Jeff Ireland speaks to the media

Jeff Ireland is calling various media outlets today to share his viewpoint of what's going on with the Dolphins since the start of free agency and going forward.

About the idea that no one wants to come to play for the Dolphins -- a thread that has even hit national media following Miami's inability to land Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher and Peyton Manning, among others:

"I absolutely think players and coaches want to be here," he said. "When we talk to people about the Dolphins, they still think highly of this franchise, its history, its direction. They have no problem coming here. And sometimes they don't. Sometimes they make other decisions. But it's a two-way street. We make our decisions also."

Ireland declined to be specific regarding the reasons Matt Flynn, Alex Smith and Peyton Manning did not come to the organization. Regarding everyone except Manning, he said, "Most of the time these decisions are about money."

As I have written previously, the Dolphins' pursuit of Flynn came with a caveat: They wanted him at their price. The contract Miami offered Flynn was not as lucrative as the one offered by Seattle. I have also learned the Dolphins stopped their chase of Smith when his price was above what they were prepared to pay.

Ireland declined to give details of any negotiation except to say he "would not be reckless" in making a move that could potentially affect the club's future. Ireland called the Dolphins a "storied franchise," and pointed to the club's commitment to return to that better past. He said owner Stephen Ross is spending over $1 million in updating the club's Davie, Florida training facility to make it more comfortable and football friendly for players.

The club is redoing the locker room among other places.

On the all-important quarterback issue, it seems clear the Dolphins are done (for now) chasing veteran options. Ireland confirmed what newly signed quarterback David Garrard said earlier: Garrard and Matt Moore will compete for the starting job in 2012.

There will be no further chase for Smith or any of the current free agent options on the market. Ireland, however, did not rule out selecting a quarterback in the coming draft.

"There's a chance of that," he said. "Let it run its course."

But in the meantime, Ireland said he is thrilled with the idea of adding Garrard.

"I've been chasing this guy since last year," Ireland said. "He's athletic, he has arm talent, he's got veteran experience, he brings great leadership. We went with a veteran at the position and we talked to Matt and he understands we need to play better at quarterback to get over the hump. So they'll compete and we'll see what happens."

As a result, Ireland seems content for the time being. But if an opportunity comes open, he would study or even chase it.

"Where we are at this juncture, I'm happy where we are at the quarterback position," he said. "You have to remember we're not even halfway through the player acquisition process. We will continue to leave no stone unturned. We have a process in place that we're following but we're also being flexible. And that means when opportunities arise, we bring players in, we talk to them, we work them out, we visit to see where they're at. And then we make decisions.

"I'm not naive to the fact we need more pieces. People think we're blind to that but we're not. We need to have another solid draft. But we're not where we're going to be in August."

One player the Dolphins will not be pursuing is Denver quarterback Tim Tebow. Ireland declined to discuss the topic other than to say, "he is a player under contract to another team so I can't talk about him."

But multiple highly placed club sources have told The Herald today there will be no pursuit of the former University of Florida star. The reasons for this is the Dolphins are unwilling to revamp their offense to suit Tebow and highlight his obvious strengths. The Dolphins intended, instead, to run a West Coast offense in 2012.

The Dolphins traded receiver Brandon Marshall the first day of free agency. Ireland was vague as to the reasons for that trade except to say, "There was not one singular event or singular incident that made us" make the trade.

Marshall was involved in an alleged bar fight in New York the night before Marshall was traded.

Ireland said the trade was made after discussions and in agreement with coach Joe Philbin, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, and yes, owner Stephen Ross. "We all felt it was in the best interest of the team," Ireland said.

The general manager also said there is no resentment by either party on the matter. "Brandon came by camp yesterday and we sat for a while and before he left we gave each other a hug," Ireland said. "There's no hard feelings there."

The Dolphins hope Yeremiah Bell has no hard feelings because on Monday night when Ireland spoke to the strong safety to him him he was being cut, he added that if he found no suitable takers in free agency and the Dolphins had still not filled the strong safety position, the club would be open to taking Bell back. Despite this, Ireland confirmed that for salary cap reasons the Dolphins did not offer to give Bell a pay cut. The club saved the full $4.3 million in salary Bell was to count against the cap.

Ireland is aware that his cutting of Bell ran counter to every indication he gave to the media publicly and to agent Drew Rosenhaus privately. "When I spoke with Drew a couple of weeks ago, I had no intention of making this move," he said. "But things change. Sometimes the allocation of resources makes it necessary to change direction and you make decision that you previously didn't think you'd make."

Ireland called me just after I returned home from the club's training facility. Outside the facility, approximately 20-30 people were gathered across the street protesting the job Ireland has been doing and calling for his ouster.

"I've heard they're out there," Ireland said. "But I haven't seen them. I don't have a window that gives me a view of them. And we've been pretty busy around here to look anyway."

for 96 million dollars! Can't blame him!

The Dolphins have been chit for so long they're evaporating.

Screw Manning, he is a fake, no class hick. He took a former Denver players retired jersey number. Huh? No respect. The number was retired by the org, but Peyton Ego Manning is bigger than the org and their history. What a clown. I hope he plays one game and craps out.

Peyton fool is fooling himself and the Broncos. He is so far off from game ready he will go out there and embarrass himself. He will be remembered for choking a bunch of playoff games and trying to come back gimpy.

Did all of the people at the riot have a day off?. Garrard is a backup with a QB in this draft or Barkley in the next. No need to riot Ireland right now. I would have been more upset if we overpaid for Smith or Flynn (or trade for Tebow). I think Philbin has a nice draft plan, we'll see.

Philbin has no draft plan. He is not the GM. Do you have any clue what you are talking about?

Im sure they asked him when they interviewed him what he wanted to do with the 8/9th pick (at the time). They're not going to hire a new head coach and not ask his input on the draft. Ireland scouts and handles that but Philbin (specifically with Tannehill and Sherman connection) will have some say

There are several reasons why the Pats and Jets are on Top....Jack.

Here's what I 'Know'...

Every Business large or small, has it's own internal
"Company Culture"

From what we've heard...
the Dolphins' "Internal Culture" might be the most dysfunctional in all of Football..

1) NFL Players around the league think that Jeff Ireland is a crass WEASEL. They don't believe most of what he says and many are afraid that they'll eventually get screwed if they come to Miami.

2) The Dolphins Business and marketing side (From the owner on down) is running EVERYTHING

They go
B-o-n-k-e-r-s
for Celebrities.
Stephan Ross was probably willing to buy Payton Manning an OIL TANKER if he would have come to play for him for the final two years of his career.....but has passed on quality Tight Ends for the past 4 years.

If Matt Flynn could also SING then I'll bet things would have been different.

The Word is getting out that that Miami is a weird place to play football...they have managed to alienate most of the pure 'FOOTBALL' Guys who create supportive environments.

By the way... if Tony Sparano was so bad then why did the Jets make him their New Offensive Coordinator?

It's safe to say that Rex Ryan MUST have respected Sparano as an opponent for THAT to happen.

Fire Ross!

Gotta give props to the protesters today.

Talk about some HARDCORE fans!

I wish I could've been there!

I dont know odin only 30 people show up. if im ireland im thinking only 30 die hard fans showed then I must not be doing that bad. People hyped it up like a clan rally was on its way or something. So everyone says tannehill is two to three years awat from nfl readiness. What if miami drafts him and has him play wr while he learns the nuances of nfl qbing? That way he helps at wr and learns how secondaries play and he sees a cb's thought process. All while being coached up by philbin and sherman.

Yeah..Sammo....but 'surprisingly
the National Media got wind of it.

It made f-r-e-a-k-i-n-g ESPN

The "Star Struck" Owner CAN'T
be happy about that.
.
.

Oh Snap, Its Odin,Dude where you been?

Thats true mr.scott. But say ross fires ireland today who takes his place? Polian maybe but I was never a fan of his defensive acquisitions . I always thought he lucked out with peyton and rode that horse till it broke down.some have said philbin but doesnt he have enough on his plate as a first time head coach? Im not an ireland fan or hater im nuetral and will wait till the end of this season to decide.

Lotta madness swirling around the team...OUR team.

The situation with Ireland vs the world has reached a pinnacle...he better hope the team can win some out of the gate to relieve some backlash pressure.

One of my favorite sayings in the world is perception is reality. Although Mando took his best shot at defending the Ireland choices many anger filled ranters will just keep stewing on perceived (real or not) blunders.

As for blunders Ireland has had a number of them but that bizarro combine sequence with Dez Bryant seems to have put him on the wrong side of the scrutiny map. ESPECIALLY since it seems they weren't drafting the Dez anyways. Why try and turn over that rock Jeff? Just doesn't seem to make any sense.

While most people are NOT acknowledging that Dez Bryant has been MORE than a handful of babysitting and coddling. He has been a decent but definitely not some crazy star. I believe WR Blackmon will be a slightly better and more consistent version of Dez but not a superstar like Fitz's ilk. Michael Floyd has the bigger Pro style frame and is faster than Blackmon. Time will tell but I would take Floyd over Blackmon.

Still puzzled why so many want a 29 year old rookie? That leaves almost no room for learning curve as he must produce from jump street to get good value. Can't sit him for two years to learn right?

Cheers,

cote sucks @ 1:41

Fire the Owner?????????????????

Are you kidding me? Yeah please fire this second wealthiest owner that actually spends money and get a Bidwell type owner that pinches pennies all the time.

Never! I wouldn't vote for that.

Sure he makes mistakes but he is still a newer owner and I will bet he learns from past gaffes.

Spin the owner wheel and end up with worse...no thanks.

Cheers,

Sammo....I didn't mean to sound as if I thought that Ross will fire Ireland...

I don't know what might cause that to happen.

But here's what I believe...

The game Stephan Ross is playing is MUCH LARGER than Professional Football. If the Dolphins start winning he will use that as a 'channel' to try to sell people everything from Skin Cream to Aluminum Siding.

Winning the ' Sales Game ' is what motivates this guy.

...and the more **'Glitz'** the better

The Dolphins are just a vehicle.

Sadly...his counterproductive approach cheapens the game.
THAT is the biggest reason why the Patriots got GRONKOWSKI while the Dolphins have ignored several quality Tight Ends during the past 4 years.

We should be thankful that most NFL Owners are more interested in 'Football' rather than potential sales.
.
.

Yeah if it was all about endorsements and quick money to the owners the football side and effort put in by the players would sink titanic style.miami has missed out on talent at te and is quite ironic that when they finally smarten up they run into a weak class.

Jeff ireland is a straight up loser. I'm not gonna renew my season ticket as long as he's a gm. Every year we get worse. What player did he ever bring in. Not including bush. Nothing he's like portugese futeball " chiefs n cowboys paying him bonuses to ruin the team.

No one will join this team because starting actually in pewee league players put all thier trust in the coach. But if the gm back stabs his coach of coarse everyone's gonna talk. Done.

I hate to use the phrase "it is what it is" but heck it's true these days in Miami. For the record I hate what Ireland has done so far dating back since prior to the trade deadline last year where he made no effort to unload players like Marshall, Bell, Fasano, Dansby and even Long (considering his contract expires next year) for much needed draft picks and to get rid of bad contracts, and through this offseason where the biggest non-move was not Manning or Flynn but the failure to sign Eric Winston at the ridiculous bottom price of $22 million for 4 years that KC inked him for despite of Winston's preference to play here (you know they had to horribly low balled him considering his desire to play here and no state income tax).

But IT IS WHAT IT IS, so hopefully Philbin and Ireland can put together a nice draft day. At this point you have to figure Tannehill was their fall back plan all along, he has to but we now depend on Cleveland not to pick him, a massive gamble if you ask me. If he falls to 8th (and it is still a reach but this team has to roll the dice now or it will be in jeopardy to become the Los Angeles Dolphins) here is my mock:

1st rd: Tannehill
Late 1st, trade up: Stephen Hill, WR, GT (2nd and 3rd picks)
3rd rd: Derek Wolfe, DE/DT Cincy, 6'5", 295 lbs, both 3-4 and 4-3 defense
4th rd: Jamal Fleming, CB, Oklahoma, 5'11", 203 lbs strong, 4.43 40-dash
5th rd: Cordarro Law, LB, Southern Miss, 6'2, 262 lbs strong, steal at 5th
6th rd: Joe Long, OT, Wayne State (could become a RT, brother can mentor him, if successful it may help team retaining the pro bowler, could become a nice story and boy do we need that).
7th rd: Adrien Robinson, TE, Cincy, 6'4", 264 lbs, ran a 4.45 sec 40-dash (!!!), 39.5 vertical and 11-3 broad jump; only played one season as a starter, very raw but lots of upside and great value at 7th.

No offense people, but what makes you guys so knowledgeable? I get tired of reading people's negative and most times, quite nasty posts about the team. You have your right and that is fine. I am not arrogant enough to demand anyone post a certain way.
Here are the facts:

WE DID NOT HAVE 19-20 MILLION PER YEAR TO SIGN MANNING!

FLYNN IS A JOKE AND HE IS NOT WORTH THE AMOUNT FOR WHICH HE SIGNED!

I AM GLAD WE DID NOT SIGN ANOTHER FEELEY OR OVERPAY FOR SMITH. SMITH WAS A FAILURE UNTIL LAST YEAR!

MARSHALL WAS A TEAM CANCER AND DROPPED 4-5 TD PASSES AND COMPLAINED ALL THE TIME. HE IS A DIVA AND NOT EVEN WITH THE TALENT TO BACK IT UP. WE PAID A GOOD PRICE TO GET HIM AND HE DIDN'T LIVE UP TO HIS OWN PAST PERFORMANCE SO WE GOT WHAT WE COULD FOR HIM.

Let's try to give these guys a little credit.

He is still employed with the phins??

I'll be so happy when all you bloggers who hate the dolphins, and are fans no more quit writing on the dolphins blog!!! Maybe you can CHEER for Rex Ryan and his merry band of FAT MEN up there, their so good!!! We win the first game and everyone will be cheering like school girls!! Mando how do you stand it?? I'd take more vacation. They act like Tom Brady's up for trade with a 3rd round pick.. I'm not a big David Garrard fan but, lets see if we do good before we shake the baby!!! New head coach, seems intellegent, new system,(sherman) seems viable,, lets just wait and see before we burn the stadium!!!

No doubt ... Ireland has to go, he has become the face of polarization. He talks about out glorious past. But no-one has contributed more to our demise than him and Parcells.

If you think things are bad now, wait until the preseason not even the season begins and we lose a couple of games or we have a bad showing.

IRELAND

A 40,000 A YEAR SALESMAN AT BEST IS OUR GM ,THE DOLPHINS ,THE TEAM OF SHULA,DAN MARINO AND THE GREATS...............

OUR TEAM IS BECOMING COMEDY CENTRAL AND STILL IN THE CELLAR ......

I think David Garrard as the face of the Dolphins is appropriate now.

Ireland has had one draft where he has had final say. One - last year! All of the other drafts were manipulated by Bill Parcells and if any of the players worked out, Bill would take the credit. If they didn't Bill would hide behind Jeff and say he is not the GM. Look how long it took Bill Parcells to admit that he picked Pat White. Bill Parcells is just like Larry Brown of the NBA. If the team wins, they take ALL OF THE CREDIT. If the team loses, they blame the players and say they didn't play the right way. Both are jokes. Let Jeff Ireland build this team to match what Coach Philbin wants and needs. Tebow cannot play in a West Coast Offense so he is not needed here. Most fans on this blog hated when Ireland brought in Matt Moore last summer but he was one of the top 4 QBS playing the last two months of the season. So these armchair GMs need to pipe down and let the offseason play out before going off the handle.

WOW! No wonder, just listen to Ireland's quote, "Ireland declined to give details of any negotiation except to say he 'would not be reckless' in making a move that could potentially affect the club's future."
Yeah, no kidding even if it would IMPROVE the future of the franchise!
Armando, you're kidding right? When you say he is not to blame or do you really believe what we all know and that is that is Ross AND Ireland are fools like no others in Football history. Really, think about this in 10 years - the owner that brought J-lo and a night club to a football stadium WHAT!?!?!?!. Not to mention all the truely talented prople who RAN from the franchise when offered a job.
On your radio show this morning you said this isn't the worst time in Franchise history and you cited the Ginn, turn your thumbs around...........can you imagine what the fan response will be now? No yelling and booing, you'll be quivering under your chair as the riot erupts!

Ireland is a lying POS and the worst general manager in the NFL. The fact he has a job is a clear indication Stephen Ross is some whacked out deviant (likely a child molester) that Ireland has damning photos of. Perhaps he has some of Ross having sex with a Donkey.

Liar, Liar, pants on fire(land)!

You Beat Writers kill me. What bunch of Ireland Apologists. So afraid to attack him it kills me.

I love what Tebow has to offer. Granted, he's not the ideal fit for the west coast offense Miami intends to run but it's not like we have a proven offense that we better not mess with. C'mon, Man! We are hurtin fer certain. We need a new hero. No hard feelings, Danny. I still love you, man. Grab Tim, Jeff. You won't regret it. And by the way, Mr. Ireland, we don't hate you. Don't be so defensive. Just make some good choices, starting with TT.

poor matt moore...he's been thrown under the bus so many times this off season yet he did a great job particularly once he got his sea legs....if we didnt have such a screwed up offensive line we would have made a playoff run....you cant give up 50plus sacks and expect to make the playoffs....i always liked garrard but i think matt will beat him out easily in camp..go fins..glad some of the ex dolphins are giving matt some love...i wld draft richardson if he is there at #8 just to bring some excitement to sun life and really take the presure off moore. i know its a passing league but this guy is a once in every 10year talent that you cant pass up

Its not just about his lack of success Free Agency during his tenure. Great teams build through the draft. Ireland's biggest downfall by far is that "The SCOUT" had done sooooo poorly with our draft picks. its the main reason why the franchise is constantly rebuilding. Our 2nd and 3rd round picks end up being 6th and 7th round talent. Our 1st round picks give 2nd and 3rd round value at best. I could honestly say with extreme confidence that a monkey throwing darts at a mock draft board would have put us in a MUCH better position than we currently are. Its as if we have been a NCAA team stripped of all but 1 or 2 scholarships each year. If we dont crush this upcoming draft, and i mean at least a B+ grade, then Ireland should resign and go back to scouting pee wee leagues.

But we are getting new locker room.....that is like arguing about what station is on radio as your car is going over a cliff....

Ireland is demonstrating his incompetence when he says, "even halfway through the player acquisition process", the calendar isn't the clock that matters. What matters is making players and coaches come to the Dolphins!!!! If all he did was add Peyton or Mario Williams in the first couple hours of freeagency, it would make the dolphins better and would put fans in seats. Losing on the field, in the press and in free agency is what he seems to be good at.

FIRELAND

Would love to see the Polians At Miami, Jason Taylor, Dan Marino....Football people who love what a Great franchise means in the NFL. No more re-treads from Dallas! Miami still is the only franchise in NFL History to win every game on their Schedule....all the other GM's and teams hate us for that. Let's bring the Dolphins Franchise back to the top where it belongs instead of the laughing stock of the league. No-one believes in Ireland Get someone else in there!! Come on Mr. Ross. Have you ever seen "Fan" protest their own team before??? Go Fins!!
