Manning: 'I'm throwing it pretty well'

Peyton Manning is no longer an Indianapolis Colts quarterback. At an emotional press conference moments ago, Manning said both he and owner Jim Irsay have talked about the circumstances and they have decided it is "necessary we take this next step."

The next step for Manning is toward another team. Manning did not wish to speak about any possibility of where he'll wind up, instead using today exclusively to say his farewells. "I haven't thought yet about where I'll play," Manning said, "But I have thought about where I've been."

Manning later reiterated that "I really don't know, I probably need to ask someone what these next few steps are," when he was asked how he next goes about seeking a new team.

The most newsy nugget to emerge from the emotonal 13-minute press conference was Manning discussing the progress of his throwing. Manning missed the entire 2011 season following at least three and possibly four procedures to his neck meant to help nerves that serve his right throwing arm regenerate after they stopped firing.

Manning was unable to play because the nerve damage stole strength from his arm and prevented him from throwing at his usual capability. That capability, Manning said, has improved lately.

'I'm throwing it pretty well," he said. "I've still got some work to do, I've got some progress to make. But I've come a long way. And I've really worked hard. I can't tell you the hours I've put in to working hard. I really enjoy being back out there. I've had a chance to throw with some of my old teammates -- guys like Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Austin [Collie], [Brandon] Stokley, [Jeff] Saturday's snapped to me a couple of times. That's been the most fun part ... being back out there on the field.

"You're in the training room all Fall, you're sort of off-limits to the field so to be cleared to be kind of be back out there and throw, I sure have enjoyed that. I'm doing better. I continue to work hard and hopefully keep making some progress."

Manning stopped short of saying he's 100 percent.

"I'm feeling closer and closer," he said. "I have to remind myself that it is March. I have a hard time doing that at times. But it sure feels comfortable. It feels like home being out there."

Manning mentioned that Irsay said he would always be welcome around the Colts. The Dolphins play the Colts this coming season. If he signs with the Dolphins, perhaps Manning can visit with the Colts the week before the game when they're drawing up their defensive game plan.

Good night everyone. Till next time

I just read about these Papuans from New Guinea, they play Soccer and have dikks that reach to their chin and encased in wood. Nobody will score a Goal on them as they have 3 arms.

This is an outstanding post.

LOL, baby steps bro. All we're looking for is to make the Playoffs (like with Pennington). Anything past that is gravy.

New coaches, playbooks, bad oline, holes on d & top it off, potentially a Qb who isn't completely healthy. Do I need to envoke the Jim Mora Playoff speech?

I hear ya, i do. But, unless this team gets lucky & qb's fall to em, they're inept. Don't you wanna be successful long term because we earned it with routinely smart football decisions? Like Pitt, Baltimore, Philly.

Waiting for Qb's to fall out of the sky is dumb luck.
When Manning goes, where will we be? The same place we have been. I'm tired of other teams left overs. I want my team to go out & grab their own. Not ride someones past in the hopes it brings us a future.

Predictably, it never does.

just say No to Poe....yes, he's a combine freak, but there is a huge disparity between what he showed at the combine and what he's showed in games. You'd think a "freak" like that would rack up more than 5 sacks in his college career.

I they're just looking for a guy with some upside and a guy who is a great tackler and run stuffer, then go for it....but a sacker of QBs Poe is not.

Fellas Mark, Dusty etc),
Eli is an amazing QB. His stock has just gone up from winning his second title. Before that game, was anyone willing to call him a superstar?
What I'm saying is using Eli as an example that you don' need a Nike/Gatorade/whatever selling start personality to win a title. Or two.
My point was someone like Eli wasn't a freak or must-watch TV, or did weird Tebow/Vick/Newton things. He just played steady, smart and lead his team well. That kind of QB wins just as well if not better than the super-hyped ones (peyton included). So although I'd love Grifin/Luck, we can win with Cousins.
Why pass him up?

Home can now CONFIRM THAT WR REGGIE WAYNE WILL JOIN
The Dolphins new QB 11-time Pro Bowl quarterback is also the Colts' all-time leading passer statistically, throwing for 54,828 yards and 399 touchdowns and is a sure-fire candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

WR Reggie Wayne signing w MVP QB Peyton Manning to Miami in 2012

U heard it here first from Home On The Herald!

JS, for what it's worth, when Eli said he considered himself elite before last season, I didn't even blink. I agreed and you will find me saying as much if you looked at the comments section of Armandos blog.

And he is elite. That pass to Manningham was elite. It wasn't a great catch, but it was a superlative pass.

by the way - guys who want to wait until next year to draft our future QB...
Here's the current op 4 QBs in next year's draft:

1. Barkley (USC)
2. L. Jones (OU)
3. Tyler Wilson (Ark)
4. Geno Smith (WVU)

Barkley is out of range unless we nose dive (Peyton and Moore are both hurt?).
Anyone else light your fire?

Home what about Jeff Saturday?

Waiting for Qb's to fall out of the sky is dumb luck.

Home, how did you get this breaking Miami Dolphin info first?
Posted by: joedafan | March 07, 2012 at 03:07 PM

loser home talking to himself again

LOL, I hear you too. I'm with you. I've been screaming for long-term stability at QB since the Saban era. I wanted Brees (not Culpepper). I wanted a 1st-rd QB (ANY 1st-rd QB) every year since.

I'm no longer optimistic this team can or will make that move. And if they do I'm not optimistic they'll know the right guy to take a chance on.

Therefore, I'm settling. I know, this has been tried. And it's failed before. And I shouldn't settle. But I am. I'm sorry for it, I'm a weak person. That's what eternal mediocrity does to a fan. I'm like a junkie, and I'm not thinking clearly. I'm just looking for my next fix. Sure, it can be stepped-on dirt, but I'll take it (that's how hard up I am). Not comparing Manning to bad drugs, just comparing my need for somebody, ANYBODY to take over at QB to being in need of a fix.

You might be right, this could be fools gold. If so, I'll move on to the next. But right now, this is the best I believe I can get. SO, I'm going to take it.

Mark,
I dig you man, but you're driving me nuts. I don't care whether Eli is considered elite by smart people, I was trying to make a comparison to someone who wasn't hyped as a media star, especially out of college. He was a name to live up to, but wasn't considered astounding. Just plain solid. And he is that.
Aaron Rogers wasn't considered astounding either until he got a few years, and playoff wins under his belt. He wasn't a star until he made himself one.
So Cousins isn't a star. Yet. Nor was Dalton.
But I think he could prove to be in the same mold.
THAT's my point.
That's all.
I could care less about Eli's legend unless he's on my team. Just an example, that's all.

joedafan, Home cannot confirm Jeff Saturday yet, maybe later today or tomorrow will have the news on Indy's center

Home can confirm Peyton & Reggie :)

Not sure what anyone particularly sees in Cousins. I must be missing something. I mean, I don't see anything terrible there....but nothing that would lead me to believe he's better than anyone the Phins have had since Marino. He pretty much looks like an average dink and dunk QB to me. His arms strength is just so-so...accuracy is so-so...mobility is decent enough and he does have some intangibles but.......

Personally, I don't think he'll go as high as a lot of people have him going.

If he's still there in the 4th, I'd be OK with Miami taking a flyer on him....otherwise, PASS.

Js, I agree with Mark, Eli is an elite QB no question about it, how many more superbowls does he have to win before you think he is.

The draft I would like to see if the phins get manning.
1. Trade back and get an extra 2 and 4th round pick. Draft the best pass rusher available(Hopefully Nick Perry)
2. Draft best right tackle available.
2b.Draft best corner available.
3. Draft young qb to groom(Cousins)
4. Draft fastest receiver on board(Streeter)
4b.Draft another pressure player
5. Best available player
6. Best available player
7. Best available player

Also you have to pick up a pass catching te in free agency. Shiancoe from Minnesota would be nice.

Home, what amazes me is how you always get the news first, before the media or all the sportswriters.
I will check back tomorrow, buddy.

Yes, loser home again.

Craig M.
Don't you think we go after offensive tackle in first round, when we sign Manning. We might sign Saturday to play center and move Pouncey to guard. We would have one of the best offensive line in the league. Add a pass rusher in second round. Sign Wayne, we would have an awesome offense.

I don't know. People that were at the Combine and watched Kirk Cousins said he threw a tight spiral with good velocity. When I watched him in his College videos, he looked like sh-t. Of course, almost impossible to determine quality in a QB from videos

Home Hits Again!

Wayne is OPEN to signing with the Dolphins, and views a receiver tandem that features him and Brandon Marshall lining up on opposite sides, and Manning throwing them the ball as something that would shake up the landscape of the AFC East, if not the NFL.

“You don’t think [Peyton Manning] wants to prove people wrong,” Wayne told WQAM. “You don’t think he wants to go out there and show everyone he’s back, and what he can do. This dude is going to be ready. Trust me, he’s going to be more than ready. And he’s not going to have a problem adjusting to nobodies scheme, and nobodies roster. He’s going to fit in just like he’s been there.”

Wayne, a former Hurricanes standout who is a South Florida resident in the offseason, is optimistic he can do the same thing if the Dolphins make an offer, putting the Manning’s old band back together in South Florida

“My phone is working. It’s definitely working. I got all my bars. Whenever that phone rings, trust me, I’ll answer,” Wayne said about his desire to sign with the Dolphins.

“I can see it, and I’m definitely not opposed to it,” Wayne said about teaming up with Manning in Miami. “He’s a great worker. I consider myself a great worker, and when you put great workers together good things happen. Me being in his trail to Miami, I would definitely love it! I’m totally available. My phone is working…I’m ready for anything that comes! I definitely see that in the mix.

Irsay decided it was necessary for both of them to take the next step ages ago!

Awesome Home!

How come Armando does not have any of this information you have Home?

Do you work for the Miami Herald?
If not you should be lead reporter.

Oscar,
You are correct about Cousins. His arm strength has never been a question. Everyone knows he can make all of the throws. He reminds me of Bob Griese.

Wolfman,
Since I'm higher on Cousins than most, I'll attempt to speak for them.

First of all the arm strength/acuracy issues aren't. He threw well at the combine, and made all the NFL throws just fine.

Second, I find him intelligent, precise, and sure of himself. In interviews he is straightforward, and quick to answer. He comes acorss as a leader, and if sources are correct a personality that players like to play for. In other words they trust him to lead. Very much along the lines of Tebow's magnetism, without the faith stuff, or as pronounced. He's very competitive and a proven winner.

Physically, he's the usual size, weight for a NFL QB. Not a runner, but mobile enough.

The offense he ran at MSU ws designed as a playmaker run or YAC offense, so he wasn't needed to chuck ridiculous passes all over the field. But when he needed to, he made them.

Is he the real deal? Who knows? I like him though. Yes, I like Griffin and Luck more, but I like Cousins as a consolation prize. And I don't see anyone next year, besides Barkley that I like better.

You might be right, this could be fools gold. If so, I'll move on to the next. But right now, this is the best I believe I can get. SO, I'm going to take it.

Man, you do what you gotta do. As a lifelong fan of the last 30 years, I certainly know where you're coming from.

To me, Manning is just another exucse & way out for this pathetic franchise to avoid doing what they have to do. Stop the 1-2 year fixes & ACQUIRE YOUR OWN DAMN FRANCHISE QB.

They are starting to bring the Cowboys into the Manning discussion. I said it before, if Jerry Jones could get Manning, he'd part ways with Romo in a heartbeat. I would not, under any circumstances, think Jerry Jones wouldn't make a play for Manning. He's been too quiet during the whole thing.

Loser home strikes again

Oscar C,
good to know there's another Cousins man in this forum. Starting to feel like I was the only one.

Home is the best!

Prof Lou,
Also shout out to you as well as oscar. Missed your post. Population of 3 on Cousins Island?

Awesome the Dolphins getting All these best players Manning, Saturday and Wayne that love playing together w Brandon Marshall, Reggie Bush,Jake Long, Simply The Bess, Fasano,Clay and Gates on offense

Now we can get DT & DE & CB in the draft

Go Phins!

I respect your opinion on that LOL. For all our sake, I hope I'm right though. However, I do want a QB to develop behind Manning (don't want to be in this position in 3 years).

Home, come work with me!

Cousins would be a perfect fit to sit behind manning

We got Peyton and Matt Moore

No Need to worry about another journeyman QB that will never play for 3 more years

Draft DT, DE & CB

Home is the best!

here's a hint folks, anyone who responds to home, is home. they aren't real. What an insignificant soul.

No more QB's from the Big 10, too many Henne memories.

Tyler Bray qb Tennessee next year

Im a dik

don't you love how home spams the same thing over n over & no one responds?

Wanna know why? Check out the 1st half of my name!

Considering this is home talking about himself, I concur.

Wait a sec, Proff, Griese had no arm at all. Just deadly accurate.

I blow

Home is the best!
Posted by: FYI |

oscar,
I'm sorry. I was referring to the accuracy. I didn't clarify that in my post. He WAS the surgeon.

Please believe me, I'm desperate and very lonely.

You're gosh darned right the greatest QB of all time (by a very, very wide margin) is throwing the ball pretty well. That's an understatement.

If the Dolphins sign Manning do they still go pass rusher at #8 or are they taking Tannehill to groom behind him. Hopefully, the still go pass rusher. Cousins learning behind Manning would be a better situation.

Have you seen my dildo. Wait here it is in my Greek butt again

I'm not a Cousin's man or anybody elses man for that matter. Who really knows about QB's transitioning into the NFL? Maybe Cincinnati, with Dalton, but that might have been lucky.

"Nobody knows what is going to happen" -Jason LaConforna

There is no way Irsay was paying Manning that $28 million bonus. It wasn't a matter of what was going to happen as much as it was when it was going to happen.

They go pass rusher De or DT to collapse the pocket

Home like DT Poe better now than DE Coples
DT Poe has more heart on every down and is an absolute force
