If Dolphins don't get Manning they'll chase Flynn

The Dolphins returned from their five-hour meeting with Peyton Manning late last night content they had done their best to land the biggest prize on the free agent market. But they are prepared, if necessary, to move on from Manning if/when they hear they're no longer in contention for the perennial Pro Bowl quarterback.

And that next move is trying to sign Matt Flynn.

The club has determined Flynn would be the next best answer to their quarterback problem. And for the record, this problem has gone on for a looooong time. The Dolphins have not had a Pro Bowl quarterback since Don Shula left in January of 1996. The Dolphins are the only AFC team that has not had a Pro Bowl quarterback in that entire time.

And you wonder why fans are desperate?

In a quarterback league?

Anyway, the idea of moving on from Manning to Flynn if Manning isn't of the mind to pick Miami is not new. But I was told by a club source that the way in which the club does this is a "delicate matter" for several reasons:

You don't want to offend Manning by publicly moving on before he makes a decision.

You don't want to offend Flynn by making it obvious to him that you're interested, but only as a fallback position, if Manning doesn't come.

It is a tough balance, especially since other teams aren't going to be waiting on Manning's decision to chase Flynn. The Seattle Seahawks and possibly the Cleveland Browns may move on Flynn quickly to fulfill their QB issues.

So how do the Dolphins get in that chase, again, without hurting themselves, hurting Manning or hurting Flynn?

The answer: Delicately.

As free agency gets closer people start changing their tune from even a month ago. Suddenly Manning is Manning of 2006 and Matt Flynn is Joe Montana. Yeah right. And what is with the Ireland bashing? Hasn't he pretty much done a good job since Parcells left? The 1st two years with Parcells here Parcells were disasters in the draft and free agency. Do you really think Ireland had the reigns in 2008-2010? Please - he himself said he was training Ireland . The last of offseasons were pretty damn solid under Ireland alone. Dansby (unrestricted), Burnett (an add on in the trade down for Odrick), Bush (we gave up a 3rd string safety and special teamer in Ayaya?), Moore (no he's not great just average, but he was a reject that was off the scrap heap and where would the team have been if they didn't pick him up). Pouncy? Pencil him in for 10 yrs - done with that position. Clay & Jimmy Wilson look like solid picks. Daniel Thomas was fine - until he hurt an ankle and Bush took over, but get real- he was a rookie on a bad team - all of these rookies had to deal with a dysfunctional offense the first half of the season under Henne and Sparano. You can't say the same for a Mike Wallace or Mendenhall on the Steelers where they can stash him away for a year and develop on a good team. Same with Clyde Gates. I suppose the Jeff haters could cite Sparano , Henne, P. White Gibril Wilson, Erest W. and all of those busts as Irelend's fault but you can't say for sure that those were his calls - Parcells was here and I think any reasonable person would say Tuna was calling the shots - he even said as much on Pat White). I'm not saying I know for sure one way or the other who made the calls- Tuna or Ireland, but by the same token I'm not going to criticize Ireland for it when I don't know he was the man. If you don't know, and don't offer some point to back it up , or even some conjecture to make it worth reading then what's the point?

This team doesn't have any respect in the league because they havent earned it yet. Nobody is going to do that for Ross or Ireland. Every inexperienced owner GM and coach has to make their own way and learn and earn their way to respect. Peyton Manning coming in here isn't going to do it. Its going to be the guys who are here for the long haul - the Pounceys, the Longs, Bess, Dansby, Starks, McDaniel,Vontae, etc. For once this team is starting to acquire talent instead of bleeding it and I think you have to give it up for Ireland on that. Look around your division - Buffalo, NE, NYJ are not exactly tearing it up in the draft or free agency. I'm talking as a fan who has seen the team suck for 20+ years and I'm going to give credit where it is due. Ireland seems to be doing ok on his own and getting better. Whether I like him or not doesn't matter. What's the alternative? Beg people to come here and make us great? Grow a pair.

How come no one is chanting "We Want Orton!!" now??....and for those gayturds calling for reggie nelson, please look at what he accomplished with the jagwires...

Flynn can wait as long as he wants to sign a contract.
If I were Flynn I would entertain offers from any and all teams interested in me.

Sit back, review the offers and see what shakes out with Manning.

Once Manning signs, then even more offers will roll in to review.

Flynn does not need to sign anything at 4:01 today and if he's smart, he'll hold out for as long as possible to get the best deal.

Sorry fans were going to screw it up again Matt Moore will still be the starter in 2012 Flynn and manning are not going to sign in Miami and they will draft Ryan tannehill the next Chad Henne....... Its going to be some lean years still.

Captain, so true! Ireland is in over head. That's why he needs an expert to hold his hand. Actually, he just need to be replaced by someone that knows WTF to do!

Wow...I had no idea we are the only team in the AFC to not have a pro bowl QB since Shula left in 1996.

I think I'm going to cry now.

"Manning is known to "Take Over" in drills. Not only QB drill or 7 v 7's... Manning wants his hand in the RB drills, the O-line drills and Receiver drills."

Sound the alarm! All hands on deck! Dont allow P Manning to ruin the Miami Dolphins. Holy Sh***T this is funny stuff.

The Miami Dolphins had a QB who used to do this ... his name was .... wait for it .... Dan Marino.

Manning has also been known to take over in things that matter like, oh I don't know, GAMES. Of course don't let the trivial things like winning games get in the way of running your franchise. Of course you haven't done that in Miami in about three decades.

Btw it was Jerrod Johnson who Tannehill sat behind, not Stephen McGee. Johnson isnt playing anywhere now. And if Johnson hadn't been hurt in the middle of the 2010 season, Tannehill would still be a wr. Funny how things work out.

I would take orton over flynn right now, with Marshall here, all day. NO ON FLYNN

I guess we're the dark horse in the Manning Derby but I think that it's a good thing for the future of the Dolphins franchise. Manning will turn 36 on March 24th & unfortunately for all great athletes father time is undefeated. We need more pieces than just a QB & Manning's salary would kill our chances of adding any other big time FA's for the next three or four years. If we had $50 Million in cap space then I think that changes things.

We hired Philbin b/c of the way he ran the offense in GB so if he thinks Flynn is ready to be a solid starter (which I don't know) Ireland & Ross are idiots if they don't back him on this. Worst case scenario sounds like we'll draft Tannehill b/c Sherman is very high on this kid but at Number 8??? That's too high but like last year (Ponder & Locker) I expect a couple of QB's to go higher than they should. If we draft Tannehill we start the season with Moore--who played much better last year than I expected--& we let Tannehill learn.

Manning to Arizona

Flynn to Cleavland with an oulandish contract 60 million over 5 years.

Dolphins stuck with Moore goes 5 and 11 in 2012

Barfing for Barkley in 2013!

The problem some of us have with Ireland is that his job is not strictly the draft or signing free agents. He has to worry about cap space by doing things like not overpaying and reworking contracts when needed. He also needs to do things to try to get us some compensation for players who are exiting stage left. A few extra picks would be nice. We could also not give picks away in poorly thought out decisions. I think he's over his head, IMHO.

I know everyone thinks that Ireland is an idiot. But, I must say that we're better off roster-wise now than we have been for a while. And, I know that some of you naysayers don't believe that's true either. Oh well, you know what they say about opinions...

When they brought Matt Moore in to compete against Henne, there were a lot of comments that said "Who?" Everyone was so sure that he was a bust. Some of you still think so in spite of the fact that the rest of the NFL views him as a solid back-up QB with potential. His numbers last year as a starter aren't that bad and he did show progress as the season went on.

If we have to start the season with Moore, so be it!
Meanwhile, the Fins need to turn over every rock and explore all the possibilities available to upgrade that position. We have to trust in the new coach. I like the Philben-Sherman pairing a whole lot better than Sparano-Henning! And, other than Ireland, most of the stench of the Tuna has pretty much gone away. Be thankful for what we have, because we've had worse!

Funny, when they cut a dude its just business. When they chase a guy, well, its a "delicate matter".

I guess its not always business in the NFL. Especially if your last name is Manning.

Didn't someone say Peyton was a grown 35 year old man yesterday? I'm sure he would understand if Miami keeps all its options open.

Dolphin fans are like the girl that hates herself, then cuts herself to feel better. Right Clue, it's all bad.

So how do the Dolphins get in that chase, again, without hurting themselves, hurting Manning or hurting Flynn?

The Dolphins should quietly move on now! Manning is going to Denver.....Problem is that Flynn is not an upgrade from Matt Moore. Flynn knows the offense but does not have the body of work and success that Moore has. Arizona does not have the OL to protect Manning. The Dolphins will have a good OL if they draft a right tackle at number eight. However they were only the 30th rated OL in the NFL last season. Armando, Manning is going to Denver.

Another half arse effort by these clowns. So they showed up at the RG3 auction and by all accounts their offer was so poor they do not even mention it, maybe the Rams out of pity do not want to embarrass the Phins even more.

They have the golden opportunity to be the first people to talk to Manning being in the same town and can not even arrange a meeting here.

And now -if Mando is correct- they plan to correct our QB woes by signing option C in Flynn? Wow. It is worse than I wanted to believe. It is not that they strike out, I mean after all some of those people they pursue -how can you blamed them to go elsewhere?- but how they do so. Harbaugh, Fisher, RG3 and apparently Manning. We are just blind to see it as fans: we are undesirable as an NFL team, yes we are the Cleveland of the south, a team Lebron would have never come to.

If they bring Flynn, especially with the kind of cash is going to command and disabling our ability to sign other free agents it is going to blow up in their faces. The only positive I see here is that maybe 2012 will be such a disaster that Ross FINALLY fires Ireland.

Good luck selling tickets by the way, you not paying what Washington did will cost you millions of dollars, even if RG3 does not become a hall of famerm he could sure sell millions of tix, merchandise and TV contracts you never could with Flynn.

dmooreiii, I agree. There is more to being a GM than a talent evaluator. GM is EVERYTHING. Long should be extended. Dansby is NOT worth his contract & Marshall is not living up to his either. They need to be redone!

It would create MILLIONS in cap space & would give us a chance to get some REAL players in FA instead of acorn hunting!

How does anyone on here know that Flynn &/or Tannehill won't become very good starting QB's??? I just don't get it.

Philbin knows Flynn better than anyone else & the same can be said for Sherman when it comes to Tannehill. I trust these guys a heck of a lot more than a bunch of complaining beeothches with an internet connection.

BTW--Moore played a LOT better than Henne ever did so he's not that bad of a backup plan. Can he win a SB??? No but I'd take him over that blade Sanchez any day of the week.

Hard to pass on the greatest FA of all time(assuming he's the same Player he's always been), derek. And apparently, we have a chance. In regards to Flynn, he has not proven(not even to Philbin) that he can win the close games, as a great QB must do. But I'm with you 100% that we must not alienate Philbin. Coach first and players second.

Well said Tracy 474.

Tiger dude like untold you yesterday Washington is going no where. They're so smart they lost 36 million in cap because of a miscalculation in front loaded contract in the uncapped year. Now that is a complete embarrassment for a team. More embarrassment than anything the Dolphins have done. They won't have players to put around RG3.

He's going to turn 36 in less than two weeks, he's had 3 or 4 neck surgeries, & he's going to cost upwards of $20 Million a year. That's quite a bit of a gamble for a team that has SEVERAL needs including RT, RG, FS, TE, another pass rushing DE in the 4-3 to go with Wake, a Weak-side LB to play in the 4-3 (Dansby will move to Strong-side LB & Burnett will be the MLB), & a nickel CB with about $17-18 Million of cap space.

"Hard to pass on the greatest FA of all time(assuming he's the same Player he's always been), derek. And apparently, we have a chance."

Sorry but, no, you REALLY don't. Go read the Berardino article on the SS. Gives good insight to the state of the franchise when 1 of the most sought after FA's won't even go to your facility.

Factor in also, that the meeting was done offsite because he's turned of by too much media frenzy in Miami? How is he gonna handle playing here if he's scared of reporters?

Any hope of Manning coming to play here is a pipe dream. You best get over it before he hurts your feelings when he signs elsewhere.

You know what smoothes feelings over? Millions of Dollars. I don't think they will be too hurt once they sign their contracts. they are professionals for Christ's sake!!!

As many surguries as hes had on that neck and 4 teams literally salavating over his services. We should drop out its now too big of a risk. I still think he retires or goes to Houston.

Paying a seventh round pick who has TWO career starts in the NFL millions of dollars in the hope that he is the answer at QB???? It is no wonder this franchise is going from bad to worse each and every day. What in the world makes anyone think that the weak-armed Flynn is our answer? Why not stick with Matt Moore who has MUCH more experience in the NFL and a better arm, and use those millions to improve our other weaknesses. Maybe, just maybe MM is our answer at QB and if not we draft one next year.

I know, I know, Draft Picks. Tough to swallow that, once again, we might not have the ammunition to hire some great Athlete.

If the browns get Flynn why not try for McCoy

It is unbelievable, they don't want to hurt Manning ?
Are you kidding me? What about Manning hurting the Dolphins and fans with his prima donna comments, decisions, snobism. He owns an apartment in Miami and cannot even visit Philbin there ?
The Dolphins should've put an ultimatum to this situation after which they shoul've focused on Flynn or the draft itself. This team has not pride at all. They're always making little and stupid calculations about not hurting somebody. As if Fisher, Manning, you name it, were worrying too much about the Dolphins. They don't care a damm about this team. They care about their own future, money, and career.
But the staff of this team is unable to learn a bit. Morons !!

I've seen him plenty in Cleveland, not good

So you think Manning is afraid of the Media here? Berardino is FOS. You are FOS, and not in Reality. Check.

My thoughts on this is, Philbin knows Flynn VERY well. If he does not sign him in the first minute of free agency, then we kind of know Philbin is not sold on him 100%. If we are going after Manning first, Flynn is no guarentee to success in the most important persons eyes. Our head coach.

If Flynn is can't miss, this conversation does not happen. That is why I am skeptical on Flynn at this point.

Flynn has a couple of throws that are 45-50 yards in the air and on the money in the highlights of the Detroit game. He is accurate, and has looked great in the past two preseasons.

I prefer Manning for the short term, but, I think Flynn is a clear upgrade over Moore and he knows the system, so the learning curve wont exist.

Mando, want to give you accolades for your diligence in covering all of this. You were on it late last night and first thing this morning. Sometimes you don't get the praise we all need from time to time. Good job, way to stay on it!

Tracy, Overall I agree that the roster is better than past years. The problem is it could be much better if Ireland did all the things a good GM needs to do. The elite teams get it done in all facets. Acorns are for squirrels. Sound management by the GM would make a world of difference.

this post is BS

Yes, Armando, I don't think anyone expected MIA to pursue Flynn. Thanks for burning the midnight oil on that one!

Ben Volin at the Post has some good points on Manning...worth the read.

I say if the Manning deal falls thru, find a backup and go with Moore and try again next year. Fill in some holes thru the draft, restructure/cut dead wood. And please, please stop leaving money on the table. We've had more than enough players leave without ANY compensation.

Poizen, Philbin doesnt run the organization, Ross does, if Ross wants Manning, Philbin listens to his boss despite how Philbin feels about Flynn

Clue, I'll respond to you since I don't believe you to be a troll.

Why's it bother you first? Second, it's not about us 3, it's about the entire blog. Everyone's (just about) constantly attacking or defending from an attack. It's gotten to ridiculous proportions. I'm just trying to promote a less-confrontational environment. That would be beneficial to everyone who isn't here only to irritate others.

People don't KNOW me, so I'm not offended being called weak or a sissy or anything. People who do really know me would never use those words to describe me. I'm also comfortable in my own skin, so it's really not about me being thin-skinned or easily offended or anything.

This is a problem on all blogs. And this technology is more and more becoming the way people communicate with others. So we (as a people) need to learn how to communicate effectively in this forum for the good of all of us (and diversity of opinion and good conversation). Not too sure why that's a bad thing to some people.

I DON'T CARE if we offend Peyton Manning. Does he CARE about us after he tells us no? There's a movie "He's not that into you" that Mr. Ross should watch. We all know when a girl isn't into us guys, THEY should know if Manning is playing them. THEY should have known that JEFF FISHER was...I don't like Flynn and I want Manning but this DUO of IRELAND and ROSS can mess this up and not get ANY QB..then we reach for Tannehil with the 8th pick. Man, it's like we can predict the mess they will create.

First Moore and Flynn have comparable arms. Their arms are of great but good enough. The problem with Moore is accuracy and pocket pressence. Being a7th round pick is no longer germane, that's like saying Tom Brrady shouldn't start because he's a 6th round pick. You have to deal with the here and now not where someone was picked 4 years ago. Some players develop others don't. Moore needs competition, real competition and Flynn will give it to him. We've seen some of the things that Flynn can do. And his position coach is now th HC here, so he should know his capabilities.

Everyone is down on Flynn because what?: He's a 7th round pick. Let me remind everyone, Tom Brady was a 6th round pick, Not the last round in the draft but second to last round in the draft and where has that gotten New England (how many SuperBowl Appearances)?? So saying Flynn doesn't have experience with just two games, he has started two games, some pre-season games, and scout and second team reps in practice. If you are leary on Flynn, that's natural, so were New England Fans when he took over for Drew Bledsoe.

Go in with Flynn. He knows the offense and he won't be another Kolb situation because Flynn isn't changing offenses. Manning, Kolb, and all those other FA QB's will and had to learn new offenses. Flynn will be ready to go as soon as he walks in the door. Forget the rental of Manning and get a QB that will be here for more than 3 seasons.

Agree with dmooreiii and Captain O. Ireland is a good scout/evaluator by all accounts but as GM he is not as efficient. So the Skins did a horrible job with their cap situation, but they had the balls to go get RG3. When are we going to get a player that has both the potential to become great and excite the franchise? I guess never while Ireland is in town.

Trying to find that gem has not worked out for us in what 15 years? I know Ireland has not been part of that entire process but his job aside from scouting has not been stellar. Cap-wise we are in a bad spot, agree with some of you the Marshall deal should have been reworked by now, same with Dansby who is getting paid an absurd amount of money for what he yields on the field.

Please don't tell me there have been no blunders for Ireland either:
-Failed pursuit of Fisher, RG3 and now Manning apparently, we are a second class citizen in the NFL these days.
-They way he handled the roster las year putting a band aid here and there, mishandled to some extent Jason Allen and especially Larry Johnson, that was unprofessional and embarrassing, remember these players are more close than you think and talk to each other, there is a reason why when our name is mentioned people sigh. Do you watch TV? I guarantee you will see it. From Golic to other NFL people the moment the name Ross or Ireland or Dolphins for that matter they go oh-oh.

No to Flynn, no more scraps, this has nothing to do with him being a 7th rounder, I'm basing my opinion from what I've seen on video. That Detroit game is an aberration numbers-wise, if anything to the analytical eye -not the fantasy owner one- it clearly shows Flynn's shortcomings. You know Marshall has already a problem catching so balls, you think he's gonna bail Flynn like Nelson did? Open your eyes.

Why don't we sign REGGIE WAYNE and DALLAS CLARK today at 4:01 PM and then let's see what horse face Elway does in Denver? Why are we letting Manning tell us what to do...might as well be carrying his purse for him.

I too believe Flynn is an upgrade over Moore. But he's no Manning.

..We disscussed this a bit yesterday. Some good points were made. But how on earth can anyone say that Matt Moore is better then Matt Flynn..? Especially in THIS OFFENSE..I know Flynn is the great unknown. This only applies to us the fan. The person who is the only one that matters in this choice has some pretty good hands on knowledge.

Reasonable people realize that Philbin is going to always be identified with the decision to bring in Flynn. Good or bad, this will define him as head coach in Miami(unless Flynn suffers a career ending injury, and we never know what he would have done)..Think about this for a second. Should Flynn flop. Philbin is going to take the brunt of the blame, and he is going down with him. If Matt Moore is head and shoulders above Flynn. We wouldn't even be thinking about the move. It would be a mute point.

Philbin knows Flynn can run HIS SYSTEM...Get it?? Do you guys know how important that is? It trumps arm strength, or mobility..Knowledge of how to play in this system is a golden ticket..Do you guys realize that we haven't had a quarterback that execute even half of the offense since Pennington? I know Moore was new, and on limited time..blah blah..But there was a reason why our offense looked so boring. There was a reason the playcalling was so questionable...TRUST OF THE QUARTERBACK!!!!!!!! there was none. Moore earned this a bit toward the end of the year. But can you understand what an advantage it is to have a guy that can run the FULL SYSTEM day 1???

Flynn may be lacking in many areas..He may have been a 7th round pick(The most rediculous of the arguments at this point..the guy has been in the league 4 years. Ever hear the term improvement?). He has always made sense here. These are desperate times for teasm who believe they don't have franchise quarterbacks..Seriously. Teams are willing to pay a guy a kings ransom, and the teams haven't even seen him throw. Flynn is the best fit of all the available options. We have to trust our new guy if this deal goes down.

I see the child is back, even using characters from children's movies as sign ins, wonderful.

Berardino is a know nothing hack. The reason Manning didn't come to the facility was because he wasn't in the mood for his car to be chased down the highway by a bunch of sweaty south Florida reporters in trains, planes, and automobiles. He has already been to the locker rooms, weight rooms, film rooms, showers, toilet, (anything else he would need to see?) twice.

He was tired from his trip and didn't feel like dealing with some members of the Florida media and their special brand of "instigative" journalism. Gone are the days of investigative journalism or we wouldn't have been told Petersen was in any plane with Ross and Ireland when he wasn't even in the same state.

Oh yeah, this just in,,,don't sign ANYONE who refuses a workout before the signing! Ridiculous.

yeah poizen, we'
ll kno come 4:03.

Yeah, Armando seems to be always the 1st in getting to the story out of all these big shot Newspapers.(I wonder if he is related to Home).

Tom Brady is the exception rather than the rule. The law of probability suggests that Flynn is not the next Brady. Since we don't know how he'll turn out, particarly because of his 2 game resume and backup status, people doubt him.

If Manning goes to Denver I wouldn't mind Tebow to the Phins if possible. I mean it would be entertaining to say the least.

Nah, what am I talking about Jax -yes Jax LOL- will outbid us LOL, we are pathetic.

Remember folks Adam S is repped by same agent as manning and tebow, so either he has a scoop or is being jerked around ( I would think his agent is feeding him bits)

@ 11:36....lol...that is funny to me....lol...

To me...you are funny...so we can laugh @ each other...

You find it funny that 3 REAL people can have a common bond on the internet..the LIKES of which you will probably NEVER experince...even in real life....

and I find it funny that you don't understand the concept...and more likely than not...NEVER WILL...after all...its hard to meet people in youe mom's basement....

Anyway....looks like we found some common ground...

We don't sign Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark because they're waiting to see what Manning does, not the other way around. They'll follow Manning, Manning is not following them,

I think Matt Flynn is smart enough and man enough to admit Peyton Manning is a better QB, thus more coveted than him.

I don't think he cares if he's number 1 or 2 on the Dolphins' list.

I love these tom brady vs flynn, please name all the other stud 7th rounders that have won a recent superbowl, terrible comparison!!

Daryl I don't think it IS reasonable to assume a Flynn signing means Philbin is on board. There is no way of knowing that. Ireland through Ross is desperate to sign a QB. They have told everyone in the universe they will be upgrading the position as best they can. So imo Philbin probably has very little say in who is and who isn't getting signed by the Dolphins. I would never blame Philbin if Flynn didn't work out. For all we know he could be warning them not to but Ross' desperation to come out with something may over rule that.

Tiger I don't know what film of Flynn you watched, but he looked pretty damn good against NE and Detroit.
