So where is the Jake Long contract extension?

Jake Long is in the final year of a contract that seemed oh-so-expensive in 2008 when he signed as the first overall draft pick but has been well worth the money to date. Long is scheduled to make $11.2 million in his contract year and cost upwards of $12.8 million against the cap.

The base salary is basically the cost of doing business. The cap charge seems like a case of business that could be done better.

The fact is the Dolphins need to extend Long's deal. He has been a good player. He is a foundation stone for the franchise. And an extension could easily lower that cap charge and give the team more space to maneuver as it wishes in the coming days of the 2012 league year.

Yet, off Long went on his honeymoon recently and the Dolphins didn't have a new contract ready for him as a wedding gift.

Ah, the why is a puzzle.

The club's official stance is that Long without doubt is not going anywhere, that he is outstanding and that he absolutely will not be allowed to hit free agency at the end of 2012 so that he can possibly go elsewhere.

Good call, Dolphins folks!

So why the delay when an extension could be beneficial for both sides? Well the possibilities are the puzzle.

Maybe both sides have a wink-wink agreement that something will get done and it will. Great, but time is money and the longer this is on the back burner, the weaker the Dolphins seem from a cap standpoint.

Maybe both sides have talked and they simply haven't come to an agreement. This is probably the most likely scenario. The truth is gauging Long's value won't be easy. Cleveland re-signed Joe Thomas to an 8-year contract worth a reported $92 million that included a whopping $44 million in guaranteed money. That's an $11.5 million annual average. And the trouble for the Dolphins is Long will expect to exceed this deal by a significant amount.

Worth it? Obviously yes at first blush. But look deeper. Long is worth is if he's healthy. Long is worth it if the club last season judged his play to be as good as ever -- unlikely considering his rash of injuries. Long, in short, is worth it if the Dolphins believe him to be Jonathan Ogden or Walter Jones -- both of whom played for years at exceedingly high levels and without injuries.

But what if Long is Tony Boselli? Boselli was perhaps the best left tackle in the game early in his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Big, strong, mobile, he was Long before Long. But then he injured a knee. Then he injured an ankle. Then he hurt his shoulder. And then he hurt the shoulder again. And again.

And by his seventh NFL season, Boselli was broken. Folks were surprised when Boselli was placed on the expansion list and allowed to go to Houston. But when he arrived in Houston, injured and unable to contribute, everyone understood.

So is Long on the road to being Boselli? In the past two years he's had a building litany of injuries -- first a knee, then an ankle and shoulder and last year a back and a torn right biceps that forced him to finish the season on injured reserve.

Are the Dolphins worried the trend might continue? Even privately there is confidence Long will recover and continue to be a pillar of the offensive line. But I would imagine the club would nonetheless like to protect itself financially against the continuation of the recent trend.

Perhaps the club prefers to see how Long returns and is handling training camp and the early part of the season before committing to a new contract.

That would be smart. Of course, in the meantime, that significant cap hit glows in neon as needing to be addressed. It is a catch-22. Pay Long and gamble he'll be fine? Or delay a new contract and suffer the tightened cap space?

There is, of course, another scenario that might explain the lack of a new contract for Long. It is obvious this is a big-ticket item. It will cost a lot of dollars. What if owner Stephen Ross, smarting from tanking ticket sales, simply isn't in position to dole out $40-$50 million in guaranteed money right now, much of which would no doubt come in the form of a hefty signing bonus?

What if the Dolphins -- among the bottom five spenders in cash outlay a year ago -- are simply trying to hold down costs again?

These are all questions the Dolphins don't have to answer. But it would clear things up if they did.

Slow news day

Clue you're right. They're definitely in some sort of rebuild mold. I wouldn't call it an all out rebuild as much as a retooling.

We're probably going to end up with Bell again because no one is really interested. Our defense upgraded from Will Allen with Marshall. The guy is just simply a better nickleback at this stage and has also played FS a bit. Solai is back. So our defense actually improved a bit over last season, and we SHOULD be able to rely on player development boosting the over all numbers as well. Our defense was ranked pretty high last year so I'm not worried about that side.

Remember we have a very easy schedule this season too.

Here's what we totally agree on. Very worried about the offense. You're going with the "we're doomed" stance and I'm going with the "lets wait, it may turn out to be something stance". I think we're both reaching a bit.

I'm HOPING that Philbin is a great coach and teacher.
I'm hoping that the new offense will work like they say. Because this offense doesn't rely on superstars (God knows we have none!) it relies on solid players all across the board that can do their jobs. There is no 120 catches 1200 yard guys in this offense. It is attacking and quick and spreads the ball every where.
I'm hoping that with our easy schedule and new offense that we can surprise some teams in the beginning and maybe fight for a wild card.

I realize I'm hoping for a lot. And I realize that the reality of our team will probably fall somewhere in between what I hope and what you expect. I'm just a person that likes to watch it play out. I'm hopelessly hopeful! You never know, stranger things have happened.

It's official. Occupy Davie is a Jets troll and is trying to cause some sort of revolt against our team. Not going to happen pal. As bad as our team has been for 10 years it doesn't even come close to how inept your entire organization has been since 1966. One superbowl and 3 afc championship trips. THAT IS ALL. That is all you have to hang your hat on. So it's no wonder you're in here, you know a team with real history when you see it. You should just join us man, you're in here every day anyway.

James Guava, Occupy Davie = HOME

occupy davie,

Your hurting you're so ignorant your hurting your own cause.

Get the Fck out of here with your pedophilia crap.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to notify your parole agent of any changes in address.

Ohio was that you saying you were going to start a Dolphins site? Did you do that? Because NO ONE is here. Craig, Kris, Klndry, Mark in Toronto, and all of the other good posters are missing in action today. Did that one person attacking everyone chase them all away?

Mike Sherman was fired, FIRED, FIRED I TELL YOU as Texas A&M's coach after the Aggies finished the regular season a disappointing 6-6.

and now JEFFIRELAND has singed him to beat the Patriots

Ah ha Ha Ha!

Go Fish!

There's odinseye. Hahahahaha nice. That guy is a tool Odin. Can't believe he is the one people may be following to a rally. If that doesn't prove what shmucks those people are I don't know what would. This guy is totally hurting his own cause and he's too ignorant to see it.

JEF FIRELAND 3.29.12 Protest March!

I guess I'm out too. Have fun Occupy, now you have the whole place to yourself! At least you have plenty of different names. You can talk to yourself all day!

The best way for fans to make their voice heard (besides the great airplane banners) is to send Ross a message in a language he understands: Empty Seats. Vote with your feet. I was a season ticket holder and told the front office that I will not renew while the current front office staff is in place. And I wont watch the games on TV if they buy up all the empty seats either. How embarrassing is it when 'our house' is filled with opposing fans who are louder and vocal about their team. Its an embarrassment that destroys the football tradition in South Florida.

Ross- You need to go.

I'll be occupying the end zone with the Jets in Dolphin stadium like a few months ago when i beat the snot out of the fish!

He might be a reason that a QB has a chance to be successful in the League

I'll be throwing 7 or 8 TD passes their next season too,

Miami needs a running game to keep the other team from killing their QB. Hopefully they can solve that problem as well

Ross is probably starting to regret buying into this circus.

Don't think for a minute that he's taking this protest stuff lightly either.

He didn't become a Billionaire by making bad investments. He'll do one of two things. Sell or can Ireland. I don't think he's selling.

This years draft will be Make it, don't break it time for Ireland.

Since they got Tebow if Jet fans want to go to a game they’ll have to travel to Miami.

Yes I was the one thinking of starting a blog of my own. I have not done that yet, but I'm still thinking about it. I have started blogs in the past and LOVE IT. It's fun to me, and it'd be fun to have the regulars visit sometimes.

We shall see.......

For those of you that enjoy talking NFLdraft I've created a new site. The url is above. It is just a forum to talk about the NFL and the draft.

It is pretty much a blank slate. You can create your own topics to be abused or appreciated or just comment on current topics already there.

Since it is a new site and I am new to creating one suggestions are welcome.

I'm going to play GM for a moment...I just made the corportate decision to pick up Drew Stanton and not consider drafting a QB until the 3rd or 4th round. If there's nothing of value there, I'm going to defer to next year.

Salguero, Armando asalguero@miamiherald.com to me

Took care of the faker. Deleted.

Idiot Ross is planning on honoring Tim Tebow again this year...WHEN THE JETS COME TO TOWN!

Mark in Toronto,

Did spring come early this year or what? I'm going out tonight to check on the Smelt running early.

Anyway, for all the things we agree on and for all your great input, I couldn't disagree with you more on Tannehill at 8!

Even if we didn't have major needs all over the place, I still wouldn't reach for Tannehill at 8. The guy was 1 year starter and went 6-6. What's more, he's not the type of talent you can just throw into the mix. They will benefit(NEEDS TO)sit for a years or two.

A QB darfted in the top 8 should be a day one starter. Not a two year project.

Odin, love smelt eggs. But all I know about them is get 'em at the store. Do you try and harvest them?

The Doplhins are not business savvy. Look for Long to be on another team next year. I believe they are too cheap to keep him. Miami made the BIG mistake by re-signing Solai. Why pay him so much money when you could have replaced him with someone in the draft.

Don't be surprise if they draft a left tackle and trade Long this year. It makes sense to me since the cost is less to do so and you regain picks and younger and stronger guys since Long has been hurt the past 2 years.

I haven't tried the Smelt eggs.....YET!

People up here fry em up all the time. You have to get the eggs out without breaking the sack to do it.

I'm usually to drunk and hungry for all that. I take em right out of the river, clean them Ozzy style and throw em on the Burner!

Quick break to read some posts and I have to wonder out of all the former players who have dropped by to tell us the Dolphins suck, do any of them realize they are the direct reason that the Dolphins sucked? I mean are they under the impression that they somehow played here yet didn't contribute to the overall suckiness (yes it's not a word) of this team?

Tony Sparano tells us the Dolphins suck. Yeah we know Tony! You are a direct cause for that. The funny thing will be when Philbin takes the Marshallless Dolphins further this season than Sparano did last year with Marshall. I'm guaranteeing more than 6 wins this season. No not a playoff guarantee or anything else. Just that Joe Philbin will be ten times the coach Sparano could ever hope to be.

long is the best player on the dolphins team.the man played with one arm half the year, and still did better than anyone else on that line.Pouncy did ok,a healty long is one of the best lineman in the league, have some faith.don't let him get away.

odinseye I couldn't agree with you more on not taking Tannehill at #8.

But with that being said he also is not the reason the team went 6-6. If you do some research you will see that he was one of the only reasons that team had a chance to win in those 6 losses. The defense was absolutely atrocious.

I just can't for the life of me figure out why people talk about qbs as if they are the only people on the field. As if it were Brady against Manning in the Super Bowl last season. Tannehill didn't go 6-6, his team went 6-6, and if it wasn't for him they could have have been 2-10. (The defense showed up for 2 games last year).

But agreed, still a reach at #8. There will be far better talent on the board. The question for Jeff is how much does he believe in Sherman's assessment of Tannehill (is it a good one? for all we know Mike is saying no about this kid). If Sherman says he thinks this kid will be a star in 4 years at age 26 will there be other teams drafting behind us who think the same? If so he may be forced to take Tannehill early.

What was Shap Shap? I don't know what you meant.

Well, we can add Clue, Kris to all the aliases of this smeared assshole.

"You will be soon forgotten after you pass away. Within a decade, it will be as if you never existed on this Earth."

Of course this only pertains to low life's who disowned their families or losers who have no friends. An artist and close friend of mine named Michael Straub passed away from a severe asthma attack 8 years ago. Every year in the first weekend of August 20 of his friends and around 40 members of his family get together on family property in Maine for the weekend to celebrate the memory of our great friend and brother.

Good friends and family will keep you alive in their memories forever.

I don't know you. If you post here more regularly I will talk to you. Otherwise you could be one of the trolls trying to start some nonsense. Not interested but thank you.

Not sure about that, 78. I had this girlfriend once that her mother was the most sadistic and torturing of all parents, then, in her tombstone, the family decided to write, "You were all Love". Hmmm....

odinseye & phins78

Tannehill at 8 may be a reach but between 8 & Clevelands 2nd pick at 22 no team really needs a QB. maybe the Phins trade down 7 pick up extra picks.they couldrisk losing Tannehill but i like osweiler too(I did not see any actual games of his but I watched some you tube clips and osweiler looks like an option. He has also gotten good writeups)

This is so boring. I can't wait for the season to start. One thing we will all watch when the season starts:

Take that to the bank. It doesn't matter if you agree with me or if you like Tebow. I'm simply telling you what is going to happen on the field.

I will come back here after it happens and remind you that I told you so.

Tim Tebow to the Jets took them from 17 points a game to about 24 points a game--enough for 3 or 4 extra wins.

Again, I am NOT saying he's a Bradylike QB who will throw 40 times a game. He is a good change of pace guy and a good addition to any team that wants to win, quite obviously.

Well done, 78. Let nobody here talk to someone we don't know. I'll follow thru.

Here are the records of the AFC East teams next year:

1. Patriots -- 14-2, AFC East Champs, Super Bowl Champs (Brady/Bellicheck won't let them lose again. Look for Brady to divorce Giselle and get his head back in the game.)

2. Jets -- 10-6

3. Bills -- 10-6

4. Fins -- 5-11

* All 3 other teams will be 2-0 vs. Dolphins.

Blackmon does not have proto-typical size of what many Teams want no;, however, Trent Richardson is the complete package and he will probably go Top 5. If so, then, Luck, RG3, Kalil, Richardson, Claiborne(another complete package). The rest, after those.

I wouldn't take any of the remaining QB's at 8.

I wouldn't be completely against some trade down scenario, but that would depend on which playmaker might still be available when the clock starts.

Either way, toe to toe, head to head, I'd take Cousins over Tannehill all day long.

BTW, I'd be all in on signing Drew Stanton(as someone mentioned earlier)and taking a pass this year on Cousins, Tannehill, Weeden and Osweiler.

Having said that though, If I did get Stanton, I'd try to make some trades somewhere along the line to strngthen our chances of moving for a QB in nexts years draft.

I am a new poster.i did not come here to rip anyone.only to exchange opinions and ideas about my beloved Miami Dolphins in an adult manner.Humor is fine but personal attacks are something I avoid. I became a fan in 1971.I remember sitting on the couch holding my Dolphin helmet and getting so upset as the Cowgirls beat us in the Superbowl. We are still the only team to go to 3 straight!

41phish, your an oldschool Dolfan. My earlest memories come when the Dolphins Don Shula played Marv Levy in Buffalo when it was a big snow stornm. Early 90's

@41phish, the bills went to 4 straight. all losses.

Alert 41phish: Clue is a clueless, uneducated, immature child who is wrong nearly 100% of the time.

We are still the only team to go to 3 straight!

Posted by: 41phish | March 23, 2012 at 02:51 PM

Ever heard of the Buffalo Bills? They went to 4 straight.

So, in order to get the guy we have targeted, we only have to worry about positions #6 and #7.(assuming no trade ups or down).

Y bell, GTFOH

Odin -- I would take any of these 3 where ever they can get 1 of them. I don't care where. We need a QB of the future and IMO any of these guys could fill that position.
