Riley Reiff to Dolphins at No. 8? Are you kidding?

Riley Reiff is a good football player, OK? I have nothing against the offensive tackle from the University of Iowa. I have watched a couple of games in which he has played and he's always performed well enough.

And that, coupled with his size and ability and smarts, is a reason he's considered a top of the first round type of talent. But to the Dolphins? Are you kidding me?

God, I hope not.

Seems Reiff to the Dolphins is a popular stream of thought among NFL draft analysts. ESPN's Mel Kiper penciled Reiff to Miami in his first and only (so far) mock draft. NFL Network talent analyst Bucky Brooks similarly has Reiff going to the Dolphins with the eighth overall selection. And NFL Network reporter Steve Wyche has the Dolphins picking Reiff as well.

I get it.

Reiff is an offensive tackle. He's perfect for the Dolphins to fill the void at right tackle -- even though he played left tackle at Iowa. And, of course, his connections to Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz makes him a natural for the Dolphins because Miami coaches Joe Philbin and Mike Sherman know and respect Ferentz and value his players.

But ...

Riley Reiff, for all his attributes and gifts and the logic of filling an obvious void, would be a terrible pick for the Dolphins at No. 8. Why?

Value.

There is simply not a great deal of value of picking a right tackle in the top 10 selections of the draft. No, there's no rule that says this is a fact. No, there's no philosophy or statistic that has proven this to be the case. But work with me for a second and let me state my case ...

{UPDATE: Since posting this, I got a call from an NFL scout who reads the blog and he told me he has Reiff as a guard. And he said he's not alone in the thinking. So there's that.]

The draft is not only picking the right players, but also getting them in the right round to maximize their value. And in the top 10 a team with so many needs as Miami has should not be investing on a player that neither will score points, nor prevent points from being scored. The offensive right tackle will never, not even on his best day, throw a TD pass, or intercept a pass, or sack the quarterback, strip him of the ball and run it in for a TD. He will never make a game-changing play.

And that game-changer is the only kind of player that brings value to a team in the top 10 picks.

Said another way, I want my team to pick a quarterback, a cornerback, a wide receiver, a 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE. I want playmakers drafted in the top 10.

I do not want grunts.

Grunts are wonderful additions later.

Why?

Because grunts don't lead a team to the playoffs or the Super Bowl. Playmakers lead teams to the playoffs or the Super Bowl.

That doesn't mean I am against drafting offensive linemen later in the first round or anytime after that. And some special offensive linemen deserve top 10 consideration depending on a team's relative needs and whether the player is a left tackle or center.

But a right tackle? Or a guard?

In the top 10?

Quick, who was Green Bay's right tackle this year while they went 15-1? Quick, who was the last right tackle to be named NFL MVP or even his own team's MVP?

Yeah, thought so.

A top 10 pick is a premium, premium draft choice. It should be used to select premium, premium NFL playmakers.

And right tackles, no matter how gifted, do not qualify. Reiff, by the way, is No. 77 in the video below.

or big ben, etc. and russel must of been good since he played at lsu.

hi my name is peyton manning and I say either you draft that Tackle or i am heading elswhere.

We had the opportunity to watch Weeden vs Luck in the Game with Stanford. You could see clearly the superiority of Luck in every QBking department, except for the final result. So, based on that Game, if Luck is #1, then Weeden is a late 2nd or 3rd rounder.

hi my name is peyton manning and I say I'm not joining your trainwreck team no matter who you draft

I'm not saying RG3 sucks ... If he was as good as Cam was when he played in college he would have came closer to winning a title... Cam played at Auburn and didn't have a gr8 a team as RG3 had Look what happened to Auburn this year without Cam Newton

to make my point again ... IM NOT SAYIN' RG3 SUCKS !!! HE JUST ISN'T WORTH THE ASKING PRICE!

Ireland put together the highest paid OL in football. The result? 6-10

We could have had Dalton and been set. Ireland blew it.

I think we are putting the cart before the horse. FA's should be considered first as they can change the whole complexion of the Draft. What if we cannot get any FA QB signed. Do we go for RG3? Tannehill? What if we sign Mario Williams? Then, no need for pass rusher, etc.

@dusty bottoms ... you just made my point! Pitt. didnt morgage their future to get Big ben did they?

People here wanna be right at the cost of objectivity. I will go prepare my Picadillo now.

@dusty bottoms ... and russel was a good player ... but when he came into money he threw it all away on drugs and pills... he could have been gr8 ... what a waste of a talent he was taking downers and playing in the NFL doesn't work.

If the Rams trade their pick to the Browns or Skins, and not us cause we refused to pay the king's ransom they want for the no 2, I think it would be sweet vindication if we traded with the Vikings and took Blackmon at 3. The Rams would miss out on a very good weapon for Bradford. Most if not all the mocks I've seen so far have the Rams taking Blackmon, and I just read that the Rams GM said their priority is to get Bradford some explosive weapons. I know this is the time of misinformation being slung around the newswire but I do feel that Blackmon is thier main target, just a feeling I have. But the bottom line is I would love to stick it to the Rams.

You dont have to trade up to get Blackmon ..he isn't going in the top 10 if we want blackmon we can get him at 8 ... he has no speed and is short , he just dropped out of the top 10 at the combine. if someone picks blackmon before pick 8 they are stupid .. the raiders wouldn't even do that .. he isn't fast enough. to many gr8 platers in this draft for him to go in the top 8.

and how many Mock drafts have been right after the first 2 picks ? NONE IS THE ANSWER!

I don't know why Home chose to fake me @ 5:44......but if he feels like me agreeing with him gives credence to his post.....then more power to him....

He will find out soon enough that my concurrence and 4 dollars will get you a gallon of gas....

and another point is you can believe what GM's and coachs are saying .. they are playing poker with each other. no ones gonna say what they really want to do they are trying to create leverage so teams will trade with them and get more draft picks ... believe me with the new CBA you want as many draft picks as you can get...

Michael.....I saw your post.....and I see what you were trying to say...

The only thing I took objection with....is when you said "they keep their QB upright".....clearly that is not the case...but I do understand the point you are trying to make.....

Mel Kiper said the Dolphins better draft Matt Ryan if they want to be a perrenial playoff contender.

@Steve ... and look were that got the falcons? NOWHERE ! Thats why Mel Kiper is not a scout!

Have they released the Wonderlic scores yet?

So, we were never near the Pats but i've now watched the Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets,Detroit Lions,Tampa Bay Bucks and San Fran 49ers all pass us by.

Jeff, the Falcons are in the playoffs EVERY year. Get a clue. LOL

@steve... Only one team is the winner. all the other teams are the same .. no such thing as being passed by unless you win the RING! didnt we beat the jets? didnt we beat the Lions? aren't those teams in the same spot as us? searchin for a superbowl ring?
they haven't passed us by!

Ross should hire Kiper or Mayock to do the draft for them.

Jeff, seek help.

Mando, the problem is that both Ireland and Ross are complete and total idiots. There is no chance they will do the right thing. No point in getting your hopes up.

I don't necessarily think they don't WANT to win I just think they haven't got a clue about how to win. We're done until they are gone

@tony nathan ... Maybe you need to seek it cause you have nothing to add but cut downs!

Negotiations with Brees are hitting some snags. But folks, now is not the time to take Brees. Our offense is nowhere near what he has had, and he won't look as good for us. The time has passed on him. He is probably at the end of his prime right now.

Say no to Brees.

Jeff Row, the only reason the Rams trade with the Browns or Skins is because they have lower draft picks than we do.

Browns 4th pick, 21st pick, 37th pick
Washington 6th pick, 38th pick, 70th pick
Miami 8th pick, 40th, 72nd.

If you were the Ram's GM, who who would you want to trade with. The Browns and their picks, Washington, or Miami.

Was I the only guy who stopped Reiff highlights because it was boring. Oline = Yawn

I dont think any team trades with the Rams unless they lower their asking price. RG3 isn't worth that much ... and with the new CBA draft picks are worth more now than ever. and if you look at the gr8 teams in the nfl they trade back and get more picks ! they very rarely trade up.

Kris I didn't say that someone else did. My only point is that someone of the best teams in the NFL still try to improve their Oline continually by drafting oline men high in the draft. The result of how the line performs after their drafted is another debate that I'm not trying to talk about.

It's not only the Players in the Draft but how they fit the Team's philosophy(I and Armando(I hope) learned this last year)) when Ireland kept drafting players nobody knew about. It worked out. Clay, Thomas(yes, he's going to work out), Jimmy Wilson, Gates out of only 6 picks.

What I'm saying is that if there's a trade for RG3, and it's for draft choices. Browns and Skins win everything because they have lower draft choices that the Phins, and the Browns have much better choice than either the Phins or Skins.

This year, Ireland has more direction, as he knows what kind of Team Philbin wants.(Sparano was(is) hard to decipher).

@Michael ... your right . i just dont think he is worth the asking price.draft picks are gonna be worth so much more now with the new CBA.

You yankoffs don't want to pay to play. You want some prize FA QB to land in your lap for minimum wage, or you want a stellar QB to fall all the way down to us in the draft.

If you want quality, you have to pay up for it. Haven't you learned that by now?

Rincon, the morons in the Dolphin front office are novices. They havent learned anything.

i mean could these idiots have found a worse coaching staff?

Oscar are you in on the team private conversations or are you making stuff up?

Cheapo Ross wont pay for good players.

That's just common sense, MJ. I finished my picadillo(very simple to make).

oscar it sounds like homer NONsense.

I feel bad for any right tackle who may have read this column.

We are all expecting somebody to fall from the sky and lead us to the SB this year. We have an almost solid Team, but it just doesn't work out that way. We have gaps that might not be possible to fill this year and we have an almost completely new Coaching staff. I hope this year but more likely next year, we'll compete with the Best.

The Dolphions have many needs and need to use their draft picks wisely. THAT is how you build a team......OK--ENOUGH BS. While this is my usual perspective, I think the Phins need to do EVERYTHING they can (without throwing away absolutely everything) to try for RGIII. Nobody knows anything about any of these palyers, except how pretty they look in College/combine. Never guarantees a similar transition to NFL. This is a time the Phins can't afford to let a PROSPECT (AS THEY ALL ARE, Mr. LEAF) like this get away from them. Manning is not the answer. Risk/Reward makes this a NEEDED EFFORT---PPLLEEAASSEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Analysts like Kiper and Brooks are picking Reiff to Miiami based on Ireland's dumb conservative picks from past drafts netting zero in the form of playmakers. If the Manning thing fails for whichever reason, they need to intelligently trade up for either RG3 or the best playmaker period, whether that will be DE, WR, or OLB.

Miami Dolphins will be the only Team with 3 1st round picks on the O line and still not make the playoffs. We are insane! We might as well get Manning because Tannehill sucks. No one is saying "lets trade up for Tannehill". RG3 hypes up his team as Tebow does. Only difference is, RG can throw every route in the play book. Tannehill is just as dumb as Weeden!

Ireland's wasted a fortune on the OL. IDIOT!

tiredfinfan, good post

Is Irelands mommy a hooka? LOL!!!!!!!!!!

Will Jeff ask RG3 if his mom is a prostitute?

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff already asked Peyton if his momma's a hooka?

In my opinion, Tannehill transitions better into the NFL than RG3.

Tannehill? He is not worth more than fifth round pick.

Rams could be in for a big surprise if the two teams that are expected to trade for Griffin decide to fill their QB needs thru free agency. I'm assuming that they'd prefer to use their draft picks to fill their other needs.

1)Manning decides to go to Arizona or retires
2)Flynn goes to the Browns/Holgrem a West Coast guy
3)Surprise - Brees/Henne/or other QB goes to the Redskins

If this happens, the Rams won't be in any position to make any major demand for picks/players. Fins could trade without giving up a king's ransom or decide to stay put.

Rams could be forced to use the pick on Kalil or Blackmon. If no trade happens, Griffin could slide down to #8.

Tannehill's completion percentage was only as good as it was because of the number of bubble screens he threw.
His accuracy on the deep ball is worse than Henne's.
He was never asked to read defenses in college. He threw to whichever receiver was getting the ball based on the play called. That's why, when he threw bubble screens he threw a lot to receivers who were blanketed by defenders and there was a loss on the play.
Take a look at Henne and then take a look at Tannehill. The similarities between their games are uncanny.

Quick...when was the last time Jeff Ireland built a superbowl winning team? Quick....
