Jeff Ireland speaks to the media

Jeff Ireland is calling various media outlets today to share his viewpoint of what's going on with the Dolphins since the start of free agency and going forward.

About the idea that no one wants to come to play for the Dolphins -- a thread that has even hit national media following Miami's inability to land Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher and Peyton Manning, among others:

"I absolutely think players and coaches want to be here," he said. "When we talk to people about the Dolphins, they still think highly of this franchise, its history, its direction. They have no problem coming here. And sometimes they don't. Sometimes they make other decisions. But it's a two-way street. We make our decisions also."

Ireland declined to be specific regarding the reasons Matt Flynn, Alex Smith and Peyton Manning did not come to the organization. Regarding everyone except Manning, he said, "Most of the time these decisions are about money."

As I have written previously, the Dolphins' pursuit of Flynn came with a caveat: They wanted him at their price. The contract Miami offered Flynn was not as lucrative as the one offered by Seattle. I have also learned the Dolphins stopped their chase of Smith when his price was above what they were prepared to pay.

Ireland declined to give details of any negotiation except to say he "would not be reckless" in making a move that could potentially affect the club's future. Ireland called the Dolphins a "storied franchise," and pointed to the club's commitment to return to that better past. He said owner Stephen Ross is spending over $1 million in updating the club's Davie, Florida training facility to make it more comfortable and football friendly for players.

The club is redoing the locker room among other places.

On the all-important quarterback issue, it seems clear the Dolphins are done (for now) chasing veteran options. Ireland confirmed what newly signed quarterback David Garrard said earlier: Garrard and Matt Moore will compete for the starting job in 2012.

There will be no further chase for Smith or any of the current free agent options on the market. Ireland, however, did not rule out selecting a quarterback in the coming draft.

"There's a chance of that," he said. "Let it run its course."

But in the meantime, Ireland said he is thrilled with the idea of adding Garrard.

"I've been chasing this guy since last year," Ireland said. "He's athletic, he has arm talent, he's got veteran experience, he brings great leadership. We went with a veteran at the position and we talked to Matt and he understands we need to play better at quarterback to get over the hump. So they'll compete and we'll see what happens."

As a result, Ireland seems content for the time being. But if an opportunity comes open, he would study or even chase it.

"Where we are at this juncture, I'm happy where we are at the quarterback position," he said. "You have to remember we're not even halfway through the player acquisition process. We will continue to leave no stone unturned. We have a process in place that we're following but we're also being flexible. And that means when opportunities arise, we bring players in, we talk to them, we work them out, we visit to see where they're at. And then we make decisions.

"I'm not naive to the fact we need more pieces. People think we're blind to that but we're not. We need to have another solid draft. But we're not where we're going to be in August."

One player the Dolphins will not be pursuing is Denver quarterback Tim Tebow. Ireland declined to discuss the topic other than to say, "he is a player under contract to another team so I can't talk about him."

But multiple highly placed club sources have told The Herald today there will be no pursuit of the former University of Florida star. The reasons for this is the Dolphins are unwilling to revamp their offense to suit Tebow and highlight his obvious strengths. The Dolphins intended, instead, to run a West Coast offense in 2012.

The Dolphins traded receiver Brandon Marshall the first day of free agency. Ireland was vague as to the reasons for that trade except to say, "There was not one singular event or singular incident that made us" make the trade.

Marshall was involved in an alleged bar fight in New York the night before Marshall was traded.

Ireland said the trade was made after discussions and in agreement with coach Joe Philbin, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, and yes, owner Stephen Ross. "We all felt it was in the best interest of the team," Ireland said.

The general manager also said there is no resentment by either party on the matter. "Brandon came by camp yesterday and we sat for a while and before he left we gave each other a hug," Ireland said. "There's no hard feelings there."

The Dolphins hope Yeremiah Bell has no hard feelings because on Monday night when Ireland spoke to the strong safety to him him he was being cut, he added that if he found no suitable takers in free agency and the Dolphins had still not filled the strong safety position, the club would be open to taking Bell back. Despite this, Ireland confirmed that for salary cap reasons the Dolphins did not offer to give Bell a pay cut. The club saved the full $4.3 million in salary Bell was to count against the cap.

Ireland is aware that his cutting of Bell ran counter to every indication he gave to the media publicly and to agent Drew Rosenhaus privately. "When I spoke with Drew a couple of weeks ago, I had no intention of making this move," he said. "But things change. Sometimes the allocation of resources makes it necessary to change direction and you make decision that you previously didn't think you'd make."

Ireland called me just after I returned home from the club's training facility. Outside the facility, approximately 20-30 people were gathered across the street protesting the job Ireland has been doing and calling for his ouster.

"I've heard they're out there," Ireland said. "But I haven't seen them. I don't have a window that gives me a view of them. And we've been pretty busy around here to look anyway."

2010 INTS

Eli Manning 25
Drew Brees 22
Brett Favre 19
David Garrard 15

The only way to get through to Ross is to stop going to the games and stop buying merchandise - listen, I know its hard - I want to go to the games too - but it is in the best interest of this franchise to run this fraud out of town on a rail. I hope Donald Trump or Mark Cuban buys the team - these guys win at all costs and will not stand for losing.

"You have to remember we're not even halfway through the player acquisition process. We will continue to leave no stone unturned. We have a process in place that we're following but we're also being flexible."

So...we're looking for our players under rocks? How many rocks are left out there they we haven't looked under yet?

AJ Feely vs Jay Fiedler
John Beck vs Chad Henne
Now Matt Moore vs Garrard
Has any team with a competition at QB ever gone to the Super Bowl?
Posted by: Mike | March 20, 2012 at 06:33 PM

Dude....what are you talking about? Fiedler "just wins"....he's a winner baby! He was 11-5 and 11-5 in his first two years with the Dolphins. Can you say winner?

Oh wait.....yeah....I forgot....the Phins won despite of Jay Fiedler those first couple of seasons.

Not reckless in making a decision that could impact the clubs future????????

What future, you moron? You and the puppets you work for have absoultely positively ZERO football intelligence and probably (based on results) ZERO business saavy.

Beginning with the idiotic move and slap in the face to south florida fans of celebrating Tebow or Gator day-that is an opposing viviting teams QB was celebrated on our field in front of fans many or mopst of whom are also cane fans

Second- these names will describe the negotiating power of the Miami Dolphins past and present when describing the QBs that followed Marino:

Jay Fiedler
Damon Huard
Cleo Lemon
AJ feeley
And now- the topper- David (I have a herniated disc Garrard)

ARE you serious?

IvAn, do you also agree with not signing a player at any position that could help the team, for going on 3 years now? Do you agree with the fact that this team hasn't had enough playmakers anywhere to consistently compete? Do you agree with the lack of acquiring talent in the draft or FA to fill those holes? This has been going on for a lot longer than this week Ivan. Wake up, it's been three F'n years!!!

The only thing that Ross understands is $$$ - stop going to the games and stop buying mechandise - this is in the best interest of this franchise. This fraud needs to be run out of town on a rail. I hope Donald Trump buys the Dolphins or Mark Cuban - neither of these guys will stand for losing. Jeff Ireland couldn't be a janitor for either of these guys let alone in the front office. I want to go to the games too - but I have too much invested in this team to let these two chooches run it into the ground. They will not get another cent from me.

Why won't anyone tell me how Belecheat game plans against Garrard? Typically, Garrard likes to pocket pass like all our other QB's did. However, D-Gar is mobile. How is Belecheat gonna plan for that with the 31st ranked defense in the league?

Ireland has been trying to match the patriots instead of outwitting the patriots. This is a good move by Ireland. Not many good moves by him but this is a very good move.

This organization can't match up with the Patriots on a talent level. Not now and not ever as long as Brady and Belecheat are there. They need to OUTWIT the patriots.

Right now the QB is the most important position in all of sports. The Dolphins QBs are a never was and a never will be.
Should have traded some picks for RG III - they wil make the worst picks anyway so why not trade them away.

Garrard will be hurt by the third preseason game. He'll be lucky to throw 20 passes this year for the Dolphins. He's cacked.

Jeff Ireland is a liar

Jeff feels he must lie to do his job

Jeff thinks lying is a normal part of doing business

Nothing will fill these seats besides winning, remember gerrard really can be a decent qb, n matt moore we all know can be good....that was a good speech, but I believe he should of said suttin about recievers, that's what we need most...ocho, t.o , anybody ...maybe the draft but these guys wont say nothing so another team can look at what andd who they r looking at....everyone ireland know if he don't pull this together he is done ....trust n believe thhat..I was mad and puzzled this yr. But with philbin, I believe we will be alright....let's play these cards and the season is still months away...y.bell was ga good strong saftey I think, but money wise is the issue, let's just see how stuff goes.

You guys are a bunch of wet panties. Big deal we didn't get Peyton. Big deal on Flynn do you really think he is a franchise QB when only two teams showed interest?

The team will be competitive. Say what you want about Garrard, he is a better backup than Losman, Henne or Devlin.

With a high 1, a 2 and two 3's, we can get a good WR and a QB.

Stop whining.

Armando is also a liar

Most Latinos are Liars

Armando lies for no apparent reason

Just had a thought. As long as we are in a division with Brady and Belecheat then we will always be second best. Or fourth best. The Pats will always be the favorite as long as Brady and Belecheat are there. No way can Ireland match balls and talent with the Patriots.

What we need is the element of surprise.

Jeff Ireland has already tarnished Philbin's tenure in Miami. I cant stand having this idiot in control. Hey Jeff, when Parcells left he said "Run the team" no "Ruin the team". Please go away....

Stephen Ross still owns our team ?

The Dolphin's franchise has reached a new low

All the NFL world is laughing at the Dolphins franchise

Ireland has very poor people skills

Ireland should not have a speaking part

That's why Ireland waited in the car during Peyton Manning talks

Peyton wanted to speak w Dolphin super fan - Home, not Ireland the liar

Home would have landed Peyton Manning, but Jeff embezzled all the money and only had a small amount left in Ross's Miami Dolphin account

You could be right about Garrard Jack. I certainly hope you are. He did have a good run with Jacksonville and people were surprised they decided to go a different direction.

I think he has that stigma where he was undrafted and teams and fans have a hard time accepting that those guys are for real.

I think he was he was either a non drafted free agent or a late rd pick.

Now we gave up the MVP of the Pro Bowl w 4 TDs for a third rounder

Problem is it is very hard to get a WR like Marshall even in the 1st round

Good work Ireland

I will say this: It would serve Ireland well to do a LOT more media outreach like today.

Because in the past it was was mistakes (some quite small and a couple of them very significant) that defined him. If he only keeps quiet all the time, then those mistakes tend to grow and when the team doesn't do well, then the situation becomes much more negative than it might otherwise be.

I'm not saying I agree with all of Ireland's moves as a GM. And I understand he cannot share everything that happens. Still, outreach and a positive message is the way to go.

After all, if the personnel moves do not work out and the Dolphins tank again, then it might be helpful to have had some positive outreach in getting another season or another GM position.

In short, being humble, somewhat more open, and more accessible will only help the Dolphins and Ireland, especially in the perception by fans and the media.

We all know it's been a lost decade for Miami football. The issue of QB seems far from resolved and that's something that will hopefully be addressed in the upcoming draft.

I've not often praised Mr. Ireland's work, but I will say that today, he did a good thing in reaching out to the media and sharing some of the things that have been going on. Good job Jeff.

Home your a POS. You said Manning was coming to Dolphins. You lie!

You guys need to realize something. THE PATRIOTS WERE PRETTY DARNED GOOD BEFORE BRADY! The Pats been good for some 16 years.

I guess y'all forgot about the Bledsoe days.

The Pats are built to last. Its owned by an owner that knows what the heck he is doing or at least hands over the reigns when he doesn't know what he is doing.

Garrard levels the playing field because the PATS have been using the same formula for 16 years. What is the formula? We are the best in the AFC EAST because no one else wants to get a franchise QB. Not saying D-Gar is franchise but he is mom and pop doing very well in a corporate world.

ireland is the worse gm in football, ive been a fin fan since 1968, wheres the dolphins of the old days, we need to get ireland out and the scouts.

Yawn, again.

“When I spoke with (Bell’s agent) Drew (Rosenhaus) a couple of weeks ago, I had no intention of making this move,” Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland told the Miami Herald. “But things change. Sometimes the allocation of resources makes it necessary to change direction and you make decisions that you previously didn’t’ think you’d make.”

I'm sorry but the last time I checked the only new signing was Garrard. Please don't tell me we just paid Garrard over $4 Million.

Sorry ivan. Here's the other side of that...

The problem isn't Flynn or manning. I agree with you those would be risky stupid investments. The problem is blowing RG3. We now have no chance to win next year no matter what. Aside from that, and by ANYones definition, Ireland hasn't the tiniest idea what he is doing other then destroying this team. We are a league laughing stock and will be in last place in the afc east for years to come. There simply isn't enough bad that can happen to Ireland. He's an idiot and should be fired from the dolphins and barred from any pro football position ever. The reason I say that is you almost have to consider that he's doing this on purpose. No one person could possibly be this incompetent.

This guy shouldn't even be allowed to post.

The protest today had about 40 people outside nd Hundreds of others manning Twitter

So Armando once again is lying to u guys so he could get more interviews w Jeff Ireland

Of course Ireland looked out the window
Again Ireland lying

Armando & the Latinos always lie
That is how they are brought up, to lie

Okay, I don't post often, if at all, but I'm going to speak here, as eloquently as I can, about that state in which I see the Dolphins organization under the management of Jeff Ireland. I'll give Ross some leeway as he's fairly new as the owner, and the fact that he's just the owner. Yes he's the man who signs the paychecks and ultimately gives the greenlight, but Ireland is the football mind that sets up the situations and the decisions to be made. I hate that The Herald is doing such a horrible job of maintaining objective reporting and honest truth brokering. Ireland must be judged not on one or two bad decisions but on his body of work and who he is as a person as it pertains to the organization. Given that we all have to admit he is anything BUT good for the Miami Dolphins. Has he had some successes? Yes, albeit small ones. Has he had misses? He's missed more than a cross-eyed dart player without glasses. In addition his professional persona, whether real or perceived, and we all know that there's not much difference in this game, is poisonous, rotten fruit. So he absolutely thinks players and coaches want to be here? Tell that to Ryan Clark, Peyton Manning, Jeff Fisher, Jim Harbaugh, Matt Flynn, etc. He wants players at HIS price? At Ireland's prices the Dolphins must resign themselves to the basment of the AFC East for years to come. If he's too cowardly to take responsibility for his actions or to take action to help correct some of his previous actions then he's unfit ot be the GM of such a proud and storied franchise. He has failed to bring in a franchise quarterback or make any kind of splash in free agency. If anything the team is worse off than when FA started. We re-signed some players, yes, but let a true #1 WR go. Then we didn't fill that position. We let a true leader go in Bell, with nothing to show for it, but enough cap space to sign a QB no more fit to run our offense than our current back-up-in-charge. He says the Dolphins are happy with the QB situation, meaning there will not be much further action on his part on that front. How terrible is that? His "reaching out" to the media was a pathetic grasp for some sort of lifeline to help out his position. Unfortunately in this sink or swim business of Xs and Os, no matter how many life preservers the few employees in the media will throw him, the fanbase is far more willing to let him drown. Hopefully Mr. Ross will not let himself, nor the rest of this great organization go down with him.

Right now, this second, I have a 12 year old girl who knows nothing about football at home and she is immeasurably more qualified than this jacka$$

Sorry ivan. Here's the other side of that...

The problem isn't Flynn or manning. I agree with you those would be risky stupid investments. The problem is blowing RG3. We now have no chance to win next year no matter what. Let's look on the bright side. Miami is a hot city so someone will make one of those feel-good movies about the Dolphins in the Magic City a few years from now. It will start off with the ugly litany of failures and incompetence we have today. Lot of beach scenes with players in pain, embarrassed and angry. The owner will sell the team to someone with a clue who will find two people: a talent guy and a dynamic coach. The coach will identify a core of players already on the roster and make them play up to that talent. The talent guy will make a few calls and and bring in several guys that nobody else wants and dynamic things will happen all around. This has happened before. Lots of times. The 49ers are the most recent example but the championship Dolphins fit that story. The GB Packers of the 60's did as well. Many or most of those players from those teams that are in the Hall are there soley because this did happen. No Shula - no HOF for those old boys. No Lombardi - no HOF for those real old boys. Belichick = HOF for Welker. It would never happen here for that guy playing for the succession of clowns we had had coaching this team. Only thing standing in the way of this story is the old crone - Ross.

So now we have NO #1 WR

Cuz Marshall's wife got hit in the face w a bottle

Jeff Ireland panicked and fired our best player getting almost nothing in return

Then he let our defensive captain and leading tackler of 4 yrs in a row walk away w no contract

The team sucks and so do Jeff Ireland

We need a top name recever, and a r.t right now let's get these solved asap...trade up for blackmon, if not idk bout flloyd, but pats will give ocho for a 7th rd no questions asked, and he is a great recever, pats are dumb not to of give him a chance ....ocho on your team in the super bowl n don't use him ...stuppied, but we need a deep threat, tall and fat dude that can jump....and we need another slot, ,fast with good hands,....I really think chad and t.o would do great with gerrard or moore.. still got reggie ....we would be alright than at that point we can sign a recever and the rookie can learn.....or even trade a first rd. For wallace, dudes nasty, and picknup wheedon not tannehill, please NO TANNEHILL, WHEEDON IS WAY BETTER WATCH THE FILM

Legite, I shouldn't be allowed to post but you have no answer. Dude being a fan doesn't mean just blindly accepting every stupid thing your team does. Believe it or not the fact that these morons are in these jobs doesn't mean they should be. We are officially a joke and it's this dipsticks fault. Period

Who thinks we will ever be favorites in the AFC East with Brady and Belecheat?

All we can do is stop the bleeding first. Hope Brady and Belecheat die from heart attacks.

Garrard stops the bleeding! I see us being second best every season if Brady and Belecheat are still breathing.

All NFL network staff is laughing and throwing their hands in the air all day today regarding the screwed up Miami Dolphins

but Armando talks w the liar Ireland and spins a "every thing is fine story"

makes u wanna puke

Dolphins Suck

I agree to hit this front office where it hurts: the money bags. I used to buy hundreds of dollars of merch every year in addition to watching games. I haven't paid a single cent for anything Dolphins related in the past three years and don't intend to until they get it through their thick skulls that they OWE the fanbase something of which they can be truly proud!

Armando did u wipe off your chin after talking w Ireland?

Didnt even read it!! Ireland!! $##@%%!!!!!

Dolphin attendance will be at an all time low

Jeff spent all the money on young male hookas

Ireland is the type of guy that follows people even when the cops tell him not to.

But he is no dummy. Even he knows his job is at stake THIS SEASON. Anything less than 7 wins and Ireland is a brown stain on my underwear. HE KNOWS THAT!

Money means more to some than doing the right thing. I think Ireland has finally freed his mind. So now his arse will follow.

Does your ass hurt after meeting with Ireland?
I guess the cash they gave you to betray the fans will ease your pain!
You know what we do to traitors?

Jacksparrow ......I agree 100 percent ...things will get brought together, ross does wanna abe a good winnin owner ...I no that and ireland know if he don't make a playoff run he's done so, things will be ok...shherman was a collage coach last yr...he has a winning nfl record he nos his stuff ....and philbin did greta at everything he coached

mando you are nothing but a Fins Front office beatch...i'd say "grow a pair", but i think thats unrealistic for you

so glad we have Omar and the Sun S!!!

Jeff, really? Your fans are protesting, what are you doing man! Quit already!

Ireland must not be getting much sleep if he was forced to hold a press conference and call Armando

Ireland and philbin shouldn't be worried about attendance. he should only be worried about winning. If you win they will come.

The way I see it there were only 3 or 4 players in free agency worth overpaying for if you had an area of need.

Those are players who straight up dominate their positions. Manning,Mario Williams,Winston and maybe Nicks.

In the end we just did not have the money under the cap to sign Manning, Williams, or Nicks. Although Winston was doable with our cap I'm guessing the Dolphins felt good enough about Murtha not to max out our cap with Winston.

I personally am optimistic about John Jerry. He was playing well at the end of last season.

I would like see us sign mark Andrerson so we could use the 1st rd on a QB if theres one we feel strongly about.

Again I don't think they should overpay for Anderson though as he's not necessarily dominant at the position, just a stop gap.

The only thing i don't get is while i understood the need to feel out the market on Manning. Why weren't they more realistic about the possibility of actually getting him, knowing their cap situation and projecting that optimism onto the fans?

I mean we're a pretty savvy fan base. After all most of us have been here longer than our last several FO's.

Is your mom a prostitute?
Because you are!!!!

Don't some of these people have jobs to be at...my gosh talking about to much time on your hands!!!

Has Ireland been Fired yet? why didnt you do it yesterday Ross??!!

I guess you were using your super esp powers to figure out whos on here...

The problem with Ireland can be summed up at the end of the article. Instead of coming out and saying that he sees the protesters, and he is also upset the Fins haven't been winning and he is disappointed we didn't land Manning, the dumfuk says he has no window and he is to busy to look. No connection with the fans.

I keep reading posts about the reasons we didn't get Manning or Flynn and happen to agree with alot of the reasoning and posted similar aprehensions about those 2 players before. That isn't the problem, the problem from my point of view is the following.

1) A complete lack of any actual plan with certain positions like DL constantly getting addressed while other position like QB are ignored out of a sense of fear. You have to have a plan and go with it through conviction or whatever you want to call it and sink or swim while Ireland seems more the deer in headlights.

2) Am I the only one who looks at this team and feels it incomplete?? Ireland IS a good scout but your GM has to be able to construct a team and he simply seems overwhelmed by the task.

Wow! not only is Ireland a pompous A-hole he is completely dillusional about the situation of the franchise. A freaking MONKEY could do a better job. We are in serious trouble for years to come even if he gets fired, somebody will have to undo his damage first, before starting to move in a positive direction.
