Report: Peyton Manning to be released (warm up the helicopter!)

Peyton Manning is going to be released by the Indianapolis Colts and a press conference to announce the parting of ways is expected by Wednesday, ESPN is reporting.

Next stop Miami!

Um, I mean, next stop Miami?

Once Manning is free, the Dolphins expect to involve themselves in the chase for the future Hall of Fame quarterback immediately. Manning is able to sign right away. He doesn't have to wait until the start of free agency March. 13.

How likely the Dolphins are to land him is unknown and opinions vary based on who is talking. But suffice to say the Dolphins are "very confident" they have a good chance to land Manning assuming he is healthy, according to one club source.

Of course, one almost expects that to be the feeling. The Dolphins were confident they would land Jeff Fisher. The Dolphins were confident they would be in the playoffs the past couple of seasons. Confidence is good. But confidences guarantees nothing.

I'm told the team has had unofficial and off-the-record conversations with the "Manning camp" the past three months, although my source would not say if that included contact with Manning or his agent. [CORRECTION: Got a call from my source who says the conversations were the past three weeks, not months.] I'm also told the team would deny any contacts whatsoever because it could be deemed to violate the NFL tampering policy.

I do not know if these touch-base contacts assure the Dolphins of anything. Manning is expected to be a popular commodity in free agency.

Kansas City, Arizona, Denver, Washington and possibly the Jets are among some of the teams expected to show interest in Manning, along with Miami.

Because of the interest, I would not expect a bargain basement sale for Manning's services. Although his representatives have leaked word that Manning would accept an incentive laden contract that does not include high guaranteed money, there is word among NFL people that can change very quickly.

The truth is Manning has been throwing better of late and that, along with the expected high demand, could drive up his price. And that includes some guaranteed money, although not as much if he was younger and not dogged by his recent neck/nerve injury history.

Manning, 36 in two weeks, would typically be worth around $20-23 million per year. One could expect that Manning signs a deal that through guarantees and incentives (if earned) lands in the vicinity of that mark.

For all Peytons greatness, and he was great, he only won the prize once against todays teams. So, late in his career after multiple surgeries on a brand new team, we may be fooling ourselves to think he will waltz down here and slay the dragon in the 2 or 3 years he has left.

Myron, remember this is not Sparano's era anymore. Yes, they might take cast-offs from GB, which I wouldn't mind.

Peyton only won once on a far better team than we are likely to have any time soon. Think about it.

As gm, you need to already know how to solve tomorrow's problems today. Because if you wait untyil tomorrow to figure out tomorrow's problems. Your already a day too late.

This is Jeff Ireland folks!

Peyton Manning Come on down!

!!!!!!

Peyton now really may only serve to prolong our pain. I don't want to groom some prayer QB, I'm sick of that. Let's get the guy we really want instead of another project player with only the potential to be useless.

Sign Peyton bc rg3 will b in cleveland. We don't have the picks to give up to st. louis that the browns do and after rg3 the qb pool falls off like a rock. We have the pieces in place on offense that a good qb could do some damage with let alone Peyton manning if he can get to even 85-90% he's still better than any qb Miami has ever had not named marino. Face reality and get manning!

YES TO MANNING!!!

Wwe can replace evryone one of them brokse a ss free agent n iggahs in the first round yo.
Word is bond

If you dont know tomorrow's forcast. There's always a high probability you'll get caught in rain without an umbrella.

Get RG3 now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets see how the next two months play out. We may still be another owner and FO away from turning things around.

We don't want some "potential" QB. We need a proven winner, he who can throw the ball over LB's heads into the receiver.

This will be Irelands fifth draft and we are likely still to be without our QB of the future. That seemed to be their #1 task above and beyond everything else when they arrived. Who'd have ever believed five years down the shoot we'd still be looking for a franchise QB? Shameful.

When I was a kid, a long time ago, if you failed the test, guess what? You failed. Nowadays you get endless make up tests. I'm tired of giving Ireland make up tests. He's failed.

Myron,

Its because Ireland's from the "cowboy clan". He'ld rather find his next "Tony Romo". The on and off Dallas supposed qb who cant even win a playoff game.

Looks like this is all we have to look forward to in Miami. The next "Tony Romo".

Tony Romo will be hardpressed to ever lead Dallas to playoff victory let alone a sb championship.

As long as Ireland's gm we will always be looking for the next "Tony Romo".

Yesterday

I understand the enthusiasm for Peyton, but getting Peyton means we burn yet another year without a QB of the future. When does it end? These fans that say pick someone to groom behind him don't consider the simple fact there is nobody to pick worth grooming.

It is NOT Ireland's 5th Draft, Myron; before it was Parcell's. It's Irelands 2nd draft and last year's wasn't that bad. I am liking you less and less, Myron; you seem like that type of Fan that want the Dolphins to lose, in any way, shape or form. Like black bottoms.

Boycott Ireland...

Myron @1214PM,

I agree with you 100%. Especially when looking at bthe future of the nfl qb'ing picture:

Rogers
Eli Manning
Big Ben
Stafford
Luck
Rivers
Newton
RG3

Now, whom are we going to groom that will be as good or better than these 7 qb's over the next 7yrs? Ireland seems to be looking for the next "Tony Romo". But even Romo would be at the very bottom of this list at best. Even after first adding a couple more names. Like Barkley for starters.

Lots of Hate at night here. Unless you talk to them about drugs, sex, prostitutes, etc.

Yo I learned this upstate:
We don't leave the first round til we gove EVERY player we want!
Word is Bond

Black bottoms? Never heard that before.

Hey, I have no way to know who drafted who. Jeff has been the GM so I stick it on him. If you want to wear the badge you gotta take the heat!

I want them to win. That is why I am sick and tired of watching them flounder away every opportunity to finally get a franchise QB. Franchise QB's don't need to be groomed. They come in and play.

Braford Stafford Ryan Flacco came in an played well. QB's enter the league better trained than ever before. If they need to be groomed, they ain't good enough!

YG,
Where is Schaub, Ryan & Brady?

You seem very pessimistic, Myron. Do you have marital problems?

We all know as fans that our team just cant seem to get where they really need to be. But many fans are too "tunnel-visioned" to accurately understand why.

They dont understand that some of the very things they wish for contributes more to our delinquincy of longterm losing. Just to win 1-3 more games in a single season in the shorterm. This team is mired in an ever lasting endless loop of longterm unproductivity.

I'll cheer Peyton if he comes, but the more I think about it, the more it seems detrimental to our future.

Oscar, no marital problems, not pessimistic. Just realistic. Maybe you are the type of fan that never gets tired of saying 'oh well maybe next year'. You have to admit this team has stalled far too long in resolving the QB situation once and for all. PM is a band aid, not a long term solution.

Why do I get the feeling that many posters here are the same People? GN.

Moore is less,

Shuab will be in the tier of qb's too good to be bad and too bad to be amongst the eaque qb's in the league.

Matt Ryan still cant beat franchise qb's. So his future looks like a very good qb who may always be on the outside looking in at the other great young talent.

Brady? Within 3yrs he'll have the same fate as peyton Manning in 2012. Mallet wont sit forever and Brady isnt getting any younger.

On one had the fans want a QB of the future, but then they don't want to pay up for it. Well, guess what...unless you finish in the bottom 3, there is no way to get a franchise QB without paying up for one.

I am surprised at how many of you still have your favorite later round QB you believe will blossom into something special. It's ok to try that. But if that fails time and again, maybe its time to consider the more tried and true approach of drafting one high?

Well I've said my piece. I'll be anxiously awaiting to hear about PM's workout and how he is really throwing the ball.

Anyone calling Peyton manning a band aid is an idiot (not hard to see who that is). He will play for at least three years, that is three years since Marino we have an actual qb. Unbelievable that any fan would be against this. He threw for 33 tds before his injury, which is double what we have had from any qb basically in the last five years. So SHUTUP, and let's have a chance at superbowl rings for the first time in twenty years or so.

inimounts is the idiot here. he doesn't even know if peyton can even throw the ball. let him prove he is game ready before we assume he is going to take a mediocre team to the super bowl.

Dear Mr. Ireland,

I recently broke my neck twice and had some vertebrae in my spine fused. May I try out for the QB position?

Thanks.

I am absolutely out of my mind in disarray, I'm about to go mad of anger. I feel so f%$"#%ing impotent. If I could I would demand Ross for moral harm and psychological damage.

He is an idealistic short sighted ambitious moron and Jeff Ireland an a55ki55er being the case that they end up hiring a crippled guy my age just to give the appearance of doing something.

RGIII is the guy and if not we will see how we fu$#%ing finish the 2012 season with Manning in the IRL and Moore again leading the team to a 6-10 campaing, good enough to AGAIN miss the opportunity for a possible franchise QB, while Cleveland or Washington challenge their divisional rivals for the next 15 years and pick up two more SB rings.

Fk Uc Cu Kf you Ross!!

OFF-Sign Manning Wayne Grubbs DEF-Sign Nelson Re-Sign-Langford Mitchell Allen Draft Trade back 1st pick DE Ellis 2A Tannehill 2B Fleener

I say "NO!!!" to a Band-Aid fix. I would rather take the risk of giving up two first rounders and a second, than "one hit, you're in a wheel chair-Manning." Manning is going to come in and change what Philbin had in mind as far as Offense for our team. If you'd like, bring him in and kick the tires and have our doctors examine him and give him a work out. I want a QB that will be here for OTA's that are starting next month. No lock-out this year, so no excuses for a slow start this year!

Win, Lose, or tie... Dolphin till' I Die!!!!

Heres a list of superbowl Q/b's that didnt get drafted in the top 3 , and most of them not even in the first round >>> Big Ben,Dan marino, Tom Brady,Steve mcnair, Kurt warner,Phil Sims, Jim kelly,Joe Montana, Bart Star,Drew Brees,Ken Stabler,Brett Favre,Warren Moon,Steve Young,Aaron Rodgers,Fran Tarkenton,Johnny Unitas,Joe Theismann,Trent Dilfer,Doug Flutie...ECT ECT ECT!!!!

AND HERES A LIST OF BUST DRAFTED IN THE TOP 3 OR ONES THAT HAVEN'T PANNED OUT>>>Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell,Todd Blackledge,Joey Harrington,Tim Couch,Vince Young,Alex Smith,Rick Mirer,Mike Phipps,Jack Thompson,Matt Leinart,David Klingler,Todd Marinovich,Akili Smith,Heath Shuler,Andre Ware,Art Schlichter ..ECT ECT ECT !!!!

SO YOUR ARGUMENT HOLDS NO WEIGHT! PLEASE CHECK YOUR FACTS BEFORE COMMENTING

Well, if we get Manning, keep Moore, and beef up the other areas of need... I do seem to remember that there are a couple of top tier QBs that chose to remain in college for their senior year... and I thought they were better than LUCK... RG3 is a completely sifferent style of player and the comparisons would be like apples and oranges...

But if we go with the "short term" with Manning (and who knows how many more years he has in him), and have Moore and the new kid study under him... the only ohter guy I would want showing my QBs the "tricks of the trade" would be Danny Boy...

Ross, without a dought is an idiot. I do like Manning, but not in a Dolphin uni. Ross, think about this, 4 neck surgerys. 20 mill a yr eats up what percentage of the cap? Super Mario would be a better sign. come on man,,,,

The way things are going this is what I expect: Peyton weighs all options...in the meantime, Flynn signs with Cleveland, Washington trades up to #2, Houston trades Schaub to Seattle and Peyton signs with Houston. Matt Moore here we go.

PLEASE SHUT THE F&%$ UP ABOUT RG III.........
all i hear is peyton is one hit away from death.........rg III is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Peyton has dominated nfl defenses for years rg iii dominated the big 12 for one year. Come on guys get real screw rg III, sign peyton sign wayne sign saturday move pouncey to rt use our draft on defensive playmakers to get us extra posessions.........we will be superbowl bound

His announcement of retirement has had shocked a lot of fans.
