Peyton Manning facts and speculation

Let's separate facts from speculation this morning because there is much of both swirling around the Peyton Manning derby.

Fact: The Dolphins are in lockdown mode. The organization has decided and orders have been passed throughout the organization that no one is to speak to the media even under the cover of background or off-the-record conversations. People that normally answer my texts or emails are ignoring me now -- beyond my family, I mean.

Fact: One source that ignored the orders at least one last time before also shutting down told me the Dolphins still expect to speak with Peyton Manning before he picks a team to play for in 2012, assuming he's healthy.

Fact: Peyton Manning himself has not said which team, if any, are the leaders in his mind on where to play. He has not eliminated the Dolphins yet.

Fact: ESPN reported this morning Manning's two "likeliest landing spots" are Arizona and Denver," and that Miami "isn't as high on the list" as the other two.

Fact: Last I spoke with someon in the Manning camp, which was Friday, I was told it was Arizona and Miami the likely spots with Denver needing to make up ground. Obviously this was before the Manning visit to Denver.

And now some interpretation:

The Dolphins are not out of this yet. The Dolphins typically operate by having general manager Jeff Ireland telling the agent representing the player Miami is interested in not to speak to the media about Miami's interest -- an approach that almost always gets ignored because an agent's agenda, by definition, is to drum up interest in his client not diminish it.

In this case, however, there may be nothing wrong with diminishing the Dolphins because there is so much attention on Manning and so many team interested that not including the Dolphins in the conversation is not a hinderance to his marketability.

Moreover, when the Dolphins have previously gone into lockdown mode it is never to cover that nothing is happening, but rather usually to protect something that is happening. I believe the Dolphins want to play this coy because they still clearly believe themselves in the game and don't want to risk being eliminated.

I think they also might have gotten spooked by that report that Manning was upset by all the media attention in Miami. Guess what, folks? He got the exact same treatment in Denver when he arrived Friday night -- complete with Helicopter chase coverage -- and the Arizona media hasn't exactly ignored his presence, either. So the attention concerns still feels artificial.

This is a concern: Denver, by sheer consequence of having John Elway as president, had someone who speaks the same language as Manning with him constantly. That's a plus. Arizona, by sheer consequence of the fact coach Ken Whisenhunt is an offensive mind and has taken a team to the Super Bowl and has a longstanding relationship with Manning, has someone with Manning who speak the same language as Manning with him constantly.

I'm not sure who the Dolphins would put in front of Manning who speaks the same language. Owner Stephen Ross doesn't. Ireland has never played or coached. And unless I am unaware of it, neither coach Joe Philbin or offensive coordinator Mike Sherman have any sort of previous longstanding relationship with Manning. This is troubling.

The Dolphins could address the issue by having Dan Marino part of the team working to get Manning ... but I don't know if Marino would do that. I don't know if it would feel contrived since Marino really doesn't work for the team. I don't know if that's the best or only way to get past the issue of making Manning feel he's got someone in the room that speaks his language.

Great post Armando!

Shula and Marino are the CROWN JEWELS of the Miami Dolphins.

They could be amazing assets to the club. They both were forced out prematurely, and I don't think those wounds have been repaired.

It is time.

Phins78, man you couldn't be more right. It amazes me that fans of a team beg for the team to fail.

Denver really does make the most sense to me. Miami has been perpetually going nowhere forever.

Can't say I feel more confident we'll land Manning today than yesterday.

It's time to start thinking about what to do if we can't land Manning OR Flynn (he's getting more attractive with each previous option being taken off the table). That will at least leave Miami room to make one big FA acquisition (or a few smaller ones). Say, Reggie Nelson and Pierre Garcon. Or Carl Nicks, fill some holes currently in the roster. Can we afford a Mario Williams? Or a Vincent Jackson?

Seeing Matt Moore as our starting QB next year will make me extremely unconfident, but if he's all we got he's going to need A LOT of help, so Ireland better get him some (on both sides of the ball).

Preach on about leadership Tiger douche while you degrade the Italian people by calling Sparano pizza boy. All Italians are worthless right, only know how to make pizza. You are a moron. Your posts suck and are a waste of time to read. Please seek information on re~education, you are in dire need.

THATS RIGHT CAPTCRUNCH: BERRIES? SIGN R.WAYNE FIRST!!

DolphinDave,

Seattle doesn't play in the same division as Devenver...it's KC....which can get cold and snowy in December and January.

Big difference between playing single games in New York, Buffalo and New England and playing 8 home games and perhaps three playoff games in Denver. Take a look at Manning's record in cold weather....it's dismal! I'll be shocked if he picks Denver over Arizona or Miami.

Another READING CHALLENGED poster @ 12:42....looking to nit pick....and most likely only looking for a fight to pass the time of his/her useless life...

I SAID....Like most NFL players...Peyton BONDS with money....i DID NOT SAY he ONLY bonds with money....

The FACT that I DID NOT say ONLY...yet you type ONLY in your response says...

a. you are a complete moron who can't comprehend what he/she reads....

b. you reading level is on par with a 1st/2nd grader.....who is still learning how to read...and sometimes imports and imagines words that aren't really there.......

c. A TROLL who simply wants to pick a fight for the SAKE of picking a fight.....

for the sake of your OWN education...i hope you are the latter.......

In any case....find another poster to get your rocks off with.....I won't be entertaing you today.....

Good day Sir......

Michael,

Those that are quick to call everyone else an idiot are often the idiots. Wise men know they are not so wise. It's the idiots that think they are smartest.

Just hope and pray he goes to any OTHER team. We have basically dropped the ball again and let RG3 slip to the Redskins. I guess its Flynn. But nothing good can come from any of this. We are on a road to failure as always.
Ross does not know how to run a team and neither does Ireland. They are like children in the league. Amateurs cannot win against professionals. This is one time I agree with Dan Schneider. The Redskins have shored up their QB spot for years to come and we have only regressed. We suck.

Manning will be a Bronco. Miami has proven they will have to have a GM who is a kind person, and a coach who is attractive. However, none of this can happen with the current ownership we have.

Ross must go. Bring back Huizenga. This franchise will never be the same. The only way to fix this is to force him out. QUIT GOING. Period.

Miami is a joke, and everyone knows it. Manning is not a dummy.

ohboy, he been posting the same stuff for 2 days. He's saying that the Rams would have accepted V Davis in a trade for the number 2. That is such trash. The Rams wouldn't take a player in trade because they wanted to protect their cap position. They didn't want a play in the trade and Washington have the bullets to pull the trade through.

oscar,

there isnt much positive about 6-10. Or 3 losing seasons in a row. Or no QB for 16 years. Or 1 playoff appearance(loss) in 11 years.

Panting Mangled, yeah like I said get a hobby, you have much too much time on your hands.

I wonder if Ireland plans to ask Manning if his mom was a prostitute?

Craig M,

The NY ESPN media hates Miami in fact the entire NFL hates the Dolphins. They are hated because of the accomplishment of the 72 Team and will be hated forever or until they make it so easy for a team to win by inserting rules that allows wins.

The days of EARNING the win through smash mouth football, decapitating the QB and punching the WR in his mouth 20yds down field are gone.

We are reduced to flag football and if you all want a glimpse into the future of football just play the rerun of the Pro Bowl.

All thanks to the liberal Commissioner who is dismantling the sport one fine and suspension at a time. Hell, we cant go one stinking week without a player getting a fine or face suspension or an office visit to sit down with the Commish.

Pathetic.

DC....

Don't you think they have already been working on a plan B...or C.....these are continious operations.....they don't just get spun up when the media informs you of their importance.....

Micheal, that is the way idiots respond, by avoiding the topic. Thanks for confirming my thoughts. You probably have never even had a hobby.

10 reasons why Peyton Manning will be a Miami Dolphin:

1. He won't stiff Tim Tebow
2. Miami will offer the most money
3. He would make living in Miami impossible if he stiffs the Dolphins
4. Miami has the best wide receiving corp. of the bunch
5. Miami has the best defense of the bunch
6. Miami has the best overall weather for an older/injured football player
7. Philbin will have a better offensive plan than the other two, don' t underestimate this guy
8. Salary cap space and desire to add Reggie Wayne and/or Dallas Clark
9. Miami will have the last right of refusal and the best offer
10. And don't kid yourself, playing the Patriots and the Jets each twice a year is a positive when it comes to Peyton Manning, to be the best you need to beat the best and I don't think playing the likes of the Rams,Seahawks, Raiders, Chiefs and Chargers will be all that exciting for him.
Oh and nobody listens to a word Morts grandson says anyway, I think he went to Duke

PHINS78,

You apparently haven't been watching the 16 other quarterbacks since Marino. Shula was a legend. When we lost Harbaugh is how this all started. The way Miami screwed Sparano is why we can't have Manning. Geez, look at Jason Taylor for example, they ran him out of town. Ownership is key, you must lead by example. Why on earth did they keep Ireland? Because Ross is blind, and in the dark without him. He was welcomed by the Parcells regime, and that is all he knows. Quit going to the games, and he will sell out....

Adam Shefter is reporting that the chances of sign PM are 50:50 Denver/Zona. Pretty disappointing if true.

Huizehga sold the team in an estate planning move. That means he's preparing for his death and to pass his fortune on to his heirs.

I have to say, though- Huizenga was a great owner compared to the one we have now. He NEVER embarrassed the franchise the way Ross does.

TigerSam,

Where did the Rams say they would take Davis and Hartline in a trade and say it was comparable to what the Redskins offered. You mean because YOU think it's comparable. NEWFLASH: Brian Hartline is a fourth round draft choice and nobody rates him as anything. Davis, a FA in a year or tow. Why do the Rams want that?

You don't know what the conversations were with the Rams and Redskins and Dolphins, so why do you comment on it? The truth of the matter is that Synder wanted RGIII and he was NOT going to be outbid for him. So I guess you just wanted Ireland to keep adding and adding and adding....GREAT strategy!

As for Manning, we haven't even had our chance yet. I believe that will still happen. So maybe you should wait until it all plays out before you listen to the New York media and then proceed to bash Ireland and Ross. They haven't done anything yet....so chill!

Kris,
Maybe you should read your post as a blogger who doesn't know you would. This is what you ONLY said below. So I ONLY based my response on that. I did not choose to read anymore into it than what was written. It certainly appears to me your point was that it was all about money, since there was nothing in it to suggest the contrary. Calling people names serves no purpose other than to reduce the image others have of you.

. . . . .

Peyton is like most NFL players....he BONDS with money.....Peyton and MONEY speak the same language.....CONSTANTLY.....

Show him the green....and let the sparks fly....

Panting Mangled, exactly what topic do you want me to speak on. The only topic you brought up with me were my post, and I'm responding to that. And again I tell you anyone who counts 19 posts must lead a very boring life. Want to talk about something else.

Armando said:
"I'm not sure who the Dolphins would put in front of Manning who speaks the same language".

And I said:
What about "King" Carl Peterson/a very well respected person in the NFL and was in the middle of Jeff Fisher presentation at the begining of the year.

But beside that, I want to follow the original Plan...sign Matt Flynn!!!

1

Kris, I would like you to meet Michael.
Micheal, I would like you to meet Kris.

Perfect match.

Now you can spend the day calling everyone who disagrees with you idiots and morons.

Have fun!!!

Craig M, great post on Davis and Hartline. This isn't Madden.

Reality, read my post about Family. You, I and every Dolphins Fan chose this Team as part of our Family. And, if you have a Family, you have to go thru problems and adversities with them(an them with you). The other option is, find yourself another Family.

NY "G",

You dead right about the New York media. What we as fans have to stop doing is buying into what these idiots are saying. It's become very apparent to me that guys like Scheffter, Florio and La Confara have it in for the Dolphins. People need to see their biases' before they buy into it.

I guess if enough people say something is true it must be true....right? Hogwash.....

Panting Mangled, if you walk like a duck, and sound like a duck......guess what it must be a duck...........right.

Poor fan base, rookie head coach, lunatic owner: that's our sad reality.
Manning will sign in Denver, Flynn in Seattle and Matt Moore will be our week 1 starter. Unless Ireland drafts Tannehill at 8 and tries to sell him as our next franchise QB...

Why wouldn't NFL players bond with $? They are 1 good hit away from early retirement.

'The sky is falling....the sky is falling'....

Half the guys who continue to use this blog to bash Ross and Ireland and blame them for the last 40 years of Dolphin football are guys that didn't even want Manning in the first place.

Really comical actually.....

yes, it's interesting. even when miami was the supposed frontrunner for manning, the pundits at espn would never really emphasize this, instead focusing on his other options. clayton seems the most fair-minded. the anchors all drink the new york kool-aid (although i think mort actually lives in arkansas).

Craig M, many don't realize that Ross has been the managing owner for only 2 years.

There was a post yesterday blaming Ross for drafting Vernon Carey in the 1st round. Of course that was 9 or 10 years ago.

Some of you people will believe anything you read, while others are just plain quitters. Give up on the Manning chase just because there is a stupid report about Denver and Arizona as front runners?

Maybe Manning won't come to Miami because it has so many whinny and crappy fans!

The national media doesn't like Miami since they were not media friendly, but that has since changed this year. The Phins will get their due and will start winning again. All fans should be happy that Ross has laid down the law and wants a franchise QB.

Kris,

Hopefully Ireland has been thinking about all the variables. I'm talking about us, here, the blog. Crying about RG3 isn't going to change anything, so I'd rather be forward-thinking. Things start Tues, so while we're pursuing one player (say Flynn) some other team might be landing 2-3 other guys we want. Seems like a treasure trove of different stories that can come out of that hunt. With Manning in AZ, I think that's what we should concentrate on.

Peyton or not- DRAFT TANNEHILL!

All successful franchises draft a high 1st RD QB, and develop him into a Super Bowl winner.

THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE!

I heard he's going to the Eagles who will then trade Vick to Fins.

The media is the media. How many times have we heard that a particular player was going "here" only to see him sign with another team. Last year it was the Eagles stealing Nnamdi Asomugha when. everyone (including the media) was so sure he was headed to the Jets. Earlier this summer Espn said a deal between Miami and Jeff Fisher was imminent only to see him spurn us for the Rams. Bottom line is speculation is speculation. Nobody knows where Manning's head is. Personally I think we are very much in it. If Peyton was so against what Miami is about, why'd he a condo on south Beach???? And don't forget his wife loves Miami as well. And why would he start his tour from Here. He could,ve started his visits from home if that were the case. Miami has a solid core, cap space and warm weather. And Reggie Wayne wants to play HERE! Not in Denver or Arizona. We will get an audience with Peyton. Whether he chooses us or not is up to him. We fit all of his needs and he knows that.If we miss out on him it's not the end of the world. Let's not forget the numbers: 14 years 1 Super Bowl win and 4 neck surgeries. But I cannot see us being the odds on favorite and just falling totally out of the picture. Matt Flynn is a scary option. I watched him at LSU and was thoroughly unimpressed. He may be a better QB now but I can't see paying Him over 10mil a year to find out.

I don't get it. Can someone explain this to me? Big O tweets that it's a lock with Miami. Then we're competing with teams but still the favorite. Then somehow, through no evidence whatsoever, we're the underdog.

And if you listen to a certain sportswriter who snap, snap, shall not be named otherwise my post will never appear, then Miami is out of it altogether!

I'll tell you what, if I had to bet, I'd bet on Miami. Because first of all, who is such a sh*t that he stops his car for a press conference for local reporters, winks and says we'll see, then doesn't end up signing? You'd have to really be a jerk of major proportions. He'd have to sell his condo. So no, I don't think Peyton's doing that. What he's doing is getting Ross to write a bigger check.

And at this point, I don't even want Manning anymore. I'm depressed after a poster pointed out that yeah, RG3's price tag was big, but likely worth it and they have their franchise QB for 10 years, while we'll have a better record and no chance for a good draft pick the next couple years.

I hope Manning goes somewhere else, but honestly I think the guy is signing here. He wants a big paycheck, he wants to be worshipped, he wants to be the biggest name in town, he doesn't want pressure to go to the SB, he wants a nice place to live. That's all Miami. Denver is cold, they have a crappy O line, and Elway will expect him to deliver a SB if they kick Tembow out the door. In Miami, he's kicking no one out the door and folks are just happy to go to the playoffs.

Oh, it is no secret that the rest of the NFL has hated Miami since the SB days and has done everything in their power to destroy us. Because we went undefeated? Naaah, $.

2 things PM said about the city he would sign are, not in the NFC, and a warm weather city. Denver and Zona don't fill those needs.

Ireland wouldnt know an elite QB if one sat in his lap. But he's great at sniffing out hooka moms! LMAO!!

The Dolphins have a HUGE problem which is that even with the TUNA is long gone, the organization has been left with a trojan worm infection virus Jeff "THE SCOUT".

We (THE FANS) have identified the worms and helped get rid of the Fist Pumper but still cant seem to purge the remaining Trojan "THE SCOUT" because the mother board ROSS has also been infected by the worm.

We have a SCOUT occupying the Gms office and is being allowed to pretend that he is the GM by Ross. Ross wants Manning yet the infection is so bad that they just "may" not have the ability to procure Manning which is based on track records with Harbaugh and Fisher.

I have been posting for 6 days that Manning will be wearing #18 Dolphin uniform and I STILL feel that is doable but the worm and it's infection just may be popping up a Blue screen.

Ross is going to need to WOW Manning and the worm Ireland does not have that in his system. THE SCOUT and his poker face is going to steer Manning away even though Ross is there.

In the end this can be a win, win for us fans.

We win DOOR #1 for the short term by landing Manning. His presence will rub off on the entire team both the O and D and watch how both step it up in droves. The presence of a Champion will pay dividends.

Now the other win DOOR #2 would be if Manning decides to punt on the Dolphins. Ross Hopefully will collate that fault onto THE SCOUT and decide to consider firing THE SCOUT after the draft or end of next season.

The seats at Sun life are going to continue getting sun fade from lack of Butts if Manning does not land here.

New HC, new GM and perhaps play makers will "want" to play here.

Until then, the search for #13 replacement will continue.

I find the most comical part that they call Miami the frontrunner before all of this and somehow, mysteriously, Miami is losing ground?
GIVE ME A BREAK...
Sounds to me that you bring your wife and agent when you are SERIOUSLY considering another destination.
Seeing how the wife is in Miami gives me the idea that Manning has one destination in mind...
By the way, this tour could very well be a diversion as Ireland was mysteriously absent at 2 functions the night before this Manning tour started, COULD IT BE THAT MIAMI IS CRUNCHING NUMBERS with Manning's agent who hasn't accompanied him on this trip? Hmmm...

Im starting to question Miamis interest period. I dont think they are all in and I dont believe Ross is willing to sign a blank check. If that was the case Miamis stock in this deal would not have droped so far so fast. I believe we really are not that interested. I see a safe 2nd or 3rd rounder brought in to challenge Moore. We are going to need a Mark Cuban type to purchase this franchise before we become relevent again. I see maybe 2017 being a turn around year. Thats providing Ross sells. Please Steven Sell this franchise!!!!!

To ohboy,
You are 150% right about my pizza boy comment and I apologize, that was clearly out of bounds.

To Craig,
Of course I did not mean that the possible deal with the Rams would have to be my suggestion to the T. I meant that they were ready to do what it takes to land RG3 and we weren't. The scenario I proposed had nothing to do with it. A competent GM, one who is not just the owner's fall guy but one that can persuade with knowledge and confidence an owner to right the ship is what we need.

Completely agree with Brandrop, those are enough reasons for Manning not to come here.

Samantha, don't be depressed, there was no way Miami could have outbid Washington. We just didn't have the draft choices and the Rams didn't want player in the trade. All we can do is move forward.

The - we are feeling now, is that many here wanted RG3. Be assured. Shula, Marino, Stephenson, for that matter RG3 now, are past, lost, irretrievably. We're looking for others that are acceptable, now.

DC....

I think we are still in the driver's seat for Manning....regardless of what passes for 'reporting' these days.....

If we do lose out on Manning....I think we immediatly go to plan B...i don't know what plan B is but they will unravel it IF we lose out on Manning....or deem him unfit for duty....

one other thing.... miami is in lockdown not because of going for it but because of PR control. i am almost positive manning will not even interview with miami. i think manning signs with the texans!!! you heard it here first!!

TigerSam, if you don't have the ammo you can shoot. The Rams wanted no players include. They wanted to retain cap flexibility. Period./

I think Miami is in an adventagious position if they get the final meeting with Manning. Assuming he even meets with the Fins. Ireland better have Reggie Wayne on speed dial when Manning gets to town as I'm guessing it's going to take a lot to land this big fish.

My nightmare scenario has Manning going to Denver and Miami trading away it's 1st rounder for Tebow. I'll always be a Dolphins fan but if that happened my hope level for 2012 would be next to zero.

Dwight Stephenson was one of the best centers to ever play the game. Unbelievable leverage.

Oh god please no Tebow lol.

I doubt Manning will take his talents to South Beach. Denver has too much to offer and the town has more football savvy than Miami. That's where i think he will end up. The Dolphins have lost much of the mindset that made them great for so many years. They call themselves the Miami Dolphins Organization now. I remember when they used to be called the Miami Dolphins football team. Kind of says it all.
