So where is the Jake Long contract extension?

Jake Long is in the final year of a contract that seemed oh-so-expensive in 2008 when he signed as the first overall draft pick but has been well worth the money to date. Long is scheduled to make $11.2 million in his contract year and cost upwards of $12.8 million against the cap.

The base salary is basically the cost of doing business. The cap charge seems like a case of business that could be done better.

The fact is the Dolphins need to extend Long's deal. He has been a good player. He is a foundation stone for the franchise. And an extension could easily lower that cap charge and give the team more space to maneuver as it wishes in the coming days of the 2012 league year.

Yet, off Long went on his honeymoon recently and the Dolphins didn't have a new contract ready for him as a wedding gift.

Ah, the why is a puzzle.

The club's official stance is that Long without doubt is not going anywhere, that he is outstanding and that he absolutely will not be allowed to hit free agency at the end of 2012 so that he can possibly go elsewhere.

Good call, Dolphins folks!

So why the delay when an extension could be beneficial for both sides? Well the possibilities are the puzzle.

Maybe both sides have a wink-wink agreement that something will get done and it will. Great, but time is money and the longer this is on the back burner, the weaker the Dolphins seem from a cap standpoint.

Maybe both sides have talked and they simply haven't come to an agreement. This is probably the most likely scenario. The truth is gauging Long's value won't be easy. Cleveland re-signed Joe Thomas to an 8-year contract worth a reported $92 million that included a whopping $44 million in guaranteed money. That's an $11.5 million annual average. And the trouble for the Dolphins is Long will expect to exceed this deal by a significant amount.

Worth it? Obviously yes at first blush. But look deeper. Long is worth is if he's healthy. Long is worth it if the club last season judged his play to be as good as ever -- unlikely considering his rash of injuries. Long, in short, is worth it if the Dolphins believe him to be Jonathan Ogden or Walter Jones -- both of whom played for years at exceedingly high levels and without injuries.

But what if Long is Tony Boselli? Boselli was perhaps the best left tackle in the game early in his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Big, strong, mobile, he was Long before Long. But then he injured a knee. Then he injured an ankle. Then he hurt his shoulder. And then he hurt the shoulder again. And again.

And by his seventh NFL season, Boselli was broken. Folks were surprised when Boselli was placed on the expansion list and allowed to go to Houston. But when he arrived in Houston, injured and unable to contribute, everyone understood.

So is Long on the road to being Boselli? In the past two years he's had a building litany of injuries -- first a knee, then an ankle and shoulder and last year a back and a torn right biceps that forced him to finish the season on injured reserve.

Are the Dolphins worried the trend might continue? Even privately there is confidence Long will recover and continue to be a pillar of the offensive line. But I would imagine the club would nonetheless like to protect itself financially against the continuation of the recent trend.

Perhaps the club prefers to see how Long returns and is handling training camp and the early part of the season before committing to a new contract.

That would be smart. Of course, in the meantime, that significant cap hit glows in neon as needing to be addressed. It is a catch-22. Pay Long and gamble he'll be fine? Or delay a new contract and suffer the tightened cap space?

There is, of course, another scenario that might explain the lack of a new contract for Long. It is obvious this is a big-ticket item. It will cost a lot of dollars. What if owner Stephen Ross, smarting from tanking ticket sales, simply isn't in position to dole out $40-$50 million in guaranteed money right now, much of which would no doubt come in the form of a hefty signing bonus?

What if the Dolphins -- among the bottom five spenders in cash outlay a year ago -- are simply trying to hold down costs again?

These are all questions the Dolphins don't have to answer. But it would clear things up if they did.

Those are old-schoolers(BP, others), YG. I guess they didn't realize how valuable is a QB under the new rules.

Over the past 4yrs, even up this present one, what's done is done and can not be changed. Even a new gm right now means predominantly gutting the team.

Think about it. A new gm wants the chance to build with his own players and own football philosophies. He doesnt want to be in jeapardy of losing his job in the near future with a foundation that got the last gm and hc fired.

The two greatest problems with a new gm is:

1. Again starting over from nearly scratch

2. No guarrantees anything will be better.

Even changes gm's right now has a very high propensity for just more of the same. Whether Ireland goes or stays depends on how his 2011 rookie crop performs this season and how his 2012 rookie crop looks this sweason. Ireland's in the last year of his contract and extension is based on these two things.

Shula never missed a beat. For most of his career, he belonged to the Rules committe. Heh, heh.

We all have to get over it. Don Shula aint walking thru that door! LOL

Don Shula was one helluva nice 30yr ride! There hasnt been a nfl hc in nfl history so consistenly successful for such a consistent length of time. LOL

Shula, only one losing season with the Dolphins(6-8). Only two .500 seasons(8-8, 7-7).

And we were ready to run him out because it appeared we couldnt get to anymore super bowls. Boy were those the days. Boy were we spoiled idiots. Its just a lot easier to see that now! LOL

Never imagined being a dolfan, when there would be a day we craved just to become .500! LOL

When did BP walk out? early 2009? Nothing Ireland could do about that Season. Then came the fiasco with Harbaugh and it was decided to bring TS for at least 1 more Season. This year, he(yes, he, Ross only signed off on his choices) has brought in a lot of good Coaches. It is way too early to judge Ireland on his skills. Sorry, you resentful Black and White People, but that is the Truth, Ruth,

Enuff for me. I've blown my wad for today. Im out. Have a great day guys! LOL

Oscar @ 6:04 PM,

Being pissed with Shula for not getting back to a super bowl with Marino. Now looks like the super spoiled rich kid pissed because his Grey Poupon wasnt fresh from a 2minute old factory batch. LOL

Heck, if these scrubs ever go 8-8 again they'll throw a parade...

"but our offense was ranked 20th in the league last year in points per game & that was with Marshall."

I know WHDP, can you imagine if we had a receiver that didn't drop 7 TD passes? We might have had a winning record. :)

So 41phish heh? what was your name this morning? or yesterday? Day before that? I hope you don't think anyone is buying your new character.

Unsolicited advice here for ya phish41. If you're going to continue changing your name and acting like no one will be able to tell, you might want to change your writing style with each new name. One of your personas can talk in caps, one can misspell everything, one can scream and yell the whole time, one can be the nice guy,,,,,,oh wait, you've already been doing that. Carry on kid.

Phins78 is right.

This seems like the new drugs the med-reps try to push on me. I tell them, "the more options the better".

Better, ALoco, the negative Dolphin.

Heh, competition is always good.

Some info from Ross courtesy of Sun-Sentinel/pft-

The man with not much of a P.R. plan has designed to empower an angry fan base by acknowledging that he’s paying attention.

Who said the only circus is in New York?

But far bigger than the news that, according to Izzy Gould of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross actually called a disgruntled fan to explain the franchise’s haphazard offseason is the disclosure that Ross told 20-year season-ticket holder Jason Lawrence that the team would have cut receiver Brandon Marshall if a trade to the Bears hadn’t been arranged.

“[Ross] said they had been shopping [Marshall] for a couple weeks,” Lawrence told Gould. “Nobody would return their phone calls about getting him. If Chicago didn’t take [Marshall] . . . they would have ended up cutting him very shortly after that, and got nothing.”

Ross also told Lawrence that the Dolphins could have had quarterback Matt Flynn if they really wanted him, and that quarterback Tim Tebow didn’t fit the team’s offense.

To the former point: Duh. To the latter: Double duh.

Of course Tebow doesn’t fit the Miami offense. He doesn’t fit any offense. He’s a talent around whom you build an offense. As to Flynn, why did they bring him to town if they didn’t want him? Was new head coach Joe Philbin hoping to pick up some additional tidbit during Flynn’s visit that Philbin hadn’t gleaned during, you know, four years together in Green Bay?

As to the other quarterbacks linked to Miami this offseason, Ross said that Peyton Manning “wasn’t comfortable” with the Dolphins, and that the team didn’t want to pay Alex Smith $8 million per year in the event that Matt Moore won the starting job.

If Matt Moore is the starter again, look for Ross to be making a lot more phone calls to unhappy fans.

Brandon Weeden FTW

I'm usually to drunk and hungry for all that. I take em right out of the river, clean them Ozzy style and throw em on the Burner!

"Have The Dolphin's Beached Themselves?"

They possess Dolphins season tickets. And Dolphins tattoos, bullhorns and angry clenched fists. Over 300 passionate yet disgruntled phin fans will assemble outside the Dolphins’ offices and training facility in Davie and voice their displeasure with the franchise.

Most of the anger will be targeted at the bumbling racist Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland, the last man standing from the failed & departed Bill Parcells regime. The group which will eventually take Ireland down will again be brandishing signs screaming “FIreland,” “Fire Island, Save Our Team” and “Toot to Give Ireland The Boot.”

Miami Dolphins official radio station is sponsoring the organized event with "Goldie" & "Koop" of WQAM pledging free large pizzas to all the protesters who are, "fed up and wont take it anymore."

3.29.12 again the protesters will be out in force across from Ireland's office and demand answers from management on the meltdown in Miami of the once proud franchise.

The Miami Dolphins have become the laughing stock of the NFL on all national media and accused racist GM Jeff Ireland needs to be held accountable for the destruction of the Dolphins.

Protest March 3.29.12

Sun Sentinel

9:54 p.m. EDT, March 23, 2012

The fan protest at Miami Dolphins headquarters on Tuesday created a ground swell powerful enough to reach the top of the embattled franchise and much more powerful than Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald could have ever imagined.

This thing is going Viral and clearly has caught the attention of Dolphin owner Steven Ross.

Team owner Steve Ross reached out to at least one of those upset fans Thursday night, calling protester Jason Lawrence, a Dolphins' season ticket holder for more than 20 years.

Ross had his excuse script ready to defend his down in the dumps franchise.

Among the topics Lawrence said the two discussed during the 27-minute call: The Dolphins would have cut Brandon Marshall if they had not traded him; the Dolphins could have had Matt Flynn if they really wanted him; and Tim Tebow was not a good fit for Miami's offense.

Dolphins CEO Mike Dee arranged the call, which a team spokesman confirmed took place. Lawrence was interviewed Tuesday by the Sun Sentinel along with soon to be about 300 others outside the team's Davie training complex on 3.29.12

Clearly the Occupy Davie movement sponsored by WQAM of Miami is making a national impact.

cut and paste, hey look everyone he can do it

By the time Fins are relevant, Long will be done anyway. Trade him now and get some value..He doesn't have anyone to protect anyway...Like paying for security on an empty house.

March 24, 2012 at 7:54 am

Ross is in full on spin mode. If Marshall was so unwanted, Chicago wouldn’t have given up ANYTHING because they would’ve known he was being shopped and that they had zero competition for him. Stupid comment, don’t believe it at all.

So Chicago gives up 2 draft picks for a player was Miami was desperate to trade and was on the verge of cutting. Doesn’t add up. Chicago knew we were desperate, they could’ve had Marshall for free, why trade for him and that mega deal?
March 24, 2012 at 8:02 am

Ross’ comments are most offensive to the Bears GM, who will now become another Miami bashed for sure, because just called him an idiot indirectly.

“We pulled a fast one on that stupid Bears GM because we were going to cut Marshall after not finding any takers, but then that idiot offered us two picks and we took it.”

How well are Ross’ comments going to sit with the rest of the league: players coaches, management, and ownership. This guy just called out the Bears GM as incompetent for trading 2 picks for Marshall who supposedly no one else wanted and was about to be cut.
