Reports: Redskins trade for rights to RG3

The Washington Redskins had to know they were practically eliminated from the Peyton Manning derby earlier this evening. They'll be OK.

They just completed a blockbuster trade for the No. 2 overall pick in the April draft.

They're now in position to draft Heisman winner Robert Griffin III.

FoxSports.com first and ESPN afterwards reported the Redskins are sending the St. Louis Rams at least two first-round picks plus future considerations for the right to own the No. 2 pick. ESPN is actually saying three first-round selections -- the team's firsts this year, in 2013 and 2014 -- are involved in the exchange as well as this year's No. 2 pick.

The trade cannot become official until the new league year opens March. 13.

So what impact does this have locally?

On national radio with Profootball.com Friday I told Mike Florio the Dolphins weren't going to make a strong enough play for the second overall pick because the asking price was simply too high and the Dolphins 1. didn't wish to use their chips to move that high and 2. didn't want to send that many assets to Jeff FIsher, the man who declined to become their coach earlier this year and picked the Rams instead. The Dolphins, however, did inquire about the possibility of getting into this deal -- to no avail.

Given the price of the trade, the Dolphins weren't able to get in play for RG3.

But this absolutely takes another QB option off the table.

The Dolphins are fully invested in the Peyton Manning chase but the need to succeed there now grows for Miami because options are fading.

If the Dolphins add Manning, they'll consider themselves successful and set for the near future. If they fail to convince Manning to come to South Florida, the only apparent option to addressing the void for a franchise quarterback is free agent Matt Flynn or selecting a lesser-rated quarterback in the draft -- assuming there's conviction that would bring an elite player.

Wow. Now how desperate do we get?

unreal, screw u ireland

The Redskins give up two number 1's and and this years number 2. Thats crazy! They better hope Griffen doesn't go Shuler on them!

Only idiots would think Ireland should give this kind of bounty up. Tannehill and Weeden are options c and d after manning a and Flynn b. If Miami missed on all of them, then open your traps.

tannehill and weeden, loooooooooool manning or bust now. flynn not worth it

it's 3 number 1's and a number 2. that is crazy.

dusty,

Come on man, shake it off. Three firsts and a second for RGIII. Forget it. That's not how how you build a championship team. There's not a team out there that successful does things that way.

i am forgetting it now craig cause i have to. but that trade will def be worth it for skins. franchise qbs are so hard to find. ok now im done and moved on. manning or bust, do not want anyone else left

Good luck to the 'Skins. Considering they've had NO success under Synder, I think they just buried themselves. I like RGIII a lot but that's not how you build a champion. Good luck with that one. dusty, maybe you should jump on the "Skins bandwagon while you can.

shanahan officially sealed his fate in washington. rgIII is not cam newton. newton is a beast who can stand in the pocket and see over the defense making throws under pressure. rgIII is a poor man's michael vick. how many playoff games has vick won again?

austin do u know or is that a question? how is griffin vick? makes zero sense

makes perfect sense. both rely on their mobility, and both seek to throw on the move outside the pocket. he won't stand up under the punishment.

Well dusty the reality is we may not get Manning either. So there has to be a plan C, D and E. One player doesn't win a championship, I don't care how good he is. Cam Newton couldn't do it by himself and RGIII won't be able to either. 'Skins need to improve their OL, and some WRs and improve pass rush. good luck doing that missing 4 key pieces.....

thats 100 percent false. griffin is a pocket passer, looks to throw before ever thinking of running. vick looks to run first, pass second. and vick is 53-37 in the nfl, pretty good. 2-4 in playoffs since u didnt know

ok craig so who do u want at qb if no manning

dusty, i am glad you are not the gm for the dolphins. anyway, i am glad you know how to google for stats. nice to know vick has a losing record in the playoffs.

craig its called free agency and skins have a ton of cap room. bet they sign one of every pos u just mentioned.

and its missing 3 pieces, they got one of them back in griffin

and im glad u asked the question. hey lets compare 2 guys because they are black.

dusty,

I want Manning too and I'll be disappointed if we din't get him, so I think Flynn is next in line. Depends on the price. If it's crazy, I say forget it. If Manning ends up in Arizona then I want Kolb at a bargain price. I would still draft a kid like Tanehill or Weeden. Can't have enough QBs on the team. Failing all that we're going to have to look at guys like Campbell, Orton or dare I say it Henne. But truth be told, as long as we draft one of the young guys for the future we'll be fine.

and im also glad u arent the gm, we would have orton as our qb

wow craig so back to zero and drafting garbage qbs in the 2nd rd.

This will push Tannehill even higher and the possibility he could go 4th in the draft will now be talked about in the mocks.

dusty,

It's THREE firsts and second. That's what they are going to give up. Great that they got RGIII but they are going to miss those pieces.

we disagree alot craig but i like your passion. we are always here hoping miami finds a way to win finally.

Osweiler is the best option-AND he'll be available at round 4-5' so we can get both Manning for now and him for the future. Theres no way that either him or Moore couldn't benefit from sitting behind THE most prepared professional in the game today for 1 or 2 years. So we'll be covered for the "now" and the future. Osweiler reminds me of Rothlisberger, without the baggage. Plus, we'll get to use picks 1=3 on players of need.

texas no way in hell any team would ever take tannehill 4th. yes craig they get one pick for 4, so missing 3 pieces

Definately too much to give up. Philbin himself said that his philosophy was to build through the draft. Kinda hard to do when you give away all of your premium picks for the next 2 years. I am hoping that Philbin had a say in the choice to not give away more picks this year. Manning or Flynn....we'll see. The way I see it, especially since I just paid and renewed my season tix; is I am happy with Matt Moore too for another year. We have been worse lately.

and only missing a 2nd rounder this year, so with rg3 and snyder throwing cash around they may have best offseason of anyone

ARMANDO SPEAKS OF MANNING AS IF HE DOESN'T KNOW OF HIS NECK PROBLEMS ...............AMAZING ....

dusty, is this a blog about racial politics or football. if your sensibilities are offended, i suggest you read another blog. players with similar skill sets are compared. if they happen to be black, so be it.

dusty,

You got it man....we're only defeated if we LET it defeat us. These guys will figure it out one way or the other. Let's hope it's Manning but if not we'll be OK. Puff schedule this year, new coach....things are looking up.

everyone will hold their breath if we sign manning aloco no doubt, but best option left now. and to say your fine with matt moore for another season is insane, im tired of being 7-9

wrong austin, the guy griffin has been most compared to is elway. nobody has compared him to vick, not similiar at all

For a team that is close to winning it all and has everything in place but the QB, that would have been a wise move. BUT IMO Washington doesn't have the greatest WR's in the game.

With that said we will probably see them being huge players in FA for offense weapons.

Austin - by your logic regarding RGIII being too small, so Drew Brees is too small? He does have a Super Bowl WIN... RGIII is faster than Cam; check their times in the 40.....you want Matt Moore or RGIII......Matt Moore or Matt Flynn.....Matt Moore or Manning.......Vince Young?????
Manning is in Denver, meeting is now in 11th hour! Denver has Manning locked up; Elway is related to Manning

But dusty, they will still be giving up FOUR pieces. Yes it's a net of THREE but there will be FOUR picks missing. I hope we;ve put that to rest.

yeah we know they will texas

manning left denver, in fact armando said he was told denver was now eliminated?

jets giving sanchez ext is hilarious, i love it, they are a mess

Craig M, u are wrong. How many Dolphin 1st round picks has made the probowl the last 10 years other than Jake Long?

true jb i mean who wouldnt deal odrick, davis, pouncey for griffin

With RGIII there is EVERY reason to think he'll be a successful QB in the NFL. I'm not doubting that. But you're going to give up four high draft picks for this guy? Not a chance! I expect the Redskins will be players for guys like Vincent Jackson and Brandon Lyoyd and maybe even Randy Moss. To me this smacks of how the Redskins have been trying to put teams together for YEARS. It's not fantasy football it's REAL football. The 'Skins have gotten it wrong time after time after time....I have every reason to believe that paying a King's ransom for this player and then signing players in FA won't work either. Synder has NO clue!

Ben Volin of the PB Post says Denver has 50 mil cap space and Miami has 19mil.

I don't know how much Peyton is asking but that is a huge difference.

I see a Tannehill or Cousins in our future.

dusty, if i am not mistaken, the publicity surrounding griffin in recent days concerns the 4.3 forty he ran at the combine (remember, he chose not to throw). now, i might be mistaken, but i don't recall elway being this fast. in any case, all sorts of comparisons are made. but having seen him play in person on multiple occasions, i feel comfortable comparing him to vick.

Henne aint coming back.he will be a jet or a ram as neither have a backup qb.if miami loses out on manning im good with moore and weeden or cousins.maybe even cambell miami can just.keep adding pieces in the draft and the occasional dip in free agency.

JB,

It's not about making Pro Bowls, it's about making the playoffs. Let's see how the next 4-5 years play out.

Only the Redskins would offer this kind of deal, this is why they have been a 500 team the last 18 years

go skins!!

I am lighting candles and praying the Ross spends all of his $$$ for Manning. I agree that Moore has been serviceable, but I hope we can trust new staff to pick or pass on Flynn based on past working with Flynn. Anyone hear anything about Reggie Wayne talking about Miami with Manning??

Peter King says this is the biggest trade for a draft choice in NFL history. Lot of pressure on the kids from the get go. Let's see how it works out.

Hopefully, by Monday we'll no longer be worried about (or discussing RGIII) since it's a moot point now. But, the stock of Quarterbacks has just gone up! Including Manning! Even Tannehill's probably giddy with the news!

We should go hard after Dallas Clark and Wayne to entice Manning more.

As a 30 year Dolfan in DC, if Synder is doing it then it is the wrong thing to do. Everything from crazy roster moves to clear cutting a National Park that obscured his view...he is even loathed in DC. Money can't buy sense. It makes no sense to get into a bidding war with a crazy man.

Austin and Craig M,

Its 2 firsts. Yes I know the reports say 3 first's

BUT...

Included in that 3 is this years Redskins first. But the Redskins get the rams first. So its a swap.

Or if you prefer math formula's

3 first round picks to the Rams
1 first round pick to the Redskins

3 - 1 = 2

Would you trade Pouncy, Odrick, Davis, and Thomas for RG3...I say yes...

I think that having Defensive players suspended for games due to performance drugs, and other things, probably didn't sit well with Peyton. I still think that Miami has the most to offer him.

dbmfins,

The Rams have THREE picks in the top 40 this year, two firsts next year and two firsts in 2014. So at the end of the day it's THREE firsts and a second for RGIII. Rams are set up nicely for the next few years.

That price was way too high. I wouldn't trade 3 first rounders for Andrew Luck either. If the Skins miss on this trade it's going to crush them for the coming decade. Good luck to them though- I applaud their balls.

Manning will be in Miami... There is a reason that he is visiting us last. He won't play in Denver. Come on, would have to play in the elements of Mile High 8 games a year. Fat chance. Arizona doesn't have any cap space. They are way over it. In fact, the only way they could free up space would be by releasing players that would protect and help Manning. Players like Fitzgerald and Levi Brown. Or gutting their defense.

Manning is a smart guy. He's priming the negotiations to go his way by visiting in Miami last. He's no slouch.

As far as the Redskins trade... Glad it wasn't us. RG3 may come as advertised, but at the price they paid, how to you keep a supporting cast around him? Good linemen come in the first round. Also, as RG3's price inflates the next 4 years, it's gonna leave less for free agency. Talk about selling the farm. They might have a prize cow, but no grass to feed the rest of the herd.
