« Dolphins QB search now in spin mode | Main | Overpaying Smith worse than missing on Flynn »

Dolphins fail to land Matt Flynn too (he's on to Seattle)

I am learning to stop underestimating the Dolphins' inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

After not getting a franchise QB last year, and not getting a player even they believed would compete for a starting job (Matt Moore was a surprise to them), and not drafting anyone, and pulling out of the Kyle Orton trade, and not getting Peyton Manning, now Miami is not getting Matt Flynn, either.

Flynn has agreed to a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

The Dolphins?

They're visiting with Alex Smith. They have another visit set up tomorrow with David Garrard.

How do you feel about that one?

I am not a big Flynn proponent. I'm not so sure he's going to be that good. I don't mind him going elsewhere. But the Dolphins do need somebody.

I'm sure the Dolphins will eventually portray this as having a plan (yeah, right) and sticking to that plan of not overspending for any player (including a QB). I'm sure they'll eventually get the message out that Flynn was a nice but not great option.

Sorry, but some facts simply get in the way. For example, someone else apparently believes Flynn is worth a good but not great contract. Seattle is paying approximately $8 million per season -- probably less when the actual numbers come in -- and that's not exactly breaking the bank for a starting QB. Even the $10 million signing bonus is modest for a QB. All indications are the Dolphins thought Flynn to be that potential starter but still couldn't pay him that?

Well then, why did the personnel and offensive staff spend nearly 40 hours of total tape time studying this guy, a figure I was told by a source was conservative? Otherwise, why would coach Joe Philbin be calling him throughout the free agency process to make sure Flynn knew he was a major Miami target? Otherwise why did the Dolphins immediately pivot to Flynn once they knew they'd been eliminated from the Manning derby? Otherwise why did they offer the kid a contract?

Something went wrong here. I was told three days ago Flynn was going to be Miami's guy. I was told it would take a significant screw up to fail to get him in a Dolphins uniform because the club believed he could win the starting job and Flynn liked the idea of playing for Philbin.

So what changed?

Obviously something.

Again, Matt Flynn is just a guy to me. He isn't guaranteed of doing anything great anywhere he goes. But the Dolphins continuing to pass on everybody is starting to raise eyebrows. It makes you wonder what's the problem.

Maybe it's Miami's inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

How can anyone defend Ross and Ireland? Are you kidding me? What a joke the dolphins are, nobody wants to come here.

NY "G"

Unlike the Dolphins, they are a well run organization and have a young QB ready to take over. Colin Kapernick

Last time I saw this type of incompatance was when I was running"ENRON"

does philbin have any say in this team or is ireland doing this to the team flynn would be a good pick up for this team rade down at 8 and get wide recievers for the team get rid of reggie bush for picks and get an o line what the

Another off-season, another year of FRUSTRATION. But,hell, its only been since 1999 that we had an actual STARTER at QB. Maybe next yr... I'll be back next spring to see if anything has happened ...

Puxatawney Phil

...The Dolphins are much like your friend who takes girls on dates, but cannot seal the deal..He tells you they are just friends..you know that this is B.S. He has no skills to pull any action..ends up watching Cinemax, while you scoop up on his "friend" with little effort..

take it for what it is anymore, but nfl network just said mia and smith are working on a contract now

What the hell was Solia thinking?? He could be in Denver with more money but he chose to stay here???

Hope Big Paulie made the right choice!

You have a point but that takes time unless you are an immediate success.

That's another thing,

How can Miami have no cap room, yet they have average talent at best and their best player (Wake) isn't even making a mil this year? What doesn't that say about the incompetence of Jeff Ireland?

I'm beginning to think the Dolphins did not have a serious plan to upgrage QB this year. If they did, then they would have cut players or restructed contracts so as to upgrade the talent on the roster.

Instead, in year 5 of a rebuilding project, they traded their best WR. They signed a value OG/OT instead of a young talent. They do not upgrade CB. The new CB will probably play safety. And the 'Plan A' for QB is now clear: David Gerrald or a similar player to back p the backup Moore.

Why, because the Dolphins are cheap. They do not want to rebuild completely and they also do not want to invest in trying to build a Chamption either. They probably have an Excel Worksheet showing just how bad they can be while get a certain amount of revenue.

The only way any of this is going to change is if starts at the top with ownership. The only way to get rid of Ross is to stop supporting the team so he loses enough money and is forced to sell the team. Do not buy season tickets, shirts, jerseys. Do not go to games or watch them on TV. The all mighty dollar speaks loudest. If he is losing cash maybe he will sell to a guy who loves football not the limelight and then smart decisions will be made.

Armando is not a beat writer. He's a columnist. And well within the loop, believe me.

Yeah Jon, don't talk to Craig, he's stupid. He never wanted Flynn to begin with! Are you kidding me, who wouldn't give a 7th round draft pick qb with little in game experience 10 million guaranteed! What a fool this Craig is, we really could have used a 10 million dollar bench warmer! You dont want to talk to him, I'm much more rationale. Hey what's your number, lets get together sometime and talk about how much we hate our team!!!!!!!

good question kyphinfan, and no one seems to have answered that yet. Where was the cap room supposed to come from for 9 million for one guy?

What went wrong is what I've been saying for two years now. Ross refuses to spend real money. Period. The lack of ticket sales has him skid dish. This is a terrible franchise with a terrible ownership. That's all there is to it. I'm afraid to tell everyone here it is only going to get worse. There is no reason at all for this team to be outbid for Flynn. Get used to jay Fiedler jr. Ehr Matt Moore. Unbelievable.

alex smith would not be a good singing at 8 mill per. i sure hope cbs and nfl network are wrong

Your'e obviously new on here because I've been saying for a long time now that Flynn AT THE RIGHT price is fine with me. $26 mil over 3 years with $10 mil guaranteed isn't 'the right price for me'. Good riddance! Guys should be applauding Ireland for sticking to their guns instead of slamming him. We have a good QB on the roster and we're not done yet.

I'll look for you Jon when Weeden's on the team and he's playing well or Tannehill's growing as a QB or Flynn's struggling in Seattle. You can me then that they didn't give 'much up'. They just took themselves out of the Tannehill derby. We'll see if that's a good thing or not.

I'll just go on record now. If Miami signs Alex Smith for a contract equal or greater to what Flynn received? I will rip Ireland from one end to another. If he gets him for less, that's a solid move.

Come on guys! For God's sake!! Flyn is more unproven than Moore,a 7th round pick!!He is not Tom Brady waiting to flourish. He is a NOBODY!!!!!!!! I am more ticked off that the 'fins have not been more of a player in free agency i.e. Winston, Manningham etc. I would like to see what Moore could do with a whole season. If Trent Dilfer can win a Super Bowl.....We don't need to overpay for another Feeley, Culpepper, Pennington etc. Draft a offensive line, qb, db and go get 'em.

Ireland and Ross will bring this Dolphins franchise down the gutter. Flynn deal wasnt that bad yet we could offer anything close to that. It's like Ireland holding his kock while other teams are trying to improve there team.
F Ireland
F Ross

This franchise is going down the before our eyes . Sad....

Free Agency is WILDLY OVERRATED. Its just a week or two in March for fanbases drool over spending too much money on mediocre players. The draft, however, is what builds franchises and defines leagacies.

That's another thing,

How can Miami have no cap room, yet they have average talent at best and their best player (Wake) isn't even making a mil this year? What doesn't that say about the incompetence of Jeff Ireland?

Posted by: Jon
Yes, exactly. This is one of the most important areas that is overlooked by many. With the kind of spending to cap, then Dolphins should have an elite QB, WR, TE, DE, LB, CB, and OL.

tannehill derby, lol pretty sure thats a one team race, ireland racing against himself

Samantha, right on the money, love your posts today.

Fair enough Craig M,

And for the record I like Weeden a lot as long as it's not a 1st round selection. Tannehill? He's another Blaine Gabbert IMO and would be a reach at 8. But if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

7th round draft pick. 7th round.

At least Alex Smith is a first rounder. I don't expect him to be signed, but if he was, I'd have no problem with it because at least we'd have our shot with a 1st rounder. We haven't had a first rounder. Tannehill is a possibility, and even Weeden.

agree jon 100 percent

I'd be surprised if the Dolphins are in the Tannehil or Weedon Derby either.

They haven't done anything we've predicted yet.

Whoo hoo! We all knew it was going to happen. "Bag it for Barkley" in 2012!

Yeah Samantha I don't expect Alex Smith to be signed either he will be looking for more money than we have, but as Craig said about Flynn for the right price it would be a good signing.

Calm down, Manning is out, Flynn is possibly A.J. Feely all over again. Smith is just mad and I don't like him anyway. I like the fact we are not dropping our manties and paying through the nose for these guys. The phins will take a QB in the 2nd round if they don't take T-Hill which I don't think they will. Either Moore, Garrard, Hasselback or maybe McNabb, I know you don't want to hear this... will be someones mentor for a season or two at the most. I think we are going pass rusher first round becasue with a weaker schedule this season our D can keep us around. Remeber our new coachs MO is he builds through the draft. I like it and still think we could content this season with the right vet QB that is familiar with the WC offense. If we can make the post season we have a shot. My 2 cents.

Jon @7:14pm,

Now you're making MORE sense. Again, I'm fine with Smith but he's not the answer either. Don't give him too much money. Add him if you want but they still need that kid.

I really think it might be time for DOLFANS to move on like everyone else in the NFL seems to be doing to our Fish.

There are NO EXCUSES for the inability of our ownership and management to make blunder after blunder since the new NFL year began.

How does it feel to be the "butt" of all jokes around the leauge.

And to say the Dolphins have "no money" is a bold-face lie. What happened to the $15-million we were under the cap before Brandon Marshall was traded?

I think it's Stephen Ross being "cheap" and his "yes man" Jeff Ireland carrying out his wishes.

I am more than disgusted by this whole mess. We aren't getting any better --- only worse.

I just feel back for Joe Philben decided to take this job. He deserve better!!!!

mcnaab, lol ive heard it all now

kyphin..Real good post@ 7:08..

The only problem, and this is where we may disagree about Tannehill(he isn't my favorite..this is besides the point)..I think that We will have to trade up to get him if we REALLY want him.. Will we be able to risk, or bet that Cleveland will pass on him? If Tannehill is really our guy, wouldn't we be forced to trade up for him? At that point the 15 million number is out the window, plus we throw away picks to move up..If we have to trade up, even if we luck out and Tannehill lands at 8..15 million is gone signing him. sure we get our first round guy.(Again this isn't about my opinion of him..I think he is a late first, early second round prospect)But the cost is questionable..

I know there are a bunch of scenarios that involve other quarterbacks. Both free agents, picks, and Matt Moore..I just wanted to adress my opinion of Tannehill as an option.

We are still in good shape. I'm guessing the Dolphins didn't want to pay that much for Flynn, because he is not worth what the Seahawks paid for him. He is undersized anyway.

Looking forward to the draft.

I wouldn't buy a Dolphin ticket if they were on sale, paying me for going to the game. These guys are IDIOTS! Jeff Ireland is a certified IDIOT and Ross is the leader of the IDIOT nation.

Exactly Dusty

I'm just waiting for someone to bring up the Favre/Shermen connection lol

David Garrard -- a Dolphin?

You better get excited now because this probably will happen. I would have felt better if Miami decided after all this time to give Brady Quinn a shot.

Come on ... you can't honestly believe that David Garrard will make the Dolphins better.

Seattle could keep Flynn for that money.

Poor Mando-- wah wah wah, "they told me this, then they told me that -- they LIED to me - wah wah boo hoo hoo. You don't know any more than the rest of us -- accept it! Nobody has a clue what these clowns will do. Once upon a time, we coulda had Drew Brees, we coulda had Matt Ryan. Now, Tannehill is our best remaining option. If we're going to rebuild (again) let's take our chances with a young QB because Smith and Garrard are GARBAGE!

quinn already signed

If Ireland had balls he should of traded up for RG3.

"Armando is not a beat writer. He's a columnist. And well within the loop, believe me."

Really? Because his source said it was a lock. Just like we were told Manning was a lock. If his source told him accurate information, what it would have been is this: "Miami is very interested in Matt Flynn, for the right price." Because THAT is what the team's position was, obviously. Otherwise he'd be signed.

yup clue, that was the right dec and he blew cause they loved a 36 year old with a broken neck

i would settle for randy meuller back. over this mess. looks like to me thay are working to make this franchise worse.

I'm very much looking forward to the Draft.
Tannehill or Weeden?
Most of Us were very vocal against Manning and Flynn.I'll assumE We feel the same way about Alex Smith and Garrard.
Let's built through the Draft. Our players.NO MORE RETREADS!

I heard Ryan Leaf is available. Kind of star power ross is looking for

Guys don't take the 49ers thing too lightly. As in nobody cares about Smith out there. If Smith signs with another team and San Fran misses out on Manning fans AND players will be screaming. That team last year was tight and they all respected one another and believed. They did it together with Smith and you can question his reg season games in an easy division (they beat some good teams too!) But what is your answer for how he did in the playoffs? Anyone watch the championship game against one of the top 3 DEFENSES? Smith was awesome, couldn't believe how well he did.

Not to mention he was a first pick and has had 5 different offensive coordinators and three different coaches. This is what San Fran fans talk about. They were so happy at the end of the season and finally saw Alex as their qb of the future.

Fast forward a month and SF goes behind his back, doesn't land Manning, and then loses Smith on top of that? Oh boy, they better have a plan! This is getting good.

One reason the Phins are so careful on price is the same reason they signed Columbo last year: they are cheap.

They cannot manage the salary cap with a 6-10 team that has not a single elite playmaker.

It will take new management and at least three to four years to rebuild from the 5-year rebuilding project that is even now ongoing.

At this point, the concern should be that Ireland/Ross seem to be content doing NOTHING meaningful to improve this team this offseason. It's like they didn't get the memo that FA was about to start. And never mind the QB misses, Ireland should have started clearing cap space MONTHS AGO. He's done nothing but make our offense worse. He's walking around looking for acorns on the ground. You can't shop for filet mignon on a ground beef budget you nitwits.

Well, he just hasn't find out yet.

phins 78 and harbaugh will laugh as they dominate the west again

The fact that only Seattle went after Flynn says a lot about the guy. Philbin knew him best and they did not go hard after him. To me that's enough to understand that he was not the answer and we'll do better in the long run.
Miami will be a better franchise when we start drafting well, not by overpaying in free agency.
Focus on a WR in round 1 (trading down and getting Floyd or Wright) and a QB in Rd 2 (Cousins, perhaps). Then draft for value the rest of the way...

We're not doomed because of Flynn nor Manning coming here. We're doomed because the same dummys making fo decision over the past few years are still here and making the same typed failed decisions!

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | March 18, 2012 at 07:04 PM

Right on, YG. I'd also add that Smith and Garrard were NEVER a part of the off season plan. Smith only came to focus with the Manning to SF development in days. It's only week 2 of the new season and they're already going to the bottom of the list. The fact that they're scrambling to bring Smith and Garrard in shows either a) their plan was flawed; b) they're risk-averse and cheap; c) they're scrambling in case Plan C: landing Tannehill doesn't pan out; d) they're grossly incompetent.

If we fans are thinking this, then surely FAs are thinking likewise. Seriously, how would players and coaches in the league reacted if Dolphins had been bold and gone all out for RG3, or taken a slightly greater risk with Flynn than Seattle? But they didn't. Instead they pull a head scratcher like trading Marshalls for acorn picks! It was also reported that Marshall welcomed the idea of being traded if they won't land a premier QB. And look what happened. No wonder star coaches and talents had second thoughts about joining this team when Ross or Ireland came calling them.
