The Dolphins reach the Breakers point

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, general manager Jeff Ireland and club CEO Mike Dee met the media in the past hour. It was relatively cordial. There was absolutely no news made -- which I'm sure the Dolphins intended. And best of all for the local team, it wasn't an unmitigated disaster.

The truth is once Ross got comfortable in the setting -- a meeting room at the Palm Beach Breakers Hotel -- he got on something of a roll and answered questions fine. I have issues with some of his answers, but at least he seemed prepared, confident and eventually at ease.

That's the potatoes.

The meat?

This is unvarnished. I give it to you without editorial. Make up your own mind:

Ross talked of the team's new approach which is supposed to embrace transparency: "We're in a new world today. You can't have a bunker mentality."

Obviously, the perception among people at this meeting, both media and two general managers I canvassed quickly, is that Miami has an institutional inability to lure talent. Ross rejects this notion: "This is the best place in the NFL for players to come ... I wouldn't go from what one or two people might say."

Ross got a little heated when asked about his inability to land Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher, and Peyton Manning: "I'll do it again and again," he said raising his voice. "... Nothing ventured nothing gained."

Ireland said he felt like he had addressed some needs on the offensive line. I asked him if he sees starting-caliber players at the position and he gave me all the names on the roster but didn't say, "We believe (fill in the blank) can start. Training camp will determine if we're right." Obviously, this remains a weakness for the time being.

Ross confirmed what I told you last week about Miami's lack of interest in Tim Tebow: "We dismissed that early on" because Tebow doesn't fit the offensive system.

Obviously the quarterback position was prominent in the discussion. At one point Ireland said, "We feel good where we are at the quarterback position at this time.

Ireland did also say he's made it clear he needs better play from the QB position and the "QB position has been addressed," meaning the attempt to land Manning.

Ross obviously wants more. On the search for a franchise quaterback: "We're going to keep looking. We're very excited about Matt Moore ... That's a good place to start with.".

Ross said he met Archie Manning in December and he was hopeful that meeting, plus the fact Manning has a residence locally and love living here might be helpful in getting the quarterback. "But Manning wanted to go somewhere familiar," he said..

Ross must seriously undervalue Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall. He said "It's not like we've lost anything" when talking of the offseason. Miami did trade Marshall. Ross added that the team got "fair value" for Marshall..

I asked Ross if he's rebuilding. He dodged the question: "We think we have a fine nucleus ...We know where there are some weaknesses. We're looking to correct that.".

I guess everyone is at the last blog still spewing nonsense about Tebow.

Same ol sh#t grom the circus monkey and his peanut gallery!

There is no plan. That is the one and only problem. No plan at all!

There is no worst blind than the one that does not want to see...

this office is beyond stupid.

"The QB position has been addressed." Really? An attempt to get Peyton Manning addressed nothing in my eyes. I do like Ross in a lot of ways and do expect him to stick to his word going forward. Ireland, not so much.

So , while sitting in that room - no one asked Ross if "Jeff Ireland is getting the job done as the GM? If so - how is his success measured?" That is what I would like to hear from him.

Ross is just like Obama. The whole ship is sinking and he's pretending like everything's fine. I would have Ross, "What does it feel like to own a team that has a 0% chance of making the playoffs?"

Wake me up after the draft. Any discussion now about the QB or any other position is incomplete.

The Herald asked Ross if he's rebuilding. He dodged the question: "We think we have a fine nucleus ...We know where there are some weaknesses. We're looking to correct that."... yes..FREE AGENCY !!!

How about this question" What grade would you give Ireland in free agency this year?"

obama has set this country back 10 years....hopefully Ross wont do that to our Dolphins

Guys, you need to read between the lines. They can't say, "I hate our QB situation right now." That would not give Matt Moore confidence. When they say, "we still have weaknesses that we're addressing," you need to be able to understand that means they are not CONVINCED Moore is the guy (ditto the holes EVERYONE sees in WR, S, OLB, etc.).

It's called "spin." You say one thing, but really mean something else. It's all about public relations and how to make diverging points.

Trust me when I tell you no one in that building is happy the team is 6-10. And if that record continues people understand they'll be fired. Things are changing.

Wants to be transparent but continue to answer questions indirectly and in code.

DC, he even goes further than that calling Matt Moore a "starting point". Yet, most people still want to hate and spew because they want everything yesterday.

Now, if they go through the draft and still have no hope at the QB position after doing nothing last year, then I will pick up my pitchfork too.

Dolphins' fans. Stop fighting it. The Dolphins are going to stink as long as Steve Ross owns the team. Stop struggling and accept it. 2-3 years after Ross and Peterson leave the team, the Dolphins will be good again. Until then, you need to give up hope that the Dolphins will be good. You'll be much happier if you stop trying to believe there's a way the Dolphins will be good under Steve Ross. It's just not going to happen.

Honest, straight forward reporting. No rhetoric, snipes or complaining. That is how is how the blog should be.

I really believe they thought they could get manning A LOT cheaper than what he went for. He is now the hightest paid QB in the league making more than Brees for God's sake.

I am the same as I have been since Shula retired (forced out). Hopeful. A fan. And Loyal.

How can a team be rebuilding if it was not built to do anything in the first place?

Just saw a headline on MSN that the Saints are fishing for Parcells. HA! Guess they are not checking references.....

Mando, how is that dodging the question? When you rebuild you start from scratch, you don't have a nucleus. Stop trying to look at everything so damn negative. Not every question that you ask has to have a yes and no answer.

Ross talked of the team's new approach which is supposed to embrace transparency: "We're in a new world today. You can't have a bunker mentality."

Does Ross mean the teams new approach as of today? If so good because they have been anything other than open thus far.

Communicate, accept that we're rebuilding and see what we can add to our offense prior to the start of the season.

Philbin strikes me as a well prepared, experienced coach, add some good pieces to the offense and it stands a chance of being better than last year. A top 5 defense and we might be competitive.

unless you get a QB in this league you're rebuilding. Most of the NFL teams are rebuilding every year.

Agreed Mark. People should play this out in their head. If the team said EXACTLY what they wanted to do, what do you think the other 31 teams in the league will do (ignore it)?

Whatever anyone thinks of Ireland, he's not going anywhere this year (at least). So just asking for him to be fired isn't realistic. Now, if they go 0-7 again, then that sentiment might get some steam. But as of now he has the full confidence of the Owner and that's all there is to it.

No DC Dolfan, I'M RIGHT HERE.To talk about Tim Tebow.Mr.Ross was correct in saying why Our franchise didn't pursuit Tebow. But for Us, Dolphans to hate on Tebow is unfounded and stupidly blind.Comtemplate this...TIM IS THE PERPECT QUATERBACK TO ORCHESTRATE COACH SPARANO'S WILDCAT.Mark Sanchez has become expandable, collateral damage.

True post!

Every BS word uttered by these slimy pigs makes me hate them even more. They never fess up to anything and are always "very excited about where we are"? REALLY??? SERIOUSLY??? Youre VERY EXCITED about the F-ing Dolphins right now??? With no QB and Brian Hartline as our #1 WR???? God I feel like ripping my hair out!!! It's seriously insulting to the fans intelligence to make comments like that. Yeah...you know what...I was wrong. Mr. Ross and Mr. Ireland are "very excited", so everything must be fine and under control. AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!

"Obviously, this remains a weakness for the time being."

I guess the part about their being no editorial and that we could make up our own minds was untrue? So you kind of did a pre-dodge of sorts, just like Ross.

I understand their need to stay positive but would it seriously hurt them any to admit they made a mistake here or there? Why the constant "EVERYTHING IS GREAT" when we know there are some concerns? I just don't understand why no one is able to be objective in our society today.

Look at your team Ross and tell us what good things you have done along with some mistakes you would like to rectify. You can do it without hurting a players/coaches/gms image or feelings. This is different from your other businesses.

Say Ross sells shoes, and he advertises that they are "the most comfortable shoes in the world". Well that's all fine and good, but once people start buying the shoes and realize they are sub par would he continue to advertise them as great shoes or would he say "we realize your concerns and admit and recognize there are some flaws, we are working on rectifying the bad and sincerely hope you will buy our shoe again because we are making it better"?

Lastly is it me or do all of the reporters seem super ballsy when they're writing their opinion pieces but when they get in front of the actual people they write about they seem to turn into wussies. Where are all of the questions reporters have been asking for weeks? Not one question about Ireland and why he survived the cut when Sparano was let go? I mean could there be a more obvious question? Did any of the reporters ask this? Might have been an educating answer we got back. Maybe the NFL doesn't see Ireland in the same way that fans do? Maybe Petersen advised against firing Ireland for some reason? I guess we will never know. Grow some Ballz guys!

Rob,

you need help dude! Its just a game man. If you want to rip your hair out do it for something a little more important. Like wars, people dying unjustly, world hunger, gas prices, the kardashians, etc... Its just a game man.

WE WERE A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT ON TIM TEBOW. I GET THAT! BUT WE WILL BE COMPLETE FOOLS IF WE THINK THAT TIM WILL NOT SUCCEED.THE NY jests WERE PERFECT FOR HIM.IN THE BIG SPOILD TUNAS MIIND PAT WHITE PALES IN COMPARISON TO TEBOW RUNNING THE WILDCAT.By the way have you-all heard the rumor that Parcels will coach the Saints.ANOTHER B ITCH A SS SABAN.

"Ross is just like Obama. The whole ship is sinking and he's pretending like everything's fine."

Then I guess that means Ross is the same as Huzienga and Obama is the same as Bush.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

AND WHY THE HELL DIDNT ANYONE ASK THE TOUGH QUESTIONS???? EVERYONE WALKS ON EGGSHELLS AROUND THESE GUYS!!! HOW BOUT ASKING WHAT HE THINKS OF THE FAN UNREST AND THE PROTESTS? HOW BOUT ASKING WHAT HE THINKS OF THE JOB JEFF IRELAND IS DOING? HOW BOUT ASKING IF HE IS AFRAID GAMES WILL BE BLACKED OUT DUE TO AN EMPTY STADIUM NEXT YEAR??? I WOULD KILL TO BE IN AN INTERVIEW SETTING WITH THESE F-ING A-HOLES!!!

Rob,

you need help dude! Its just a game man. If you want to rip your hair out do it for something a little more important. Like wars, people dying unjustly, world hunger, gas prices, the kardashians, etc... Its just a game man.

In other words...this metting between the media and the dolphins management amounted to absolutely NOTHING!!!

I think ross could look a blind man in the face and tell him he could see just fine...him and ireland are just terrible liars and even worse at trying to defend their approaches towards this teams overall performance!!!

i have to say, all the negativity of the fans was initiated by ross when he said miami was going to finally address the need for a franchise quarterback. fans became to expect something BIG, a surprise trade or something of that nature. what they didn't expect is what appears to be the only option left, and that is a repeat of the HENNE strategy, reaching in the draft for a QB who may or may not be able to start. if ross still desires to make good on his promise(aquiring a franchise QB) by using the draft, fans and press don't see a franchise QB available after LUCK+RG3, so this is why there is so much hub-bub, and to make matters worse we have now added two additional HUGE holes(marshall+bell) to fill on top of the ones that were already in existance, and fans are now in belief that the only resource available to address these holes is the draft, and if you do the math, it just doesn't add up. sure we can fill these positions, but it will be with sub-par talent(same-old) as has been the case for the last decade, the nolan carrol's, clyde gates... miami(before the loss of marshall+bell) was really not in that bad of shape, it actually looked like we could've added to the talent of marshall, giving us two premier recievers, upgrade at right tackle and beefed up the secondary, but by adding two big losses to the honey-do list(ss+#1reciever)the fans now know that these hopes have been snuffed out. and that is exactly what the fans are so distraught over. the key positions that could've been upgraded with better talent will now be filled with later round picks. needs: #1 reciever
#2 reciever
: strong safety
: right tackle
: OLB,RB,QB

And Rob,

They dont ask tough questions because they are scared littles bit#@es. They are scared they will get black balled and lose their little whispering sources.

Okay, help me understand something here. I'm just wandering how in the hell would the Fins be able to sign Manning if he wanted to come to Miami in the first place. Where is the cap space? For that matter I would like to know what happen to all the cap space that the Fins gererated from trading Marshall and cutting Bell. The Fins started off with approximately $14 mil in cap space. Then the trade and they got roughly $6. Then they cut Bell and received another 4 mil and change. I'm no math engineer, but that comes out to be about $24 mil and change. I know the resigned Paul, and signed Gerrard. But, who else have they signed to account for all the cap being ate up. Therefore, my point is all this time that Ross was going after Manning was a big waist of time and complete bs. Even if Manning wanted to come to Miami, where would Ross come up with the kind of contract that Peyton received in Denver. None of this makes any since to me and I just keep sitting here scratching my head. No wonder I'm going bald.

Hey Slam, it's more than a "game" to most people here. The fact that people are reading this forum and commenting on owner/GM press conferences in March makes this more than a "game". And I've been a loyal fan and season ticket holder for over 30 years, so excuse me if I have gotten a little pissed off over the years with people repeatedly defacating on the team and "game" that I love.

These guys dodge questions like, John Wayne dodged bullets.... They haven't got a plan. All they got is a couple of empty heads, and alot of empty seats in the stadium !!! Dumb and dumber. They might as well not draft a QB with the first pick, it's a waste now... So stick with Moore and Garrard and draft a DE or WR with the first pick and go after Barkley or Jones next year.

ROSS IS A JACKAZZ!

It is hilarious to me--actually, no it's not; it's maddening--how you regulars here who think Home is a clown and uneducated are clearly the ones who are wrong.

FIRST, I AM NOT HOME, AND I SWEAR ON MY LIFE THAT IS TRUE.

Any educated person can tell from Home's writing and humor that he's phucking with you people *some* of the time, because it's fun, and this is all just entertainment, after all.

But, Home is actually right on most of what he says. It is embarrassing to be a fan of the Dolphins both because of the team's performance *and* because of how stupid many or most of you diehard fans are.

Phins78, for example, in your little debate on the last post -- Home was the one who was right.

And them some of you other regulars come in and think you are bashing Home, but he is laughing at you.

I, for one, enjoy Home's posts. They literally make me laugh out loud many times, and they are right in terms of football knowledge.

I suspect that some of you who don't get it are 15 year old boys--not your fault. The rest of you are about as educated as 15 year old boys.

Some of you who have the highest opinion of yourself, such as DC Dolfan, are the most clueless.

READ THIS DC: NO, IN NEW YORK THEY ARE MOST CERTAINLY NOT TALKING ABOUT THE FINS' BACKUP QB GARRARD. THAT'S THE FREAKIN' POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, being Miamians who's names end in z yourselves, you don't get that Mark Sanchez, who sucks, is a crybaby selfish loser. It is not Tebow's fault that Sanchez is a crybaby and not a winner.

In any event you *will* see Tim Tebow playing on teams that win playoff games for many years, not as a Bradylike QB throwing 40 times a game, but as a key contributor with a winning attitude.

1. He will rub off on the thugs.
2. Forgetting even that, Tebow himself will account for 16 TDs out of the wildcat or as a FB/TE this year alone.

Tim Tebow is 23 years old and was acquired for a 4th round pick and the equivalent salary of a garbage man.

OF COURSE HE WAS A GOOD ADDITION TO THE JETS' TEAM.

YEAH WE'RE REBUILDING! IS IT NOT OBVIOUS!
Mr.Ross bought a dilapidated franchise that dangled a carrot that rotten so much it has the stench of spoiled Tuna.

Nothing Stephen Ross or Jeff Ireland can say today will change the perception of the organization right now. That has to be done in the field with wins. The National media and local media are having a field day with the Dolphins right now. But keep in mind this is the same National media that last year was salivating and praising the Eagles for what they were doing in free agency. How did that turn out? The local media was loudly chanting for McNabb, Young or Orton for the QB position in Miami. McNab and Young might be out of the league this year and Orton is a back up in Dallas. So take what ever information the media ia passing out with a grain of Salt.

Dolphin fans please understand this:
If you fire Jeff Ireland this year or next year you will have to bring in a new gm, who is going to bring in a new coach, who is going to bring in a new qb and change the roster. We are looking at a true rebuilding process that will be about 4 years if the dolphins fire ireland. just saying.

This is some Bul lshit!! Finger flying back at ya!!

"Dolphins' fans. Stop fighting it. The Dolphins are going to stink as long as Steve Ross owns the team. Stop struggling and accept it. 2-3 years after Ross and Peterson leave the team, the Dolphins will be good again. Until then, you need to give up hope that the Dolphins will be good."

This is the same exact thing people said when Huzienga owned the team and was selling it to Ross. The Dolphins went downhill fast when Marino retired and people were mad as hell at Huzienga, blaming him for being too loyal to people who were clueless. How did getting a new owner change any of that and how do you know another new owner will REALLY be able to change it?

A lot of people said the Yankees would never win a world series with A-Rod on the team. talent changes everything. They drafted well and signed players like Texiera, Granderson and Swisher. Texeira being the only star signed but the other players were key because of their clubhouse presence and in the case of Curtis, work ethic. They won a world series with Alex Rodriguez because they added the right pieces around A-Rod.

Ross needs the right pieces around him. Smart VP and competent GM. Once he has these pieces the Dolphins will win again. It has nothing to do with the owner himself just his ability to hire the right people. He will get it right because the guy wants to win. He has only been an owner for two full seasons, it takes time to learn. But hell, everyone was so happy to kick Wayne to the curb I'm sure you will be happy to give Ross at least 5 years before asking him to sell the team? 2 YEARS,,,,,,2 YYEEEAARRRSSSSS. That is a ridiculously short time to expect an owner to build a franchise.

Kraft bought the Patriots in 1994. It took them 7 years to win a super bowl and wasn't until Brady was discovered that they were relevant. Just sayin.

Winning will take a lot longer if he's not fired. The sooner he's fire the sooner we can start the rebuild.

YG, quit being a jerk face, and you wonder why your the Jester of the blog

"How can a team be rebuilding if it was not built to do anything in the first place?"

LOL maybe building?

Slam is correct about it just being a game.

I forgot to mention in the last post that I continue to remind you that you will see Henne have a good career if he ever gets on a team with a coach (Jax is not one).

Mark Sanchez sucks. Had Henne been a Jet the past few years, with a fanbase that sticks behind their QB (even though they are obnoxious and can turn), you'd have seen Henne, who is clearly a much better QB, crushing Miami and winning playoff games for the Jets.

The Fins have been garbage for 4 years. Henne never got to play in a good system with a WR.

He was going to have a breakout year this year, but the O line got him knocked out in game 4.

The New York Jets have ALWAYS been the red headed step child to the New York Giants in New York. That's is why the Jets tried Brett Favre and then hired a quote machine like Rex Ryan for a coach. For press clippings. Since the Jets did these two things the Giants have won two Super Bowls. The MAIN reason the Jets now got Tim Tebow is for pressw clippings. They have an automatic front page story with the Tebow mania this year without winning a game. The Giants win Super Bowls for New York the Jets run a NO RING CIRCUS.

Protest 3/29/12 noon

Could Ross/Ireland have found a worse coaching staff?

Tim Tebow wins football games.

Miami Dolphins lose football games.

OK Dolfans.

Who is fired 1st?

A) Ireland
B) Philbin
C) Who cares. Lets Go Marlins!

Why did they want to cut Marshall? Must have been more to it than the NYC incident

Ross needs the right pieces around him. Smart VP and competent GM. Once he has these pieces the Dolphins will win again. It has nothing to do with the owner himself just his ability to hire the right people.

Posted by: Phins78 | March 26, 2012 at 03:25 PM

You just contradicted yourself with 1 sentence. Did you really need to post 5 paragraphs?

According to you it has nothing to do with the owner, just the owners ability to hire the right people. So it's the owner!

I hate to say it but, compared to you, Home & Aloco seem like brain surgeons!

D. Matt Moore

In comparison, The Miami media is fried potatoes compared to New York's. First of all Parcells would have been crucified for taking Long over Ryan in 2008.

Secondly, Henne would have been booed unmercilessly the first time he ever took the field because of this. Henne being better off landing in NY than Mia, are you nuts?

Hey TIMMY This isn't a Christmas tale were a naive kid ask for a wish to come true.
It's your complete denial of chump chad's inefficiencies. How many more teamS will he have to play on for you to finally realise that henne IS ineffectual,THE FAN FORMELY KNOWN AS TIMMY THE COUCH IS A COMPLETE MORON.

You as fans are embarrassing the dolphins. So how many super bowls did Hizenga win for you. He brought you Parcells that you were all cheering until it didn't work and somehow blame Ross. Last year was the first one that Ross got a chance to see what was going on after Parcells bailed. For the first time he is starting to step in and force positive changes with transparency. Don't be so stupid to think they can tell you which player they are going after. The new pieces need to fit the new schemes on both sides of the ball. Until you see what they are doing(scheme) and how they are doing it you really can't tell if the personnel is correct or not. I believe the new coaches will be better then the last ones. I liked Sporano and think he was a good man and may be a good coach down the road as he was willing to change. All his coaches were brought in for him. What happened the last 4 years from players, to coaches, to blackout of info was all Parcells doing. Put the blame in the right place and give these guys a chance. You think your comments and showing what you are like makes a player want to come to Miami? The national media picks up on you fans and the local media. They are not down here covering the Phins. The fans and the local media need to change to improve the national perception. You are just blaming everyone else instead of taking responsibility for your part in this.

I've never seen a pro QB worse then Henne. Jaquar fans better hope Gabbert doesnt get injured lol
