Maybe Dolphins learning to manage expectations

One of the talking points the Dolphins had in their notes today was about transparency. The club wants to be more transparent. Owner Stephen Ross said it. General Manager Jeff Ireland said it.

I'll write more about it in my column in Tuesday's Miami Herald because transparency by an NFL team must be managed. The NFL is no place to pull back all the curtains and reveal all your secrets and intentions. That's for suckers.

I pray the Dolphins know this. But transparency is good when it's used to manage expectations. And the Dolphins have done a terrible job of doing that in recent years.

Because of some of the more vague things the Dolphins have said -- such as Ross saying he wants to hire a young Don Shula -- the public has taken the statements and built expectations around them. And, of course, when the club does not actually hire a 33-year-old budding superstar coach with a jutting jaw and a planned three-practice-per-day approach, fans are understandably disappointed.

And it is not long before disappointment leads to plain old fashioned anger.

Same can be said with Miami's approach to free agency. When the club made it clear they thought themselves a couple of pieces away from playoff-caliber and a franchise quarterback from Super Bowl contention, many kind of assumed this offseason was going to be one enormous free agency shopping spree.

Even three weeks ago when I shared with you about the meeting Joe Philbin had with alumni in which he cautioned against free agency and stressed the draft, the Dolphins didn't do anything to make that public. I had to work for it. And not every single Dolphins fan reads this blog every single day -- beats me why, but that's another matter.

So some non-Mando readers were shocked when Miami didn't blow up the free agency pool.

"We haven't gone out and gotten major free agents like people thought we would have, but we look at it as if we're in the process," Ross said today, trying to manage expectations going forward. "Free agency has a period to run. There aren't a lot of major names out there but there's the draft and a
whole plan that we have set forth. Some things go well, and some things don't go as you would have liked. You know who I'm referring to from that standpoint -- Peyton Manning. We're looking to take this football team to a different level."

Um, better. Not promising the moon. Setting the record straight. Communicating.

Better than having everyone guess.

I SUPPORT MY DOLPHINS

I LOVE MY DOLPHINS

I WILL GO TO THE GAME AND SPEND MONEY FOR MY DOLPHINS.

No big splash in Free Agency....more like a dull thud!

It's all about the money! Manning is now the highest paid player in the NFL. Ireland/Ross thought they could get him for a song...until everyone realized that his arm was back and he began throwing like the Peyton of old. So, he went where the money was. Same with Flynn.

We don't have the cash for a big name FA signing. That's Ireland's fault!

B.Marshall wanted out of Miami. So, they got rid of him BEFORE it became a spectacle! And, it would have been.

What's Ross going to do when no one shows up to the games?

Like I said....it's ALL about the money!!!

lastly, it is time for us serious dolphins fans than have been on here for a while(some of which i have never agreed with) or at least have shown lasting support to stop coming up with our own separate fan sites and pages for discussing and band together and form one site. so it's definitely not about having the same or even similar opinion, but being interested in having an intelligent, selective, and loyal group of followers of the miami dolphins have an arena for debate and discussion.
Since some of us (including me) have computer skills of varying degrees, it shouldnt be hard to do, with the creators being equal partnered moderators it would work pretty slick...
or we can just continue to have our own pieces splitting up a fan base that would and should be unified.
just a thought.

inimounts - I never said NO free agency. I was refering to those teams that go and sign a whole bunch of big names and try to buy their way to a championship like Philly did last year....like the Skins have been doing for decades. Look at the FA signings the Jets made last year....everyone around here (probably you as well) was crying like a bunch of little babies about what awesome moves the Jets were making and how they were getting soooo much better in FA. Well....how did that work out? That's my point.

Of course teams are going to bring in FAs...they're going to fill gaps in their roster...they're going to add depth...and yes, they may sign a big name to try to get them over the hump. That's what good teams do. It never fails though....there's always some team that thinks they can build the "dream team" through FA....I guess you'd be one of those GMs.

@Texas

Tannehill is too low to go that high in the draft. 7 starts doesn't give me a warm feeling he will be NFL ready anytime soon.

Texas,

I liked your draft as well. I might have taken a WR like Streeter instead of a CB. I'm still trying to live the fantasy that Davis and Smith will finally make a good duo and we signed Marshall for the nickle.

Now i have to slice some limes. Vacation is bxxxtch but someone has to do it. :)

JS, I like a WR in AJ Jenkins. He's been moving up the boards but to me he's more a #2 WR but a good one. He reminds me of John Taylor from the 49ers back in the Montana days. A little shorter tho.

As far as Tannehill I put him right up there a little ahead of Weeden and Cousins. And it is mostly on future potential. I feel in the long run he'll be a better pro. I also like Cousins.

I kind of wonder if a Blackmon type WR played for all three which one we'd be rating the highest. Hard to do but I think both Cousins and Tannehill's consistency issues would not be there.

Boycott the team

It is ALWAYS about the money

Channing Crowder said Jeff Ireland has been getting kickbacks from players

Why else is the team the lowest ever, losing, garbage team that has severe CAP issues and terrible players

Philbin is too stupid to coach the best college player EVER

Sherman was fired from Texas A&M for losing and choking w double digit leads 6-6 in a weak division and then FIRED

So Ireland laps up a OC with 0 game day experience and a fired crap college coach

add to the list highest paid QB 34 year old FIRED back up from a losing team, garbage Garrard

We then lost our best player on offense because his wife was a crime victim?
and then let Y-bell our defensive captain & leading tackler of four years go
Will Allen our best CB has signed w the Patriots
Patriots could not wait to Get Allen and immediately signed him for 1 Million dollars

sean smith the worst rated started CB however was kept in the secondary LMAO!

The Dolphins are a 1.1 Billion dollar pile of trash left by Wayne and Ross got suckered on that deal and the puppet Parcells regime that further added to the trash pile

JEF FIRELAND has done his worse job yet and only created further holes in the team

Floridas Tim Tebow was a steal and win a few SuperBowls

Jets now have Tebow

Pats got Brady

Fitzmagic will be back & better & the Bills also got the best pass rusher in the NFL (a position the Dolphins needed to fill, Ireland signed a discarded JET back up DE in FA to start for the fish)

Ireland then landed Garrard who no one else in the NFL wanted unless they needed some one to clean the locker room toilets after all u can eat spicy chili & beans buffet

3.29.12 Protest Fireleand

Good day Sir!

Thanks Rick,

I'd much rather be slicing limes. They go with so many things. The none Streeter choice is more a lack of me not knowing him all that well. I will have to watch some games of him and see. Enjoy the vacation!

JackSparrow, Tannehill actually had a total of 19 games. He only played 7 his JR year and 12 his SR year. Thanks for checking out the site.

Texas,

The biggest plusses to Tanny is according to experts, his arm, and his footwork. Footwork is great and needed to be a top QB, but not what makes a great QB. Every NFL QB has a decent arm, and those who are advertised as an Arm rarely do well. He sounds in all honesty like every other big-armed project that flunked out of the NFL.
Remember Gabbert was rated higher than Dalton. Alex Smith #1 pick. JaMarcus Russell, Heath Shuler, Rick Meyer, David Carr, Akili Smith. Experts get it wrong as many time as they get it right. I like the history and seeming guarantee that Cousins or Weeden bring that they are solid, and will either be OK or great. But not a bust. Tannehill will either live up to potential, or flop. Scares me.
But wish for who you like. At least it can be a discussion.

*AJ Jenkins I've never seen play. May be awesome. No idea. Size, speed sound OK. As long as he can ball after the catch.

Ross is a clueless jackass living in denial. He has obviously learned nothing and is only trying to put the best face he can on this mess. But even if you polish a turd, it's still just a turd.

inimounts,

My goal is definitely not to split up the fan base. I have been a reader of this blog since 2004 and a regular contributor for quite awhile now. Really I see my site as just another avenue for people. I will still be reading Armando's stuff daily and be a full supporter of him as I have for years now, I just felt the need and want for more options, and why wish for it when I could be the one to do it? I want ALL fans, even ones who consistently disagree with me! If everybody agreed with me I would just shut the blog down because it'd be boring as heck! The only posts that wouldn't make it on the site is if they start something like "Ohio, your a bleeping idiot, you don't know bleeping anything" cuz those types just do not add anything to good conversations. I hope this helped everyone further understand my thought process and purpose......PS: I know I will never come even close to Armando's following, and that's not my goal! I've enjoyed this blog and will continue to enjoy this blog.

DolphinTalk.wordpress.com

Would love to here more from you!

Of the QB's you list that flopped I was a fan of Russell (I was WAY wrong on that one), Smith (not any more) and Gabbert. I still feel Gabbert can be a very good NFL player but this next season will be more telling. I am sticking by that tho. Now if Jax gets him no weapons that will be their own fault.

As far as Tannehill I go by my own opinion of him. He is definitely a reach at 8. No doubt there but I feel he's just a notch above Cousins and Weeden. To me he's ranked in the late 20's as far as ranking but because of Miami's need and wanting the next best QB on the board, he might go at 8. I like Cousins a little more than Weeden but it is really not too much difference and I could be happy with any of the 3. I would not take Cousins or Weeden until the 2nd.

No prob, Texas.
No one's an expert. If we pick Tanny, and he ends up awesome, I'm as happy as the next guy.

BTW, Gabbert can save himself by simply growing a pair. That's the same reason I like Cousins and Weeden over Tanny. Listen to their interviews. Cosuins and Weeden are Alphas; field generals. Gabbert is unsure of himself. He hopes he does well, hopes he read the D right, hopes he can become great... real NFL QBs expect it.
Gabbert, looks scared. Once you get scared in the pocket, it's HARD to rewire your brain. If he gets the fear out of his head, maybe he'll be fine. But scared QBs rarely overcome it. Very difficult.
I saw it in our HS QBs game last year, and he couldn't throw a completed pass after that. Decent talent, but can't escape the closing pocket in his head. Sad.

The team is boring and now all the gossip an soap opera stuff is even more boring.

btw,
I meant to compare interviews of Cousins/Weeden with Tannehill not Gabbert.
I've heard Gabbert interviewed with Gruden, and he was a guy who matched the profile type of a guy who had never had anyone ell him he's wrong. Seemed incredulous. Not unsure, though.

Even the bloggers are boring. Blah blah blah, like a bunch of yapping washerwomen rehashing the same crap all day everday.

JS and Texas,

I'm sure your ignoring the trolls but if not don't listen to em. I'm enjoying your conversation.

I say if Sherman and Philbin like Tannehill then you go get him. If not then I like Weedon next.

The only thing is i don't won't drafting a project future QB to get in the way of drafting a stud DE or WR who will start this season.

I say if Sherman and Philbin like Tannehill then you go get him.

Posted by: Dolfan Rick | March 26, 2012 at 07:36 PM

This has been said over 92 times in the last week. And yet none of you have anything better to do than come back and post the same comments over and over.

If the coaches like a player, they should get him. If not, they shouldn't.

Brilliant.

how could we go after manning with no cap space?? we didnt realize he would command 20 mil/yr??? i'm sure we would have low balled him anyways.

So,

They keep coming back to talk about the same things.....but you keep coming back to troll them about having the conversation.....so doesn't that put you at a level way lower than them?

Rick, I think that is what makes drafting a QB so tough. You can never really be 100% sure unless you're drafting Luck or RGIII. Even then there is still an inkling of doubt. But in normal drafts there is always a gamble that you're missing out on that next great pass rush end or OLB. Or maybe missing out on C. Johnson type of WR.

A bunch of teams gambled last year and we will not know 100% if that payed off for a year or 2. Even Cincy gambled in taking a WR first last draft and hoping Dalton would be there in the 2nd.

they will draft tannehill at 8 like it or not. personally i hate it.

Dolfan Rick,
Thanks.
A project QB in the way of a stud WR or DE is exactly what I decry that Tannehill is. None of the experts claim he's NFL ready. HE IS a project. I can wait a year or two for development of a great QB, but this guy sounds like a 4-5 plan to even find out if he can be something. Been there, that sucked.

No, I don't respond to trolls. Or even rude folks that hide behind their anonymity in this forum. I respect people's opinions when they respect others.
I like to talk football, not get my jollies insulting people.

Btw, to burst your bubble, I doubt this GM/coach will pick a receiever in the 1st. MAYBE if Blackmon falls. But doubtful. Coaches think they can find great receivers late in the draft. Mostly they're right (history proves it). Philbin is like Parcells in this idea. So I wouldn't expect a WR in the 1st, or 2nd.
DE or LB? Yep. Good bet there. I'll call a passrusher in the first. Seems most likely.
-That, or Tannehill. Hoping passrusher.
Cousins or Weeden in the 2nd.

JS, btw I really like Mercilus more than Ingram and Upshaw these days. I use to have Upshaw first then Ingram then Mercilus but I like the big play ability of Mercilus a little more.

I've already picked out my 1/6 brown paper bag for the upcoming season.

Ohio, not sure I mentioned it the other day but great job on the site you created. It looks really well done.

Dusty...
The media all tell us Tannehill should be our choice. Do the FO listen? Maybe.
This is the exact reason I come here, and twitter, to continually blow the horn to let the media and fans know that there IS another choice other than Tannehill.
Omar is in gay love with Tanny. So is Cote, and Hyde. Ugh.
But what does the coaches really think? I don't know, and neither do the columnists. No one is showing their hand yet.
So on I will go defending our right to demand someone other than a project with a big arm and little bigtime QB experience.

I can try. :)

Guess Armando didn't like what I posted about Ross and THE SCOUT as he or his peps or censors are now blocking postings. NO curses yet they deny posting.

Thanks Texas,

Sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you...got busy last night

Mercilus is cool, Texas. Haven't seen him play. Virtually never watch Illinois.
Like SEC talent better in general. Proven against tougher competition.
Not against picking him.
or Coples either. Crap shoot.

Texas,

Finally someone on here mentions Mercilus. I've been trying to get someone to bite on that for days.

I'm all about production at the collegiate level and not so much about size and such.

I always try to remember the 2 Smith's. Sammy and Emmitt.

Sammy was a physical speciman and Emmitt was not but he had 4 very productive years at Florida.

We all know the the rest of the story.

Hmm, just noticed Ingram was 6-1. Missed that.
Liking Upshaw/Coples or Mercilus better. 6-1 sounds like a pass specialist.

What a band of stupid morons these two, Ross and his incompetent Ireland. The team is better now than in 2007, of course if you setup the level so low. Maybe a season of 8-8 is like winning the SB for them. The Fins won’t win more than 5 in 2012 with what they have.

Fans please put your money elsewhere and BOYCOTT until that moron Ross respects us or by miracle sell the team.

LOL Rick, yes I remember Sammy well. We always seemed to be looking for that back to help out Marino but could never quite find the guy. Byars might have been the best for the Marino years.

JS, if you watch games or have the Illinois vs Ohio State game recorded Mercilus goes up against Adams OT for Ohio State. Mercilus was able to play RE and LE so it wasn't a 100% against Adams but I would say of the snaps Mercilus won more. Was a pretty even battle tho.

.so doesn't that put you at a level way lower than them?

Posted by: Ohio Dolfan | March 26, 2012 at 07:46 PM

You are the one that is low. You come to Armando's blog to promote your own blog. You are using his blog to lure people into making more hits on your site and less on his. Unethical by all accounts. He should ban you. I will alert his attention to it. Cheap loser.

JS,to

I like Weedon as well. The trouble is i would like us to get one of the top WR's in the 2nd like Kendall Wright or Sanu.

The best case scenario for me is for us to actually do some wheeling and dealing with the extra 3's we have and bring home Weedon, Mercilus and Wright.

I know i'm a dreamer but i'm not the only one.....lol.

zzzzzzzz,

go away!!

Hey Rick, why not dream bigger. I would forgo the Tannehill pick if we could get Blackmon, Weeden or Cousins and lets say McClellin. I could be extremely happy with that draft. And start to be a little optimistic.

MY YOU SHOULD SEE THE SPRAY PATTERN i LEFT AFTER A NICE PORTERHOUSE AND BOTTLE OF WINE LAST NIGHT. MAN ITS GONNA BE HARD TO CLEAN THAT ONE UP.

Texas,

Blackmon would be just what the doctor ordered for us IMO.

After this lackluster offseason.

Sounds like I hit ZZZZZZ's soft spot, haha

D RIck,
Got a feeling that Kendall Wright is a bust. No good explanation for why, but feel it.

Sanu may be a 3rd, prob 2nd. Toon is a 3rd, and has similar size, skills, speed. Either way, I think 3rd is the first possible round we look for WR. Philbin doesn't subscribe to diva receiver mindset. Hence Marshall left town.
Some of the best receivers in the game are late round finds. Personally I'm down for top round receiver, but trying not to get my hopes up. Think it'll be 3rd at best. Everything Philbin says and does spells this to me.

Rick I do doubt that Blackmon slips to us at 8 or that we'd wheel and deal for him but I would sure like the pick.

Either way, Blackmon, Weeden and McClellin or Mercilus, Weeden and Wright or Sanu. Would be a good draft.

Armando knows I've been a regular here for a long time and he knows his followers won't "leave" him for my blog

And he's especially not going to listen to some troll with a fake name, so good luck buddy

Ohio,

Fake name? Do your friends call you Ohio???

Did you ask Armando's permission to advertise your blog here and steal his clients? Of course you didn't. You are a parasite.

His name is Jon zzzzzzzzz, What is yours??
