What's most important to Manning? Relationship

It has been argued that because Peyton Manning is so thorough in his approach to football, he is going to approach his search for a new team the same way. He's going to analyze a team's talent, salary cap, offensive line, relative strength within its division, all that before deciding where he'll land.

And that is probably correct. But none of those are the most important aspect of his search for a landing spot where he'll continue his career.

So what is that No. 1 variable that he's judging in the teams he's considering?

Relationship.

The Dolphins, who spent five hours with Manning Monday afternoon and evening, came away from their visit believing Manning is looking for a comfort zone, a group of people he can be at peace with and find a bond with. The club representatives that met with Manning during their meeting in Indianapolis did the best they could to make Manning feel like he'd be at home with the club.

They do not know if they succeeded. Nobody but Manning really knows, regardless of how plugged in any pundit (including me) tries to convince you they are on the matter.

Peyton Manning will probably decide which team he'll go to based on his comfort level with the people he expects he'll be working with, including coaches, general managers, assistants and perhaps teammates.

That is why Manning probably took his trips to Denver and Arizona first. That is where he feels the greatest sense of relationship going into the process. He is friends and respect Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt based on a bond forged years ago at the Pro Bowl.

He feels a kinship to Denver's John Elway based on their mutual experiences. He also knows coach John Fox.

Today he was reportedly meeting with the Tennesee Titans. He's quite familiar with the state, having played for the University of Tennessee Volunteers once upon a time. He's heard stories about coach Mike Munchak from father Archie Manning because they were teammates once.

And this: The Titans Monday confirmed the hiring of Dennis Polian, the son of former Colts General Manager Bill Polian, to serve as a personal assistant to Munchak. Polian is very familiar with Manning and vice versa and it is possible he will be present in the meeting between Manning and Munchak.

Relationship.

So what did the Dolphins offer in this regard? I do not know. The Dolphins aren't saying. It's a state secret. But my guess is it probably couldn't have been very compelling.

The truth is Miami's coaching staff doesn't have any strong bonds to Manning. Yes, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman reportedly recruited Manning to Texas A&M in the 1990s. But that seems to be it.

Unless the Dolphins got Dan Marino (a Manning friend) or Bill Parcells (a Manning confidant) or yesterday hired Cooper (the QB'solder brother) or Tom Moore (Manning's offensive coordinator in Indy) to come along on the trip, the ties the bind Manning to the Dolphins seem flimsy.

No, the Dolphins Monday were actually trying to build a relationship rather than rekindle one. On his other meetings Manning seems to be rekindling with people in Arizona, Denver and perhaps even Tennessee.

Does this mean the Dolphins have no shot at Manning? Not necessarily. Obviously Manning took this meeting because on some level he thinks it might work in Miami. Former teammate Reggie Wayne has been in Manning's ear about joining the Dolphins and making things work there. Wayne is a former University of Miami standout.

Manning also likes South Florida. He lives here part of the year and his wife is said to love it here.

But can the Dolphins consider themselves leaders with Manning on the relationship front? Even one member of the organization admits that isn't so.

In that regard, Denver is probably the leader, followed by Arizona, then Tennessee, then the Dolphins. So yes, the Dolphins have a lot of ground to make up on this all important issue. Does it kill their cause and chances?

No. But it definitely isn't helping.

Great News! Let's get on with the future and skip the band aid.

they should move on to plan B ASAP. This will save the organization face. It's like moving on from a chick you'll never bang.

Marino would not come to bat for this org... We should have swapped 1sts and traded 2 1st rounders and 2 number 2's for RG3 the extra two to make up for the 8th pick being lower. So 2 1sts for rgIII

I live in CT also

Marino has been disappointing since his retirement. Bernie Kosar is more involved at this point.

You think Manning wants to be best buddies with Jeff Ireland?

For that matter, do you think anyone wants to be best buddies with Jeff Ireland?

P.S. Bernie Kosar is involved with the Browns, not the Dolphins even though he does a radio spot here in South Florida. As for Marino, he is a national commentator, and he could not have an official job with the team while being on CBS. Too much of a conflict of interest.

Heck Michael Irvin is more involved.

Keep Moore, get flynn at cheap cost (if no go get qb via draft) Sign Orton to cheap money for a backup, spend cap ol,dl,safety

Relationships are OVERated!

Out of all the considerations Mando speaks of above, "PERHAPS teamates" is listed as something of an after thought?

I know the owner, the Gm, the coaches are all important considerations. But if Manning's goal is to win another championship before thr bulb dims further, wouldn't you think teamates to be a priority consideration?

C'mon Mando!!!!

NE and Washington would have come back and offered that extra 2nd. Do you think the Rams weren't going to negotiate.

Ideally, they would have brought someone Manning was close to on board the staff back in early February. Plant the seeds, harvest the seeds.

Rumor has it the Dolphins have asked Manning to not officially eliminate them from consideration as it would hurt their chances to recruit Matt Flynn. Miami will go hard after Matt Flynn at 4:01pm.

I don't think he cares about relationship. The only relationship he had, Colts for 14 years, left him hanging the curb.

He is just shopping around to see who fits his style.

Dolphins will likely sign Dallas CB Terence Newman whom will be released because they love to sign Dallas' trash.

If the Dolphins don't get over Manning in the next 74 minutes, they'll lose out on Manning & Flynn. And that spells doom for Ireland & Ross.

It's not like Manning's a fresh faced kid out of college. He's not contemplating where to spend the next 10 years of his career.

Manning's thinking one more championship. Where is the best place to win NOW!

That means his emphasis is most definitely on TEAMATES!

As ALoco would say:

Relationships my azzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...............

Teammates yes. Slippery Hands Marshall no.

Well, guess we'll wait and see wont we?

Glad we aren't hiring people to get the "in's" with Peyton, that's just flat out desperate.

If we get him, great, if not, so be it. We were one of 4 teams out of almost the entire league that wanted to meet with him, so we took our shot.

Flynn is going to Cleveland or Seattle unless Miami offers his a RIDICULOUS contract averaging 13+ Million a year. Do you really want to pay Matt Flynn 13+ Million a year with 26 million likely guaranteed?

NO WAY.

Marino owes the Dolphin organization absolutely nothing. Never mind the fact that this isn't even the same organization....the Phins are 2 owners and 6 HC's removed from Dan Marino. It's a completely different company, just happens to have the same name.

How can anyone continue to advocate we get Flynn cheap? It ain't gonna happen! If Flynn passes on a more lucrative contract (which he is going to command) to come to MIA, then I would argue he's not smart enough to play QB. Plus, at the moment, we aren't 50 mil under the cap like some other teams. We still have other needs also.

This whole offense is Bush. If he goes down, its doesn't offer much.

Doom for Ireland sounds like hope for Phins fans when he gets fired for another collossal failure!

Hilarious....the number on Flynn gets bigger by the day/hour.....now we're up to $26M guaranteed? $26M guaranteed would suggest roughly $78M contract....I seriously doubt that.

On to plan c or d.

We don't have the offense or the relationships, so its a done deal. Time to look at FA. Bye Peyton.

No balls...is it your money stupido????why do you care what someone else spends??? Your the type of dude that counts another mans cash.

Jeff Ireland....have a seat!

This organization hasn't done some things well, but colossal failure is having 36 million removed from your cap by the league. Things have to be in perspective.

I think Mia is gonna miss on Manning Flynn and all the best QBs in the draft. Hope Matt Moore can carry the load.

Just because you have a billionaire owner, it doesn't mean you have all his billions to make deals. You still have a cap to deal with. Our cap position is hurting us in FA. This is something Ireland needs to work on for next year so we have a little more horsepower in FA in 2013.

Colossal failure is having you GM, HC, and DC suspended for a long period of time, along with the league taking away draft choices.

Why would we need to be $50M under the cap? You do realize that even if he commanded a $50M contract, that doesn't all go against the cap this year right?

He will likely command $15M or so guaranteed in a $50M contract. Most likely that will either be payed up front, or.....to get around the cap, will be pro-rated over the next couple of years or life of the contract.

You do realize that there are numerous ways these contracts can be structured right? This isn't baseball. $50M rarely means $50M in the NFL because of the numerous outs, incentives, option bonuses, etc.....never mind that these large contracts are most often restructured when they get on the back end which is where the big money is usually owed.

Stop worrying about the money....it's stupid....it's not even your money.

Cause Slam, it effects our ability to sign other players. It is called a SALARY CAP. Try reading about it.

How is our cap so high? The bears have way more cap room than us and have wayyyyy more talent than us. We only have 2 pro bowlers on our roster. Wake who is a borderline pro bowler is making slightly more than league minimum.

Cap space is about the mid point of the league 14/15 mill, they can still restructure and cut contracts.

For Manning, comfort is obviously very important (he'll leave the suitors at the mercy of his agent later on) but maybe we need more of a warrior and not someone so obsessed with being coddled.

Matt Moore is probably having a good laugh at Manning's neuroses!

Please dont sign FLynn!!!

Michael is jealous of others. Colossal failure is this team for well over a decade.

Slam - the Dolphins cap is about average in the league.

No balls, you dont think all the franchise qbs are getting paid you fool? their teams still sign players and better ones than us.Try reading about signing bonuses and upfront money to get around the cap. THis aint madden dykhead.

Agreed, our cap situation wouldn't matter if we only needed Matt Flynn to make us complete. I'm saying the people that are advocating we sign Wayne, Clark, Flynn, Saturday, and Williams (or any combination) are dreaming. You can't sign every FA on the market. That's all.

This is Ireland's time to shine. If he's worth anything more than a scout, he HAS to come through for Ross right now.

Teams stated #1 goal is getting an elite QB. Orders from the top! We lost RGIII. We're gonna lose on Manning & probably Flynn if we don't let go of the Manning concept soon.

You know Ireland won't reach for a QB at 8 so he's taking another lineman. Miami may very well go without bringing in any potential franchise QB's.

This would have to lead to Ireland's dismissal. If it don't, it's safe to say Ross is never gonna deliver a winner.

Denver and Horseface suck.

Just putting things in perspective When there is an over exaggeration.

Slam, our cap is not high, it is just high when you consider the lack of great talent on our team. The main reasons our cap is high is because Miami has been very conservative and not extended contracts yet on anyone of any significance. This has made Miami the LOWEST team in cash payouts in 2011. The good news is we have plenty of room to extend if we want. The bad news is there aren't too many players besides Jake Long who have a huge cap # that the Dolphins probably want to extend. The Phins would of course like to extend Cameron Wake, but right now he has a very low cap figure, so any extension would likely hurt the cap this year instead of helping it.

Slam - Our big cap hitters are Long, Marshall, Dansby, Solai, and Yeremiah Bell. They all command tons of $$$$$

I miss huizenga!!! Whenever he WANTED someone he got him: Parcellls, Saban, JJ. Whenever Ross WANTS someone its the kiss of death.

Slam! I'd rather be DEN in the hunt with50 mil to deal with than MIA desperate with 15 mil. Sorry, I don't see why that doesn't make reasonable sense.

No balls, you dont think all the franchise qbs are getting paid you fool? their teams still sign players and better ones than us.Try reading about signing bonuses and upfront money to get around the cap. THis aint madden dykhead.

You willing to risk 26 million guaranteed that Flynn, a former 7th rounder with a weak arm is a FRANCHISE QB?! Not me. I would rather take my chances with Tannehill at a lot less $$$ and give him time to develop. Thanks for calling me a "dykhead". You add a lot to the discussion by calling people names!

Colossal failure is Washington the last 10 years. And even though they got RG3, they screwed themselves with the caP fiasco. They couldn't get out of their own way.

Mikey boy! You're hopelessly confused! As it stands right now, for this lost franchise, collassal failure is:

ADMITTING TO THE WORLD YOU NEED AN ELITE QB & NOT GETTING ONE!

That would be a collassal failure.

SOlia is a free agent. Bell???the guy cant catch, tackle, cover or run. So what you are really telling me is we have 4 players only of which 2 are pro bowlers eating all of our cap room....SOunds like terrible management to me.

Wolfman is correct, as usual. The thought that Marino is in any way relevant to the current Miami Dolphins' quest for a QB can be described only as juvenile.

Where did you get weak arm. All scouting reports I read say his arm is good enough.

NO Balls...you are not risking 26 million...GET THIS THROUGH YOUR HEAD.....its not your money.

Lol how many teams have elite qb's

Other than their front 4 detroits defense sucks. Ryan grant grabbed a short pass ran thru the middle of the d 80 yards to the house and dude is far from a burner so guys need to quit man loving flynns performance. When he put points up on NE everyone was putting points up on them much like this year. And I think some here show more love to each other than their own spouses.Winston justice would make an excellant as he has the athleticism philbin is looking for in olinemen.

Sports writers grasping at straws for things to write about...

Someone wake me up when the season starts because all of this hoopla about absolutely nothing is making me tired...
