Reports: Redskins trade for rights to RG3

The Washington Redskins had to know they were practically eliminated from the Peyton Manning derby earlier this evening. They'll be OK.

They just completed a blockbuster trade for the No. 2 overall pick in the April draft.

They're now in position to draft Heisman winner Robert Griffin III.

FoxSports.com first and ESPN afterwards reported the Redskins are sending the St. Louis Rams at least two first-round picks plus future considerations for the right to own the No. 2 pick. ESPN is actually saying three first-round selections -- the team's firsts this year, in 2013 and 2014 -- are involved in the exchange as well as this year's No. 2 pick.

The trade cannot become official until the new league year opens March. 13.

So what impact does this have locally?

On national radio with Profootball.com Friday I told Mike Florio the Dolphins weren't going to make a strong enough play for the second overall pick because the asking price was simply too high and the Dolphins 1. didn't wish to use their chips to move that high and 2. didn't want to send that many assets to Jeff FIsher, the man who declined to become their coach earlier this year and picked the Rams instead. The Dolphins, however, did inquire about the possibility of getting into this deal -- to no avail.

Given the price of the trade, the Dolphins weren't able to get in play for RG3.

But this absolutely takes another QB option off the table.

The Dolphins are fully invested in the Peyton Manning chase but the need to succeed there now grows for Miami because options are fading.

If the Dolphins add Manning, they'll consider themselves successful and set for the near future. If they fail to convince Manning to come to South Florida, the only apparent option to addressing the void for a franchise quarterback is free agent Matt Flynn or selecting a lesser-rated quarterback in the draft -- assuming there's conviction that would bring an elite player.

P78,
If it were profitable to have low salary overhead + low staffing at stadium + low budget team then it would be profitable to do business that way.
No one in Phins organization is trying to win SB this year.

Clearly states Armandos opinion.

No one from the Miami Dolphins told Armando (before this mornings show which happens to be when he made the statement) that they would not trade with Fisher because they are mad at him. No one said it, Armando didn't say he was told this, you are wrong.

You are mad for no reason Tiger Sam.

FLH,

It could be very much possible Matt Moore's the starting qb in 2012. It's isnt my worst nightmare but it again would show the total incompetence of the braintrust running this asylum!

Matt Moore & Caleb Hanie will compete for starting job.

FLH,
Peyton to Denver most likely
Every thoing else correct.
God Bless You.

I HOPE EVERYONE IS HAPPY NOW. WE ARE SCREWED ONCE AGAIN. TO SAY WE WOULD BE MORTGAGING THE FUTURE IF WE MOVED UP TO GET RG3 WAS AN IGNORANT STATEMENT. WE HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING WITH THE LAST COUPLE OF SECOND AND THIRD ROUND PICKS ANYWAY. TAKE A LOOK: Matt Roth, Channing Crowder, Paul Solai, Kendal Langford, Pat Whie, Pat Turner, Chad Henne. NONE WERE GAME CHANGERS. MOST AREN'T EVEN WITH THE TEAM ANYMORE.

In about 5-8yrs its very possible we could be watching a Indianapolis Colts vs Washington Redskins sb. RG3 vs Andrew Luck.

BTW (FLH I know you post in here under at least 6 different personas; at least 6.)

I still say trade down and load up, shore up other needs. This is not our year to upgrade the QB position. If available, Weeden, regardless of his age, is a leader. Moore, with an improved OLine, will be a much better QB for the immediate future.

Lets see, entering his 3rd season as hc and overseer of Redskins football operations, Shanahan has traded "The House" for RG3(Franchise qb).

Year 5 of whats left of the "Parcellians"(Ireland) we "MIGHT" get what's left of a "fr4anchise qb".

Anyone getting the picture here?

I doubt Denver gets Manning - crappy weather, open stadium, thin air. Team has the basics in place.

Cards: Dome, Fitzgerald. Good weather, mostly. Boring place to live.

Miami: Great weather, a few pieces short of a good team. Fun place to live. (except all that media attention)

Winner: Cards but not by much. Just a feeling.

Best bet upon losing out on Peyton (if we do), IMO, is Weeden. Moore can handle things in a WC offense as Weeden gets some time under his belt during the year. I like a healthy Manning and what he could do for us in attracting top flite free agents (IF Ireland goes for them - after Manning breaks the bank here). But, Philbin is a WC offense guy. If you want Manning, can Philbin adjust? I would hope so, but who knows? Moore actually fits a WC offense pretty well from what I've seen and what little I know about that offense. Weeden is the most ready to go QB in the draft. His age is a factor but 8 to ten years isn't bad, if he gets the job done. I am of the opinion that Flynn may not be the guy. If they miss on Manning and go all in on Flynn, then we know Philibin thinks he's the guy and I'll be behind that. Hopefully he's not a Cassel, etc.

Trade down, go pass rush/RT first, Weeden second. Pick up a good safety in FA. We need a TE too, and this draft is not a good one for TEs. That would have been two years ago when Ireland et al. failed miserably and Belichek got two premier TEs. Ugh.

I wish any of us had the answer. I get the feeling Peyton isn't it but if we land him I'll be cautiously excited. If we don't, I'll probably be a bit relieved (until he starts wining somewhere else, of course) and we can look toward the future.

Lastly, Matt Moore is not elite but he's better than decent and he has the nuts and the enthusiasm to get us somewhere if they give him more weapons. More weapons. More weapons... PLEASE! TE, WR. (oh, and a RT and RG would be nice). Ummm and a pass rusher and a FS and a corner who can catch. Thanks, Santa.

..I think all of us Phin fans saying Wahington ovrpaid for the rights to Griffen are suffering from a case of hidden resentment..It is way to early to say that the trade was a bad one for the Skins..If griffen turns out to be anything like his supporters say...The Skins hit the jackpot. You can take the draft picks all day..Give me a franchise quarterback, and you will be picking late in the first round anyway..

Now if we look back at this trade in 4 years and Griffen is garbage..Well obviously we can say the Skins blew it..IMO they did what they had to do. Kudos to them.

How impressed with Denver is Manning now that while he was out there today that 3 Bronco players all got suspended by the NFL for the first 6 games next year due to doping?????????

Who is this MANNNING???
he has to be better than lUCAS EYYY?

This waiting stuff is lame..the longer it drags out the least likely we are to get anyone decent at QB... We better not loose manning to any of those teams... It's a bunch of gabble-de-gookk

The skins were smart for getting RG3 rights...he's gonna be a good one. The skins are really irreverent at the moment..and don't have a great support group for the QB..any team should have traded the house though...it will just take them a while...but they still have FA to fill gaps

It might not be such a bad move for the skins. They won't exactly suck this year and the draft pick could be somewhere around 15. The following year if RG3 is that good (which everyone on here raves about him) the skins could have another pick around 18 to 20. After that if RG3 really rocks the league their pick could be a 25 value. So if you look at this it is 3 firsts and they get one back and possibly giving away low first round picks. It isn't what smart football people always do but it might work for them.
Yeah right. It is like playing roulette. 23 black. Keep picking it, we are going to hit it one day.

Things we know:

1) Luck to Indy
2) RGIII to Washington
3) Washington just staked their future with RGIII
4) NY Jets believe all of a sudden believe Sanchez is their franchise QB...LOL!
5) St. Louis will select Blackman at #6 in the draft if he is still available.

Things we don't know:

1) Where will Manning land? Miami, AZ, or Denver?
2) Where will Flynn sign?
3) If Miami misses on Manning and Flynn, will they draft Tannehill or will he even be available at 8th.
4) Will Miami sign Flynn AND draft Tannehill if they miss out on Manning?

In conclusion, the Jets are a joke, Washington better damn well hope RGIII is worth that price, the Rams are going to be a VERY good team, Denver is probably just being used for leverage with Manning as I think it will come down to Miami and Arizona, Flynn might not be better than Tannehill. If we miss out on Manning, then let Cleveland sign Flynn and lets get our Tannehill. The kid has a great skill set at the QB position. I'm still hoping for Manning, but we can't put all of our eggs in one basket at this point. I am glad Miami didn't risk everything in the future to possibly swing and miss with RGIII. There are scouts out there that don't believe he will be a very successful NFL QB. Washington paid a king's ransom. If St. Louis gets Blackman at #6, then they got all of those high picks, along with the guy they wanted this season. Insane! So far, advantage St. Louis!

I think the fact that Manning is meeting with the Dolphins last is actually a good thing. I believe in his heart he thinks Miami is the best fit for him and he is just doing his diligence in Denver and Arizona. Personally, I don't think Denver has a shot. It's a two team race with Arizona and Miami. Arizona has a terrible offensive line, while Miami is a player or two from being VERY solid up front. Protection will be everything to Manning as it will extend his playing career. I also still think he would rather play in the AFC. Marshall Faulk, who is friends with Payton, said there is no chance he would play in the NFC. Very interesting. I mean, his WR's (Garcon and Wayne) are clamoring for him to sign with Miami and hoping to play with him again. This is something that he stated he would love to do as well. We'll see how this plays out. We should know by Tuesday unless Arizona doesn't let him leave the state without signing a contract. Unfortunately, with their facility and stand up organization in place, that is a possibility. Hopefully he fulfills his promise to meet with the Dolphins and they get their shot at selling him on joining the team. It's going to be a WILD weekend. Again, I truly believe this is a 2 team race between Miami and Arizona. There is a slight chance KC or Seattle can get involved, but I just don't see it at this point. I think Manning wants to get this done ASAP, as do the other teams involved. It's going to be so strange seeing #18 in a different uniform where ever he goes, that's for sure!!!!

One last note.... How pissed off is Elway that he lost 3 players to a drug suspension on the day when he is trying to sell Payton Manning to join the organization.

That had to be stinging his ass! I love it!

Tebow should walk out the door! Elway is a jerk!

A mock draft over on Bleacher's Report has Miami taking Nick Perry, DE, USC with the #8 pick. That's assuming we get Manning or Flynn at QB.

Hmm....interesting...

I think Peyton's wife and kids had a lot to say about where he should go on his fact finding mission. All three are fairly laid-back kinda places; Denver, Arizona, & Miami. That's what cancelled out the Jets and the Redskins. Not as "family friendly"! I'm sure that his family was, and is, a major consideration in where he'll finish out his career as well as a place where he can win and go out with class.

Hopefully, Miami will win out!

M2M! Go Fins!

All I know is this. If we lose getting Manning, is would a complete DISASTER!!! This front office and fan base would devistated!!

Ross would then have to take a long look in the mirror!!

Anyone else notice how good FA's go to good teams and lousy FA's go to lousy teams?
Peyton will not be coming here. Nor will Vincent Jackson nor DeSean Jackson.
Caleb Hanie is more like it.

Tracy474,
Please remind what the 'family friendly' characteristics of Miami are.
It it the grafitti?
The noise?
The trash?
The 8th Street Latinas?
The sweaty immigrants carrying paint buckets of mis-matched tools on line to buy 40's and lottery tickets?
The crack?

Y'all need to be positive.
No wonder no one wants to come here.

Thank God the Quarterblack is off the table. Quite a price to pay for a 1-year college wonder. I guess the 'skins will have a decent team on Madden 'cause that's all Griffin will be good for.

Take the pocket passer whenever possible and let's get Manning!

THE DENTIST

THE NECK

THE CELLAR

THE GARAGE MANAGER...........................

Everyone says that washington gave up to much. All depends on how RG3 turns out. Here is our problem we only have Manning left he he goes somewhere else we are done. Becasue tell me one QB after Manning that you really think is better that Moore. This sucks to be a fan of a team that consistantly screws up. I think our starting QB next year will be Moore

WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE RG3 OR GET MORE OF;;;;;;

ODRICK
GATES
D.THOMAS
SMITH..................... ??????

This is a dangerous time for Mr. Ross. After 2 past disappointments (in landing Harbaugh and Fisher), not getting Peyton would be a HUGE letdown to the fanbase. Also, apparently Seattle and Cleveland are big on Flynn, so there will be lots of competition to land one of these guys. If we're the last team standing, this may be an ominous start to Philbin's tenure. Maybe he'll be happy not to get Manning (so he can fully implement HIS system), but if he doesn't get efficient QB play, this could be a repeat of the Sparano years.

Be nervous Dolphins fans. We know this team has an uncanny knack to getting things all wrong.

GETTING MANNING WITH HIS NECK ISSUES TO WALK THE SIDELINE BACK AND FORTH NEXT SEASON IS LIKE INVITING YOUR BEST GIRLFRIEND FOR A SUBWAY SUB ,,,,,,

Got to admit I'm starting to feel a bit like the bridesmaid after the Harbaugh and Fischer deals. And if you believe the local media here in Phoenix it's going to happen again. I don't know if it's in the best interest of the Dolphins franchise long term but I'm officially now, especially after the RG3 news, all in on Manning to Miami. The guy is my second favorite QB all time after Marino, and I'm not a youngster who doesn't remember the 70s and 80s.

Anything short of that will be another failure. Tannehill, Flynn, Kolb, Tebow? Please...

The deciding factor for Manning picking Miami is Joe Philbin. When Manning meets with Miami, Philbin needs to be in the room and they need to meet. They need to talk about the offense and what Philbin wants to accomplish. That is what will give Miami the greatest chance of getting Manning. The money will be there. Philbin will be the biggest influence on the decision.

Exactly Chris, you can't go from Manning to Flynn. It's not even guaranteed Flynn can beat out Moore for the starting position. Wouldn't that be embarrassing (would Philbin even allow Flynn to lose that contest)?

But I'm with you, not feeling too confident today. Looks like Denver or Arizona now have the inside track to landing Manning. I hope he's just toying with them, and wanted to be in Miami the whole time.

Ross is going to tell Manning what he wants more than anything is for Miami to start winning championships again. He is going to tell Manning he is going to do what it takes to do that and he believes Manning can help them get there. However, Philbin needs to be able to step in to the conversation and discuss the team with Manning. If he can show Manning the team is built to win now with him as the quarterback it could seal the deal.

Ireland Kiss me kISS ME!!! I prefer to be kissed when Im getting F**ked!!! Thanks for ruining our beloved team A-hole!!!AHHAGAHAGAGAGAGAGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just go back to Parcells house and tell him "Mission completed" as you continue to F-us over!!!! ENOUGH Mr. Ross!!! ENOUGH!!!! Someone save our beloved team!!!!. Da horror, da horror...........

And it now appears both Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are available. Colts south in Miami anyone? I realize these guys are aging, but so are we as fans. Desperate times sometimes call for desperate measures.

But I'm with you, not feeling too confident today. Looks like Denver or Arizona now have the inside track to landing Manning. I hope he's just toying with them, and wanted to be in Miami the whole time.

With Elway in Denver and Manning having a relationship with Elway it was only proper for him to, at least, meet with Elway and see what he has to offer in Denver. He did not come away with a signed contract so Miami still has a shot.
As with Denver, Manning needs to go to Arizona because he knows Wisenhunt and, out of respect for him, he will meet with the Cardinals and see what they have to offer.

I feel that Manning wants the right combination of money and a team he feels he has the best possibility of winning another championship with. He wants to be able to pocket some more money before he retires but one last shot at a championship is probably his biggest driving force behind where he will end up. The team that does the best job of convincing him that they will give him that best opportunity is the one he will sign with.
I feel Miami gives him the best opportunity to do so.

What do you think of Osweiller? I looked at some video's of him granted me is a project but he could develop........C'com Mando we're desperate!! ;)

Don't let anyone try and convince you that Manning would be interested in playing in a weak division because it gives him the greatest chance of winning the division and making it to the playoffs.
Manning is a compeitior, first and foremost. He isn't going to shy away from competition; he thrives on it. He wants to play against the best and being in the AFC gives him the best chance to do so. If he lands in Miami he gets to go head to head with Tom Brady twice a year for the next 3 to 4 years. Tell me he wouldn't be attracted to that.

Mike, living in the Phoenix area I watched a lot of Brock Osweiller last year and frankly he wasn't even the best QB on the field a lot of the time. Maybe he'll be a project down the road but the guy is RAW. Hell, I liked Andrew Walter a lot better coming out of ASU and he fizzled.

Lou, Denver went to the divisional round of the Playoffs with TIM TEBOW. How does Miami (6-10) give Manning a better shot at a Championship? They are in a much easier division, we're starting over with a new Coaching staff, new systems. I think that's a fan's perspective, and not based in reality. If Tim Tebow can get a team to the Playoffs, not sure how Manning doesn't think he can take them to the SB.

manning won't be comfortable with ireland or ross. philbin is credible but lacks any real authority. i'm not sure he even has much say in who the fins sign. by his recent statements,he defers to ireland in acqisitions only saying he prefers developing players.

Manning wants to win a SB, that's all. He doesn't care about the competition, he doesn't care about the money. He wants to be known and the best QB of his time. Brady has 3 SB wins, his brother has 2, that's what Manning wants (another SB title).

DC...... THE BEST THING FOR MANNING IS TO RETIRE WITH DIGNITY......NOT TO BE FORCED TO RETIRE WHEN HE GOES DOWN WITH A HIT .........

I WOULD NOT HAVE GIVEN 3 NUMBER ONES AND A 2 FOR ANYBODY THAT IS UNPROVEN AND PROBABLY ANYBODY AT ALL, THIS SHOULD HELP THE RAMS,IT LOOKS LIKE OUR CHANCES OF UPGRADING THE QB MAY BE FADING,I LIKE MOORE AND IF MANNING MAKES UP HIS MIND BEFORE FA HITS AND IT IS NOT US THEN, WE STILL MAY HAVE A SHOT AT FLYNN

All you dumb fu$s are going to be crying when manning signs with arizona, and clev. Signs flynn. And when wash. Is in the playoffs and the dumbphins are in the same position again next year. Weeden sucks, tannehill sucks, osweiler sucks. Maybe they can get barkley or jones with the #1 pick.

Dear Mr. Salguero

I think Peyton Manning will end up on the Dolphins for 2 reasons.

1 - I think Peyton being familiar with the Miami area and a meeting with coach Philbin will have a big impact.

2 - Peyton Manning's work with the United Way.... "http://www.hulu.com/watch/1603/saturday-night-live-snl-digital-short-united-way"...

Peyton Manning can help bring the Dolphins back to prominence and help all those under priviledged kids get the guidence they so desperatly need.

Soiled :)

What's being forgotten is that was the price the Skins had to pay (which was alot)....the Fins price would have been steeper given their draft position.

For DC...and the others who believe we in the "fisher fiasco"....i say...you guys are BRAIN WASHED....you have a tendency to see something in print...and automMAGICALLY believe it MUST be true....your ability to have independent thought...or critical thinking has been severlt diminished....in short.....START FILITERING YOUR WATER...allthe FLUORIDE is killing your brain cells......

Here is a fact for you guys...it is ARMANDO's OPINION that Fisher turned us down.....It is a FACT that byou have never read anywhere in your PRECIOUS PRINT that Ross even offered Fisher the FINS job.....

Ross Interviewed Fisher....you with me...have you ever been to a job interview......

Ross and Fisher had differnt ideas on how the structure of the FO should be run....thats a pretty big deal....would you agree....

Ross and Fisher could not come to an CONSENSUS.....and because of that....ROSS had no reason to offer Fisher the job.....can we agree on that.....

Lord.....its like watching a ZOMBIE movies sometimes.....people just wandering around....aimlessly....

RECAP:

there is no 'fisher fiasco"...because Fisher was not offered the job....

Harbaugh....well that is a differnt story....bash Ross and Ireland for trying all you want......

I @ least know this much.....If I went to a party with Ross...i KNOW he has the balls to TRY and talk to the prettiest girl in the room.....he wouldn't be a wall flower like i believe many in here to be.....

and I respect that....

Anyway....

Until we sign Manning...everything else is moot....

:-)

No more talk about Fisher please. Thank God he's not here!

Black players don't make great QB'S, make the list for yourself.

Miami needs to sign Flynn, Brandon Lloyd, Dallas Clark and Cortland Finnegan !! Let Manning go to Denver!!

As much as I am not an Ireland fan, you really have to scratch your head and start crying if you are a Jets fan.

(1) The Jets hire Tony Sparano to be their O.C.! Tony has never been an O.C. and his Dolphins teams have had very boring offenses (minus the wildcat).

(2) They trade up for Sanchez. Sanchez ends up sucking. And then they EXTEND Sanchez when there is no need to! This would be the equivalent of resigning Henne now if you were the Dolphins. Are you KIDDING?!

(3) The Jets have a head coach Rex Ryan who is nothing but hot air and is classless.

(4) The Jets now want to run the ball, but Shonn Green has for the most part been a bust.

As bleak as things have looked for the Dolphins, I really thing the Jets fans have to look at the Jets as once again being completely dysfunctional. Is was only amount of time before they started showing their true colors. The Jets are heading back to the cellar of the division!

Of course Jet fans are too stupid to see their team will soon once again be the laughing stock of the NFL. After all, they are completely classless just like there head coach. Enjoy Sanchez and Sparano Jet fans!!

Depending on how far they pulled their pants down he Redskins might not "be okay"! They have to be one of the worst-run franchises.

Marino drafted late in first round. Fifth qb taken. Just a reminder...

And for God's Sake if Manning goes to Denver let's please not start the trade for Tebow crap. I'd rather stick with Moore.

Why you People no believe? Ahh, you no wan pain if no sign. Believe--->will be given.
