Peyton Manning to meet with Dolphins this week

The Dolphins will meet with Peyton Manning in the coming days, The Miami Herald has learned.

As I reported over the weekend, the meeting will be somewhat out of the box. It will not be at the team facility. It will possibly be at Sun Life Stadium, a source tells me.

[Update: ESPN is reporting this meeting will take place Monday night or Tuesday. ESPN, by the way, reported earlier today that the Dolphins were all but out of the chase for Manning and he would not be taking any more visits with any more teams. I credit them when they get things right or first. I'm going to tell you when they miss, too.]

The meeting will be led by Dolphins coach Joe Philbin. Philbin may include offensive coordinator Mike Sherman in the meeting, although that is not yet clear.

The meeting is expected to be almost 100 percent about football -- Xs and Os -- and Manning and the coach or coaches (if Sherman comes) getting to know each other. The extra-curricular stuff, such as a requisite pitch from the owner and promise of Super Bowl wins may not be part of this Miami pitch because, in part, Manning may be tired of hearing that he is the final piece that will take them to the Super Bowl.

I stress to you this isn't exactly how the Dolphins planned things originally. They planned a more elaborate set-up that would include owner Stephen Ross. It is now possible Ross will not be included in this meeting. This is Manning's preference, I'm told.

This much is also clear: This will be the Dolphins best hope of landing Manning. The team considers it a good opportunity, although I must say from the outside looking in, it doesn't seem as great an opportunity as the 6-plus hour meetings Manning took with the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos.

The Dolphins had planned an elaborate meeting with Manning that, as I reported earlier, was not going to happen at the team's Davie facility. So that is not an issue at play now. The Dolphins wanted to stay out of the limelight of media coverage, anyway.

But until we know details of the length and expanse of this pitch, we won't know exactly how serious the Dolphins are in the Manning scheme of teams vying for his services.

I will say this: At least they are in the game.

Texans released Eric Winston....say hello to our new RG.

No bobby, I didn't give a darn about gronk. The ONLY thing that matters in this league is QB. Don't kid yourself. We had a chance and blew it. Back in the fall when beating buffalo seemed like it mattered. It didn't.

Barkley's a joke. If he had any skills he'd have come out. Just another Henne. And even If he did, dumb and dumber would just blow it.

I think GM's on other teams just ask Ireland his opinion and do the opposite. It's a winning firnuka

Formula

If you really want Manning which I do then lets go sign Reggie Wayne and Jeff Saturday TOMORROW as soon as free agency begins. Im sure that will give us a boost in the manning sweepstakes

Sorry again, but double chinned lombardi says miami is already out of it. Its just a courtesey meeting. And as for flynn, cleve will sign him. And the dolphins are going to draft henne jr. Tannehill. Great. Many more years of torture for dolphins fans.

They will certainly help Moore! Because that's who will be playing QB for the 4-12, 2012 dolphins.

We are better off with out him. If we did sign him its for the short term goal. This is all a dog and pony show. He is just being nice and trying to save face. Go for Flynn and draft a qb.

Amsmith!!

9 out of 10 QB's that go back another year just get better!!
If Barkley sucked it would be the complete opposite he would have come out and been a top 10 pick!!

Also, I do agree with you about our coaching staff!!
However, we have "some" talent that they weren't afraid to go get!!
Marshall, Bush, Pouncey, Dansby! Vontae!!
We're not too far!!
Have some faith yo

I think this guy is taking on too much airs. If the report is true, who the hell does he think he is to exclude the Owner and the GM from that meeting? Philbin is not going to pay his bill. Even worse, how can Ross/Ireland permit to be disrespected in such a way? IMO, kick him outta here.

BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE

For Peyton Manning it's all about FOOTBALL!

He wants to know that the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator are on the same page as he is, or at least if they can work together. It will be about the X's and O's. He wants to pick Philbin's and Sherman's brains about football. He's already seen all the big hoopla sales pitch (Denver did it with his friend, Elway) and he knows about what's in Arizona now. And, he is familiar with our facilities already. The only unknown for him is the minds of our coaching staff. I hope they watched a LOT of tape on him and understand how he thinks on the field and can come to a consensus with him on Football Philosophy. That's what he's looking for. Philbin and Sherman need to show him that they can still show him something! That he isn't the person in the room with ALL of the football knowledge. Otherwise, he'll be headed to Denver or Arizona. Probably Denver.

Hopefully, our coaches CAN impress him...

all the reports have been worng, I think people are throwing out red herrings, either way 4:01 tuesday start your plan (no flynn unless cheap!)

OH YEAHH

NECK

Manning is too arrogant for his own good.

man 790 the ticket rips miami non stop

Manning wants the Owner, GM, HC, bow down to his every whim. Screw that.

NOBODY is indispensable for Life to continue in its own Way. Now, ain't it so?

it feels like the sparano -harbaugh thing. after we miss on manning they will feel bad and extend moore only to cut him during season

Manning not going to the Dolphins facility instead meeting in different location means either Manning has made up his mind and will play for fins or this is just a courtesy meeting and he does not want to play here. He took a 6 hour tour with Denver and this is a meeting away from the complex. Wow. Dolphins better start calling the Pats for Mallett cause I'm not sold on Flynn.

He won't even throw the football but will ask Ross for millions. Excuuuuuse me?

amsmith965, you show how much you don't know with every post. You really don't.

John,

Manning played a SB in Miami, knows the facility well, trained in it. There is no need to see it again. It's that simple.

slutsky, Wayne and Saturday will not sign with anyone until Manning signs. They will follow Manning not the other way around.

Remember 2 years ago at the end of the season we were promised a big time coach and a big time QB. We ended up with Sparano back and Matt Moore.

So far this year after yet again another promise. No big time coach (although i like the consolation prize) and the big time QB seems to be slip sliding away...yet again.

The Media better be right about this, otherwise they will be crucified, forevermore.

W have a good coach, but the QB is slipping away.

There is nothing wrong with the fact that Manning doesn't want to meet with the GM and the owner. Let the agent talk money. Manning wants to know what Philbin has in mind for the team and whether Philbin's vision for the team is something that is going to interest him. Philbin is the best guy for the job. He was the architect behind Green Bay's offense and Manning should have some respect for that.

Oscar you know that yesterday I thought Manning would get done. Today I don't think so. And I'm not sure if we are going to have enough cap space for Flynn. Luckily we're not Washington with 36 million cap money removed. Poor RG3 is going to be feeling pretty lonely when the Skins can't go into the free agent market because of lack of cap.

I honestly think we should forget Manning. We have a Flynn on the roster in Matt Moore. Lets draft Tannehill and another young QB. Let the 3 battle it out. We need a franchise QB not a 36YR old rental qb. Come on Ireland do the right thing for a change!!! Lets take the Manning money, get Mario Williams to compliment Wake. And concentrate on a strong draft.

peyton should just tell dolphins miami is a good place
to visit but i don't want to live there

Hopefully we'll like the consolation prize at QB as well.

It's obvious Ross and Co are trying. The knucklehead has just gotta stop making promises he can't keep.

Manning is clearly thinking about his best opportunity for another ring. After seeing his previous owner gut the team and fire the GM, he could care less what any other owner or GM has to say.

While Denver (and later Arizona) wasted all of that time and money trying to impress him with their facilities, front offices, and cities, Miami waited patiently. Peyton wants to go to a team where it's ALL ABOUT FOOTBALL!!! That's why our meeting will be about the chalkboard; the X's and O's. THAT'S how you get Manning to come play for you; show him you have a winning attitude and a good plan! He doesn't want to go out as a loser! Convince him that he's going to a winning team!

That's why he'll pick the Dolphins in the end...

And, we will all have to pay homage to Home once again for being right (or not)!

Ray, your best, most logical comment ever!

“It seems to be a foregone conclusion that the Cleveland Browns are going to go get Matt Flynn,” he said. “If that’s the case, and it seemed to be kind of confirmed by the people that I discussed it with, which are very, very in my opinion very credible sources. Unless somebody swoops in and steals that free agent away from the Browns, it appears that the Browns are going to make a strong play to go get him.

I don't see how the Dolphins are gonna swoop in with their poor reputation around the league and get Flynn anyways. Again, Ross is not going to get into bidding wars with any other team.

Just so I'm clear. Matt Flynn is gonna come in and throw 6 TD's every game? Interesting! I wonder why he wasn't selected #1 overall in the draft then.

Maybe i'm naive but you would think that Flynn would be willing to negotiate with us in order to play for Philbin and Sherman without totalally breaking us.

You would think we would give him best chance to succeed.

manning has no desire to come here right now, but philbin can change his mind with a perfect presentation. its in philbins hands now, God speed

Browns are going to drive the price way up for a 7th round draft pick. Just like folks have said, let's spend that money on Mario Williams. Moore is good enough.

I'm betting Mario Williams will be back with the Texans.

jack sparrow i wonder why alex smith went one, or leaf 2, or so on and so on. guessing game. guess brady sucks and should of never played cause he went in 6th rd

Has anyone noticed that ESPN are one shite 'news organization'? Dimwitted twits dressed-up as Wall Street bankers just wasting everybody's time with their baseless crap.

jack thats all the media, they all want to beat the other to the punch

Unless Philbin was just being coy. Saying that he prefers to build through the draft was not a ringing endorsement for his former back-up Flynn.

hopefully manning drags this for couple days so flynn can go rip some other team off

The last article I read said that Manning will meet with the Dolphins at 2pm tomorrow and Tenn later in the week.

Of course I'm sure Flynn will have a tour of his own.

no way flynn will have a tour or even be called before manning makes his dec, then maybe miami will call him, lets hope hes already signed with clev or sea

WTF, Michael, who cares about RG3, Manning or Flynn for that matter? It didn't work out, so it didn't work out; and we go on with our next best option.

Why would Flynn rush to sign with anyone - he is the last "treasure" qb left - he will be coveted by Cleveland, Seattle, potentially Arizona and/or Miami. He would be a fool to sign day one - he knows the system that will be in place in Miami so I'm pretty sure he will give them last dibs - best chance for success - the money is already fixed at the 10M level due to the scarcity of free agent qbs.

I would give Manning tomorrow and that is it - fish or cut bait - you either want the adrenaline of squaring off against Brady 2x a year or you are looking for the back door (AFC west) - then why the hell do we want him - I want someone that wants to kick the Sh** out the NE cheatriots.

griffin zona would never want him, they will stick with kolb. seattle will overpay like they always do. and i hope he signs quickly so we wont make the mistake of signing him. we missed out on griffin. so now i would just try and load up our defense as much as possible

oscar canosa, Geezzzz just a comment.....easy.

oscar is fed up also. we all are. cant disguise it oscar just let it out. we are all pissed off

All we can do is see what happens in free agency.

You are probably right, Seattle will make run at Flynn (or take Tanehill at #12).

IF.....Houston pursues Peyton, any takers for Schaub via trade? What would you give up? Not #8 overall but that might be asking price - might give my 2nd but man - he will be out for awhile with that foot - part of me thinks Tanehill could be real deal (maybe wishful thinking and that Dolphins FINALLY use first round pick on QB).

Sometimes, dusty, we are fed up from so much cowardly and subservient BS, that we have to let go our feelings. It is good that we have Internet (for some of us), now.

Sorry Mando....Not going to happen. Manning is going to be a Bronco b/c it gives him the best chance to win the division & make the playoffs right now. The truth is that Manning will not catapult the Cardinals past the Niners or the Dolphins past NE for that matter.

I realize that Steven Ross is losing money with this team & is considered a joke as an owner by some but signing Manning would NOT be a smart football decision. Sure it would sell tickets in the short term but this team is not close to being a SB team. I believe that signing a 36 year old QB who just missed an entire season & had 3 or 4 neck surgeries for over $20 Million a year would be a mistake if you want to build a consistent, winning organization like the Steelers or the Patriots.

Either we sign Flynn based on what Philbin knows & has seen first hand or we draft Tannenhill based on what Sherman knows & has seen first hand.

Would love to have Peyton for 2-3-4 with 1-2 young backups and Matt for at least 1 more.
We have to play this out and let the coaches make the final call. Think Mr. Ross will back Coach Joe. If not Peyton, then Flynn or Tannehill. If Coach Joe and OC do not know the young QBs who does? Relax and let it play out.
