Manning decision to Denver still affects Dolphins

Several media outlets are reporting that Peyton Manning has picked the Denver Broncos as his new team and is in negotiations with the team to become the quarterback. That has created a domino effect that reaches the Dolphins.

Because Manning did not pick the San Francisco 49'ers, it seems to open up the possibility of a return to San Francisco for Alex Smith. And that would mean the player who visited the Dolphins on Sunday would be out of the running to continue his career in Miami.

This is not a 100 percent certainty as, frankly, Smith still is a free agent and has the right to negotiate with any team he wishes. But, as I reported this morning, Smith had told various NFL sources and had let the Dolphins know his first choice was to return to the Niners if Manning didn't pick that team.

We're not out of the wood yet, however.

As Manning is going to Denver, barring a snag in contract talks, that effectively ends Tim Tebow's time with that team. And, of course, that makes the Dolphins a possible landing spot for him.

Tebow, a University of Florida alumnus, has a huge following in South Florida. He did lead the Broncos to the playoffs and even a playoff victory over Pittsburgh. And he would definitely sell tickets for the Dolphins.

My guess is the football side of the organization would not be thrilled with the idea of Tebow because he is definitely not a classic West Coast offense quarterback. But ownership has recently been in charge of some football decision in Miami so I cannot discount it until, well, the Dolphins either say it isn't a possibility or show it isn't one.

Beyond that, where does this leave the Dolphins?

More and more it is looking like this team is going to be drafting a quarterback and rolling into training camp with Matt Moore as the presumed starter.

I suppose David Garrard is a veteran backup option that can be added to Moore plus a rookie draft pick as well.

As for a surprise bombshell ... we'll see.

If you know my posts at all, you know I've been against all this FA QB chasing form the start. Manning was my 3rd best option, but first two invlove drafting. I'm tired of band-aids, retreads and painting gold on a back-up and calling him money.

Flynn wasn't worth what Seattle paid, and would've stunted our growth in the future because we'd spend another multi-years waiting for him to develop and be the guy we paid him to be .. and he won't. And in the meantime, we would've draft on chase other QBs to replace him. Henne 2.0.

Manning was a shot, we offered the moon, and it didn't happen. Didn't happen for a lot of teams. No shame IMO.

Smith is worth much, and is worth WAY more with his current team. He failed under EVERY other system until Harbaugh came. Apparently that's his only real shot at success. So nothing missed there either.

IF Philbin really believed FLynnw as his franchise guy, this would've worked. But If Philbin isn't sold, WHO the heck else knows better?

Once the draft comes, and we have a shiny new QB to play with, have many gloom and doom fans will feel better?

How many will feel better when our rookie boy outplays Flynn?
When our rookie boy is on the field and Manning is nursing injuries on the bench?

I'm nto saying all is rosy. I'm saying, it has a good chance as any of being rosy.

Just wait. I'm still excited anyway. Way more than I was when we were wining and dining Flynn.

BLOG FODDER- i saw a cheap delorian in the penny saver, wanna go in halves with me??

Our coaches may like to run the West coast but we dono't have the players. Moore gives up the ball too often and our recieving corps are amongst the worst in teh league.

Our Defense and running game are healthy. Add Tebow and we may have the best running offense in the league. this offense take will time off the clock helping out our Defense. A running offense is less likely to leave short yardage situations for our Defense. Draft a pass rusher and the Defense will be dominant.

Baltimore, Texans and the 49ers all made the play offs on good defense and a run based offense. Brady can't beat you if he's not on the field.

Surely the coaches are able to coach more than one style of play?

Oh God, please don't make me have to be a supporter of Tebow (which I will begrudgingly do should he go to the Phins). Please spare me the humiliation and hypocritical stares given to me by my Denver Bronco loving family. Please spare me this utter embarassment.....or at least provide me with a nice bucket to puke in every Sunday.

If Tebow comes to Miami I won't watch a damn game this year.

Full the life of me I can't figure out why Soliai signed a two year deal to stay in Miami when he could've gotten more money somewhere else.

Let's see...Ireland didn't upgrade the QB position, he didn't sign a WR, he didn't upgrade the RT or RG position. All in all I'd say he deserves the NFL Executive of the year award. Of course I'm sure he'll be able to hit on all of those needs in the draft right??? LOL!!!!

Bad typing from previous post:

Should read
"..we would'nt draft or chase other QBs to replace him. Henne 2.0."

Tebow to Miami, Notre Dame WR at 8.

Good luck in Denevr Manning...especially after 4 neck surgries...and possibly a 5th....make sure you stretch that neck and shoulder real well.....

Kris was the biggeest supporter of Manning, ignored all the downside risks. Now that Manning is going somewhere else, he all of a sudden recognizes Manning is damaged goods.

Kris, welcome to the YG/DB club.

Why wasn't Henne signed to a one year deal!!!

Garrard of course to compete but really second or third string is where he would probably be headed.

I can see Ross making a big push for Tebow. He fits the "star power" mold and will sell tickets, initially at least. And I can see us giving up our first round pick to Denver to get him. Not saying I'm in favor of it, just that I can see it from a mile away.

if they sign tebow i am absolutely out!!! i will box up my dolphins gear till he and ross are both gone. the detroit lions will be my new team. just can't root for the steelers after all the abuse i've taken living in pittsburgh and rooting for he fins my whole life.

i'll come back to the blog to make fun of the dolphins though!!! if they sign tebow it will be an easy target!!!

Why is nobody on the Suck For Geno Smith bandwagon yet?

THESE ARE NOT MOVES BY IRELAND...Stop giving him credit for the free agent quarterbacks we wanted who passed ON US!!!!!!!!!! DO YOU GET THIS???????????

Come on people. There is a huge breakdown going on here in Miami. Do not give the general manager credit for this. He deserves nothing for these moves nothing. This wasn't a case where Ireland was the one who passed in favor of a more prudent plan..You are lying to yourself if this is what you believe. I hate to be so obtuse. But Ireland is getting credit for this today..like he had done a good job, like he has saved cap space..WHAT FREEKIN CAP SPACE?? We were 6-10 and we have little money to sign anyone..Rookie quarterbacks included.

I will breathe for a second..Ok. PErhaps there is a bigger plan. Perhaps the team is going to avoid signing high profile free agents..I'm down with this if at some point the architect of this team could prove he was competant. IMO Ireland gets this last shot..This year to do something. IF this team finishes 6-10, worse He has to go. I will make a public apoligy to the guy if this team can finish 500..That is all I am asking at this point...500..It is sad.

To clarify, I'm ok with the non-signing of QBs so far. What I'm advocating, is NOT signing any at all.
Just draft, baby.

Not sure who's driving the boat you and I are on, but we're definitely sailing on the same one. With ya bro.

What is your problem? Are you a real-estate developer trying to stir the pot for a new stadium. Not going to happen pal. Quit bitching about the stadium. You have not made a single comment about the team or the game of football.

FYI SF old candle-stick will be empty this year. going to new stadium in Santa barbara.

He is an example you have neglected to detail however most succesful team in last 10 years. Foxboro. NE's stadium is closer to Providence then boston out in the country. There was nothing there but a dog track until 5 years ago after the SB championships. Since Kraft built a mega entertainment center around an empty place. Teaming with Wynn to build casino there. Can be done easier then a new venue. The stadium had nothing to do with championships. Coaching and FO did.

Keep comments about transactions not the stadium. Getting lame.

If Tebow comes to Miami, everyone should know that Ross is the one pulling the string and his only goal is to sell tickets not win a Super Bowl.

Another season down the drain before the season even starts. Of course the Patriots just signed Brandon Lloyd & Daniel Fells. Apparently the rich just get richer.

I think Ross goes after Tebow, to help him sell tickets in the short run.

He eases Philbin's pain by instucting Ireland to draft the qb in the draft targeted by Philbin, hopefully taking care of the long run.

how many people really think Flynn worth 28M? Cmon

Posted by: Tigre | March 19, 2012 at 12:44 PM

When will the excuses end? Wake up man. Only 10 million is guaranteed. He isn't going to make anywhere neaar 28 million. Phins could have had him for a reasonable price but, they are in frugal mode.

Stop making excuses & trying to justify us missing out on any viable, worthwhile QB option.

JS @ 12:49 - Excellent point. I have nothing against Tebow. What he did with Denver last year deserves a lot more praises than criticism. But I agree with you. He needs to go to a team that believes in him and will work around his talent. He simply won't fit in the Philbin/Sherman offensive model. No point in trying to put a square peg in to a circle.

Good news on Smith going far away but please God, for the love of all that's holy, no Tebow. Pretty please! No. No, seriously. really!

Tebow to Miami (for no more than 1 3rd round pick):

If it works: We win games and compete in the play offs. The Dolphins are no longer a punchline in the NFL.

If it doesn't work: Get the over all NO:1 pick in the draft and Ireland gets fired.

Tebow Tebow Tebow!

I'm not a Moore believer, but he's 10 times better than Tebow.

I think this is a good time for Ross to move this team to LA!!! Leave the Dolphins name in Miami and we get an expansion franchise later!!

Do NOT trade for Tim Tebow or I will march outside, burn all of my Dolphins gear, and NEVER cheer for this team ever again.

What is the probability the Browns draft Tannehill @#4?

If Sherman has sold Philbin & Ireland that he is the QB answer, then we must move up and get him.

If the Browns are only posturing and have their sights set on someone else...then we grab him @#8.

How real is it the Browns draft him at #4?

Draft Russell Wilson!!!

And... If the Dolphins trade for Tim Tebow... Im gonna burn all my Dolphin paraphernalia in effigy! I SWEAR!!!!

Can we start a Fan Revolt against management?? Have the fans ever run a front office out of town?? FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING!!! No buying tickets, No buying jerseys, NOTHING! Full out REVOLT!!! That'll get their attention because it seems like they care nothing about the fans!

From the beginning I thought this was the best scenario:

Draft a quarterback and start training camp with Matt Moore as the presumed starter.

bw, Barkely fans...
and I'm one...

If you think it's best to wait until next year to chase barkely, the latest rumor is that Cleveland is ALREADY counting the days till 2013 to draft said USC QB. Think we beat out Cleveland for his services? Willing to wager our future on it? Me neither.

Cousins will surprise whoever drafts him. And solid player, leader and fighter.

Weeden is probably the best pure passer in the draft. Besides his age, he'd make someone very satisifed for maybe 9 years.

*Skip Tannehill. His upside is Flacco. His downside is rock-bottom. Virtually no intangibles, and a LONG way from NFL ready.

Bring back Dan Marino

Philbin is our coach and he was an Offensive Cordinator, Shermin was a head coach and now our OC. they are impementing a new Offense, why not bring Tebow in who is a mobile qb if he can get training from people who will help him he can be a good qb. Matt Moore as our starter in 2012 and tebow as back up and learning would be better than Garrard. lets play it out and give our coaching staff a chance.

Draft a QB in the FIRST round, AND ALSO draft Russell Wilson in the later rounds.

As for Tebow. We could do worst, believe me guys.

Appreciate the props, Cosmodo at 1:11.

JS...I watched Tannehill beat RG3 straight up this past season.

He clearly was the better QB on the field that day, so I don't know where this "rock bottom" statement is coming from?

If you bring the wheels, I'll bring the Mr. Fusion & banana peels...

Once again... why has no one mentioned Geno Smith to the Dolphins next year, yet?

This team had better start think about obtaining a wide receiver also with the lose of Brandon Marshall.

What's becoming more evident is that Ireland and Philbin are on the same page: they are going to build from the draft. They are not going to overpay on any FAs. Period. That's the GB model too, isn't it? They were looking for a significant upgrade over Moore. Manning was it. Once he bailed on the Dolphins, they weren't going to go crazy on Flynn. They'll set their sight in the draft instead. I wouldn't be surprise if they try to jump to #3 if Sherman really believes in Tannehill.

I respect peyton manning a great deal, he's a top notch football guy. If he picks the broncos, so do I

"When will the excuses end? Wake up man. Only 10 million is guaranteed. He isn't going to make anywhere neaar 28 million. Phins could have had him for a reasonable price but, they are in frugal mode."

What will happen is Flynn will be good and the Dolphins will look like idiots again.

Or he will suck and Ireland will be vindicated on not signing him.

Until then everyone is just guessing.

Anyone want to guess how long it will take Ireland to crawl out of his rat hole to address the team and fans? Fire Ireland. It's a sad time in history to be a dolphan folks

Now Tebow To Phins Are You Kidding Me....

If they sign Tebow or Garrard I will sling-shot myself around the Sun in an effort to time-warp back to 1970, so I can encourage a 7 year old me to pick a different team.

Can you drop me off in the 80's so I can do the same? lol

Don't the Dolphins still have Jake Long? They should trade him immediately for Tebow, straight up, if the Broncos are actually willing to be suckers like the Bears. Go Ireland Go!!!!

JS in LA no offense because I like your posts but I for one am going to have to trust Sherman on this one. If the Dolphins draft him then Sherman fully endorsed him. And we should probably trust the guy who coached him than trust our inexperienced instincts.

He had a good game. So did FLynn.
So did Henne once or twice.
Even Feidler, Lemon and Feely beat teams a few times.
Look at Tannehill's record, his stats, then watch one of his average games (watch every throw).
Then if you feel comfortable calling him a 1st round talent, then so-be-it. I don't, and I've watched more film on him than I care to, and am befuddled at why he's so highly rated.
No one is stupid for thinking Tannehill is worth it. But believe it because you've really looked and like what you see, not what Kiper or other draftniks think.

Everyone has their opinions. I've said mine.

You know the people running your orgainization sucks when players who they bring in as a FA (Ryan Clark), tweets "NO ONE wants to join the Miami Dolphins" when ask why, there something about there managment he and a lot of other players in the league dont trust.

Prepare to be in the cellar for a while, Tannehill would of been a 3rd rounder now ppl are boosting him up to be selected 4th. WTF are you kidding me? So long Miami Dolphins, were the new Bengals of the 90's, Clippers of the 2000's, Bucs of the 80's this managment is terrible.

Don't worry about Tebow to the fins no one else wants to come here we should be ok

Riley Relief #1 Brock Osweiler#2 thats what i would do.

My predictions for the upcoming season;
1 Manning gets slamed to the ground before the 3rd game, out for the year/ retires hopefully not a gimp.
2 Tebow becomes preacher man in his home town of Gainsville, builds his own church.
3 Flynn turns out to to be a bust/later out like Flynn.
4 After another screwed up draft, Fans call for Irelands head, Ireland gone.
5 Too late for the Fins. The Ireland regime does the 2012 season in result 5-11.

JS...I get your point. I have to get over mine and move on..I don't want to be the angry guy that is all doom and gloom. This isn't my style, and is not much fun.

Anyway..We are going to disagre about Flynn..From the price Seattle paid to his value here..No worries

I agree with you about Manning. I was constant that I never thought he was coming here..The team on the other hand sure stopped time for him..I get it though, you have a chance at Peyton Manning you do what it takes to get him..Sadly, we hae nothing to offer.

Smith..??? Really?

Now I look at the rookies that are available.. I have said that any move to upgrade the position needs to be applauded..I can't sit here and really comment on any of the QB's after Luck, or Griffen. Because frankly. I know nothing about them..I would be making stuff up just to heear myself talk..(Osewieler is a guy I could give an opinion on)

It seems to me that Cleveland is a lock to draft Tannehill..I know many disagree. Do you think we will move up to 4 to gran a relatively unknown commodidty? This sounds crazy to me. Should we wait until round 2, and draft a 29 year old rookie??? I keep saying trade out of the first round all together...Why not? Go after a true blue chip guy next year whne we have the ammo for the fight..Because I don't know the ins and out of these propects this year doesn't mean they are garbage..It just seems to me none of them will be on the field this year anyway..May as well wait(I know the dreded Word wait) for a true prospect.

Best thing that could happen. Let Moore start, leave the FA QB's alone. And for all the people wanting to jump of bridges, shoot themselves, swallow kerosene, divorce their family, move out of state, burn their Dolphin gear, if Tebow lands here..For God's sake settle down..Geez, Manning has not even signed a contract, Tebow is under contract, No one has mentioned Tebow landing in Miami except for a few ( i will just leave it at fans) and Mando..Thanks Mando, just one more thing to stir the pot.

The people who post here regularly are total losers who even post here on Friday and Saturday night and first thing Saturday and Sunday morning.

Get down off of the ledge, losers. It's just entertainment.

The next successful offseason for this franchise will be the one Ireland is not involved in. Offer up Ireland & a 3rd rounder & try to snag a set of pylons out of the deal.

Supporting or having faith in Ireland because he was unable to land any of the mistakes he tried to get is assnine!

He tried to do the wrong thing by pursuiing the people he did. Fisher, Manning, Flynn, Smith etc. Be furious he pursued them, not that they luckily turned us down!

That's not a reason for hope. It's reason to fear.

The more I watch this offseason unfold, the more I think that Philbin has been set up as Sherman's patsy. All of this offseason's moves have been pointing towards drafting Tannehill.

I can only hope that Mike Holmgren has a serious jones for Tannehill and selects him at #4, thereby saving the future of the Dolphins franchise so that, with their top 3 pick in 2013, they can select either Barkley or Wilson.
