« Dolphins QB search now in spin mode | Main | Overpaying Smith worse than missing on Flynn »

Dolphins fail to land Matt Flynn too (he's on to Seattle)

I am learning to stop underestimating the Dolphins' inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

After not getting a franchise QB last year, and not getting a player even they believed would compete for a starting job (Matt Moore was a surprise to them), and not drafting anyone, and pulling out of the Kyle Orton trade, and not getting Peyton Manning, now Miami is not getting Matt Flynn, either.

Flynn has agreed to a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

The Dolphins?

They're visiting with Alex Smith. They have another visit set up tomorrow with David Garrard.

How do you feel about that one?

I am not a big Flynn proponent. I'm not so sure he's going to be that good. I don't mind him going elsewhere. But the Dolphins do need somebody.

I'm sure the Dolphins will eventually portray this as having a plan (yeah, right) and sticking to that plan of not overspending for any player (including a QB). I'm sure they'll eventually get the message out that Flynn was a nice but not great option.

Sorry, but some facts simply get in the way. For example, someone else apparently believes Flynn is worth a good but not great contract. Seattle is paying approximately $8 million per season -- probably less when the actual numbers come in -- and that's not exactly breaking the bank for a starting QB. Even the $10 million signing bonus is modest for a QB. All indications are the Dolphins thought Flynn to be that potential starter but still couldn't pay him that?

Well then, why did the personnel and offensive staff spend nearly 40 hours of total tape time studying this guy, a figure I was told by a source was conservative? Otherwise, why would coach Joe Philbin be calling him throughout the free agency process to make sure Flynn knew he was a major Miami target? Otherwise why did the Dolphins immediately pivot to Flynn once they knew they'd been eliminated from the Manning derby? Otherwise why did they offer the kid a contract?

Something went wrong here. I was told three days ago Flynn was going to be Miami's guy. I was told it would take a significant screw up to fail to get him in a Dolphins uniform because the club believed he could win the starting job and Flynn liked the idea of playing for Philbin.

So what changed?

Obviously something.

Again, Matt Flynn is just a guy to me. He isn't guaranteed of doing anything great anywhere he goes. But the Dolphins continuing to pass on everybody is starting to raise eyebrows. It makes you wonder what's the problem.

Maybe it's Miami's inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

What in the friggin' world is going on in this front office?? Do Ireland & Ross not bathe?

Players are avoiding this team like they would the plague.

Just when you think this organization couldn't sink any lower, they do (again... and again... and again..).

Man It's a dark day to be a Dolphins fan... Sell the team Ross... Show Ireland to the unemployment line... Time to continue the re-building!!

Flynn's base contract is just $19 million with $5 million more available through incentives. It appears the remaining $2 million could be had via "unlikely to be earned" incentives. Either way, it's a much more team-friendly deal than the Cardinals gave Kevin Kolb last offseason. Even if the full "guarantee" is only $2 million less. If both Flynn and Kolb emerged as viable starting quarterbacks, the Seahawks would be paying Flynn much less than the Cardinals would for Kolb.

Russ Lande is tweeting that Flynn is better than Kolb, which isn't saying much. But he likes his footwork and release, saying he'll be good. He did say however, that Miami NOT going all out for Flynn is a "concern" as to his upside. He also said there there was some big money thrown at unproven QB's which turned out disastrous, so that's why Flynn's money is a little less than it actually would be, and and didn't have a lot of suitors.

Look on the bright side, we still have something all the other franchises in the NFL don't have: Club Liv.

phins 78 and harbaugh will laugh as they dominate the west again

The real joy would be not having to read your lame posts.

I simply never thought this off-season could be as bad as this!!!

Posted by: ALoco | March 18, 2012 at 07:36 PM

ALoco how are things in Massastupids?

Anyone on this blog giving this GM and front office any credit should stick your head in a toilet and flush!!

Aloco I've never posted under another name. Except maybe Sam instead of Samantha.

Well guess they didn't think Flynn was worth it, I do like Alex Smith

I dislike Ross just as much if not more then anyone on here. But I don't think this is his doing. By this, I mean this FA period. The Manning thing was partially his doing, Jeff Fisher was def his doing because of last year's fiasco with Harbaugh. But as far as not landing Flynn or being able to obtain RGIII,and trading Marshall, I would venture a guess that he is livid right now with Ireland. However, he has no one to blame but himself. You can't expect different results from someone who does the same things over and over again.

Maybe they just decided it wasn't worth giving that kind of money to a guy that is only marginally better than Matt Moore.

KJ be our guest. Go ahead and root for another team, you can always jump back on the band wagon if/when they start winning. Been a fan for over 30 years and was able to watch 20 years of excellent football with Shula, Im not going anywhere.

Its funny that a team like the Bills who have never won a super bowl, or the hawks, or the cards,, or the freakin browns fans who had no team for years because they moved to MD, are die hard fans after decades of horrible decisions yet Dolphins fans are suggesting jumping ship after a decade of mediocrity. What does that say about the Miami fan base. Tells me we have a lot of phonies. So sad.

Russ says if Alex is signed, he has only a 50/50 chance of beating out Matt Moore. So that says a lot for Moore, I think.

Ok Aloco what is the dentist about?

$26 million for FLynn was wayyy to much. How's Kolb doing in Arizona? Or Cassell in KC? How'd Feeley do in Miami? Throwing big bucks at backup quarterbacks rarely works well. Remember when Marino got hurt and Scott Mitchell looked awesome? How'd he do in Detroit?

Would've liked to test Flynn, but not for $26 million.

Flynn was not a sure upgrade over Moore but there were a few players out there that were a sure thing to make a difference, like Eric Winston, Carl Nicks, Ben Grubbs, and the player I wanted most, Mario Williams. We could of used some of the money for Paul Solai on M.Williams. Besides a QB we need to win the war in the trenches.

Dolfan Rick,

I'm just guessing, but it probably has something to do with Andrew Luck's HUGE mouth/teeth. It's scary looking

Sports talk radio is going to be epic tomorrow...

Sedano and Lebatard are going to going nuts.

Armando needs to get rid of Perkins from his show...He always is defending the front office which has been terrible.

Thanks Jon

The Phins need to go get Ryan Tannehill. He has been the best of the options since they won a game and lost out on Luck. That whole "Suck for Luck" thing doesn't look so bad now does it? Can you even come up with 32 (1 per team) franchise quarterbacks in the history of the NFL? I can't. That's why the Colts were genius in what they did. Nobody will ever convence me they didn't blow all those games on purpose. If the Phins don't draft Tannehill, I can't say I will stop being a fan. I can't do that but I may try watching another team every week.
I wouldn't have a hard time becoming a Ravens fan. I love Ray Lewis and Ed Reed anyway. GO 'CANES!

Maybe just let some of the sediment settle before you start crying about seeing the bottom.

Don't worry. All will be well when we draft a guard with the 8th pick in the first round and follow that up with a defensive end in round 2, a cornerback and defensive tackle in round 3, a fullback in round 4, a running back in round 5, a wide receiver in round 6, and a quarterback in round 7.

" the coaches,the staff-they were fantastic "....
so we have a deduction here: Ireland is an a** hole in dealing with future players, his way and only his way, is black or white never grey

God I hope so dusty. That division sucks, not a big secret there. But facts are facts, Smith is a hero out there after the Championship game so fans won't be happy with losing him and how it all may go down.

And the offensive players are expecting their leader back, believe me they were't talking about the need to upgrade the qb position after the season. Im saying this could effect team chemistry a lot. They will make the playoffs because there is nobody to stop them from winning the division. But if they dont have Smith and sign,,,ummmmmm whos gonna be left, Tebow? Then I bet you anything they lose in the first round. I would be willing to put money on that! :)

will y'all quit your whining lets see who we draft before you abandon ship the team still isn't that bad. Now everyone......In Hale........ Exhale. In MOORE I TRUST

So not signing a 7th round pick with 2 starts in a 4 year career dooms this franchise? Seriously?
History tells us that it's a mistake to pay top dollars to back-up QBs just because they have 2 good games. Have we forgotten AJ Feely, Kevin Kolb, Scott Mitchell, Jay Fiedler and a long list of etc?

Actually at this point the best choice might be to bring in Vince Young. With our lack of explosiveness at wide receiver, and the fact that we will not be drafting one in the top rounds, we might be well served to basically go to an option style attack with a highly mobile quarterback to complement our running game.

I am embarrassed to be a Dolphin fan. They won't get Tannehill in the draft either. I like Moore, but when we hold up all that cash for a QB and miserably FAIL in every way and give up Marshall (he was an idiot anyways) and let the Patriots sign Royal? WTF?!?!?!

Mario Williams is overrated and will disappear in Buffalo. He hasn't been able to play a full season in 3 years and has good but not dominating stats.

Yeah go ahead and get tannehill. A suck a@@ qb for a suck a@# team. Its all coming together now. This is irelands final year of his contract and his plan was to totally fu#k this team up. He did suceed at something!

Seriously, it's time for some accountability and transparency out of this front office. Unless they are going for Tannehill and taking their chances developing him, this makes no sense. The price was reasonable for a starting QB. Nice job Jeffey!

The Draft:

Round 1 - Ireland picks Andrew Luck, who has, of course, already been drafted by the Colts. League orders Dolphins for forfeit the pick.
Round 2 - OL
Round 3 - DT
Round 3 - FB
Round 4 - ILB
Round 5 - OL
Round 6 - K
Round 7 - RB

Philbin calls Sparano to use his trademarked "Fist Pumps for Field Goals" dance.

Ross will not spend real money. Hasn't since he's been here. It's all acorns. LOL. He didn't last year and won't this year. I heard a report that they were gussing that it was a difference of 4 million on nfl network for Flynn. Ross puts the extra cap space in his pocket. He's a businessman first and foremost.

Ok Aloco what is the dentist about?

No Gerrard please!!!!! Stick with Moore. No choice now. And yes Tannehill is the target unless they would've gotten lucky with the others, on the cheap!! Well they didn't.

A significant screw up? Really? Have you not been covering this franchise since Ross & Ireland took over the franchise and seem almost hellbent in running it into the ground? Atleast the captain of the Titanic attempted to steer clear of the icebergs, but Thing 1 & Thing 2, seem to merely attempt to plow into every single fk up they possibly can.
It was my hope that Philbin would know whether or not this player was worth what he might be asking. It was my hope that if we missed out on him, it would be because Philbin said he wasn't worth it, and not ready. Unfortunately, I'm a realist and I know the team I've supported for 31 years is run by a pair of clueless fkn clowns who know as much about running a franchise as my 2 year old daughter does.
Therefore I would have to think that Philbin wanted Flynn, but was overruled by the blundering idiots he has to answer to.....again forcing all of us who support this team to wonder WHY in God's name we continue to support them, when they give us nothing but heartbreak & disappoint all throughout the year, weather it's losing to the lousy Cleveland Browns during the regular season, or attempting to woo top name coaches/free agent players, and striking out more times than Ryan Howard in a critical situation!!
The Miami Dolphins are a joke. I think it's time to find a new team.

How can the fins be tight on the salary cap if they only have 2 pro bowl players on the team???

At least I am reading some good posts tonight, Craig, DZ Nuts and Samantha. Right on! Do not overpay for Flynn, do not sign Smith, neither are an upgrade to Moore. The best moves are the ones you DON'T make often times and unfortunately we were more than Matt Flynn away from winning a Super Bowl. David Gerrard will back up Moore, we will trade down in the draft to get best players avaIable, pass rusher, TE, CB, OL possibly QB and WR. Very seldom does a new coaching staff come in and win a Super Bowl, changes needed to be made and it takes time. Remember what coach Philbin said about building a long term competitive team, through the draft. We are rebuilding people, get used to the idea and those who can't deal with that, sorry to see you go. I for one want to give this staff a chance to coach em up and weed em out. Brandon Marshall example one, not overpaying for Matt Flynn, example two, we didn't lose out on these guys, we chose not to pay them, KUDOS to Ireland and Co.

I'm just curious. Will this team EVER fill a need? EVER?

Let's play a game Dolphans: Who is the worst GM in NFL History? If you said Irieland you're Right! Thanks for playing WTF is going on!

Somebody posted as Henne earlier: Miss Me Yet? The answer is NO, now go backup that guy they drafted last year, you are part reason we are in this mess!

I believe that Ross wants to destroy the fan base and then sell the majority of the team to an LA owner. That way he can be part of the "star" scene.Remember he lives in NY - why would he want a good dolphin team. His background is real estate- so eventually this team will be in LA.

I am about to join the legions of insanely petulant, jackass, Ireland-hating, fin-fans. Ireland needs to be fired. What an off season. Fisher gives us the finger, Manning didn't want to talk to us, our best player is traded for chump change, and they blow the Flynn signing. I'd fire Ireland RIGHT NOW if I was Ross. This organization has no respect anymore. No one wants to be a part of it.

A quick Survey guys, Who here says Ireland/ Ross has improved this team from the 2008 team?.?

Why come here to say you are going to a new team?? Just shut up about it and find your new teams website and comment there. Seriously, if your mad and want to gripe and whine then whatever. But if you are not going to be a fan anymore then just peace out and shut up about it.

After a dozen years plus of this nonsense, I'm just about done with this team. The biggest mistake Miami ever did was to bring Parcells/Ireland to this organization and that is saying a lot given Wanny, Saban, and Cameron.

Many writers have been saying that the Dolphins have been mismanaged for years and the front office is a major problem.

The Saints, Lions, and 49ers got better. Even the Jets have made it to 2 AFC Championship games. But the Dolphins cannot even find any All Pros outside of Long and Wake in the past four offseasons. Not a single skill position (QB, WR, TE, DE, or CB) that would be considered elite.

Do you guys think they will get new couches in Club Liv this year?

Armando you really are a nasty, bitter pain in the arse- it's no wonder nobody with the Dolphins can stand to have anything to do with you.

It is, to say the least, demoralizing. It's going on 3 full years of this sh*t now. This team is the laughingstock of the league. No player in its right mind would come here unless the two stooges vastly overpay. I can't express in words how frustrating this ownership is. I'm just plum worn out.

We need to run that cheap SOB Ross out of town along with his waterboy Ireland and rookie coach Philbin. Anyone that spends a dime on these jokers nedds their head examined. Hit Ross in the pocketbook till he sells the team to a football guy.

Jeff Ireland and Joe Philbin better pra y Flynn is a bust in Seattle because their careers are on the line.
I hope they were not playing chicken with Flynn to bring down the asking price or Miami really did not liking Flynn enough to settle on him.

Better puke up the money for Alex Smith or Garrard will be the big franchise QB upgrade that was priority one.

I have to believe or I want to believe that Philbin put the lavish on this signing. He had to. He had to tell management that Flynn wasn't worth price. That could be the only explanation. Right???????????

While I understand why a GM would not overpay for a particular player, it seems like the Dolphins have vastly overpaid for much of their 6-10 roster.

They have two All Pros and not a single elite skill position player. Now that is OVERPAYING.

Alex Smith, 7 years starter or Matt Flynn 2 game starter (games that didn't mean anything to either team playing) Alex would be my choice and I'm sure Ireland thinks the same thing. If you are going to pay a QB 26 mil over 3 years, go with the player that has played more than 2 games in 4 seasons. Remember he was a 7th round draft pick for a reason.

3rd update:
Finally somebody is offering constructive ideas. Philbin is making the decisions after Ross screwed up again w/Peyton. Alex Smith is better than all the quarterbacks except a healthy Peyton in free agency and I'll bet we'll sign him and stick it to Harbaugh. Thanks to the new salary cap agreement, Philbin's style is perfect - Draft and build, don't overspend on free agents.
Keeping in mind Oline and Inside Linebacker are deep this draft, draft as follows:

1st pick: DB - Claiborne, DE - Coples or Ingram.
2nd: WR - Stephen hill (Think Megatron)
3rd: LaMichael James will probably drop 'cause of size (Think a young Bush) or best OT available
4rd: Best OT or Inside linebacker available

Green Bay offense here we come!

The Fins need to move out of town. Or join the Arena league. They're just horrible with zero future.
