Will Dolphins 'sell the farm' in free agency this year?

Several times last season I had Dolphins sources complain that the team was not spending enough money and certainly not as much as it could to be more competitive. Following one such column, I had a Dolphins official call me a "(bleep)-stirrer" for giving the sources a forum to complain the Dolphins were being cheap frugal.

I was between and betwixt because the Dolphins didn't offer to open their books to me.

Well, according to figures acquired from NFLPA sources, the folks complaining the club wasn't spending had a good point. According to the NFL Players Association, the Dolphins were one of the bottom five cash spending teams in the NFL. Miami joined the company of Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Cleveland and Chicago as the lowest spending teams.

And what does that mean? It means that while the club was spending effusively to buy up tickets so that fans could see home games on local television, it didn't exactly put too much cash on the table for actual talent that, you know, might want to make the fans go to the stadium to see.

Said another way, the Dolphins were very conservative with their cash in free agency.

Now, this is not meant to point the finger at ownership. I really cannot point the finger for this approach at anyone because I don't know exactly where the decision to be cheap frugal originated. I don't know if it came from owner Stephen Ross as a means of saving money or if general manager Jeff Ireland decided the talent available on the open market wasn't worth the price of Dolphins involvement.

But I do know this: The Dolphins kept their pennies.

And that leads me to this question: What will the team do this offseason?

Obviously, the idea that abounds is that Miami will be a major player in free agency because Peyton Manning is a major move that will not come cheaply, regardless of how many folks keep suggesting he's going to sign a small, cap-friendly, incentive laden deal with little or no guaranteed money. The truth is Manning is going to be the focus of a bidding war between several teams and the healthier he seems, the higher his price will be if he's a free agent. You must remember that Manning's agent is Tom Condon and he doesn't sell off his players cheaply.

So if the Dolphins are going to chase Manning as we expect, they will be spending money. But beyond that, I would urge caution in expecting the Dolphins to be major free agency spenders.

I've been told the Dolphins will approach free agency with a budget and a plan that does not include a "sell the farm" approach. If you expect Miami to get Manning, and add a receiver, and a pass-rusher and a tackle in free agency, you are kidding yourself.

Miami has neither the cap space nor the desire to spend that much cash to solve so many issues in free agency. I would expect a measured approach. Maybe they add Manning. They will try to re-sign a defensive lineman, either Paul Soliai or more likely Kendall Langford, maybe they sign another starter after Manning if the price is a bargain.

But Vincent Jackson? Or Mario Williams? Or anyone that would be considered a free agency treasure?

Not expecting that.

I believe most of Miami's wants and needs beyond Manning will come from the draft.

I think that is probably a fair-minded approach. But if the Dolphins don't do much in free agency beyond a Manning attempt, then that should raise eyebrows. That would suggest the team is being cheap rather than frugal.

Adding Manning is supposed to change things. It's supposed to put the Dolphins in win-now mode because Manning is getting no younger. They need players to put them over the top beyond Manning.

That will present Miami with a bit of a dilemma if they wish to be frugal. Again.

We'll see.

MAYBE ROSS GET A GOVERMENT LOAN.
(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Cheapo Ross would rather give up draft choices then give up money.

Ross will fall into the trap that Manning can put this team on his back and lead it to a championship. History has all to often proven this wrong.

Great qb's put teams on thier backs when in the "PRIME" of thier career. Pick a great qb and look at thier performances in thier prime. Then compare it to thier performances on the "BACKEND" of thier illustrous careers. QB's just are no longer capable of this at the backend of thier careers.

Elway at the backend of his career won 2 sb's. But elway had "all the pieces in place" on both sides of the ball. He wasnt asked to carry the team. He was only asked to conduct the orchestra.

We dont have a orchestra in Miami. We still need a qb that can be a "one man band" in order to be successful. With Manning now at thew backend of his illustrous career. History clearly states, "he's more symphony conductor" right now than a "one man band".

Ross got a government loan on his real estate and used the proceeds to buy the Dolphins. Then sold off pieces to celebs.

COME BACK IN 60 MINUTES AND SEE YG/DB/FLIPPER BREED TO FLIP-FLOP LIKE A TUNA JUST CAUGHT ON MANNING.

In other news…the Lingerie Football League is increasingly gaining popularity due to the fact that they are allowed to hit harder

The phrase is written "betwixt and between," not vice versa. Don't use a phrase if you don't know how to, Armando.

Singing Mario Williams should be number 1 Priority if u want to beat Tom Brady.

Not sure about that YG. This team won 20 games over the last 3 years with a bottom scraper qb and were extremely close in several others where even a top 15 qb would've added 3 to 4 wins a year.

Nobody needs to carry this team but peyton playing at 75% gets us to 10-11 wins easily.

Miami Dolphins star is now so dim you would need the Hubble telescope to find it in the night skies. With each passing regime in Miami, our star has moven further and further away.

If we were a pacifier, a cry baby would spit us away!

But don't you see that Draftees will be the backbone of NFL Teams? Much cheaper than FA's.

WHY IT TAKE 17 YEAR TO BUILD A PLAYOFF TEAM?, ONLY TOOK 3 MONTHS TO BUILD HOOVER DAM, TOOK 3 DAY TO BUILD ROME,TOK ONLY 21 YEAR TYO BUILD GRAND CANYON, WHY IT TAKE THIS LONG?
(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

So it looks like they are resigning Henne now. So much for Manning. Maybe they know something we don't know?

MarkT,

We still have problems on both sides of the ball. on offense we still have oline issues and no legit deep threat wr who consistently garners defensive attention.

On defense, we have a very suspect pass rush and a even more suspect secondary.

Only thing this team consistently does at an above average level is run the ball and stop the run. Like Armando said, we'll shoot our fa wad on Peyton and have to rely on Ireland's "VERY SUSPECT" drafting abilities to fill any other voids.

This sound like Peyton Manning will have to be a "ONE MAN BAND" in Miami to me.

OSCAR,WHEN GRANND CANYON WAS BEING BUILT WERE TO A LABORER?

I can bet that Players that scored a high Wonderlic this year include, Melvin Ingram, RG3, David De Castro, Ryan Tannehill, other top 10's.

Seriously though ...where did this Mabnning frenzy originate ? Which FO person declared it publicly......??????????

--------------- yah, that's what I thought ---no one.

Marques Colston and Vincent Jackson didnt get franchised.

...Manning

If I understand you correctly, ALoco, yes. I was part of the River.

The Colorado River.

IDK Mando. I have yet to see the Dolphins get serious about acquiring really good talent. Most of what we get are cast offs from other teams. The whole money thing makes sense. Ross never wants to get into a bidding war with other teams.

Not many franchised Players this year. Heh, heh.

I just wish we knew what this team was trying to do. Everything is kept quiet all the time. We don't know what Ireland is doing or what direction he is trying to take this team.

We don't even have an identity anymore. If you don't have a FACE of the franchise you have no franchise. At least the Jets had REX as a face. We have no identity to speak of.

Sparrow..that is the Parcell's influence....we don't deserve to know...we're only fans....just cause we pay the bills.....

I WONDER IF ROSS IS DOING A "MAJOR LEAGUE" WITH DOLPINS,YOU KNOW MOVIE,OWNER WANT TO MOVE TEAM BUT CAN ONLY DO IT IF HE HAS NO ATTENCE,HE WANT TO BE MR.HOLLYWOOD WITH HIS B_LIST OWNER HE MIGHT WANT TO MOVE TEAM TO HOLLYWOOD., IT WORKED WITH OPRAH,SHENOW HAVE TEAM IN APE-CITY.

JackSparrow,

Armando basically hit the nail right on the head in today's column. Basically since the end of the Shula era the braintrust running the franchise have had a "SMALL MARKET" approach to building this team.

A franchise that was once "VINTAGE" has now become just plain "VONTAGE"! LOL

and if we didnt have any cap space this year what would your headline be then? They are right. You like to stir the crap into "stories"

I can bet that Players that scored a high Wonderlic this year include, Melvin Ingram, RG3, David De Castro, Ryan Tannehill, other top 10's.
Posted by: oscar canosa | March 06, 2012 at 01:18 PM

I don't know the other's scores, But I heard Tannehill's was a 22. Not bad, not great. Decent.
Personally, I would expect Griffin's to be higher. He seems extremely bright.
Intelligence is tops in my QB skills list. It would be nice if the Fins thought so too.
Yes, I know Marino had a low score, but I'd call him a unique exception.

Please explain a little further about "one of the lowest cash spending teams". If Miami was so frugal in 2011, why do they only have around 15 million in cap space available? Were they just frugal on free agent spending in 2011? It sure appears with the minimal cap space for this year, they have spent money.

What the heck did Aloco say at 1:31.........?

lol

Ireland, I believe, was more open this year than when Parcells was here. Still, there are some things that Teams cannot divulge, specially now, before Draft time.

By the way, we have oe of the highest paid Lt, THE highest paid lb at the time, THE highest paid wr at the time. We have had an owner that all fans know will open his wallet. Now, You want us to believe we have a cheap team? Really?Please....

Take this kiddie stuff to bleacher reports Armando

Sparrow, maybe you'd like them to post our playbook and draft board on the internet?

Guess what, fans don't get to know jack shtt anywhere.

JackSparrow, it's none of your business. None of this discussion even occurred 5 years ago before the advent of the modern blog-paper. Your role, as a fan, is to show up at games and cheer for your team, not to be told 8 months before the seasons starts what certain employees of the Miami Dolphins might be thinking.

Everyone here is stupid, so I'm out.

WHAT IS "WONDERLIC"?, IS THAT A NEW XXX MOVIE?
(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

I hope Philbin have the guys running 120 till they puke theyre brains out unlike Sparano who didnt have the team ready to begin last season.

Yeah, JS_in_LA. Marino's was a 12.

For Lord's information..that head in san approach would be fine if the team didn't suk so bad for the past 10 years.......

Home is usually right when he makes a prediction. Just saying...

How can Miami be a "cheap" team yet we only have $15 million in cap room?

Weren't Marshall and Dansby considered to be "big-time" free agent acquisitions?

Is there anything about this team that Mando likes now that Jason Taylor is gone?

Why are there so many trolls on this blog?

OHIO, IT WELL KNOW THAT OPRAH BOUGHT TEAM AND MOVE THEM TO APE-CITY, WHERE THE APE CITY DONKYS PLAY,IT RUMORED THAT CHINA MAN COWER WILL BE COACHING DONKYS THIS YEAR SO HE AND OPRAH CAN DRINK PINA COLADAS ALL DAY.
(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Corners,

Areas where the dolphins have spent money can be compare to putting a brand new paint job on a rust bucket truck without first having the body work done.

Its like trying to tune up an engine that first needs a complete overhaul.

In New England, the fans role is to come out and cheer for the team.....here ...the role is to first define exactly what team there is to cheer about.....

Thanks Aloco,

I understand much better now :)

tracy474,

Please keep up. There arent "MANY" trolls on this blog. It's 1-3 bloggers using "many troll aliases". LOL

How can you call yourself a "fan" if you spend all of your time hating the team?

Good point by Tracy @ 1:44

Who here would spend a week with Aloco?, let that set in for a minute or two,What would be the out come after a week?, Would you too go insane, Would you take a bullit to the head?Would you be "Enlighted" These are things I wonder about.

Tracy 474 if that is directed at me, you are mistaken...when have I ever said I hate the team?

I just dislike losing ......is that okay?

If we all came hear and typed HOORAY DOLPHINS.......and nothing more...this would be an excercise in boredom....

Personally, I would sell the farm to get RGIII. At least we would finally have a face for this organization. What's it gonna hurt at this point? Its only been 30 plus years since we sniffed a superbowl run. Might as well unload future draft busts and go with a potential superstar.

Yg, every team in the league has holes, no team is complete.

Fact is the dolphins with an effective manning for a few years would be a factor.

i still cant believe how blatenly dirty the jets are, going after sporano just to see what kind of info they can sqeeze out of him.since our team started playing so well towards the end of the season they thimnk they are going to get a bunch secret info about it. i mean of all the people to look at, they didnt even look around they just signed him like asap. i mean he wasnt even a offensive cordinator was he? 100 bucks he's gone the min they think they got everything they can get out of him. damn i hate those chumps and the way they do things. i mean if they are such a great team as ryan puts it then why are they picking up our scraps? low down, dirty, rotten, no good p.o.s's

Do you really want the face on your Dolphins to have dreads and wear Tenage Mutant Ninja Turtles socks?

Aw come on now Sparrow....just be happy with the team as it is...be a good fan and smile....

It is a known fact that Blogs all over the World can make $ according to the # of "hits" in certain Surveys. The Miami Herald has afforded Armando the opportunity to make more $, in addition to his salary as a columnist, by letting him put his name in this Publication. Of course there are only 1-3 bloggers here(in addition to Armando)(and excluding me).

Do you really want the face on your Dolphins to have dreads and wear Tenage Mutant Ninja Turtles socks?
Posted by: NFL expert | March 06, 2012 at 01:52 PM

If he wins, HECK YES!!
Especially if he doesn't choke dogs to death.
Maybe they'll start selling those socks, and some dread wigs at the merchandise stands.

Jaksin.....if the Jet's need to rely on Tony S to tell them how to win, they are in a really dark place as a franchise.....

I just ask questions everyone else is scared to ask
