« Dolphins QB search now in spin mode | Main | Overpaying Smith worse than missing on Flynn »

Dolphins fail to land Matt Flynn too (he's on to Seattle)

I am learning to stop underestimating the Dolphins' inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

After not getting a franchise QB last year, and not getting a player even they believed would compete for a starting job (Matt Moore was a surprise to them), and not drafting anyone, and pulling out of the Kyle Orton trade, and not getting Peyton Manning, now Miami is not getting Matt Flynn, either.

Flynn has agreed to a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

The Dolphins?

They're visiting with Alex Smith. They have another visit set up tomorrow with David Garrard.

How do you feel about that one?

I am not a big Flynn proponent. I'm not so sure he's going to be that good. I don't mind him going elsewhere. But the Dolphins do need somebody.

I'm sure the Dolphins will eventually portray this as having a plan (yeah, right) and sticking to that plan of not overspending for any player (including a QB). I'm sure they'll eventually get the message out that Flynn was a nice but not great option.

Sorry, but some facts simply get in the way. For example, someone else apparently believes Flynn is worth a good but not great contract. Seattle is paying approximately $8 million per season -- probably less when the actual numbers come in -- and that's not exactly breaking the bank for a starting QB. Even the $10 million signing bonus is modest for a QB. All indications are the Dolphins thought Flynn to be that potential starter but still couldn't pay him that?

Well then, why did the personnel and offensive staff spend nearly 40 hours of total tape time studying this guy, a figure I was told by a source was conservative? Otherwise, why would coach Joe Philbin be calling him throughout the free agency process to make sure Flynn knew he was a major Miami target? Otherwise why did the Dolphins immediately pivot to Flynn once they knew they'd been eliminated from the Manning derby? Otherwise why did they offer the kid a contract?

Something went wrong here. I was told three days ago Flynn was going to be Miami's guy. I was told it would take a significant screw up to fail to get him in a Dolphins uniform because the club believed he could win the starting job and Flynn liked the idea of playing for Philbin.

So what changed?

Obviously something.

Again, Matt Flynn is just a guy to me. He isn't guaranteed of doing anything great anywhere he goes. But the Dolphins continuing to pass on everybody is starting to raise eyebrows. It makes you wonder what's the problem.

Maybe it's Miami's inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

THE QUATERBACK CURSE WILL BE BROKEN ''WHEN THEY DRAFT ONE IN THE FIRST ROUND!

John Q. Could not have put it better myself. i would not want to work for Ross and ireland, why would anyone with talent and other choices want to?

..The point isn't weather Flynn was going to be great, or garbage. It's not about the cost, or the bargin..It is about the failure to land the player the team wants..People can argue that We never wanted Flynn in the first place..We all know this is hooey. He was a priority..Manning was a priority..Fisher..

Personal opinion about each man isn't the issue..Feel free to voice what you think. You cannot debate that there is something going on that is keeping the valued commodities away(values in which the team prioritizes)

Thing is, I wish every sportswriter who said they don't like or understand what the team is doing, tell us what THEY would do. Specifically. That way we have something to compare it to. But all you hear is, well, I'm not saying I would do that, or pay that, or sign that, etc, etc.....tell us what you WOULD do. Or shut up. Because we can make our own blogs and put up tweets from espn as to what's going on with the Dolphins, then complain when another QB goes unsigned. That much we can do on our own.

Hey Jack that's mighty f***king immature of you to keep bringing up Philbins dead son. Disgusting to say the least. Grow the f#*k up!

I'm so speechless about all of this.. I really think the dolphins fan base is going to take a major blow this year. I love the phins, I don't even know who I could start following instead, but its so sad to suffer year after year after year... years!

What is this, Jack Sparrow, the guilty trip? You don't know Philbin from beans. HOW DARE YOU JUDGE A MAN IN THIS WAY!!! Who is paying you, Jack, to write such misery on this Blog. I'm sure it's somebody as you don't have the balls to tell Philbin in his face. Right?

Can the NFL take over a team with an incompetent owner? like MLB or the NBA.. The NFL should look into this franchise, its messing up the NFL brand! MLB took over the Dodgers.
Roger Goodell please take over the Dolphins and force the owner to sell the team. Ross is a JETS fan and he is making the Dolphins suck on purpose. If you need proof he kept Ireland as GM!

Jon,

They didn't get him for nothing. They got him for $26 mil, $10 mil of which is guaranteed. You might have heard of something called a 'salary cap'. We're hard against it right now.

That's great Jon, you've already annointed Flynn as Matt Schaub. Good for you. You're better than most of us. Just one question Jon, in all the time that Schaub has been in Houston how many playoff games has he won? Tell you what, I'll make it easy for you, so you don't have to look it up.....ZERO.

Darryl Dunphy,

Welcome to reality. Some here just cant make the trip! LOL

Darryl I respect your opinion but I never heard a team rep say Flynn was a priority on the media ever stated that through supposition.

1+1=2 Philbin was his coach
he knows the system
therefore he is a priority

Anyone applauding the Larry Csonka post couldnt have been a fan for too long. No matter what these guys do to screw up they can never tarnish those great players names. They may be sad for the CURRENT state of the team but they would NEVER be embarrassed about what they accomplished together or the memory of the dynasty. Yes they were a dynasty and would have won a third superbowl in a row had they not been raped by the refs on the last play of the championship game. Do not put Zonks name in the same universe with these current idiots.

SHUT UP! Remove my name dammit! You can put my name back up there when Ross and Ireland leave town and when we go back to the old fight song not that lame Jimmy Buffet song! If I have to hear that stupid song one more time after yet another field goal (cause God knows we can't score a TD), I'm just going to take a shotgun blast to the face!

THE BIGGEST FAILURE WAS IRELAND NOT DRAFTING MALLET WHEN HE HAD THE CHANCE. THE REST WILL BE HISTORY.

Flynn has a huge forehead. Usually big foreheads translates to greatness.

Craig M,

They both decided RGIII was THE best option, over Flynn and Manning and went for it. That's different then having no QB and no plan. They both had the same plan and the Redskins executed it. The funny thing is, all these people now jumping on Tannehills like he's a sure thing, when a lot of the so called experts thinks Cleveland will draft him at 4. I'm telling you, they are completely screwed. Ireland gambled with the low ball offer and Flynn called his bluff. Simple as that

BREAKING NEWS:SMITH JOINING DOLPHINS>4 YEARS 40 MILLIONS

"Another Swing And Miss" For the Dolphins., Maybe the players and coaches feel the same way do., That having a Idiot for a GM(Ireland) And a Idiot for a Owner(Ross) Means a death sentance fror your Carreer. Just saying, Players and Coaches stay awy from this eam like Odin from a shower.

THE BIGGEST FAILURE WAS IRELAND NOT DRAFTING MALLET WHEN HE HAD THE CHANCE. THE REST WILL BE HISTORY.

Great and if Garrard gets turned off by us, maybe Matt Hasselbeck will be around. We REALLY need to adopt the Patriots philosophy - overpay the QB and no one else. With no stars and no money under the cap I think it may be time to do something with Long and Dansby either contract wise or roster wise. We obviously have way too much money tied up in these guys.

GETTING ALEX SMITH IS MORE OF A PUNCH IN THE CHIN FOR HARBAUGH...WHO IF HE DOESN'T GET MANNING HE COULD BE IN THE TANK!

Craig M, I'm going to echo what someone else wrote. This team "consistently fails" to land its priorities. I see NO silver lining here. I would have been just fine with Moore and Henne competing for a starting job this year. But we gave up Henne for nothing, let em go, got rid of a receiver who caught over 1000 yards two years in a row and we have Devlin, Moore and ???. This IS a problem, for a team who claimed the problem was the Coach.

Armando, just in case you don't know, there are limits of transgression on other People. We also have known you for quite some time.

One other thing Jon, Schaub was a THIRD round pick but don't let facts get in the way of your argument.

You keep plugging your 7th round draft picks in and let's see how far you get.

Ow. Stop hitting me. Ow. Stop hitting me. Ow. Stop hitting me.

Yeah,,,lol! Armando you're ditching your source who told you Flynn to Miami was almost a done deal right? How in the hell are we ever supposed to trust you and your sourves if you're always wrong? WTF?!

People keep asking, were did it go wrong.....My opinion, Parcels taking Jake Long over Matt Ryan. That has set us back 5 yrs already. Sorry, but nobody even knows if Long is on the field play to play. Bet they know when Ryan is out there.....

THE BIGGEST FAILURE WAS IRELAND NOT DRAFTING MALLET WHEN HE HAD THE CHANCE. THE REST WILL BE HISTORY.

I've been a fan since 1969, but I'm about done with this team.

THE ONLY GUY IN THE MIAMI MEDIA WHO HAS GOOD SOURCES FROM THE FINS IS BARRY JACKSON!

bobbyd, time to fire ireland yet?

Maybe Philbin was not as sold on Flynn as we have been led to believe. I think Joe Philbin may know more about Matt Flynn then all of us combined.

This big mystery for dopey reporter.
Not mystery to me at all.
Good FAs go to good teams.
WashedUp FAs called acorns go to Dolphins.
Last year 6 acorns start for Dolphins.
Next season maybe 10 or 12 acorns start for Dolphins.
Acorn belong on end of wang not starting lineup.

Craig M,

Never ONCE said Flynn would be Schaub. I was mocking how you kept saying he was this low round draft prospect so he wouldn't be any good. That is ignorant thinking. No Schaub hasn't won a playoff game. But are you telling me you wouldn't want him on your team? Please.

10 mil guaranteed for a starting QB is not much of a sacrifice when you look in PERSPECTIVE to what other teams spent in terms of money and draft picks. Houston gave 2 2nd round picks and a huge contract for Schaub, Arizona gave up a starting CB and a 2nd round pick, and a huge contract for Kolb. So in the big picture, Seattle gave up next to nothing for Flynn.

THE BIGGEST FAILURE WAS IRELAND NOT DRAFTING MALLET WHEN HE HAD THE CHANCE. THE REST WILL BE HISTORY.

Shula and Marino, heck, throw Jimmy in there too, should should get together and gather a group of investors and buy the damn team before it is too late and what's eft of the Dolphins' brand is permanently gone. Actually, we are already scraping the bottom of the crapper, so it is probaby too late as is. Ross, STICK TO REAL ESTATE bud! Ireland, go scout for a high school team. Better yet, get a job in the team's laundry room go wash some jock-straps.

Owner Ross, GM Ireland, Coach Philbin, and QB Matt Moore are in a room.

Ross looks like he is in a drugged daze. Ireland looks uncomfortable. Philbin looks like he longs to be some place else, but he is suppressing the giggles big time. Moore's hurt feelings are clear.

Ireland: Matt. I want you to know that you have been, and have always been, our Number One Choice as a starting QB.

Philbin nearly bites his tongue off to keep from laughing.

Moore: Really?

Ireland: Absolutely! You're the MAN!

Moore: OK. I was worried for a while. I can't wait to start throwing to Marshall.

Ireland: Well....how's your Mom doing?

Only 5 million to spend makes it hard to sign anyone except low tier players. They have not restructured 1 contract to get more money available Bell and Long would have been perfect opportunities to do so. Seattle did not overpay Flynn so if he was the Dolphins choice who knows what went wrong or what the plan is. So now they are going to bring in Garrard the man who did not want to come here last year.

who says the dolphins ``failed" or ``missed out" on flynn. if they had offered him equal money, he probably would have chosen miami (his father confirmed that there was a significant difference between the offers". the question is, did miami make the right decision to not offer him that type of money. only time will tell...like most of these decisions, it was a judgement call. the money flynn got is roughly the same as that being offered by the 49ers to alex smith. all things being equal (i.e. the same money), i would rather have smith. though not spectacular, he has won a playoff game and gone to the nfc championship game. this is not to say i would rather have either, but it is what it is at this point.

OMG Jon, we're doomed! We didn't get the 7th round pick....DOOMED!

He guess what....just like not getting Orton in a trade last year, maybe it's a good thing we didn't get Flynn. So tired of this team being middle of the pack, just out of reach of the top QBs in the draft. 6-10, 7-9, does NOTHING for us....NOTHING! Maybe if they fall flat on their face at 3-13, things finally change. Stop patching holes and putting bandaids on. Flynn at $26 mil is another bandaid....sorry.

very true jon. but lets not be mad about losing flynn. its just the whole body of work on ireland that pisses me off. what else does ireland need to destroy before ross finally fires his butt buddy

Jon,

Dont argue any point with CraigM. That guy barely sees past his own brow! LOL

Craig M,

Ok 3rd round pick he was. My bad

just draft a 1st round qb already and be done with it. Many people on this blog and others have been saying as much for years. Now all of a sudden it's all doom and gloom because we didn't sign Matt Flynn

EVERY BODY WENT TO CHECK THE SMITH SIGNING WITH THE DOLPHINS?JEZZ

PIN 78, ONLY SOURSE ARMANDO HASIS JASON YAYLOR WHO HAS DINNER ATARMANDOS MANSION EVER UNDAY NIGHT.

THE NECK

THE DENTEST

THE MACHANIC

THE CELLAR

I'm just praying we don't take Tanninghill....

A converted WR with only 18 starts and blew 5 4th quarter leads.

Sounds like the Dolphins type of QB

I WANT TO KNOW WHY THEY STARTED TO WIN AFTER THEY WERE 0 WINS AND 7 LOSSES. I GUESS THEY DIDNT LIKE US CHANTING SUCK FOR LUCK. WE WOULDNT HAVE TO BE GOING THREW ALL THIS CRAP. AND MAYBE WE WOULD'VE GOTTEN FISHER BY HAVING THE FIRST OVERALL PICK.

kyphinphan...Your right. The club never publicy said that Flynn was a priority. They never said Manning was a priority..They never say a thing..this is their right.

I know the media gets blamed for everything..don't believe everything you read..but come on.Every local paper, every national paper..show, pundit, grandmother, uncles brothers aunt..Knew that Manning was priority one, Flynn 2..You can try to ignore this because Ireland didn't publicly come out and make a speech, or Philbin didn't have a presser...But you want to tell me every reporter with inside sources had the wool pulled over their eyes by this huge Dolphin conspiracy that never had Flyyn as part of the plan?? Perhaps..I'm not buying it. If you want to thats fine..Not me, not for a second.

We're not doomed because of Flynn nor Manning coming here. We're doomed because the same dummys making fo decision over the past few years are still here and making the same typed failed decisions!

I WAS JOKING PEOPLE

Craig M,

You can't be that big of a homer and just blindly believe in everything Ireland does or the Dolphins do and defend them. If Flynn had signed for the exact same amount as he did with Seattle you would be on here saying he was a great pick up, this was all Ireland's plan, blah blah blah.

One thing IMO the price for Smith increased as he has the Fins against the wall.

It can be argued that the Miami Dolphins, a short time into the Future, will not be playing in the place they are doing so now.

I hate to say it because I been a Dolphins fan for almost 30 years but it's time to stop going to see this team play..it's time to show the front office we as fan mean business and will settle for way they are running this team. I'm done going and buying anything associated with the Miami Dolphins.. they will not be getting my money ANYMORE!!!!

I'm also a NY Yankees fan.. I did it to them when they cut me off from watching games when back in 2002 when they came out with their own cable channel. if I can do it to the greatest winnest sports franchise in sports history I can do it to the Miami Dolphins. this group are clueless. I'm f'ing DONE! I won't root for another team but I will not give them my money, PERIOD!

Do you hear that??? plop plop plop, It is the number of Dolphin bloggers jumping off bridges and high buildings. Relax, Flyyn wasn't the answer. If he was Philbin would know it. Maybe it is Alex Smith or maybe it is Moore.

The minute that Miami has success all you suiciders will jump right back on the bandwagon. flynn has no history and might be an 8 million dollar waste of money. I ain't payin that turkey 8 mil. Alex Smith? I might do that, he played very well last year for A WHOLE SEASON.

Instead of asking why the Dolphins don't land their man, maybe we should be asking why Armandos sources are always wrong. That's the question.

Because I have to guess here, and I'll do it because the sportwriters have proven that they know just about as much as we do,....is this: If you ask Ireland, he'll say, "we had Flynn graded out just about even with Matt Moore, and offered him a contract but didn't feel he was worth 26 million. We decided to stay with Matt, and continue to upgrade the roster in other areas, while keeping our options open in the draft for a quarterback."

Does that sound about right? And here's something else - even though Flynn had the edge with the new system, Moore has the edge with his familiarity with our receivers and fells comfortable behind our line, and has actually proven himself an entire season. He's not a crap shoot.

I need my own column, because frankly, the sh*t I'm saying is no less lame than these columns. The beat writers are clearly OUT OF THE LOOP.

The Football Gods will punish Harbaugh for meeting with Peyton Manning as Alex Smith will sign elsewhere and Peyton will follow suite leaving the 49ers QB less.

PRICELESS

Jon @ 6:59pm,

That's your opinion. I don't agree. For a team that is hard against the cap, with a lot of holes on the roster, playing Flynn $26 mil over 3 year, with $10 mil guaranteed if a lot to give up. I've said all along that I don't see him any better than Moore. They're the same IMO. So WHY are we paying extra money for the same guy? Makes no sense to me. You keep bringing up Houston and Arizona and I have no idea why...I couldn't care less about those teams. THIS is the team I care about. I'm sure Arizona fans thought they had it all figured out lat year getting Kolb (who was a second round pick). Think they'd like a do-over?

Jeff Ireland and his boss Ross, will carry the Fins to the dark while they stay there.

And so they want to fill the stadium? ...

Bastards!!!

Now I can see where you are coming from, but i have stated over the last week or so on these blogs I believed it was our plan to draft Tannehill.

No conspiracy or any such thing just mathematics. 15 mil cap space meant no starting qb pay.

We resign Solai further reducing cap space.

We need money to sign draft picks 4 or 5 mil

Realistically looking at these facts I can't see where we planned to get a starting qb in free agency. Yes we kicked the tires but in the end no money to pay one.
