Manning decision to Denver still affects Dolphins

Several media outlets are reporting that Peyton Manning has picked the Denver Broncos as his new team and is in negotiations with the team to become the quarterback. That has created a domino effect that reaches the Dolphins.

Because Manning did not pick the San Francisco 49'ers, it seems to open up the possibility of a return to San Francisco for Alex Smith. And that would mean the player who visited the Dolphins on Sunday would be out of the running to continue his career in Miami.

This is not a 100 percent certainty as, frankly, Smith still is a free agent and has the right to negotiate with any team he wishes. But, as I reported this morning, Smith had told various NFL sources and had let the Dolphins know his first choice was to return to the Niners if Manning didn't pick that team.

We're not out of the wood yet, however.

As Manning is going to Denver, barring a snag in contract talks, that effectively ends Tim Tebow's time with that team. And, of course, that makes the Dolphins a possible landing spot for him.

Tebow, a University of Florida alumnus, has a huge following in South Florida. He did lead the Broncos to the playoffs and even a playoff victory over Pittsburgh. And he would definitely sell tickets for the Dolphins.

My guess is the football side of the organization would not be thrilled with the idea of Tebow because he is definitely not a classic West Coast offense quarterback. But ownership has recently been in charge of some football decision in Miami so I cannot discount it until, well, the Dolphins either say it isn't a possibility or show it isn't one.

Beyond that, where does this leave the Dolphins?

More and more it is looking like this team is going to be drafting a quarterback and rolling into training camp with Matt Moore as the presumed starter.

I suppose David Garrard is a veteran backup option that can be added to Moore plus a rookie draft pick as well.

As for a surprise bombshell ... we'll see.

I would grade this offseason a S (for Speechless).

LMAO Like you said, laugh to not cry!

Adrian,

I feel your pain. The first 3 years I was a fishwich they went to the Super Bowl...what a cruel joke to play on a kid.

The Delorean is starting to look more like a bus...got a lot of people asking for a ride.

We'll party like its 1969.

Wolfman, and that is why Tebow can't be on the roster, can he? Jax would make a good home for him. Apparently this new owner likes him more than Wayne weaver did.

Can we give Matt Moore one entire season to show what he can do? He is still our QB and he played well last year!

Ohio dolfan (I live in Columbus when
Not in miami) they r gettin old
But u have to understand the frustration. Everything opposite of
Whats promised has been done. I say, DONT EVER stop being a fan no matter what, but in historically horrible times like these do the one thing that does hurt them...don't spend a dime.
I go to games, both regular and preseason. Not anymore. Not until
Ireland is fired and Ross does what he promised.
Did u notice Peter king said Ireland is having the worst gm run in HISTORY????? Amazing.

CAN WE PULL UP THE BRINKS TRUCK TO DREW BREES HOUSE?

Fins4ever: 6-6 and u think he played well. I'll say this: he played the very best he could. Bottom line: he is not, nor will he ever be, a true nfl
Starter, and what's worse is even if he did get better, he CANNOT run a west coast offense. Not a knock against him, he just cnt do it

THE NECK

THE DENTEST

THE MACHANIC

THE ACORNS

THE SAVIOR

Lets see I have been a fan since 1978, I was 8yrs old. I have seen a lot, from Dan Marino, to losing the chance to sign Brees, which was the difference of a million or two. Now in 2012 this organization could not attrack flies (and thats hard to do) even when you Stink. As a fan for so many years its hard to follow so called leadership of this team. The Miami Dolphins make me just want to become a fan of the NFL, for I am to exhausted and embarresed to say I am a Miami Dolphin fan.

Shot down in flames.....

(This offseason, so far)

Trade up to get Blackmon and then go after Weeden.

This is working out just like I wanted it to. Here was my logic. Manning was never going to sign with the Dolphins. He was all about the money at Indy, which is why they couldn't afford any top defensive players for all those years. I could be wrong but I don't think he ever offered to restructure his contract like Marino did.Denver had the most cap space so it's no surprise where he was going to end up.
Next possible QB was Flynn. Two good wins in 2 years
with stats not as good as Matt Moore = 3 years at 26 million? I don't think so!
Then Smith comes to town only in case Manning was to sign with SF. I wouldn't want to sign any QB under those conditions.
I saw a lot of Tim Tebow last year living in SLC. I don't get what all the negative talk is coming from.I watched him win games over and over again that Denver had no business winning.I had to keep reminding myself that he is a rookie. He was the only player I saw last year that actually willed himself to win. The broadcasters seemed against him from the start. The Denver office was apparently against him, and still is from some of the articles I've read. I think most of the negative crap I read is because he mentions Jesus in all of his interviews.I'm not into organized religion myself, but I wouldn't like it if people judged me because I wasn't. Bottom line is this kid is a born winner. That is very rare. He can learn the west coast given half a chance. I don't care if he wants to pray to the "BIG OHM IN THE SKY" as long as he gives the effort I saw him play with against a stacked deck last year. Go Tim

It is true....Bronco fans are completely flipped out. Only a smattering of support here at the moment for Manning.

Kinda funny, when you scroll down the page at pft, almost every story regarding a free agent signing seems to be accompanied by a picture of that player making a play against the Dolphins.

Inimounts

I completely understand, and am full of negative feelings toward this off-season and the past decade really.

But after about the 15th post of "I'm taking my things and going home" it got kind of old.

I'm cool with venting if it has some meat to it and doesn't sound like a 5 year old didn't get invited to the birthday party.

I like your posts, you have good stuff to offer.

The Dolphins:

did not Suck for Luck
did not Gag or Griffin

but they retched for Riley Reiff.

Ireland email to Ross "Mr. Ross, why don't we helicopter in Tebow and Donovan McNabb for a tryout? It will only cost about $50,000 worth of fuel if we do it non-stop roundtrip"

i wanted mr rg3 @ the outset of this lsd trip(least i think i did cause my head is spinning from this qb carousel & i'm so dizzy its effecting my memory).he turned out to be very costly for a hc that wants to build thru the draft though. matt flynn? yawn...ho hum...etc. now, draft either osweiler, tannehill,or cousins with the goal of supplanting matt moore in mid to late 2012 or by 2013.stay the course & build the packer way.thru the draft...oh by the way F@CK you peter king.

It's really a sad time when Lions fans have more to cheer for than Dolphins fans.

At least at 1-15, hope was on the horizon in terms of new leadership. Right now, there is no end in sight to this dysfuntion.

Be afraid phins fans, be very afraid. This could get much worse before it gets better.

If Tebow ends up in Miami it would conclussively prove one thing:

"TONY SPARANO WASNT PROBLEM #1 IN MIAMI"

It would say this fo doesnt centered its primary focus of providing its hc with the pieces that directly fits his system. It would prove this fo isnt beyond providing its hc with square pegs to force into round holes.

I like that option. Moore as the starter, Garrard (backup) competing, and drafting a QB at 8. That's a solid plan so I'm sure the ORGANIZATION won't do it.

It's funny that Denver is upset about signing Manning.

If Manning flops, then Elway is going to feel like Ireland.

Read Peter King's column if you haven't already. His description of the past decade and, especially, the Ireland/Parcells mess shows a lot of what has gone wrong.

The Dolphins will stink as long as Steve Ross owns the team.

How exactly are the Fins up against the salary cap when the 2011 payroll is $88 mil (includes Marshall) and the cap for 2012 is 120M? (The second number against the player is the 20111 cap number, first is salary -- formatting messed up on the paste)

He has been franchised, he can't go anywhere. Whether he is happy or not makes no difference, all he can do is refuse to play....he can't play for another team this season.

thats funny jacksparrow. they should watch the opposite episode of seinfeld and use it as corporate mantra.ireland must get tannehill, osweiler,or cousins.if he doesn't i will personally take bob kuechenberg out for drinks and then drop him at jeffys office(i wonder if kuech still has that metal rod in the left arm...mess jeff up pretty good with that.

Dont rule out the possiblity that Jax gets Tebow and then have to do something with Gabbert. What is better than a QB that a team got rid of for someone better? A QB who was replaced by a QB who was replaced.

Sounds like a great plan to me.

The players are fungible. What determines if a team is good is the coaching. Philbin might be good. We don't know yet. Season hasn't started yet.

I don't see what's so bad here. Manning is a huge unknown, Flynn no big deal. They were shopping Marshall early on which says Philbin didn't want him, so Marshall screws up again and they dump him while they can.

So far, so good.

Best scenario:

Crazy owner from the Jags gets Tebow back and since he signed Henne he'll trade Blaine Gabbart and we pick him up for a 2 or a 3.

The kid's not that good but then again... he was picked in the first round by the Jags and all they have if MJD but no receivers. We see how he does and if not we go get the USC kid next year. That must be Ireland
s master plan

SeaFinFan,

I'm only guessing, but perhaps the cap amounts in your post are only for active players on the roster. Sometimes when a player is cut/traded before their contract expires then the remaining portion sometimes counts against the cap.

I'm sure you probably know more than I do about cap and perhaps another fan will explain it better than my comment above.

If the salary for the team is only $70,651,250 and the Dolphins spent to the cap of about $120,000,000 then that would explain why the Dolphins are both cheap and mismanaged.

My only complaint, if they were not high enough on Flynn to make him a decent offer, they should not have bothered to bring him in. We didn't lose out on Flynn, we low balled him away.

the difference between the Fish and Patriots regards organization and football acumen is startling

Hear media reports we'll either leapfrog Browns for Tannehill or hope he falls to #8.

Tannehill scares me. He gives the Chad Henne feel as far as college production. Mind I didnt see much of Tannehill in college, but did see lots of Henne. Tannehill wasnt billed as one of the ultimate Mr. Excitements in college, nor was he Mr overall bum.

He's sort of a Mr. twixt and in between. My grade on him would be above average to bottom of the barrel great. Its so difficult to equate how that translates in the nfl. Kind of sounds like at best very good but slightly never good enough when facing better nfl qb's.

Its still early so all we can do is wait and see what happens.

We suck

really????? matt moore as our projected starter is a SOLID PLAN???!
i will say this one last time: no one doubts that matt moore hit his ceiling last year. he cannot play better. and he went 6-6. true story. he cannot be our starter, he is a viable backup at best.
i just read an article that we will try for tebow, i cant stand him (go canes) but you guys are all twisted. the one thing we should all care about is miami getting players that make them better. and since we never draft anyone that ends up actually playing for us after the third round, then getting tebow would be 100 percent positive right? even as competition for moore, what is the harm? u dont like him? neither do i! but he is a playoff qb, won his division, and he wins. its like vince young. can anyone tell u why he was a successful nfl qb? because he was, his record speaks for that. its because, like tebow, he is a winner. it makes everyone better around them, and makes up for so so numbers.
if you want to go by numbers, then you would be paying kyle orton or fitzpatrick 12 mill for one year wonders. putting up 4000 yards plus and u can still go 4-12. i want winners. hope we get tebow.
sea fin fan does marshall count against the cap? or is this for last year. because i know hilliard wont he was traded to minnesota.

Boy Horse face Elway is even more socially clueless than most of you here.

The same people who think the Dolphins are still relevant or have any respect in the NFL probably think Obama is a good president.

Unfortunately, there are allot of you idiots out there!

I like Tim Tebow as a te. Think Gronkowski with brains.

This is working out just like I wanted it to. Here was my logic. Manning was never going to sign with the Dolphins. He was all about the money at Indy, which is why they couldn't afford any top defensive players for all those years. Everyone saying "I'm done as fan" over and over is stupid. Also, nobody cares. Buh bye.

"Contrary to previous reports, SI.com's Peter King is told free agent Alex Smith is "very serious" about the Dolphins if they're serious about him."

OMG....Sounds like Ireland isn't finished getting played just yet. Watch Smith's agent drive the price up so he can sign with the Niners for more money.

And there were ACTUALLY people worried about Carl Peterson taking over in Miami...Ha!!! I'd take Peterson in a heartbeat right now.

Ross responds to Ireland's email: "Mr. Ross, why don't we helicopter in Tebow and Donovan McNabb for a tryout? It will only cost about $50,000 worth of fuel if we do it non-stop roundtrip".
Ross answer to Ireland's email "It sounds reasonable, could we also pick up JLo?"

Seafinfan,

I believe your chart only show guaranteed money. The official amount rises when players hit thier incentives and rostor bonuses. Or, the not "guaranteed money".

I just glued a little picture of a kittycat to my penis.

NO!!!!
we cannot give up picks to get tannehill. do it to get blackmon (megatron part 2) not tannehill. he will not be a good nfl qb, and cleveland will be picking him at 4 (remember when they said hed be lucky to go in the first round? remember when they said cam newton was a stretch at us at 12th? this is what happens with qbs as the draft gets closer, it's why drafting qbs early is such a mistake)
let me make this clear: tannehill most likely will not be a good nfl qb, he will definitely be too expensive for what hes worth. cousins, will DEFINITELY not be an nfl qb, he is horrible! inconsistent at the college level, pat white at the nfl level. wheeden could be good, but at a later draft pick since he has at BEST 7 years left. russel wilson is the steal of the draft. hes almost 6 foot, and thats the knock on him, but thats the only one. he can do it all, is a four year GREAT starter, and has the most potential. all osweiler can do is make a team fire their head coach due to losses, just another cousins. id rather have jacory harris lol.

inimounts,

Im sure you see Matt Moore as not being a solid plan. But compared to what left out there now on the fa market. Matt Moore is the most solid qb plan we have left. Look at it like that!

not funny...........at all

yesterday's gone, we dont have players that hit incentives lol.....i wish.
did anyone else see this yahoo sports article today? i am now in a good mood as a dolphins fan, and you should be too!.....the league, the media, are FINALLY taking notice of how inept and tragic ireland, his ego, and his decisions have been to the miami dolphins. please check it:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/miami-viced-dolphins-become-public-disgrace-155151364.html

I would take Matt Moore over Alex Smith right now!

Captain Obvious, I can think of worse teams to be than Detroit. How many #1 picks in the Draft did they have (4-5)? Sounds good to me. That's our #1 QB, #1 WR, #1 d-lineman and #1 LB or Safety or whatever other need we have. Gotta be easier for the GM if they get the 1st pick in the Draft every year.

Maybe that's what needs to happen to get talent on the team.

Yesterday's Gone--

It was wonderful to awaken yesterday morning and find you in the kitchen, wearing nothing but a t-shirt, preparing bacon and eggs for me before you blew me (a kiss) as I left for the office. You're the best, honey!

The Patriots now signed Anthony Gonzalez, Donte Stallworth, & Robert Gallery but not Branch or the law firm. Strange f#cking team.

Folks, I am NOT a fan of Ireland or Ross..in Ross's case, hanging Sparano out to dry makes him a bad human being.
BUT...
This is about Elway, pure and simple. The 49'ers would be a LOCK in their division..and with Manning, could conceivably go to the Super Bowl this upcoming year.A no brainer except...ELWAY'S relationship with BOTH Mannings. Remember, both Elway and Eli refused to play for the team that was to draft them.
This is just circumstance..bad, to be sure, but not the fault of the FO.

On the other hand, the Matt Flynn thing?

Then AGAIN, you HAVE to know Philbin must not have been 100% behind Flynn, or Ross would have beaten the Seahawks offer.

yesterday's gone, he went 6-6, at the best he could do. forget about numbers, you have to when going after qbs like vince young and tim tebow.

and you kind of made my point.....i for one am a canes fan, and can never stand tim tebow. but looking at our roster LOGICALLY, with one qb, and no real options in the draft.......if not tebow, then who?

if we dont get tebow, like so many of you want, then we have nothing and moore is our definite starter, and if he sucks (again) or gets hurt, both very possible if not probable, then we have at best a charlie batch and at worst a jp losman to take us to the first pick of the 2013 draft.....now, if we get a tim tebow or a vince young, then we have at worst, competition for matt moore from a winner who can also run the ball and do wildcat if needed, or a starting qb that already has experience not only going to the playoffs, but doing so by inheriting a team with a losing record and no hope and winning the division and a playoff game.....

with those being the facts, then my question is this: why NOT try to get tebow?

inimounts,

some incentives are very easy to hit. Like roster bonuses. Just still be on the team when the new nfl season arrives.

Then there are playing time bonuses. You only have to start an agreed upon percentage of games during the season. A player with injury history. A team may write into his contract he must start at least 90% of season games to get this bonus.

So you see, some bonus and incentive money is fairly easy to hit. Its not all predicated on leading the league in certain categories, becoming a pro bowler, or being a all pro.

Dont rule out the possiblity that Jax gets Tebow and then have to do something with Gabbert. What is better than a QB that a team got rid of for someone better? A QB who was replaced by a QB who was replaced.
Sounds like a great plan to me.

There's a lot of talk around here in Bronco land about a direct swap of Tebow and Gabert as Gabert is a nicer fit to sit behind Manning and ultimately be their "QB of the future."

Well, who really cares what you think. Seriously. WHO?

yesterday's gone,
lol you dont need to tell me about easy to hit incentives or bonuses....i was being somewhat ludicrous...because as a dolfan, nobody needs to remind u of how little it takes to get a bonus or incentive: one snap from chad pennington at the cost of a quarter mill taught me for life :(

DC,

With that amount of #1's, imagine the amount of lineman we could get!!!

:) :)
