and force the 49ers hand.

Harbaugh met Ross, he's probably rolling in stitches laughing so hard! LOL

Cleveland will pick Tannehill, they have the picks, they are not all in with McCoy. Unbelievably the Phins would actually have to trade up (LMAO) to get Tannehill.
Can not make this stuff up.

Boycott this team, if it is not clear to you by now this owner does not take this team seriously you have a problem and you must be a poor fan as well, a good fan although loyal to the end voices his opinion, and the only valid opinion you can have today is to repudiate the owner and front office.

I'm not so sure how does Philbin feels about joining the Titanic here, we are clearly an organization with no leader, no captain. If we are all in going for Tannehill why are we pursuing Smith and Garrard for the love of God?!

Trading up 10 1st round picks for RG3 would have been better at this point. Of course I'm exaggerating but I hope you understand my logic. Three first round picks were nothing, besides it was really only two since the one this year would have been a swap. It was time to unload the overpaid players we had to recoup the draft picks. Marshall, Dansby, Bell, Fasano, and Long, yes Long because he is virtually impossible to be signed next year.

Sell the team POS.

Just play Matt Moore and please go 1-15 next year and select Matt Barkley. OR 6-10 again and give up the farm much like Washington did and still get Barkley via trade.

Something tells me Blackmon and Floyd are more favored in miamis first round pick than most are speculating till this point...they have got to put some kind of HOPE in this offense for next year...

The Dolphins have not found a true playmaker in the past four drafts. Not one. Yes, Long is excellent (although there is concern his injuries over the past two seasons are signs of his breaking down physcially). No elite WR. No elite TE. No elite DE. No elite CB. And, of course, no elite QB.

7-9, 7-9, and 6-10. And a circus of an offseason so far. Brandon Marshall was the only entertainment on or off the field.

Again...we have Ross and Ireland...every year...EVERY DAMN YEAR!

The Dolphins are a joke and Ireland is the biggest piece of garbage. I hope the stands are empty this year so that this owner finally gets the hint. We knew they would miss on Manning, but to miss on Flynn? Are you freaking kidding me, and now they are going after David Garrard? We'll see Philbin resign next week, you heard it here first.

When I say "restructuring contracts" that includes also giving players like Starks (who has earned it) extensions so you can spread the money out. This happens all the time.

these two guys obviously are just plain idioits even the guys on nfl network said they have no idea what the dolphins are thinking,or what there plan is.Ross/Ireland would have a tough time spelling cat if you spotted them tha c and the t.Like I said Ireland is Matt millen reincarnated.

I wounder if they kept that MR. ROSS, SAVE OUR DOLPHINS FIRE IRELAND banner and how much it would cost to reactivate the flights.

Perhaps we can make up a Banner saying ROSS, SAVE OUR DOLPHINS, SELL THE TEAM.

It should be flown daily over the entire area. Fans should stage an Occupy Sun Life protest.

Thank God we dodged that bullet! Flynn just raped the seahawks!!! and he has got BUST!!! written all over his face!

Yeah I have to agree with Boulder on Armando. He writes an article saying the Dolphins would be stupid to over pay for Flynn. Seattle then obviously over pays and Armando blasts the Dolphins. The dude just lost a lot of credibility there.

Stick to your opinions Armando, enough flip flopping it's making you look bad.

No way I would have paid that much for him, no way in hell. On to the draft and stick with Moore. Jeff had better get someone in the draft to replace Marshall and he had better draft a QB or my objectivity is getting flushed and I will join the gang of defeat. Hoping the homers are at least now joining me in being objective, welcome aboard Homers! Next stop the draft, and then from there it is possible we will be switching trains and jumping on with the gang of defeat! :)

Isn't this a move you just AFTER the season rather than today? There's not a single person on this blog who KNOWS what Matt Flynn will become. I'm just as happy they didn't spend $26 million over three years. People keep saying 'the Redskins were right to trade for RGII', the 'Hawks were right to sign Flynn'. These are two franchises that have been doing things wrong for years too. They're not any smarter than us.

The SECRET is to get that potential franchise QB. I'd don't believe Flynn was it, I don't believe Moore is it and I don't believe Smith is it. We either draft him this year or we stink and we draft Barkley or someone else next year. All is not lost.

I tell you what went wrong, this regime still stinks of Parcells, and his name starts with Jeff, and ends with Ireland.

Someone please put a Billboard up on I-95 that says RossIreland=Liars.com

YG making lots of sense today. What if a Player doesn't want to restructure, youmakeofferhecan'trefuse? Only one option. Trade him.

Look, Ross is an idiot and Ireland will do what Ross wants no matter what that is. Ireland turned against his 'Friend' that was the head coach of Miami last year. Now whether you liked Sparano or not, he was screwed over several times by Ross and Ireland! And if you don't think coaches and players talk then you need to get a brain! Manning had to be asked, as a favor, to meet with the fins. You would he meet with? The coaching staff! NOT ROSS or IRELAND! DUH!! Figure it out yet? Ross and Ireland have effectively blackballed themselves with the elite of the league. The only ones that will come to Miami are the ones that don't care or have enough money to not have too. Time and time again Ireland shows he doesn't know what he is doing or is incompetent. The Dolphins of the past and their reputation are long gone. They are in the bottom of the basement. New management is the only thing that will change that and as bad as it is, thanks to the above mentioned idiots, that will take a long time after the move takes place! I love my Fins, I HATE what Ireland and Ross has made them!

Here's the problem:

We are DEFINITELY 4th in the division now. I mean, we have made NO upgrades in free agency and we have traded our best receiver for two thirds after paying 2 seconds and 24 million to him. This "win now" is a joke...We will NEVER go to the playoffs until we get a QB.

One consistent pattern I've learned about the Ross/Ireland era is that what ever the media or fans speculate as a likely scenario for the Dolphins have always been wrong. Harbaugh, Cowher, Gruden, Fisher, Luck, Manning, Flynn. Let's stop speculating on Tannehill, because we may end up with Pat White, folks!

"As YG well said, we still have to pay the Rookies. The same, I don't think we have the bread to pay for one of the high-impact ones. Trade down. And pray."

You are wrong.

Poor Joe Philbin, he just realized first hand why no other coach would agree to work with Ireland and Ross. This was a lay up, a slam dunk, a shoe in, and Ireland absolutely blows it. I could handle not getting Manning, he was 35, coming off of 4 neck surgeries, and was a long shot anyway. Not getting Flynn? Something went terribly terribly wrong here. And unlike previous moves where you could question who's fault was it really, there is only ONE person to point the finger at this time.

Knowing Ireland, he would trade the only black kid on a pee wee league in Beverly Hills.

It's funny seeing the same people on this site and other fan sites defend the DOlphins...

Open your eyes or you will be the only fools buying tickets.

I love the fans who think the Dolphins will win 6-7 games this year! That's some powerful stuff you're smoking! 3-4 games at best, if we overachieve! We don't have a real QB, we don't have a #1 or even a true #2 receiver, we have an aging/injury prone running back, injury depleted OL, a brand new coach (which may be the only offseason improvement) whose poor son recently died, we're looking at a long long season. History dictates that the only thing that gets a team administration to get its act together is their lack of profit, their bottom line! Boycott all the games this year, show them we will stop buying their product and force a change! I don't want to see any Dolphins 'fans' rooting for them to win a game because they feel sorry for the team and label the rest of us as bad fans. We're not bad fans, we want this team to put a quality product on the field, and as long as Ireland and Ross are here, that will not happen! Boycott the Dolphins 2012!

..I can't give Ireland credit for this..Like he is sgenius for passing on Flynn..Passing on Flynn isn't the point. It is the inability to land the desired pieces..They stay away like the Phins have herpes on the lips.. People can tell themselves Flynn wasn't really in the plans because of this or that. I think that is hooey.. something is going on with the orginization that is keeping these players and coaches away...

I will try and remain positive, as hard as it is when you look at the big glazed doughnut the team keeps being fed.

We will NOT draft Tannehill...we will draft Coples...write it down !!!

And for those clammoring for Tannehill, remember as Wolfman pointed out a few days ago, he was merely a 2nd rounder a few months ago until the QB market got unexpectedly thin and his supply/demand value inflated. Haven't we been down the 2nd round QB road a time or two before?

But at this point all options have been exhausted. The Dolphin's winner? It's Matt Moore. He now appears to be the uncontested starter for 2012. To those who think he's the answer I sure hope you're right.

Carolina just got a new fan!! lets go Cam!!

@ Jack

Philbin coached Flynn for his entire pro career he definitely knows what he is capable of doing. I do not know how involved he was with the negotiations but if he was all in on Flynn I think they could/would have easily have done better that Seattle offer. If Philbin did not think that highly of him then lets move on. I think our plan should be to draft QB Russell Wilson if he was two inches taller he would have been a top ten pick just look at his numbers! He is a playmaker!

Flynn is NOT worth 8.5 mil per year. For basically an unproven QB, your looking at closer to 5-6 mil at most. In 2 years it will be us, laughing at how we would even think about signing this guy. I'm actually fine with Moore, the guy is actually more proven than Flynn and showed some glimpses of good QB play. I would think we would be in for Tannehill, but my gut is telling me he is gone at #4 to Cleveland and its not worth jumping up 5 spots to get him. If anything, we just suck it up for 1 year without a franchise QB and suck for Matt Barkley, who is going to as good as any QB prospect this year. We've gone over a decade without a franchise QB, what's one more year.

Daniel Thomas cas play QB if everything else fails...

Armando, your the biggest idot I know when it comes to your blog! You always contradict yourself! Take your foot out of your mouth fool!

How low this franchise have become. We r the joke of the NFL news

F uk the dolphins! I am burning all my gear in disgust with this organization!

I guess ross and irelands thinking goes like" If we screwed ourselves out of the #1 pick this year, then we will make amends for it next year"...SO FAR, SO GOOD GENTLEMEN...Brilliant Plan!!

Our front office is a joke!!

Flynns contract with Seattle was reasonable you numbskulls. 3 YRS/26 MILLION does not mean 3 YRS/26MILLION. The Seahawks can cut their losses after one year if Flynn fails to deliver and spend nowhere near 26 million. If he does delivery and is a franchise QB, the Seahawks laugh all the way to the bank. A franchise QB will now set you back $15 - $25 MILLION a YEAR.

"MIAMI (AP) — San Francisco 49ers free agent quarterback Alex Smith has left the Miami Dolphins' complex after a 5½-hour meeting with the team."

Okay. No contract so we blew it. Good luck with ticket sales for the foreseeable future.

I hope they paid Smith before is too late

Tweet from Jeff Ireland -

Why is everyone de-friending me on Facebook?

I don't believe in no more extensions or whatever, DraftPicks. At the end, they are the same crap and will count against the cap. BTW, please explain,(In detail, please, I'm very meticulous) why am I wrong?

im 45 yrs old been a dolfan all my life. this could be the most frustating off season i have ever seen. mising manning is cool he never intended on coming here! losing out on flynn is a big mistake we cant afford to take a qb in the first round. if we get tebow gerard or young im done with the dolphins!

What happen Ireland? Need to save money cause your mom stopped turning tricks?

I disagree. Mike McCarthy coached Flynn, Rodgers and the rest of the Green Bay team.

Philbin was just collecting a paycheck. I will never believe coaching QB's is something magical. Either they got it or they don't.

Who the hell is Matt Moore going to throw to??? No Marshall, no double teams, no threat to go up and get the ball. Defenses can play tight on the line and shut down the run game. Reggie Bush becomes a nobody. Short slants and and 5 yard outs.

it's obvious Joe Philbin didnt like Flynn from the start .. he never showed any interest in him at all going for Manning first. I say GLAD WE DODGED THAT BULLET ... FLYNN HAS BUST WRITTEN ALL OVER HIS FACE!

It is pretty bad when the Fins can't land a 7th round pick, with two games under his belt, and his former coach was recruiting him. ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME????
Wait, and we get rid of one of our only offensive weapons that at least commanded a little respect; for 2 third rounders. ARE YOU EFFING EFFING ME???????

So no Manning, No Flynn, no Fisher, no Harbaugh, and I will bet no Smith either. That leaves Garrard (barfing like crazy here and f arting too). Ooooo the stench in the air is, well, STINKY. You know, stinky like the Fins will be in 2012. What's the line in Vegas that Ireland will be fired this season? Oh, wait, bossy Rossy has his ugly face really deep up Ireland's butt. Not happening either.

Well, guess I should really be looking at the Bucs. Looks like they've made more of a splash than the Fins. This movie has a bad start and usually that means that it has even a worse ending. Bye bye Fins, go smell the gas.

Yes. You go by the guaranteed money which is $10 Million. He would have run the same offense he knows from GB & worst case scenario--if he didn't work out we could have just cut bait. Big deal??? We didn't sign Smith either so clearly Ireland is a moron.

Serious question. Not sure if you have the answer but has Owner Ross been present at ALL of these QB meets?

I hope the answer is NO so that when Ross gets and reads in the papers and all his friends see what a joke THE SCOUT Ireland is that he gets totally embarrassed and finally fires Ireland.

If Ross WAS at all these meets then we fans fully know who had a hand in these flops.

I like what Matt Moore did last season, without a training camp. I rather go with him this season and draft a QB if one is available or wait till next season.
