Is Manning really that into the Dolphins?

I've dated in my life. I know what it looks like when someone is really into me ... and I know what it looks like when someone really isn't that into me. (Insert jokes in comments section).

Anyway, free agency is a little like dating. You wine. You dine. You spend money. You chase. It is a date minus the flowers or candy. And so far, Peyton Manning has been on four dates in the last week since his release from the Indianapolis Colts.

He dated Denver. He dated Arizona. He dated Miami. And he dated Tennessee.

My issue?

He dated Denver in Denver over a two-day span. He dated Arizona in Arizona over a two-day span. He dated Tennessee in Nashville over a 9-hour span.

The Dolphins? They had to go to him. They got only five hours.

Does that sound like the Dolphins got equal treatment? Does it sound like Manning, who I reported yesterday is very interested in finding a strong relationship with his next team, got an ample opportunity to bond with anyone representing Miami?

Obviously, I am on the outside looking in. The Dolphins continue to believe they are in the game. They continue to wait on a final nod of approval or dismissive hand gesture to know how to proceed next. And for all we know, details of their visit with Manning included the free agent quarterback hugging every Miami rep and promising to sign as soon as he dispensed with one last visit.

But I doubt it. And it just seems from my point of view that even if the Dolphins are in this horse race, they are aboard a nag trailing the field. That's how I see it. That is increasingly how fans that email me, call my radio show and follow me on twitter view it.

How is it the Dolphins apparently haven't seen this?

Today, by the way, feels like a big day to me on the Manning front. My gut is we'll see some sort of indication from the Manning camp by tonight which teams are seriously, seriously in the running for the player. ESPN has reported every team that has interviewed Manning is in the running.

But eventually this is going to begin getting whittled. Arizona's deadline for paying quarterback Kevin Kolb a $7 million bonus. The Dolphins cannot continue to sit idle while next QB possibility Matt Flynn visits with Seattle. And one assumes the Titans, talking to several other free agents, also need indication which way this will turn.

So the end of the great courting of Peyton Manning seems on the horizon.

By the way, on another topic, Kendall Langford is scheduled to visit the Cincinnati Bengals today.

Of course they looked different they had nothing to lose at 0-7. No one ever takes this into account. Teams that are out of the playoffs before the season is half way over tend to loosen up. They have nothing to lose therefore there is no fear of failure. This has gone on throughout the history of competitive sports. Moore coming in and getting a bad team to beat a bunch of worse teams means nothing.

Did you notice that Moore only beat none playoff teams? Even teams like the Eagles and Cowboys, who didn't make it but have a lot of talent were able to beat us. Thanksgiving,,everyone forgetting that game so soon? Didn't Moore have a chance to win the game for us a couple of times and failed?

Moore is a fine QB,,with the right pieces he might get you somewhere. I want to start identifying that QB that makes others around him better. The players playing differently when Moore came in had little to do with Moores leadership in my opinion and everything to do with timing.

Right on wolf. while you're at it, check steve young's stats the first 3 years in the league, when he was a Buc. Henne blows away steve young's first 3 years.

Gates had some pretty nice returns last year.

They better draft a few buses also. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be run over by Ireland and Ross next year this time.

What a guy!!! I can't believe we didn't keep him!!! People....We were lucky to get a bottle of water for this knucklehead. The GM, the coaching staff, & the players for the Bears will regret this move.

Nah, cant do that...its all about him right now...talk about egocentric, then again, miamis FO is pretty damn stupid becuase basically they DONT have a plan when manning rejects them....unless you count desperation moves in signing flynn

wolfman is correct

If rumor is true, Philbin indeed was the first naysayer on Marshall. Not his final call of course.

I've said i will have faith in Philbin's choices, and I'll stick to it, but Marshall is stretching the issue. Time will tell if Marshall melts down in Chicago, and/or we get a surprise talent to cover at WR from either current roster or draft - FA WRs look to be dried up.

Tough test to start with.

Agree with the guy who bashed Dusty. It's between Dusty and Ozkar for the stupidest people here. I am serious, but you guys are too stupid to even get that I am right. You are total bafoons.

Stoopid way to spel "buffoon".

Here's a novel idea for this team, instead of putting band aids on the most important poisition on the team, how about ACTUALLY drafting a guy. Tired of the A J Feely's, and Joey Harringtons and Ray Lucas and Trent Green. I think we could have that guy in Weeden. That's just my opinion of course. So we give up our second and perhaps one of the thirds this year to move into the first to draft him. If it's a bad move then draft a QB first next year. I don't really care. I just don't see anything particularly 'gambling' or 'taking a risk on Flynn'. To me it's just more of the same sort of ting we've been doing for years. I say again, if Weeden wasn't 28 years old this idea of drafting him wouldn't even be an issue. People should go back to the game against Stanford last year. He was every bit the equal of Luck in that game and stood tall in the challenge. Good poise and competitiveness. I like this guy.

Stupidest, Buffoons,Stoopid????

Now you guys are really confusing me

"Moore coming in and getting a bad team to beat a bunch of worse teams means nothing."

I disagree b/c when Henne was starting we were consistently losing to those so-called "worse teams." At least with Moore we were scoring points. Are you forgetting the struggles that Henne consistently had in throwing TD's inside the redzone??? I'm not saying Moore is a franchise type QB but there's no way we would have won 6 games with Henne last year. No way.

Oh boy, the saga continues with the ineptitude of the Dolphins' front office. I wonder how many tickets will sell this season and how many blackouts lie on the horizon.

We missed out on two coaching hires, traded away our pro-bowl receiver for third round picks, we won't land Manning, and we'll probably let Flynn slip away, although, I don't think Flynn is that big of a deal.

Ross, give it up man. Sell the damn team to someone who actually knows the business of FOOTBALL. Don't forget to take your trained monkey with you.

"The Miami Dolphins spoke with the agent for free-agent QB Matt Flynn (Packers) Tuesday, March 13, but did not offer a contract."

I guess Ireland called and asked what the price was before he even really considered going after Flynn. He is all about the price first. Cheap team, cheap owner, cheapskates.

Ive been writting for weeks, or since the day Manning was released, that Manning will NOT sign with the Dolphins, no matter what. Does this need repeating? Mr Ross why look like the redheaded, freckeled faced, ugly gal at the dance looking for Mr Right? You aint it sport, give up this idiotic idea Manning will sign with the Dolphins. Move on or move out which ever and sign Flynn if you want to or roll with Matt Moore and wait till next yr. People have gotten the idea that the Dolphin front office is run my Larry, Curley and Moe and they would be correct. Ross has made the Dolphins the laughing stock of the NFL and its getting worse by the day.

Jack I just think you're taking a short sighted look at this. I know you dislike Ireland, that much is evident. I'm just asking you to be a bit more objective in your criticisms.

"Matter of fact, we should have gotten better last year once Ireland brought Bush in. This, after getting rid of the (1st or 2nd) most prolific running tandem in Dolphin history."

Prolific running tandem? They went on to be back ups on their new teams because they were washed up. And you're saying Reggie Bush who ran for over 1000 yards and caught for close to 500 yards and 50 catches was a down grade? He did this behind the 28th ranked offensive line with two different qbs, in a lockout shortened season, on a team with a dead coach walking who hired his inexperienced son for an assistant role. How did this prolific tandem do on their new teams? Ireland did the right thing and didn't over pay for over the hill rbs who can't start in the league. And you see that as a bad thing?

"See the pattern Phins78?

Get rid of good players and replace them with bad players. Bush didn't even show up until the last quarter of the season."

And you're blaming the fact that he wasn't used properly in the offense until mid-season on the gm? This is why I think you just have some blind hatred for Ireland. You don't look at anything objectively when it comes to him. The guy set a Dolphins record for rbs with the most catches and yards together in a season I believe. I just don't see how you think keeping two backups who wanted big pay checks would have been the right choice.

Craig, agree with the Weeden love, but confused...
Why do we need to trade up to get him?

He'll be definitely available at #8. And very possible at #42. Trade up MAYBE to the top of the 2nd (use our newly acquired 3rd rounders)?

At worst we can trade down for two 1st rounders lower, and that would work as well.

Got two lovely 3rd rounders extra to dangle too. OOooooo, shiiiiny!

Gotchya JS, good points.

They will trade him in two years for two 4th rnd picks....then the next team will trade him two years after that for two 5th rnd picks....then he will either go to prison or he will retire.....or he will play for the Allen, Tx Wranglers of the IFL like T.O. is doing.

By the by....T.O. looked like a shadow of his former self even against a bunch of never were footballers last weekend. I was there.....50 yards and a TD against a bunch of never have beens. That said, he was the best player on the field and it added some excitement to what is otherwise a pretty boring league, IMO.

If we dont get Manning, Ross better lower ticket prices.

JS...The Marshall Trade was a shock to me...This team isn't full of top tier talent. So eliminating Marshall from the roster seemed like a bizzare move. I have to believe it was meant to be a message that you can't continue to act like an entitled third grader. I do not know the details of what happened in the nightclub..for all I know Marshall could be completely innocent of any wrong doing. For the team, it didn't matter. Enough was enough..This incident made the choice an easy one, especially since it has been reported that the 2 teams had some talks about the trade prior to Tuesday..

I hope that the team has a plan to replace the production we lost..I don't think there is 1 player out there THIS YEAR that is going to match Marshalls totals..Hopefully with a good group effort, and solid scheme the team will find a way to be productive...It is going to be all about "The Team"

Weeden is going to be 29 in October so his window of opportunity is very small & IMO that's just too big of a risk for a 1st round pick. Maybe a team takes him & they catch lightning in a bottle right away but I don't see it.

I don't want to keep beating this topic because I'm not 'against' Flynn or necessarily 'for' Moore but some of the things you are saying about Moore, you could say about Flynn. What did Flynn have at stake in the shootout won against the Lions? GB was already home and cooled off. Nothing at stake for them.

What I think some of us are saying is there was a noticeable difference EVERY time Moore's team took the field, with the exception of the first game against the Giants. When he started the following week the team was 0-4 and not 0-7. It would probably have been easy for the team to mail it in every week, as the Colts and Rams did every week last week. Moore 'rallied the troops' every week, so to speak, and they were competitive every week. Compare that to the week 2 game against the Browns, when under Henne they had ZERO energy. It's not Moore's fault that the team folded on defence in games against the Giants, Cowboys, Broncos and Pats. He had the team positioned nicely to win those games and the defence caved.

Should have said 'the first game against the Jets'. For me, that was the ONE game where they lacked energy. Much better from that point on.

So now the bills have the best de in the league basically. Everyone wants to have playmakers and improve, and we pretend to want it while Ross and Ireland get rid
Of playmakers

If it were Andrew Luck who is a lot more polished & a guy I think has a chance (can't tell until Sundays) to play well right away then it would be different.

I'm done arguing this Jack. You're right, Ireland was in charge of everything and Parcells was just his little whipping boy who had no responsibility for the team makeup. You win.

With Marshall, Wayne and Garcon out of the picture, Manning will never join this trainwreck.

Dont worry, Irescum is on the 20 year rebuild plan. HAHA

The more I see and hear from Cousins, the more he impresses me.
He'll be the surprise of the rookie season, and become the unquestioned team leader wherever he goes. Kid has a solid head on his shoulders, and leads men.
Took charge on MSU's pro day like a general and had the scouts buzzing.

Like em, like em, like em.
Imagine a QB that handles media interview's like a pro, and commands the huddle on the field.
He made all the throws at the combine, aced his interviews, impressed at pro-day .. not to mention won at MSU. What more does the guy have to do?

Somebody will miss out on him, and I hope it isn't us.

Forget Payton Manning. And I don't think The Dolphins are that hot for Flynn. Unless it's a real cap friendly contract that matches that of a backup QB. Start thinking Tannehill, Weeden or the kid from Michigan State.

We have draft picks the flashes came in practice. People were constantly bringing up his name and he was roasting our dbs. I was really hoping he would get more action in games but Sparano didn't like using talented players preferring instead to stick with "nice guys" (seriously, Sparano said this when asked about the Colombo signing, "he's a good guy" sheesh!). Would have liked to see what he could do when being used properly.

But you're right, Jury is still out on last years draft. They contributed a bit but lets see how they grow. Same goes for Ireland in my mind. He has this season to prove himself. Then I'll join in the mob if he doesn't.

JS and We Have Draft Picks,

I stand corrected. I thought he was going to be 28 in October and not 29. I think this guy could start in the league from day one. I think he's this years' Andy Dalton, in terms of poise and maturity.

JS, I'd be fine with them taking him in the second, I just don't want to see the team missing out on him, as they did with Dalton last year. I don't know if for a fact but I wouldn't be surprised if Ireland was targeting Dalton in the second and not having a second round pick hurt him. I'd prefer we not miss out him again.

JS, I'm all in for a QR in the first, and I've that means we need to trade up for Blackmon then so be it.

I'm confident Ireland will find us another Pat White.

I'm done arguing this Jack. You're right, Ireland was in charge of everything and Parcells was just his little whipping boy who had no responsibility for the team makeup. You win.

Brandon Marshall has had 17 off the field incidents since he graduated from college that have been investigated by the NFL & law enforcement officials. This is nothing new for Marshall. If you want players that like to beat up women (yes he beat up his wife last year & he is now being accused of punching another woman in the face) then you're a MUCH worse human being than someone like Steven Ross or Jeff Ireland.

Stephen Ross is that doofus in Jr High who stands near the punch bowl at the school dance waiting for the pretty popular girl to fall in love with him. It is truly sad...painful even.

I;m confident Ireland will aquander 3 picks on a 3rd string RB.

It's funny I'm not high on Cousins. To me, I see a lot of Chad Henne in him. Doesn't do anything particularly well. People talked about 'Robo Henne' and all that stuff....I see a lot of that in Cousins. I'm not saying you are wrong in your assessments of him, I'm just saying I don't see it.

Wow uhhh draft picks I was talking about Mario Williams and the bills, but u r retarded for it thoughts on Marshall

"Ireland added rookie talent beyond the draft, as Davone Bess had the second-highest single-season reception total in the last 40 years among undrafted college free agents in their rookie season,"

HOW IS THIS IRELAND'S SECOND DRAFT? Why is he taking credit for Tuna's drafts then? Why won't he give credit where credit is due? He's taking credit for the good players and firing everyone else for the bad players.

How is HE taking credit? Did HE write that article? Jack you are obviously a new fan. This has all been talked about to death. Parcells never talked to the media, hates them. Stayed behind the scenes and let Sparano do the talking. His philosophy was "one voice". Ireland never talked to the media either. You have to be fairly new if you don't know this. Welcome aboard my friend!

'Douches of Despair'......love it!!.....LOL.

I have a feeling the Ross/Ireland/Philbin marriage is not going to end well.

"....while Ross and Ireland get rid
Of playmakers."

I'm a retard??? What does this mean??? The only playmaker we got rid of was Marshall. Unless you meant us getting rid of Columbo or Carey or Langford who regressed this year.

We have draft picks get this! Someone actually stated earlier (when complaining how mad they were abut Marshall being gone) that we shouldn't balme Marshall for punching a 24 year old girl in the face because he was protecting his wife!

I guess it's okay to assault someone now based on the fact that someone you know MAY get injured. That's right, not a scratch on his wife from the women he was allegedly "protecting" her from. She didn't even swing, just was in the way of their exit and Marshall took upon himself to remove her. She was hanging with her sister and some friends for her 24th birthday. Happy Birthday,,,,,POP!

Short sided view? We haven't had a probowl QB in 16 years. Dan was the last. With a change to move up in this draft, we opted out. I don't even think we tried. If they planned on getting rid of marshall then why not offer up Marshall along with picks to move up.

nah bro! Its not a short sided view. Its a view without wearing the Ireland koolaid glasses.

How is Dallas better? Tuna and Ireland are like those necromongers in the Chronicles of Riddick. They move from team to team devouring all its resources. Then move on to the next team.

"Here's a novel idea for this team, instead of putting band aids on the most important poisition on the team, how about ACTUALLY drafting a guy. Tired of the A J Feely's, and Joey Harringtons and Ray Lucas and Trent Green."

Can't argue that Craig.

LOL!!! See Phins78...you think we're arguing and I think we're finally talking. Ireland's bio says he is the guy in charge of the drafts. You said he wasn't until last year. I proved you wrong and you run away crying.

So don't think Ireland is some kind of draft guru again. He has proven beyond a reasonable doubt he is not.

PS...I'm one of those people who didn't even want Tuna because he was on his 3rd retirement. Now on his 4th.

I hear ya Craig. I think we're arguing over the wrong guys though. I think we need to hold Sparano and crew more responsible for what went on last year regarding the Cleveland game etc. I'm not going to blame Henne for the team being flat. That's on the coach in my mind. And you're right, Flynn had nothing to lose in his starts, so I can't use that argument, it's a wash there. I just still see Flynn as having more upside. Just my opinion here, I don't see Moore ever becoming a playoff winner with the current make up of this team. We need someone who makes those better around him or we need to infuse more talent into both sides of the ball.

I'm getting in on this conversation too. First of all Ireland did talk to the Rams and deemed the price too high. Secondly, the Rams weren't interested in taking on players and big contracts. Thirdly, Marshall isn't the type of player Fisher would want on his team. Fourthly, there's not NEARLY the market out there for Marshall that you and others seem to think there is, as shown by how few teams showed any interest to him 2 years ago. You guys see the guy who caught 4 TD passes in the Pro Bowl this year and was MVP. That's not how others around the league see him.

Lastly, Parcells and the boys have been gone form 4 years now. The team has regressed from when they were there and have steadily gotten worse.

I agree on your Sparano comment. I just didn't see that Henne had it in him to rally the troops. Took me four years to see that.

You might well be right on Flynn. I'm just not into it at too high a price.

Posted by: Craig M | March 15, 2012 at 03:27 PM

Neither are you wrong as evidenced by the uphill climb he's having to do for respect.
BUT... he is climbing, from every report I've heard.

I get the comparisons to henne, but don't agree. Henne was a lummox. Two left-feet mentally, and locked in to targets when throwing. Actually, Henne reminds me of Tannehill to be honest. Nice kid, but not ready to lead or make winning decisions in the NFL.

Cousins is bright, decisive, commanding, and well spoken. He's not Rogers in arm strength, but closer to Matt Ryan, Brees. Guns it when he needs to, but takes a little off for accuracy at close range.

But he doesn't have the perfect gun like Griffin, or the power of Tannehill, or the smoothness of Weeden, so he gets knocked down a notch. He doesn't WOW anyone with athleticism, speed, or power. He just wins.

My opinion only. Bewteen Cousins or Barkley, I'd take Barkley, but they're not that far off. And we're not going to get a sniff of Barkley next year. Ireland has shown he's not willing to go that far.

So.. y'all make your choices. I'm happy with Weeden or Cousins, but Cousins is my top.
Tannehill will bite us hard.

The other thing people are forgetting in the slow start last year is that we had an entirely new offense and new coaches. Henne had 4 weeks to learn everything before his starts, Matt Moore had about 8 weeks. Matt Moore was further ahead at his start time in understanding the language and intricacies of the offense. He also had players who had been playing in it (during reg season games) for a while and those same guys when Henne started had only been running it in PRACTICE for 4 weeks.

Just a little shout out for Henne. Not a fan but mostly because his lack of leadership at the one position leadership is a must. But I hope he goes on and proves everyone wrong. I only wish the best for the kid.

Good news men!! We just re signed Steve Slaton for one more year!!

Sorry Jack. Not arguing,,,,debating :) You're right, it's all good. Been a good talk today!

"I have a feeling the Ross/Ireland/Philbin marriage is not going to end well."

Allthough just an opinion these are probably the tuest words spoken in here today! But I hope not.

all dol-fans can suck a di*k

I think Henne will end up having a good career. Of course then every one on this blog will dish the Dolphins for lettting him go.
