Dolphins fan protest not as effective as possible

I love and admire Dolphins fans.

You are the reason I am employed. You feed my family and put a roof over my head. You are passionate. You are usually well-informed. Many of you are bright. And you're beaten down after a decade of unacceptable results by your once-elite football franchise.

But Tuesday's protest across the street from the Dolphins practice facility in Davie, Fl.?

Not the way to do it.

Firstly, it was hastily planned. It was modestly attended. It was not exactly exactly Martin Luther King's march on Selma, Alabama as you can see by the video I shot below.

The Dolphins recognized the gathering. The club released the following statement through a spokesman:

"We have the most passionate fans in football and they are not shy about letting their sentiments be known. We understand and we are working hard on giving them something to cheer about this season."

And here is the video:

But here is my point:

That is not the way to do it.

A gathering of two dozen Dolphins fans in the middle of the afternoon in the offseason doesn't really touch the team. It doesn't make the team feel your pain. It doesn't move the meter to force change as much as other things do.

What things?

Do. NOT. Buy. Tickets.

Do. NOT. Purchase. Jerseys.

If you are disgruntled with Miami Dolphins LLC, you have to send a message to this business by approaching it in a business manner.

And if you do have to attend the games and purchase $10 beers and $18 sandwiches in the concession stand, then do it on a day when Stephen Ross is likely to be on the field. Arrive early to Miami's home games when Ross is roaming the sideline. And then boo him lustily or chant or otherwise voice displeasure so you get his attention.

In other words, deliver the message to the person with the power to change things. And let him know you are upset in an up-close-and-personal manner.

Golden State Warriors fans took that approach this week. And it is all over the national news. And it embarrassed Warriors owner Joe Lacob. And chances are really good he now understands how toxic he has made things with Golden State fans.

There were 18,000 people gathered at the Warriors' game and they rained down holy heck on Lacob. That is much, much, much more effective than 24 souls holding up signs across from the training facility ... while Ross is home in New York.

As nobody else knows what he's doing, either Ireland is a genius, or an idiot-savant.

Crusher don't bother trying to convince some in here of the truth. Our society has such bad attention deficit disorder that as soon as the Tuna left the building they forgot he worked here and was training Ireland.

I was debating this with another poster. He said in business the ceo lets the underlings do the work so Parcells was just sitting back while Ireland made all of the calls. And he called me stupid because I believed otherwise.

I reminded him that Parcells wasn't a CEO as much as a project coordinator. He was in charge of the project of rebuilding the Dolphins. He brought inexperienced employees in that would need training. He was NOT going to let someone who has never run a draft make decisions that would directly effect his place in the NFL. He has admitted to personally scouting White and also drafting him as well as other players.

But you can't argue logic in here. Don't waste your time on this one, when Parcells left he was given a total pass for screwing our team and stealing money.

"I think Ireland believes we are set at many positions. At TE, Fasano, Mastrud and Clay. At DE/LB, Odrick, Wake, Westerman. At QB, Moore, Garrard, Devlin/Rookie. At RB's, Reggie, Thomas and Messum. At CB, Vontae, Smith, Marshall. Still, we are short on receivers, safeties and G/OT."

We're not set at DE/OLB. Westerman is a backup & not a starter. Outside of Wake we still need another pass rusher. Misi is just not the answer. Assuming we have Burnett play MLB & if we move Dansby to the Strong side we still need to draft a Weak side LB.

Are these the same guys who last year were chanting Orton! Orton! Orton?

They shure soud the same!

Okay Mando, so we are on the same page...It is Stephen Ross more than anyone...Lot of guts for you to post this blog!...It is the sad truth though.

I live in Nevada and usually travel with my kids to a game once a year, but this season I will not waste my money, I will not buy them any Dolphin stuff (unless it is a bootleg), since my kids are only 11 and 7 years old I may even steer them to support a different team so they do not have to feel the same pain I am going through as a fan.

Quit telling me to not support the Dolphins. I do what I want. I am about worn out on reading "well I have been a fan sine 1972 and now blah blah blah. STFU. I will watch the games and I will buy the merchandise all I damn well please. I love how so many grown assed people think it is okay to throw temper tanrums like 5 year olds because they didn't get what they wanted. Way to set an example for your idiot kids, idiots.

The other point these protesting morons dont understand..... piss the guy off enough and he will move the team to LA. Morons.

For the love of all that is holy, SHUT UP! | March 21, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Agreed, that guy is so full of himself its nauseating.

This team is jinxed! As long as Ireland & Ross are here, this once proud team is going down the stink hole!

Agree!! If you embarrass the owner at the games while he's going by, or when you see him out in the streets, or when they show him on the jumbo tron is the best way to get his attention. Not doing it in the off season. You let the Owner know your frustration, not the GM, or to Mike Dee, but the owner and you may get his attention on Firing Ireland IF we have a loosing record by week 6.

If we did bring in Tebow, the Fans would be calling for his head and Philbin's head in two years. Yes he'll generate hope, excitement; but can he win games under Philbin's system, not one designed for Tebow?? The fans will cheer when we get him and then ask for his head on a platter when he fails.

I've been a fan since 1980, when the QB's were David Woodley and Don Strock and the only SuperBowls I've seen them play is their losses to Theisman and the Redskins and Montana's 49er's. Disappointed that we didn't land any of the QB's we targeted, but that's the way it goes. If I were in Ireland's shoes, I would have at least pulled the trigger on something, but they are talking to the coaches on which players will be fitting the system Philbin will be implementing, so for now I'll be in wait and see until week 6 to see if their decision during this time were the right ones for the team. We have an easy schedule in 2012-13 and should at least contend for a wild-card spot, IF NOT then would be the time to embarrass the owner at the home games and as he arrives at the stadium.

I'm not a fan of the front office but a fan of the Dolphins Logo and the Team. I'm sure the coaches and Ross have their daily meetings on how they will transform this team in 2012-13, so as fans we have to wait and see. The interesting thing about this whole thing to me, is that Matt Moore and David Gerrard are only under contract this season, next season they'll be free agents. Looks like we'll be looking for a franchise QB next year too!?!

WIN, LOOSE, OR TIE... DOLPHINS TILL' I DIE!!!

B33,

We don't need an ILB, we need an OLB. We have Burnett as our starter, Misi is supposed to move inside, & we just re-signed Spitler. I thought Ingram would make sense as DE/OLB hybrid but he doesn't satisfy Ireland's height requirements.

We Have Draft Picks at some point you have to start relying on your younger guys to step up. We have 4 safety candidates on this team three of which aren't even three years into the league yet. Good teams utilize their draft picks. If we're going to be a good team we have to start relying more heavily on the guys we draft. Sparano let them sit on the sideline and rot or he would allow the to play ST. You have to get them in the game, they need to play. Bell was a solid leader and good run stuffer but he was getting slow and could not cover tight ends. He also never made big plays. We have to do better than Bell at SS.

dolfanSF

the guy couldn't catch a cold last year when it mattered, though he was a MVP at the pro bowl...yawn...crickets...yawn

i often wondered why we never threw a fade route when we had a 6' 4" wideout on 1 side and a 6'2" wideout on the other. probalbly the same reason we couldn't figure out how to run a screen to reggie bush at least 3 times a game...bad coach

So our new OC Sherman and QB Tannehill

u all want sooo badly

Played together at Texas A&M

Fact is:
Sherman and Tannehill COULD NOT EVEN GET IT DONE IN COLLEGE

THEY SUCKED!

They blew several double digit leads in the fourth quarter and LOST all those games!

Sherman was FIRED

Tannehill SUCKS!

So now u want them to beat the Patriots! LMAO!

Hey didn't Tim Tebow Beat the crap out of the Dolphins, Jets and Steelers (and many others) with only one good WR and get it done in the fourth quarter?!

Hey isn't Tim Tebow available for a STEAL!

like 2 million dollars!

Oh yeah u want the "west coast offense" (LOL) w losing college chumps Sherman and Tannenhill

Freakin Pathetic!

Go Tebow !

Go Jags !

It wasn't me, it was Ireland, Draft Picks.

I think nobody wants a 34 y/o safety in Y. Bell, so we might re-sign him at a reduced cost. And it is good.

Speaking of rotting on the sideline. Anyone remember seeing Wallace or Moore at any point last year? They never got a real look and they were in their second season. Both are faster than Hartline yet Tony left them sitting on the sideline. I'm aware Wallace was injured half way in but the funny thing is I think he was injured playing on special teams! What about Gates? He was in for a handful of plays because of Tony's insistence that all of the receivers be perfect route runners. I understand the need for running precise routes but wouldn't some more game time speed up the process of learning that? Tony never looked past next weeks game, absolutely no vision.

Phins78

ireland did create his own pr nightmare.he must be tired of his own foot. the big ruiner knew one thing.closed lips sink ships. he spoke less than a mime while he was here.now he is just another head on espn. ieland should shut up and let philbin become the face of the franchise.i get a tony dungy like vibe from the guy and that,to me, is a plus.

Are these the same guys who last year were chanting Orton! Orton! Orton?

THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY THE SAME ONES!!!

You know what's fun? Seeing someone writes a big long post to you (because they are stalking you) and then scrolling right on over the top and not reading more than the first few words. Hope the moron keeps wasting his time. Fantastic stuff.

if we had had a QB that could finish off drives and get us TD instead of FG then we wouldn't be where we're at right now. some people would still have their jobs.

I didn't really like any of the QB options during FA so no big deal to me. Just don't know why we traded our only offensive threat. cap space i suppose.

Posted by: dolfanSF | March 21, 2012 at 11:38 AM

Tim Tebow gets TDs in the fourth quarter and doesn't need the "west cost offense and loser fired coach Sherman. lol

Phins78

feel the same way about wallace and moore.both ended up on ir i think but not for the whole season.same with jerry, misi, merling, wilson, gates.that is what separates us literally and figuratively from the pack-pats-saints-giants.they use everyone. you simply can't afford to let guys sit and watch in todays NFL. tony never got that.

What amazes me are the posters that want to act as if Ireland is new on the job; let's give him some time to see what he can do. As if he was some sort of passive observer while serving as GM under Parcells. Ireland has had more than enough time and has failed miserably. Look at the record; Ireland is what the record says he is.

Sad that Sparano and the New York Jets are going to kick the crap out of the Dolphins and SWEEP the Dolphins in 2012

So much for the "west coast offense"

lol

Go Tebow!

Go Jags!

Patriots are going to sign safety Y-Bell!

If Tebow goes to the Jets he will run over the Dolphins like he did a few months ago setting an NFL record in the AFC scoring 15 points in under 3 minutes

Thought the Dolphins had the 6th ranked defense

Tebow surely made them look like SHHIIEEET!!!

Mando,

I disagree with your article that fans should boo Ross in public. Ross wants a SB elite football team more than anyone. You forget that he inherited the stink of the trifecta when he purchased this team. Two parts of that organization are gone and I have little doubt that if this turns into another disaster of a year that Ireland will be gone at the end of the season, (even if it is just for appearance sake that they are moving in a different direction).

We have a totally new offensive scheme (WCO) with a new head coach and his assistants. People complain that the BM trade was a bad move, I disagree, it was the right thing to do. The WCO offense demands that the ball be spread around to multiple players, BM's ego would not let that happen and he would have become a cancer to the teams new direction at some point.

We have a very serviceable qb in Matt Moore and a great backup in Garrard. We plugged a few holes in FA and still have the draft to complete. Great teams are built in the draft, not in free agency. People should just chill out and let this new team go through the natural progressions.

Joe Robbie's Corpse

Phins78,

I don't think you heard me complain about cutting Bell since he's clearly been on the decline for the past two seasons & has been a liability in the passing game.

With that said, I don't like the way it was handled since Ireland had just said recently that he was NOT going to do that. But for arguments sake, this is a business & things change. I get it. Fine. It's great to make more cap space but only if we use it to sign someone else at a position of need. There's no way Ireland can convince me that Eric Winston (who is a top rated RT) who just signed a 4 year/$22 Million to play for the Chiefs was too expensive. In fact of all the players we looked at including Manning, Flynn, & Alex Smith this was the ONE player who was established & was somewhat affordable at a position of INCREDIBLE need.

wonder how fired loser Sherman and w double digit lead in 3 fourth quarter games Sherman and Tannehill LOSE em all!

Yea, they will def do great on the Miami Mullets!

lol

Go Tebow!

Go Gators!

Go Jags!

Football fans sure are trite, superficial and grossly inarticulate. What babble. No surprise I guess.

We have draft picks,

With Misi moving inside, that tells me 2 things:

1. Misi was a college DE(out of position here), becomes another 2nd round flop. And either

2A. They move Dansby outside, which he played allot in Arizona or

2B. Clears the way to cut him

Misi didn't work out as they planned for & Dansby has not been playing his natural spot either & he's not worth the contract.

So if you look at this franchises MEGA moves:
Dansby, Marshall & Bush. Which worked out?

An objective person would say the only 1 really worth a pile of beans is Bush & he barely cracked 1000 yards. In a league of 1400-1500 yard backs, hard to get rally jacked about him either but, I'll give him his due.

go fins

Yeah Crush, Pats,Packers,Steelers. They all throw their rookies out there and let them make a name for themselves. That's got me excited about what Philbin might bring. If he brings that Pack mentality we will be able to assess our rookies quicker and make decisions on whether to keep them or not instead of watching them on the bench for three years while wasting roster spots.

Wonder if Ireland will fire Reggie Bush next or Simply The Bess?

Bess would be a great fit on the Patriots next to Welker

maybe Ireland can help the other teams out some more

I think they need to try again, only with a few thousand Dolphins fans next time. This small protest made NFL.com so imagine what it could do if more of us showed up. It's time to get rid of Ireland and to send a message to Mr Ross.

Casserley shows the Dolphins trading down one pick with Carolina. Why would either team do that unless Carolina thought Miami would take the player they want (Poe in his mock). Dolphins the take Tannehil. The trade doesn't make sense to me.

If the Bills get another player or two then

All AFC EAST teams should sweep the Miami Mullets this year

Go Tebow!

Sherms defense sucked in college. The blown 4th quarter leads were on them, not Tannehill. Sherm runs the offense so no worries there. And IF they sign Tannehill he is a two to three year project. They wouldn't expect him to start right away. That's why we have vets at the qb position.

"feel the same way about wallace and moore.both ended up on ir i think but not for the whole season.same with jerry, misi, merling, wilson, gates.that is what separates us literally and figuratively from the pack-pats-saints-giants.they use everyone. you simply can't afford to let guys sit and watch in todays NFL. tony never got that."

He did that with Lex Hilliard too who I would have liked to see more from. Signing Larry Johnson last year??? Someone will need to explain that one to me.

Another move was putting Murtha on IR after he hurt his toe in preseason. I can't understand how a toe injury especially for an O-lineman who are the toughest players in the NFL (along with the D-linemen) would miss an entire season. The kid was playing well & IMO would have been an upgrade over Columbo when he returned.

"Don't buy the tickets. Don't buy the jerseys". Mando, as DC said, that's been happening for a while. Lot of orange seats last year and probably just as many this year. I'm sure Ross would actually like to sell instead of buy those seats.

I think viewing yesterdays protest as a failure is a little myoptic. Why? Remember the FIRE IRELAND BANNER and Ross getting booed? Now you have sportscasters and players speaking out + the protest. There is another flyover planned this year. Will there be a bigger, better planned protest? I'd be willing to bet on it.

Viewed together, it's no so dumb, is it?

We Have Draft Picks

agree.winston is a beast,he might have convinced some future cane FA's to give us a look to. that was a definite ireland F@CK up there;but no one bats 1000. hopefully jerry(rg/rt),murtha(rt),or garner(rg/rt)gets it done. maybe they draft 1 or 2 versitile tackle/guard types and get them on the feild instead of letting young guys rot on the pine like the last regime.

Season ticket holders should spend 5 or 6 thousand dollars each to feel miserable and watch one of the worst teams in the NFL because in 3 or 4 years they might be a good team

of course in 3 or 4 years we will start rebuilding all over again and lose for another 3-4 years and so on

ThanX Ireland for firing all our best players and signing nobody but a washed up 2nd string QB that just had spinal surgery

Who do we make the big check out to for 1/2 dozen season tickets to laughing stock team in the NFL?

Captain Obvious,

I have to disagree with you. Dansby is a great player & probably the best cover LB in the NFL. IMO--He's extremely underrated & is BY FAR our most consistent player we have on defense.

As for Bush, let's see what happens. He had a good season (the best of his career) but he signed a two-year contract. Let's see if he can stay healthy again. If he can then I'd say it was a good signing.

Regarding Garrard,

Here is something from Adam Schein yesterday -

"Instead, as first reported by our Jay Glazer, the Dolphins sign David Garrard. I like Garrard. But he told me on the SiriusXM Blitz two weeks ago that he’s not 100 percent healthy yet and he didn’t play last year."

Ireland deserves NO playas

Ireland is all about himself

When was the last time Ireland helped out a young black kid?

Wrong home sweet home. Wake and Coples or Ingram are going to sens Sanchez to the emergency room and Bush is going to run for 57 yards BUT he will grab a td on a 5 yard slant that he will turn into a 60 yard td catch. Moore will throw strikes to Fasano and Bess and the Phins win 24-19. The Jets will kick four field goals and get a td from Sanchez before he busts his leg. Sparano will fist pump every field goal to the delight of thousand of Phins fans!

That's the way it's going down,,,,,both times!

"agree.winston is a beast,he might have convinced some future cane FA's to give us a look to. that was a definite ireland F@CK up there;but no one bats 1000. hopefully jerry(rg/rt),murtha(rt),or garner(rg/rt)gets it done. maybe they draft 1 or 2 versitile tackle/guard types and get them on the feild instead of letting young guys rot on the pine like the last regime."

Jerry's play was a surprise later in the season BUT don't forget that he came into camp out of shape after the lockout. That's unacceptable IMO.

MY PROBLEM WITH IRELAND THIS YEAR WAS NOT THEY HE CHOOSE GARRARD OVER SMITH AND FLYNN HE WAS PROBABLY RIGHT ABOUT THAT ONLY TIME WILL TELL AND WE HAVE TO PICK UP A FRANCHISE QB WHEN THEY ARE AVAILABLE AND SMITH AND FLYNN ARE QUESTION MARKS IN THAT AREA.I NEVER THOUGHT MANNING WAS COMING TO THE DOLPHINS ANYWAYS, BUT GETTING RID OF MARSHALL BEFORE WE HAD SOMEONE TO REPLACE HIM WAS NOT VERY SMART, I KNOW MARSHALL HAS HAD PROBLEMS BUT HOW TO WE REPLACE WHAT HE COULD DO ON THE FIELD? AND AFTER THAT LETTING BELL GO WHO LED THE TEAM IN TACKLES WAS NOT SMART EITHER , HOW ABOUT LETTING GO SEAN SMITH, NOLAN CARROLL, BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT VERY GOOD AT ALL ESPECIALLY CARROLL, THIS TEAM AS IT STANDS NOW WOULD HAVE A HARD TRYING TO COMPETE WITHOUT A NUMBER ONE RECEIVER, OTHER TEAMS WILL LOCK DOWN BESS AND HARTLINE FOR SURE, SAME WITH BUSH, JEFF SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT THIS THROUGH MORE AND THEN WITH NO BELL WE ARE IN TROUBLE, WHO IS GOING TO MAKE ALL THOSE TACKLES, THE OTHER SAFETY SUCKED, VONTAE IS THE ONLY OTHER DB WORTH A DAM, MAKE NO MISTAKE WE ARE IN TROUBLE AFTER THOSE TWO MOVES, NOT GOOD JEFF WHAT WERE YOU THINKING WE WOULD BE LUCKY TO WIM SIX GAMES NEXT YEAR WITHOUT SOME DRASTIC CHANGES AND IRELAND IS TO BUSY COUNTING PENNIES, WE WILL SUCK AGAIN

There's a FB page called "Mr. Ross please fire Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland". Right now it only has 406 fans. Let's see how many join today. Consider it an online petition and a place to commiserate.

We have no #1 WR and the others barely qualify for a #2 WR

So everyone will suffer cuz of Ireland firing Brandon Marshall and getting a warm bowl of soup in return

Reggie Bush and the running game will also suck this year because of no passing threat, the will jam lil Reggie and knock him backwards for a loss again and again

Dolphins suck

PERIOD

Good point we have WHDP. Maybe Winston didn't fit into the size and athletic mold Philbin wants? I know he said he wants to get more athletic. Why did the Texans cut him? Was he just a cap casualty? But then why him if he's so good when there are 53 other guys to choose from?

But then why even bring Winston in for a visit right? The Dolphins did visit with him I believe so that confuses me as well.

tebow suck

Scott,

I can't fault the Dolphins for trading Marshall away but I'm with you 100% that we NEEDED to have a backup plan like the Chargers had when Vincent Jackson left they signed Robert Meachum or when Carl Nicks left the Saints they went out & signed Ben Grubbs.

IMO--I don't think we will draft Tannehill if he is available @ 8. I believe Ireland will try to trade down & pick up another pick BUT if we do pick @ 8 I believe he will take Coples based on value & he fits Ireland's size requirements unlike Ingram who I prefer.

Jets & Bills secondary is 110% better than the smelly stank fish

Who do u have Fraud Poser Boy cannot catch, cover or tackle, only Shuck & Jive & talk Shiieett sean smith

lol

Dolphins Suck
PERIOD

Home Sweet Home, doesn't the Jets site have anything going on? Why are you trolling us? Go talk about your own team. You're a fan but you're fantasizing about the Jets sweeping the Dolphins.

ROFL NO MIAMI FAN WOULD EVER ROOT FOR THAT NO MATTER WHAT WAS GOING ON! Dolphins fans don't root for a Jets sweep! Hahahahahaha get outta here ya puke! :)

We have nothing for offensive weapons

not one #1 playa

Bush got a lil lucky last year after failing to run up the middle 63 times in a row

Dolphins Suck
PERIOD

Jets are a much better team than Miami

Look at the record the last 3 years

and now Ireland gave away your best playa on defense and offense

Dolphins Suck
Period

Go Tebow!

Yeah. I don't get the Winston cut. It was a cap casualty & a very big surprise. Winston had some minor surgery recently but certainly nothing to be overly concerned about. I believe the Texans just made another weird move trading Demeco Ryans to the Eagles for a 4th round pick.

Whatever....I'd just like to see us sign quality players. If it's not Winston so be it.

Dolphins QB Henne & Moore went 0-7

Tim Tebow was a WINNER and laid a smack down on the Dolphins!

Go Tebow!
