« Dolphins QB search now in spin mode | Main | Overpaying Smith worse than missing on Flynn »

Dolphins fail to land Matt Flynn too (he's on to Seattle)

I am learning to stop underestimating the Dolphins' inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

After not getting a franchise QB last year, and not getting a player even they believed would compete for a starting job (Matt Moore was a surprise to them), and not drafting anyone, and pulling out of the Kyle Orton trade, and not getting Peyton Manning, now Miami is not getting Matt Flynn, either.

Flynn has agreed to a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

The Dolphins?

They're visiting with Alex Smith. They have another visit set up tomorrow with David Garrard.

How do you feel about that one?

I am not a big Flynn proponent. I'm not so sure he's going to be that good. I don't mind him going elsewhere. But the Dolphins do need somebody.

I'm sure the Dolphins will eventually portray this as having a plan (yeah, right) and sticking to that plan of not overspending for any player (including a QB). I'm sure they'll eventually get the message out that Flynn was a nice but not great option.

Sorry, but some facts simply get in the way. For example, someone else apparently believes Flynn is worth a good but not great contract. Seattle is paying approximately $8 million per season -- probably less when the actual numbers come in -- and that's not exactly breaking the bank for a starting QB. Even the $10 million signing bonus is modest for a QB. All indications are the Dolphins thought Flynn to be that potential starter but still couldn't pay him that?

Well then, why did the personnel and offensive staff spend nearly 40 hours of total tape time studying this guy, a figure I was told by a source was conservative? Otherwise, why would coach Joe Philbin be calling him throughout the free agency process to make sure Flynn knew he was a major Miami target? Otherwise why did the Dolphins immediately pivot to Flynn once they knew they'd been eliminated from the Manning derby? Otherwise why did they offer the kid a contract?

Something went wrong here. I was told three days ago Flynn was going to be Miami's guy. I was told it would take a significant screw up to fail to get him in a Dolphins uniform because the club believed he could win the starting job and Flynn liked the idea of playing for Philbin.

So what changed?

Obviously something.

Again, Matt Flynn is just a guy to me. He isn't guaranteed of doing anything great anywhere he goes. But the Dolphins continuing to pass on everybody is starting to raise eyebrows. It makes you wonder what's the problem.

Maybe it's Miami's inability to land a quarterback. Any quarterback.

Just read a report that the Dolphins are negociating with Alyx Smith and are close to getting it done...wow.

I guess Moore is QB by de factor next year then., But Moore is more inconstance them my wife during that time of the month, If you guys Know what I'am saying.

There is good news for all the cry babies and that is if we are as bad as they say we will get a top draft pick next year when there are several high rated QB to be pick, however, we won't be that bad, so relax, you can still cry next year. Bill

Here is what I think our next step is: If we can somehow keep the bottle service as excellent as it has been, all Club Liv needs is perhaps a subtle change in decor to attract the higher end clientele. Then, and only then, we can clearly say we have the best Club Liv in the NFL.

I don't think Philbin thought that Flynn wasn't worth that kind of money.

I say boycott the games until Ross is forced to sell the team. It is criminal what he's done to one of the most respected football organizations. I'm disgusted!

Good for the fish not paying a former 7th rounder with 2 games under his belt 8 million.I am fine with Matt Moore and drafting a QB.There will be more vet cuts in the coming months. They are in this position because of past overspending.Lets hope they can redo Dansby's contract.

LMAO @ Dolphan 1990

The report on Alex Smith is on the Denver Post. It says the Dolphins willl give him a multi-year deal worth 8 million a year.

I mean, we've been saying this over and over again today. Forget impact FAs , we just don't have the $ for them. Reality. Stark, surprising? Yes.

You all wanted a first round QB on this roster and you will get one that was a 1st overall pick! Now quit your complaining!!

Rick I hope it wasn't one of Armandos sources that you heard that from. But seriously, you have a link to that?

Question is if they couldnt afford to give Flynn a contract, how did they expect to sign Peyton? This means they wasted their time meeting with and worrying about Peyton...

Thanks Rick.

I'm not shedding tears over Manning or Flynn.

I'd rather start Moore and see them draft a QB.

Been saying that...I just hope they don't sign Garrard.

I want our new QB to be a draft pick.

Again(oh, Lord), Philbin has little impact on what Ireland finally decides.

Mando, you posted a blog about how it was just as important to get him at the right price, now you criticize for not overpaying. You have been extremely negative thoughout this whole process; preached about how Manning was the wrong answer, then complain when we don't get him. You're obviously biased AGAINST the Dolphins. I'm done reading the Herald.

Absolutely freaking disgusting.

Stephen Ross and/or Jeff Ireland are making it harder every year to support this team.

And so help me God, if they go and sign Tim Tebow...no.

The whole NFL is laughing at us. This is pathetic.

"According to the Denver Post, the Dolphins are currently negotiating a contract with free agent Alex Smith that would pay him $8 million annually."

Hmmm....We're willing to pay Alex Smith but not Flynn. I know the Dolphins are getting bashed locally & nationally but IF they get Smith then everyone needs to shut the f#ck up. If we don't get Smith then I'll be convinced that the Dolphins have no chance to be good until they fire Ireland.

It's not about the money. Flynn took one look at this train wreck of a franchise & got as far away as possible (literally). Look at us - we have half an O line, no receivers or tight end, an incompetant GM & an untrustworthy, cluelss owner. The word in the league must be what a disaster the fins are - nobody wants to play or coach here. I used to be amused by this horror but today it just makes me sick!

At least Alex Smith knows how to play without WR!!!!!

If they sign Smith at the reported 8MIL per year, then trade Moore for whatever pick is possible and draft a rookie in the third or fourth.

Chad Henne was better than everyone they have talked to except Peyton. Ross is an @ss and is responsible for all this BS. Sometimes you need to value what you have. Now they will offer Alex Smith 8 or 9 mill a year in a reach and he will turn them down to return to San Francisco. All these problems start and stop with Ross and his coach bungling both last year and this offseason.

Here is the link Phins:

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_20202530/qb-alex-smith-negotiating-dolphins-throw-manning-waiting

They eill not sign smith either. Manning will go to den or tenn, and smith will resign with san fran. Their qb will be hasselbeck.

Armando, do you really expect to have it both ways?

You post that getting Flynn "at the right price is as important as signing him". THEN write a blog trashing the Dolphins because they didn't get him because they did not deem it the 'right price' (as laid out by Ireland.)

Take a side and stick with it! There is plenty of things you can write about without having to create another blog entry by playing both sides.

"Question is if they couldnt afford to give Flynn a contract, how did they expect to sign Peyton? This means they wasted their time meeting with and worrying about Peyton..."

Gkallos,

And now we're offering Smith $8 Million a year. Ireland must have felt that Flynn wasn't worth the money. Maybe he's right. The guy has had two career starts. The people who are saying we couldn't afford Flynn & couldn't have made room for him under the cap are talking out of their a##es.

That being said, if the Dolphins sign Smith or Garrard to a big contract THEN there is reason for outrage.

The main reason they can't land anyone is incompetency at the top. The owner is not a football guy and he has put all his faith in a Ireland, who is absolutely clueless. That is why the fins lost Fisher, Manning and now Flynn and made no attempt to trade for RGIII. Ross should have cleaned house like Irsay. Ireland is your problem.

At best, we can sign a lower 1st rd or 2nd to 3rd rd. rookie. Pray hard.

Tom Brady: Have you seen the Dolphins in free agency?
Belicheat: Nods. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Brady: Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Any Dolphin fan with an once of self-respect left should gather up their rotten produce dump it at the entry of Dolphin facility.

I mean let's be honest. The night games at Club Liv in the stadium are incredible because of the atmosphere. There is just something about going to a club in the afternoon that is off-pudding IMHO. So I think what we need to do is have that full bar restocked every 15 minutes to keep those high end clients happy because most won't want to be there at 3 in the afternoon anyways. Just stating my opinion, don't shoot the messenger!

Ireland is not the problem with drafting he actually has done a good job at that. Even free agents he is above average. Problem is Ross needs to stop meddling he single handedly has made dolphins laughing stock of football. No wonder Marino does not want a front office position with this Nutcase running the show. My guess is Jacory Harris will be a dolphin next year. By the way to the idiots that dumped on Henne. He ran Spread and West Coast offense in High School as a 4 year starter. Started 4 years and Michigan including outplaying Vince Young and Tim Teabow in bowl games.

THE FINS ARE GARBAGE

Saw it Rick, very interesting. If Miami somehow signs Smith I will be shocked. I like the kid more than some others in here and would love to stick it to Harbaugh, Im sure Ross would too. That would leave SF drafting a rookie or picking up anothers cast off from a Peyton signing. That means Hasslebeck, Weeden, Osweiller or Tebow. The only Qb I see making it work out there is Hasslebeck.

And Tebow disciples don't get your hopes up. Denver post reporting the market for a Tebow trade has skyrocketed. Denver signs Manning, theyre going to want something good in return for Tebow and we wont be in the running. Sorry for the bad news.

That is the report in the denver post. Dolphins smith eorking on multi year desl that would pay him 8 mill a year.

I have been a dolphin fan for 30 years now,I live in Virginia and have gone to watch them play several times over the years.Usually road games close to home.I went to a game in Miami for the first time 6 years ago and had a great time even though they lost to Pats. Since then I have talked about going back to Miami every year to see another game there, but every year it seems less likely. Our team organization is so embarrasing I'd feel guilty handing over money for tickets.Cap strapped every year and not competitive, cheap when it comes to signing play makers, and unable to sell the franchise as a place that players should want to be. Your losing life long Dolphin fans Stephen Ross, you have no credibility in the N.F.L. and you never will now,cut the cord and sell this team, nice try but it's over.

Well back to not caring about football for a whole season again. Flynn was for REAL. Had more of the "it" factor than any qb who has started for us.

Calm down!

We might be going into the season with Moore, who is pretty good. But we won't know until this is over. Miami knows the MOST about these QB's and they have the advantage. Philbin knows Flynn. Sherman knows Tannehill. And now they're feeling Alex Smith out. If they didn't pull the trigger on Flynn then somebody didn't think he was good enough, or for that money not that different from Matt Moore. Let's wait and see what happens.

Now Flynn says that the Coaches in Seattle made up his mind. How bout here you fukk, you know, Philbin... Fukk you.

"I guess Moore is QB by de factor next year then., But Moore is more inconstance them my wife during that time of the month.

If you guys Know what I'am saying."

I don't even think you know what you're saying.

If we passed on Flynn b/c we think we're going to get Alex Smith then how could anyone fault Ireland??? We're talking about a starting QB that just went 13-3 w/o legitimate WR's vs. a backup that started two games in 4 years on a team with one of the best offenses in the NFL. If we don't get Alex Smith then it's a different story.

Let's go get Leinart! He could be good...

Henne was Miami's best option and always has been. The article merely says Smith will command a contract of 8 million a year. This was already known and is the offer the 49ers had on the table. Miami will not pay Smith 8 million a year and Smith will continue to be a 49er. The Dolphins will overpay for Garrard and sign him. He and Moore will compete and the Dolphins will suddenly realize that Henne was the best option over all of these guys. After losing several games, Miami will trade 2 1's to Jacksonville to get Henne back as their starter.

Does anyone know why the Denver Post has news on the Dolphins negotiating with Smith but no one at this paper, IN MIAMI, hasn't even mentioned it? I guess their sources are too busy covering their azzes to be bothered with breaking news.

Samantha,

Agreed. People need to see how this plays out.

Someday the fans will learn the truth behind the Ross/Parcells saga, and then realize that Ross deserves everything he is getting...it's called eating ones regrets !!

WAY TO GO MMMIIIAAAMMMIIII. The only way they can F this up more is to sign a crap QB like Tebow if he gets released or worse yet they will trade for him. Im starting to hate this franchise.

Miss me yet?????

NOPE....

I HAVE NOTHING MORE TO SAY ABOUT THIS TEAM!!

SIMPLY DONE WITH THEM!

NO TEAM IN HISTORY HAS LOOKED THIS BAD IN A TWO WEEK PERIOD EVER!!!!!

Don't believe what all these scum say. They are also after the $.

ross needs to only make two moves: 1. fire ireland 2. sell the team!!!!!!!!!

Matt Moore to Davone Bess. Super Bowl, Baybeeee! The Dolphins are fooling the entire NFL. Their plan to be irrelevant for the next two decades is almost complete! Keep quiet or you might sabatoge their plan! Shhh!

Phins,

I actually got the link from the Sentinal. Omar now tweeting that SF has to sign Manning for the Fins to get Smith.

I guess Smith is waiting it out.

Sigh, the Patriots don't even think about the Dolphins. Just like Miami didn't give a crap what the Patriots did in the 30 something years we dominated them. Theyre worried about the Steelers and Ravens and maybe the Texans. Im sure the rest of the afc never crosses their minds.

Get used to it. We are the new laughing stock of the league. Idiot owner, idiot GM, will only lead us into the abyss of the nfl. please Ross, sell the team. Please get a GM who knows something about football. Ireland, get your head out of Ross' butt. We are a joke. But I think Moore will be fine. But also wont have ant receivers to throw to this year. Another good move GM. So Fins are a joke of an organization. Have been a fan for 35 years but getting ready to jump ship if the stupidity continues.

how come we don't have any weapons and we don't have cap space???? someone is mismanaging the team; ireland?

Breaking News: And the Dolphins.....YAWN

We Have Draft Picks,

I won't be applauding the Dolphins if they sign Smith for $8 mil a year. I know you're high on the guy but he's a middle of the rod QB...maybe low 20's. Not impressed with his guys at all. Last year was a career year when he threw for 3,100 yards and 17 TDs....not impressive at all! And I don't want to hear any of this he didn't have any WRs stuff. For his career he's averaged something like 11TDs and 9INTs, very mediocre numbers. I would have rather had the potential of Flynn over Smith. To me this will continue to take us down the mediocre road, so I'm hoping this doesnt happen.
