So where is the Jake Long contract extension?

Jake Long is in the final year of a contract that seemed oh-so-expensive in 2008 when he signed as the first overall draft pick but has been well worth the money to date. Long is scheduled to make $11.2 million in his contract year and cost upwards of $12.8 million against the cap.

The base salary is basically the cost of doing business. The cap charge seems like a case of business that could be done better.

The fact is the Dolphins need to extend Long's deal. He has been a good player. He is a foundation stone for the franchise. And an extension could easily lower that cap charge and give the team more space to maneuver as it wishes in the coming days of the 2012 league year.

Yet, off Long went on his honeymoon recently and the Dolphins didn't have a new contract ready for him as a wedding gift.

Why?

Ah, the why is a puzzle.

The club's official stance is that Long without doubt is not going anywhere, that he is outstanding and that he absolutely will not be allowed to hit free agency at the end of 2012 so that he can possibly go elsewhere.

Good call, Dolphins folks!

So why the delay when an extension could be beneficial for both sides? Well the possibilities are the puzzle.

Maybe both sides have a wink-wink agreement that something will get done and it will. Great, but time is money and the longer this is on the back burner, the weaker the Dolphins seem from a cap standpoint.

Maybe both sides have talked and they simply haven't come to an agreement. This is probably the most likely scenario. The truth is gauging Long's value won't be easy. Cleveland re-signed Joe Thomas to an 8-year contract worth a reported $92 million that included a whopping $44 million in guaranteed money. That's an $11.5 million annual average. And the trouble for the Dolphins is Long will expect to exceed this deal by a significant amount.

Worth it? Obviously yes at first blush. But look deeper. Long is worth is if he's healthy. Long is worth it if the club last season judged his play to be as good as ever -- unlikely considering his rash of injuries. Long, in short, is worth it if the Dolphins believe him to be Jonathan Ogden or Walter Jones -- both of whom played for years at exceedingly high levels and without injuries.

But what if Long is Tony Boselli? Boselli was perhaps the best left tackle in the game early in his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Big, strong, mobile, he was Long before Long. But then he injured a knee. Then he injured an ankle. Then he hurt his shoulder. And then he hurt the shoulder again. And again.

And by his seventh NFL season, Boselli was broken. Folks were surprised when Boselli was placed on the expansion list and allowed to go to Houston. But when he arrived in Houston, injured and unable to contribute, everyone understood.

So is Long on the road to being Boselli? In the past two years he's had a building litany of injuries -- first a knee, then an ankle and shoulder and last year a back and a torn right biceps that forced him to finish the season on injured reserve.

Are the Dolphins worried the trend might continue? Even privately there is confidence Long will recover and continue to be a pillar of the offensive line. But I would imagine the club would nonetheless like to protect itself financially against the continuation of the recent trend.

Perhaps the club prefers to see how Long returns and is handling training camp and the early part of the season before committing to a new contract.

That would be smart. Of course, in the meantime, that significant cap hit glows in neon as needing to be addressed. It is a catch-22. Pay Long and gamble he'll be fine? Or delay a new contract and suffer the tightened cap space?

There is, of course, another scenario that might explain the lack of a new contract for Long. It is obvious this is a big-ticket item. It will cost a lot of dollars. What if owner Stephen Ross, smarting from tanking ticket sales, simply isn't in position to dole out $40-$50 million in guaranteed money right now, much of which would no doubt come in the form of a hefty signing bonus?

What if the Dolphins -- among the bottom five spenders in cash outlay a year ago -- are simply trying to hold down costs again?

These are all questions the Dolphins don't have to answer. But it would clear things up if they did.

The Dolphins need to be bold is this draft! Trading up or down! Tannehil is a wasted pick anywhere in this draft. They need to work on the other pieces.

"In 2009 Bell received a Pro Bowl selection after Antoine Bethea and the Indianapolis Colts went to the Super Bowl."

LOL!!! He got in after someone else went to the superbowl. Bell is not that good. He is average just like all the other players on this team are average.

IDK, I'd rather have a high priced probowl OL than a high priced probowl QB.

Protection behind the line is fundamental. Even I can run through holes and pass if the OL is Elite.

I just sold myself. We need to draft Reiff at #8. Nothing between 3 and 32 helps us in the long run. Tannehill is to high to draft at #8.

If we CAN'T get Reiff at #8 then trade down for draft picks. Then the dice are being rolled at that point. I'm not convinced Ireland is a draft guru but even he can't pick losers all the time.

This new CBA changes the money. I can franchise a guy and pay less than what he is actually worth.

Think about this. You got Long and Reiff protecting the 13th best QB in 2010? Or if its Moore, the 12th best QB in the league?

This one time I would not be upset if Ireland drafted OL.

Bell is talking of re-signing at a lower price w/ Miami. Ireland bashers - suck one.

Manning sat behind a probowl Oline for years. I can't wait until he gets introduced to the real world.

Bell should re due his contract. He is not that good. His open market value is not that high. His stats suggest he is not that good.

One thing I believe, like it or not, Ireland is a better GM than all the bloggers combined. There may be an occasional sensible idea on the blog, but for the most part we are all quite ignorant not only in player evaluation but in the business side of things.

I'll bet if Ireland explained all his decisions that you didn't like, you'd probably understand and accept the reasoning behind them more often than not.

Not easy being Ireland. Michael Floyd could be another Megatron, but he does not fit the scheme Pihlbin wants to run. Oh, well...

I'm sort of in agreement Jack.

Unless the trade up for Blackmon or down for Tannehill. Noone else really rocks my world at #8.
(Clevelands 2nd #1 at 22 would be a good trade down candidate)

I not sold on Coples or Ingram at the #8 spot.

I'm kind of enamored with DE Whitney Mercilus but he's projected lower in rd 1.

Jeff should target Dansby next. He getting paid for nothing. Lots of money can be freed up if we got rid of Dansby. He is another one that's not that good.

London Fletcher was the #1 defensive player in the league based on tackles. Dansby was 31st. Dansby was tied with Jason McCourty a CB. Who is McCourty?!?!?!?

27 behind Pat Angerer. Who is Pat Angerer?!?!?!?!?

I can't speak for all but I'm not entirely an Ireland basher.

I'm just saying all those people talking rebuild. Ireland is going into season #5. Beep a rebuild. It's time to sh## or got off the pot. This year!!!

What's Ierland's idea of honestly in a relationship?
Telling you his real name.

Maybe not tackles, but if I remember correctly Dansby was all over the field last year.

These are business men, pal. They don't give 2 craps about relationships and such.

Agreed on the draft Jack but disagree on Dansby. He's a very good LBer.

I'm not sure what happened with our D in the 1st half of the season last year other than it took Burrnett awhile to learn to call the plays taking over for Crowder.

They all played much better in the 2nd half of the season. I was even impressed with Odricks play in the second half.

The
o-line is more important than half of the uneducated fools writing tonight know. If you think you only need a QB, running back and a wide receiver to succeed in football then follow a diff sport. No O-line means no offense, period. Football takes 11 players for any play to successfully work and it starts up front..Just ask anyone who tried to run a sweep or go off tackle. Before the ball can be thrown down field, protection is needed. Get some education before you comment on something.

When you have a change every year in HC or OC or DC or STC like we have had, you can't expect to build a winner. It's not all Irelands fault. He didn't pick any of them.

keep building the defense. worry about qb and offense next year

All GM's make mistakes and miss on picks, it happens. I'd say the two glaring problems of the Parcells regime were first and foremost choosing Sparano, and secondly, not cutting their losses sooner with Henne. They had too much faith in him and gave him too much time. Those two things have been the root of most of our problems.

Clyde,

I don't believe Parcell's ever truly had his heart in it.

He just took his 14 million bucks and rode his fat arse off into the sunset.

BTW. Sparano is really gonna get his Wildcat jollies off with Tebow.

Scary part is it could work.

parcells is garbage, glad he was kept out of the hof

rick wildcat doesnt work, tebow is slower than u. i look forward to sparano destroying the jets offense and sanchez confidence

Ireland doesnt give a crap about the players, coaches, fan, or media. The only thing he cares about is keeping his job and sucking up to his boss. We as fans have to get him out of Miami in order to restore a competitive team and a professional reputation with players and coaches and fans throughout the league and especially FA's.

Protests are fine but the best way to get him out is to hit Ross in the pocketbook. Boycott the games and anything Dolphin. Try not to even watch them on TV. Ross will eventually get the message that Ireland is the cancer on the Dolphins and will fire him. Friends dont let friends buy Dolphin tickets.

The front office does the exact opposite of what you tell them to do so please...please...please trade long and keep Ireland.

paying that much for a tackle period is redonkulous....injured or healthy one tackle alone doesn't win championships..

Occupy Davie you and those 29 idiots are going to waste your time protesting again? Thanks for telling us when and where. Better bring some rain gear and a shield because I'm going to have a blast that day driving by and hurling everything imaginable at you idiots. I'm telling all of my friends who hate the fins as well. I'm sure they would love to pelt dolphins fans with milk shakes. Hear that everyone? 3/29/12 is the day! If you're sick of these trailer park trash losers making the entire fan base look like jerkovvs join me and my friends on march 29. Either drive by and throw garbage at them or stand across the street with me and protest their protest in the name of sanity. It's going to be a great day, byob. See you then. I'll be back every day to remind everyone.

Just throw wendys frosts at em' LOL them freakin traders!
Go to Ny losers

Trade Long for a 1st and a 2nd for next year.....

12 teams make the playoffs....and they're fans talk about their franchise QB.....NOT they're pro-bowl LT.....

not defending ross or ireland but this team has been making bad decisions for the last 12 seasons...dave wannstedt destroyed the bears when he coached up there but jimmie johnson convinced hyzengua to bring him in and then he destroyed the dolphins along with our past GM...the dolphins have always had components, solid Defense, good RB's, decent WR, but the thing we have always lacked is a QB...the fiedlers, henne's, beck's, and all those other guys had one thing in common...when it came down to driving down the field in the 4th quarter with 2 mints left or we needed them to make the big play to win they choked every time...matt moore might have had a solid season last year but he's another henne...garrad is back up material and nothing more...12 going on 13 seasons without a qb is enough

2-14 AT BEST this year.

No QB. No WR. No RT. No DE that can get sacks. No starting caliber CB. No Safeties.

WE SUCK.

FIST PUMP

Frustrated fans are reduced to cheering for LTs......

while playoff teams are talking about FRANCISE QBs, DIVA WRs, and DYNAMIC RBs......

guess witch one we FIN FANS are discussing......

Learn how to spell you 9th grade educated loser .. it WHICH not WITCH..yeah your from NY alright! you couldnt run this team .. quit acting like it ... Jeff Ireland is way better than 20 of the other teams GMs ..He is a top 10 GM .. get lost ... real fans talk about every position!

now you went and hurt my feeling Jeff....whatever am I going to do.....

witch...WICH....

WITCH...WICH

WICH....witch

and so on and so forth......

can we be friends now??????

@Kris >>> your nothing but a troll and a fairweathered fan! we dont need you! we are building a new culture around here ... not only with the team . but we need to get rid of some of you so called fans as well.
A new Team from top to bottom ... we need to cut some of you fans Mostly fans like you or trade you to NY for some sewage or something cause that crap is way better than listening to you know it all fans that really dont know crap about football .. go find another team if you would PLEASE!!!

I guess Jeff wasn't expecting that reaction....

Keep looking in the TROLL handbook Jeff...I'm sure you got something better that to get me all riled up......

Jeff @ 9:19.....

please try harder.....you cuting me as a fan is really laughable....are you one of those guys who is funny without even trying...or did you really post that as a joke...

in either case...its got me rolling..I needed that...funny stuff.....

and I thought that the troll was suppose to use regular posters AS AMUSEMENT.....

"it must be fun"

Listen here if you dont like the way things are going with the dolphins go find another team cause your wasting your time trying to get Jeff Ireland Fired on this Blog LOL .. like the owner reads the comment section of the blog ..LOL your a idiot!! get lost!

Thank God for the fans who protested and FORCED Ireland to hold a press conference.
Drafting an O lineman #8 would be a waste. U already have 2 1st rounders and u still tied a franchise record for the most sacks allowed. Colombo will not be playing, we'll be fine.
NFL network was showing all the Int's from Matt Moore, we have serious problems with him. Good thing the new offence is easier. But Garrad could beat him out.
I cant wait for the draft! We need at least 2 WR's.

build the defense

Booorrrring.....Jeff....VERY BORING.....

your act got old quick......since you got nothing of value (or entertaining) to add....

guess I will ignore you.....

please study the TROLL handbook.....i expect better from you next time address me....regardless of WICH screen name you will be using....

Good Day Sir!

its "offense" not "offence" man yall are dumb

LOL you have a Troll handbook... no wonder your comment are suck ash... GET LOST TROLL!

2-14!
1-15!

bad part is miami has a weak schedule, so we will waste it with a bad team. guessing 5-11 or somewhere around there, not bad enough to get a barkley. but draft could def change things this year

Unless Ireland pulls of the BLOCK BUSTER deal of the Millenium....we won't be getting a QB that we believe....or even the FO believes will become a star...I don't think we draft one in the 1st rd.....@ least I hope not.....

Garrard had a good run a few years back...maybe he can captture the magic again for a season or two.....

I STILL think the most likely scenario for us to get OUR QB.....is that he falls to us after we are a playoff team.....like Rodgers...or Marino....yes....we will have to get lucky....but it has happened before....

Until then...we just gotta build the team....

Kris, jcb, and TONY SPARANO LOVES FIELD GOALS are all the same TROLL ... listen up bloggers somebody ban this fool! and this is the only name i use ... get use to it TROLL!

Copy .... cat.... using a bunch of periods like i do .. man your a troll

we are gonna build through the draft so everybody .... relax ... we dont need a overrated W/r ... there are so many gr8 w/r's in thissdraft no need to draft one early i think maybe Joe will get W/r's somewhere between rounds 3 thru 5 ... Joe Philbin is gonna stick to his plan and Build the team he wants not the one you want or I WANT.... just wait and let the season pan out .. you just might end up being surprised

joe,lol like joe has any say in the draft. hilarious

I'd put Long at QB !!!

« 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ... 16 17 »
