Is Manning really that into the Dolphins?

I've dated in my life. I know what it looks like when someone is really into me ... and I know what it looks like when someone really isn't that into me. (Insert jokes in comments section).

Anyway, free agency is a little like dating. You wine. You dine. You spend money. You chase. It is a date minus the flowers or candy. And so far, Peyton Manning has been on four dates in the last week since his release from the Indianapolis Colts.

He dated Denver. He dated Arizona. He dated Miami. And he dated Tennessee.

My issue?

He dated Denver in Denver over a two-day span. He dated Arizona in Arizona over a two-day span. He dated Tennessee in Nashville over a 9-hour span.

The Dolphins? They had to go to him. They got only five hours.

Does that sound like the Dolphins got equal treatment? Does it sound like Manning, who I reported yesterday is very interested in finding a strong relationship with his next team, got an ample opportunity to bond with anyone representing Miami?

Obviously, I am on the outside looking in. The Dolphins continue to believe they are in the game. They continue to wait on a final nod of approval or dismissive hand gesture to know how to proceed next. And for all we know, details of their visit with Manning included the free agent quarterback hugging every Miami rep and promising to sign as soon as he dispensed with one last visit.

But I doubt it. And it just seems from my point of view that even if the Dolphins are in this horse race, they are aboard a nag trailing the field. That's how I see it. That is increasingly how fans that email me, call my radio show and follow me on twitter view it.

How is it the Dolphins apparently haven't seen this?

Today, by the way, feels like a big day to me on the Manning front. My gut is we'll see some sort of indication from the Manning camp by tonight which teams are seriously, seriously in the running for the player. ESPN has reported every team that has interviewed Manning is in the running.

But eventually this is going to begin getting whittled. Arizona's deadline for paying quarterback Kevin Kolb a $7 million bonus. The Dolphins cannot continue to sit idle while next QB possibility Matt Flynn visits with Seattle. And one assumes the Titans, talking to several other free agents, also need indication which way this will turn.

So the end of the great courting of Peyton Manning seems on the horizon.

By the way, on another topic, Kendall Langford is scheduled to visit the Cincinnati Bengals today.

The talk is that Mario Williams is geting about $50 miilion in guarantees from the Bills. Can more games in Toronto be far off?

The Bills will pass us by if they sign Mario Williams.

The talk also is that Seattle is pretty serious about Flynn. We're going to find out pretty soon just where the Dolphins are in the Flynn sweepstakes.

Phins 78 @ 11:49...on point...as usual....

Todays reading is among the most depressing I have laid eyes on to date...and I have seen some sad posters in here a time or two....

Im totally ok with Matt Moore being our starting qb in 2012. Only two things will happen:

Either he will be feast or he will be famine. Either way we win.

If he's feast we have a great season. If he's famine we should have a 2013 top 5 pick. This means getting one of the two top qb's in the 2013 draft.

I love Luke Kuechly but I can't see us taking him at #8. Too many other needs.

IF no one sign Wallace to a contract (requiring giving up a first round pick to Pittsburgh) I would see if I could get Pittsburgh to trade us Wallace for our #2 pick.
Posted by: No Balls | March 15, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Why would they do that? It's not like they're actively trying to unload Wallace. He is a restricted FA with a 1st round tender to take him away in addition to at minimum, matching the Steelers offer...but probably besting it.

The Steelers have already tendered him $$$ wise (which is undisclosed at this point)....so any interested team will have to at least match that and give up the 1st round tender, otherwise he will be a Steeler (unless he refuses to play).

Craig M,

read my post at 11:42 regarding those 2 games.

As far as sayign he is a clear upgrade my main reason is Moore is not a fit IMO in a WC offense. He doesn't get rid of the ball quickly and accuracy is not his strength. He doesn't even appear from my naked, untrained QB he's not a fit is why I feel Flynn is the clear upgrade. It's not a fact just my opinion.

We agree to disagree.

You-all are acting as if We have been dominating the bills of late. All We do is split the season with them. We're both bottom dwellers.

I'm going to register today. I encourage anyone who is really a fan of this team to register also. Quit using fake names. I want real names for the record. That way, in 12 months, I can use your words against you or you can use mine.

With that said...

This team is headed nowhere fast. Ireland is not a GM with the balls, brains or boss to get this team out of the basement.

Looks like the great white Flynn is really wanted by Seattle. They will throw giants piles of $$$ at him...

ROSS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is why nobody wants to come here.

I find it hard to read all this stuff about Peyton having a problem with the 'circus atmosphere in Miami' but the team he's apparently considering has his owner making public statements like 'we've offered Manning a contract for life'. Seems pretty contradictory to everything that Manning seems to be about. The owner of the Titans is a complete bozo...hard to believe they are one of the favourites in this.

Man, you put Wallace, Gates on the Field is a guarantee the D has at least one Player on them, with the safeties paying close attention. It is.

Flynns contract will most likely be up to 8 million a year but 1/4 of that could be incentive based unless someone else tries to over pay and raise the market.

The only reason Flynn is being talked down is because the media are like little newborns. Dangle a set of keys in front of them and they're entertained for hours. Peyton being the shiny keys. Flynn was being talked about by EVERY newspaper and tv show as being a quality option as a starter. There were over a half dozen teams interested.

So all of the sudden he sucks? Did he break an arm or refuse to throw at a workout? Does he have nerve damage or want 20 million a year? Nope, Just proved every day in practice, meetings, film room etc. that he was a great teammate and future leader with great field vision, feet, accuracy, and on and on.

But Manning started his tour and everyone got distracted. Then somehow, mysteriously (seriously, someone needs to call Scooby Doo on this one) everyone soured on Flynn? What happened in between everyone wanting him to no one thinking he can start in the league. I mean you just can't make this stuff up. It's like a mass brain washing is taking place. He's still the same QB he was when people were clamoring about him and espn was calling him the next Drew Brees! WTF is going on,,,move on from Manning Ross!

You-all are acting as if We have been dominating the bills of late. All We do is split the season with them. We're both bottom dwellers.

Posted by: ozkar | March 15, 2012 at 11:57 AM

we actually swept them last season...just sayin, as far as bottom dwellers, Nobody circles that wagon like buffalo does, why do you think mario williams is breaking the piggy bank with them, it aint to win a championship, thats for sure!!!

The so called #1 WR that EVERYBODY says we must have....

You know...the Randy Moss's...the Brandon Marshall's...and the Chad 85's to a lesser extent....

You know what they ALL have in common.....

Thats what your ALPHA reciever gets you.....

Having Moore as possible starter makes the future much brighter than than Henne. In MM's 2nd start he completed a 20-25 yd pass to Bush where he dropped over a LB and under the Safety. In that same situation Henne would have thrown it over Bush or been picked off. That's when I realized Henne had no touch on his passes and the reason he was so inaccurate. So maybe the best thing would be to keep Moore and draft Tannehill who has definite potential to be a franchise QB.

Flynn seems like a standup guy. And I'm sure he can play football. I just don't want people getting their hopes up anymore behind this team. Time and time again we have had our hearts ripped out through our arses by Ireland and Ross.

How about this one? Manning goes to Broncos and Ross gets the QB he REALLY wants> Tim Tebow. We've already had Tebow day last year, why not every week?

We are no longer competitive with the Pats or Jets. The Bills are our new rivals.

So Yesterday's Gone, are you saying you want to continue wallowing in mediocre for more years? Come on,man.Just put your henne jag jersey on and you feel better, just like a loser!

Add T.O. to that list....

Ross is too cheap to get good players.

Im done with you. Read my post. I said over and over again "AT THE RIGHT PRICE".

I'm not willing to sell the farm on him but he has proven he can be successful in that system with talented players. What can you say about Matt Moore that he has never played in a WC offense and we have no idea what he is capable of.

You also act like you are speaking on facts that once teams adjust that he will still not be successful. We don't know the answer either way but we do know he knows Philbins offense and balled out in 2 outta of 2 starts in that offense.

Your right superPhin.Critical wins to Our playoff run!

By now, Mannig should know at least one or two teams he doesn't want to land into, and let them move on. What a lack of respect by him. What a lack of pride and self-respect of those teams.
I cannot emphasize that much: Miami doesn't need Manning. No team needs Manning. It is Manning who needs a team desperately. Manning is like an old wine in front of a dipsomaniac. You know that the wine is so old that very likely will have turned into vinegar but your crave is so great that you don't care instead of betting for a younger wine that you know it will be ok but won't be a Petrus.
Fisher comedy first, Manning comedy next, and wait...Flynn comedy is about to start.
Morons never learn from their mistakes. By definition they never acknowledge them. They will always be morons, it is in their nature. It is in Ireland's and Ross' nature.

The packers beat up on the league with a bunch of old men @ the wr postion the last few years....

Guys with sure hands....and the ability to get YAC....

Not ME...ME...ME guys.....

No shortage of fretting and hand-wringing going on here.

The phins have retained Solai and added a CB and have done it without sacrificing their ability to sign Manning, who, without doubt, will sign a low-money-down contract IF the incentives make sense.

If Manning chooses the Titans, speculation is that Hasslebeck comes available. IMO, signing Hasslebeck makes more sense if you consider the coach's offensive scheme and long term goal.

The phins also appear to be addressing the RT position. Signing Winston would be a major win.

Meanwhile, the draft is deep in WRs, so, please stop whining about Marshall. He was not reliable when it mattered most. Truth is, this is the perfect time for a new coach to clean up the locker room. Hopefully, V. Davis is paying attention and realizing that it's time to get his act together.

All that aside, I'd rather spend another season watching Matt Moore at QB, as opposed to overspending for an unknown quantity like Flynn. In fact, I'd be really interested to know what Moore could do with the benefit of a full off-season, camp, pre-season, etc. The notion that he can't operate the WCO is baseless.

Who is Ross and Ireland going to blame next? If this team sucks another 2 or 3 years will Philbin be on the sideline saying,

"If I don’t call timeout we’re all (explicit). Now I'm getting fired.”?

Hey, nobody is indispenssable in any area of Life. Anybody dies, Life will go on, forever.

Let's hope that Manning or his agent has the professional courtesy of telling the teams not in the running their decision by this Friday so they can move on.

I'd have no respect for him otherwise.

All of you that are down on Matt Flynn - take a second and go watch the NFL films of him against the Lions last season.

You will see that he was very accurate both short and down the field. He also showed good pocket awarness, he was able to slide around in the pocket and keep his eyes downfield completing passes or when needed throwing the ball away to avoid a sack.

He looked very comfertable running Philbans offense. What you need to consider is that as a back up QB, he doesn't get a lot of practice with the first string wr's.
So I beleive that he is the real deal and Miami needs to forget about Peyton and get busy signing our next franchise QB.

$8 million a year for Flyyn is CRAZY money in my opinion. I would pay that. I'd wait for Kolb at a reduced price or I'd trade up in the first with one of those thirds to draft Weeden. Just as good an option at a fraction of the price. I'd spend the money elsewhere. Tannehill if he drops might be an option in the draft too. I'm much more on board with the prospect of getting Blackmon or Floyd in the draft.

The Dolphins are not a laughing stock because of Ross/Ireland....the Dolphins are a laughing stock because of the pathetic fans. Who would want to play in Miami in front of these ignorant fans? Who would want to play QB in Miami where you're never going to be given a chance to grow and develop...and where the fans will simply start chanting names of QBs that aren't even on the roster to replace you?

It doesn't matter who the QB is or who the WR is or who the RB is or where they were drafted or if the were FAs...in the mind of the Dolphin fan, they're all busts even before a single ball has been snapped and a single down has been played.

Dolphin fans have zero patience...they want everything yesterday....they don't understand player development...all they want is a messiah. They think that a 4th round pick is a "bust" if they don't make it to the pro-bowl in year one.

A Dolphin fan can can look at an Andy Dalton in Cinncinati with envy...but had Dalton been drafted by the Phins in the first round, Dolphin fans would have said what an idiot Ireland is. Dalton would have been considered a bust even before he took the field. Dalton could have put up the same stats he did with Cinncinati with the Dolphins, and Dolphin fans would only be able to see the interceptions and the negatives. Dolphin fans would already be screaming to draft another QB....saying one season is enough to know this guy doesn't have "IT"

The Dolphins are truly a laughing stock....because of us....because of we "fans". For shame that most of us even call ourselves that.

Seems it just wont penetrate that thick skull of yours that "2 meaningless games" is absolute proof of nothing. It doesnt even prove we would be at least getting "Chad Henne" in signing Matt Flynn. The Jaguars didnt think so. They signed Chad Henne. LOL

jack sparrow Ireland wasn't in charge of the first three drafts, he was Parcells protege. Do you honestly think a know nothing first time gm who was being trained on the job BY BILL PARCELLS was allowed to make all of the decisions while Parcells say by and twiddled his thumbs? Then why was Parcells studying game film at his hiome in Saratoga every summer? Why did he have all that tape sent to him if Jeff was making the calls? Hell , why was he here at all?

I'm just wondering why everyone gives that fat piece of crap complete deniability when we KNOW he was the one making the calls. Why isn't Parcells held accountable when he was here to turn the franchise around. Love the "Parcells pass".

Irelands first draft and off season was last year. That is the only thing we can logically judge him for. Just calling for a little objectivity. Not saying I'm an Ireland fan, I'm just willing to let this season play out before forming a concrete opinion. Not enough tape on Ireland yet for me.

Parcells (sat) by. Damned typos.

I thought guys wanted a guy who could throw down the field. A guy who could open up the passing game. I thought that was one of the kncks guys had on Henne. Too much of a dink and a dunker. For the most part, that's the style of QB Flynn is. I'm not saying he's a weak armed QB but in now way does he come in here throwing the ball all over the field. I'm confused what's changed in people's thinking.

Ireland is not an nfl gm. He's a glorified talent scout. Thats it, end of story. LOL

I've already lost respect for him as it is, We've been unofficially eliminated from manning weeks ago and for him to actually still consider us is just plain moronic, but Our front office believes that we still have a chance...they also believe that this team is not rebuilding, just a sad state of affairs al-together...ARZ must be sweating up a storm right now given their situation with kolb*lmao*

The Signal,

Exactly @ 11:50! I don't understand how my words are being misinterpreted over and over. People are reading what they want or just using their biased against Flynn to state their opinions.

FA 101 you need a market to create a price tag. Manning knows where he is going to sign but it's good business sense to have multiple teams in the running so they outbid each other. What great business sense to have as well as having Stephen Ross who spends lavishly and Bud Adams involved as well who said he will give Peyton a blank check and won't be outbid.

Flynn on the other hand never had many suitors outside of Miami, Cleveland and Seattle. He is labeled a "system QB" and rightfully so. However only 2 teams are interested in him the team whose coach who previosuly coached him in Philbin and Seattle who also runs a WC offense. Seattle initially held out hopes for Peyton and once Peyton said KC and Seattle were out then the visit was scheduled with Flynn only 1 day into FA and Miami on the other hand isn't in the spending mood and I can't say for sure but why else would Philbin speak with Flynn other then to tell him let me know Seattle's offer and we will see if we are willing to match it if it's reasonable.

Yesterday's Gone,

I'm not saying Flynn is "all that", but the Detroit game, where he set Green Bay franchise records, was not a meaningless game. Detroit went all out, playing for the #5 seed if they won.

Looking more like Peyton will sign with Tenneesee. Dude's even sporting "Volunteer orange" while bandying about. If I had to make a bet on Manning's landing spot. It would be Tennessee.

Your post at 12:06 pm is spot on. Totally agree. If Dalton had given us what he did last year, people would say he's not a 'difference maker'...'he's a game manager'. Ridiculous! Andy Dalton for a rookie had a great season. I see Weeden as this year's Dalton. I'd be prepared to take Weeden late first in a trade up. No way I wait for him to fall to us in the second. Take a chance and go and get this guy. If he wasn't 28 I'd be convinced he's be a first round pick, maybe even top ten. To me, Weeden is an Ireland kind of pick.

Thinking of starting my own Dolphins blog for the fun of it.....who would visit?

Again your football acumen has shown me you are better off just reading and not battling wits with me when it comes to football. The 2 games Flynn played in showed us more then any other rookie has showen us? Correct. Miami is in the running for guys like Weeden, Tannehill and Foles not the franchise guys like Luck and RG3.

Outside of that the Jaguars don't run a WC offense which Flynn showed he can play in.

Go watch the film of Flynn vs the Lions. then come back and tell me he can't throw down field.

What you refer to as "Flynn style" of Dink & Dunk is what we call the West Coast Offense!

NFL.com has a film highlighting Flynn vs the Lions. It shows (I think) every pass play during the game. watch it and see how he handles himself.

Believe it or not, Im really not looking for a catfight with anyone here concerning the Miami Dolphins 2012 football business. One thing for absolute certain that does exist. Is the fact none of ever get anything we proposed and talked about in these blogs anyway.

This we all know to be fact! LOL

Kris is such a pus, I can spell his wet arm va gay gay through my computer speakers.

Don't be surprised if Manning pulls of the surprise....

I see things the EXACT OPPOSITE of Armando...

There comes a time in most guys life...when they realize that the nice guy doesn't wake up with the girl in the morning....while the bad boy..who she is always complaing about is doing regular booty calls 2 times a week...

you nice guys know what i'm talking about...

You wine her...and dine her....and listen to ALL her problems and dreams....and when you bring her back home....she leaves you @ the door step with a hug (hand pat on the back)....and calls me....

Thats what I liken the FINS to in this situation...they aren't spending the money...they are confident....and they are just waiting for the payoff...

I dont give a flying sh$t manning goes YG,

Im sick to death of hearing his name , I just hope his health insurance is paid in full cuz defenses are goung to bull rush his @ss like no other when and if he starts next year week one...

I didn't say Flynn can't throw the ball down the field but so much of the WC offence relies on YAC. There's a lot of that in the game against the Lions. When you think of Flyyn you don't think of a guy who comes in and airs it out. If guys think that's what they are getting inLFynn they'll be disapointed.

Ross wants star power to sell more tickets.

Manning is the only FA QB that can achieve that goal.

I believe Ross won't withdraw his interest unless Manning tells the Fins he's going elsewhere.

If Manning goes to Denver as other blogs are speculating, Ross would make a serious push to get Tebow.

Tebowmania has the potential of selling more tickets for many more years than the two to three years Manning has to offer.

"SI's Peter King believes Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill may not last beyond the draft's first four picks.
If interest in Tannehill continues to grow, the Browns will be in excellent position to auction off No. 4 pick. That is, of course, if they decide not to draft him. Tannehill's next, and perhaps last, opportunity to solidify himself as a surefire top-eight pick will come at his March 28 Pro Day."

This is getting weird for us @ QB. IMO--Manning is out & I have no idea how much interest we have in Flynn so I thought our fall back option is to start Moore & then draft Tannehill (based on Sherman's knowledge of the kid) @ 8 & then bring him along. However, if Peter King is right(& who the hell knows) Tannehill could be off the board. So then what??? I can see Ireland trading down to pick up a a pass rusher, a RG, or the WR Steven Hill from Georgia Tech. I know people like Floyd on here BUT the kid has had three documented incidents that indicate he MIGHT have a problem with alcohol so that's a legitimate concern.

I'll say this and Im out.

Curtiss Painter didnt look bad when playing for Manning in a couple meaningless games when they sat Peyton because they had everything concerning the playoffs clinched.

Now look at what the hell happened when Painter had to play an entire 16 game season and week after week actually had dc's game planning for him. There's just not enough here to say for certain Matt Flynn isnt just really "curtis Painter".

Thx man, Im out.

Overall i LIKE the way the Fins are handling the Offseason. Going into the offseason I saw the following priorities in rank order.

1) GET A NEW COACH - Cowher and Gruden stayed with the media. WE went hard after Fischer but he decided to go with a good QB and better draft picks. Ok, so we fall back to an up and coming Assistant in Philbin who has a good football mind, access to good assistant coaches and from a proven organization who BUILDS teams in Green Bay. I would give them a B+.

2) GET A NEW QB - They didn't stand pat and resign Henne. They did all they could, without an existing relationship to pursue Manning. The did so believing in the only available evidence that he was healthy. Everyone knew the competition would be crazy so why do we believe this would be a slam dunk given the amount of cap space and no existing relationship? They didn't given up the entire team for an unproven RG# (Thank goodness). They are still open to getting Flynn IF Philbin thinks he is worth purusing, either as a starter or as pure competition for Moore. And they avoiding jumping out day one and pay too much for Flynn. They read the market correctly. They also still have a chance for Tannehill and Weeden if they want to pursue them. So what else at this point did anyone expect the Fins to do? I would give them an A (at this point).

3) ADDRESS NEEDS AT DE/OLB, NT/DT, RT, CB, WR and S - I was shocked at what they did with Marshall but given the pending news and the fact that the new coach was not overly sold on him they got what they could before the market completely fell apart with "punch" news. They just signed the other Marshall who provides flexibility as either starting CB, Nickel CB or FS. They kept Solai and didn't overpay. He can play NT/DT keeping options open for 3/4 or 4/3. They luckily won the coin flip and have the better 1st RND pick, who they can use on QB, OLB/DE or WR as needed after Free Agency and best available talent. They added a 3rd round pick so they can still address needs in 2nd and 3rd rounds. Overall I would give them a B.

So, let's be patient and not call for anyone's head just yet.

I am concern about how the Dolphins are processing through the free agent market.
For instance, we have not move on obtaining a top notch receiver. Tampa Bay, on the other hand, signed Vincent Jackson. They also signed guard Carl Nicks to crank up their offense line. We could have use him on the other side of Jake Long.

Are we putting all our eggs in one basket waiting for Peyton to make his decision?
If this were speed dating and Miami got just 5 hours out of Manning while the others got two days plus change, I would look else where pronto!

Either way, if Manning goes to Denver, I am only 6 hours drive from Mile High stadium. It will be fun watching the Broncos kick butts with the Patriots.

Craig, that is a little high. And if we're thinking that you know gms are as well. But if ONE person sees something in him they will pay it. And I'm afraid Seattle will over pay and force us to up any offer we might make. If Seattle doesn't screw us I believe Miami could negotiate an incentive based package. They would be well within their right to ask Flynn to prove something to earn that extra money. Say you give him 5 mil a year with 2 mill wrapped up in performance incentives (500,000 if you reach 3000 yards, 500,000 for ten tds, 1 mil for 20 and so on) Then you give him a workout incentive at 750,000. Whatever. I'm not a gm or capologist but you see what I'm doing.

8 million guaranteed is too much so as long as Seattle doesn't screw the market I don't believe we will have to pay that up front.

By the way, nice job by Ireland yesterday landing Soliai. I'd given up any thoughs of bringing this guy back because I thought the contract would get too crazy. I like the money and I like the term. I didn't read too many of the comments yesterday but my guess is that not to many accolades were handed out by the faithful on this blog yesterday.
