Tannehill pro day under way (Dolphins in the house)

Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill's pro day is proceeding before a large contingent in College Station, Tex.

The Dolphins are there with general manager Jeff Ireland and coach Joe Philbin confirmed. I do not know if offensive coordinator Mike Sherman is there. I will try to confirm. [Update: Sherman is not in College Station.]

Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports the Dolphins contingent had dinner with Tannehill on Wednesday night. They forced him to pay.

Nah, just kidding. I'm assuming the Dolphins paid.

According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, there are 21 teams present for the event. The Cleveland Browns are there, represented by offensive coordinator Brad Childress among others. It is interesting perhaps only to me that the Browns' major voices -- general manager Tom Heckert and head coach Pat Shurmur were not present. They were at Alabama's pro day to see running back Trent Richardson.

The Broncos, Chiefs, Bills, Saints and Seahawks are there, with head coach Pete Carroll representing his team.

Because he suffered a broken foot this offseason, scouts wanted to see Tannehill run to make sure he is relatively healed. According to reports, Tannehill ran the 40-yard dash once and clocked (hand timing) between 4.59 and 4.62.

Tannehill completed his first 24 consecutive throws, according to NFLDraftScout.com analyst Dane Brugler. He had a pass dropped then he had another pass dropped on his 42nd throw. He finished the workout with 65 completions  -- 65 for 68 with two dropped passes.

Yes, quarterbacks typically ace their pro day workouts. I get it. But it is always better that they perform well than if they chuck a hot mess of poo. So give the guy that.

I remind you Tannehill, who started 19 games at quarterback, was a wide receiver before was moved to QB. He will go in the first round as a QB. He said after the workout he has private workouts already set up with the Browns, Chiefs, and Eagles.

i base this on the fact that we have a solid d and our offense will score more since we have a coach that knows how to use players like bush, thomas, clay, and hartline in the freakin passing game.

One thing for sure, in the wco, a qb definitely must be accurate throwing on the run. Its not an offense where every single pass play is designed to be thrown from the pocket.

If these scrubs ever go 8-8 again they'll throw a parade.

Mark Im refering to that person you named earlier in your post. (The W means Who in this case)

Yesterday
smart too. in the day the niners were on the tube constantly and i always remember announcers pointing out that montana was throwing to the 4th read on a pattern.I'm also looking forward to seeing what clay and thomas can do in the tom rathman role.that guy was a pass catching beast.

Shampoo is better, it makes your hair clean
Conditioner is better, it makes your hair silky and smooth.

Anyone saying D. Thomas is anything close to a bust was not watching last year or is stupid.

Write this down:

D. Thomas is going for 1200 yards this year -- 600 rushing and 600 receiving. With 14 TDs.

Slander

i agree, hope he stays healthy. i look forward to seeing him, bush, and clay in a system that knows what to do with rb's/hb's that can catch the ball.sparano was clueless.

3 picks for a backup RB was insanely stupid. Thomas will likely be cut after this season.

scotty

it was stupid but that's spilt milk...he won't get cut but he will get used properly.he can catch it and will be a match up nightmare for nfl linebackers and safeties(imo)

WHY WOULD THE MACHANIC PICKK TENNYHILL?,DOES HE HAVE INJURY LIKE GARAD OR MANNING?

I can't say I'm a huge fan of this kid (my preference is Weeden). But I agree with others who think Sherman knows this kid best, and if he really thinks he can win with him, then it's his butt on the line.

I just have reservations on players who played one position THEN switched to QB (at least this late). I'm sure people will post the 1 or 2 good QBs in the NFL who are the exception (posters love to do that). Still won't make me more comfortable.

I just know Miami NEEDS a player at that position that can be developed for the long-term. And for the Moore lovers, yes, he'll still get his shot, he could win 13 games this Season and never look back (and we'll have our long-term option at QB). But you can't ever have enough QB talent. At the very least you can use them as trade-bait.

Oh, Jarome Iginla? He's a hockey player. Black father who split in his youth. White mother. Grew up in Alberta, Canada. And in those days to be half black with an absentee father, you had to be tough, and he is.

Very good hockey player who happens to be black.

Hockey's Jason Sehorn I guess, haha.

O, srry Mark, I know nothing about any hockey player outside of Crosvy and Ovenckin

DC, I believe Akili Smith was a WR turned QB....

Haha, THE DRUNK ASSISTANT! ALoco, you kill me.

TANNYHILL WONT BE A DOLPIN,HE DOESNT HAVE THE TWOO THINGS THE MACHANIC LOOKS FOR IN A QB
1. HE NOT INJURED

2. HIS FIRST NAME NOT MATT.

DC - Tannehill played QB in HS, got recruited as a QB to A&M and switched to WR to help the team out his 1st 2 years.

Still only 20 games college experience but I look at it like this. If he played that welll with only 20 games exp. then think how good he'll be in a year.

I would take Tannehill slightly above Weeden and Cousins but would be happy with any of the 3. I feel like Tannehill has more upside yet a little more risk because of how high we'd have to take him.

LMAOROTF At Aloco, You might be right., BTW is Tannyhill a SR.?

Texas, thanks, that actually makes me feel better (that he played QB first, then switched, then switched back).

Like I said, if Sherman/Philbin want him, I'm gonna trust him (I think you or Poizen or someone said we need to trust these guys until they prove themselves untrustworthy). And neither has proved that to me yet (in their current roles).

Yes Tannehill came out after his SR year.

THE FOOT

But one thing I'm not for is playing the trade back and get the guy at the right spot game.

IF THEY WANT HIM, TAKE HIM! Simple as that. Grow a pair, MAN UP, make a decision, and let it play out to see if you made the right call.

Vontae isn't a game-changer. Odrick isn't a gamechanger. Pouncey isn't a gamechanger. Not like their going to hurt their record on 1st-rounders by picking a guy earlier than he's "projected."

The right time to pick-up a QB is ANYTIME (especially if you're in need)!

ALoco,

the droopy dog owner is very competitive- he said so- so don't be fooled.

DC - That was probably Poizen but I agree.

I didn't know much about Philbin when hired but he seems to say all the right things so I got nothing else to go on except he came from a structurally sound team that seems to be in the playoffs year in and year out.

Plus I agree with the philosophy of building through the draft. I think that goes a long way in getting buy in to a new system.

DC,

I agree with taking him if thats who they want but what if there is someone at 8 who is a game changer.

Like Blackmon, Coples or Ingram??

Yea, It's just one of those drafts. New minds behind the coaching philosophy. It just happens one of those minds is Sherman. If we draft Tanny, I have to believe they believe he is well worth it. Who am I to question it? If they dont draft him, well enough said. That is why debating what Tanny is or isn't is irrelevant at this point. We will find out on the 26th, or at least we will find out the opinion of the guy who worked with him the closest.

trade that 8th pick down if you can and get the same guy(tannehill) @ 15 or so plus an extra pick or two. if he is gone then take 1 of the other developmental QB's osweiler or cousins. parlay those picks and get a couple of wr's n a couple of de/olb's or use them to move around in future drafts.

My belief is in 2-3 years, just like Henne, just like 15-16 other QBs, both these guys will be off the team and another set of QBs will be trying to prove they are the long-term answer.

Posted by: DC Dolfan | March 29, 2012 at 12:12 PM

Well of course they are not bringing in Garrard as a long term answer. He is a bridge guy. Buy a year or two until they figure out a long term solution. If you think Flynn can outplay Garrard, then we just differ greatly in opinion. Garrard has a better arm and years of starter experience compared to 2 game Flynn who is not even guaranteed to start in Seattle.

"Mark, he's white what do you expect. Anyways let the jizzing for Tannehill begin now.."

Clue, that was hilarious...and true.

Aloco

Your list cracked me up today.......good stuff

Guess I'll have to warm up to Tannehill at #8 since I don't think the Fins organizationally could take yet another hit by not drafting him. I'll be his biggest fan if it should go that way. He could be an interesting guy in a situational package like the wildcat. At least until he gets his feet wet.

I dont mind giving up 2 picks for our Rb

Mirror, I don't think Garrard is better than Flynn. I think neither are long-term answers. I don't care that we didn't get Flynn (I actually agree with Ireland there, there's no guarantee he can beat out Moore, and it doesn't make sense to pay a guy more than the starter makes). Flynn, Garrard, Moore, they are all in the same boat to me (mediocre/ok).

My point is at SOME point, the team needs to invest in LIKELY long-term answers. Moore to me isn't likely. He's a "maybe" (longshot). And we've gone down that road before (and come up empty). So I'd like them to take a chance on a "likely" franchise QB sometime before I die. That's why I'm always clamoring for a first-round QB in the Draft (even though no, there's no guarantee a first-rounder will be elite).

You seem to think (I'm assuming) Moore can be the long-term answer. That's fine, he'll get his shot (like Henne). I don't see how he loses the starting position to Garrard this year, so he'll be able to prove he's different (from just being a backup). Once again, we'll have actual evidence to base our current assumptions on. Believe me, it makes EVERYONE'S life easier if Moore is the answer. All Dolphins fans would applaud that if it were the case. I'm just saying don't hold your breath is all (and have a backup plan if he proves he's not the answer).

Hello turds The good doctor is in the house!!! Are we talking fins today?

Interesting story on James Walker's AFC EAST blog on ESPN.com.

Basically McShay said that Tannehill is a top 10 pick but he is a better fit for Cleveland who he says has more tools for him.

Kiper disagreed and said that although he could see him going to Cleveland, he thinks Miami is the best fit.

He said with Sherman there you have familiarity and theres some personnel there. He said McShay was underestimating the personnel in Miami.

For what its worth Walker and his blog agreed with Kiper.

aint that special

They are down there doing their jobs. If they pick Tannehill at 8 then they deem him a number 8 guy. I personally think they are thinking pass rusher or lineman. But if Blackmon is there, well we have our starting receiver.

I will provide plenty of rope for you Brady Quin lovers to hang yourselves.

It is all a crap shoot anyway save for the top 6 picks.

And Pat White was not an Ireland pick. Parcells picked him. How many times do people have to say this on this blog site.

DC, I think if Garrard really is healthy, he has a goo chance to beat out Moore. The tone of the feedback from Philbin seemed to express enthusiasm for Garrard to me. The problem is, no point drafting a first round QB if there isn't one there that you are really high on. So it may be that we need Moore/Garrard to hold the fort for a year or two. I'll take Moore/Garrard over Sanchez/Tebum or Fitspatrick.

4 of 12 QB's in last years playoffs were not 1st rd picks

of the remaining 8 1st rounders,4 were not top 10 picks.

osweiler, cousins, and even weeden will be available after 8. tannehill might be too. trade and accumulate boys.

Kiper and McShay can go to hell

Philbin has already insinuated that he doesn't need/want an alpha receiver so my opinion is we pass on Blackmon even if he drops to eight. Could be wrong but that's how I interpreted his comments after we traded Marshall.

IMO Blackmon isnt that great of a prospect, he's not as tall, strong, and fast as some of the other reveivers who were top 5 picks. i.e. Andre Johnson, Calvin J, Fitzgerald

Save money on toilet paper and save a tree. Just use your hand like I do.

Dolphins Draft Update:

Keeping in mind the Dolphins will develod Clay as a TE and deep draft in WR (thank god), OL, and ILB, this would be the "Realistic" updated preferred draft:

1st Round: QB – Tannehill (Trade 1st and 3rd rnd picks with Cleveland)
2nd: WR - Stephen Hill (Think a young Megatron).
4th: WR - T.Y. Hilton (I'm a FIU grad.) if available, or Jarius Wright if not
5th: OT - Levy Adcock
6th: Safety
7th or Undrafted: TE, ILB

draft is deep at wide receiver. phish have 5 picks in 1st 103. get the qb, 2 wr's(best route runners),2 de/olb's. use the other picks to take athletic & versatile o-linemen and te/hb types

While that wasnt me @ 4:47, at least I can admit I use my hand, which guy doesnt

Rafael, only a really stupid fool would trade up to 4 for Tannehill.

Clue, @ 4:44 PM

Again you prove you havent much of one(clue). Justin Blackmon will have an instant impact. Why dont you do us all a favor. Change your screen name to Cleotus. Immediately everyone would know you arent very bright and wont have to read the first sentence of your posts to confirm it!

Yaaaay Tannehil. Another loser for Ireland to add to our stable of crappy QB's. 4th place in the east here we come!!!

YG, so are you saying he's a better prospect than Megatron, Andre Johnson, and or Fitzgerald? The answer is NO! I didnt say he was going to be a bust but, he's no where near though guys talent level.

YG, can you ever reply to a comment without insulting someone, I thought your mom or should I say Mr. Ed taught you better.

You guys have to tell me what you're all drinking. I predict that no matter what these idiots do in the draft, you will all love it. Just because they told you they are "committed to winning". It's hysterical. They could trade the entire draft for a punter and everyone on here would still say "fins super bowl!"

Clue,

You throw insults at me all of time. If its an imposter I appologize. If not, dont dish it out if you cant take it. LOL

Flegm,

Cleveland is going to pick Tannehill and force Dolphins into a trade. Cleveland will draft best available WR with Dolphins 8th pick (Hopefully not Stephen Hill.

MARK SANCHEZ starting Miami QB? GOD, I Pray NOT.

I am starting to get antsy with the Fins duffus owner and Scout Ireland and it wouldn't surprise me one bit that as soon as the Colts come onto the clock drat day that the NY REX trades away his dirty Sanchez and Jeff THE SCLOT Ireland may bite.

There is NOT enough room in NY for two QBs and Tebow will be the Rex QB this season.

Just say in.
