If Dolphins don't get Manning they'll chase Flynn

The Dolphins returned from their five-hour meeting with Peyton Manning late last night content they had done their best to land the biggest prize on the free agent market. But they are prepared, if necessary, to move on from Manning if/when they hear they're no longer in contention for the perennial Pro Bowl quarterback.

And that next move is trying to sign Matt Flynn.

The club has determined Flynn would be the next best answer to their quarterback problem. And for the record, this problem has gone on for a looooong time. The Dolphins have not had a Pro Bowl quarterback since Don Shula left in January of 1996. The Dolphins are the only AFC team that has not had a Pro Bowl quarterback in that entire time.

And you wonder why fans are desperate?

In a quarterback league?

Anyway, the idea of moving on from Manning to Flynn if Manning isn't of the mind to pick Miami is not new. But I was told by a club source that the way in which the club does this is a "delicate matter" for several reasons:

You don't want to offend Manning by publicly moving on before he makes a decision.

You don't want to offend Flynn by making it obvious to him that you're interested, but only as a fallback position, if Manning doesn't come.

It is a tough balance, especially since other teams aren't going to be waiting on Manning's decision to chase Flynn. The Seattle Seahawks and possibly the Cleveland Browns may move on Flynn quickly to fulfill their QB issues.

So how do the Dolphins get in that chase, again, without hurting themselves, hurting Manning or hurting Flynn?

The answer: Delicately.

Pretty sad if they see some cast off 7th round pick as the answer to our franchise QB position. Is Charlie Brown a FA?

Flynn. The next Rob Johnson.

Hurting Manning.....Hurting Flynn.......Are they really that easily "hurt?" Do these guys wear big boy pants or do they prance around in their satin panties when nobody is looking?

Ross and Ireland will prevaricate for ages and end up with Curtis Painter !

Why would Flynn be offended that a team pursued a future HOF QB before him? I mean duh!

So, according to this blog, Manning wears a pink satin thong and Flynn wears a baby blue satin thong....with little ruffles.

If the Dolphins are not completely sold on Flynn, then they have to wait on Manning. With how hard they have went after Manning, in my opinion it appears they are not sold on Flynn but as a back up plan. If the Dolphins thought Flynn was the real deal then why go after Manning? I get Peyton Manning don't become free agents every day but he is 35 years old coming off a injury. I have been for getting Manning while we find the future QB. By the Dolphins actions, I question if they are completely sold on Flynn.

@Dudley... wan't Tom Brady drafted in the 6th round. What a stinker he's turned out to be. Kurt Warner and Jeff Garcia went undrafted. Your rational is for shite.

So, on a serious note....when exactly do the Phins move on then? Tomorrow...Friday....next Monday? How long does this drag on for. I'm of the mind that Manning will make his decision RELATIVELY quickly, but I don't think it's happening by this afternoon.

If only my lover didn't leave me. My blog spamming was too much for him to bare. If only I had someone to share my pitiful existence with. Romeo? Where for art thou Romeo?

(intense sobbing heard in the distance)

I don't know how much Flynn values Philbin, because that could be our only leverage to get him if we don't land Manning, which is starting to look the most likely scenario. Showing Flynn interest as a second option can only hurt our chances.

WE CAN WAIT,WHY OVERPAY A BENCH QB? HEY ROSS! FLYNN IS THE NEXT MARINO? VINCE YOUNG,J.CAMPBELL AND DRAFT CHOICE QB IS AVAILABLE IN THAT TIME WHEN MANNING MAKE DECISION.

Here Home-o, I'm here Home-o!

please don't worry. ireland has been working around the clock to find an "acorn" on the cheap for our QB situation. acorns aren't choosy and will play for jeff.

bignik, yeah site the less than one percent exceptions of the last 7000 qb's. Rodgers his teammate and friend said he has potential to be a top fifteen qb, wow, so sounds like top 30 to me.

Why would they bother with 3 yr Manning if Flynn was a serious QB?

Why did GB let Flynn walk for nothing if he was a serious QB.

End of your argument. Brady, hah.

I think...that out of respect for the teams that Manning HAS granted an interview to....he should make his decision by 3PM...and let the rest move on to Other options....

I don't know if it will happen...but I think it is the RIGHT thing to do....

dolphin fan in georgia, just my opinion, but I think Philbin may have always been sold on Flynn. When the owner of the team says make Manning "plan A", that's what you have to do.

Quit waating time on manning bid on flynn asap, other teams have time to match any offer by any other team then if manning truely want to come here then get him, this regime will find a way to screw usm out of both qbs and leave us to resign garbage henne.

Choosing between Manning and Flynn is like choosing between a Whooper and a Big Mac, at this stage both are overrated.

Kris,
I agree with you. If Miami is out, his agent should have been on the phone first thing this morning telling Dolphins to move on.

Signal,
Good point.

I'm still saying we end up with Moore and the Phins draft a guy in the 2nd.

So I guess Miami will chase Flynn!

wolfman13,
I agree we will draft a QB in second. I am thinking Brandon Wheden.

please no flynn, 50 million dollars people Seattle and browns will cause a bidding war, mark this post.

Hope he signs with houston or sf, get smith or schaub, hell I would take kolb, he will be cheaper than flynn.

The Phins need to do what is best for the Phins and stop worrying about who's panties are getting bunched up in the process. This is business and business is cut-throat.

Georgia - I don't think they draft a QB at all if they land Flynn or Manning. If they do, it will be much further down the board.

If Ireland waits on Manning, like we did with fisher, & he doesn't sign. Another team will sign Flynn. We already missed out on RGIII.

This QB issue may be the final nail in Ireland's coffin. Fingers crossed!

Flynn has been a professional NFL player for quite a few years- why do some insist on bringing up his draft position as if it were some kind of grudge? Do we do the same for Bess, or Wake?

MARINO CURSE LIVES ON!!!!

The biggest knack on Flynn is that he has a weak arm and if he has to throw the ball in a tight window it might give him trouble also his deep ball isnt all that great. Hope everyone ready for a dink and dunk offense with Flynn.

Manning has set a great example of how to be a free agent. Do your home work and make a decision ASAP. If I am Flynn I am going to follow Manning's example. Wait until he declares his choice, then I can will be #1

Flynn has 2 whole games experience. Not much to go on to pay someone big FA bucks. Even players have come out and said they don't see Flynn as anything special. Philbin may reach for him just because he is comfortable with him and not on his ability.

When people talk about $50M or $60M or whatever....you do realize that amount is not guaranteed right? It's not baseball. Look at any of these big contracts and you will find numerous outs....option bonuses....incentives, etc. Generally speaking, roughly 1/3 of the overall contract is guaranteed at the most.

Everyone makes such a big deal about the Kolb contract...yes, it cost them a good chunk of change last year, but the effect on this years cap is virtually nill for AZ, particularly if they were to opt out of the option bonus.

People just look at the big, overall number and get all bent out of shape. It's not the "real" number.

Flynn is going to wait until Manning makes his choice. The price goes up after Peyton goes off the market.

DC,

I read your comments to Kris and I from yesterday. I think you took my comments wrong, which seems to happen a lot on a written format like this. BY NO MEANS was I attacking you yesterday. I will say, after all you've said about this team not doing enough to get better, you worry about Moore's feelings. I like Moore but I couldn't careless about Moore's feelings. It's all about the team getting better.

So I think my comments were taken completely wrong yesterday. Seems like everyone is on EDGE right now with everything going on right now. I will say I have attacked you on here before as you have with me, as you did a couple of weeks ago by saying 'f*ck you' and 'go punch in your phony numbers' or whatever it was you said.

Doubtful we're going to agree with much on here but I'll do my best to remain respectful.

Slightly off topic: we need to cut Murtha or not re-sign him....he is the ultimate underachiever since college to the present...Let him go along with Colombo.

I see how this turns out, wait for Manning, lose both Manning and Flynn. Same old Dolphins.

Have Scheffter and ESPN been right about anything as far as the Manning story is concerned? First we were out of it and then it was going to be just an obligatory meeting with Philbin and Sherman. Not too much they've been right with on any of this stuff.

TRUTH?.....that don't have a clue what Manning is thinking and for people to follow along with them and think they're getting the truth is just wrong. They're in the dark about what Manning will do, just like everybody else.

I'm done with this team. If you want Flynn, you are stupid. We have Matt Moore. He's 27. I will no longer watch the games.

I see how this turns out, wait for Manning, lose both Manning and Flynn. Same old Dolphins.

______________________________________________________________________________

I'm with many others here....I don't think Flynn signs anywhere until the Manning saga is over. Everyone acts like Flynn is going to be signed by 4:05 this afternoon.

Flynn will be visiting with numerous teams....far more than Manning has/will.

What do people feel about Winston Justice coming available? He'd be a nice answer at RT but will there be too much competition for his services and too expensive?

I'm fine with the Dolphins being in on the Flynn talks but if it gets too expensive I think they need to bail. I think we can improve the QB play without throwing crazy money at him. Rather see it spend on RT and S, if we're not getting a CLEAR upgrade at QB.

Mando,

I don't think its as delicate as it seems. If I were one of these players (Manning or Flynn) I would totally understand that the Dolphins are searching hard for a franchise quarterback and they are competing with other teams to do this. Manning is taking longer that expected with his decision and might possible overlap the start of free agency. Flynn is, in a sense, competing with arguably the greatest quarterback in history. If he thinks he should, somehow, be considered a front-runner, then he is delusional and clinically insane. The Dolphins need to show to both these players they highly coveted. If they don't then they are at risk of offending them.

THATS RIGHT, TAKE WEEDEN IN 2ND, SIGN FA TE,REGGIE NELSON AND MARIO WILLIAMS,IN 1ST. OL.

Doubtful we're going to agree with much on here but I'll do my best to remain respectful.

The most exciting player who was available this offseason was Randy Moss. Smart organizations like the 49ers, who go 13-3 and are 3 points from the super bowl, knew that. That's why the 49ers have signed Moss.

I told you this stuff a month ago when it was announced that Moss was going to play again.

The 49ers are going to the super bowl this year and moss will be a huge part of that, obviously.

ENRIQUE - quite the laundry list there. Mario Williams alone would require some substantial cuts elsewhere just to stay under the cap, so you could forget Nelson....and forget signing pretty much anybody else. Miami isn't in a good cap position to make such a move.

Craig M,
I totally agree about how Scheffter has continued to report false information to the Dolphin fans. Just this morning, he basically said Dolphins are out. He is the one who said Manning was in Miami worn out and would take no more visits then it comes out Manning was in Indy setting up other visits. I have lost alot of respect for him through this process.

Who should be getting offended is Matt Moore, who was the 10th best QB in the league last year even though he was the backup QB not getting 1st team snaps for the first 4 weeks.

This is what scares me about Flynn, once there's more film out on Flynn teams will adjust and exploit his weaknesses. He only has 2 games but teams will see Flynn over a 7 or 8 games period and make there adjustment. The question is can Flynn make his adjustments? It's like playing crapshoot.

I disagree flynn may sign before Manning (if manning goes into next week) seattle and browns have no stake in manning gate, why can't they wow him, I know 50 is not guaranteed, but 20 plus will be. Don''t need a noodle arm for that.

MM,

You're kidding me, right? 'Most exciting player'. Is that why they signed him to a ONE year contract?

The truth is Moss looked HORRIBLE when he last played back in 2010. Three teams canned his a** and he had little impact. Truth is none of us know if he has anything left. Hence the one year contract.

Pass on old man manning! While his suitors wait for him to decide they won't be signing FA's! How can they when they won't know how much Manning will take up?

We can get prime young FA's while other teams wait for a 36 year old no neck!

At 4pm, announce you're out of the running! Pursue Flynn, a RT & a FS. Adress pass rush, RG, SS & Cb in the draft. Start Moore & pick up Weeded in Rd 2 if Flynn wants too much.

dolfan in georgia,

Actually I forgot he said no more visits for Manning. He's been wrong on ALL accounts. Like you I used to be a Scheffter fan too. Lost a lot of respect for him through this too....he's guessing and making it out to be FACT.

MM - do you recall the last time Randy Moss played....he ended up on three different teams in one season. People's memories are short...they just recognize the name and get all giddy.

Perhaps the Phins should go after T Owens. I just saw him play last Sunday when I attended my first IFL game (NM Stars vs Allen, Tx Wranglers). He scored a TD and had 50 yards receiving against a bunch of old, has been, wanna be, never was footballers. Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining as all hell....but pretty much just a back yard football game and that's all Owens could muster.

Flynn isn't stupid and doesn't live in a bubble. you cant turn on a tv, radio, or computer and not realize the Dolphins are hot for Manning. I dont see how he could be insulted. he knows he is the fallback option. hopefully it motivates him to get on the field and kick butt.

"Peyton will be bringing Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark and Jeff Saturday."

Who needs this? We have to push out our younger players now and drop in these old men? Get the hell outta here! Those guys are spent.

I dont think we need either Manning or Flynn. We need to trade up with the rams to number 6 and draft Tanneyhill. Give Moore the starting job and let Ryan learn for a year. Use our cap space to sign a lineman and a safety either nelson or atogwe.

Kris, I responded to you on the last blog.

Craig, I appreciate that, and I wasn't talking about what you said yesterday (like you said, it was that big dust up we had the other week).

And, you're right, I've added to this poisonous atmosphere. That's why the trolls think I'm a fake, because they were bitten by my tongue and it obviously hurt them because they started trolling me.

All I'm saying is we all have to deal with the trolls, and we may even be responsible for some of them. But we can all do better (those that want to) to make this a more civil environment. It gets out of whack because we all are passionate. But sometimes it goes to far (speaking for myself, I know I take it too far sometimes). Obviously the Herald isn't doing much, so it's up to us to make this the community we want it to be.

I'm just stating my intentions to do just that. Anyone else who's interested can do the same if they wish.
