Alex Smith also not all that into Dolphins

More bad news?

How about this: Multiple sources tell me that the only way Alex Smith is going to sign with the Dolphins is if Peyton Manning goes to San Francisco.

That's right, even the jilted 49'ers quarterback would prefer to return to the team that jilted him over the Dolphins organization that on Sunday tried to recruit him to Miami. Smith's camp has made this clear to the Dolphins.

I suppose that is one reason they are today scheduled to host former Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard -- a quarterback that obviously does not rise to "franchise quarterback" status but is, well, a body.

I posted previously that the Dolphins should be wise in handling Smith because, frankly, he has been a good-not-great player in seven previous seasons. So the Dolphins must resist the temptation to go overboard on this guy because making a splash for the sake of public relations may soothe feelings short-term but is a long-term road to unemployment.

And there is definitely pressure on the Dolphins, particularly general manager Jeff Ireland, to give a public relations answer to what is a business approach. Peter King of Sports Illustrated wrote in his Monday Morning quarterback column that Ireland needs to do something out of desperation.

These are King's words:

"In the history of NFL general managers, Ireland is on the coldest streak ever. He needs to do something right. He doesn't even need to hit a home run. A seeing-eye single would do. That may make him more aggressive on Smith today -- and it may make Smith more inclined to go somewhere I don't think he really wants to go.

"Miami looks like the worst team in the AFC East right now. Would Smith rather rub it in 49er GM Trent Baalke's face and run off to a bad team, and would he rather pray for Manning to pick Tennessee or Denver and go back to where he's got the best chance by far of making a Super Bowl run? Ireland may have to do what he loathes -- overspend for an OK player -- just to deodorize the stink of the last few years in Miami."

So the pressure is on Ireland to pay, probably more than Smith is worth. Of course, if Peyton Manning decides to play in Denver or Tennessee, it is now clear he won't get that chance. Because Alex Smith doesn't want to play here that much.

Ireland has got to quit starting every interview with the same question he used on Dez Bryant..."Is your mother a hooker?"...

Phins78....

These guys GOTTA vent....

This is place is as good as any....and maybe...just maybe....Ross or Ireland scroll thru this garbage every once in a while....

The bottom line is this....

For 2 seasons Ross and Ireland have told us that they wanted an UPGRADE @ QB....and for 2 seasons we have been LIED to...right to our faces....

That is NOT acceptable.....If THEY believe MOORE is the guy...then throw resources behind him...and STAND WITH HIM....give him EVERY VOTE of confidence....and a few seasons to prove himself....

but if THEY DON'T belive Moore to be the guy (and they have given EVERY indication that THEY don't...and Henne before that).....

Then don't P*ss on our HEADS...and then look us in the eye...and say its raining.....

you see what I mean....

Alex Smith has spent his entire life in California and would not be able to handle the heat and humidity here.

Get Tebow.

DC, "we know we need to address he quarterback situation, we are not stupid". -steve Ross.

This whole matt Flynn scenario reminds me of the orton scenario. They would've wanted him but at their own price. Why tie up 8% or so of your cap on a player you don't want?

Stick with matt Moore and hopefully they get one of those two. Everything I've heard tells me Cleveland won't draft tannehill but if they do, then a prime player will fall to Miami at 8. Take that guy then take Weeden in the second. It gets complicate if you catch wind of kc or Arizona or Denver wanting Weeden. Ireland will have to play this very carefully.

And to answer your question, I can sees him messing it up. And that would be the end of Ireland.

Unleash The Tebow!

ross only needs to make 2 moves; 1. fire ireland 2. sell the team. its the only way to get our dolphins back!

ok, I am finally had enough of this front office circus. Why would we even entertain Smith? He had one good year and I mean good, not outstanding! He has been through how many Offensive Coordinators in his career and you want to add to that list. Where is the Football Player mentality that is needed at the GM position. Does Ross have any clue what it takes to win at this level? First all, you did not get Manning OK, take the next step and plan for the Draft. Call some teams and stockpile some picks and focus on the 2nd & 3rd round to get a wide receiver & future QB. For this year Matt Moore will be better than any free agent QB available. What we need now is a wide receiver to help him. Oh, well that is just my evaluation and football sense. Good Luck Ross give me a call if your serious about winning, in two years we would win a Super Bowl, guaranteed!!!!

Why does everyone think Tannehill will be gone when Cleveland pick @ #4?

Can someone point to a legit article, published by a legit new organization that indicates the Browns coaching staff and GM has shown interest in Tannehill?

Just saying...until we see public interest like Indy and the Skins have, its all just talk.

I have started taking a different way to work cause I can't drive by the Stadium anymore without getting pissed off. I feel bad for Matt Moore. They not only have done all they can to replace him, they took away his alpha receiver.

If Hartline and Bess and Gates each put up 1000 yards receiving, which none of them have ever done before, that is a grand total of 3000 yards passing.
How much do we need to pay, in excess of the $1mil that Moore makes, for a QB?
How much production is there to get out of our skill players?
We suck because 7 of our top half draft picks of the last 5 years are not on the team and we got nothing for them.
No QB can change that.
Certainly not Flynn/Moore/Tannehill/Smith

What's wrong with wasting a day posting about this horrible front office? They wasted 4 years of my life.

Kris, going even further, I don't even think we need to know what they're thinking. That's fine. But last year, they COULD NOT have been thinking (our goal all along is to have Henne and Moore as our QBs). That WAS NOT the plan. EVERYONE in the NFL laughed at our QB situation. And know what? EVERYONE was right. We started 0-7, ended the Season 6-10. Not a good team.

So, this year, SAME thing. Maybe the plan is Tannehill. But again, we draft 8. What if Cleveland grabs him? What if another team moves ahead of us and grabs him? Do you think Ireland has the balls to move up to get his guy, or is he relying on chance (obviously, this is speculation, I'm sure you don't have the answer to this)?

But that's the problem here. Is someone's 5th or 6th option really a good way to show you're all in on winning? I know things happen, and teams need to be able to take what comes and change on a dime, but by the 5th, 6th option, aren't you just pulling at straws? While other teams go out and MAKE their luck, we just hope it lands in our lap?

Has Ireland been fired yet??

PLEASE dont give Smith 8 mil a year! He doesnt even want to play here! Moore is our guy for now. I still wish theyd hept henne...

Best case scenario: Ireland does the only thing he knows how to do, SCOUT for the draft! Hopefully picks up a couple of good pieces then Ross fires him.

Aa GM's duties requires MUCH MORE than scouting & Irelands track record in that dept. has also not been stellar. However, it's far better than his record of Managing or trying to put this team together.

Worst Case: Ross keeps his eyes closed & insists Ireland is doing a great job.

Ok, I'm with all the rest of you.

Even I have a negative attitude and am down on the phins today.......

KIND OF MAKES YOU WONDER.....HOW INTELLEGENT do you really have to be to be a billionaire? do you just have to know how to STEAL AND BE DISHONEST?
EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD CAN SEE THAT IRELAND IS A COMPLETE F-UP at this job but ROSS. WHAT A COMPLETE JOKE.
FANS NEED TO BOYCOTT THE GAMES NEXT YEAR. LET THE ORANGES SEATS SPEAK VOLUMES TO ROSS!!!

I'd be happy to see them enter the season with

Moore/YOUR DRAFT PICK HERE/Devlin on the QB depth chart.

Ohio, this is my point:

"we know we need to address he quarterback situation, we are not stupid". -steve Ross.

Does turning over every rock after your first 2 "stated" options fell through? Alex Smith? David Garrard? Really?

It's really looking like they are stupid. And I've been down on Ireland, but I wouldn't have called him stupid.

That comment by Ross meant they were not comfortable with Moore as the starting QB (who's to blame them). But to kind of sit back and HOPE you get someone doesn't seem like the best way to fill a decade-long hole that's plagued your GM every year he's been on the team.

Even Winston didn't want to work for his OWN BROTHER at Miami. That's pathetic. Obviously, there is a money issue at Miami. I'd work for Ireland if the price was right.

So the question is this. The draft is coming up right? They gonna need to free up more money somewhere. #8 is gonna cost a chunk of change. They gonna have to cut reggie bush to make way for the #8. Bush the only one I can see getting cut. Green Bay wasn't necessarily a team that used a back like Bush. So I see him getting cut.

Gents, I must now admit; things are pretty bad. Talent-wise these free agent decisions may ultimately prove to be wise. However, the cold fact is that the Miami Dolphins are no longer considered to be a football club that top NFL players appear to want to play for. It is humiliating to see how far this franchise has fallen. I am confident that we will again rise; but when and how seem to be the questions that no one is the front office is offering answers for. Hey, at least we have a nightclub in the stadium now ...

This has been ugly to watch, but reaching for Smith just to save face would just make it worse. A stud QB is what we need, but there are several other needs as well. Smith, at best, represents a slight improvement over Moore. Smith has had a lot more time to develop and show his stuff than Moore. He may be a better game manager (and he should be at this point), but how much better is he going to get? Moore probably has more upside potential at this point. If management doesn't believe either of these guys are what they want, they shouldn't settle. They should use the draft to build the rest of the team so that the new (or existing) quarterback will have something to work with. Even Marino need Clayton, Duper, Moore, and Nathan (add Crash if you'd like).

Finally, if Philbin was sure that Flynn was headed to a Pro-Bowl, they would have done what they needed to sign him. Flynn has never taken a snap with the team on his shoulders or in a one and done playoff situation. Philbin knew that no matter how well he played in his limited experience, or how well he knew his system, he still had everything to prove.

I meant to say does turning over every rock sound like a smart way to fix the situation in my last post.

Also, I don't know if they plan on getting a RT guys. They might just go with what they have on the team now. I mean, we got extra picks, so maybe they grab one in the draft. But a starter? Who knows? Could just be John Jerry.

Jack....cut Bush, nice one...you need to stop drinking in the morning.

Plan A: Manning - fail
Plan B: Flynn - fail
Plan C: Smith? - Bad idea
Plan D: Garrard -- Real bad idea
Plan E: Tannehill - could still happen
Plan F: Cousins - could still happen
Plan G: Weeden - could still happen

All is not lost yet to me. I like all 3 QB's in plan e- f and g.

What scares me though is Ireland is at the helm. If we do not come away with 1 of those QB's, I will be real confused as to why Ireland is still a GM.

If we come away from the draft with plan e, f or g, Ireland will say in his press conference this was the plan all along.

Jack,

So after giving away Marshall for peanuts, you think they will cut Bush after his best year as a pro?

Who will Moore have on offense? He may beg to sit on the bench this year, lol

How about some good news? Like Ireland's fired.

Texas, all this talk swirling around Ireland and the team can't be helpful either. Now the "common theme" around the NFL is no one wants to play for Miami? It's not like they don't pay players (ask Marshall, ask Dansby, ask Long, ask Soliai). It's not like the city is horrible (beautiful weather, fun, high profile).

Is Ireland imploding? Are people fed up with him once and for all? And if so, how would Ross not be able to see that before keeping him as GM?

I'm not believing the hype (YET), but this is more and more looking like a repeat of 2007 (hate to say it). The PR for the team is taking a huge hit (at a time they can't afford to).

PLEASE...

Let this be the end of Little Jeffy Ireland running our proud franchise into the ground.

Let this be the end of star struck Stephen Ross meddling and making a mockery of our team.

PLEASE, Ross- Fire Ireland, hire a knowledgeable, respected football man to run the organization- and shut the f^ck up and stay out of it!

Let Philbin and Sherman instill the Green Bay Way of doing business. Let them draft and develop QBs so that we can get off this crazy merry go round we've been on the last dozen years.

PLEASE, as a 40 year fan of the Dolphins, I'm begging you. STOP THE MADNESS!

peyton is desperate to get another ring.he was looking for the easiest route to get it.that=the afc west, south,or nfc west not the afc east.flynn=much ado about nothing.we've always had d-minded coaches, even shoes(forget cam he defined the term laughingstock).now i think we finally have the offensive minds to develop a young qb(they did work with 2 of the best in favre & rodgers).there are 3 interesting qb's in the draft that can develop for a year behind moore:osweiler, tannehill,& cousins. get 1 of these qb's,1 or 2 wr's,and all the de/olb passrushers types we can with the rest of the picks.sign reggie nelson & give philbin and his staff 3 years to turn it around.

Philbin has to be scratching his head about why he joined this garbage franchise.

How happy is Brandon Marshall to be off this crap team?

DC -- I think most of us agree that players will play where they are wanted as long as the money is right. I don't believe the hype that "players don't want to play in Miami."

I am thinking Philbin prefers to build through the draft rather than FA. I can't remember which press conference he was at but he was talking QB and said something that made me think he'd prefer drafting a QB and bringing them along in their system.

So I am not so sure plan's A and B that I wrote about were actual failures. It may have just been looking at all the options they have.

Now with all that said, if they don't draft a QB, then I will be perplexed. :)

IF the Dolphins felt that Moore is a high quality QB, then why would they pursue Manning when it was clear that Manning wanted no part of Miami. He only interviewed with Miami as a favor to Marino according to various reports.

IF the Dolphins like Moore so much, then why did they try to sign Flynn?

IF the Dolphins like Moore so much, then why are they trying to sign Smith?

IF Moore is such a quality young QB, then why has no one tried to trade a 1st or 2nd round pick for him?

I'm NOT putting Matt Moore down. The Dolphins are doing that on their own. Manning, if healthy, is a clear upgrade. Flynn and Smith, according to the actions of the Dolphins, are upgrades.

So, the Dolphins do not want to overpay? Seems like they are overpaying for their GM, and not just in salary but in poor performance and public relations.

DC,

I agree.......i think that was a real D move for Clark to diss the entire franchise like that, even if what he said is true.

Now the media is taking off with it, irresponsibly in my opinion, with headlines like "nobody wants to go to the Dolphins". It's ridiculous. Because one player said it now the COOL thing to talk about is how horrible it is in Miami.

Dah Bears!

I am from England and have been following Miami Dolphins since the eighties watching games to the early hours of the morning then going straight to work – I am absolutely feed-up to the back teeth – all we get is one bad season after enough and every year the same old hype preseason and nothing good materialises and I get older and more distraught. Come on guys (Ross & Ireland) give us some good news – have a clear strategy and execute or be done and move on.

maorji, you are harping on the stadium site as the reason why free agents do not want to play in miami? miami has 8 games in the stadium, they can give a cr@p where it is. they may care if it was grass or something, but the actual site means zero.
it isnt a case of free agents not wanting to play in miami, solai resigned for a lot less than market to stay, marshall the CB signed for 3 years, OL signed 1 year, DL signed a contract to come. winstrom wanted 6 mil a year? really?
i am not defending reland, he is terrible, but people read to much into ESPN touting the "hot free agents" like flynn? flynn has 2 starts to his credit in 4 years and now he is signed for almost 9 mil a year? that would have been a huge mistake to give 9 mil to flynn, there is a reason that teams didn't even bring in this "hot free agent" and his questionable arm had a lot to do with it.

Put Philbin in 100% control of all decisions. Give him 5 years.

I've been gone for about 5-6 months but, felt compelled to come back & post this. So, I apologize if it is too long. So, if you don't like long posts, stop reading now!

I see some old reg's here this am like DC & Mark in To. Hello to you!

This team is lost. Owner is oblivious. It's GM has no business holding his position. I said it then, the Harbaugh/Sporano & hooker incidents will haunt this franchise for years. People remember! How can anyone deny it's not the truth? No one wants to come here. It's even being tweeted for god sakes!

Why would they fire Sporano & not Ireland with him?Firing Sporano means nothing unless Ireland joined him.

Ireland helped build this team, now, he's rebuilding it? Incredible display of ignorance & ineptitude.

Offseason Happenings:

Fisher - You have to wonder if Miami would STILL be waiting for Fisher if he hadn't picked a team yet. A desperate & pathetic display.

None of the other coaches they interviewed were hired elswhere. Did we interview the right candidates? Good luck Philbin!

Manning - a complete waste of time pursuing an aging QB. Why would Miami bring an old man into a rebuilding zone? Did they think Manning would be dumb enough to think Miami was close to competing for anything but 3rd place? How dumb did we look when he wouldn't come to us & let us down first? Utterly pathetic display of desperation.

Flynn - lowballing? QB's in the NFL get paid. Plain & simple. If you don't pay, even overpay, you won't sign anyone. That's how it is. And Flynn signed a MODEST contract to boot.

Smith - see above

Marshall - not happy to see him go but understand why. If this system will be like GB's, they don't have that 1 dominant WR. Every week someone else takes a turn.

However, value? You don't just sell your BEST piece for scraps. Making the choice to trade him, OK. MAKE SURE YOU GET VALUE & HAVE A BACKUP PLAN!

I see no hope for this once proud franchise until Ross & Ireland leave. May God have mercy on Dolphins Fans!

Somebody please call an exorcist.

Hmm...I'm thinking that Ireland makes his decisions based on Tarot cards or horoscopes or something! Maybe he stole some Voo-Doo priestess from the Saints....

This is a "make-it or break-it" year for our General Manager. You see, there's no one left to blame! Parcells is gone. Henning is gone. Sparano...gone. Henne...gone. Brandon Marshall ...gone. Nolan...gone.

So, if Miami doesn't break 8-8 or better this year...the only person left to blame is little Jeffy Ireland!

The Media has been wrong every single story so far and now they will be wrong about the dolphins. Philbin loves the draft we already have a solid team. Everybody in the media and low level dolphins fans are so quick to jump on everything negative. Just watch Miami wins ten games this year. Seriously watch

This proud franchise just stinks. I am almost ashamed to call myself a Dolphins fan. I didn't want Manning, I wanted Flynn ... how could we let the Sea Chickens get him???? Irland should get the axe!

I've been a Dolfan for 32 years and am disgusted with the incompetent ownership and management we've had since Don Shula retired and Joe Robbie passed on. It's clear, top players won't come to Miami because of Ross's football ineptitude and treatment of coaches, coupled with Ireland's desire to impress Ross by being cheap. Turning around a team isn't that difficult. There are innumerable examples; the most recent being what Elway and Fox did in one season--

So, let me get this straight, everyone is pissed off for the following reasons:

1. Harbaugh decided to stay home and coach the 49ers
2. Fisher chose STL instead of emasculating Ireland
3. Manning snubs Miami along with AZ, Seattle, TN & probably SF too?
4. Flynn signs with Seattle because Ireland is smart enough to NOT OVERPAY A BACKUP?
5. Marshall gets traded for two 3rd round picks after dropping 3 or 4 game winning passes last season.

Come on guys get real...most of those moves above were for the best. You guys are taking it too personal.

Here are some things the FO got right:

1. Fired Sparano
2. Cut Henne
3. Signed Bush
4. Resigned Soliai
5. Hired Philbin over Fisher

Come on guys, the glass is half full!

DC, going with john Jerry may be a smart move at rt. I mean you have to give that 3rd pick a chance at some point. And that was an expensive 3rdand pick because there was a bunch of talent on the board at that point including jimmy Graham and Aaron Hernandez.

The fact that a five year rebuild is failing says a lot.

How does a team without a star player have so little cap space?

The drafts have been horrid.

The incidents involving Dez Brant's interview and the backstabbing of Tony Sparano's firing show that there exists very serious organizational problems and that cannot be wished away at this point.

Ross should put Philbin in charge and let Philbin hire a professional and respectable GM and they let the new GM and Philbin build the team their way.

Why does Ireland still have the GM job? He might be a decent scout, but he's a terrible GM.

Really? Upgrade at QB with David Garrard??? Really?
And yet the Dolphins wonder why nobody wants to buy their season-tickets anymore.

dolphins will get the qb that peyton leaves out of a job smith tebow or hasselback!.

12-4

NH, I think everyone's pissed because they've seen Miami make head-scratching moves in the past, only to be mediocre. Once again, we're coming off a mediocre Season, and more head-scratching moves.

I think you actually have to do something before people trust you. New Owner (1 winning Season in his repertoire). GM (also 1 winning Season with this team, and at the very best, a mediocre to ok job done talent-wise last few years). New HC (hasn't done anything so we don't know what he's capable of).

Are fans wrong to 2nd-guess the team (THIS LEADERSHIP ESPECIALLY)? Or are they totally justified by the last 4 years? If you're honest, you'd say they are totally justified.

Nonetheless, this could all turn out ok in the future. But right now, without any foresight, this looks really bad. You optimistic guys need to at least accept and admit that (again, if you're asking people to be honest and not just reflexively hate on the team, you guys need to do the same thing). On the face of it, this stinks to high heaven.

F that fat tub of GOO, Peter King. Who cares what he and Florio make up. They'll be on to the next 'thing' soon enough in the next news cycle. They passed on Flynn . Good. Philbin would know. The Seahawks are guessing on 2 Wynn Flynn. And, everyone else passed too. Manning at $90 million. Please. He's 35 and one sack away from retirement. The only mistakes they made are talking to either player and publically promising a 'splash'. They knew Flynn's contract demands before flying him in. Manning was always a non-starter. Why bother? IF they sign Smith at $7-8 million fine. Otherwise, pass on that 'splash' too. Just go with Matty and draft a QB next year. Tannehill is a ridiculous reach. Sherman knows that. Weedon is old. Just forget change at starting QB this year unless Smith is available. And, Brandon Marshall is a LOSER. Good riddance.

Hey Red Mother...Ross may want Tebow to fill his empty seats, but Philbin knows better and would quit before he made Tebow his starting QB.

This is not that hard to figure out...Seattle saw Flynn as an upgrade to T. Jackson, Miami did not see him as an upgrade to Moore, at least not to the tune of $7M/year.

I think Smith is even less cost effective, especially if your philosophy is to build through the draft.

Lot's of emoting going here.

I know I will reserve judgement until after the draft.

Hey, if all else fails, I'm sure John Beck will be available :0)

Did Ireland ask Flynn for his mother's line of work? that might explain things......
