« David Garrard joins the Miami Dolphins | Main | Jeff Ireland speaks to the media »

Jeff Ireland is not the devil

This post is not going to be popular. This post absolutely will not fit the current popular narrative surrounding the Dolphins the past week. And I don't take this undertaking lightly because I don't enjoy taking a bullet for someone who is not my family or close friend.

But ...

This Jeff Ireland hatred is getting more than a tad ridiculous.

To begin, I cannot say I agree with every single move Ireland makes. I don' agree with his approach with the media. I am aware agents talk behind his back (if they do it with me I'm assuming they do it with others) and complain of an arrogance that is baffling and approach that sometimes borders on bullying.

But I also do not agree he is a total screwup and gets everything wrong -- maybe that's because he doesn't.

I thought the David Garrard signing was a very good one, assuming the projected use for him is what I believe it will be and isn't followed by a crazy chase of Alex Smith or Tim Tebow. I thought the re-signing of Paul Soliai at a bargain price -- $6 million per year when he had a bigger deal on the table with Denver and for a price that is half of what the team paid last year -- was a coup that got whitewashed in the negative theme of the day.

I like the fact the Dolphins held to their guns in coming to a organizational value for Matt Flynn, remembering that coach Joe Philbin knows this guy as well as anyone. People are saying Flynn picked the Seahawks over the Dolphins. I think it's more accurate to say the Dolphins picked something else over Flynn because I don't believe they wanted to outbid Seattle. I like that Miami made a move to explore Alex Smith. I like that Miami won't be paying Smith $8 million a year because that's crazy money considering seven years of watching this guy has offered only one season of promising production.

I understand (I think) why the Dolphins traded Brandon Marshall. I like Marshall and think he's an engaging guy. He really is great if you speak with him. Guy's charming. But he is a trouble magnet. He is immature and the lack of a father figure in his life gives him no foundation on which to sometimes understand right from wrong and being an adult from being a kid. I believe unless that changes, he's going to be in trouble again eventually. So the move to jettison him is logical on several levels.

I also understand and cannot criticize Ireland for letting Kendall Langford go. Quick, what was the last game-changing play he made? What was his signature moment in Dolphins history? Correct, he didn't have one. He was a grunt, a role-player albeit a nice one. Certainly, he's not a guy worth $6 million per year and a $12 million guarantee, which is what he got from St. Louis.

And, because I am not a hypocrite, I also cannot rip the idea of cutting Yeremiah Bell. Bell is one of my favorite players. He's a tough blankety blank. He's a good locker room guy. But he's 34 years old and his play isn't likely to get better. And for years I've urged the Dolphins to be one of those teams that jettisons players before they totally break down and lose it rather than waiting an extra year and suffering the actual fast decline while the player is on the roster.

The Dolphins cut Bell on Monday before he completely fades out. I cannot rip them for that, considering he brings $4.3 million in cap relief. (Also, we don't know if Miami offered Bell a chance to cut his salary and he refused or not.)

So all these moves that Ireland is getting destroyed for ... tell me how they were terrible. Tell me what he should have done.

The Garrard signing, by the way, is being panned because David Garrard is not a franchise quarterback and Ireland has promised a reach for a franchise QB this offseason. "We need to add a quarterback that can get us over the hump," he's told The Miami Herald.

No kidding. That's been the case for a decade, including five offseasons during Ireland's employment in Miami. And Garrard is not that guy.

But Ireland hasn't said he is. Ireland hasn't said that's his signature QB move of the spring. Seems to me Garrard is a move to add a veteran backup presence who might get a shot to win a job in the short-term. Hello? Compeition is good.

Unless I miss my guess, the Dolphins aren't done adding at quarterback. I believe they will draft a kid on which the club's future hopes will rest. At least that is my sense.

Maybe that rookie will be a bust. Maybe he'll be a star. The point is to rip Ireland for a move not yet made in an offseason not yet complete is hating for hating's sake.

On that front, there's plenty headed in Ireland's direction now. I hear there is a fan protest scheduled for today to rip Ireland. On Sunday, Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark ripped Ireland on twitter and blamed him for Miami's ills and talked of how "the guy running things is not a good" person.

Then yesterday on NFL Network, former Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter blew up Ireland on national television. He blamed the Dolphins inability to close on, say, Peyton Manning and Flynn on Ireland.

"I think Jeff Ireland has a big part to do with it," Porter said. "I don't think when you come in being recruited by him, you totally believe things coming out of his mouth. I think he's a guy that's not trustworthy. He really doesn't hold up to what a GM's supposed to be."

Well, I really don't think Porter holds up to what a man is supposed to be. Porter is a great guy to have on a team when things are good. But as soon as things go bad, he becomes part of the problem. And as soon as he's no longer getting his way or is out of contract, he bites the hand that feeds him. He previously blew up Cam Cameron. He previously blew up Tony Sparano. He previously blew up Mike Tomlin.

The guy has a history for ripping people that either cut him, let him go in free agency, or stood up to him. So while you don't have to dismiss his criticism, at least understand where it originates.

By the way, this idea that Miami can't land anyone is getting on my nerves. No, they didn't get Harbaugh. No, they didn't land Fisher. No, they didn't get Manning. Which one of those was Ireland responsible for?

Manning, of course.

Well, the Dolphins didn't get Manning. And neither did San Francisco, Arizona, or Tennessee. The Jets, Kansas City, and Seattle all have good to outstanding GMs. None of them could even get a meeting with Manning. So Ireland is a bad guy because the Dolphins swung and missed on Peyton Manning?

Look, I do not agree with every move Ireland makes. To me, the Manning chase was a waste of time that I didn't agree with. I would have been in Mario Williams' jock and tried to sign him and I would have outbid Kansas City for Eric Winston. It would have been two blue chip additions to the team and my overall talent would have gone way up.

Instead the Dolphins are shopping at K-Mart with Artis Hicks and Jamaal Westersomebody.

I also would have gone to the wall (yes, even giving up FOUR first round picks) to land Robert Griffin III. I would have gotten my franchise QB one way or another. Ireland didn't.

But does that make the guy a loser? A man to revile?

Someon hacked into Ireland's Wikipedia page Tuesday and edited in some unkind things about him being born in a Denny's parking lot etc... Maybe that sounds funny to you. Maybe you're cheering the imagination of that move. I guess I'm not talking to you.

I am talking to the folks who are thinking for themselves. Break down the moves on their own merit. Tell me what you would have done. Tell me where you would depart from the current course.

Be fair.

Obviously, Ireland hasn't gotten all his moves right in the past. By the way, no one does. And the pressure is on him to land some, you know, actual stars this offseason because the Dolphins don't have any of those.

He might do that. He might not. But I'm not ready to say this guy is the devil for blowing it when we're only one week into free agency and the draft is on the horizon. I don't judge a team's gameday performance in the second quarter.

I wait until the game's over.

YG @ 1:47 - I don't think it has anything to do with being a "Tannehill fan". I don't believe there are any true "Tannehill fans."

It's about being a realist and looking at the situation and saying that there is a "real" possibility that the Phins take Tannehill with their 8th pick.

Minnesota took such a reach last year with Ponder and Jax with Gabbert, both of whom graded out as 2nd round picks last year. It's no biggie....under the new CBA, this isn't as risky and costly as it was before. If the Phins get Tannehill and over the course of the season determine he's not their guy....and they finish bottom of the barrell, they can go after Barkley or Landry Jones if they wish, with little consequence.

In the mean time, they will be getting a guy that most scouts have determined has a huge upside and a high ceiling. They won't be drafting him necessarily for what he can do NOW...but would he could potentially do in the future. Unfortunately, the "can do NOW" guys are off the board, and the only "can do NOW" guy in FA was Manning.

Sometimes it pays to just be realistic and enjoy the ride....stop getting yourself all worked up about it.

Craig, and the titans with locker. ...
And locker was taken in a similar spot last year, just saying ...
A pretty shrewd move if you ask me.

JS in LA,

Tannehills high td to int ratio confirms what his game to game wildly inconsistent completion percentage says.

Again...don't think there are Tannehill fans....just realists. Some of us won't be so willing to declare a brand new QB a bust right out of the gate as you seem to be.

Now...he throws up Tebow like stats in his first 12 starts I will get on the "he's a bust" wagon. Until then, only time will tell.

Ok Mando we can agree on the moves but at some point the brass has got to give us the fans the ones who buy the tickets and the merchandise, something to cheer for, look forward to and get excited about. Especially when they promised to us they were going to be aggressive and get their man at QB. That's all we ask as fans

One of Mando's worst articles ever.
Ireland is in the bottom 5 GMs in the league.
Whatever they're paying him is too much.
The whole QB fiasco/Garrard signing proves it.
The whole league is laughing at us and I'm tired of it.

He's 22 years old and has started 20 games. If you've got him all figured out simply by looking at his game by game stats then you're a Hell of a lot smarter than the 32 GMs in the league. The reality if NOBODY knows yet what he is and hopefully we wouldn't have to find out for another 2-3 yards down the road. I'm not quite sure what you have against the kid. I'd love to know YOUR plan for getting a franchise QB.

One last thing, I'll trust Sherman a lot more than you when it comes to Tannehill. If he says he's the guy. at this stage of the game that's good enough for me.

You showed me the light. I get it now. Titans and Vikes last year, us this year. Much rather have this plan than Smith and Flynn. Yes please....

I don't care if folks love/hate/or are nuetral about Tannehill.

Just do your research on him, and come to your own conclusion. Actually i'd be interested, truly, to hear from folks who think he's our best bet because of reasons X, Y, or Z.

I listened to the "experts" and did not see what they told me I should see. So if anyone has a good argument in his favor, i'd love to read it. maybe I really am missing the boat.

Everybody else missed the boat on Couch too, and he was rated higher. But seems the same to me.

Arguments for Tannehill? Love to read em, please. Seriously.
Especially since it seems reasonable to assume Fins might draft him, I'm itching to change my perception.

Jeff Row,

What the hell is wrong with you man? First Garrard is a smoke screen. No you say you clicked on the link I provided and say you see Tannehill improved evry year he started.

Look again dufuss, look like he only had 1 full starting season. What, he improved from playing a few mop up games in 2010 over 2011? Dude this my last post to you. Obviously with you its Romper Room kiddie hour!

Should we go rent Bozo the Clown for your birthday party too? Or will it be Cucky Cheese's? LOL

Armando twited that only 21 people in the Fire jeff ireland rally ..LOL .. seems like not that many people hate him after all ..probably its those 21 people posting under different names on this blog which makes it look like more .. GO GET A LIFE YOU 21 PEOPLE! LOL

I have always known that Home is FOS, and of other nasty things.

I would sign Tebow when he's cut and use him on offense but not as a QB.(maybe out the backfield !!)
Trade down from 8th for extra 1st or early second and draft in first five picks DE, WR, WR, QB, TE/DB.
The FO need to do some fan pr and at least give us something as to what their intentions are.
If Philben was being over-ruled is it possible that he may even stick two fingers up at Ross and walk away.
Signing a decent QB now would have taken the pressure off using a high pick in the draft.
Restructure some more contracts and sign a DE/TE/safety which would alter my drafting.
The new DEs would start with Wake playing LB - is this mad or will it give a real boost to the pass rush and also help the secondary.
The WRs need to have good hands and able to get separation quickly.
Right side of OL could be already fixed with Jerry/Murtha/Hicks but depth is a problem now.
IMO things aren't catastrophic and can be fixed to some extent via the draft - a la Philben way !!
The one thing I would not do is trade up in the first especially for a QB or for Blackmon ( best pass defense he faced was 49th and five were 100th or worse)

Armando twited that only 21 people in the Fire jeff ireland rally ..LOL .. seems like not that many people hate him after all ..probably its those 21 people posting under different names on this blog which makes it look like more .. GO GET A LIFE YOU 21 PEOPLE! LOL

Why would anyone waste their time there? Jeff Ireland isn't worth the hershey skids in your panties!

@Yesterday's Gone
Bozo the clown sounds nice ..maybe you can be the one that comes as BOZO THE CLOWN ...LOL

I think you are reaching here...

This guy has done little that shows a clear vision of how to inact positive change or land a prime target...

He undervalues everyone or does everyone overvalue certain players and coaches? Which is it?
Bottom line is he can't close a deal with a gamechanger.

This guy never had this job before...
Parcells thought he was ready...
Parcells was wrong. He wasn't ready...
Maybe he will be better someday...
I doubt it. He is too heavy handed for the NFL.

Learned from folks who are mostly considered outdated at this stage of the NFL.

Wrong guy at the Wrong time
And the Fins continue to suffer the Marino Curse for forching him into retirement 12 yrs ago.

craig m

i agree. i trust philbin & sherman to take either tannehill, cousins,or osweiler and turnout a player in 1-2 years. remember a 2nd rounder named favre was a pick that caused mike holmgrem some sleepless nights till the light came on.these guys are part of the GB bloodline.they can coach.unlike the cavemen we've had for the last 17 years.

Good post Mando, although I'm still upset about BM trade. The guy is emotional and makes bad descisions sometimes, but he's no TO. I like the way he called out Vontae last year when he was slacking. Vontae took umbrage but responded. BM is a team player and I like that, IMO.

Also, VERY relieved your not the GM making the call on the RGIII decision.

..I'm going to play GM for a second...I am going to get us a Wide Reciever in the First round. and it isn't Blackmon, it isn't Floyd. He is the best reciever available in the first round....Mike Wallace.

This team needs playmakers..I think quarterback is set this year..(Sorry first round qb guys).. IF I could play GM. I would trade back into the back part of the first round, gain some picks along the way...At 8 we could easily gain another second, another third.. with the first round pick I would sign Mike Wallace. And Use our late first round pick for compensation with The Steelers..

Essentially we would be getting the best Wide Reciever in this free-agency-Draft period for a late first round pick.. Not a bad deal.

Of course we would have to find a partner..But this is just playing GM...It won't happen. So in my scenario we have a trade partner..I guess the only hangup is that it has been reported Philbin is against high profile recievers..I think he is against distractions..Not great players...

When a qb has the "oh so glorious powerful arm" they almost always tend to get overated on just that aspect alone.

Dont see why Sherman would be doing cartwheels to take him at #8. Hell, Tannehill was the one that got him fired at Texas A&M. Seems many here dont have ability to connect dots. LOL

7-9, 7-9, and and 6-10. Nuff said.

Why would anyone waste their time there? Jeff Ireland isn't worth the hershey skids in your panties!

well you 21 people seem to be wasting your time here in this blog ... so it seems like if there was more they would show up ... seems that there is only 21 people that want him gone ... and yall 21 people with different names post all the time , trying to make it look like more ....LOL

Jeff Row,

I'll be more than happy to come to your little kiddie=kiddie birthday party dressed as Bozo the Clown. But it may take a Peyton Manning like contract to get me signed up.

Looks like Chucky Cheese's again for your birthday party this year, doesnt it! LOL

you really think the big EGO let jeff make the final call in 08,09,10? since the big runa dissappeared the guy has done ok. he got us a 21st century HC with packer bloodlines. he, and ross just need to SHUT THE F@CK UP and let philbin do all the talking.

JS_in_LA - In RE to Tannehill, what a lot of scouts are looking at are his intangibles and potential. Because he's 22 and only has 20 starts....they look at that and say, "his stats aren't through the roof....but they're pretty damned good for a kid with 20 college starts at the position." Because of this, many scouts look to him as being a very high ceiling kinda guy, but one where you do not know exactly what you're getting yet....too much inexperience.

Conversely, they look at a number of other 2nd rounders + (i.e. Weeden, Cousins, Foles, etc)...and they have a greater body of work to look at, thussly, this leads to speculation that they may have hit their ceilings or have come close....not as much upside potential, etc.

It's all about potential. Like I said....you're as close to sure fire guys as you can get (Luck, RG3) are gone....Tannehill is the 3rd ranked QB on every board I've ever looked at.

Darryl Dunphy

good plan. i still think cousins, osweiler, and maybe tannehill is there in round 2. get the best 2 WC offense style wr's you can, the qb, a versitile tackle guard type, and all the jason taylor closes you can find to make tom brady wet his wifes pants.

Give it rest, Tebow isnt coming here:

1. Ross wouldnt trade up with the Rams because he lost Fisher to them

2. Wanted to nabbed Alex Smith to get even with Harbaugh for not coming here.

3. Right now he's pissed at Elway because Manning chose them over us.

Are you connecting the dots yet? LOL

Sherman already gave Tannehill a ringing public endorsement. So the question is...
Is it a coach helping his boy get a job?
Or is it a coach who really loves his guy?

I suppose that's where the assumptions are coming from. I really don't knwo which it is.

well you 21 people seem to be wasting your time here in this blog ... so it seems like if there was more they would show up ... seems that there is only 21 people that want him gone ... and yall 21 people with different names post all the time , trying to make it look like more ....LOL

How can I put this politely? You're an idiot!

Maybe, in the real world, people have jobs that are more important to be at than attending some kind of hastily put together rally?

Grow up dude, you sound like an idiotic baboon. If you don't think 85-95% of the fan base doesn't want Ireland fired right now, you should go to your local mental health clinic and ask for a check up.

If not, your the dumbest, most gullabel person in the free world.

@Yesterday's Gone
you cant argue againist my point so it makes you look childish ... your the one that brings up Bozo the clown and Chucky cheese so it seems your the one that knows all about it .. so enjoy your time at them places picking on the little kids cause thats all that you seem to know how to do is act like one ..LOL

The BIG show against Ireland and 30 people showed up. Thats hilarious.

Isnt that the same reason the Jets traded up for Sanchez. He had only one college season as a starter too. Seems every year Sanchez's getting a little worse not better.

Im sure the "bust" word is now being whispered about in the Jet organization.

Here is my take for what its worth. When ever a new guy shows up at work they must do one thing and one thing only. Prove themselves!

No only prove themselves as a worker but prove themselves as a co-worker.

Jeff has not proven himself as a worker of high caliber. He gets most things wrong but some things right. He is not a good co-worker either. People don't want to work for him or with him.

Personally, the Garrard signing is the only signing I can think about that made the team BETTER. All the other moves made us worse or stayed even.

Did Reggie make the team better? We got worse across the board in the last 4 years.

Jeff, what's it like to live in your parents basement, free loading through life?

I don't like Jeff because Jeff harbors deep seated issues which affect his football decision making abilities.

Jeff Iewscum is a JACKASS!

yeah Albert it seems that only 25 or 30 people really only want him gone ...they just post under different names to make it look like more ..LOL

It would be nice for you to make sense every now and then.

Maybe the endorsement Sherman gave Tannehill was an audition to show Ireland he belongs in the Dolphin organization.

In Miami, an endorsement of a player is the "DEATH" sentence. We all know that by now ,dont we! LOL

I feel another 1-15 season coming up.

JS in LA...yesterday you asked me who I perfer in NEXT years draft class..I think you named Barkley, Jones, Geno Smith...as the top rated guys coming out now.

Things will change from now until draft day next year. I'm sure there will be a player whos stock rises that is the hot commodity. A player nobody is talking about now.. Obviously. Barkley is the prize of the draft next year..This years Andrew Luck. Landry Jones going back to school was IMO the best thing he could have done..Who is to say he won't improve on his dificiencies from last year, and be a very attractive option. Geno Smith...I can't comment on. I know he has a strong arm, is mobile and big..He is most likely the guy that has the chance to skyrocket into the fold..

This all came about as I had said trade out of the first round. Aquire Ammo for a real Blue Chip prospect..There is 3 right there. Really if we can be in the running for the top 2 propects..It is worth passing on all of the guys available to us this year.

Jeff Row, how old are you? Your posts make it seem like your in your early teens I'm guessing?

Albert, if I wanted to talk to an as*hole, I'd fart.
Pipe down!

you really are dumb ..LOL i live at sea level .. there isn't any basements in Miami ... LOL it sounds like your the one living in your moms basement up in Ny .. your a secret jet fan acting like a dolphin fan ..and a childish one at that ..LOL

Although Matt Flynn "thinks a lot of" Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, he explained that he chose Seattle because it was a better situation.
"I felt it's a program that's really on the rise," said Flynn, "doing the right thing, is being led by the right type of people." Flynn didn't come right out and say the Dolphins are not run by the right type of people, but it's yet another sign that a culture change is needed in Miami. GM Jeff Ireland, in particular, appears to have little respect league-wide.

Jeff Row,

I agree. By the way, how old do you think "LOL is? I am guessing 10 to 13. He tries to hurt your feelings by calling people names. Childish no doubt.

Isnt that the same reason the Jets traded up for Sanchez. He had only one college season as a starter too. Seems every year Sanchez's getting a little worse not better.
Im sure the "bust" word is now being whispered about in the Jet organization.

Yeah.....but there's rarely a "sure fire" QB....everyone takes their chances. Like I said before, it's not as risky a proposition as it was under the old CBA....and I'm not talking about trading up for Tannehill...I'm talking about Tannehill being their at 8 or possibly trading back and the Phins taking Tannehill later in the 1st.

Also...like I said, it's about being realistic...not about what I would or wouldn't do if I was the GM. I believe the Phins have their eyes on Tannehill, which is a realistic assumption given that every board I've ever looked at has him pegged as the 3rd best QB prospect in the draft.

I heard about 100 people showed up to protest Ireland. Heck, thats more then go to a Dullfin game lately!! LOL

I couldn't agree with you more Armando

Please Dolphins come to San Diego here are welcome

No prob.
If you dig next year's prospects, then so be it.
Personally I don't see anything after Barkley worth the fuss.
At least you thought about it. Most folks assume there will magically be some awesome dudes sitting there to draft. I'm just showing the likely candidates.

Mando, do the blog a favor & put up a poll.

Do you want Ireland fired, yes or no. Results are indisuptable.

Then we'll know if the likes of Prince Albert & Dumbo Row are as naive & ignorant as they appear.

...YG.Let Home make his predictions..They haven't been close to correct for 3 years..No reason to start thinking they will be right now...Home saying Tebow will be a Phin is a guarantee it will not happen...Keep up the good work Home!

No he's not the devil.

Unfortunately, he's not very good at his job:

1)Only 1 drafted Pro Bowl player and he was the first overall pick. Four years, 28 draft picks few Pro Bowlers drafted.
2)Too many players drafted who didn't work out here/were cut quickly.
3)The cutting of Special Teamers culminating in the NE game.
4)No offensive production leading to the Wildcat.
5)Classless moves (Dez Bryant question, cutting Y. Bell late).

No clear articulated plan to the fans/customers. Too many moves not made because of $$ as if tickets will cost less or the DirecTV package will be cheaper.

Basement? The Dolphins are cemented in the BASEMENT!!

exactly LOL must be like 13 or so ..i dont really care ..but he thinks by saying that stuff , he hurts my feeling ..LOL ..i dont really care what he thinks , and shows just how childish he really is.

Thanks for proving my point, By the way your mom called and your bottle is ready. (She is tired of breat feeding you)
