So where is the Jake Long contract extension?

Jake Long is in the final year of a contract that seemed oh-so-expensive in 2008 when he signed as the first overall draft pick but has been well worth the money to date. Long is scheduled to make $11.2 million in his contract year and cost upwards of $12.8 million against the cap.

The base salary is basically the cost of doing business. The cap charge seems like a case of business that could be done better.

The fact is the Dolphins need to extend Long's deal. He has been a good player. He is a foundation stone for the franchise. And an extension could easily lower that cap charge and give the team more space to maneuver as it wishes in the coming days of the 2012 league year.

Yet, off Long went on his honeymoon recently and the Dolphins didn't have a new contract ready for him as a wedding gift.

Ah, the why is a puzzle.

The club's official stance is that Long without doubt is not going anywhere, that he is outstanding and that he absolutely will not be allowed to hit free agency at the end of 2012 so that he can possibly go elsewhere.

Good call, Dolphins folks!

So why the delay when an extension could be beneficial for both sides? Well the possibilities are the puzzle.

Maybe both sides have a wink-wink agreement that something will get done and it will. Great, but time is money and the longer this is on the back burner, the weaker the Dolphins seem from a cap standpoint.

Maybe both sides have talked and they simply haven't come to an agreement. This is probably the most likely scenario. The truth is gauging Long's value won't be easy. Cleveland re-signed Joe Thomas to an 8-year contract worth a reported $92 million that included a whopping $44 million in guaranteed money. That's an $11.5 million annual average. And the trouble for the Dolphins is Long will expect to exceed this deal by a significant amount.

Worth it? Obviously yes at first blush. But look deeper. Long is worth is if he's healthy. Long is worth it if the club last season judged his play to be as good as ever -- unlikely considering his rash of injuries. Long, in short, is worth it if the Dolphins believe him to be Jonathan Ogden or Walter Jones -- both of whom played for years at exceedingly high levels and without injuries.

But what if Long is Tony Boselli? Boselli was perhaps the best left tackle in the game early in his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Big, strong, mobile, he was Long before Long. But then he injured a knee. Then he injured an ankle. Then he hurt his shoulder. And then he hurt the shoulder again. And again.

And by his seventh NFL season, Boselli was broken. Folks were surprised when Boselli was placed on the expansion list and allowed to go to Houston. But when he arrived in Houston, injured and unable to contribute, everyone understood.

So is Long on the road to being Boselli? In the past two years he's had a building litany of injuries -- first a knee, then an ankle and shoulder and last year a back and a torn right biceps that forced him to finish the season on injured reserve.

Are the Dolphins worried the trend might continue? Even privately there is confidence Long will recover and continue to be a pillar of the offensive line. But I would imagine the club would nonetheless like to protect itself financially against the continuation of the recent trend.

Perhaps the club prefers to see how Long returns and is handling training camp and the early part of the season before committing to a new contract.

That would be smart. Of course, in the meantime, that significant cap hit glows in neon as needing to be addressed. It is a catch-22. Pay Long and gamble he'll be fine? Or delay a new contract and suffer the tightened cap space?

There is, of course, another scenario that might explain the lack of a new contract for Long. It is obvious this is a big-ticket item. It will cost a lot of dollars. What if owner Stephen Ross, smarting from tanking ticket sales, simply isn't in position to dole out $40-$50 million in guaranteed money right now, much of which would no doubt come in the form of a hefty signing bonus?

What if the Dolphins -- among the bottom five spenders in cash outlay a year ago -- are simply trying to hold down costs again?

These are all questions the Dolphins don't have to answer. But it would clear things up if they did.

phish, personally, I think if injuries are an area of concern then you have to look at it this way...

You don't really need the cap space right now because they aren't going to sign any big money free agents (they're gone), so you let him play out the year. If he's healthy then you negotiate the extension ... if there are snags, then you franchise him. Therefore you have him under contract for two more years (this and the franchise year). If he proves that he won't be chronically injured then you make him the highest paid left tackle in football. If he's Tony Boselli ... well then that scenario writes itself.

ROSS IS A DEVELOPER! What don't fans get about that? Developers, use other people's money with front men to sell fools glittering units shoddy constructed buildings, built on stolen property or environmentally sensitive land!
See how that applies?
It all makes sense really.

Home is officially not renewing his (4) Miami Dolphin season tickets of 22 yrs and has no confidence whatsoever in this Dolphin regime
Many other season ticket holders are doing the same and not interested in the pitiful product being put on the field for Miami
Miami is the laughing stock of the NFL in every city in the country
Nobody is going to pay to watch a talentless loser team disappoint them every Sunday
This Dolphin team simply is not worth supporting
After a humiliating 0-7 start last season following 2 previous losing seasons and a 1-15 season just prior to that Home and many other long time loyal fans are done

"All we are saying...is give Philbin a chance".

Everybody sing it now!

"All we are saying...is give Philbin a chance".

We have horrible mangement, no money to spend, no playmakers, no Pro Bowlers (Long was bad last season, injured or not), rookie HC who didnt call plays last season, 2 back-up QB trying to compete for a starter position, no RT, no WR's, Bush still as the number 1 back, lost the DC, Ireland choosing players from the draft.

This has the making of a bad season, whoever doesnt think so is delusional. I just hope when fans stop showing up to games and all games are blackout Ross then realizes he needs to fire Ireland.

DC< i'm with you all the way. I look at Weeden and Tannehill as the only players I care about in this draft. I want one of those two and I consider this a good offseason. i don't care much about this free agency period. I mean, outside of peyton manning, what else was there? To pay 60 million to a wide receiver a trangression away from a year long suspension (Vincent jackson) or a guard? Pff, forget it. In three years people in Buffalo may just be crying about the mess the team is in because of the contracts paid to Fitzy and Mario (friggin Toronto paid for that contract by the way with their Bills in Toronto series).

If the Dolphins continue to draft and retain pro bowl players (not enough are in the pipeline by the way) then the team will be fine. Ireland has a decent approach in this manner with building through the draft but he needs to pick up his game.

After Soliai, who are the young guys we drafted that will deserve a significant extension? Long, Pouncey, Wake and then a couple of maybes in Vontae and Odrick if they build on their promise. Not enough.

F'K Philbin & Ireland!

Give Sparano & Tebow a chance!

Go Jets!

Show Miami Dolphin management how pompous and ignorant they are!

Go Florida FAV, Best rated NFL QB in the Red Zone Winning Tim Tebow

Go Tebow!

Go Jets!

"Philbin...build through the draft"!

Now say it with your Darth Vader voice and it all makes sense.

I agree 100% with your posts.I like Joe Philbin & I love the Miami Dolphins. A rebuiling team gets 3 years in my book. Let's see if Jeff & Joe can do better then Parcels & Sparano. Now go get a QB. After seeing 0 games, watching 2 you tube clips, and reading 2 draft mags I like Osweiler. Tannehill,Cousins, and Weeden would not ruin my day either.

Ross borrowed money FROM THE GOVERNMENT on his real estate and used THAT money to buy the Dolphins. He then conned celebrities into ownership pieces and put that cash in his pocket. And as Armando said his cash outlay last year was among the lowest in the NFL. He is a cheap con artist that only cares about the money.

Matt Moore or David Garrard can get the dolphins to the playoffs, we lean on our Defense which has been top 10. Matt Moore was the 12 rated QB last year(and that includes the first 3 games where he sucked) 12 teams make the playoffs, so if Moore can play as well as he did the last 9 games of the year & the Defense comes in to the season in shape and plays well all year, coupled with a soft schedule, we can make the playoffs...We do need some help at WR & another pass rusher. if we fill these 2 needs we should be as good as last year or better(if moore had of started all year, and half the Defense wasn't in piss poor shape to start the year we could have been a wild card last year.)... If we get the TE Weapon & Improve on Safety Play could win the Division, but don't think we have the ammo to solve all those problems this year... Would be nice to get a QB for the Future as well, but that's always a crap shoot... No Draft pick is a sure thing, but some are more likely to pan out than others... Once these guys get paid you never know where there attitudes will go....

I was thinking along those lines too, but I wasn't sure how the money would effect the overall picture. you would likely have 1 disgruntled left tackle but that guy would still play his ass off because he is a consumate pro. it would probably make him meaner(look out opposing DE's)

Tebow Rules and will succeed like always

No more national games for Miami

They suck and are only talked about when sportscasters are laughing or disgusted with the vile franchise

No one care about the Dolphins

Pats, Jets & Bills ALL sweep the stank fish in 2012

Go Brady!

Go Tebow!

Go DE Williams throw 34 yr old hobbled QB Garrard on his head!

41phish...thanks for the note. It's hard to get decent post going when Home is pissin in the pool all day long.
I agree, any of those QB's above would be a win for the team and give us something to build off for the future.
Philbin is a great person, teacher, mentor & hopefully head coach...He was a big influence on Aaron Rogers development into an elite QB, let's see if he can sprinkle some of that mojo on our QB's.

I would love to know what all of you optimistic fans are smoking? Out of all the drafts Ireland has had which one of the player has played above average. 0! Yet you guy still trust him when it comes to drafting players really? Silly sheeps you are!

Clue....Soliai is above-average

34 yr old broken down fired 2nd string QB from a losing franchise, after a year of from football is now the
Highest Paid & Starting QB on the dismal low losing Miami Dolphin team
Who have lost there best player on offense and their best player on defense
Dolphins have hire the most inexperience or losing cast off coaches in the NFL

Dolphins are going straight down to crash and burn

Go Jets!

Go Tebow!

Go Sparano!

NHFINSFAN, Soliai made the pro bowl as a alternate, and besides stopping the run what else is he good at? Force fumbles, sack? Nope! teams dont even run the ball anymore...

Swim in the piss pool with the Miami Dolphins

Tebow cannot be stopped in the Red Zone!

NFL Best QB in the Red Zone is Jets QB Tim Tebow

better than Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers

Ireland is clueless and signs 34 yr old busted up perennial loser from a losing team, sitting on his coach injured with not one other phone call in 2 years from anyone in the NFL

Go Jets!

Go Tebow!

Mark in Toronto....

I love QBs as much as you...IF NOT MORE...but we can't draft one for the sake of drafting one....

We have seen this scenario play out twice in the last 2 weeks alone....3 times if you count Irelands connection to Baylor..which I don't....

Philbin KNEW flynn....it didn't mean jack....or MAYBE it did...in either case we didn't get him...

Manning was destined for the FINS it was his destiny....written in the heavens...that was until he actually became a FA...and we found out he wanted liitle if anything to do with us....

Tannehill would be a 2nd rd QB @ best if others hadn't dropped out....and his former HC is OUR OC...I don't think he is willing to take another ride on this guy...especially not in the 1st RD...

We have to be patient..and let our QB fall to us....like Brees...Flacco...Rodgers...and even...MARINO....it can be done....

Dolphins dont Suck for Luck, RG3, Flynn, Smith or Tebow

They Suck for Garrard and make him the highest paid QB on the roster

Ah Ha Ha Ha Ha

ah Ha Ha Ha Ha!

The Dolphin's Suck

Ireland has had 1 draft where he did not have to answer to big daddy Bill. In it he drafted Pouncy, a STUD pivotman which all great passing teams need in this blitz happy NFL. the other picks were decent.Thomas(if healthy)& clay should be a huge factors in the passing game and wilson & gates look to be special team aces.

PS:Sensimilia was alwys my weed of choice.

Build the team....OUR QB may still be playin High school ball right now....probably suiting up for his senior year....

Of course...there is always MALLETT....Ireland just needsm to do the walk of shame to get him....

41phish, Pouncey isnt even better than his brother and have yet and will never make a game changing play, I would hope drafting a C at 15 or whatever it was he's at least the best OL player on your team. THomas runs upright and didnt show much as a rookie. Clay is a tweener, what tweener NFL player you know makes a dreat impact on a team. Stop making some of the acorns on the team better than what they really are.

Ive never heard of Sensimillia.

Clue, you are negative for negatives sake. You are saying Long, Davis, Pouncey, and yes even Odrick are not above average? And last years draft class still needs a year or two of experience to see what their potential is, Thomas, Clay, Wilson.

You need something else to btch about.

Why are so many of you irate that:

a. We didn't land Peyton, an aging injured stop gap in questionable shape.
b. We didn't over pay for FA's who wanted more than their value? (If we underbid Flynn, don't you think there was a good reason for it....Philbin?)

Clue, Soliai makes offenses one dimensional. He crusges centres and even though the run game is diminished in today's league, he is a useful player and at his price, it is an easy decision to re-sign him. It was a bargain.

Long is in decline and injury prone

Davis is undisciplined and immature, showed up out of shape and even came to practice drunk

Pouncey is ok but has a habit of hiking the ball to nobody in the shotgun

O'Drick has brittle bones and a twice broken leg, missed an entire season and only makes a play once in a while and then does an embarrassing idiotic gay pedophile dance

These guys are losers

Go Sparano & Tebow!

Go Jets!

no game changing plays are made unless you have a great oline. yeah Pouncy was not a sexy pick, but I remember thinking why didn't we trade up to get Gabbert? In hindsight, I am so glad we didn't. I saw him play twice last year and he is a scared puppy in the pocket. I don't know if the guy will ever overcome that. i see clay playing a role similiar to Chris Cooley of the Skins,Tom Rathman of the Niners, and Keith Byoers/Tony Paige of the Dolphins.Thomas needs to get more involved in the passing game and stay healthy.
Sensi is very moist, green, and sticky and it will launch you brother. It's been a long time since i partook so maybe it is not grown anymore.

someone please but a muzzle on Home....

Jeff Ireland fired the best offensive player Marshall that demanded double and triple teaming creating space and making all other WRs look good

Now the WRs are all below average and will almost never be open, All the AFC East secondary's are much better than Miami and that was b4 Ireland fired the glue of the defense Captain Y-Bell and CB Will Allen is thrilled to be off this puke vile team and on the New England Patriots

Miami will have no passing game and TE Clay will no longer be open cuz Ireland Fired Marshall for being black

NHFINSFAN or anyone else,
you think Tony FistPumper will figure out that you can throw out of the Wildcat too now that he has Tebow. I only recall them doing that a few times down here.

Kris, i don't know where this second round grade on Tannehill came from? Every mock I've seen in the last little while has him going no later than 12 and Scouts Inc has him rated as a solid first round talent.

Sure, he would've gone lower if Barkley and perhaps Jones declared. last year, Locker would not have been a top 10 pick if Luck declared, what's the point?

In years past guys like Flacco and Freeman were considered reaches and neither had a draft grade by Socuts Inc as good as Tannehill's.

Tannehill is very deserving of a first round grade and I hope he's our pick at 8.

The Dolphins Suck

There is no hope

Protest GM Ireland 3.29.12 for destroying our once proud franchise

@ Miami Dolphoons Training Facility across from the racist Jeff Ireland's office

See ya there!

no offense meant but Philbin kinda reminds me of Lurch

And Kris, the days of QB's falling are over. With the CBA, QBs will never fall because the associated risk with them is gone. Why did Washington pay such a high price for RG3? Why was there a huge run on what was considered a lack lustre batch of QBs (which was a myth that was later debunked) Their position is the most important by far. If he's your guy, go get him.

Waiting for QBs to fall is an antiquated logic. Those days are gone like Zach Morris' cell phone.

The Jets are going to the SuperBowl

Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland ruined the Dolphins

Miami 4-12 and nobody at the games

Florida residents now dawning Tim Tebow Jets Jerseys

Thank Jeff Ireland 3.29.12 at Protest March in Davie

HOME GTFO you're annoying. That is all...

Seems like Mark from Toronto is another Canuck Idiot

QB Peyton Manning

QB Tebow

QB Flynn

plenty of opportunities for the Miami Dolphins

Ireland struck out on ALL of them

The Dolphins Suck

41phish...Tebow throwing on the run is viewed as a strength in my eyes.
His pocket passing percentage is low due to his low release...but when he's on the run he can side-arm it in for better accuracy.

You put Tim Tebow and Peyton Manning in a comparison and I'm the idiot, Home?

You're a used tampon.

That "new born infant" has bitten me in the asss several times here in Miami, NH. Still, yes, I believe we have the best Coaching staff we've fad here in Miami in the past 25 yrs, so they must be given a chance to do their stuff.

Mark @ 10:14....

Great point...with the rookie wage scale in place....QBs will no longer be an unafforadble luxery who some owners and GMs pass up to hope the next sucker makes a mistake....the risjk is low...and the reward is high....

Sucks for us....

I don't thnk we go QB tho...I think we are going BPA...who ever that may be....

Philbin reminds me of Cam Cameron. I think he'll suffer a similiar fate especially when Ireland cant supply him with any talent.

Ignore the Dolphins like the Dolphins have ignored us fans for so long.

More than a week into the free agent signing period (its about over folks) and it has become obvious the team created more holes than they filled because of the Brandon Marshall trade to Chicago, and the release of starting safety and team captain Yeremiah Bell.

That’s why Dolphins fans have a right to be ANGRY, disappointed, frustrated.

Protest March across from GM Jeffrey Ireland's office
3.29.12 Miami dolphins Training facility

How happy is Brandon Marshall to be out of this cespool?

I think Tebow is going to be a huge weapon in the Jet version of the wildcat. I just think Tony forgot you can throw out of the formation too.Seems like the last 2 years all we did was run it into the line for 0.333334 yards per attempt. I am still scatching my head over his hiring.Whenever I get down on the Phins I think of the Jet Trainwreck. It should be fun to watch them implode.

oscar, coaching can only take you so far. our GM has to get the coaches "players" so we are in trouble already, not to mention his inability to create cap space to fill other holes. i believe philbin wanted flynn but jeff tried to "low ball" him. seattle did a better job and got the prize cheap 6 mil/yr plus incentives.

One positive note is that Brady won't have it that easy back there, at least from the Buffalo Bills, and from us(pressure up the middle).

Kris, do you think the Dolphins can afford to not go QB? I don't think they can if Tannehill is on the board. It's not like an elite player that plays another position will be sitting there.

Luck, RG3, Blackmon, Kalil, and Claiborne. Everyone else has some degree of risk. Ingram is short, Coples is an underachiever, Reiff is well ... an offensive lineman. if Tannehill is on the board and we pass, don't expect anything to change in Miami.

gregz....if coaching can only take you so far than how do you explain the 2011 SF 49ers?

Same group of players from the 2010 squad with a few minor changes...but you add in one Jim Harbaugh and they win 12 games.

That my friend is a coach who can get the most out of his players...unlike Tony Sparano.

What can we do, gregg, except believe Ireland when he says, let the process play out?

Tell the Dummy Ireland

Tim Tebow is the best rated NFL QB in the Red Zone

Better than Peyton Manning & A. Rodgers

Dolphins have been one of the worst red zone teams over the past 3 seasons is most of the reason for their losses

Home would have been a much better GM and worked for free for the good of the organization and the fans

The Dolphins Suck

What was one of the biggest most frustrating problems with the Miami Dolphin's over the past 3 yrs?

Scoring in the Red Zone

Did u know that Tim Tebow is the HIGHEST RATED NFL QB SCORING IN THE RED ZONE!!!

That's right Florida Gators Tim Tebow is better rated in the Red Zone than Peyton Manning & Aaron Rogers!

If Home knows this, how come GM Jeff Ireland does not know this?

Instead Ireland signs Garrard for almost the same money

Tim Tebow Wins!

Go Jets!

Sparano & 24 yr old healthy Tebow
or Philbin(who never has called one offensive play)
& 34 yr old w herniated disc perennial loser Garrard

The Dolphins Suck

Don't forget Devlin, his arm is no great shakes but he is very accurate and might, just might, fit into that quick hiting offense that is planned.

Even though I hate Home flooding the blogs like everyone else he's right. None of the players Davis, Odrick, Smith are anything special just average players. How long will you give Ireland the benefit of the doubt, when we go 5 and 11 next year will that be the final straw, prob not for many of you.

Some of you probably still say we had a good draft give him2 years and see if players develop SMH
