« David Garrard joins the Miami Dolphins | Main | Jeff Ireland speaks to the media »

Jeff Ireland is not the devil

This post is not going to be popular. This post absolutely will not fit the current popular narrative surrounding the Dolphins the past week. And I don't take this undertaking lightly because I don't enjoy taking a bullet for someone who is not my family or close friend.

But ...

This Jeff Ireland hatred is getting more than a tad ridiculous.

To begin, I cannot say I agree with every single move Ireland makes. I don' agree with his approach with the media. I am aware agents talk behind his back (if they do it with me I'm assuming they do it with others) and complain of an arrogance that is baffling and approach that sometimes borders on bullying.

But I also do not agree he is a total screwup and gets everything wrong -- maybe that's because he doesn't.

I thought the David Garrard signing was a very good one, assuming the projected use for him is what I believe it will be and isn't followed by a crazy chase of Alex Smith or Tim Tebow. I thought the re-signing of Paul Soliai at a bargain price -- $6 million per year when he had a bigger deal on the table with Denver and for a price that is half of what the team paid last year -- was a coup that got whitewashed in the negative theme of the day.

I like the fact the Dolphins held to their guns in coming to a organizational value for Matt Flynn, remembering that coach Joe Philbin knows this guy as well as anyone. People are saying Flynn picked the Seahawks over the Dolphins. I think it's more accurate to say the Dolphins picked something else over Flynn because I don't believe they wanted to outbid Seattle. I like that Miami made a move to explore Alex Smith. I like that Miami won't be paying Smith $8 million a year because that's crazy money considering seven years of watching this guy has offered only one season of promising production.

I understand (I think) why the Dolphins traded Brandon Marshall. I like Marshall and think he's an engaging guy. He really is great if you speak with him. Guy's charming. But he is a trouble magnet. He is immature and the lack of a father figure in his life gives him no foundation on which to sometimes understand right from wrong and being an adult from being a kid. I believe unless that changes, he's going to be in trouble again eventually. So the move to jettison him is logical on several levels.

I also understand and cannot criticize Ireland for letting Kendall Langford go. Quick, what was the last game-changing play he made? What was his signature moment in Dolphins history? Correct, he didn't have one. He was a grunt, a role-player albeit a nice one. Certainly, he's not a guy worth $6 million per year and a $12 million guarantee, which is what he got from St. Louis.

And, because I am not a hypocrite, I also cannot rip the idea of cutting Yeremiah Bell. Bell is one of my favorite players. He's a tough blankety blank. He's a good locker room guy. But he's 34 years old and his play isn't likely to get better. And for years I've urged the Dolphins to be one of those teams that jettisons players before they totally break down and lose it rather than waiting an extra year and suffering the actual fast decline while the player is on the roster.

The Dolphins cut Bell on Monday before he completely fades out. I cannot rip them for that, considering he brings $4.3 million in cap relief. (Also, we don't know if Miami offered Bell a chance to cut his salary and he refused or not.)

So all these moves that Ireland is getting destroyed for ... tell me how they were terrible. Tell me what he should have done.

The Garrard signing, by the way, is being panned because David Garrard is not a franchise quarterback and Ireland has promised a reach for a franchise QB this offseason. "We need to add a quarterback that can get us over the hump," he's told The Miami Herald.

No kidding. That's been the case for a decade, including five offseasons during Ireland's employment in Miami. And Garrard is not that guy.

But Ireland hasn't said he is. Ireland hasn't said that's his signature QB move of the spring. Seems to me Garrard is a move to add a veteran backup presence who might get a shot to win a job in the short-term. Hello? Compeition is good.

Unless I miss my guess, the Dolphins aren't done adding at quarterback. I believe they will draft a kid on which the club's future hopes will rest. At least that is my sense.

Maybe that rookie will be a bust. Maybe he'll be a star. The point is to rip Ireland for a move not yet made in an offseason not yet complete is hating for hating's sake.

On that front, there's plenty headed in Ireland's direction now. I hear there is a fan protest scheduled for today to rip Ireland. On Sunday, Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark ripped Ireland on twitter and blamed him for Miami's ills and talked of how "the guy running things is not a good" person.

Then yesterday on NFL Network, former Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter blew up Ireland on national television. He blamed the Dolphins inability to close on, say, Peyton Manning and Flynn on Ireland.

"I think Jeff Ireland has a big part to do with it," Porter said. "I don't think when you come in being recruited by him, you totally believe things coming out of his mouth. I think he's a guy that's not trustworthy. He really doesn't hold up to what a GM's supposed to be."

Well, I really don't think Porter holds up to what a man is supposed to be. Porter is a great guy to have on a team when things are good. But as soon as things go bad, he becomes part of the problem. And as soon as he's no longer getting his way or is out of contract, he bites the hand that feeds him. He previously blew up Cam Cameron. He previously blew up Tony Sparano. He previously blew up Mike Tomlin.

The guy has a history for ripping people that either cut him, let him go in free agency, or stood up to him. So while you don't have to dismiss his criticism, at least understand where it originates.

By the way, this idea that Miami can't land anyone is getting on my nerves. No, they didn't get Harbaugh. No, they didn't land Fisher. No, they didn't get Manning. Which one of those was Ireland responsible for?

Manning, of course.

Well, the Dolphins didn't get Manning. And neither did San Francisco, Arizona, or Tennessee. The Jets, Kansas City, and Seattle all have good to outstanding GMs. None of them could even get a meeting with Manning. So Ireland is a bad guy because the Dolphins swung and missed on Peyton Manning?

Look, I do not agree with every move Ireland makes. To me, the Manning chase was a waste of time that I didn't agree with. I would have been in Mario Williams' jock and tried to sign him and I would have outbid Kansas City for Eric Winston. It would have been two blue chip additions to the team and my overall talent would have gone way up.

Instead the Dolphins are shopping at K-Mart with Artis Hicks and Jamaal Westersomebody.

I also would have gone to the wall (yes, even giving up FOUR first round picks) to land Robert Griffin III. I would have gotten my franchise QB one way or another. Ireland didn't.

But does that make the guy a loser? A man to revile?

Someon hacked into Ireland's Wikipedia page Tuesday and edited in some unkind things about him being born in a Denny's parking lot etc... Maybe that sounds funny to you. Maybe you're cheering the imagination of that move. I guess I'm not talking to you.

I am talking to the folks who are thinking for themselves. Break down the moves on their own merit. Tell me what you would have done. Tell me where you would depart from the current course.

Be fair.

Obviously, Ireland hasn't gotten all his moves right in the past. By the way, no one does. And the pressure is on him to land some, you know, actual stars this offseason because the Dolphins don't have any of those.

He might do that. He might not. But I'm not ready to say this guy is the devil for blowing it when we're only one week into free agency and the draft is on the horizon. I don't judge a team's gameday performance in the second quarter.

I wait until the game's over.

Well said...

MORE TIM TEBOW JERSEYS WERE SOLD THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL

GO TEBOW!

Smith fixes philbin scheme

Just to round up. I can think of many more reasons to indict Ireland but a glaring one is his mismanagement of the team's cap. How on earth this team is so cap poor with no playmakers to speak of and in a place with no state income tax.

Go chew on that one Mando and spin it. No defense for that one.

TEBOW!

TEBOW!

TEBOW!

I believe Fins aren't done with QB search.

Smith and Tebow are still in play.

And a late round draft QB.

I still want to see vince Young in the mix.

Get a clue Armando

http://www.finsnation.com/fins_nation/2012/03/jeff-ireland-is-a-dipshit.html

There is a real article on what really has happened.

Did Ireland Pay you to write this fluff piece?

Ray Lucas or Tim Tebow?

We didn't sign Garrard to fool anyone about the draft.

We signed Garrard because Ireland is desperate and we have no legitimate back up to Moore. Remember? We let Henne walk with no compensation and apparently NO other QB's will work for Ireland.

Armando can make excuses and defend Ireland all he wants. The facts are the facts.

Ross wanted nothing more than a franchise QB. To fill the bill, Ireland was unable to work a trade for RGIII. He couldn't even get Manning to visit even thought he was ALREADY in South Beach(He tried to cover by claiming a family emergency-Nice).

Flynn? He knew Sherman, loves Philbin, but ah, Ireland? Apparently the deal breaker.

Garrard to throw people off our trail? Ah.......NO!

Garrard, because he's the only guy desperate enough and out of work.

Ross wanted a Franchise QB and the best Ireland could deliver is an aging, 10 year unemployed BACKUP!

Nice work Jeffy, now let me ask you a question about your Mother. Did she have ANY kids that weren't BRAIN DEAD!

@Yesterday's Gone
you goota be a fool if you think cleveland is going to take tannehill at #4 !!! isn't going to happen. everybody thinks just because cleveland isnt going after a Q/b in free agency that they want Tannehill LOL !!!! Cleveland i think is happy with what they got and want to build around the Q/B they have..

McClown or Tebow?

YG/DB......

PLEASE TALK TO US OF ABOUT YOUR VIEWS OF OUR NEW HC PHILPIN WHO SEEMS TO BE A YES MAN TO OUR GARAGE MANAGER ........

Cleo Lemon or Tebow?

Armando, I guess you're also occupying considerable Dolphins cap space, especially after this post. Before you came across to me as an hypocrite know I you have proved it. This is the most biased and contradictory article I have read from a sport writer.
Our team has not made the playoffs in three seasons, and after five years the most important position in the game has not been addressed. He has to go; Fans hate him, Players hate him, Agents hate him, and probably you would also hate him, If you didn't get the revenues that you get by being on his side. It's a pity there're no more Miami Dolphins blogs, your reputation is gonna take a big shot after this, by the way all the people agreeing with you in this post have the vision of a mole.

Joey Harrington or Tebow?

Scott Mitchell or Tim Tebow?

Pat White or Tim Tebow?

YG/DB POST @ 12;38 IS CLASSIC ,RIGHT ON THE MONEY ......

HOW IN HELL OUR GARAGE MANAGER BECAME OUR GM ?

Jeff Row...First off. David Garrard as a smoke screen for drafting a guy???Do you know how that sounds? That is the most transparant smoke screen of all time if that was indeed the plan for the team.. Granted, the team may not have Tannehill in the plans..But Garrard isn't the reason..

Maybe I'm just trying to make my point so bad that I'm the only one that see's it this way(bad thing)..I just believe that the Browns have Colt McCoy...Colt McCoy????? They are in a worse situation then we are..And they are going to pass on Tannehill why??

Like I said earlier...I don't know much about Tannehill. For a team desperate for a quarterback he isn't good enough at 4..but he is a 8???

Posted by: Darryl Dunphy

They done it every year man ... smokescreens is what Jeffy does best ! you obviously haven't been watching the last 4 years

Garrard & Moore or Tim Tebow?

I think that throwing Ireland under the bus is a good thing! After all, we do still live in the United States of America where you are allowed to express your opinions.

If I'm not mistaken, the "Fire Ireland" campaign began last year when the "Suck for Luck" campaign took off. The fans showed their displeasure with the team by not going to games. Which caused the owner to buy up tickets. Our owner, Ross, didn't get the message...so, now there's a protest planned.

I do question the timing of the protest, however. Wait until the season plays itself out. Win and all will be forgotten. Lose and it's good-by, Jeff! There's no one else left to blame but Ireland...

Culpepper or Tim Tebow?

TigerSam,

Your list of "Ireland Mistakes" is wrong. The only valid one is the unfortunate question to Dez Bryant. The rest are Parcells or Ross. It's ok to not like Ireland. But at least do it for the right reasons.

TigerSam.......Excellent point regarding the pass on Winston....and right on in your assessment of Ireland's personality....which on a scale of 1 to 10 is a zero...

Are there multiple Home's? Or are all the Home's the same person?

I'm confused

Henne or Tim Tebow?

Cutting Bell?....led the team the past four years in tackles and the only good safety on the team?...David Garrard TD's in 9 seasons and a bad back?...yeah Irelands just great

Guys,

There are only two reason in the entire nfl that Tannehill's name has now entered into 1st rd conversation:

1. Miami
2. Cleveland

Most the talent evaluators almost all agree Tannehill needs to sit at least TWO seasons.

If the only TWO teams Miami and Cleveland werent so desperate for a qb. Absolutely no way would Tannehill's name be in 1st rd consideration. Seems like this fanbase is as desperate as it's team!

FIRST AND FORMOST HOMEY YOU ARE A CLOWN:

ARMANDO:

YOU MISSED AGAIN.

PEOPLE ARE NOT MAD AT JUST THE FACT HE MISSED ON MANNING BUT HE ALWAYS MISSING.

WHAT GOOD CAME FROM HIM?

YOU WANT TO GIVE JEFF AND SPARANO A PASS BUT NO ONE ELSE ON THE TEAM ONE.

YOU ARE OK WITH WHAT HE's DOING BECAUSE YOU're NOT A DOLPHIN's FAN YOU JUST COVER THE TEAM.

WELL IF HE HAVE DONE SUCH A GREAT JOB WHY IS IT THAT WE HAVE SO MANY HOLES ON THIS TEAM AND NOT ENOUGH CAP SPACE TO FILL THEM?

WHY DO AS YOU PUT IT HAVE ANYBODY ON THIS TEAM MAKING BIG BUCKS BUT WE HAVE TO GET RID OF BELL TO SAVE CAP ROOM?

I'm ALL FOR GETTING RID OF A PLAYER BEFORE THEIR DECLINE BUT THEN WHY GO AFTER 2 QBs THAT's DECLINING?

JEFF IS A SNAKE.

HE's THAT TYPE THAT WILL TALK ABOUT PEOPLE BEHIND THIER BACK. THEN GET IN THIER FACE A SMILE AND BE FRIENDLY.

PEOPLE ARE NOT JUDGING HIM BY MISSING WHEN HE HAS BUT BY NOT PRODUCING AT ALL.

HE IS THE RYAN LEAF OF GMs.

CHAD HENNE COULD HAVE BATTLE MOORE FOR THE STARTING JOB.

BUT HE BROUGHT IN A QB THAT's 10 YEARS CHAD SENIOR FOR ABOUT THE SAME CHAD WOULD HAVE COST.

BUT IT WAS A GREAT READ.

Garrard should have read 68 TD"s in 9 seasons sorry

More football players crying on ESPN

today Hine Ward. lol

tee-hee

YG...EXACTLY...You get it. My first post about this scenario addressed the same thing...We would trade up to 3..Which I believe we would have to do. And we didn't trade up to 2?????? That is the crux of the biscuit right there...That is why I said hold tight call the bluff..

It is hilarious to me that some would ignore the quarterback problems in Cleveland..They may indeed pass on Tannehill..They are going to do everything in thw world they can do to make it appear he is thier guy.

These crying players could use Tim Tebow's shoulder to cry on when retireing

@Darryl Dunphy
and we aren't going to buy it ... we will get Tannehill at 8... we are playing Chess and garrard is our insurance policy

You are an idiot. Mando, I mean. Well, and Ireland too. But if I was only talking about Ireland I would have said, "You are a creepy, socially inept, idiot." But in this case, just Mando, is an idiot.

Armando, if Jeff Ireland is not to be blame, then who is? We deserve an answer. Thanks,

Who had the best cry on ESPN today?

The Elway retiring baby crying w big face?

The sniffling cry of Peyton leaving Indy?

The sobbing cry of the black Korean Hines Ward

tee - hee ;)

JeffRow,

We'll see. Cleveland and Miami are the two desperate kitties whom single handidly has pushed Tannehill's name into 1st rd consideration.

Cleveland does have a #22 pick too, but thier afraid Miami takes Tannehill at #8 and out of desperation they probably will. Cleveland has two options:

1. Trade thier #4 pick down to #7( one spot ahead of us)

2. Take Tannehill at #4 because the other qb desperate team(us) will take him at #8.

Cleveland doesnt wanna take Tannehill at #4 either. But they feel forced to do it because we sit at #8.

The worst thing this team can do is reach for a QB in the draft. If Sherman really thinks Tannehill will be a star, then fine draft him. Do not take a 2nd round QB!! We need a blue chipper. With our luck they'll take Cousins or somebody, say he looks good in camp, and then when we actually do have a chance at a blue chipper next season we won't take him. At least we didn't waste a bunch of money on Flynn or Smith. Let's get Barkley, Jones, or one of the other two guys next season unless the fins really surprise us this year and earn a late draft pick.

OUR DONKEY HOME WAS WRONG AGAIN..........

MANNING ?

Hot dog vender can throw better than Tannenhill who lost all those games and got coach Sherman fired, so the Dolphin should then hire him as their new superstar coach

Armando,

Excellent post. However what we have here is a mob wanting nothing more than a public hanging. It's useless to reason with a mob. They are too busy screaming to listen.

We can go round and round about whether Irleand has done a good or bad job for this team.
Personally, I'm not a fan of his. He's too conservative, and doesn't apparently come across well to potential players and coaches. That said...

Stop judging this years off-season by the FA signings alone. The draft isn't that far away, and I think Armando is right on. We will be drafting a QB. Unless Tebow miraculously becomes he new target (I doubt) we will be drafting a rookie.
That rookie would benefit from a veteran Garrard being next to him on the team. Moore certainly isn't going to help the kid, and Garrard knows he's gone in a year. Does sound like an attempt for some watch-n-learn tactics.

Other things to complain about with Irleand? Sure, lots. But not the current QB FA "misses".

Every team but ONE missed on Manning. At least we got an interview.

Flynn was a reach. We simply didn't believe he was franchise. Nor did most other teams. Seattle thought he might be, and took a shot. Time will tell.

A. Smith wasn't worth it. He's barely worth it to his playoff team. Good choice there.

Garrard? Mentor at best, security at worst. One year, and gone. Nothing wrong with this.

Draft a QB? Heck yes. If we get it right, we're set for possibly 15 years. I'm ALL IN.

I question not going after R. Nelson. And maybe not ponying up for Winston at RT. If Philbin thinks we have our RT on roster, then fine. I've always said, we have a heckuva lot of young OL talent. Aren't any of them coachable?

So, I blame Ireland for plenty of things. But this off-season is actually going fairly close to my hopes so far. The draft IS and HAS BEEN my big watermark. We get that right, and this team finally gets on track.

Armando great column, judge your GM on his body of work (and no one in this league is perfect), not someone who wants to be popular with players or fans. He needs to be a cutthroat when it comes to the business side of the game. A GM should not draft on need or popularity, he should get the best players available and not necessary what the coach wants. Shula’s downfall was having the power on all decisions.

But I disagree with you on paying over-price free agents or trading the future to get RG3, you built a championship team mainly thru the draft and free agent here and there. If you need proof take a look at who Miami drafted from 1967 to 1969. If you need more proof check Miami’s picks after and see why we never won another Superbowl.

PS - If Payton had decided to come here (because he liked the weather) everyone would be calling Ireland a genius right now.

Ok, still don't how much the phins are paying Garrard.

All I've heard is it's a one year contract and NO guaranteed money.

Anybody?

Tannehill threw great!! 65% and alot of his throws were dropped by the reciever ... not bad if you ask me

Armando,

That was a thought provoking post and while I can see your point the bottom line is the entire leagues perception of Ireland and visa vie the Dolphins. From the moment Ireland uttered the words, "is/was your mother a prostitute?" compounded by multiple very public failures of chasing Harbaugh and Fisher then having to placate Sporano with a new contract cemented Ireland and the Dolphin Organizations reputation.... They are Bufoons! Thus beginning the downward spiral of missing out on "must sign" players like Winston and every other failure being judged with a jaundiced eye and adding to the pile of failures from which the only way out is to absolutely KILL in the draft and have a winning season or jettison Ireland. I'll reserve raising pitch fork and torch till the end of this season but that is this fans deadline for the "Ireland Situation".

Tannenhill, Moore & Chocolate Cake Black Garrrard = no sell outs, no one cares, no one goes to the games

Tebow jersey all time biggest selling jersey NFL history

Go Tebow!

Tebow played much better than Elway at this stage of his career

PERIOD

Jeff Row,

Garrard isn't a smoke screen.

The great offensive line Ireland and SpOrano put together has gotten our starting QB's injured the past two seasons.

Garrard is simply a backup.

Let me ask you this, you think Holmgren considers an out of work, aging Garrard as a significant enough piece to defer drafting a young QB this year?

Darryl Dunphy,

The greatest favor Cleveland could give all dolfans everywhere is to pass on Tannehill at #4. Many idiots cant see it, but that would make it safe for us to trade down. say to about 15th and pick up a extra 2nd rd pick.

Then take Tannehill at #15. Cleveland wouldnt pick again until #22. Miami and Cleveland are the only two teams that would draft Tannehill 1st rd.

But there is at least one "darkhorse team" that would take Tannehill at the back of the 1st rd. The New Orleans Saints. They franchised Breeze rather than give him a new contract and dont have a clearcut vision of a young qb presently on the roster leading into the future.

Tannenhill is a LOSER in football games

At the end of the day Tannenhill's performance = Loss

Heck ALoco can throw the poop from his diaper better than Tanny can throw a football to win

Armando, Jeff has proven over and over that he is a clown. Just like Ross. This QB episode is just another example of the Dolphin Circus. We, the fans, need to rally for an ownership change. Dolphins are going down the drain.

Brees

Mando,

Nice article. I do agree with the moves he has made this season so far. The problem might be it's a little late. Ireland has tarnished his reputation with others around the league. We have to look at his body of work as a whole and not just this season. He seems to be in over his head and is still learning on the job. I'm not sure if these latest moves will be enough to bring him back. He has a lot to make up for with his past dealings. Though the decisions as a whole so far this season have been sound. We will have to wait and see.

@odinseye
why cares what holmgren would do .. your missing my point... Jeffy and the dolphin brass have used a smokescreen every year they been here.
I dont think garrard will be on the team next year unless they miss out on the Q/b they want in the draft.

LET'S TRADE FOR TIM TEBOW! Fill Our other needs through the draft. And dust Ourselves off. Go DOLPHINS!
