« Dolphins QB search now in spin mode | Main | Overpaying Smith worse than missing on Flynn »

Dolphins fail to land Matt Flynn too (he's on to Seattle)

I am learning to stop underestimating the Dolphins' inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

After not getting a franchise QB last year, and not getting a player even they believed would compete for a starting job (Matt Moore was a surprise to them), and not drafting anyone, and pulling out of the Kyle Orton trade, and not getting Peyton Manning, now Miami is not getting Matt Flynn, either.

Flynn has agreed to a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

The Dolphins?

They're visiting with Alex Smith. They have another visit set up tomorrow with David Garrard.

How do you feel about that one?

I am not a big Flynn proponent. I'm not so sure he's going to be that good. I don't mind him going elsewhere. But the Dolphins do need somebody.

I'm sure the Dolphins will eventually portray this as having a plan (yeah, right) and sticking to that plan of not overspending for any player (including a QB). I'm sure they'll eventually get the message out that Flynn was a nice but not great option.

Sorry, but some facts simply get in the way. For example, someone else apparently believes Flynn is worth a good but not great contract. Seattle is paying approximately $8 million per season -- probably less when the actual numbers come in -- and that's not exactly breaking the bank for a starting QB. Even the $10 million signing bonus is modest for a QB. All indications are the Dolphins thought Flynn to be that potential starter but still couldn't pay him that?

Well then, why did the personnel and offensive staff spend nearly 40 hours of total tape time studying this guy, a figure I was told by a source was conservative? Otherwise, why would coach Joe Philbin be calling him throughout the free agency process to make sure Flynn knew he was a major Miami target? Otherwise why did the Dolphins immediately pivot to Flynn once they knew they'd been eliminated from the Manning derby? Otherwise why did they offer the kid a contract?

Something went wrong here. I was told three days ago Flynn was going to be Miami's guy. I was told it would take a significant screw up to fail to get him in a Dolphins uniform because the club believed he could win the starting job and Flynn liked the idea of playing for Philbin.

So what changed?

Obviously something.

Again, Matt Flynn is just a guy to me. He isn't guaranteed of doing anything great anywhere he goes. But the Dolphins continuing to pass on everybody is starting to raise eyebrows. It makes you wonder what's the problem.

Maybe it's Miami's inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

I've said all along the dolphins planned to draft Tannehill in the 1st, looking for veteran to come in as backup/compete with Moore (since his contract is up after this season).

They will groom Tannehill to be next qb.

DOWN WITH IRELAND!!!!

No team will do a trade with Miami because it cant afford to pay him(restructure). They'll just wait for Miami to cut him. Dont you guys know how they nfl works yet?

Okay, what makes the Philbin lovers think Miami just didn't settle?

All the HOF-good coaches-were gone.

Since you guys are not offering any constructive ideas, I'll have to repeat my previous comment. Oh, and what have the Jets done, kept Sanchez????
If you all hold your horses and take a step back, you'll see Philbin is making the decisions after Ross screwed up again w/Peyton. Thanks to the new salary cap agreement, Philbin's style is perfect - Draft and build, don't overspend on free agents.
Keeping in mind Oline and Inside Linebacker are deep this draft, draft as follows:

1st pick: DB - Claiborne, DE - Coples or Ingram.
2nd: WR - Stephen hill (Think Megatron)
3rd: LaMichael James will probably drop 'cause of size (Think a young Bush) or best OT available
4rd: Best OT or Inside linebacker available

Green Bay offense here we come!

AND WE HAVE 6 MONTHS TO SEE THIS TEAM PLAY..IF THE FINS ARE REBUILDING WHY DO THEY HAVE KARLOS ''OVERPAID''DANSBY AND Y.BELL WHO'S GONNA GET 7 MILL THIS YEAR..AND WHY DID WE RESIGN BIG PAUL FOR ALL THIS MONEY..AND WHY DID WE SIGN ARTIS HICKS WHO THEY SHOULD HAVE SIGNED 8 YEARS AGO OR THE CORNER MARSHALL WHO.. WHO WOULD HAVE GUESS WAS THERE FIRST SIGNING...WHATS GOING ON!

No stigma with us, DD, we just don't have what it take$.

If you don't understand the GM signs the players and NOT the coach, you shouldn't post. It doesn't matter if Philbin wanted Flynn or not, he DOES NOT SIGN the players nor DOES HE OFFER contracts. Ireland makes those decisions period.

All those decisions look pretty stupid right now.

Tebow is praying that he doesn't wind up in Miami. He seems like a good guy and I hope he avoids the Dolphins since the organization is so dysfunctional.

THE DEZ BRYANT FIASCO PUT EVERYBODY AGAINST IRELAND,...ROSS SALE THE DOLPHINS AND GET OUT OF TOWN ASAP AND TAKE IRELAND WITH YOU. YOUR SEASON TICKETS WILL GO DOWN BECAUSE OF THAT CLOWN YOU HAVE AS GM.
ERIC WINSTON--22 MIL= TOP 10 RT IN THE LEAGUE AND YOUR GM LET HIM GO
MATT FLYNN----26 MIL --FRIENDLY CAP OPTIONS
YOU ARE A VERY GOOD PRETENDER-IF YOU THINK PAYTON MANNING COMING HERE TO PLAY FOR YOU, LMAO-YOU NEVER WILL BE A CONTENDER. GET OUT OF HERE.

Loria forgive me ,u r not that bad.Im gonna start buying Marlins tickets

+1

He was drafted in the 7th round, his green bay team let him go, his former OC just passed on him. I think we just did the right thing and hope we don't sign a qb but rather draft one that coach Philban can mold

Now watch, they'll sign Matt Hassellback once Manning signs with the Titans, draft a guy like Kurt Cousins in the 3rd round, and expect everyone to think that they have their franchise QB of the future.

Someone help me out and find a word that Rhymes with Barkley, we're gonna need something to call the 2012 season.

Are you guys ready for Tim Tebow?!?! Yes, he will be your QB next season, trust me.

DD,

In the case of Flynn is has nothing to with not wanting to come to Miami. The team wasn't prepared to go to a team that was going to pay him less than what Seattle offered....nothing more, nothing less. Blast him if you want guys, but in Ireland's mind it is CLEAR that Flynn isn't a significant upgrade over Moore. All this 'he plays in the system' and 'familiat with the coach is hooey'. Matt Moore is a decent QB. I think the plan all along was to get competition/insurance for him. I don't feel and Ireland obviously doesn't either, feel that Flynn is with the money he got. Let's find out who was right...

What I DON'T understand is why no contracts have been re-negotiated and why Bell is still on the team. Free up some cap space.

On the bright side at least all our competition for a starting QB has pretty much been eliminated...

Armando
Sorry, but you are like the rest of the Miami writers and fans. We all live in the Mushroom Barn and believe everything we hear. I have listened to this crap for years, since Shula retired. There are NO FOOTBALL MEN in the Dolphin organization. They all believe they are smart but unfortunately their past performance betrays them.

This situation will continue until someone who understands football owns the team.

Can somebody say INCOMPETENCE, INEPTITUDE, STUPIDITY, How do the Dolphins manage to conitnue to appoint such feeble minded clowns to executive positions

@ Jack

Philbin knows what Flynn is capable of that is for sure. The unknown is how involved he was in the negotiation process. Reason would lead me to believe that if he was high on Flynn we would have signed him. Time to move on a draft Wilson!

Forever Dolphin, please explain to everyone WTF you are talking about?? Philbin signs NO ONE. He has no power. Have you not been here??? Other coaches are NOT here because Ross would not let them have say over Ireland in personnel. I hate when people say Philbin this, Philbin that. Philbin has NO SAY according to Ross. You think he was lying???

ROFLMAO.

Dolphins' offered backup QB money, when he wanted starter money. He got starter money at Seatle.

Matt Flynn is a 7th round pick, and why are all you guys freaking out. Who cares.

We are better off drafting a QB in April.

"The base value of Matt Flynn's three-year contract in Seattle is only $19 million, with $10 million guaranteed.
The initial Flynn report claimed he received a three-year, $26 million deal. Per the Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel, however, Flynn's base contract is just $19 million with $5 million more available through incentives. It appears the remaining $2 million could be had via "unlikely to be earned" incentives. Either way, it's a much more team-friendly deal than the Cardinals gave Kevin Kolb last offseason. Even if the full "guarantee" is only $2 million less. If both Flynn and Kolb emerged as viable starting quarterbacks, the Seahawks would be paying Flynn much less than the Cardinals would for Kolb. "

Here's the REAL numbers. 3 years/$19 Million!!!! The other $7 Million is in incentives. This makes it even worse for Ireland & Ross' credibility.

Again I agree with you Craig restructure contracts, get rid of Bell. Still have to give Ireland credit for sticking to his guns (like last year not overpaying for Orton). Let's see if we finally draft qb in 1st round.

I imagine that Ross is probably about fed up with Ireland. He's a new owner, trying to make a splash and bring in some high profile talent, and Ireland keeps botching it up somehow.Flynn was supposed to be a given, he is the guy Philbin knows, the guy that knows the offense Philbin is bringing in.At this point you can almost see the egg dripping down Ross's face after two straight years of getting turned down by every big name coach he chased and failing to make good on the promise of a signifignant upgrade at quarterback.I think maybe it's time to cut ireland loose and let Philbin bring in his own gm who shares his vision. Clearly Ireland can't get the job done, do we really want him handling any more offseason moves, much less another draft? Thank you for bringing in Bush last year Jeff, there's the door.

And come on media guys you all have done everything since 1994 to help ruin this team. You guys blast this team and it's coaches so bad it is no suprise a stud FA or HC won't come here.
The south Florida media kills a fan moral with this trash talk everyday. Keep going and true fans might not have a team down there to bash.

i'm not panicking. i wasn't crazy about Manning or Flynn.
There are a lot of QB hungry teams out there and all it took was a modest offer from Seattle to get him
I think the plan should be thus:

give cleveland the 3rd round pick in we got for Marshall, we swap 1st round picks and get Blackmon. Cleveland in tern get Tannehill. Everyone's happy.

Then, RT or TE in round 2.

Mark my words! Watch Flynn turn into the next Drew Brees!!! I just cannot believe how dumb , cheap and idiotic Ireland and Ross are. My nightmare has come true..yet again

oscar,

It's not the same because even the player signed at 8 won't make the kind of money Flynn just signed for today. So what would you rather have, a guy you pay more money to who you pretty much know his upside or a guy like Tannehill who is younger, you're going to play less but has a bigger upside?

The Dolphins didn't "fail" to do anything. The Dolphins gave Matt Flynn a number they were comfortable with and Flynn decided it wasn't good enough.
I said from the beginning Flynn was going to chase the money and the connection with Philbin wasn't going to be the deciding factor.
Given the history of these types of signings, the Dolphins did the right thing. They never work out in the favor of the team and there was just too much risk Flynn wasn't going to be starting caliber or an upgrade to what they already had in Matt Moore.

Craig M,

When has Ireland been right about ANYTHING?

Rafel,

Sanchez is better then any QB Miami has had since Marino, what does that say?

Blackcerote,

Ireland has them on the roster because he is trying to save his job. If they hired a new GM who had a blank slate, they would be cut.

Blah, blah, blah. The fact is if Philbin really thought that much of Flynn he would have fought for him harder. Maybe Philbin doesn't see Flynn beating out Moore and now you pay $8 million a year for a backup QB. I have to believe if Philbin really, truly believed Flynn would be the starting QB next year the deal would have got done.

What do u all think of Pat Devlin?

Hey get a clue if the Seahawks cut Flynn after one year they will have paid Matt Flynn 10 million dollars to either suck or ride the bench for a year. Still not a good deal.

Larry Csonka,

Please remove my name from the Dolphins honor roll...

Good one!

We just lost out on another QB, oh well....Let's talk instead about issues that really worry our front office...will there be a Gator/Tebow Appreciation Night this year? If not, can we host a Jeff Ireland Appreciation Night! I mean, if we've started a tradition honoring people who beat this franchise...why not?

Also, does this utter mismanagement mean we'll have to settle on B-list celebrities to invest in our team? Who'll be walking the orange carpet this year?!

I am no economist, but I do have a lot of common sense(my sister does too). The only way I see out of this mess, is cutting or trading some high salaried Players.

I agree with you JL

Some people here need to get their head removed from Ireland's as$...

To those defending the move because we would have overpaid Flynn, really get the F out of here! If that was the plan then why are we pursuing Smith and Garrard? How is that spending wise especially considering our precarious cap situation?

I guarantee you at this juncture a lot of fans are thinking rebuilding so why not dump all those players who are grossly overpaid. We could have done so before most teams addressed their needs via FAs and acquire much needed draft picks.

Sell the team POS.

Armando, I thought you were the one who wrote that Flynn was important but only at the right price. Another batch of Ireland hating by you and your followers. I'm so glad there are other sports writers!!!

I can't understand why people keep repeating news stories since before free agency started about Flynn coming to dolphins when no one in our organization ever stated that (only media conjecture).

Had we really wanted Flynn we would have signed him day 1 because we knew we never had the cash for Manning.

is matt hasselback the next qb here?? lol

Tpain,

That would have all been well & good IF Ross/Ireland didn't announce to the world after the season that there BIGGEST need was to get a franchise QB. Plus now with the Marshall trade we didn't sign a WR in FA so we have to find a top WR in the draft.

Not sure how ANYONE can have confidence in this franchise today.

Restructure contracts? ROTFLMAO!

After watching this offseason. What player's dumb enough to take less money? Refusing to restrfucture is a way out of all of this insanity here in Miami.

No team's going to agree to a trade when they know Miami will end up having to release that player for nothing anyway.

Restructure? ROTFLMAO! LOL

Perhaps the owner Ross has this all planned out. it gives him an out to move the team to the WC.

Empty Sun life stadium and he will go to the WC and get some City to front him for a new stadium with incentives and pay no taxes. Sort of like your local County IDA (Industrial development Agencies) does to bring in business. Build for them or have them build in your back yard and tell them they don't need to pay any taxes for 20 years.

Stephan Ross is planning to change the Team name to honor Jeff Ireland to: "Miami Acorns"

Acorns = players that no one wants
Acorns = players at discount
Acorns = turds
Acorns = Dallas rejects

Who cares? Matt Flynn, Matt Moore, Alex Smith, whats the difference?

Same thing Larry Csonka said.

I just want to say...unbelievable...Jeff Ireland is worthless...sure hope Solaia develops into a great passer

People applaud the Dolphins for not overpaying for Flynn. Ok, I get that but this organization overpays for every position EXCEPT QB! That's why we're hamstrung by the cap.

i dont really care about the flynn thing. but ireland is a complete retard. id draft the best player avail with each pick. wait on the qb, hopefully next year someone will be avail in draft or free agency again for us to chase. i can easily see them signing garbage hasselback if manning goes to titans

Exactly GarbagePlate, sign one to compete with Moore (don't overpay) draft Tannehill in the 1st, problem solved.

@We Have Draft Picks.. NO IT JUST SHOWS how much the dolphins brass (JOE PHILBIN) DONT THINK MAT FLYNN WAS GOING TO bE A STARTER IN THIS LEAGUE!

Understand that both the 'Skins and Browns had ZERO interest in Flynn. ZERO. So he's not all that. Jags need a QB and didn't even talk to him. Neither did the Broncos. So I think guys are getting ALL wound up a 7th round draft choice, who's started two games in the NFL. Seems to me just about EVERYONE on here wanted Orton last year, including me, and guessing what...it would have been the WRONG choice. Sometimes NOT making the move is the right move.

And the guys saying the Browns WILL take Tannehill at 8, you don't KNOW that. There's just as great a chance they draft players to help McCoy. They've had no one to help him for the last couple of years and Hillis is gone. I think they pick Richardson at 4.

start the "Suck for Barkley" chants now!!!

For everyone using the logic 'If Joe Philbin thought Flynn was a franchise QB. why didn't he sign him, or try to land him harder'.

1st. Ireland makes the calls. He Signs, drafts, and cuts the players he wants too, period. This was made crystal clear in Philbin's introductory press conference.

2nd. It has been WELL PUBLICIZED that Philbin called Flynn at the start of free agency and told him that he and the team wanted him. They were waiting on Manning, which Flynn was fine with, and then he would be their guy.

This is a screw up from a GM who doesn't get it. In order for Flynn not to of signed here, he had to be completly turned off by the organization (Ireland) or had been so low balled in his offer (Ireland) that he had no real choice but to take Seattle's very average and resonable offer.

Hope Soliai can play rb too. Defenses will have 11 men in the box this year! LOL
