Riley Reiff to Dolphins at No. 8? Are you kidding?

Riley Reiff is a good football player, OK? I have nothing against the offensive tackle from the University of Iowa. I have watched a couple of games in which he has played and he's always performed well enough.

And that, coupled with his size and ability and smarts, is a reason he's considered a top of the first round type of talent. But to the Dolphins? Are you kidding me?

God, I hope not.

Seems Reiff to the Dolphins is a popular stream of thought among NFL draft analysts. ESPN's Mel Kiper penciled Reiff to Miami in his first and only (so far) mock draft. NFL Network talent analyst Bucky Brooks similarly has Reiff going to the Dolphins with the eighth overall selection. And NFL Network reporter Steve Wyche has the Dolphins picking Reiff as well.

I get it.

Reiff is an offensive tackle. He's perfect for the Dolphins to fill the void at right tackle -- even though he played left tackle at Iowa. And, of course, his connections to Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz makes him a natural for the Dolphins because Miami coaches Joe Philbin and Mike Sherman know and respect Ferentz and value his players.

But ...

Riley Reiff, for all his attributes and gifts and the logic of filling an obvious void, would be a terrible pick for the Dolphins at No. 8. Why?

There is simply not a great deal of value of picking a right tackle in the top 10 selections of the draft. No, there's no rule that says this is a fact. No, there's no philosophy or statistic that has proven this to be the case. But work with me for a second and let me state my case ...

{UPDATE: Since posting this, I got a call from an NFL scout who reads the blog and he told me he has Reiff as a guard. And he said he's not alone in the thinking. So there's that.]

The draft is not only picking the right players, but also getting them in the right round to maximize their value. And in the top 10 a team with so many needs as Miami has should not be investing on a player that neither will score points, nor prevent points from being scored. The offensive right tackle will never, not even on his best day, throw a TD pass, or intercept a pass, or sack the quarterback, strip him of the ball and run it in for a TD. He will never make a game-changing play.

And that game-changer is the only kind of player that brings value to a team in the top 10 picks.

Said another way, I want my team to pick a quarterback, a cornerback, a wide receiver, a 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE. I want playmakers drafted in the top 10.

I do not want grunts.

Grunts are wonderful additions later.

Because grunts don't lead a team to the playoffs or the Super Bowl. Playmakers lead teams to the playoffs or the Super Bowl.

That doesn't mean I am against drafting offensive linemen later in the first round or anytime after that. And some special offensive linemen deserve top 10 consideration depending on a team's relative needs and whether the player is a left tackle or center.

But a right tackle? Or a guard?

In the top 10?

Quick, who was Green Bay's right tackle this year while they went 15-1? Quick, who was the last right tackle to be named NFL MVP or even his own team's MVP?

Yeah, thought so.

A top 10 pick is a premium, premium draft choice. It should be used to select premium, premium NFL playmakers.

And right tackles, no matter how gifted, do not qualify. Reiff, by the way, is No. 77 in the video below.

Bro, you are preaching to the choir with this one. If we draft another O lineman the entire fan base will go ballistic and 20% of will likely die of a heart attack. This organization CANNOT draft an O lineman in the first round again.

Hello? Where is everybody?

Typical Dolphins draft

DC....I responded to you in the last blog....last page of the blog....

I can't seem to cut and past...so head over there to see what it was....

Another 1st round pick on the offensive line would be an abomination! Look at any successful team (NE, NYG, GB...etc) and almost all of their OLineman are mid round picks. What's the catalyst here? They all have strong QB's! Get the QB or another skill position but STOP WASTING FIRST ROUND PICKS ON THE O-LINE!!!!!

Who takes mock drafts seriously? Especially beyond the top five picks, who cares about their guesswork.

ok...so trade our number 1 this year and number 1 next year plus brandon marshall for the number 2 pick...I think that this is fair and really a great deal..st. louis gets there wide receiver and an extra number 1..heck..let's through in vonte Davis and that is that!

one more thing - it is a quarterback league..you can build around a great quarterback..you cannot build around a great offensive right guard....

He's not my choice either. I'd love to see a package put together for RGIII. Failing that I'd take a guy like Ingram. Reiff wouldn't be a terrible choice at 8 as a plan D or # and the reason I say that is beause I think at some point he could be a really good LT. So maybe he would play RT for a season and then if we were to eventually package Long for a QB, I think Reiff could be a good replacement. So understanding, I'm not advocating the pick....however, as a plan to ultimately get us a QB I don't think it would be horrible. Fills a need for now and ultimately perhaps help us get that QB down the road.....but I'm much more onside with getting a pass rusher. Bigger need in MO.

i disagree completley. Packers went 15-1 because Rodgers was kept on his feet by so called 'grunts'. How would Rogers or Brady have done with a turnstile at RT.
I think Riley is a good pick. No point in adding QBs if they are just gonna get flattended. No point of drafting WR's if they arent gonna get the ball because the QB is being run out of bounds.

Come one! draft from the inside out!

Great post Mando! Couldn't agree more!

Elite left tackles are chosen in the top ten. Reiff played left tackle in college but he's not considered an elite left tackle. Beyond that, his value at right tackle is much less than what it would be at left tackle.

Anythings possible with MORON Ireland. Boycott the Fins until Ireland is fired!

If we select Reiff with the 8th pick, I will personally lead a mob down to the Davie headquarters with torches.

Mr Boycott

What are you boycotting? You are contributing to the nfl by posting here, and you will be by watching the games too.

Professor Lou,

Sorry man, I've got to disagree with you. I've read that some people consider him an elite LT and I've seen him go as high as third in some mock drafts. Take that for what you will. Some of the other comments that I've read is that he's an even better tackle than the guy Balauga taken by the Packers. I didn't see him a lot in College but he looks good to me on tape. Easily a top ten pick.

Miami already has a starting right tackle who is more than capable of playing the position in Lydon Murtha. Drafting a tackle in the first would be a waste of a pick no matter what Kiper or Brooks thinks. These guys don't know the teams. There was a discussion about this last year when all of the "talking heads" were saying who should take who.
At #8 Miami would be better served to take one of the top pass rushing prospects like Ingram and get value for the pick. Tannehill isn't good value at #8 and it would be a travesty if they traded down to the last 3rd of the first round to get better value when picking him. When you have talent in the top ten like you do this year you don't pass it up for a lesser talent. That is how the elite teams build champions.

But I do agree that he doesn't have the same value as a RT.

I sure hope not! I'd like to see melvin ingram, or courtney upshaw if we stay at 8. Possibly even janoris jenkins (might be a reach) but he has a world of talent. I have been watching the combine and those are the players that have stood out to me. Cordy Glenn looked very good as well, he is a 350lb monster that could possibly play right tackle. Killed all the workouts and we might be able to get him early second round. I also havent heard any talk about needing a defensive tackle!!!! Isnt paul soliai gone? That is another void that needs to be filled. I'm just praying we dont use the number 8 pick on reiff....good lord.

The Dolphins are a joke.

All you guys want is RGIII he'll be a burn out in 2-3 years & we'll have to get another QB & rebuild again!!! Get the OT, get Flynn here & if that goes south we have Moore & Devlin to finish the season & if we have to, keep ALL our picks & draft a QB NEXT YEAR!!!

If you believe Long has trade value, then it's not a horrible pick. If you don't believe he has trade value and you think he's beat up, then it's not a great pick.

With the new salary structure for draft picks Reiff makes more sense than Long did in the old days -when Long hogged a huge chunk of the salary budget.

Ray Finkle, while it is true, of course, that one needs a good O Line--afterall our terrible O line last year is what got poor Henne knocked out when he was going to have a pro bowl year--the point is that O linemen are interchangeable and it's a total crapshoot, so you get then in the middle rounds like Green Bay and NE do.

I've heard a few people say he was a top ten and I also heard a few who disagreed with that and pointed out the flaws in his game. Those who were talking "elite" seemed to be caught up in the early hype surrounding him.
If I were going OL in the first I would take DeCastro or Martin before Reiff.

The Dolphins ( if they are smart enough ) should trade down and draft a Defensive end with the 1st. pick,a Right tackle with their 2nd. pick and a QB Named Collins with their 3rd. pick (to development)

Well here's a post from Mando that most of the bloggers should all agree upon.

Until 1:00 AM when the crazies come out and start arguing about nothing anyway.

take the RG and sign Flynn. RGIII is too much of a reach.

Good qbs get rid of the ball fast and make their lineman look better! I agree with you Mando an impact playmaker is need with a top 10 pick. Especially since the dolphins have already drafted a lineman 1 overall and 15 overall. Right tackles can be picked up in round 2 or 3. Does anyone even know off the top of their head who the best right tackle in teh league is?? At number 8 you take the best available playmaker regardless of position!!!!

If you're saying, if Long has trade value, you trade him and take Reiff to replace him I'm definitely not on board with that. I don't often agree with Mayock but he has said that Reiff is more of a right tackle than he is a left tackle.
There is no way I trade Jake Long. Before I trade him I fire the strength and conditioning coach.

Incidentally, I've read a few places that some people think Henne after Manning will be the most sought after QB out there and people figure he'll get between $4-5 million a year. 'Who cares', you say. Fair enough. But it could prove people on here wrong who said he'll NEVER get another deal from another team or the chance to compete for a starting job. 'Who cares', you say. OK. I'm just saying, what do other people from around the league see that was as fans don't see. Don't read my comments wrong...by no way am I saying bring him back....that boat has sailed. I'm just saying, sometimes when you're too close to the action, a guy can look worse than he actually is.
Anyways, time's up on this guy....gonna be fun to see whether we and Ireland were right on this guy. To be honest, I wish him well....as long as it's not for the Jets.

Lou Mayock also said Long was more of a right tackle than left tackle.

I can't think of the names of any of NE's OLs but they're certainly the strength of the team. Imagine Brady without all that time in the pocket!

RG3 is the only logical pick..we must trade down for this RARE athlete QB. Those draft analists are dumb..why would MIA take Reiff, who will he protect back there..our golden franchise QB that we don't have right now?? Bone-headed pick if it's made at this point. Mando you are correct, we don't have the luxury right now to select Reiff in round 1. Maybe if we already had an elite QB..but we all know that's not the case currently... RG3 or BUST guys!!!

You don't draft a right tackle top ten. Thanks for the info, but I believe most here already knew that.

Having said that, I take offense to all that say Offensive Tackles(All lineman really) don't make any game changing plays. That's just a very narrow and simpleton point of view.

How many times did a lineman make a key block and spring Chris Johnson for long TD run?

How many times did a Guard pick up a stunt allowing Farve to toss another record setting TD?

How many times did a interior line obliterate a defensive front to allow a key first down late in the game to keep the drive alive?

I wouldn't draft a Right tackle top ten, but I'm not going to go all "Simpleton Poindexter" about it either.

It all starts "Up Front" Mando and yes, those Grunts DO make game changing plays. Sheesh!

Craig M, Kris, DC, others..........

Lets say we sign Flynn or Manning before the draft. Who would you get a #8 then?

Just curious

I was originally ok with the Reiff pick @ #8...but after watching Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College at the Combine...I want him!

He is without doubt going to be the next Zach Thomas.

Will he touch the ball?
You bet, he'll be stripping the ball from RB's and intercepting it from QB's.

Draft Kuechly and we'll start moving the needle on the turnover ratio from negative to positive.

As always I respect your opinion. We disagree on Reiff. I like him. I'd take him ahead of the other two you mention, although I like Martin too. I'm not advocating trading Long THIS year, however, if Reiff shows he has the chops for the NFL, I'd have no problem trading Long NEXT year in a package for a guy like Barkley. I've seen enough of Reiff to believe he'd be a good LT in the NFL. It's Ok to disagree on this fact.

Kris, saw your post. Can't say it relieved me fully, but it was a good start. If we get the players I hope we get this year, hopefully it won't be problem regardless of what the Jets do.

As to the question of the day, I agree Kris, sounded like Mando took a page out of your book (quick, who was..., that's a Kris technique).

But of COURSE I agree with Mando. I'm the friggin' guy that doesn't stop talking about the QB. A 1st-rd RT (after 2 1st-rd oline picks in 4 years) would probably be the worst of the worst options Miami could take (lest they get everyone else in FA).

New HC, new Coaching staff, how about a new draft strategy? Let's worry about playmakers first, then round it out with the grunts.

Craig M....

We don't need a "package for RG3....we will be paying Manning....and keeping our picks...

If we draft a right tackle with our 8th overall pick in Round 1 then Ireland needs to be fired!! No team picks a right tackle in the top 10!!!

RG3 will not burn out in two years...he is clearly mike vick 2.0..he's bigger, faster, can throw just as good of not better.. Look I'm not dissing Vicky's skills..but if both were in prime RG3 beats him out for sure.

Top offensive lines that preform at a high level directly contribute to the success of your rushing and passing game- leading to 3rd downs, sustained drives, and points.

I don't care how we get them, so long as we get the players we need.

Very likely, QB and DE will be settled in FA, leaving the draft to address the glaring hole on the right side of the line first, followed by TE, DB, in later rounds.

If Ingram does not fall to #8, and we already have our QB, I say grab Reiff.

I alread told you that Henne will be a great QB in this league and you idiots will eat crow. The dude has played his entire career under Sparano yet has several 350 yard games and a 420 yard game under his belt. He was the only Miami Dolphin who showed up ready to play at game 1 this year, he was poised for a breakout year, and our incompetent O line got him knocked out, literally. He was a *gamer* the first 4 games this year; the only Dolphin who came to play

Of course you will see him starting, NEXT YEAR, and he will put up 3800 32/12 if he stays healthy.

Do you ever see NE, GB, Andy other dominate team out there take a darn OT with a top 10 pick...never! Because it has no value in the top 10. Whomever doesn't really agree or get this concept must be content with how Miami has picked and played the last 15 years... It's been really bad round here unless you are blind, deaf, and well you know the rest...

no odin, guys like you try to sound "sophisticated" by saying O linemen are important, because you heard that once on ESPN. Yes, the game is won at the line of scrimmage, but hte point is that it's a total crapshoot and 6th rounders often end up as good as Jake Long, so O linemen are not WORTH FIRST ROUND draft picks.

Mustache ....ummm I'm not even gonna comment in that garbage that just came out of your mouth... Henne, Henne?? Please child, go to hennes home page and spew thy nonsense..because only his mom believes what you just said...

If we sign Flynn or Manning, there is NO doubt in my mind that we take a pass rusher at 8. The guy I think is the best fit for this team is Ingram but I also like Upshaw and Coples, to a lesser extent. With the retirement of Taylor, the potential holdout of Wake and the lack of development from Misi, pass rush is the most overlooked need on this team. You want to beat Brady and the Pats, you'd better get in his face a LOT more.

Pass rusher (Blackmon will be long gone by then, I'm not even entertaining he'll be around).

Now, if you said Manning, I'd say take Tannehill if he's there (to develop).

Flynn/Moore (2 similar guys in terms of potential if you ask me, but they're both relatively young, so that's why I don't know about grabbing a QB there. Think you need to give Flynn a year to prove himself. If he can't beat Moore for the starting position though, now that's a problem, I don't know why he's on the team at that point. Would make that decision QUESTIONABLE).

Armando is 100% right. Only Kiper and the geniuses at finheaven would think that taking a RT at #8 is smart. The poster who said the Packers won because the O-line kept A Rodgers upright is hilarious but typical of this O-line first last and always mentality that creeps around every draft season. Wake up people. Rodgers is the reason the Pack won, not his o-line. good teams don't devote 4 or 5 first round picks to their 0-line. you should get a playmaker at #8 not a grunt.

I'll take Manning/Moore over Sanchez/Henne any day of the week!

I also respect your opinion. Yes, we don't agree on Reiff. I don't see him as a top ten even at LT and he certainly wouldn't have the value at #8 at RT.
Miami has needs at a number of different positions but right tackle isn't one of them. Colombo is a done deal. Murtha can play the position just fine and the need is then gone. If they want to take a couple of o-linemen in the 3rd or 4th I'm fine with that.
#8 belongs to the elite pass rusher whether it be Ingram, Coples or Perry. I prefer Ingram but getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks is as much of a need as anything else.

Level, you are spot on bro..OL can be dug up in FA and elsewhere..not in top 10 picks. Top 10 are for instant playmakers ONLY, impact guys, big time players that either score or crush QB's every third rush

Ingram has short arms for a DE, why do some of you like him. Couples is the sar superior D lineman in the draft.

Ingram does have short arms and small hands...I guess he won't be paying for any meals because his arms can't reach into his pockets even...

Lou....does it not make sense to draft an 'elite' OL to match up against an 'elite' pass rusher?

You say #8 belongs to an elite pass rusher who you hope will run past the Ol who was drafted in the 5th round by the Pats so he can sack Brady.

Problem is, Belichick does not draft OL in the 5th round because he knows how important they are to protect his QB.

I'm OK with this guy Reif @ the #8 spot....IF Manning is on the roster....

I f he isn't....the I would like to see a playmaker like Blackmon....

The rumor about Coples is that he is a QUITTER...and that is a bad rap to have....just having that label is a makes me not want him....
