So where is the Jake Long contract extension?

Jake Long is in the final year of a contract that seemed oh-so-expensive in 2008 when he signed as the first overall draft pick but has been well worth the money to date. Long is scheduled to make $11.2 million in his contract year and cost upwards of $12.8 million against the cap.

The base salary is basically the cost of doing business. The cap charge seems like a case of business that could be done better.

The fact is the Dolphins need to extend Long's deal. He has been a good player. He is a foundation stone for the franchise. And an extension could easily lower that cap charge and give the team more space to maneuver as it wishes in the coming days of the 2012 league year.

Yet, off Long went on his honeymoon recently and the Dolphins didn't have a new contract ready for him as a wedding gift.

Ah, the why is a puzzle.

The club's official stance is that Long without doubt is not going anywhere, that he is outstanding and that he absolutely will not be allowed to hit free agency at the end of 2012 so that he can possibly go elsewhere.

Good call, Dolphins folks!

So why the delay when an extension could be beneficial for both sides? Well the possibilities are the puzzle.

Maybe both sides have a wink-wink agreement that something will get done and it will. Great, but time is money and the longer this is on the back burner, the weaker the Dolphins seem from a cap standpoint.

Maybe both sides have talked and they simply haven't come to an agreement. This is probably the most likely scenario. The truth is gauging Long's value won't be easy. Cleveland re-signed Joe Thomas to an 8-year contract worth a reported $92 million that included a whopping $44 million in guaranteed money. That's an $11.5 million annual average. And the trouble for the Dolphins is Long will expect to exceed this deal by a significant amount.

Worth it? Obviously yes at first blush. But look deeper. Long is worth is if he's healthy. Long is worth it if the club last season judged his play to be as good as ever -- unlikely considering his rash of injuries. Long, in short, is worth it if the Dolphins believe him to be Jonathan Ogden or Walter Jones -- both of whom played for years at exceedingly high levels and without injuries.

But what if Long is Tony Boselli? Boselli was perhaps the best left tackle in the game early in his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Big, strong, mobile, he was Long before Long. But then he injured a knee. Then he injured an ankle. Then he hurt his shoulder. And then he hurt the shoulder again. And again.

And by his seventh NFL season, Boselli was broken. Folks were surprised when Boselli was placed on the expansion list and allowed to go to Houston. But when he arrived in Houston, injured and unable to contribute, everyone understood.

So is Long on the road to being Boselli? In the past two years he's had a building litany of injuries -- first a knee, then an ankle and shoulder and last year a back and a torn right biceps that forced him to finish the season on injured reserve.

Are the Dolphins worried the trend might continue? Even privately there is confidence Long will recover and continue to be a pillar of the offensive line. But I would imagine the club would nonetheless like to protect itself financially against the continuation of the recent trend.

Perhaps the club prefers to see how Long returns and is handling training camp and the early part of the season before committing to a new contract.

That would be smart. Of course, in the meantime, that significant cap hit glows in neon as needing to be addressed. It is a catch-22. Pay Long and gamble he'll be fine? Or delay a new contract and suffer the tightened cap space?

There is, of course, another scenario that might explain the lack of a new contract for Long. It is obvious this is a big-ticket item. It will cost a lot of dollars. What if owner Stephen Ross, smarting from tanking ticket sales, simply isn't in position to dole out $40-$50 million in guaranteed money right now, much of which would no doubt come in the form of a hefty signing bonus?

What if the Dolphins -- among the bottom five spenders in cash outlay a year ago -- are simply trying to hold down costs again?

These are all questions the Dolphins don't have to answer. But it would clear things up if they did.

So are you Homely, homer, home! Does you patheticism know no boundries?

The only thing sadder than the Dolphins right now is your life.

It is a fact, that when there is a prolonged argument in a Blog, at least one of the proponents is a troll. Mature People don't waste their time in such silliness; they just move on. This is Internet 102. Congratulations, we've just graduated!

The OLine is all about subtleties. You don't have to be that good to be that great. Chip shots and opening just a little hole is all you need. Protecting the QB for a second or two is all you need. A big body can do both even if they are not that good.

I say that to say this. Long would stay under my regime. If I can resign him. I would beef up the OL with the premise that Long won't last much Longer.

Build up the OLine and any QB can have some success in Miami.

I say that to say this...Reiff at #8 or Blackmon if we can move up without having a run on the bank. Moore or Garrard can have some success in this division if the LINE can protect them. We all know Brady falls apart if he gets pressured. Therefore, no pressure means great success.

For whats it worth,

The first NFL game I ever watched was the first playoff game in franchise history. The fins lost to the Raiders 21-14 in a mud bath in 1970. The next year I watched as they beat the Colts 21-0 in the playoffs, and then on Christmas Day when they beat the Chiefs in the longest game in NFL history. I watched the spanking by the 'boys too, and what was worse was, my Dad was a die-hard Dallas fan.

I learned much about humility that day...and have had my fill of it as of late.

Bottom line, I've never played at the level of 50% of NFL players. So I'm no scholar on what it takes to win in the NFL. What I do know is half of these guys are better than I ever could have been.

I say that to say this...

I don't think much separates the great ones from the average ones. Brady is only great because he has great to average players on his team. Moore/Garrard are average because they had average to crap players on their teams.

You can add Jack Sparrow, Y Bell, Captain Obvious, 41phish, to the list of aliases.

I want to be on JackSparrow Island. I see a different outcome for this team. We are so use to thinking this is our year that we've become accustomed to thinking it is our year.

We think we suck beyond suck. Its opposite season IMO. I think we win at least 8 games this season.

of course 41phish is an alias.obviously (no offendse captain) my mother did not name me 41phish.BUT I am not home or any of the other voices he hears. i will not cut anyone down or talk sh#t on this blog. only Dolphin football opinions.

IMO--There's just no way the Dolphins will make the playoffs in 2012. NE has added even more pieces on offense & I'd be willing to bet that they win the division again even if Brady gets hurt. The Jets are totally dysfunctional & the Bills are not there yet. If healthy our defense should be okay but our offense was ranked 20th in the league last year in points per game & that was with Marshall. Even if Ireland hits on a WR in the draft, rookies hardly ever put up Pro-Bowl caliber stats like Marshall did last year. I really think the WR Kendall Wright or even the TE Fleener from Stanford would make a nice fit but unless we trade down you can't take either player in the top 10.

As for the Wildcard, I just don't see us winning more than 8 games plus there's just too many teams that are ahead of us like the Ravens, the Steelers, the Texans, the Broncos, the Bengals, etc.

Is another losing season enough to fire Ireland??? Normally I'd think yes but if he wasn't fired by now who the hell knows....

This has been a more educational experience than those blogs we analyzed in Cuba. See if it is not so the we have graduated to Internet 102.

We Have Draft Picks

we do have a pretty easy schedule though.including 1 where I pray we kick the snot out of Jeff Fisher's Rams.i hope we can split in the division and maybe go 8-8 or 9-7.we are in rebuild mold. i also would like to see them take 2 west coast type wideouts along with the QB in the draft.

How dare you disagree with me?

(I think this is the part where call each other names).

Seriously though and to clarify, I wouldn't be against any of the remaining three QB. Just NOT in the 1st round. Preferably not the 2nd either in all honesty.

Me believeing Cousins to be the best of the rest, I'm hoping he's still there in the 3rd.

I have a Doctorate's degree in Medicine, those Canadians that write here have an equally solid education, Armando has a Technical degree, so, 41phish, who do you think you're trying to fool here? Internet belongs to the highly Educated.

Odin - I would prefer getting value out of the pick but I can see where if we don't take 1 of those guys at 8 we miss out on all 3.

Some draft sites have even started prognosticating that KC will trade with Jax and take Tannehill at 7. Now in the days of no rookie salary cap I woul dhave laughed at that. But not these days.

If I were able to have my way in the draft I would trade down and see how the draft falls. I may take 1 of those guys after the trade down or I may take Mercilus and wait til our 2nd pick to take a QB. It would all depend on hos the draft fell.

I hadn't posted in a while because I was hoping against logic to be proven wrong by some move or explanation which would rejuvenate my faith in our FO and team. It's really hard as a life long Fin fan through thick and thin to see the SAD state our once beloved flagship team has sunk to. I am usually one of the most HARDCORE DOLPHIN NAZI'S this time of year as most who post here feeling this next Yr. will see the swing that starts us back and for the 1st time in over 30 Yrs. I feel as if though the roof is caving before the draft!!

I know we still have to wait and see how the draft plays out but at this point with the amount of errors our incompetent ownership and FO have shown I find myself to be one of the YEE OF LITTLE FAITH. It isn't the Manning ordeal which I wasn't 100% committed to or the lack of effort at moving on RG3 who by the way the Skins swapped picks for in this draft along with their 2 plus a 1st Rounder in the 2013-14 drafts something I really would have considered. It really at this point goes beyond that.

It's the FACT I argued on here about Philbin NEVER calling any plays in GB down to missing on Harbaugh who would have come for the 7 Mil. he reportedly wanted. It's more about a VERY MEDIOCRE team being CAP STRAPPED while Denver, N.E. and a host of very competitive teams were or are all well under the CAP by as much as 25 Mil. Think about that for 1 Minute !!

These teams which are competitive today have the CAP space and Org. to swing it now while were stuck with the BOY WONDER. NO CAP space, NO IMPACT ADDITION, a 1st time NFL H.C. for the 6th time in a row with 4 bringing more ??'s than answers, 2 BAD FO's in a row led by arguably the 2 worst GM's in the entire NFL a complete futility in acquiring talent through FA or identifying in the draft. It all adds up to me being completely turned off by late April watching even Dr. Phil on NFL Net. take his shots at us reducing my Fins to a laughing stocks on all major Sports Networks. If I saw Ross or Ireland walking you would all know about it because my A SS would be going to Jail on Murder charges!!!

I dont think the Dolphins win 5 this year. Novice HC, new system, and no playmakers could spell a repeat of 1-15. Realistically I'd guess 3-4 wins.

You're a troll. I'm nobody but Captain Obvious but, thanks for playing!

I know fin4life, I will answer him. In any case, I have absolutely nothing to do until Monday, so I guess I will help Armando to pick out trolls.

i flunked out of 2 of the best high schools in NY brother. look em up:St Francis Prep and Holy Cross.i was too interested in the noble weed. all those religion classes payed off though.i went to miramar high for 1 year and had 2 classes;dct and mass media.i was out by 10am. the mass media teacher once played the beatles white album and then opened the floor for discussion. fortunately their was no one in the class pretending to be anyone they weren't

There are college teams with more talent then the Dullfins.

If I saw Ross or Ireland walking you would all know about it because my A SS would be going to Jail on Murder charges!!!

I knew that was you posting before I even saw the name-LOL! Wow!

I'd be right there with you on a conspiracy to commit murder charge.

You and I have been two of most optimistic homers here. It's getting tough. I can't even dream up a scenario in which Ireland restores my faith.

I see a backlash coming from free agency and these protests. I think it's going to cause Ireland to try to hard. I see him really trying to get too cute now and screwing up the draft COMPLETELY!

I hope I'm wrong. I hope I have to eat my words. BUT, at the moment, Ireland instills no type of confidence in any way, shape, or form.

I dont know why some of you guys bother with the mindless kool-aid homers. Just ignore them.

You can add, Homer, the blog idiot and U R A Troll to the list of aliases. Anybody here that smells Home's writing, write the alias out.

We're just provoking them, Bill. Just playing with them.

The confidence in Ireland is at an all time low. What I didn't know was there was a place that low. :)

I just read a poll on another paper that asks your vote in grading the off season so far. I said "F" and so did 75%.

I hope Ireland has the best draft of his life and proves us all wrong because I love the Dolphins no matter what he does.

My opinion of Ireland would change if we pulled off a trade down and got another 2 round, then Floyd 1st pick, McLellan 2nd pick and Cousins 3rd pick but also in 2nd round. I could live with that.

And then AJ Jenkins later in the draft. :)

Kris, DC, Mark in Toronto, Craig M, blog fodder, odin, phins78, Texas, Clue, Draft Picks......and any of the other regulars I may have missed.....

Check out the new blog. Got it started. If it gets crazy in here might be nice to have a space for normal conversation.

Thanks for the info bud. I'll do my best to make it over there. You're one of the few I enjoy exchanging ideas with on here and I've never seen you lose it on anyone on here....so hats off to you.

Hoepfully we'll be able to keep the trolls out...

That's funny Ohio - I did the same thing because of how crazy it gets in here.

The site is: nfldraftfan.com

I should be able to handle trolls with admin rights :)

I just did a forum site instead of a blog though. I wanted people to have the freedom to write about football but be able to start their own topics. Then let the rest of us beat that topic to death.

thanks for the heads up.

Ohio, I posted in your blog, no one's there though.

Got it clue.....it made me approve your first post. Hopefully you should be able to post without my approval from this point forward. At least I think that's how I set it up. :)

hey regulars

You hear that song playing in your heads?
it's Paranoid by Black Sabbath.
when you get to your exclusive web site don't forget to create a secrect handshake.
the internet isn't for the intelligent, it's for douche bags with nothin better to do.

I guess I'll get to feel the hate being a blog admin just like Armando. :)

It's all good

I am conservative by Nature, and much more conservative by experience. We'll see.

Ohio - I started my site a couple weeks ago but just started telling people about it today. I figured it could be a good place to talk about the Dolphins but also the nfl draft.

I have every conference listed as categories and then the teams within those. Under teams people can create there own topic.

And I also have the Mando power. :)

I will continue to post here adult Dolphins humor, Home. So don''t worry.

My blog is in no way supposed to go up against Armando. I will still be posting in here too!

But when there is a long time inbetween his posts and the crazys come out in here, I thought it may be a nice place to get away from the spam.

We shall see

god you regulars are stupid.

Texas, you have to cut that crap of registering, then maybe more people will post to your blog.

I haven't tried the Smelt eggs.....YET!

People up here fry em up all the time. You have to get the eggs out without breaking the sack to do it.

I'm usually to drunk and hungry for all that. I take em right out of the river, clean them Ozzy style and throw em on the Burner!

Posted by: odinseye | March 23, 2012 at 02:11 PM
Man they're good. Make my own style sushi....no rice just fish wrapped in seaweed. Those shushi joints are rip offs! Like 90% rice...cheapest foodstuff known to man.
Anyway, smelt eggs are great. Eat 'em with a big spoon just by themselves sometimes.

Clue - all that is needed is just e-mail to register. Nothing else. I figure it is the same as posting here.

Guest can read all they want, just need to register to post.

Texas, it will be interesting between you and Ohio to see who can get the most guys from here to posts on both of your blogs

The draft can't get here fast enough!!!

Maybe both, Clue. Texas' is a Forum(means debate), Ohio's is a Blog(means opinions).

go fins!

Drew Stanton to the Colts.

Between Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland, and Tony Sparano, Somewhere lies the truth why going into the 5th year of rebuilding underneath the guiding hand of rebuilding. A dispode BP, disposed TS, and remainging JI later.

We're coming off a 6-10 season(could have been worse) with a disposed Brandon Marshall(pro bowl and pro bowl mvp, #1 wr) and a new hc staff. Possibly beginning a "new rebuilding proccess.

When this book of truth comes out. It's certain to be a best seller in Miami and amongst dolfans! LOL

Luck proves his greatness with a brilliant Pro Day performance

RGIII had a better pro day. I just googled Andrew Luck Pro Day. Everyone is talking about how good he looked but no one is comparing his pro day to RGIII's pro day.

Ireland doesnt give a crap about the players, coaches, fans, or media. The only thing he cares about is keeping his job and sucking up to his boss. We as fans have to get him out of Miami in order to restore a competitive team and a professional reputation with players and coaches and fans throughout the league and especially FA’s.

Protests are fine but the best way to get him out is to hit Ross in the pocketbook. Boycott the games and anything Dolphin. Try not to even watch them on TV. Ross will eventually get the message that Ireland is the cancer on the Dolphins and will fire him. Friends dont let friends buy Dolphin tickets.

No one expected any "new developments" concerning Luck nor RG#. They only comfirmed thier status as being billed as expected. B-O-R-I-N-G................ LOL

Greg@ 5:22 PM,

Why dont you just report the "sky is blue". Duhhhhhhhhhh... Dolfans will do that anyway. Guess what, they didnt even need you to suggest it. LOL

I am in no competition with anyone. Professor Lou also has a site. His is a blog also like Ohio. My site is forum based. I am lazy and didn't want to write a complete blog. I prefer throwing a topic out and then beating it to death with other folks.:)

So Ross is demanding of Ireland that he gets him a Franchise QB? Well, there are no Qb's available that fit that description and that we can afford. So, tough shiit.

When you first comment on my blog I have to approve your first time......but then from then forward you can comment freely without my permission. It's a built in thing I guess.......

Up to 60 page views in my first hour! Thanks everyone

Exactly why Bill Parcells himself even admit it may heve been the wrong decision to take Long over Ryan. Jake Long's great. Its just that you dont get very many opportunities to draft a franchise calibre qb.

You can by with a very good LT, but most times you need a very good qb just to be a wildcard playoff team. Let a alone a franchise calibre qb.
