« Report: Peyton Manning to be released (warm up the helicopter!) | Main | Manning: 'I'm throwing it pretty well' »

Manning signing could pay for itself from a business standpoint

Say whatever you wish about Dolphins owner Stephen Ross but someone doesn't become a billionaire without some financial acumen. And in authoring the Dolphins upcoming chase of Peyton Manning, it is clear Ross's financial expertise is at work.

Simply, the addition of Manning would be a boon for the Dolphins coffers. There is no doubt about that.

I would estimate the Dolphins could easily gain 10,000 season ticket customers if they land Manning. I'm basing this on the fact that lesser offseason moves in Miami history have seen a significant spike in season tickets sales and the addition of Manning would make those moves pale by comparison.

For example, sales jumped by approximately 7,000 season tickets in 1996 when Jimmy Johnson replaced Don Shula. Sales increased by almost 8,000 season tickets in 2006 when the Dolphins traded for Daunte Culpepper.

The mountainous addition of Peyton Manning would make either of those other moves seem like a speed bump.

So if you accept that Miami's season ticket sales, lagging the past couple of years, could jump dramatically with a Manning signing all you have to do is some basic math to see where the boon would come.

With the Dolphins average season ticket price at $78.50, an increase of 10,000 tickets sold would add $7.85 million to Miami's season ticket take. Add to that approximately $2 million coming in for extra parking and assuming each customer spends, say, $30 on concessions during each game -- a conservative estimate -- you're adding another $3 million to the gross.

So on tickets, parking and concession Manning could represent perhaps $12-$13 million to Miami's bottom line. That doesn't count merchandise sales, plus any potential playoff game sales.

Now, I'm not saying the Dolphins are going to chase Manning because they want to fill their stadium. Yes, they want to do that, but I am sold on the idea the team wants to win as much as sell tickets. Still, the selling tickets and making more money part would be a welcome outgrowth of such a signing.

And, really, I don't see how any other player addition outside of Robert Griffin III would light up the turnstiles like Manning would. Matt Flynn would not. Ryan Tannehill would not. The Dolphins could add Mario Williams and that wouldn't register like Manning would.

That fact, by the way, will not escape Manning's representation. I continue to stress to you that the much anticipated low-guarantee, incentive laden deal everyone is expecting to land Manning could easily fly out the window if some team gets desperate enough to bid high on Manning. And when you have multiple teams interested, there is definitely a chance of that happening.

But even by conservative estimates, Manning will get $8-$10 million in guaranteed money this year with perhaps another $20 million deferred to 2013 or set up as some sort of option bonus.

Under that reasonable scenario, Manning would more than pay for himself the first year. And that is good business.

YG, the problem starts with not drafting a QB in the first round since Marino. We tried the Henne route where he sat behind Pennignton and was thought of as the franchise QB of the future, it just didnt work. Again if we get Manning, unfornetley we should move down in the draft again and select Reiff, some DL stud in the first and in the second select a QB who sits behind Moore and Manning.

look at our opponents outside the division, NOT ONE IS A PLAYOFF TEAM and we got Manning, Marshall & Bush !

Dolphins undefeated Home in 2012 !

Go Phins!

tony dungy is so biased he would draft RG3 over Payton Manning.Sad he only coached Manning to one Super Bowl.Mediocre coach.

Guys, I'm worried about the Cardinals (as our top competition for Manning). Jets is a long-shot IMO. Skins are a no-brainer NO for multiple reasons (bad fit, they're nowhere CLOSE to being relevant as the 2 main ones). That leaves us and Arizona as the last 2 standing (of the Final Four). They just have a lot going for them (easier division, better short-term history, Larry Fitzgerald, etc.). That's the team I'm most worried about.

Armando, of course the Dolphins are going to chase Manning because they want to fill their stadium. Ross is bleeding badly. Its all about the buck.

Miami in the Playoffs and Win the AFC East

Indy rebuilding, prob a losing record

So will We also get Reggie Wayne?

Home & your aliases, is there any way you can make yourself appear any more pathetic than you currently do?

WOW! Such insight! How long did it take you to come up with that one?

DC Dolfan, Its been reported that Manning and is wife loves Miami, also Manning has he attitude to be the best you have to beat the best, so he'll be motivated to stick it up brady rear end twice a year and shut Ryan lard a** up

Personally, Love everything about Manning.....signing him would be grave mistake. This team has MANY holes. If we sign him, we will put ourself in financial straight-jacket for several years. We will be unable to sign any other significant FA's. In 2 to 3 years, we will be back in the same place....no QB for the future and a thinnly talented team. Put our dollar in other places that are equally in need. Best case senerio, 2years of production w. Manning....!0-15Mil/yr. Too expensive.

Alright Miami!

Am gonna write "M2M" in the sky using Aluminum Oxides and Bariums Salts in my best chemtrail spray!

DC, heard something re Arizona this morning. They are only 3 mill under the cap. Sure they can create 14 mill by releasing Levi brown but not sure the qb wants his left tackle released.

Also heard Houston may be a surprise entrant and that would he horrible news. Can't compete with them.

The NFL’s wealthiest owner may be willing to give a sizable chunk of his wealth to Peyton Manning.

The Seattle Seahawks are planning to “come out checkbook blazing” for Manning, a source tells Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com, who is also reporting that the Jets will check Manning out.

Seahawks owner Paul Allen has a net worth estimated at $13.5 billion, making him about $10 billion richer than the second-wealthiest NFL owner, Stephen Ross of the Dolphins. So from Allen’s perspective, money will not be an issue.

DC Dolfan,

Cards just spent $50 million on Kolb. Im not sure thier cap situation will allow them comfort of a Manning. Even if they bring in Manning and cut Kolb. Cap reverberations could still have an unwanted lingering effect.

Don't ask home for anything..you are opening a can of which you just won't want to see the contents. And then you will hear every conspiracy theory available today..and then he will tell you that there is some sort of arsenic in you pillow places there by the government... Don't don't man!

Doggone it.I had forgotten it was a #19 jersey I bought at discount after ginn went to SF. Perhaps I can alter it and make the 9 and 8.

Wonder if Ireland will ask Manning if his mom is a crack ho'?

Home says,

"Manning and his wife own a condo on South Beach and a source said they'd love to relocate to South Florida if the fit is right. A second source confirmed Manning's interest in the Dolphins.

Playing for the Dolphins would allow Manning to remain in the AFC, and the Colts are on Miami's schedule next season, which is an added bonus."

Go Phins!

I heard Denver might be entering this derby...that would

Don't Chemtrail Me, Bro!

Clyde doesnt matter who the richest nfl owner is. They're all super rich. However, it the nfl's salary cap that places them all on a level playing field.

No matter who the richest owner is, they're all underneath the same nfl "spending cap".

Home, you're dumb.

Dan Marino says, "Miami NEEDS to sign QB Peyton Manning!"

The Herald Blog says, "Home, you're stupid!"

Be bad because Elway is organized, a Peyton friend, and has a young stud QB that would be a great student to manning in tebow...seems more attractive than Miami unfortunately

Home is better source of Dolphin info than Mando

Mando has no Dolphin Heart, just wants his paycheck and mocks our team

Home is Miami Dolphin Superfan & Profit "NostraHomeUs"

Go Dolphins!

It is interesting to read so many conclusions based on ONE MAJOR ASSUMPTION: Manning can play football.

Yes, heard about Houston. That might not be a bad thing (for us YG, if Ireland wants RG3). Think about this scenario, Houston is interested. They can't (won't) keep Shaub. So they trade him to Washington (he played under Kyle Shanahan so both would probably be happy with that). That's one team out of the RG3 hunt (who's ahead of us in the Draft). That only leaves Cleveland left.

As far as Seattle, I'm not worried. I've heard all the teams will eventually be willing to give Peyton roughly the same amount. Don't think there's one team that will knock everyone else's socks off. Also, Ross isn't poor by any stretch of the imagination. And he's the driver of this Peyton thing, so don't see him being outbid by enough to make Peyton go somewhere else based on it.

The Sentinel blog says, "Home, get a life!"

Man, Home is getting record hits today.

Quite possibly south Florida's most well known Miami Dolphin blogger & predictor of Miami Dolphin football.

Also, I hear Seattle wants Flynn. I'm happy to let them have him.

Prophet "NostraHomeUs" thanks again for letting us know bout Manning signing with the Miami Dolphins a few months go.

I feel Miami clearly has the inside track to Peyton Manning. Here are a list of the few:

1. Peyton has a condo here.
2. He's from the south. Florida's close to New Orleans.
3. We have a top 10 nfl wr(Marshall)
4. We have a run game
5. He makes Bush even more of a threat, both running and catching the ball.

Also, whom better to make Charles Clay look like the 2nd coming of "Dallas Clark" than Peyton Manning. Whom better to come in and take advantage of Clyde Gates scorching deep speed.

Great article. Its all about the money.

Good job Home, i am so excited about Peyton Manning to Miami!

Florida close to New Orleans lOL.

Geez that is reaching. I hear he has a condo in Florida, for him buying a condo is like buying a shirt, or renting an exectutive suite.

In the end he will go to the team he likes most, I don't think homes or state taxes factor into the equation.

Awwww home, nice try, idiot. You're becoming more n more desperate for attention today. Look at all the posts from yourself to yourself.

Your new name: Home, the attn Wh*re! LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO

I don't think his wife factors into the equation. Without Peyton his wife would be living 10 standards below her current one. Peyton has a few years to win another trophy, he will decide which of his options gives him the best shot and go there, dome or no dome, snow or no snow, taxes shmaxes.

On film, I mean Home, keep it up, idiot.

I'm more than happy to point out to everyone all of your aliases. Knowledge is power. The more names people know of yours, the more they'll be ignored.

Please, continue!

Peyton Manning giving speech then Ross and Manning in Miami :)

DC Dolfan,

I dont think our greatest obstacle to getting RG3 is Ireland, nor Peyton Manning. Its Ross himself. St Louis media has reported Ross wont do business with Rams because he's sore about losing Jeff Fisher to them.

Remember its well documented Ross has a grudge against Brian Billick because the Dolphins only 2007 victory was over the Billick coached Ravens. That lone victory drove up the franchise value by $25 million.

It's reported the next time Ross saw Billick he snouted out to Billick, "you owe me $25 million dollars"! Also, as you know, Ross would not allow Ireland to interview Billick for the hc vacancy this year.

So yes, I believe the St Louis media reports that we would miss out on RG3 simply because Ross wont negotiate with them because he's a very sore loser(Fisher sweepstakes).

Anyone watching the NFL Network?

Manning will be awesome next year he'll give us at least 12 wins and bring us deep into the playoffs and Miami will be the talk of the football universe agains. Then 2013 comes and he starts to slow down but we still win 10 games and make the wild card. Then 2014 comes and he's done and we're back to where we are now. 2012-2014 will be 2008-2011 all over again. Unless Ireland and Philbin have an ingenious plan to mold a QB after Manning for the next two years we're going to be sitting here regretting his signing for years to come. Manning would be fine, but when he hinders our chance of getting a young, healthy, franchise quarterback or other elite pieces we can be adding in FA we should shy away and let another team overspend and ruin their future (Jets maybe *wink*)

Peyton is not going to play in Denver or kc or Washington or new york or any other cold weather locale. Am I the only one who's watched his career and how obviously uncomfortable he is in the cold?!?!

Here's some things you didn't know about me.

-I want Peyton to give it to me hard n dry!
-My predictions are actually courtesy of Michael Lombardi of NFL network.
- I don't really believe in Chemtrails
- I know I'm a pathetic loser
