The Dolphins are rebuilding but will they admit it?

There is one word that owners around the NFL hate to use in front of their fanbase: Rebuilding.

The word means forget about this year. The word means that whatever we've been doing wasn't right and we need to start over. The word is synonymous with, we're falling off the NFL map for a year or two.

Oh, and the word is a great way to not sell tickets.

And so it will be interesting to see if Dolphins owner Stephen Ross utters the word today when he meets with media at lunch time because, let's be real folks, the Miami Dolphins are in full on rebuild mode now.

That's how it looks when you're trading Brandon Marshall and not signing either an equally talented or equally experienced replacement. The Dolphins will replace Marshall with a draft pick. You know how often rookie wide receiver make a big difference for their new teams? Do the homework. It is rare.

That's how it looks when you cut Yeremiah Bell, who was probably declining and too expensive but was also the glue in the deep secondary. The Dolphins may re-sign Bell or they may not. Either way, it is not a difference making move. Bell has so far garnered little attention in free agency so there's the idea other teams don't think tons about him so far. And if Miami goes in another direction, the likely way to address it is in the latter (cheaper) parts of free agency or, again, the draft. Rebuilding.

Once the Dolphins failed to land Peyton Manning and he picked Denver, the Dolphins didn't deem Matt Flynn worthy of big money and I was told by a Dolphins source that Alex Smith priced himself out of their market. So the Dolphins are going with a QB competition between Matt Moore and David Garrard. The Dolphins will also probably draft a quarterback.

Let's see ... Miami's grand promise of finally finding a franchise quarterback is headed unquestionably down the path of having two veterans who have never been franchise QBs and probably a rookie to develop. The two veterans are signed for only one year each. One.

Tell me that doesn't feel like you're rebuilding. Anyone with eyes sees it.

The Dolphins haven't been big spenders in free agency. They are ramping up bigtime for the draft. And I'm hearing more and more whispers from organization sources that you'll not be hearing talk of displacing the Patriots in 2012 because, well, they're as finished a product as you can have in the NFL.

And the Dolphins are a start up production.

Rebuild!

I have a hard time believing if Peyton Manning had come to the team the Dolphins would have been in this mode. They would have been led by a 36-year-old QB that needed talented added quickly for a run that will last a relatively short period of time.

But once Manning eliminated the Dolphins, the Dolphins apparently eliminated the idea of really and truly competing for a title in 2012. Their moves are making that plain. They're planning for a title run in two or three years more than they are this year.

They are rebuilding. The only question now is whether Ross will admit as much today.

The ultimate sign of rebuilding: Riley Reiff with the number 8 pick!

What most people complain about was pretty clearly laid out in the past month or so. Maybe you just failed to pay attention to it.
Good/Solid WRs by committee.
Build through draft not FA.

Is it true that there is a fan protest at 3 pm Friday outside of One Herald Plaza in Miami? Fans protesting to get rid of Armando and actually get a Dolphins fan to cover the team.

I have no problem rebuilding. The team did nothing with Marshall and Bell. It has done nothing with all the players over the past 10 years. So rebuild. Let's get some young talent that will last a number of years.

We can't look to the past to get a glimpse of our future guys. Philbin has a totally different idea of the players he wants for his system. His olinemen need to be smaller and more athletic (than Sparano liked). His WRs need to be smaller and quicker and run great routes. His QB needs to have great footwork and go through their reads.

I wouldn't look at the players that would have fit on the team last year as potential draft candidates this year.

Whey to say it dolfnman. Let win with Our players!

Mando is an idiot but will he admit it?

FIRE IRELAND

Why does this incompetent geek have so much support. He thinks he is smarter than he is which isn't very, and this franchise has lost fans and games since his arrival. FIRE HIM and let him go to a division rival.

Mr. Ross, ou can't be that dumb.

WipeTime,
What does rebuilding mean? Isn't every team rebuilding every year? Isn't it just a matter of what players are available that meet your needs and passing on the ones that don't or are over priced?

Why is it the teams making a bunch of moves in FA are not rebuilding, but we who have done very little are rebuilding?

If we'd signed Manning for $20 million we couldn't have afforded to re-sign Soliai or sign any other FAs so we definitely would not have been rebuilding and Armando would still be whining like a little girl.

Mando is an idiot but will he admit it?

Great question.

The only thing they are really rebuilding is their philopiphies and football culture.

Look Parcell's team, and Sparano's wasn't going to get too far anyways. I they failed 3 season to reach the playoffs.

I agree with the rebuilding. Let Philbin rebuild the team to his liking.

You cannot be rebuilding for five years and be in a worse place. It is incompetence!

Mando the dolphins are rebuilding their offense not the entire team. They have new offensive coaches that have an entirely new system that requires the kind of players that fit their system. Don't you think we should rebuild an offense that ranked near the bottom of the league? If you call relasing yb rebuilding on defense you obviously havent watched the games close enough while your shoving hot dogs in your face and chumming it up with your media pals. Although yb does lead the team in tackles Im almost postitive he leads the team in missed tackles and he doesnt make very many impact plays anymore(hands of stone). He used to be a superior blitzer which he is not anymore. He is a major liability in pass coverage who definetly cannot stick with the speedy tight ends in our division. I understand he is the leader of the secondary but by getting rid of him maybe a young guy like Davis will step up and assume that role.

thavafin and dolfdan are on point with their posts. Parcells WAS a great football mind. WAS. His system looks like a joke in today's NFL. We'll see this year what Sparano's mind is like, but all signs point to him still not getting the new style of the NFL. He's tied to the 3 yards and a cloud of dust approach, and that's just not going to beat New England (or any other team that can put up points with ease).

The philosophy NEEDED to be changed. The culture NEEDED to be updated. Rebuilding NEEDED to happen if this team was ever going to go anywhere. Might as well start right away.

"And I'm hearing more and more whispers from organization sources....."

Armando, why are your sources "whispering"? They obviously wouldn't be seen dead with you in public! A why don't they have anything interesting or worthwhile to tell you?

Armando is becoming increasingly bitter and snarky because everybody in the Dolphins organization avoids him like the plague... but will he admit it?

Rebuilding should start with tanking the season for Matt Barkley. We should know by now true building starts with getting a franchise calibre qb in house.

Trade out of the 1st rd for a 2013 1st rd pick. Trade Jake Long for a 1st rd pick and whatever other picks he can garner. Go into 2013 with 3 #1 and at least 2 #2 picks.

If you're going to truly rebuild. Then lay down a plan to truly do it right.

THe only reason why Mando wanted Tebow here is because he is a fellow bible beater. Please keep religon and football seperate. Besides Tebow wouldnt like you, nobody really does.

Its obvious to me that Ireland will be fired in 2012 when we go 4 and 12 isnt it obvious to anyone else?

If Miami was rebuilding, I could live with that. But I don't believe that is the plan. If it is, they need to trim some more off the roster. Karlos Dansby isn't worth 11 mil.

I dont think dolfans have much problem with a rebuild itself. But if this rebuild begans to resemble the last one. There will be hell to pay in Miami.

If vits a rebuild and we're either positioned or have the balls to trade up for Matt Barkley in 2013. Mr. Ross will begin to see 2013 season tickets flying off the presses.

Jon,

I've been saying all offseason Karlos Dansby's the richest ilb to never even at least become a pro bowl alternate. He's untradable considering money vs performance. He needs to renegotiate or face getting cut.

It like the Dolphins are building to be semi competitive, you either rebuild and turn the whole roster for more draft picks or you're trying to be a playoff caliber team. Which one is it Ross? Clueless Owner and GM!

Keeping Ireland around for another rebuild is insane. The decision making from this team has been horrendous for years.

Dansby is an above average nfl ilb. But for $11 million a year need to be a perrenial pro bowler. Anything short's pure disappointment.

YG, Dansby needs to be cut ASAP or traded

Also, if rebuilding, Jeff Ireland can not blow draft picks this time around "doubling down" in the draft. Even when he has hit we've ended up with backup calibre players at best.

Even when he has doubled down using one of the 1st rd picks. That first round guy has usually been a average starter at best. All of this must change.

I dont understand why everyone HATES Ireland so much...In his first full season under control, last year, he drafted pretty good and added reggie bush for a swap of 6th round picks. He also signed Matt Moore who did pretty well. All the anger everyone is directing at Ireland SHOULD be directed at Parcells. He is the one who drafted Henne and White. He is the one who bolted town once he failed to secure a qb. He is the one who drafted Long over Ryan. All those moves have his fingerprints all over them. Parcells left Ireland here to fix his mess. The guy has a sorry personality but atleast give him the opportunity to get this fixed. All this negativity is not helping anything!

Right now, most dolfans have a far greater problem with Jeff Ireland doing rebuilding II than the actuial rebuilding process itself.

If Ireland approaches "rebuildingII" exactly the way rebuildI was approached. It will only amount to just more of the same. Mediocrity!

Good to read a lot of posters critically analyzing Mando's post today and not simply picking up the pitchforks.

I don't know how you can fully analyze the Miami Dolphins offseason when the most important part is still a month away.

Especially when the current regime has the gameplan that you build through the draft, re-sign your own that merit it, and add complimentary pieces externally in free agency.

I would bet dollars to donuts that the same people applauding the Mario Williams acquisition will also be laughing at the Bills in three years when Mario is spent and the Bills have a huge albatross of a contract.

Point is, free agency kills.

Agreed that the Dolphins need to draft better. That is what I'm most critical about with this regime. And stop drafting SCARED!!!

FA's look at Ireland like he's a leper. Thats not about to change.

Slam,

Dont fool yourself. The Parcellians only have a good draft record in Miami when drafting a 1st rd olineman(Long, Pouncey). No one in Ireland's 1st full draft(2011) looks like a certain pro bowler but Pouncey. Pouncey looks like he could be a pro bowler playing C or G.

Also with his brother Marquis in Pittsburgh as a center too. Pounsey may have a better perrenial pro bowl future playing og.

"I have a hard time believing if Peyton Manning had come to the team the Dolphins would have been in this mode. They would have been led by a 36-year-old QB that needed talented added quickly for a run that will last a relatively short period of time."

If we didn't have $20 million to give Manning in the first place we would have had to cut more than Yeremiah Bell and we still wouldn't have the cash to add talent quickly.

Question: Armando, are you not very good at math?

The FINS will compete....no two ways about it...we will be in the WC chase to the end....maybe competing for the AFC EAST CROWN is the defence shows up early and often....

Matt Moore has shown that he can beat average teams....and we should have alot of those on our schedule this year....Matt Moor MUST show that he can beat abover average tams.....THIS year...if he does that...BAM...fat contract from the FINS...or another team wanting a QB....everything is aligned for a FINS playoff run...

How much money can the Dolphins save by cutting Dansby? Or trade him? Why keep him, he is getting older and is one of the highest paid players on the team!

In 2008, I was a "lone wolf" screaming 11-5 and the afc east champs was the worst thing that could have happened to us at the time. A team finishing 1-15 a year prior has absolutely no business at all drafting 27th in the draft only one year later.

Folks, that exactly where the problem began. It turned us into a fa ho making many bad deals. Then came the shotty "double-down draft philosophy" compounded by plain average at best draft decisions.

I agree with above comments from Reg. I might not be happy that Miami does not win the SuperBowl every year. I might not always like the choices that the GM or owners make. What I do like is I have been a Miami fan since 1968. I have had many great years with Griese and Marino. Had some bad years with Cleo and others. What I can say is with all the bad years I never once said that I would switch my team. When the Dolphins only won 1 game against Baltimore I celebrated like the just won the Big 1. That is what fans do. It is OK to be pissed when they lost a game you know they should have won. It is OK that they did not get Peyton Manning, (who just had 4 surgeries). Alex smith was a 1 year wonder. Not so big on the guy our new coach let go. I always hear that Philben knows him best. Well I have a good feeling Philben did know him best. That is why he is not here. I think Moore is a very good QB. We need to stop matching everyone to Dan. Dan is gone now. I don't want Dan. He never won the superbowl. Win everygame and lose the big 1 sucks. Ask the Eagles Fans who want to get rid of Andy Reed. Air your laundry and ask to get better players and coaches but if you say I am leaving and going to ride the tails of another team well then be my guest. When Greatness comes back our way don't jump back on and tell us what a great fan you are. Stay with your new team. We don't need you. I wish I lived in Miami so I could go to every game.

And on the rebuilding issue, we're not rebuilding. The defense is a top-10, if not a top-5 D. We lost two starters. Odrick will not only capably fill in for Kendall, but will outperform him because he's a complete player. Y Bell? One of my favorites, but not the dynamic ballhawk defender we need. On O, I agree that not replacing Marshall to this point is concerning. But there wasn't a Marshall-like receiver in free agency, and he clearly doesn't fit into what Philbin is trying to do with team chemistry. So hopefully something good will do down on that front. So, again, this isn't a rebuilding process. We haven't broken it apart. Most everything is still in place and we have the rest of free agency and draft still to go, not to mention trades that might be in the works. So everyone, chill out.

Next year we will watch Timmy Tebow account for 4 to 6 TDs in the 2 games the Jets dominate the Fins. Go Jets.

Yesterdays Gone,

Drafting a pro bowler is good since we only have one on the team(long). The book is still out on Daniel Thomas. The guy did show flashes last year. Jimmy Wilson looks like a pretty good player as well. You have to give these guys a little type to develop. Not everyone is a pro bowler their rookie year. Sparano is gone because he was not developing players. Lets see if this staff is any better.

Slam @ 10:05.....

that could be the best post ever.....

If you guys skipped over it...you should really go back and read the post @ 10:05....maybe some on here can gain a little perspective...

Dolphins need to re-sign Vernon Carey for RT (he already is a huge cap hit whether he is on the team or not), then sign Jake Scott for RG. Cut Dansby and sign Wheeler. Add LB depth in the draft. Then add Tannehill and a WR and TE in the draft.

Im a Dolphins fan, Armando is a HATER. i would like to be optimistic about the dolphins chances. But the place i go to read up on The Miami Dolphins, is...... The Miami Herald. we haven't drafted yet or went through training camp. and Armando is writing us out. Armando couldn't bring The Dolphins to the Superbowl IN MADDEN ON ROOKIE, IN 10 YEARS! Stop turning the fans against the franchise. The Miami Dolphins need support, not for our local news paper to tell us how jacked up we are.

LETS STOP BOYCOTTING OUR TEAM AND BOYCOTT ARMANDO

Kris, I've commented on the felxibility the Dolphins have at the QB position and it being a good thing. Come the draft and/or into next year, the Dolphins will be in the position of being able to choose who their QB will be, not have anyone forced upon them and hoping they pan out.

It's a good thing.

Weve been rebuuilding our house out of straw for some time now... You think maybe we would start using bricks? I learned that story at about 4...

Who cares what they admit on March 26, 2012?

The season begins in late August and the only thing that matters is what happens on the field during games.

The team's performance will be 100% dependent on whether Philbin is a great coach or another Cam Cameron.

No Freaking Way. Ross is a total jerk. Teams that are re-building typically offer significant discounts to their fan base as a way of saying "sorry we're going to suck, for a while" but Ross needs to lie it up, and pretend that we're a contender to keep charging Dolphins fans top of the market prices for those seats, overpriced parking, etc.

Who wants to pay full price for a ticket that's worth 30 cents on the dollar the day you buy it?

In 2012 Dolphins either need make wr or olb thier #1 pick should they choose to use it this year. Reaching for a qb(Tannehill) could be disastrous if not panning out.

We could wait until next year to draft a true 1st rd qb. Especially if Matt Moore isnt considered a true starting nfl calibre qb. We should finish somewhere between having the 5th thru 10th pick in 2013's draft. That's still qb turf folks!

Its gonna take 3 years to clean up Irescum's mess.

Armando - Your letter as a fan was out of line and completely inappropriate. that is bush leauge!

If you want to get the team to hear the voice of the fans then you should cut/paste appropriate and well thought out blog posts, keeping them anonymous. This keeps you in the media reporting and out of the speaking for the fans business.

Armando....

You SHOULD be THANKING those 30 protesters that you claimed were going about things the wrong way.....

to date they have accompished the following...

1. Got you a phone interview with IRELAND....

2. Got Ross to call @ least 1 season ticket holder....which you also wrote about...

3. Got Ross to hold a media lunch to possibly explain the state of the franchise.....

Seems like those 30 protesters are the BEST thing to happen to your carreer....

in the NFL unless you have a frachize QB you're rebuilding. So 20 teams are in rebuild mode every year. Dolphins have been rebuilding since marino left.

As YG said, most fans don't mind rebuilding, it's the fact that the 're-builder' is Jeff Ireland. The way the NFL is presently constructed, a good GM and HC can turn around a team in 3 years.

Do we have a good HC? Maybe but we probably won't know for a while.....he's a rook, remember? Do we have a good GM? Not just NO but HELL NO! We have zero (0) chance as long as Ireland has anything to do with the Dolphins.

every year at this time we are excited about the upcoming draft! every years the posters have very good picks and ideas about who they like. every year we are disappointed as our FO strikes out with zero "value added picks",no weapons and reaches for irelands acorns. instead of signing FA mcgahee,we waste 3 picks on daniel thomas? it just doesnt make sense. rb's were not "high value" and we get a guy that runs upright with injury concerns instead of addressing other areas of need? how many offensive weapons have we selected in the past drafts?

phinswins24,

if you think Armando is an obnoxious hater now, just wait for his opinions on our draft picks! "Overreach!" "No value!" "Terrible!"

Mando you are a loser. I hope the herald reassigns your sorry ass to cover the fiu water polo team. Every blog you post or article you write is negative. You try to pour gasoline on the fire. You are part of the problem!!Herald please reassing this guy and get some young, energetic, new blood in there covering the dolphins.

Armando,

Great to see you tell it like it is, and for representing the fans demand for positive action by the Dolphin Stooges.

SAM.........

LAST YEAR OUR GARAGE MANAGER DRAFTED ........

D.THOMAS.... A BUST

GATES.......... A BUST

POUNCY........... VERDICT STILL OUT......

I think it's important for Armando to be realistic with his posts, so I'm ok with the negativity hear and there.

Although sometimes it seems like the negativity is geared more towards how the Dolphins treat the media rather than how they are managing their team.......in my humble opinion......a little bit of a side agenda in the feel of the reporting.
