Will Dolphins 'sell the farm' in free agency this year?

Several times last season I had Dolphins sources complain that the team was not spending enough money and certainly not as much as it could to be more competitive. Following one such column, I had a Dolphins official call me a "(bleep)-stirrer" for giving the sources a forum to complain the Dolphins were being cheap frugal.

I was between and betwixt because the Dolphins didn't offer to open their books to me.

Well, according to figures acquired from NFLPA sources, the folks complaining the club wasn't spending had a good point. According to the NFL Players Association, the Dolphins were one of the bottom five cash spending teams in the NFL. Miami joined the company of Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Cleveland and Chicago as the lowest spending teams.

And what does that mean? It means that while the club was spending effusively to buy up tickets so that fans could see home games on local television, it didn't exactly put too much cash on the table for actual talent that, you know, might want to make the fans go to the stadium to see.

Said another way, the Dolphins were very conservative with their cash in free agency.

Now, this is not meant to point the finger at ownership. I really cannot point the finger for this approach at anyone because I don't know exactly where the decision to be cheap frugal originated. I don't know if it came from owner Stephen Ross as a means of saving money or if general manager Jeff Ireland decided the talent available on the open market wasn't worth the price of Dolphins involvement.

But I do know this: The Dolphins kept their pennies.

And that leads me to this question: What will the team do this offseason?

Obviously, the idea that abounds is that Miami will be a major player in free agency because Peyton Manning is a major move that will not come cheaply, regardless of how many folks keep suggesting he's going to sign a small, cap-friendly, incentive laden deal with little or no guaranteed money. The truth is Manning is going to be the focus of a bidding war between several teams and the healthier he seems, the higher his price will be if he's a free agent. You must remember that Manning's agent is Tom Condon and he doesn't sell off his players cheaply.

So if the Dolphins are going to chase Manning as we expect, they will be spending money. But beyond that, I would urge caution in expecting the Dolphins to be major free agency spenders.

I've been told the Dolphins will approach free agency with a budget and a plan that does not include a "sell the farm" approach. If you expect Miami to get Manning, and add a receiver, and a pass-rusher and a tackle in free agency, you are kidding yourself.

Miami has neither the cap space nor the desire to spend that much cash to solve so many issues in free agency. I would expect a measured approach. Maybe they add Manning. They will try to re-sign a defensive lineman, either Paul Soliai or more likely Kendall Langford, maybe they sign another starter after Manning if the price is a bargain.

But Vincent Jackson? Or Mario Williams? Or anyone that would be considered a free agency treasure?

Not expecting that.

I believe most of Miami's wants and needs beyond Manning will come from the draft.

I think that is probably a fair-minded approach. But if the Dolphins don't do much in free agency beyond a Manning attempt, then that should raise eyebrows. That would suggest the team is being cheap rather than frugal.

Adding Manning is supposed to change things. It's supposed to put the Dolphins in win-now mode because Manning is getting no younger. They need players to put them over the top beyond Manning.

That will present Miami with a bit of a dilemma if they wish to be frugal. Again.

We'll see.

We shoul always be in WIN NOW mode....

Armando....

I know you were a HUGE advocate of Jeff Fisher...and the possible ALL-STAR staff that he would assemble...therby brining immediate "credibility" (your word...not mine)....to the FINS FO......

In the wake of the Gregg Williams scandal in New Orleans, and possibly Washington DC among other teams....

Does that change your view AT ALL of coach Fisher....in your opinion....does it speak to Fisher's character....by putting some one of Greg Williams character on the Rams pay roll....

If Fisher had NO IDEA that these allegations could ever be levied against Williams....does it speak to Fisher's Judgement....or lack thereof......It has been reported by you....and posted many times on here that Fisher is "well respected in coaching circles and the NFL"......One might think that one of his buddies would tip him off to the possibility of trouble.....but...perhaps not......

Armando....so you NOW give Ross and Ireland kudos for navagating our FINS clear of this potential black eye....

does it give you reason to take a second look @ the PHILBIN hire with renewed optimisim.....

Does it give you chance to write a peice on the FINS that says.....we don't know if the got the hire right.....but it certainly looks like th Rams may have gotten it wrong.....

Your thoughts Armando.....

If this bounty gate reaches back to Fisher and Williams time TOGETHER in Tennesee.....man.....the bullett we FINS would have dodged......

The best news for the Rams is this.....somebody blew the whistle BEFORE the season started....

It is not beyond the realm of possibility that Williams would have brought Bounty-Ball to the Rams Oraginzation....and after even ONE game being played....they they entire FO could have been investigated.....even if nothing were founded....the damage would have been done.....

the entire....

The only difference between Greg Williams and the other 31 DC's?

He got caught.

I would add that I want to see the Fins look to lock up some 2013 FA's at some point before the opening day. That is being smart with money as well.

I do not think it is out of the question to add Manning, sign Reggie Wayne and interior lineman leaving a RT, pass rusher DB help in April.

That is doable and smart IMO.

I am not sure why Mando thinks Mario Williams is going to be able to fulfill the 90 million dollar, Julius Peppers contract he will get. Terrible value.Terrible.

What does respected former Tampa bay Bucs and Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy have tom say about the matter....

"I know they had them in Tennessee," Dungy said in a text message to ProFootballTalk.com.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Dungy coached Indy....he routinley coached against the Fisher led Titans....however...he only faced the Greg Williams led defense once......

Pete Rose....

That is what is called a taling point....it is a phrase that is repeated over and over until those without the ability to think for themselves just believe it s fact.....

It is neither provable....nor disprovable.....but it makes EVERBODY feel better about the situation....its like comfort food....

well...."everyon'e's doing it".......

not good enough.....and unacceptable imo....

look at the steelers. with the cba, miami did a smart thing. look at the jets. we suppose to be like them and still end up in the crapper?

sorry mando, your a *****stirrer.

get ready people. Lot more Fa this year and half the league is cap strapped.

That new wonderful CBA is going to be great for the Players!!!!

Let the other teams waster their money. Just keep drafting good players!

Kris...

To think one and only one DC/organization is behind such activities is beyond naive. There have been rumblings of such things for as long as I can remember.

Beyond bounties, how many players intentionally try to hurt and maim their opponents even without the bounty? We've seen it captured in replays time and again.

The NFL should not be confused with Mister Rogers Neighborhood. IMO...

Mr. Rose....

For you to toss those accusations @ 31 other DCs.....is not only NAIVE...but it is irresonsible, neglegentm and completly unfounded @ this time.....

You should retract your stament.....

I am dealing in the facts....you are making a case on pure speculation with absoulutly NOTHING to stand on.....

neglegent....

I do find it funny though that the OC Fisher hired was replaced by his previous team with Tony Sparano. That does not inspire confidence in Schotty Jr.

Kris...

To flip the argument. To think that one and only one DC has been behind these things is too short sighted for me to grasp.

Some people are afraid to recognize that the real world just might not be as portrayed in Leave it to Beaver or the Andy Griffith show.

I'm not one of them.

Kris...

Furthermore you have no facts to deal with. You have nothing more accusations in the media. Don't tell me you believe report in the media is a fact. The only fact as of now is that the NFL is looking into the matter.

I'm of the innocent until proven guilty club. It is you that should retract your comments.

The media is frighteningly powerful. They can bend and shape the mind of the masses with a bold headline, whether it be proven fact, hyperbole, malice, or or simply uninformed opinion.

Mr. Rose....

I will give you that......I am basing my guilty plea based on reports I have seen.....but even you will have to admit...that this is on par with the COPS busting open a door...and finding the Bloody Knofe still in the Killer's hand..while he stands over the lifeless body....and the Killer's Shirt is drenched with blood...and rips from a struggle......

I don't think you can put out a blanke\t accusation against the 31 other DCs...without a shredd of evidence..... I stand by that....

Pete Rose.....

@ 6:21...now you are just rambling.....

You make an unfounded ACCUSATION against 31 other DC.....You just throw that out there....and then hyou turn around and CONDEMN the media for doing EXACTLY what you just did.....

c'mon man.....

The CONVERSATION is about GREGG WILLIAMS...and possibly JEFF FISHER....

try and keep it there....FOCUS...

Shreds of evidence can be found in the numerous statements by ex players confirming as such. Shreds of evidence can be found in numerous replays over the decades of defensive players trying to maim their opponents. Whether its by bounty or not, it is no less wrong. We don't see the Lions kicking Suh off the team for his antics, so bounty, mal intent, unspoken or not, its all the same crime.

Kris, I will agree it does not look good for them.

The focus is now on DC's around the league, the entire NFL is in the spotlight. Goodall knows that where there is one cockroach, there is often many.

Miami does need to address needs other than QB this offseason in free agency. If all they do is sign manning, it will affect ticket sales. Manning by himself will not sell tickets. At least Miami needs to address one other position in free agency. I am hoping Miami signs Reggie Nelson. He'd be an instant upgrade at FS.

While I agree that some money should be spent on FAs, don't sell the farm and get a bunch of unmanageble twits. And that happens a lot with free agents.

Balance as much as you can through drafting and free agents. Why waste money on the Albert Haynesworth type players? There is value in a lot of situations. But if you don't get value at each position you get an unbalanced team.

Say they sign Manning for 12 million a year for 3 years. Now they have to sign a lineman for 5 million a year. (crap shoot) But wait they need a pass rusher. Well draft one. (crap shoot)

This team was so bad after the snake and Camoron left that the only pieces on the team were a wide receiver and two running backs. In other words we were a new franchise or the equivalent of a new franchise. Given that despite all of our screaming and yelling and get this guy and get that guy, we are really into year 5 of a new franchise.

What is it that Ireland can really do? Look for value. Don't waste the owners money or our time. We didn't see Haynesworth or Ochocinco on this team because Ireland and Parcells decided that the media and the fans do not run this team. These two players basically wasted a lot of New Englands money and time. It is nice to have a team that can waste time and money on players but Miami does not have the luxury.

I say stay with the plan. Build a really good defense, get quality picks in the first round and really try hard for the second round. Go with Moore and a developmental qb for this year. In overreaching there is risk and Miami has been burned and is not in the position to go for the big guys just yet. I say we make the playoffs this year with a good solid formula.

Kris,

Would the following statement describe your feeling on the matter?

"I believe Gregg Williams invented the bounty and nobody else has ever done such a terrible thing."

Rose....

Nothing I have posted has suggested anything SO SIMPLE MINDED....

and the fact that your argument has regressed to that that point....

Tell me you have nothing more of signifigance to say...and you have run out of ideas on how to justify your way of thinking....

I am bowing out of this conversation before you get even more silly....

Good Day Sir....

"I was between and betwixt because the Dolphins didn't offer to open their books to me"

You must be delusional and/or a meglomaniac if you think the Phins should, or would, open their books to a beat reporter that they think of as a "****stirrer".

Mario Williams...stud DE. U never get a chance to sign a pass rusher like him in his prime. Because of his injury he is being overlooked, and that is a mistake. U will all see.

Kris,

It is you who is running away.

It is you who tried to twist my words into something else.

It is you who chose not to see the debate to any conclusion.

I posed a question that would close the matter, and you chose to scurry along.

So be it.

Nothing I have posted has suggested anything SO SIMPLE MINDED....

Posted by: Kris | March 06, 2012 at 06:48 AM

Just for the record, your argument indeed came across so simple minded, which is why I posed my question.

No biggie and have a nice day.

Mr.Ross, here's an idea...Instead of spending millions of dollars on a broken neck QB who's 36 years old, why don't you make Jeff Ireland trade up and draft Robert Griffin?? The most exciting young QB prospect in decades... Re-sign Paul Soliai and sign Mario Williams. We'd have one of the best if not the best d-line in football, like the NYG. Reggie Nelson will be much cheaper, draft o-linemen and a tight end and we'd be set...What do you think?

The only reason PM is being considered is to fill seats. I for one am willing to see what MM has again but they must spend the PM dollars on FA upgrades, and use draft on other needs and QB (future starter).

Re-sign Paul Soliai and sign Mario Williams. We'd have one of the best if not the best d-line in football, like the NYG. Reggie Nelson will be much cheaper, draft o-linemen and a tight end and we'd be set...What do you think?

Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | March 06, 2012 at 07:11 AM

I'm not an expert on how the cap works, but my understanding is there is no room to sign both of them at the price they each command.

Other nfl teams seem to find a way to keep their best players, why can't we?

So Miami is 15 Million under the cap and several teams are 30, 40, 50 million under but somehow Miami is cheap ? Makes no sense !!! Just another trash blog. What is a Miami source ? Rosenhaus ? Another agent ?

Mario Williams...stud DE. U never get a chance to sign a pass rusher like him in his prime. Because of his injury he is being overlooked, and that is a mistake. U will all see.

Posted by: David | March 06, 2012 at 06:59 AM

He hasn't played a full season in two years and his production has been declining since 2007. A lot of people called out Casserly on this one and Williams proved some people wrong earlier in his career. However, the steady drop off in sack production and missing 14 games over the past 2 seasons is not helping him in free agency.

Sign Mario Williams and Reggie Nelson, then draft WR Floyd from Notre Dame with 1st rd pick, then in 2 nd round draft a RIght Tackle. There are plenty of right tackles available this year, and u don't waste a 1st rd pick on a right tackle.

Oh yeah sign Peyton. Too.

Cant miami request to add last years unused cap money to this years cap money? Thought I read that somewhere recently could be wrong. Fisher has long been voted amongst nfls dirtiest coaches. Tells his defensive guys to get away with whatever they can in while everyone is piled up.

Armando, a good analogy is a stock that is on the way up that not everyone is buying into. That is what the Dolphins should find in free agency. The return on the investment for a free agent is often very low. Peyton Manning is an example of this. Manning is a stock that the Dolphins have to stay away from for many reasons. The body of work for Matt Flynn is small so he should be expensive but affordable. Flynn along with Matt Moore should be the quarterbacks for the Dolphins this season. The Dolphins will be able to build around them with the draft; RT, DE, TE, S, CB etc...some of these positions can come to the Dolphins through affordable free agents. I hope the professionals that Ross has will advocate staying away from Peyton Manning.

Ok

Good Morning Slaves,

Home has given us (3) things the Dolphins will be doing shortly

Same (3) things Home has told the sheeple for quite some time now:

(1)Miami's new base defense is the 4-3
So
NT Phat Paul will no longer be needed and WILL BE RELEASED saving Miami 12 Million dollars

(2)MVP QB Peyton Manning WILL be signed to the 2012 Miami Dolphins

(3)Defensive captain and safety Y-Bell will be resigned because unlike the NT position, a hard hitting run stopping safety is very important in the success of the 4 -3 defense

These (3) Things WILL ABSOLUTELY HAPPEN

* Home is the most accurate predictor anywhere when it comes to Miami Dolphin football and has an uncanny knack of determining what this team needs, team strengths & weaknesses, Star FA signings, players being released, players shining and players needing to be cut, Dolphins Win/Losses & score predictions

Enjoy Your Coffee and watch as these (3) things materialize

Its not that miami is cheap they.have alot of money tied up in a handful of plauers in long bush dansby marshall bell and burnett.

Why we won't go after Flynn:

The Dolphins might not want to break the bank for Flynn, either.

Though he has had two stellar starts - including one in 2011 with 480 yards passing and six touchdowns - several anonymous front-office executives told The National Football Post this week that Flynn is not an elite quarterback.

Several said Flynn lacks arm strength - one called him a "dink-and-dunk quarterback" - and said he might not do well outside of the Green Bay cocoon.

"He doesn't overwhelm you with talent," an NFC executive said.

Now in FA the Dolphins def WILL NOT be signing Mario Willims

Expect pass rusher DE to be the Miami Dolphins first selection in the draft

There is also a possibility we may draft DT Poe instead of a DE w our first pick

DT Poe is simply raw power at 346 LBs, unbelievably quick for a DT 4.9 in the 40 and strong as a beast benching 225 LBs for 44 reps

Home likes DT Poe and believes DT Poe can pressure the likes of QB Tom Brady collapsing the pocket and creating sacks

Go Phins!

Been reading this blog since its inception and only recently started posting after a 2 year hiatus but I have read all the blogs and alot of the posts and ive come to realize some people would argue with God that the sun is bright..

Home, what can i say?
I actually agree with you, but i have become enamored with RG3 and was willing to give two ears of our draft picks away as my man crush was getting out of hand.

I have come to realize you are right and signing Manning plus keeping five high draft picks including two first rounders is by far a much smarter option.

Cheap is a real good explanation of ross' confidence in Ireland. Ireland is enforcing the "cheap" policy. And Huizinga was the same way. Which might explain the sudden departure and lack of loyalty of Saban. It also explains the lack of wins and domination. So this all goes back to what Ive been saying all along. We need a Mark Cuban type of owner!! If you are going to win you cannot be worried about yr pocketbook. We keep on saying how bottomless Ross' pockets are yet we have forgotten he had a struggle trying to round up the money to just to purchase this team. So here we are we are not a good team because we simply just dont have the money or the know how to put together a winning team. We need a winning owner with money!!!

Kris, good point about Fisher and Williams (though, I kind of agree with Pete Rose, without factual evidence, I have to believe this stuff happens all around the NFL). I just want to see if a COACH actually gets suspended. Goddell loves to suspend players, let's see if he treats Coaches the same (since Belichick was never suspended, I doubt it).

Miami is far from cheap

The players have been paid generously

Calling Miami Dolphins owner cheap is unfair and untrue!

Ross will do whatever is in the best interest of the team and fans

After we sign MVP QB Peyton Manning
the light will come on and the Miami Dolphins with all their other very good players will bne the talk of the NFL

PERIOD

Miami doesn't buy talent. They try to get players on the cheap and over spend for older players. They don't retain players well either. It's been a long time since I bought a phins jersey. Nobody has been worthy of or shown they are staying long enough to buy a jersey of. Complete lack of blockbuster talent. Our draft picks haven't yielded much fruit either. Sean smith is sub par. Oderick is not noticeable. Misi doesn't do anything. Thomas can't keep healthy or put up any numbers. We need help. Ross isn't helping. He just runs around putting out fires. Trying to smokescreen fans with big name coaches and old QBs to attempt to show he is trying.

I cannot wait to buy my Manning jersey!

Mando is 100% on point with this post (I've been screaming this for 2 years). Miami has consistently spent in the middle of the pack, and they've consistently finished the Season....in the middle of the pack.

Look, it's the Owner's money. Ross will either spend it on players, or to avoid blackouts in Miami due to lack of fan appreciation. There is no getting around that point. No one wants to see a backup QB try to get their act together for 3 quarters, and finally score a couple of points and lose anymore. That train has come and gone for Dolphins fans in S. Florida. They have better things to do, and I'm not mad at them for that. In order to win, you need talent. Talent costs money. It's a simple equation. You don't need to be the #1 spending team, but you need to be in the Top 10 (generally) if you want to be a winner.

Who is Manning supposed to throw to? lol

So, between this Thurs. and next Tues. many, many decisions will need to be finalized by Ireland. Whatever your feelings about the guy, as a Dolphins fan you better HOPE he makes the right move(s).

MVP QB Peyton Manning throws to 4 TD scoring @ Pro Bowl & MVP of the Pro Bowl Brandon Marshall

and
WR Simply The Bess
WR Brian Hartline
WR Clyde Gates
RB/WR Reggie Bush
TE Anthony Fasano
TE Charles Clay

and hopefully
WR Reggie Wayne
TE Greg Olsen

Go Phins!

Home has given us

So Sign Williams,Jackson, RT, and trade the draft for RG3. There simple all spots filled and we will have a QB beyond 2013!

If they take Flynn than expect a new FO in 2 or 3 years. What a waste. Acorns and philberts

Ok

We now know after all the BS

that

MVP QB Peyton Manning WILL be a Miami Dolphin in 2012

So in Free Agency
If the Dolphins are going to sign any other veteran players then it would be very, very smart to sign FA
Center Jeff Saturday, helping Manning & the O-line

and if FA WR Reggie Wayne signs with the Dolphins
then expect greatness immediately from this offense

RB/WR Reggie Bush & WR Reggie Wayne would play very well together on this, .... wait 4 it, .................... Miami Dolphins WINNING TEAM!

I just want the team to return to greatness. It's been a long time. I don't know how Detroit fans do it.
