So where is the Jake Long contract extension?

Jake Long is in the final year of a contract that seemed oh-so-expensive in 2008 when he signed as the first overall draft pick but has been well worth the money to date. Long is scheduled to make $11.2 million in his contract year and cost upwards of $12.8 million against the cap.

The base salary is basically the cost of doing business. The cap charge seems like a case of business that could be done better.

The fact is the Dolphins need to extend Long's deal. He has been a good player. He is a foundation stone for the franchise. And an extension could easily lower that cap charge and give the team more space to maneuver as it wishes in the coming days of the 2012 league year.

Yet, off Long went on his honeymoon recently and the Dolphins didn't have a new contract ready for him as a wedding gift.

Why?

Ah, the why is a puzzle.

The club's official stance is that Long without doubt is not going anywhere, that he is outstanding and that he absolutely will not be allowed to hit free agency at the end of 2012 so that he can possibly go elsewhere.

Good call, Dolphins folks!

So why the delay when an extension could be beneficial for both sides? Well the possibilities are the puzzle.

Maybe both sides have a wink-wink agreement that something will get done and it will. Great, but time is money and the longer this is on the back burner, the weaker the Dolphins seem from a cap standpoint.

Maybe both sides have talked and they simply haven't come to an agreement. This is probably the most likely scenario. The truth is gauging Long's value won't be easy. Cleveland re-signed Joe Thomas to an 8-year contract worth a reported $92 million that included a whopping $44 million in guaranteed money. That's an $11.5 million annual average. And the trouble for the Dolphins is Long will expect to exceed this deal by a significant amount.

Worth it? Obviously yes at first blush. But look deeper. Long is worth is if he's healthy. Long is worth it if the club last season judged his play to be as good as ever -- unlikely considering his rash of injuries. Long, in short, is worth it if the Dolphins believe him to be Jonathan Ogden or Walter Jones -- both of whom played for years at exceedingly high levels and without injuries.

But what if Long is Tony Boselli? Boselli was perhaps the best left tackle in the game early in his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Big, strong, mobile, he was Long before Long. But then he injured a knee. Then he injured an ankle. Then he hurt his shoulder. And then he hurt the shoulder again. And again.

And by his seventh NFL season, Boselli was broken. Folks were surprised when Boselli was placed on the expansion list and allowed to go to Houston. But when he arrived in Houston, injured and unable to contribute, everyone understood.

So is Long on the road to being Boselli? In the past two years he's had a building litany of injuries -- first a knee, then an ankle and shoulder and last year a back and a torn right biceps that forced him to finish the season on injured reserve.

Are the Dolphins worried the trend might continue? Even privately there is confidence Long will recover and continue to be a pillar of the offensive line. But I would imagine the club would nonetheless like to protect itself financially against the continuation of the recent trend.

Perhaps the club prefers to see how Long returns and is handling training camp and the early part of the season before committing to a new contract.

That would be smart. Of course, in the meantime, that significant cap hit glows in neon as needing to be addressed. It is a catch-22. Pay Long and gamble he'll be fine? Or delay a new contract and suffer the tightened cap space?

There is, of course, another scenario that might explain the lack of a new contract for Long. It is obvious this is a big-ticket item. It will cost a lot of dollars. What if owner Stephen Ross, smarting from tanking ticket sales, simply isn't in position to dole out $40-$50 million in guaranteed money right now, much of which would no doubt come in the form of a hefty signing bonus?

What if the Dolphins -- among the bottom five spenders in cash outlay a year ago -- are simply trying to hold down costs again?

These are all questions the Dolphins don't have to answer. But it would clear things up if they did.

Jeff row, don't tell me that unless ur being a smartass. This team CAN'T build from the draft. Name one player of any value we've gotten third round on??!?? Thank u Ireland. So just stop. Not to mention odrick and misi are working out so great.
What's worrying me are the ticket sales.....they are way too many! We need a stronger voice in the only language Ireland and Ross understand. You're unhappy they are killing the team, promising stars and giving the opposite?? They. Don't. Care.

Armando....

I don't know if Long is Boselli...but i do know his job can be done by aa lesser man-mountain......

We rarely get value for our talent....while we routinely OVER PAY for another teams talent.....

No player should be considered off-limits.....If I was Jeff Ireland...I would have unloaded him last year for 2 1st rd picks......if his value allowed that...

This year...i say trade him for what he is worth....maybe a 1st and a 3rd.....

its "offense" not "offence" man yall are dumb

Posted by: Jeff Row | March 22, 2012 at 09:40 PM

uh..."y'all" has an apostrophe between the y and the a.

LOL you have a Troll handbook... no wonder your comment are suck ash... GET LOST TROLL!

Posted by: Jeff Row | March 22, 2012 at 09:44 PM

uh...I believe the word "comment" should be plural in this case i.e. commentS.

I take back the statment of routinely overpaying.....

We didn't Attempt to over pay for Manning....

we didn't over pay for Orton...Flynn...or Bush (and we got him)....we kept Solia @ a good price.....and we didn't enter the KOLB sweepstakes....

so after a rough start.....either Ross or Ireland began to understand the value of players....

thats a start....

kris no team would ever give up 2 first rounders for long, this year or last

washington gave up 2 first rounders for a franchise qb and idiots in here acted like they were dumb

@inimounts >>> your right they dont care what you think No team In the Nfl cares what the fans think! they do what they want to do... everybody wanted Saprano fired! well guess what we got what we wanted know we have to start over.. Joe Philbin doesnt want tonys team .. he want to build his own team It's going to be a westcoast offense and B. marshall doesnt fit! he obviously didnt want flynn that bad cause he didnt think he was worth the asking price .. quit getting upset over guys that you want not coming to the team. CAUSE YOUR RIGHT THEY DONT CARE WHAT YOU THINK .. AND ANY GM OR OWNER YOU GET IS GOING TO FEEL THE SAME WAY !

Give it up Dolfans. It aint happening in Miami for a loooonng time.

@Kris your wrong we tried to over pay for manning They wanted him .. but guess what it didnt matter cause he didnt want to come here

Now when Ireland learns the value of dumping players @ the right time.....and I don't mean cutting them...i mean trades....one that work out in our favor........

when he gets that down...man....then we will be ready to roll.....

This won't be popular.....

but WAKE is a prime example of what I am talking about....Wake is approaching his 30's....he had a few good years for us...ONE outstanding year.....we got him for peanuts...and undrafted FA from the CFL.....

now you parlay that into mutiple draft picks....maybe a 3rd and a fourth....ore ONE 2nd...and BAM....we got value for Wake......

not popular I'm sure....

I didnt hear the dolphin brass saying washington over payed for him ... only the bloggers do .. and what do they know?

popular doesnt matter anymore kris, the stadium will be empty regardless so i agree clean house. build for future

Jeff....I don't think we even got around to talking real money....but I see what your saying...obviously they had to discuss price @ some point....

Dusty...I think Long would have been worth 2 1st rounders BEFORE last season started.....

Fins could get Clairborne, Blackmon or Floyd at #8 if the following four chips fall.

1)Colts - luck
2)Skins - Griffin
3)Vikings - Kalil
4)CHIP #1-Browns take Tannehill
5)CHIP #2-Bucs take Richardson instead of Clairborne
6)CHIP #3-Rams take an Reiff LT to protect
Bradford instead of Blackmon
7)CHIP #4-Jags take DE Ingram, Clairborne,
Blackmon or Floyd
8) Fins pick anyone Jags didn't pick OR?

WE HAD A POPULAR PLAYER IN MARSHALL did the stadium sell out ? NO!! if we win the Ticket sales will be there! Popular players or not .. as a matter of fact MAYBE WE WILL CREATE POPULAR PLAYERS!

Please see the above corrections.
Also, those thoughts from Coach Philbin...did he tell them to you personally?

Fins will fill seats once they start winning.

There's many things for people to do in South Florida with their time.

It's no longer the only game in town like it was for many decades. If it were, people would probably still come enven with a losing season.

yeah swamy, most games will be blackedout this year. ross will not be happy

sheet yous a dum bleotch

when you make statements like " witch offence our we going to use this year" Makes you look like a 9th grade dropout...

I like Jake Long but he is NOT Joe Thomas so why should he expect more?Thomas is never hurt and is probably considered better anyway.not to say you don't give him a big bonus and extension but you don't over pay and you do need to protect yourself against injury.

Long has not had his deal redone because Ireland is too busy trying to resign Pat White

Trade Long for Mallett. Y not?

Why would NE do that?

Some of you still don't realize it has to be worthwhile for both sides. Besides, if Mallet is showing he has the stuff, no way NE trades him to the same division.

Jake long for ocho? ???????? And a 6th rd pick???????

Trade Long for 2 picks and Dansby for 2 picks.
We need more draft picks than FA vacancies so that someone will have to compete to make the roster.
Moore and Garrard both understand that they have to take a beating.
Thier other choice is the manager training program at Burger King.

I disagree with Jeff.
Vikings take Blackmon or Richardson. Then maybe trade up into the 2nd half of first and get a tackle.

I was wrong. Henne was not franchised. I am here to take my punishment and swallow your loads.

From here on I shall be known as the LoadMaster.

I am ready and waiting for your multiple squirts.

:O

Stanford TE Coby Fleener ran a 4.45 at Stanford's pro day. Nothing report on Luck. He's still #1 coming off the draft boards.

But boy would a TE running a 4.45 40 look good in a Dolphin jersey!

IF I were the Fins GM for a few days;

I would trade Jake Long to the Vikings and some additional picks... then I would trade the 3rd overall pick to someone interested in Blackmon or Kalil, to trade down in the 1st round and more additional picks, and get additional picks in the 2nd and/or 3rd. Then I would turn around and trade down by trading our own 8th selection, to get addition picks... I would then target valued players such as LT Jonathan Martin, QB Tannehill, and then address the following postions with the 2nd and 3rd round picks:

- WR (Stephen Hill, Alshon Jeffery, Rueben Randel, Tommy Streeter)
- OG (Kelechi Osemele, Brandon Washington)
- OLB (Jonathan Massquoi)
- TE (Coby Fleenrer, Dwayne Allen)

By trading Long, you would eliminate the headache of getting him to sign a hefty contract, save $$ (to sign the team's next year's FAs), and would get a new LT, in Jonathan Martin, at a cheaper price than Jake Long. Plus, you would address the QB position (by drafting Tannehill) at a lower selection.. Tannehill is not worth the 8th pick.. NO WAY!!

I'm the same fan that believed that:

- RG3 is not worth the future of your franchise
- Manning would have been a disaster for the franchise
- Matt Flynn would have a failure and overpaid backup QB
- and that Alex Smith made a mistake not signing with us, as he was the best QB FA for this team.

Wishful thinkig? Maybe, but hey, Ireland might be reading my comments, and I could be getting a call from him very soon. :)

A PhinFan4Life

How do you drip heads ever expect to build a team trading away your best players for unproven picks.

It's dumb.

When you land a good player, you keep them. That is how you build a team.

kinda like this jeff row guy.

Bell...no INT's for TD's....EVER! Sorry guys but I'm still livid folks think he was a solid football player. He gonna resign for less money because no one else is going to offer anything near what the fins will pay him to stay.

@dfins006

Actually this might be fun. If I were GM I probably would be thinking along the same line as you.

Philbin wants to build through the draft. Okay, so lets do it then.

I would draft Reiff at #8 or trade down for picks.

I would probably keep Long but look at trading Dansby. Why? The dude had 2 sacks and Jayson Taylor had 7. Burnett had 2.5

Then start drafting best player available. If Philbin wants to build (rebuild) or whatever then lets do that. We have yet to do a total rebuild of this team. We been plugging and playing for 16 years now.

AGREE JACK,BELL WAS AN AVERAGE PLAYER.NO MORE,NO LESS ..HE'S LIKE BERGER OR HARTLINE OR D.THOMAS....JUST SORT OF BEING THERE AND GET HIS MONEY.........

@ Corrections.....

I really wasn't paying to much attention to the post last night....as doon as O posted I that Jeff Row..AKA SMF/pricemaster/who knows who else.......began trolling me for attention...and I quickly grew tired of his act...so I stoped reading post for the most part....

But.....

Looking over last nights stuff....man....you toasted him....and I apperciate that....I'm sure it wasn't for my benifit....but i enjoyed in nonetheless......

ANOTHER dumb arse move for Parcells and the Bunch taking him with the #1 Pick I say trade him and get draft picks ubtil we get a QB to block for why are we going to pay for HIM ??? DUHHH

Home says> Fireland

Jeff Ireland absolutely sucks
Further evidence the racist Ireland could have signed Flynn or Tebow (if Philbin knew how to coach and build a team around him)

Instead we got old injured perennial loser Garrard
For only 1 1/2 million more we could have had Tebow right here in Florida

What a complete idiot Fireland!

CBS analyst and 2002 NFL MVP Rich Gannon, who has watched Flynn closely as the Packers’ preseason TV analyst, made a case, off the air, for why Miami messed up by not offering more to get Flynn, who reportedly got three years and $19 million (plus $5 million in incentives) from Seattle:

“Comparing Flynn to David Garrard (who got one-year, $3.35 million), it’s not even close,” Gannon said, believing Garrard isn’t a clear upgrade over Matt Moore. “If I’m Joe Philbin, who is better to help me install my system than a guy who has been in it for four years? If you have a guy that knows the system like Flynn, you are so much further along. Just pay the guy a few extra million. What Seattle paid is fair. Why wouldn’t Miami do that deal? This is insane. The guys in Seattle did a much better job recruiting him.”

Plus, as Gannon noted, Flynn has the skill set for the West Coast offense. Gannon said Seattle called Gannon, Mike McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers (who predicts Flynn will be a top-15 starter) and others in determining Flynn’s value and concluded he was worth that type of money. But Philbin, Flynn’s former offensive coordinator, did not ask Ireland to offer that type of money.

As for Garrard, “He has a ways to go, which is unusual for a guy with as many starts as he has,” Gannon said.

Gannon raises this broader question: “Who is the guy evaluating the quarterback talent in that building? Joe Philbin has an offensive line background; he was the protection and run game guy in Green Bay. You better have someone who knows how to evaluate that position.” He said Miami is now the AFC East’s fourth-best team.

Home is officially not renewing his (4) Miami Dolphin season tickets of 22 yrs and has no confidence whatsoever in this Dolphin regime
Many other season ticket holders are doing the same and not interested in the pitiful product being put on the field for Miami
Miami is the laughing stock of the NFL in every city in the country
Nobody is going to pay to watch a talentless loser team disappoint them every Sunday
This Dolphin team simply is not worth supporting
After a humiliating 0-7 start last season following 2 previous losing seasons and a 1-15 season just prior to that Home and many other long time loyal fans are done

Steven Ross & Jeff Ireland can now sit in the stands alone in the underwear and chaps with a half empty bottle of scotch muttering to themselves

have a HAARPy day :(

Pats-Steelers-Giants-Pack-Saints: they are all perenial playoff contenders. quick name their high priced left tackle. Browns always suck, but i bet most of us know Joe Thomas is their starter. pay the playmakers.72 o-line,with what should be 3 HOF's, was a buch of rejects.

Get your stars through the draft, not free agency, and pay your own draft picks if they earn it in your system. That's how you build.

The Dolphins have done it right with this free agency by adding complimentary players. They signed their one pro bowl free agent in Paul Soliai. That's how you do it. Now get your first round grade QB in the draft and we are on our way ...

Past high ticket free agents from other teams blow up in our face or hang albatross contracts on our cap. See Brandon Marshall and Karlos Dansby. Marshall still counts over $5 mill towards this year's cap.

Start anew and do it the right way and for god's sake draft some players that are capable of being stars.

Mark in Toronto: what do you do with jake? he has definitely earned it but those nagging injuries are a huge red flag.

Ireland doesnt give a crap about the players, coaches, fans,or media. The only thing he cares about is keeping his job and sucking up to his boss. We as fans have to get him out of Miami in order to restore a competitive team and a professional reputation with players and coaches and fans throughout the league and especially FA's.
Protests are fine but the best way to get him out is to hit Ross in the pocketbook. Boycott the games and anything Dolphin. Try not to even watch them on TV. Ross will eventually get the message that Ireland is the cancer on the Dolphins and will fire him. Friends dont let friends buy Dolphin tickets.

Protest the Vile Puke Product that current GM Jeff Ireland is putting on the field

One of the NFLs worst now 4 yrs in a row!

This year will be the worst probably win between 2-5 games at best on fluke plays, tipped balls or turnovers

New topic Armando....

Steven Ross & Jeff Ireland can now sit in the Miami Dolphin stadium alone in their underwear and chaps with a half empty bottle of scotch muttering to themselves

have a HAARPy day :(

Aside from they Peyton mess....this was amongh the most uneventful FA periods in FINS history...and that might be a good thing....

Maybe Ocho Cinco becomes availabe after the draft a basement bargain price....

Mark, that's not sexy, but you're absolutely right in that it's the right way to make your team. Plus this is something this team HASN'T tried yet to improve.

So, I'm resigned that we have to take our medicine this year and watch this ugly process play out. Hopefully it bears fruit in upcoming years. It will mean the talent acquisition needs to be on point. The Coaching and development needs to be handled properly. And the team needs to buy-in.

If they don't get a 1st-rd grade QB (by the way, I put Weeden in 1st-rd grade even if they get him later), I'll be concerned the team still doesn't realize the importance of a franchise QB, but other than that, I'm fine with the lack of FA moves by Ireland.

We all wanted Tony Sparano gone...and he is.
We all wanted Chad Henne gone...and he is.

We have a brand spanking new football philosophy in Miami that is only two months old...and because of the new CBA rules, the players can't officially learn it until after the draft.

No one, and I mean NO ONE really knows how the Dolphins will perform under this new regime. It can be Cam Cameron part 2...or it can be a Jim Harbaugh type revival that has us in contention right out of the gate.

Case in point...Alex Smith was an average QB until Harbaugh started coaching to his strengths. Who's to say Moore does not react the same way under Philbin's new coaching style?

Gloom & Doom have shadowed the fan base for a long time and it's hard to break the cycle of being hyper-critical of every decision made by the front office and previous coaches (including one fist pumping coach)during the games.

But that is all history and we are now moving forward into a new chapter of Miami Dolphins football, one with all the promise of a new born infant who has nothing but a blank canvas on which to make their mark on history.

What was one of the biggest most frustrating problems with the Miami Dolphin's over the past 3 yrs?

answer:
Scoring in the Red Zone

Did u know that Tim Tebow is the HIGHEST RATED NFL QB SCORING IN THE RED ZONE!!!

That's right Florida Gators Tim Tebow is better rated in the Red Zone than Peyton Manning & Aaron Rogers!

If Home knows this, how come GM Jeff Ireland does not know this?

Instead Ireland signs Garrard for almost the same money

Tim Tebow Wins!

Go Jets!

Sparano & 24 yr old healthy Tebow
or Philbin(who never has called one offensive play)
& 34 yr old w herniated disc perennial loser Garrard

The Dolphins Suck

PERIOD

Ocho Cinco couldn't get open if he changed his name back to Chad Johnson
