If Dolphins don't get Manning they'll chase Flynn

The Dolphins returned from their five-hour meeting with Peyton Manning late last night content they had done their best to land the biggest prize on the free agent market. But they are prepared, if necessary, to move on from Manning if/when they hear they're no longer in contention for the perennial Pro Bowl quarterback.

And that next move is trying to sign Matt Flynn.

The club has determined Flynn would be the next best answer to their quarterback problem. And for the record, this problem has gone on for a looooong time. The Dolphins have not had a Pro Bowl quarterback since Don Shula left in January of 1996. The Dolphins are the only AFC team that has not had a Pro Bowl quarterback in that entire time.

And you wonder why fans are desperate?

In a quarterback league?

Anyway, the idea of moving on from Manning to Flynn if Manning isn't of the mind to pick Miami is not new. But I was told by a club source that the way in which the club does this is a "delicate matter" for several reasons:

You don't want to offend Manning by publicly moving on before he makes a decision.

You don't want to offend Flynn by making it obvious to him that you're interested, but only as a fallback position, if Manning doesn't come.

It is a tough balance, especially since other teams aren't going to be waiting on Manning's decision to chase Flynn. The Seattle Seahawks and possibly the Cleveland Browns may move on Flynn quickly to fulfill their QB issues.

So how do the Dolphins get in that chase, again, without hurting themselves, hurting Manning or hurting Flynn?

The answer: Delicately.

sign Henne and Flynn, trade Moore and Marshall, inverst in OL and FS, Manningham is available and don't drop nice passes and don't cry.

Clue, Ohio,

Geez, I have been a Dolphins season ticket holder longer than both of you have been alive. (42 years and counting)

You are defineltly a voice of reason....the only (potential) rival you have in that department is Poizen....and a few to many disses of "his boy" Chad Henne kinda gets him going...

If Dolphins don't get Manning they'll chase Flynn

If Dolphins don't get Flynn they'll chase Pat White

Tony Paige,

I saw Tony Paige play and while he did catch a lot of dump passes from Marino I seldom saw him run for 8 or 12 yards after the catch.

I respect all Fin fans who have been around much longer I have been. I will say I have been a fan long enough for a little respect too though. I demanded my own jersey and Dolphins mug at 5 years old..........been a fan for 23 years.

and I had NO IDEA how I should have been cherishing every last moment of the great Marino years. It's been a very long decade since then

Anyone who says Moore did not play well last year didn't watch the games BUT if Philbin is going to run the same offense that he did in GB & he has confidence in Flynn that's more than enough for me. Philbin knows this guy as well as anybody so if he thinks he can win with Flynn then that's a heck of a lot more than I know.

Bring back RoboHenne so we at least have someone to boo. LMAO!!

Neither did anyone else. The post-Marino era has bee mind numbing....

You diss me brah? I was Dannyboy's favorite target. I hauled in 74 catches one year.

Albert, Have you really been re-newing your season tickets in this decade? I respect that with all the losing the franchise been doing.

I'll never forget going in my room and crying(I admit it) after the Jags dismantled Marino and the Dolphins. 62 to 7. Why didn't the refs call that game to spare Marino the embarressment?

We have draft picks, I feel like I'm picking on u but really it's coincidence, but Moore played decent, however, he is not a playoff qb, but even more importantly, this is all about a west coast offense that Matt Moore cannot run, not a shot against him, it just will never fit. And, if Moore is all we have, then philbin and the dolphins are doomed before they start. It's about timing and precision.

Yeah, I agree Ohio, Albert deserves a bottle of Scotch or something. 42 years, incredible. One, he's DEFINITELY bald! No way you go from 1973 to today and haven't lost A LOT of hair. Gray too (like me, a 30 year fan is doing).

At least Albert saw us win a SB in his lifetime though. That's all I'm asking for and then I won't mind dying.

So one way of thinking is that based on what Moore did last year with a joke of a coaching staff, no training camp, limited snaps before taking the reigns, and a weak OL

Anthony Ricardo Paige (born October 14, 1962 in Washington, D.C.) is a former professional American football player who played running back for nine seasons for the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, and Miami Dolphins of the National Football League. Paige went professional in 1984 as a sixth round selection of the New York Jets. He led the Jets in touchdowns (10) as a rookie starter. After nine seasons in the league, he retired at the age of 30.

Paige’s football career began at DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland, where he would later be elected into the school’s Hall of Fame. He then donned the Chicago maroon and burnt orange at Virginia Tech. Paige is considered one of the finest blocking and receiving fullbacks to ever play for the Hokies and was also inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame.

He has been an NFL agent for the last 18 years, representing players like Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers, Randy Starks of the Miami Dolphins and 4-time Pro Bowl selection Kris Jenkins, now a Studio Analyst for SNY and CBS. He is with the Washington, D.C.-based representation firm Perennial Sports and Entertainment

, he should do better this year.

We're doomed until Ireland is fired.

Henne never have OL, never have time to throw the ball, when he have more freedom to change plays he was injured.

HENNE IS NOT MY BOY!!!! WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING!!!! Oh, Kris, point taken, it does get me going a bit... LOL.

Any-who... :)

Cam Newton's agent is Tony Paige??????????? Seriously? And Starks??

Plenty of teams taking care of a lot of business leading up to the opening of free agency. Not much going on in that regard from our FO. Pretty quiet.

Paige caught about 145 passes from Marino in 3 years. Look it up.

We would've gotten Andrew Luck if Henne didnt get hurt.

Good points Darryl. I would counter that Ross didn't so much hire Philbin because he saw something in him but because he lost out on Fisher and Philbin was the next best choice. Not coming down on Philbin, love the guy so far and he seems really bright, I'm just saying. But yes ofcourse Philbin will have input I guess what I meant is that if the input was that Flynn wouldn't fit in his offense, I'm not so sure that Ross would say "make it work" so he doesn't come out of this with more egg on his face.

I know what you mean and under normal circumstances I would completely agree but Ross has lost so much since taking over the Dolphins. Most of all his dignity. The man was and is a shrewd business man who made a fortune but didn't make enemies, did it mostly by being a nice guy. But he always got what he wanted.

Now he comes to Florida and is hated by the fans and has 2 decades of mediocrity to account for, only 2 of those years being under his watch. Loses every battle he has fought while being constantly ridiculed by the media. And now he may lose out on Manning who he has publicly swooned over.

I just can't see him saying "okay Joe, I won't go after Flynn because I trust your instincts". The two barely know each other and Ross will be the one taking the fall for not landing one of the top two FA qbs of the off season. Trust me, I hope you're right because that will be what is best for the team. I'm just not so sure Ross won't be looking out for his best interests first. It's going to be terribly hard to sell tickets by asking the fans to trust ANOTHER first time head coach. It would be easier to sell them with the top free agent QB after Manning. Once again,,,,hoping you're right!

I'm just surprised that so many automatically consider Flynn an upgrade over Moore, and advocate spending a fortune to signing Flynn, with what appears to be little thought.

Clue, DC Dolfan,

Being a Dolphin fan since 1971 has been like a marriage. For better or worse till death due us part. The 70-74 seasons were glorious. The era of the Killer bees were very good. Went to 2 Super Bowls and almost won one. This past decade has been tough. And no, I still have my hair although the brown is loosing the battle to the gray.

OK Big phins guy than Flynn is the answer cause he went 2-0 against 2 suspect defenses. Really???

I DO....

Tony Paige,

Yes Tony Paige caught a lot of passes from Marino and was a fine blocker. What I am questioning is your memory on the YAC.

Troll at 1:49

I remeber Paige he would not rumple much , Keith Byars, he was a dude that could roll up the rac or yac.

It also appears that his stats indicate he did a lot to try to win games. They don't only count wins or games against "suspect defenses" or non-playoff bound teams. If only the receivers, OL, and secondary would have stepped up, we might have won a few more. Can't pin those on Moore. Sorry.

Keith Jackson, Troy Drayton, a couple of studs to be sure.

Ross did not become wealthy because he was from a rich family. I'm sorry but that is an ignorant statement. The great thing about this country is you can become rich of your own doing if you are smart and work hard. Of course you need to have a brain because hard work alone doesn't usually get you there but none the less. Here is Ross' early life.

Ross was raised in Detroit and later graduated from Miami Beach Senior High. He attended the University of Florida and then transfered to the University of Michigan Business School, where he earned his bachelors degree in accounting in 1962. He also received a Juris Doctor from the Wayne State School of Law in 1965. He earned an LL.M. degree in Taxation from the New York University School of Law (1966).[4]
He began his career as a tax attorney at Coopers & Lybrand in Detroit, and went on to become assistant vice president in the real estate subsidiary of Laird Inc. and in the corporate finance department of Bear Stearns, both in New York City.

Yeah, a lot of wealthy families send their kids to Miami beach senior high school. Bachelors degree in accounting you say,,,hmmmm,,,, what an elitist! Tax attorneys always come from wealthy families! hahahaha please stop with the blind hatred.

Here is a question. Just for arguments sake. What if we don't get Manning. Then we don't get Flynn?

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS GONNA SAY NEXT ABOUT IRELAND? All you Ireland lovers must provide an explanation if we failed to get Manning and then fail to get Flynn.

Philbin doesn't negotiate the contracts. Ireland negotiates the contracts. So what exactly will be the excuse if we fail to get manning and THEN fail to get Flynn? How could you guys even continue thinking Ireland is a great GM?

Troll at 1;55 pm

ALoco, Im offended you refereed to me as a donkey. A Stallion describes me much better.

Matt Flynn is the 2nd coming of A.J. Feeley. One nice game proves NOTHING AT ALL.

Troll at 1:55 and 1:56. I hate trolls..........!!!

They'll mess up things like they always do. In the end Manning will sign elsewhere & so will Flynn. It's the Dolphin way!

this has more to do with ross and irelands say so than philbin on the decision to get manning....I think philbin is also hoping that manning doesnt choose miami in hopes that he can build this team up the right way through the draft and FA...not with a quick fix over the hill QB......

If I was DEN,ARZ,OR TENN....I would pray to god that manning is physically ready to take the kind (HELL)punishment he is lining up for next year cuz dont think for a second that other teams arent tired of hearing about peyton manning....

I know the players on this defense will be icthing to knock the nerves out of him...just sayin!!!

Troll at 1;58 pm .

I am fine if both sign with other teams, I dont blame ireland for this its ross, the owner sets the tempo and is the true face of the team.

I'm starting to feel like it's a real possibility that we don't get either. I really feel like Manning ends up a Cardinal and if not there then Denver but I agree with most of the so called "experts" who think Miami is a long shot.

I also don't expect Manning to make a decision at least until early next week which leaves Miami out of on Flynn because I expect he signs with Seattle as soon as tomorrow or Thursday because he won't want to wait around on what Miami is going to do.

I agree with you on Ireland he is a nightmare. No one wants to work with him (Harbaugh, Fisher) and there is a reason for that. He is an arrogant Parcells wanna-be and he has 0 credentials. I would have rather kept Sparano then keep Ireland although I was hoping they both got canned.

Albert, you ARE the man!!!!

DD, and Phins78,
Even if we get Flynn, and Philbin claims Flynn's his guy...
Is that REALLY Philbin's choice, or Ireland's? Remember Ireland is the vanilla play-it-safe guy, and Flynn suits that perfectly. In a rational Dolphin universe, Ireland asks Philbin who he wants, and then they figure out how best to do it. But I don't get that sense from Ireland, and less so from Ross. So is Ireland making the call, or is he executing Philbin's plan.

That will be hard to figure out as they'll both play the PC game well once the mics are on.

It'll be up to Armando and his fellow dirt-diggers to fill us in on what really is going on.

I'll be happy when this circus is over. I was really looking forward to the draft.
At least with Manning, we would've drafted a QB.

Must have faith. This may work out fine, despite all my doubts.

Troll 1;59.

the neck

the dentist

and home the donkey......

Fake Clue, Why troll my name.

yeah K. Byars, Jackson and Dreyton were studs

Guys, one thing is for sure.

In the next hours we will actually have REAL content to talk about when moves get made, instead of just speculation. finally!

Phinsfan78, I need you to remember to cite your sources, which is from Wikapedia.

I am the GOAT -- the greatest of all time. I caught a few of Danny's passes too, playah!

There is no way Flynn is Ireland's guy and is the safe bet. He is a HUGE risk with only 2 starts under his belt. So it's who Philbin believes he can with.

Remember folks, Philbin publicly said his plan is the draft his personnel, QB included. Manning was his exception.

So why do we all think he wants Flynn? The FO wants Flynn, but is that Philbin's voice through them?

I just don't know.

And now I am here to answer your questions and address your concerns. Any questions?

There is no "answer" until it's known. This isn't a trivia game where someone asks a question and there is an obvious answer. We are all guessing and hoping for the best. One guesses Flynn, one guesses Moore, one guesses Peyton but no one knows. Anyone of them can have a great season or get injured in the first game. There is no answer and anyone that believes they have one is fooling themselves.
