The Dolphins will meet with Peyton Manning in the coming days, The Miami Herald has learned.
As I reported over the weekend, the meeting will be somewhat out of the box. It will not be at the team facility. It will possibly be at Sun Life Stadium, a source tells me.
[Update: ESPN is reporting this meeting will take place Monday night or Tuesday. ESPN, by the way, reported earlier today that the Dolphins were all but out of the chase for Manning and he would not be taking any more visits with any more teams. I credit them when they get things right or first. I'm going to tell you when they miss, too.]
The meeting will be led by Dolphins coach Joe Philbin. Philbin may include offensive coordinator Mike Sherman in the meeting, although that is not yet clear.
The meeting is expected to be almost 100 percent about football -- Xs and Os -- and Manning and the coach or coaches (if Sherman comes) getting to know each other. The extra-curricular stuff, such as a requisite pitch from the owner and promise of Super Bowl wins may not be part of this Miami pitch because, in part, Manning may be tired of hearing that he is the final piece that will take them to the Super Bowl.
I stress to you this isn't exactly how the Dolphins planned things originally. They planned a more elaborate set-up that would include owner Stephen Ross. It is now possible Ross will not be included in this meeting. This is Manning's preference, I'm told.
This much is also clear: This will be the Dolphins best hope of landing Manning. The team considers it a good opportunity, although I must say from the outside looking in, it doesn't seem as great an opportunity as the 6-plus hour meetings Manning took with the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos.
The Dolphins had planned an elaborate meeting with Manning that, as I reported earlier, was not going to happen at the team's Davie facility. So that is not an issue at play now. The Dolphins wanted to stay out of the limelight of media coverage, anyway.
But until we know details of the length and expanse of this pitch, we won't know exactly how serious the Dolphins are in the Manning scheme of teams vying for his services.
I will say this: At least they are in the game.

Its so obvious Manning is not interested in the Dolphins.
Posted by: Clue | March 12, 2012 at 03:10 PM
So Peyton keeps us waiting til Wednesday, Flynn signs with Seattle Tuesday, Cleveland take Tannehill in the draft - and if all that goes down we may as well sign Henne back ...
But on the bright side Ireland wil say this is what we planned all along and go and sign a Left Tackle saying that Long needs a backup ...
Posted by: Steve | March 12, 2012 at 03:11 PM
..I understand Peyton Manning first..He drives the meter. Nothing else matters. Free agency does start tommorow at 4pm..Have the Phins been in contact with anyone? I know you said the team is giving you the silent treatment..but come on. Can you drop some knowledge on what the Phins plans are if Manning goes elsewhere, or who the free agents we are high on?
I would say that if we do not sign Manning..Mario Williams becomes priority number 1. Even over Matt Flynn, or Kevin Kolb(should he become available) Spend on a pass rusher to compliment Wake. Also re-do Wakes contract before he holds out. Make a commitment to these guys and show that we are serious about building a formidble front 7
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | March 12, 2012 at 03:11 PM
My hope is Philbin tells him no, you are not going to dictate our entire offense. And btw - how about throwing a ball or two before we cut you a check for a gizillion dollars. Manning is old news, old player - enough already.
Posted by: Rick in Texas | March 12, 2012 at 03:13 PM
Manning is going to visit the Titans. Dolphins are clearly on the outside lookng in.
Posted by: Dagnell | March 12, 2012 at 03:16 PM
I still see our chances of landing Manning shrinking day by day like a shrinking violet.
Im 90% pessimistic and 20% optimistic Peyton become a Miami Dolphin. I juust hope Ross/Ireland are putting the shine on plan B. Hopefully plan B isnt Matt Flynn.
Good God Almighty this franchise is beginning to sicken me. LOL

Here's how I feel....
I think Manning should just tell Miami how he feels. If doesn't want to go to Miami, tell them now.
You might argue that he leaves all options open to raise the price, but he had 12 teams interested! It's not going to hurt his chances if he tells Miami they should just move on!! Multiple organizations are begging for him. I know he doesn't owe us anything, but I think it'd be kind of a D move to keep us thinking we have a chance until it's too late for us to go another direction.
Posted by: Ohio Dolfan | March 12, 2012 at 03:17 PM
You would think because Ireland is Baylor alum, he would make a play for RG3 nooo this a hole looking to sign a 36 tear old Qb with neck issues. Fukkin idiot

SAY SOMEONE SAY LIKE SHULA TOLD THEM TO LET PHILBIN MEET WITH MANNING CAUSE HE KNOWS THAT IRELAND AND ROSS CAN SCREW IT UP! LET'S SEE IF PHILBIN CAN BRING IT HOME!
Posted by: BLACKCEROTE | March 12, 2012 at 03:23 PM
YG, Your logic states that you have 110 percent of whatever it is, plan B will be Flynn, YG what else QB can we possibly get? Were screwed again.. Sigh

NO ON FLYNN... JUST SAY NO TO 50 MILLION
Posted by: meho | March 12, 2012 at 03:23 PM
Also there is no need for a dog and pony show. Manning needs to see who he'll be working for. Philbin is the HC and will see him everyday. Ross is meaningless, he'll only see him on sundays if at all. Ireland is a GM hermit, only comes out to see if it's spring or fall.
Posted by: Miles | March 12, 2012 at 03:23 PM
Manning going to Houstin also... I like Schaub!!
Posted by: meho | March 12, 2012 at 03:24 PM
We brought this coach in to run his offense - let this guy build his team with Flynn or whoever and forget about Manning - all he does is delay the coaches offense for two or three years.
This will end badly. Let Manning go and start thinking about who our new, YOUNG QB is going to be. The Dolphins need to sign/draft a minimum of 2 young QBs every year until they get it right. Give this coach a chance to do what he does - don't hamstring him right off the bat.

Posted by: Poizen | March 12, 2012 at 03:25 PM
bigphish,
Why should we pay $40-$50 millions for Matt Flynn when we already have a qb on the roster that may be better?
We only have $13.8 million in cap space. That would be a great misuse of it. If Moore beats Flynn out for the starting job we're screwed man.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | March 12, 2012 at 03:25 PM
Manning already knows that Denver have the most salary cap money, and in any case he prefers to have his agent deal with those matters.
Apart from being one of the best paid QBs, Manning also appears quite needy for coddling and comfort i.e. he seems to have become used to being a little bit of a pampered baby.
I'd Pass!
Posted by: ralph ortega | March 12, 2012 at 03:25 PM
So when Manning signs with Arizona and Flynn signs with Cleveland, Ross and Ireland will be 0 for 4, will some of you still be supporting him?
Posted by: Clue | March 12, 2012 at 03:25 PM
The Dolphins are so pathetic. If Peyton were a chick, the Dolphins would clearly be in the 'friend' zone which means we got no shot.
Posted by: NJ Fin Fan | March 12, 2012 at 03:26 PM
Redskins lose 36 MILLION in cap space!!!
Wow!!! Good luck signing any free agents! And with them trading all those picks, good luck drafting any young studs!!
If I was RGIII I would now tell the Redskins that I won't play for them and force them to trade the pick!! NOW THAT WOULD BE FUNNY!!

Smart move by the Manning camp. They obviously aren't interested in the Dolphins -- the guy lives 30 minutes from the team's facilities and hasn't met with them yet? There's a red flag if there ever was one.
Wisely, the Manning camp is going to massage interest to drive up the price. Wouldn't you? I think the only positive of this is that Ross and Ireland aren't involved, because I had no confidence at all that they could pull off a successful, opinion-altering pitch anyway.

Manning will be going to Houston and Kc this week also, Niners will grab him!!
Posted by: meho | March 12, 2012 at 03:27 PM
You people are nuts.
Manning would tell Miami is he wasn't interested. I cannot imgagine he has any interest in wasting his or Miami's time.
Manning also does not need the razzle dazzle, he knows what he wants, he knows what the area offers, and he wants to talk to the football people to see if they are jiving with what he is looking for.
I see this as no different than any other meeting, and if anything, Miami has a MASSIVE opportunity to change whatever perception he has about the other opportunities if they really want him.
Manning is not stupid, he is taking in all the information and it means nothing that Miami couldn't give him a Miami Sound Machine concert.

Somehow, I don't think Flynn is in the plans. If they don't land Manning, it's Matt Moore and whichever QB they draft in the 2nd round....possibly Tannehill with the first pick.
Henne is gone....he's ready to test the waters in FA. Why the hell would he want to play for the bozo Dolphin fans chanting the name of a QB that wasn't even on the roster. Good luck Chad.
Posted by: wolfman13 | March 12, 2012 at 03:27 PM
I'm with you YG - but how do we know Flynn isn't significantly better than Moore? He may be - he may not be. We know how good Moore is - he is servicable and may get better. I like him and would like to keep him. But they need to bring in some other guys too.
Posted by: Pittsburgh Jim | March 12, 2012 at 03:27 PM
It's all out for Matt Flynn now, they can't afford to not get someone in here. Also can't afford to wait on Manning to play his little game
Sign Flynn, a WR and an OL and lets move on to the draft

Armando is it possible the reason the other visits took 6 hours is because he needed to see the facilities? How many times has he actually been in Arizona or Denvers weight rooms or home locker rooms and film rooms, walked through the stadium? Because he has done that twice in Miami already. And if they even have a 3 hour interview with him the fact that he doesn't have to see the facilities may be what the other 2 to three hours were about in Den and Ariz?
Who knows,,,,,I actually prefer to go a different route but I'm now scared that we may end up with Moore and Henne.
And if Peyton is going to wait on making a decision and I were the Dolphins I would not let that stop me from pursuing Flynn.
It is completely unfair of Peyton to ask any team to wait on him beyond tomorrow at 4 pm. If that's the case I tell hiom thank you very much and good luck in the desert. We can't sit on our hands while all the free agents get grabbed up.
Signing Peyton means going in a completely different direction, we would be signing some vets with him to try and get a championship. We would have to wait for a Manning decision before they knew how much money they would have to spend and which free agents to sign because you don't know who you're putting them in with.
Complete BS if this drags out beyond tomorrow. If so I would pull my interest off the table without batting an eye. Or tell him here is our offer but we are going to have to look into Flynn in case you choose to go elsewhere, if he excepts an offer from us we obviously will pull our offer to you. This is just such a mess.

One thing is for sure - we can't wait around for Manning and then get left at the altar - for the third time!! Move on - if you get him, you get him. If he isn't on board by tomorrow at 4:00 PM - cut bait and move on as if he was never available.
Posted by: Pittsburgh Jim | March 12, 2012 at 03:30 PM
...I would sure like to know what John Elway said to Peyton Manning to lure him toward Denver. Obviously the deal is far from done...The Phins still have an opportunity to wow Manning. But seriously. You Have Pat Bowlen and J. Elway v Ross, and Ireland. It is the V arsity against the JV when it comes to credibility, or understanding of football operations. Sure our young guns may be able to pull the rug from out from under the seasoned football men. But think about it.
If you have ever been in a buisness negotiaiton situation where you have multiple suitors. There is always the outstanding, and those who are above. Almost like the first ballot hall of famers v the others. In Elway you have a guy that knows exactly where Manning is coming from. He can relate to Manning in a way that Ireland cannot.
I hope our guys come through. I hope this is not another big dissapointment for the franchise. It makes the team look like a disfunctional bunch of chuckleheads. Beyond the embarassment(which really is not that big of deal..we can get over it with good play on the field) This team, this franchise, the fans deserve to feel good about something..The FO doing their jobs and grabbing the prize they have been outspoken about aquiring..Would be huge moral.

The fact that Stephan Ross and Ireland wont be present big plus!
Posted by: Dolfdan13 | March 12, 2012 at 03:31 PM
ALoco,
Again you show your shotty comprehensional skills. I never said I didnt want Manning. I was exceptional clear on two things concerning Manning.
1. Follow a Manning signing by trading up for RG3.
2. Manning is only a "shorterm solution".
We're not getting RG3, now like I posted, our chances of getting Manning are becoming a shrinking violet.
((Buffett Of Glad I Can Help An ALoco Idiot)) LOL
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | March 12, 2012 at 03:31 PM
No Balls, The Redskins viewed as RG3 as their franchise QB and did whatever it took to land him. I can respect that but when you have all your eggs in a 36 year QB who clearly not interested in your franchise then you make yourself (Ireland and Ross) look like a fool.
Plus they gave away 2 first rounder and this year 2nd. Remember the switch from 6 to 2nd this year. This is far from mortgaging your future. Wish the Dolphins did this trade.
Posted by: Clue | March 12, 2012 at 03:32 PM
Henne will NOT be on the Dolphins roster next year. No effing way! I can't take it!
Posted by: Pittsburgh Jim | March 12, 2012 at 03:32 PM
Phins 78...
I agree....
I want Manning AS MUCH...if not more than most on here...but if he holds up the TIMELINE...than we have to thank him for his time....and move on....There was no reason to waste an extra day in DEN....if he wasn't gonna sign on the spot....
Posted by: Kris | March 12, 2012 at 03:32 PM

Posted by: Coalition To Ban Ireland And Odin. | March 12, 2012 at 03:33 PM
I was lukewarm for Manning to Miami up until this weekend. But as I watch this media feeding frenzy and Manning's cat and mouse game, I beg the Dolphins to pull out of the race and sign Flynn as soon as they are allowed. It amazes me that lousy teams like Denver and (now) Tennessee think that a 36 year old coming off four neck surgeries can get them to the Super Bowl! He only got the Colts there twice in fourteen years with James, Clark, Harrison etc. -- who do those dogs have? Please Miami -- move on from this stinking mess now!

On the other hand, I do not believe their are any FA QB's that will beat out Moore..sorry, as of now, Im chanting Moore as our starter..
